SHEFFIELD READY TO FULFIL IT’S BROADCASTING DREAMS DESPITE C4 NEWS City leaders say that Sheffield is ready to step up its film and broadcasting offer after receiving positive feedback to its bids to become a new home for Channel 4. Channel 4 execs have this week announced that Sheffield won’t be shortlisted for a creative hub after making the original 13-city shortlist. But the team that brought together the ‘If Channel 4 Were A City’ brochure say that confidence is sky high that it can deliver a
National Screen Institute which enables the city to fulfil its filmmaking aspirations. Councillor Mazher Iqbal, cabinet member for business and investment at Sheffield City Council, said: “We produced a brilliant bid for Channel 4 and we know that it has given the city a big boost to be considered as a new home for the broadcaster. “We are absolutely determined that this is just the start in fulfilling our ambitions to build a world-leading digital
and creative industry. We have so many pieces already in place from grass roots film-makers and digital journalists to established operators with a global reach like Warp Films. “We have two awardwinning universities turning out the filmmakers and journalists of the future as well as the UTC and Sheffield College who played such an important part in our bid.” John Mothersole, chief executive of SCC, said: “We are naturally

disappointed after pulling together such a strong bid which brought the city together. “The message is clear – we are a city that can shout about its many strengths and be a force to reckon with.
“The feedback from the broadcaster was clear – we excelled and our people excelled, and my thanks go to everyone who got us to this stage. Channel 4 has committed to work with Sheffield in the future.”

NEW CINEMA COMPLEX PLANNED FOR DONCASTER
Changes are afoot for Doncaster’s Civic and Cultural Quarter as plans are being finalised to start building a new cinema and five restaurant development. This month Doncaster Council’s cabinet have agreed to finalise plans, complete procurement of the contractor and begin construction on the high quality
development. The project, once complete will create more than 100 jobs and bring more than £530,000 of new business rates into the borough. The cinema and restaurant development was originally ear-marked to be delivered by the private sector company Muse Developments. However, the scheme halted under the private sector and
they were unable to complete the project. The council have now stepped in and are investing more than £10 million of their Investment and Modernisation Fund to bring the project to fruition. The council own the site and have development consent. They have been working with cinema operator, Savoy and have interest in the
development from local, national and international restaurant providers. The development is one of the final pieces of the jigsaw to redevelop the Cultural and Civic Quarter and fulfil the vision outlined in the Urban Centre Masterplan. The square has been transformed into a destination area in recent years, with the £20 million investment
or FREEPHONE 0800 046 1502
in the Civic Office, £22 million investment in the CAST performance venue, and the £14 million investment in the soon to be built Culture and Learning Centre. Cllr Bill Mordue, Cabinet Member for Business, Skill and Economic Development, said: “We are delighted that once again we have been able to bring a development project
to fruition, after it had stalled under the private sector. This shows that we are using innovative and creative ways to drive forwards Doncaster’s regeneration. “The cinema and restaurant development is something that all residents have been waiting for, for a long time and it is great that we are in a position to now deliver it. Once this development
is complete it will enhance the offer of the Civic and Cultural Quarter and bring even more visitors to Doncaster.” Mayor of the Sheffield City Region, Dan Jarvis said “Mayor Ros Jones and her Cabinet have set out an ambitious but deliverable masterplan to ensure that Doncaster town centre is a vibrant place where more
people live, work and visit. Not only will it revitalise our public spaces and help to sustain local shops, but it will also secure the town’s role as a key economic driver, creating jobs which are accessible to people across the borough and the wider region.”
It is planned for the new development to be open in late 2019.

ALBERT SNODGRASS Went to see the Doc yesterday about my deteriorating hearing. Doc: Can you describe the symptoms to me? Me: Yes, Homer is lazy and Marge has blue hair! A man walks into an emergency room with two black eyes and a broken nose. The doctor asks him what happened. “Well,” says the man, “I was having a nice round of golf with my wife. She sliced her ball into a pasture of cows. We went to look for it, and while I was rooting around, I noticed that one of the cows had something protruding from its rear end. Sure enough, when it lifted its tail, there was my wife’s golf ball.” “And?” asked the doctor. “Well,” the man said, “that’s when I lifted the cow’s tail, pointed, and yelled to the missus, ‘Hey, honey—this one here looks like yours!’” A woman turns to her husband in bed and asks, “Do you love me only because my father died and left me a fortune?” “That’s crazy. Of course not,” he says. “I’d love you no matter who left you the money.”

A little old lady answered her doorbell and saw a well-dressed young man carrying a vacuum cleaner. “Good morning,” said the young man. “If I could take a couple of minutes of your time, I would like to demonstrate the very latest in high-powered vacuum cleaners.” “Go away!” said the old lady. “I haven’t got any money!” As she closed the door, the young man quickly wedged his foot in the door and pushed it open. “Don’t be too hasty!” he said. “Not until you have at least seen my demonstration.” And with that, he emptied a bucket of horse manure onto her hallway carpet. “If this vacuum cleaner does not remove all traces of this horse manure from your carpet, ma’am, I will personally eat the remainder.” The old lady stepped back and said, “Well I hope you’ve got a damned good appetite, because they cut off my electricity this morning.”

HELP YOUR NEIGHBOURS - AGE UK’S TOP HEATWAVE TIPS With the on-going heatwave and exceptional high temperatures the country has experienced set to continue, Age UK is encouraging people to look out for their older neighbours and relatives. As the country’s largest charity supporting older people, Age UK is aware that older people can be vulnerable during the hot weather, particularly during prolonged spells. Caroline Abrahams, Age UK’s Charity Director said, “This heatwave seems set to continue, with experts predicting record highs over the coming days. Unfortunately this isn’t good news for everyone, with older people who already have health problems and/or who live in housing that is really hard to keep cool and well ventilated being especially at risk. That’s why we are urging older people to take care and look out for both themselves and others they know. It’s easy to under estimate the threat posed by hot weather, but the fact is our bodies are less able to cope with extremes of temperature as we get older, making us more susceptible to heat-related illness. Age UK is advising anyone with an older family member or neighbour to keep in friendly touch with them and check they are OK. It may be that offering to bring in some groceries, for example, so they don’t have to endure the heat outside would be very welcome over the next few days. As well as remaining indoors when it’s hottest, wearing light clothing and drinking plenty of fluids, it’s a good idea to continue to eat well, to ensure the body replaces the salt lost through sweat. Letting the cooler air in at night and shutting it out during the day, plus shading your home as much as you can are other top tips from the weather experts. Here are the Charity’s top tips staying cool and well in the warmer weather: 1. If you have neighbours or relatives who live alone, visit or phone to check that you
are not having difficulties during periods of extreme heat. It’s important to be aware of friends and neighbours during a heat wave and to let people know if you are on your own and have any concerns. Heat stroke is a life-threatening condition and can develop if heat exhaustion is left untreated. 2. Stay inside during the hottest time of the day – late morning to mid-afternoon. If you do go out use sunscreen of factor 15 or above, wear a hat and stay in the shade if possible. 3. When inside, try to keep your house cool. Keep curtains and blinds closed in rooms that catch the sun. 4. Avoid or limit strenuous activities like housework and gardening – try to do these activities when it’s cooler in the early morning or evening. 5. When travelling always carry a bottle of water and drink lots of fluid even if you aren’t thirsty. Limit drinks with caffeine and avoid alcohol as it can make dehydration worse. 6. Watch what you eat. Follow these tips to help you eat well during the warmer months: • Eat normally but try to have more cold foods, particularly salads and fruits as they contain a lot of water • Also be careful when eating outside. Whilst alfresco dining can be one of the best things about summer, hot weather causes bacteria to multiply quickly and increases our risk of food poisoning. Avoid this by bringing chilled food home quickly from the shops and putting it straight in the fridge when you get home, making sure you don’t have food sitting in the sun for long periods, and storing it in the fridge when you can • Be careful when barbequing. We all enjoy a barbeque in the sun, but it’s actually a riskier way to cook meat. Before eating meat such as chicken, pork, burgers, sausages and kebabs from a barbeque make sure it’s piping
hot and cooked all the way through, with no pink meat inside. There is no need to wash raw meat before cooking it and always wash your hands after touching it. 7. Choose the right clothes. It may sound obvious, but light-coloured, loose cotton clothing can help you stay cool in the heat. Dark colours absorb the light and can make you feel even warmer. 8. Think about your feet. Allowing your feet to breathe is important when the weather is hot so wearing open toe sandals is an excellent way to stop your feet getting sweaty and smelly. Avoid flip flops, which can be hard to walk in and opt for sandals which support your feet. Sandals that fasten with Velcro or adjustable straps are a good idea if your feet swell up in the heat. 9. Cool off with water. Remember to take cooler baths or showers. Try splashing your face with cool water or placing a damp cloth on the back of your neck. 10. Check for weather forecasts and temperature warnings on TV, radio and online at www.metoffice.gov.uk People looking for advice can call Age UK’s free Advice Line, 365 days a year from 8am - 7pm on 0800 169 6565, or visit www. ageuk.org.uk Age UK’s free guide, ‘Staying cool in a heatwave’, offers helpful advice on how to protect yourself from the heat, heat-related illnesses and what to do when someone shows signs of it. BLADDER & KIDNEY CANCER - THE WARNING SIGNS TO WATCH When was the last time you went for a wee and looked into the toilet pan before you flushed? The majority of us don’t pay any attention to the comings and goings of our bladder, but as it turns out, you may be sending very important health information down the toilet. Blood in pee is a key symptom of bladder and kidney cancer, yet only 16% of those most at risk – aged 50 or over – check the colour of their pee every time they go to the toilet. According to experts, blood might not appear every time, so it’s important that people seek medical help even if they notice it just once. Worryingly though, around half (47%) of those polled in new research by Public Health England said they wouldn’t see their GP if they saw blood in their pee just once, with 45% saying they would wait and see if it happened again – potentially delaying a vital diagnosis. The new findings are part of a new ‘Be Clear on Cancer’ campaign by PHE that’s encouraging people to be aware of the vital cancer signs. Every year around 22,000 new cases of bladder and kidney cancer are diagnosed in England; causing around 10,000 deaths. Should I be worried about finding blood? Yes and no. Seeing blood in your urine does not always mean you have bladder cancer. More often it is caused by other things like an infection, benign tumors, stones in the
kidney or bladder, or other benign kidney diseases. However, it’s important to have it checked by a doctor in the first instance, so the cause can be found, as 80% of bladder cancer patients have reported finding blood in their urine according to Cancer Research UK. What are the other signs of bladder and kidney cancer? Usually, the early stages of bladder cancer cause bleeding but little or no pain or other symptoms – which is why it’s important to see your GP if this sign appears. Bladder cancers that have grown large enough, or have spread to other parts of the body, can sometimes cause other symptoms, such as being unable to urinate, lower back pain on one side, loss of appetite and weight loss, feeling tired or weak, swelling in the feet and bone pain. Blood in the urine, which is also called ‘haematuria’, is the most common symptom of kidney cancer. About 50% of people diagnosed with kidney cancer have it when they first go to the doctor. The blood can make the urine turn a bright red colour, although on rare occasions, it can turn a dark brown. It can come and go and sometimes, it cannot be seen by the naked eye – but it can be picked up by a simple urine test at your GP surgery. As the cancer progresses, you may feel a lump or swelling in the area of your kidneys. If this occurs, you should go straight to your doctor. Some people
have other symptoms which can be vague, such as weight loss, a high temperature, a pain in your back on one side that won’t go away, tiredness, loss of appetite and a general feeling of poor health. However, it’s important not to panic, as these symptoms can be caused by many other conditions. Most people who have them will not have cancer, but it’s worth getting them checked out. If it is cancer, it will be easier to treat if it’s caught early. If you’re worried at all, always speak to your GP.

A-MAIZE-ING FAMILY FUN AT CAWTHORNE Another giant puzzle of pathways has been created at Jowett House Farm. This year we have created the puzzle in the design of our “Little Grey Fergie” tractor. Over the winter this tractor has been restored to its former glory. “This little tractor was bought by my husband Jim’s Grandfather to haul coal up the welsh valleys to their nursery, to heat the greenhouses. I can’t tell you how old it is as that is one of the answers to a quiz question visitors have to find in the maze” said Sarah. We all had our first experience of driving on this tractor when we were teenagers. Five years ago It was sadly used to pull a trailer with Jim’s coffin on when he died after losing his battle with cancer. The restoration was something the family wanted to do in his memory. He would be thrilled to see looking so beautiful. We hope our regular visitors will also enjoy seeing the transformation as we will be taking tractor and trailer rides up to the farmyard most days. Jim always wanted the Maize Maze to continue. It is growing faster than I have ever known it grow this year
with this hot weather. It is already mostly over 6 feet. A real brain teaser, the maze will test your powers of deduction and navigation to the limit. Our team of Maze Masters will watch over you from the gallery bridges; there to help you solve the puzzle, if required. Enjoy the village fete atmosphere in the fun field; we have pedal go-karts, hoppers and bales alongside traditional and themed games/puzzles. Water for water pistols when it is hot. Let the children play the old fashioned way!! There is a “real charcoal BBQ” offering burgers made from our own beef along with hot and cold drinks. Take a trailer ride to the farmyard pulled by our newly refurbished “Little Grey Fergie” tractor. Finish your day with our own farm-made “Maizie Moo Real Dairy Ice-Cream.” A great place for a summer birthday party with a difference; suitable for all ages. You will take home, tired happy children, after a healthy day out in the countryside. Open daily, 10.30am -6pm from 21st July until the 3rd September, then weekends only (other than pre-booked groups) for the rest of September, 01226 791855. Torchlight Nights , Saturday 8th,15th,22rd and 29th September. Visit www.maizemaze.co.uk or facebook.com/cawthornemaze for more information and special offers.

JOIN IN THE FUN AT THE SHEFFIELD CHILDREN’S FESTIVAL Roald Dahl’s Matilda is making mischief this year as one of the 40 thrilling activities taking place across the city. Children will also have the opportunity to explore the science of sweets, learn the moves to The Greatest Showman as well as go behind the scenes at South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue to learn about the life of a firefighter. Children can access the free activities by getting a Passport to Learning from their local library for £3.50. The festival began at a launch event on 21st July at the Moor Market, where taster activities, special offers, quiz trails and a few surprises were available for everyone. The fun continues throughout the summer and wraps up on the 11th of August. All activities are commissioned by Sheffield’s Children’s University, which is part of a national initiative that encourages and celebrates participation in a wide range of learning opportunities outside normal school hours. It tracks and rewards Sheffield children who take part in voluntary learning activities including breakfast and after-school clubs, and activities in the evenings, at weekends and in holidays. Every hour spent at an event earns you a credit which you can collect to receive Sheffield CU award certificates and badges. To discover the full list of free, exciting activities on offer this summer visit www. sheffield.gov.uk/cu, email CU@sheffield.gov.uk or call 0114 2813761.

TRAMLINES FESTIVAL AND SHEFFIELD CITY COUNCIL ANNOUNCE PERMANENT MEMORIAL TO SARAH NULTY, THE FORMER FESTIVAL DIRECTOR Following the tragic passing of Festival Director, Sarah Nulty who died just weeks before the tenth edition of Tramlines, plans have now been confirmed for a permanent memorial to Sarah on Devonshire Green, the original main stage of the festival. A commemorative plaque will be embedded into the wall at the top of Devonshire Green, facing down towards the traditional site of the main stage. She will also be awarded with a Civic Award from the Lord Mayor of Sheffield, Magid Magid. Devonshire Green was the original Tramlines site back when it all first began in 2009. Festival organisers and
council representatives have decided that this is the most fitting place for a memorial to Sarah. In addition to the memorial plaque, The Lord Mayor of Sheffield, Councillor Magid Magid will be giving Sarah a posthumous Civic Award. Councillor Magid said: “This is a very special honour. We use civic awards to recognise Sheffield heroes who do such valuable work in the city. Sarah was an incredible person who had a hugely positive impact on the city. She is the perfect candidate to receive this award.” Timm Cleasby, a founder of the festival and the head of operations, said: “It’s very important that
there is a permanent tribute to Sarah in recognition of everything she put into the city. She was a massive fan and supporter of Sheffield’s creativity and independence. The positioning of the plaque at Devonshire Green is a poignant and fitting tribute. Sarah’s vibrancy and energy made her seem larger than life and it’s brilliant that she will be remembered for years to come. Hopefully her work will serve to inspire others in the future.” Richard Eyre – Sheffield City Council’s Head of Major Events, said: “It was great to see Sarah come on board with the festival when it was first conceived and develop into the

role of Director. I was personally inspired by her passion and her vision. She had a fantastic calming influence on everyone and never seemed flustered by the issues that arose in the running of a festival. It’s totally fitting that the city pay tribute to Sarah’s work in the local music industry and I look forward to seeing the memorial in place at Devonshire Green.” The 10th edition of Tramlines has been a huge success with up to 30,000 people attending over the weekend. The new site at Hillsborough Park has proved to be the perfect location for Sheffield’s much-loved festival. Bands, organisers and attendees have been

showing their support for Sarah by wearing ‘BeMoreNulty’ t-shirts. Acts including, Reverend and the Makers, Milburn, Universal Tree, Bang Bang Romeo, Everly Pregnant Brothers and many more all paid tribute to Sarah during their performances. Sunday headliner, Craig David, spoke about Sarah during his show and encouraged the audience to sing along with one of his tracks in her honour. He later posted the following tweet. ‘Thank you everyone @tramlines festival today you were absolutely amazing! Thank you Sarah Nulty for creating such an amazing festival & may you rest in peace knowing that you’ve brought so many
people together and your legacy will live on. ’ There was also a memorial video presented by Timm Cleasby and shown on big screens from the main stage on Sunday
evening with the audience of thousands joining in with a minute’s applause for Sarah. The ‘BeMoreNulty’ t-shirts are on sale via the Drop Dead website with all profits donated
to Weston Park Cancer Charity and Cavendish Cancer Care. All guestlist charity donations and profits from the backstage ‘Nulty’s’ bar also went to these causes.

ANGLER’S CORNER
sixty yards, so I attached a pre-tied mono hook link, with a size 16 hook on the end, nicked on three maggots, and fired with Clint Walker it back out to the mark. After hitting the I’m a bit fed up with carp fishing, clip, I swept the rod to the side to count and was starting to miss staring at the feeder down. As I watched the tip take a quivertip, so decided to travel to a up the slack, I noted a bite as the feeder local reservoir of 40-odd acres, Stanley sank into about six feet of water and Pool. It’s on the Stoke-on-Trent Angling struck immediately to hook a small roach Society card, a great value ticket at just of 6oz. The next cast saw the same result, £65 for the year (days only, other options with fish hitting the feeder on the drop, available) which offers something for so I loaded more maggots on to the hook, all across rivers, small ponds and bigger six in total, in the hope that there would lakes, with fish to around 40lb to target. be a bream sized mouthful when it finally I fancied a day of bream fishing, and came to rest! although weather conditions weren’t that It worked. Despite feeling a pluck at the favourable, with a blisteringly hot day bait as it slowly sank on a three foot hook forecast, I set off with a pint of maggots, length, it wasn’t until five minutes later and a bucket of groundbait to see if I that the tip flickered, then slowly pulled could catch a slab or two! right around as a bream sucked the bait I’d noted the match report from the in; a classic bream bite! A chunky fish preceding weekend which caught my eye, of around 4lb came to the net, the new with over 67lb required to win, the bulk rod coping easily, and it was quickly made up of bream to about 5lb. If I could unhooked and returned immediately. I’m catch a similar weight, then I would be loathe to use a keepnet unless absolutely very happy, so parked up, unloaded the necessary to take a particular photograph, kit, and marched around to the far side of and certainly wasn’t going to confine the lake which, after over a month of sun, such quality fish in the shallows in direct was somewhat lower than normal. With sunlight. I’d much rather they found the water so low, it gave easy access to the oxygen and shelter in deeper water, and if bankside, so I set up on the sandy bank, it meant catching less, then so be it. and quickly put out ten feeder loads of As I stared at the quivertip, I noted shoals bait to try and get fish in the area. of tiny fry swimming right in the edges of I’d tackled up the new Sonik Sports SKSC the crystal clear margins. Watching them 11’ feeder rod, intending to try it for flit about, I became aware of hordes of something other than the carp I’d caught perch patrolling just beyond them, like the last week, and to see how it coped with school bully and his gang waiting for the bigger loads at longer range with a bit geeks outside the school gate. Every time of a crosswind. Ten feeders were easily the fry slipped away from the safety of the dropped on my clipped up spot at about edge, the perch charged in and scattered

them up the bank in an explosion of silver skitterings! It was like watching mirrors breaking at the water’s edge, as time and again, the stripey killers chomped amongst the fry, and it made fascinating watching! As an additional bonus, each time I missed a bite at range, and had to retrieve the rig, by stopping just off the bank and allowing the bait to waft through the water, it was engulfed by one of the school bullies, so I was guaranteed a bite every cast! At that rate, it didn’t take long to start to build a healthy total. In addition to roach and rudd, I was picking up bream perhaps every other cast, and they were all solid fish between 3-4lb. It wasn’t just about the fishing though. I was the only angler present on over forty acres, and delighted in watching kingfishers zip across the surface in pairs, grebe hunting in the same area as me, and buzzards circling high over the fields in a cloudless sky, and as the day progressed, any worries or stress I had simply drifted away; I can’t remember the last time I had such a relaxing day on the bank! I’d mixed a bowl full of Spotted Fin Sweet Super Blend, and added a handful of their Boosted Pellets to add weight and consistency to ensure it hit the bottom rather than explode out of the feeder on the way down. After seven hours, it was running out, but by then, I’d had well over

100lb of fish, including at least twenty chunky bream, some smashing perch and roach, and odd rudd, so decided to call it a day and return home. I’d gone through perhaps two kilos of groundbait, a couple of ounces of pellets, and half a pint of maggots, so to take such a quality net of fish was pleasing indeed. Was it a fluke? I’m not sure, the only to find out will be to give it another go next week… but I do know it’s fishing very well at the moment so who knows? Maybe you should check out the club website to grab a ticket and have a go yourself? Tight lines…

EGAN SIGNS ON FOR THE BLADES IN RECORD DEAL United have paid an undisclosed, clubrecord fee for a 25-year-old defender with proven leadership qualities and Championship experience. Brentford captain John Egan has penned a four-year-deal at Bramall Lane, to become Chris Wilder’s second quality summer addition, after the arrival of Manchester United stopper Dean Henderson. Twicecapped Republic of Ireland international Egan has made 67 appearances for the Bees during the last two seasons and is regarded as one of the most consistent defenders in the Championship. Egan, who began his career at Sunderland, is no stranger to Bramall Lane, having played once for the Blades during a short loan spell in the second half of the 2011/12 campaign under Danny Wilson. Prior to his time at Griffin Park, the central defender amassed nearly 100 appearances as he impressed at Gillingham. Boss Chris Wilder is delighted the

Rovers manager Grant McCann feels his side have improved in every pre-season outing so far. McCann took plenty of positives from Friday’s display against Sky Bet Championship side Birmingham City. “Some of the movement, the passing out and the link play is getting better, we’re making great strides with that from the first two games, - it’s starting to come together, but it will take a little bit of time,” he said. “They all impressed, every single one of them gave everything, I said to them before the game to not leave anything on the pitch, just to get as much out of it as possible and run yourself into the ground because they’ll feel the benefits in the next game they play.” Rovers’ fourth pre-season outing now comes away at Grimsby Town on Tuesday night, with a different XI likely to play 90 minutes at Blundell Park. McCann says everyone is working hard to be ready ahead of the season’s opener away at Southend United on Saturday August 4. “I’ve seen a real change in intensity in the way they have been training and in the way that we play, there’s a change in their pressing and their attitude and how they’re getting to know that shape and the system, and that’s starting to show,” he added. “There has been a tremendous attitude in the sessions we have put on for them, they’ve all delivered and I’ve been really pleased with the outcome, the ones that didn’t play here trained just as hard. “It’s a new formation and a new way of playing under a new manager for them, it’ll take a little bit of time to get used to everything, but I can see everyone coming round to it now with just over two weeks until we go at Southend.” Rovers kick-off their Sky Bet League One campaign at Southend United on Saturday August 4, before their first home outing against Wycombe Wanderers the following Saturday.
OWLS U23s PROGRESSING NICELY
SKY TO SHOW OWLS V LEEDS AND WBA
The Owls Under-23s continued their preparations for the 2018/19 season with a 2-1 victory away at Leicester City this lunchtime. Neil Thompson believes the level of performance from his side shows just how far the Owls have progressed in the past three years. Goals from Connor Kirby and Alex Hunt saw the Owls come from behind to make it back to back pre-season wins. On the clash with the Foxes, which has become a regular fixture for Wednesday in recent pre-seasons, Thompson said: “I thought it was a really good performance against a tough side. “We have been going there for the past two or three seasons now and they have always been a really tough opposition but the boys were smashing today. “We looked a threat on the counter, passed the ball well and collectively I’m really pleased with them. “That was our second game of the summer, two very different games against Hallam and Leicester, two totally different tests and they have come through the games really positively.”
The Owls’ Championship home fixtures against Leeds and West Brom have been selected for live TV coverage by Sky Sports. The Leeds clash scheduled for Saturday 29 September will now be played on Friday 28 September, with kick-off at 7.45pm. Meanwhile, the S6 clash with West Brom is unchanged in terms of date and kick-off time – Wednesday 3 October (7.45pm) – but will be broadcast live by Sky.

TEAM ETHOS IMPRESSES NEW SIGNING The team environment at Rotherham United was the key reason for joining the Millers, according to new singing Billy Jones. The former West Brom and Sunderland defender pens a two-year deal with Millers, and becomes Paul Warne’s fourth close season arrival. “It was what the manager said about having a great dressing room that really made my mind up,” Jones told www.themillers.co.uk “The way the manager said he works, everything about the way he manages, it was really appealing. To be part of something good is fantastic for me. It has been a tough last couple of seasons at Sunderland, so it is great to have a fresh start here.” Jones has been looking for a new club after departing Sunderland, where he starred for the Black Cats in the Premier League, whilst the 31-year-old has also represented West Bromwich Albion in the top flight. The Shrewsbury-born ace boasts a wealth of experience in England’s top two divisions which started back in 2003 when he broke into Crewe’s first-team as a youngster. Jones’ CV attracted attention from a number of clubs but the England youth international says the call from Warne just over a week ago helped steer his decision to move to South Yorkshire. “I spoke to the club a week or so ago now, and obviously being out of contract my agent has been working hard behind the scenes on a number of different options,” Jones added. “I came along to meet the gaffer here and I was really excited about joining after what he told me about how he wants his teams to play, the team ethos, and the team spirit he already has with the lads. I am really looking forward to being part of that. I know when I have had success previously in The Championship and other leagues, it has been down to that. I am really looking forward to it. “From the way the club has been sold to me, and the style of management, coupled with the coaches the managers he has, the whole mentality of the team is something that I really buy into.”

Cork-born man sees his long-term future at Bramall Lane and believes the Blades have got a great deal. The gaffer remarked: “John has been our number one target in that position throughout the summer, it has been going on a while and we’ve kept it close to our chests because we’ve had to. I’ve monitored him for a number of seasons now and he is a defender who defends properly and he’s been excellent as skipper for Brentford. We see him as a leader and he is worthy of the fee we’ve paid for him, in my opinion he is a better player than a couple of those who have already moved for bigger fees this summer. His Championship experience will be crucial as is his experience of being at the right end of the division. He’s a great age, will develop with us and when that happens I have every confidence that he will be a regular international with the Republic of Ireland.”
