Football clubs team up for pioneering scheme Sheffield City Council launches a new campaign working with Sheffield Wednesday Football Club, Sheffield and Hallam Football Association and the Yorkshire Sport Foundation to encourage people with hidden disabilities to attend football matches. The Team Up! initiative will provide support to people with mental health problems and other hidden disabilities so that everyone, regardless of their needs gets a warm welcome

and positive response. Employees including stewards, ticket office staff and shop staff will receive awareness training. The initiative is the first of its kind and has been welcomed by the English Football League and Sports Grounds Safety Authority. The scheme is launched during South Yorkshire Safeguarding week, 9 – 16 July, and has been developed in consultation with parents, carers, children and young people and vulnerable

adults along with stewards and officials who regularly attend football matches. Jane Haywood, Chair of Sheffield’s Safeguarding Board, said: “Sheffield is the place where football started and where everyone counts. Through our safeguarding partnership we are working closely with the clubs, so that people with mental health and other types of additional needs are all equally recognised and responded to in the same way that we

have measures in place to safeguard spectators with physical disabilities. We are very proud of our local football clubs who are developing the initiative.” The Owls Safeguarding Officer, Matt Foster, added: “The Team UP! Initiative is a great way of supporting fans with hidden disabilities to attend football matches. The collaboration allows expertise to be shared amongst the group. At Sheffield Wednesday we are proud to support a

diverse fan base and are committed to improving access to all.” Councillor Jackie Drayton, Cabinet Member for Children, Young People and Families at Sheffield City Council, said: “During World Cup fever it’s fantastic to see this innovative project launch in Sheffield, the home of football. ‘The Team Up’ programme will enable all vulnerable children, young people and adults with hidden disabilities to enjoy the exciting experience of attending football matches and supporting their teams. Many thanks to all involved especially the wonderful staff and clubs in Sheffield.”

schools create smokefree parks Smokefree park signs created by local school children will soon be seen in outdoor play areas across Rotherham. The designs have been created in an effort to protect residents from the dangers of secondhand smoke and to help prevent youngsters from picking up a smoking habit. Pupils from Maltby, Canklow and West Melton schools were invited to enter into a poster design competition as part of Rotherham

Council’s Smokefree Parks initiative to raise awareness of the dangers of smoking and to encourage people to stop smoking tobacco and e-cigarettes in and arounds children’s play areas. The eight winning poster drawings, made into signs thanks to funding from local ward Councillors, will be installed over the school summer holidays. Councillor David Roche, said: “We want

children to grow up in safe, secure neighbourhoods where they will thrive and develop. I welcome these poster signs to help reduce both active smoking and its role modelling in front of children. And, by championing designs made by children, we are sending a strong message that we are serious about smoking cessation and prevention. We are all aware that smoking has been banned in public buildings since 2007 but people

can still smoke in outdoor spaces where children play such as parks. Not only can this result in children inhaling other people’s smoke, but it can also increase the chances of children copying the habit. We want our children to breathe smoke-free air in all areas but especially our parks where they can go to keep and get healthy.” Wards supporting the initiative include Sitwell, Wingfield, Valley, Holderness, Maltby, Rotherham West, Hoober,

Boston Castle, and Silverwood Ward. The competition winners from Crags Community School, Canklow Wood Primary School and West Melton Primary School, parents and teachers were invited to a celebration and awards event at Rotherham Town Hall, where the Mayor of Rotherham Cllr Buckley and Mayoress Mrs Buckley presented the children with a framed copy of their designs to keep. In addition to the

children the Town Hall event was attended by parents, teachers, local ward councillors and the Council teams behind the initiative; Public Health, Neighbourhoods, Parks and Greenspaces. 1. Nine Wards: Sitwell, Wingfield, Valley, Holderness, Maltby, Rotherham West, Hoober, Boston Castle, Silverwood have funded the ‘Smokefree Parks initiative’. 2. School competition winners that took part in

the Smokefree Initiative: Crags Community School – Brenn and Mckenzie’s designs were chosen by Maltby Councillors West Melton Primary School – Sinead’s design was chosen by Hoober Councillors. Canklow Woods Primary Schools – Charlotte, Gloria, Olivia, Mya and Ethan designs were chosen by Boston Castle Councillors. 3. During 201617 the number of quitters in Rotherham rose by 5% on the previous

year to 1,200, whilst nationally during the same period the number of quitters dropped by 20%. The number of quitters in the borough demonstrates that giving up the habit is achievable. 4. BE AWARE OF DEAFNESS DIFFICULTIES URGENT CALL FOR BLOOD DONORS 1 in 6 people are affected by hearing loss, and in the UK, more than 2 million people have hearing aids. It’s especially common as we age; 41% of over 50s have some form of hearing loss. Communication barriers as a result of deafness can be isolating for sufferers – lack of confidence, exclusion from society, depression and unemployment are all common challenges. However there are many opportunities for people to learn more about how to better support those with hearing loss. Be deaf aware There’s plenty you can do to support deaf people in your community and help them feel included at work and in social situations. Here’s some simple pointers to remember: • Get their attention – Make sure you have the attention of the person before you start speaking to them. Otherwise, they may not catch what you’re saying. • Choose the right setting – The best place for communication is one with good lighting and as little background noise as possible to

hear and understand conversation. • Use plain language – Plain language, normal lip movements and facial expressions make it easier for a person who’s deaf to understand you. Speak slowly and in a straightforward way. • Watch your volume – Shouting can be uncomfortable for hearing aid users. Speak at a regular volume instead. •Check they understand – Make sure you check the person understands what you’re saying. If not, try saying it again or in a different way. Never say ‘don’t worry about it’ or dismiss the conversation – this can make them feel excluded and isolated. • Try British Sign Language. In addition to speech and lipreading, many deaf people also rely on British Sign Language to communicate. It’s a combination of hand shapes and movements, facial expressions, shoulder movements and lip patterns. If you’re interested in learning, you can find great resources online through the charity British Sign.

RISING COSTS OF HOLIDAY CHILDCARE

A LETTER FROM SOOTY

Blood donations in Sheffield have dropped because of the hot weather and England’s fantastic run in the football world cup. On normal warm weather days, blood donations have often been around 5% to 10% down on what was forecast. And around the country, donations have significantly dropped on England’s match days, with a maximum drop of around 20% on Saturday as England beat Sweden. The combined effect has cost the NHS around 2,000 blood donations in the last two weeks. That has left an urgent need for people with the valuable O negative group to donate at Sheffield donor centre in the next few days. Stock levels are low and will fall below three days as the hot weather continues. NHS Blood and Transplant now urgently needs support to ensure hospital patients get the O negative blood they need. A-MAIZE-ING FAMILY FUN AT CAWTHORNE

Another giant puzzle of pathways has been created at Jowett House Farm. This year we have created the puzzle in the design of our “Little Grey Fergie” tractor. Over the winter this tractor has been restored to its former glory. “This little tractor was bought by my husband Jim’s Grandfather to haul coal up the welsh valleys to their nursery, to heat the greenhouses. I can’t tell you how old it is as that is one of the answers to a quiz question visitors have to find in the maze” said Sarah. We all had our first experience of driving on this tractor when we were teenagers. Five years ago It was sadly used to pull a trailer with Jim’s coffin on when he died after losing his battle with cancer. The restoration was something the family wanted to do in his memory. He would be thrilled to see looking so beautiful. We hope our regular visitors will also enjoy seeing the transformation as we will be taking tractor and trailer rides up to the farmyard most days. Jim always wanted the Maize Maze to continue. It is growing faster than I have ever known it grow this year with this hot weather. It is already mostly over 6 feet. A real brain teaser, the maze will test your powers of deduction and navigation to the limit. Tomorrow Cawthorne village school are coming to road test it and give it their seal of approval. Our team of Maze Masters will watch over you from the gallery bridges; there to help you solve the puzzle, if required. Enjoy the village fete atmosphere in the fun field; we have pedal go-karts, hoppers and bales alongside tradi-

tional and themed games/puzzles. Water for water pistols when it is hot. Let the children play the old fashioned way!! There is a “real charcoal BBQ” offering burgers made from our own beef along with hot and cold drinks. Take a trailer ride to the farmyard pulled by our newly refurbished “Little Grey Fergie” tractor. Finish your day with our own farmmade “Maizie Moo Real Dairy Ice-Cream.” A great place for a summer birthday party with a difference; suitable for all ages. You will take home, tired happy children, after a healthy day out in the countryside. Open daily, 10.30am -6pm from 21st July until the 3rd September, then weekends only (other than pre-booked groups) for the rest of September, 01226 791855. Torchlight Nights , Saturday 8th,15th,22rd and 29th September. Visit www.maizemaze.co.uk or facebook.com/ cawthornemaze for more information and special offers.

SEE ZIPPO’S 2018 ‘LEGACY’ CIRCUS FOR FREE IN SHEFFIELD

Zippos Circus is back on the road in 2018 with a nationwide Big Top tour – ‘LEGACY’ - celebrating the 250th anniversary of circus entertainment. Expect a spectacle like no other as extraordinary equestrians, astonishing acrobats, comical clowns and dashing daredevils join together in the ring to pay homage to Englishman and charismatic impresario Philip Astley, who invented the worldwide sensation that is circus in 1768. Mr Astley’s first-ever circus began in London and toured extensively from its early days. Audiences across the country can expect to see some of the amazing horse acts which thrilled the public in Georgian times, now performed by master equestrians The Khadikov Riders. Their astonishing repertoire will include the recreation of a rarely seen and daring equestrian act called ‘The Courier of Saint Petersburg’ which audiences have marvelled at for generations. The electrifying cast also introduces timeless comics - modern clown Totti with his wife Charlotte, herself a traditional White Face Clown from Belgium; and Brazilian Capoeira comic acrobat Paulo Dos Santos– a brilliant 3 foot 11 inches tall showman who starred most recently at Ringling Bros and Barnum & Bailey. Dos Santos won first place in Brazil’s National Capoeira Championships and his antics will incorporate elements of Capoeira (a Brazilian mixed martial art combining music, dance and acrobatics) into the show. Another sure fire hit of the show is daredevil Pablo who performs high in the Big Top with wife Vicky atop a dazzling Space Rocket; plus Cuban acrobats the Hermansito Troupe, showing off their Springboard and Russian Bar skills. Perhaps most daring of all will be Alex Michael, the fearless Brazilian aerialist who swings and walks upside down 30 feet above the audience with no safety nets or wires. The future of circus is not forgotten at Zippos Circus, in the form of The Garcia Brothers, the young sons of Pablo and Vicky who will finish the show with their extraordinary hand balancing skills. LEGACY will be presented by the world’s most famous Ringmaster Norman Barrett MBE, who will also welcome back his colourful fun-loving budgies, a perennial hit amongst children and adults alike. Zippos Circus is at Endcliffe Park, Ecclesall Rd, Sheffield S11 7AB from Thursday 9th to Tuesday 14th August. Discount tickets at www.zippos.co.uk or book by phone on 0871 210 2100.

clubland stars line up for jimmy tigers support alfie’s angels

Since the sad news of the savage assault on local legend Jimmy Carol, stars of local Clubland and beyond have been rallying round to offer thier support and services. With three top Appeal Shows already planned, the latest to offer their services include top local band Ribeye, featuring Russ Dennett and Andy Barker, who will be appearing at the first show to be held at Sheffield Lane on Wednesday 25th July, and X Factor Winner Sam Bailey, who will be making a special guest appearance at Rotherham Trades on Wednesday 1st

August. His son James said last week there had been a ‘significant development’ in his condition.Posting on Facebook, he said “I’m thrilled to announce that this afternoon my dad brought himself out of his coma and is now semi-conscious. He is opening his eyes, responding to small commands, is becoming aware of who is speaking (he seemed to know it was me) and can hear (if you raise your voice). Remember he is partially deaf. He moved his right leg to a 45 degree angle and he had a tear in his eye when he realised I was with

him and when I was telling him a story. Incredible.” He added: “He is no longer fully dependant on the life support machine and is now only partially supported by it. Over the next few days we will look to reduce this bit by bit. He is in a lot of pain and as the sedative has worn off he is becoming more aware of this, and so he remains in a critical condition as he is incredibly fragile right now. He still had an incredibly long, long way to go and we have been advised to expect slow progress but these past few days

he has been making amazing progress. My brother, Daniel, and I are ecstatic. He is and has been fighting and whilst we still won’t have a full picture of what lies ahead in the future, he is getting better and stronger each day. All of the prayers are working.” A reward of £20,000 is available for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the man who attacked Jimmy between 11.50pm on Tuesday, July 3 and 12.30am on Wednesday, July 4. SHEFFIELD Speedway will be supporting a great cause when they host the Plumco Top Gun Individual event on Thursday. The club will be staging a collection for ‘Alfie’s Angels’, a not-for profit organisation which aims to raise awareness of pregnancy and infancy loss. It’s a cause which is close to the heart of Tigers racer James Shanes as his sister went through the loss of her son Alfie at 34 weeks.

The project also provides a bereavement book for younger children who go through the loss of a family member. Shanes actually has Alfie’s ribbon logo on his race suit and fans are urged to give as generously as they can as they look to apply for registered charity status. Tigers co-promoter Julie Reading said: “We are pleased to support this cause on Thursday particularly as it is so close to one of our own riders.”

Meanwhile Newcastle star Danny Phillips will step into the line-up for the meeting which includes reduced admission for supporters. American ace Max Ruml, who is in his debut season of British racing with Edinburgh, has been confirmed in the field. He’s the second American with World Cup experience in the field as Scunthorpe man Gino Manzares is also included. Aussie prospect Zaine Kennedy has

also been added as he looks to impress British clubs with a view to launching his professional career in Britain. Sheffield copromoter Damien Bates said: “This promises to be a great night of racing and there’s a real cosmopolitan flavour. “Our own James Shanes will race and I’m predicting an exciting night for the fans.” Admission is just £13 adults, and children go free. Season tickets are valid.

Angler’s Corner

with Clint Walker

I hate zig fishing, and I bet I’m not the only one! It’s a technique I have little if any confidence in, knowing full well that rig mechanics dictate that the hook will not prick home until the weight of the lead comes to bear, which, with several feet of hook link out, doesn’t happen straight away! I know that many anglers swear by the rig, but equally I know that many like me tend to shy away from it because of lack of confidence, and little success. Having said that, conditions for my latest session screamed zig rigs, with dozens of carp cruising up the water, their dark backs indicating exactly where they were, and it certainly wasn’t on the bottom… The sun was high in the sky by 7am when I arrived, and it looked set to be another blisteringly hot day, with no prospect of bottom baits being effective. It’s a two rod day ticket water, and I have to mention how disappointed I was to recover almost 70 yards of thick monofilament line from the bushes as I approached my peg which had been left by another visitor. (I won’t say ‘angler’, but it was certainly disposed of by one!) I can’t believe that it still happens on any fishery, especially one that is as well looked after as this one obviously is. Pick it up; it’s your mess, not mine, and certainly not the fishery’s! Despite the annoying find, I settled into a corner peg, with a slight breeze pushing away from me, and plenty of fish showing. Tentatively, I fired out some mixers, hoping that the carp would show an interest and

allow me to fish floating crust or similar, but to no avail; they weren’t really interested, so zigs is had to be. I use Spotted Fin Turning Point hooks, a small size 10 wide gape is perfect, and add the Fox zig aligner system to ensure that the bait is tight to the hook shank. With two rods in use, I put yellow rig foam on one, and black on the other, with both steeped in liquid flavouring for ten minutes before casting… just to give a bit of extra attraction. The first bait was positioned to the left of the swim, under an overhanging tree where I’d noted carp patrolling, the second went out into open water, and I started to prepare a soupy mix for the Spomb. A sloppy groundbait was laced with a tiny amount of pellets, a splash of Smokey Jack fluid added, and it was left to fester for a few minutes. I’d recently read an article by South-West carper Matt Cuff, who really can make the method work, and was intending to chuck a Spomb out every ten minutes or so to keep a cloud of bits in the water over the foam hookbaits as advised by Matt; I couldn’t fail surely? Heavy bobbins were set on tight lines, and after about an hour, the rod tip of the right hand rod nodded a little as the alarm bleeped. I watched intently, hoping it would scream off, but no, it just quivered and then stopped. A few seconds later, it did the same again, so I lifted the rod to see if I could connect; nothing. The rig was recast, and a couple of minutes later, it happened once more, the same nodding tip, the same bleep of the alarm, but then silence… very perplexing, and very demoralising.... Both baits were anchored a few inches below the water, out of the eyeline of passing

waterfowl, so in perfect territory, but despite a couple of indications, I hadn’t hooked up. My confidence, as ever, was starting to ebb away again… I can only guess that it was caused by fish brushing the line as they passed through the swim, either way, they dutifully ignored my baits. I spent the day changing the depth of the foam offerings, changing the colour, swapping the hook sizes, and generally thrashing the swim to try and get a bite, but to no avail. The only redeeming aspect of my fishing was that no-one else had caught either, and as the sun started to sink lower, I thought a blank was on the cards, so had the all important ‘one last cast’. I honestly couldn’t think of anything else to try, my Spomb bucket was barren, so it would be down to luck and nothing more if I scored. An angler on the far bank packed up and drove home biteless, my last remaining compatriot started to pack down, but as I watched him load his car, I heard a bleep from the direction of the rod pod! I watched as the rod tip moved, then the line slowly started to stutter off the spool before stopping. I thought another fish was moving through, but then the tip moved again and stayed in position as the line was pulled away by a fish moving quickly. I lifted the rod to find solid resistance and waited for the lead to discharge (another thing I hate!) before putting pressure on the fish to bring it towards me. Within seconds, the fish was in the net, a lazy common of around 9lb,

and scant reward for a day spent constantly changing my set up to try and tease a take. They say the hard fought fish are best, but in this instance, it didn’t feel like a win, but at least it was a fish to save a blank. One thing it did do however was reinforce my disdain for zig rig fishing, I much prefer to sneak about with a good chunk of honest crust! Maybe one day, I’ll either ‘click’ with the method, or someone will show me something I’ve been missing, but in future, zig rigs are still a last resort! Pah!

blades legend honoured by naming of stand Sheffield United’s greatest-ever player is to have a stand at the Bramall Lane stadium named after him, it has been announced this week. The current 8,000 seater South Stand is to be renamed the Tony Currie Stand. The legendary Blades midfielder who played for England 17 times will be honoured ahead of United’s prestige home friendly against Italian giants Inter Milan on 24th July. An unveiling event will be held before kick-off when fans will see for the first time the signage which is sponsored by international coffee and tea brand, Cafès Novell, and TC will be invited onto the pitch “I am overwhelmed with this honour. This is a very special tribute,” said Tony who played 313 times for United between 1968 and 1976, scoring 54 goals. In 2014 he was named the club’s best ever player to mark United’s 125th anniversary. “Everyone knows what United and the fans mean to me- its an unbreakable bond that began 50 years ago and is as strong today as its ever been. The ground is also so close to my heart. It was the scene of so many moments that I cherish dearly. Its history is awesome - the events that have happened here that shaped football and sport in the world mean that having a stand named after me adds to the story and writes another page in the legend of the Lane. Incredible. I would never have dreamed all those years ago when I arrived as an 18-year-old from Watford that my name would one day adorn the front of a stand. I am so proud and want to thank the Blades family for adopting me as one of their own down the years. Things in my life have changed so much down the years, but Sheffield United has always been there.” Club historian John Garret said: “Fifty years associated with the Club is an incredible statistic. Tony is such a huge part of the Club

and its story and it showed the love and affection the fans hold for him when he was voted the greatest player to have pulled on the famous red, white and black during the 125th anniversary celebrations. He is humble and I know just how much this will mean to both him and his family. It’s a measure of his standing amongst his team mates that many of them will be joining him on the night to be a part of what will be a very special occasion. Also, it seems fitting the that stand that was rising over the famous cricket wicket as he scored that unforgettable goal against West Ham immortalised by the words of commentator John Motson will, carry his name in recognition for the memories he gave a generation of Blades. Victoria Garside, Operations Director with Cafès Novell, said: “We are delighted to be supporting this tribute and seeing Tony’s name up in lights. We are proud to work in partnership with the club to help expand and promote our brand and it is a privilege to have our name alongside the fan’s greatest ever player - Tony Currie. “

got the 60 and 30 minute split as we wanted.” Warne did admit that he is still looking to add to his squad before the big kick off on 4th August with a number of his current squad deputising in unfamiliar positions. “It does show that we are a few bodies short and we ended the game with Fordey at right back and Willo playing centre mid. That’s not a problem because the lads can play in a number of different positions but we are looking forward to bringing some new faces in. There are no new injury worries. As a workout for us, it was perfect. I think the lads have come through it well.” The tour allowed the Millers’ young professionals the opportunity to register some first team minutes in an attempt to catch the eye of manager Warne, who admitted he was impressed by the showings a number of performances. “I thought Wilesy especially when he came on was excellent. They’re all looking a little bit sharper and Smithy got a really good goal, a volley from the edge of the box early on in the game. Joshua Kayode nearly got one late on and the ‘keeper made a great save to deny Fordey from a free kick.”

owls squads in pre-season action A second half goal from Fernando Forestieri was enough to give Wednesday the win at League Two side Lincoln on Friday evening. The Owls livewire proved the difference as the whole of Jos Luhukay’s squad that made the trip to Sincil Bank gained valuable minutes in the searing Lincolnshire heat. In traditional summer style, the Owls changed their entire first half team for the second period to share the fitness tonic around. Before the break, play and chances were even as both sides went close with headed opportunities. Jordan Thorniley and Jack Lee sent efforts wide of the target after John Akinde spurned twin openings at the other end. Wednesday almost went ahead moments before the interval following a neat three-man move that saw Lucas Joao thwarted by some last-ditch defending. The friendly encounter needed a spark which duly came ten minutes after Forestieri entered proceedings – and ultimately settled the game. Cleverly taking a Liam Palmer feed under control, the Argentine then unleashed a fierce drive that whistled into the far corner to give the Owls the plaudits. Meanwhile the U23’s got their first serious run-out of the season with a visit to Hallam FC. Coach Neil Thompson was happy with the Under-23s’ maiden pre-season fixture on Tuesday evening. The Wednesday youngsters defeated Hallam FC 2-1 at Sandygate with goals from Sam Smart and Preslav Borukov. Neil said afterwards “It was our first game of pre-season, back playing on the big pitch and it was a good test for the boys. In parts we did OK, there were things that pleased us from the game and things that we need to work on. But at this stage, the main focus was for the boys to get the minutes under their belt and they all got at least 45 minutes, some even longer.

During the week young Owls players Connor Kirby and Fraser Preston visited Springvale Primary last week to meet the school’s sporting talent. Connor and Fraser attended the school’s sports awards to meet with youngsters and give out prizes to the winners. Lee McClure, headteacher of Springvale Primary, said: “It was an amazing evening! Thanks to the players for coming, they did well with a big crowd as young lads. The children appreciated it! We brought 40 of our kids to Hillsborough recently and lots are new Wednesdayites. Hopefully we have even more now!”

pre-season workout pleases warne Rotherham United boss Paul Warne was satisfied with the output from his side’s second and final friendly in Austria, which saw the Millers overcome local side SC Wiener Neustadt 1-0 on Saturday. Warne was pleased with the test posed by the hosts in Austria and with the output of his players, who were once again forced to overcome the pain barrier as preparations step up once more for the 2018/19 Sky Bet Championship campaign. “After a really tough week, we trained them hard Saturday morning as well so they weren’t exactly match fresh,” he said. “We wanted the lads to do it from a place of being a bit tired and a bit jaded because in the last 10 minutes of a game in the Championship that’s what they’re going to have to do. It was a really good performance and we limited them to no shots on goal, although we had corners and other set pieces to defend. We knew they’d be a good possessionbased team like a lot of the teams that we’ll play in the Championship this year and we worked on what we’ll do with and without the ball. The performances were really good. We got some more minutes into everybody and we

Rovers fans will get their first chance to quiz manager Grant McCann when he attends two supporters club AGMs this week. McCann will attend the Supporters Club AGM, held in the Belle Vue Bar at the Keepmoat Stadium, from 7.30pm on Tuesday July 17. He will then be present at the North Branch’s AGM, which takes place at the Carcroft Club in Carcroft, on Thursday July 19 from 7.30pm. Rovers chief executive Gavin Baldwin as well as other senior management from the club will also be present to answer questions from supporters. Meanwhile Rovers assistant Cliff Byrne feels new signings Ali Crawford and Mallik Wilks have quickly settled into the club. The pair got their first outings in Saturday’s 2-0 behind-closed-doors win over Leeds United’s U23 side at Cantley Park. Byrne said: “They’ve settled in well and made a really good impression, they’ve fitted in well with the group. They’ve shown plenty of the glimpses of the quality we know they’ve got, which is why we brought them into the club. They both did well and we’re confident they can go on to make a real mark for the club this season.” Goals from Alfie May and Andy Butler sealed the win over Leeds, with the first-team then playing a 30-minute match against Rovers’ U18s - who had played Barnsley’s youngsters earlier in the day - to ensure everyone got a full 60 minutes under their belts. Byrne added:

“The idea was to get 60 minutes into the lads, which we achieved in hot conditions, and the lads will reap the rewards for that in the coming week. It’s about building up to the players being ready for 90 minutes. We didn’t pick up any injuries, so we’re really pleased with the day. The fitness will always be the main focus during pre-season, but we can now spend more time fine-tuning the tactical side of things ahead of next Friday’s step-up against Birmingham City.” Rovers kick-off their Sky Bet League One campaign at Southend United on Saturday August 4, before their first home outing against Wycombe Wanderers the following Saturday.
