A MINING STATUE FOR DONCASTER If you’re a former miner or a relative of a former miner, would you be interested in being part of an iconic piece of art to celebrate Doncaster’s proud mining history? Doncaster Council has commissioned an internationally acclaimed artist, Laurence Edwards, to produce a thought provoking statue, one that will capture the voices of miners, colliery staff and their families for generations to come.

The proposed art piece will be located in the Waterdale area in the town centre for everyone to enjoy. Visit www.facebook. com/miningstatue/ to get a glimpse of the designs for the sculpture. To help shape his designs, Laurence has met with local people from across the borough. The meetings have had extra signiﬁcance as Laurence has sculpted the portraits of people from mining communities in wax

while they have told their stories. These will be cast in bronze and be a part of the ﬁgurative, bronze mining statue. Twelve more miners are still needed to help piece together the sculpture. Mayor Ros Jones said: “As a daughter of a Doncaster miner, I am incredibly passionate and proud of our mining

heritage. This is about our legacy – we want to celebrate our mining history by creating a ﬂagship piece of art which recognises all of our mining communities located in the centre of Doncaster. “The iconic piece of art will commemorate our past but also look forward to the future capturing the hearts and imaginations of generations to come.” Help raise money to make the statue happen

TRANSPORT STRATEGY IS A BLUEPRINT FOR SHEFFIELD IN 2035 A blueprint for Sheffield’s transport network and how it can meet the challenges of a changing, diverse and creative city has been launched. Sheffield’s Transport Strategy sets out a vision for the next 20 years to deal with the impacts of the arrival of HS2, the creation of thousands of new jobs in the city centre and delivery of new homes that people need, as detailed in the soonto-be-launched local plan consultation. The Strategy spells out how Sheffield is a city undergoing significant change and growth. Not only is the population

growing and living longer, but more people are expected to stay in Sheffield and in particular, live in the city centre. Transport has a key role to play in addressing future challenges whilst delivering benefits which can be shared by all. Transport connects people to opportunities and services and helps people do business It contributes significantly to the wider sustainability agenda whether it is improving air quality or reducing the city’s carbon footprint, in line with the council’s recently-published clean air strategy. The new approach sets out

how it is planned to make Shefﬁeld easier to get around, better connected and for people to be able to travel safely and in sustainable ways. Councillor Jack Scott, cabinet member for transport and development at SCC, said: “We can make Shefﬁeld a place where everyone can access opportunities without mobility constraints and with minimum delay. “Together, we can reduce the negative impacts of transport, improve safety and enhance quality of life. There will be some disruption and improvements might take decades. But these ambitious transport

interventions are necessary to help Sheffield reach its true potential. “The stark truth is that given the challenges we face, we can no longer simply carry on in the old way. The overwhelming majority of trips are made by private motor car, resulting in far too much pollution and congestion. “We must move away from a “car first” approach and give the necessary priority to the most “space efficient” ways of travelling. We need to make it as affordable, safe, convenient and as natural as possible for people to make the right travel choices for themselves, their community and their

city. This means public transport that works for everyone and safe walking and cycling for shorter trips. “This is how we propose to free up the space on our highways for trips that are critical for our economy. “Getting this right for Shefﬁeld and building the great transport system our city deserves is a huge prize.” The Strategy builds on the Transport Vision which saw nearly 2,000 people respond when it went to consultation earlier this year. Further engagement is planned should the Strategy be adopted by Cabinet. More work will then be undertaken to determine the multimillion pound schemes which will help deliver this new era for transport in the city.

Grease will definitely be the word on everyone’s lips this summer in Sheffield with the news that Motorpoint is to host a special drive in screening of the iconic movie this September. The UK’s largest independent car retailer, which opened its branch on Europa Link in Sheffield in April 2017, will once again be the venue for a one-off themed Drive In Cinema – in aid of Cash for Kids - this year on Saturday, September 8. Motorpoint is aiming to build on the success of last year’s sell-out screening of ‘Dirty Dancing’ by working with Sheffield-based Urban Entertainment to put on a special showing of ‘Grease’ - starring John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John – which this year celebrates its 40th anniversary - in the grounds of the seven acre branch, minutes from both J33 and J34 of the M1. Gates for the event will open at 6pm and guests will be able to start rocking and rolling from the comfort of their very own car from 8pm onwards. Entry is £20 per car. Food and Drink will be provided by Sheffieldbased Bear’s Street Food while a special movie themed soundtrack will be broadcast exclusively prior to the movie. And, as part of the drive in experience, Motorpoint will be offering visitors the chance to receive a partexchange valuation on their car while they wait for the movie to start. All profits from the evening will go to Cash for Kids, the Sheffield-based children’s charity, which works tirelessly to support children under the age of 18 who are sick, disadvantaged or in need of extra support.

Green spaces across Sheffield and in the city centre are among a record-breaking 1,883 UK parks and green spaces that will today receive a prestigious Green Flag Award – the mark of a quality park or green space. This international award, now into its third decade, is a sign to the public that the space is accessible, boasts the highest possible environmental standards, is beautifully maintained and has excellent visitor facilities. Firth Heritage Park, Norfolk Heritage Park, Cholera Monument Grounds and Clay Wood, Devonshire Green, Peace Gardens, Sheffield Winter Gardens, Sheffield Botanical Gardens, Weston Park, Meersbrook Park, Millhouses Park, Ecclesall Woods, Wheata Woods and Tinsley Green have all retained their quality status and will proudly fly the Green Flag as a symbol of the excellent standards maintained within the parks. As well as attracting those who enjoy outdoor leisure activities, Sheffield’s parks play host to many popular events and festivals, raising the city’s profile nationally and internationally. SHOULD YOU SLEEP WITH A FAN ON - WHAT THE EXPERTS SAY One of the very worst things about this year’s long, hot summer is trying to get to sleep when your bedroom feels like the Sahara Desert. Even if you open the window, sleep on top of the sheets and forgo the pyjamas, it’s often so hot that within minutes you’re drenched in sweat and wondering if you’re going to get any shut-eye before work. Unsurprisingly then, the heatwave has boosted the sales of electronic fans. But some health experts argue that these gadgets can do more harm than good.“Sometimes, sleeping with a fan on in the bedroom can encourage dryness in the skin, throat and eyes, as well as circulate dust and pollen, causing allergies,” says Dr Ebrahim, Director of The London Sleep Centre. Asthma UK says that the droppings of house dust mites are one of the most common allergy triggers in the UK. Given that dust can cling to pretty much any surface, it’s easy to see how fans that circulate air can make asthma symptoms much worse However, provided you are well hydrated (around two litres of water spread across the day) and keep your home free from allergens by regularly dusting and hoovering, this should not signiﬁcantly impact your sleep or long term health,” says Dr Ebrahim. “Carefully dismantling the fan and wiping the blades to remove dust build up habitually will also help, and if you’re really suffering from allergies

whilst you sleep, you may want to explore hypoallergenic bedding, too. Asthmatics and those that suffer from hayfever may find it harder to sleep in the summer anyway, so should be cautious when sleeping with the window open or a fan on.” Electric fans can also have a negative effect on your eye health. “Most people overlook their eye health, thinking their eyelids will take care of them,” says Anne Malambo, of Feel Good Contacts. “Sadly, this isn’t the case; eyelids can be partially open when we sleep without us knowing, meaning our eyes are exposed. When you couple this with the dry air the fans circulate, it can cause our eyes to dry out. This creates red, irritated and sometimes puffy eyes, because of the unrest caused by the gusts of wind being periodically blown into them.” Dr Ebrahim says that there are a few benefits to sleeping with a fan on. “They promote circulation of air through the bedroom, which is particularly beneficial in hot weather when people find the warmth uncomfortable and not conducive to good sleep. Most fans also provide gentle white noise, which is a type of sound signal that is calming but also drowns out background noise. Many people find white noise soothing and more comfortable than sleeping in silence.” So would experts advise that people sleep with an electric fan overnight?

“Sleeping with an electric fan on is personal preference – some ﬁnd it more comfortable than sleeping in stagnant heat, and whilst fans only circulate air the breeze can be cooling especially when coupled with a slightly open window,” says Dr Ebrahim. Core body temperature needs to drop in order to promote sleep, so fans can be especially helpful during a heatwave – particularly in the UK where home air conditioners are not standard. “As long as the noise is not disruptive, you are well hydrated, and those with allergies are taking appropriate steps to minimise the effect of dust or pollen allergens, fans can be a beneﬁcial asset to sleep hygiene. Air conditioning units, whilst providing cold air and regulating the room temperature, are generally more irritating to the eyes, nose and throat as whilst cooling, as they also draw out moisture from the room.” “If you must keep the fan on, which is understandable in a heatwave, then using eye masks and moistening eye drops before bed can really help with eye issues,” adds Malambo. “You should especially take care with this if you are female aged 30-50 as you are more prone to dry eye conditions due to natural hormonal shifts in the body. If you’re taking care of your skin in the heat, be sure to place the same attention to your eyes and you’ll wake up in a much better mood because of it.”

An increasing demand for skilled healthcare professionals has led to a shortage of allied healthcare workers, especially phlebotomists - the skilled healthcare professionals who take your blood. Demand is at an all-time high with hospitals, clinics and GP Surgeries offering a golden opportunity for that “longed for” career change! If you have good people skills and manual dexterity, and like the idea of working in a busy healthcare environment, a phlebotomist job may be just the job for you! Many people enter this profession when they are looking for a career change or a fresh start and they often have no previous qualifications or experience in healthcare. Phlebotomists can work part time (usually mornings) but also may choose to work full time as well as weekends, holidays and bank work. Blood samples are usually collected before mid-day and then analysed in your local hospital’s Path Lab in the afternoon. “We train people from all walks of life and all ages” explains Lauren, Geopace office manager. “We’ve had school leavers, shop assistants, receptionists, beauticians and dental nurses, as well as telesales staff, unemployed and the retired who are looking for a challenge. We also have referrals from JobCentres, who can sometimes fund your course in full” says Lauren. Once you are on the healthcare career ladder there are often opportunities to progress into other areas, such as working in the hospital path lab or other departments. Promotion is much easier once you are “on the ladder” and have some experience behind you. Many Geopace students are now working as phlebotomists throughout the UK and a few have even chosen to work abroad where there is often a similar shortage and growing demand for this specialised skill. An interesting booklet featuring student’s “Success Stories” is written by the student’s themselves and looks at how they have made the move from wide and varied backgrounds to find themselves now working as phlebotomists. Stade and Bethany Black. Tramlines 2018 attracted more families than ever. It saw them attend the improved Into The Trees area complete with ﬁlm screenings of family and cult classics, party DJs, and arts and crafts workshops, giving a ﬁrst-time festival experience to kids of all ages. Festival organisers were hit with a tram strike over the weekend, but due to last-minute, meticulous contingency planning, replacement buses were laid on to ensure festival goers could leave site safely and without fuss. Elsewhere across the festival no major incidents have been reported. The presence of the

Tramlines Festival Director, Sarah Nulty, who passed away just three weeks before event, was felt across the weekend. Bands, organisers and attendees honoured Sarah’s passing at the event, wearing ‘BeMoreNulty’ t-shirts. Acts including, Reverend and the Makers, Milburn, Universal Tree, Bang

Bang Romeo, Everly Pregnant Brothers and many more all paid tribute during their performances. Sunday headliner, Craig David, spoke about Sarah during his set and encouraged the audience to sing along in her memory, which he later tweeted, plus huge crowds gathered to watch a special video tribute before

Craig took to the stage. The move to Hillsborough Park was undoubtedly a big achievement for Tramlines and a step up the ladder as one of the UK’s best-loved festivals.
