SHEFFIELD BY THE ‘SMOKEFREE’ SEASIDE Sheffield’s commitment to becoming smokefree made waves this week as the city centre’s annual summer seaside became the first public family event to go smoke and vape free. Following proposals from Sheffield City Council to Sheffield by the Seaside, the event has officially adopted a voluntary Smokefree policy. Posters and signage have been installed around the Peace Gardens, where the event is taking place until 28 August, asking those visiting the area not to smoke or vape. Councillor Mary Lea, Cabinet Member for Culture, Parks and Leisure at Sheffield City Council, said: “Sheffield by the Seaside

attracts hundreds of families and children throughout the summer holidays so this is a huge step towards our ambition to make family focused events smokefree. “Smoking in familyfriendly places creates the impression that it is harmless but the reality is that tobacco kills more than 900 people a year in Sheffield and around five children start smoking in Sheffield every day. To achieve our goal of a smokefree generation by 2025 it is vital that we protect children and young people from exposure to smoking. “We have the opportunity to make a real difference and will continue to develop ways to incorporate voluntary

smokefree policies in to other family focused open spaces and events. Following public consultation a voluntary smokefree policy was introduced across all public playgrounds in Sheffield in 2016, to change social norms around smoking, reduce visibility of smoking and protect children from the harmful effects of second hand smoke. In February this year Smokefree Sheffield was officially launched with the aim of achieving a smokefree generation in Sheffield by 2025. Current smokefree legislation only covers enclosed spaces but not outdoor public spaces. The council has been looking at ways to extend

the voluntary smokefree policy to other public outdoor spaces and areas used by children and families. Sheffield by the Seaside is the first event to adopt the voluntary smokefree policy but the council is working with partners to include further smokefree areas at the many other public events held in the city, such as smokefree family stages at festivals. Greg Fell, Director of Public Health at Sheffield City Council, said: “Evidence shows us that children are less likely to start smoking if they do not view it as a normal part of everyday life. Making smoking less visible and less socially acceptable reduces the number of children who

take up smoking and this is our primary aim here. “Local surveys have shown that there is strong public support for increasing the number of outdoor smokefree environments in Sheffield and we we’re working with other partners on the best ways to introduce more of these across the city.” Smoking remains the biggest killer in the UK, with tobacco killing 16 people per week in Sheffield alone. On average around 1 in 5 adults in Sheffield smoke.

SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE! AT ROTHERHAM SHOW

A combination of new attractions and old favourites will be on offer at this year’s Rotherham Show – still the biggest free-to-enter show in the North of England! Taking place on the weekend of September 8 and 9, the Show promises to be jam-packed with fun for all the family! New for this year will be the Show’s “Retro” area – which will include a large colourful marquee with stalls inside selling retro/vintage goods and tasty treats. There will also be a stage inside

with live music over both days including performances from The Mersey Belles, Brandon Walton, Moonshiners and The Rodeos Duo.

Also new for this year, is a dedicated children’s area offering entertainment from The Maniax, a hilarious fast moving show with lots of tricks and gags, magic and silliness form Banana Brains Fun Show and fantastic activities including space hoppers, giant Jenga and more! Live music will feature heavily on the menu of

this year’s show, with the Music Marquee hosting performances from bands such as King Pleasure and the Biscuit Boys, At the Arcade, Tom Masters, Papa Legba’s, Julie Felix and The Fab4. All the old Rotherham Show favourites will still be there, from the dog show to the horticultural marquee, the vintage vehicle rally to the emergency services and military displays, as well as numerous stalls, fairground rides and refreshment vendors. Cllr Sarah Allen, Rotherham Council’s Cabinet

Member for Cleaner, Greener Communities, said: “Rotherham Show attracts tens of thousands of visitors to what is an amazing free weekend of family entertainment. “This year’s Show will have all the popular family favourites, plus some new attractions, such as the new Retro area. If you’ve never visited before, the 2018 Rotherham Show is not to be missed!” To help cover the Show’s running costs, a £5 per car parking charge on Herringthorpe Playing Fields has been

or FREEPHONE 0800 046 1502

introduced for this year’s event. “We want to continue running this great free show, which has delighted the public of Rotherham and beyond for almost 40 years, and this parking charge will enable us to help cover the costs of staging this event,” added Cllr Allen. “By generating income in this way we can continue to offer free entry to the Show itself, while improving the variety of entertainment on offer year on year, to all who visit.”

A MAGNIFICENT NEW SHOW CELEBRATING 250 YEARS OF CIRCUS Zippos Circus is back in Sheffield with a brandnew show – ‘LEGACY’ - celebrating the 250th anniversary of circus entertainment. Expect a spectacle like no other as extraordinary equestrians, astonishing acrobats, comical clowns and dashing daredevils join together in the ring to pay homage to Englishman and charismatic impresario Philip Astley, who invented the worldwide sensation that is circus in 1768. Mr Astley’s first-ever circus began in London and toured extensively from its early days. Audiences across the country can expect to see some of the amazing horse acts which thrilled the public in Georgian times, now performed by master equestrians The Khadikov Riders. Their astonishing repertoire will include the recreation of a rarely seen and daring equestrian act called ‘The Courier of Saint Petersburg’ which audiences have marvelled at for generations. The electrifying cast also introduces timeless comics - modern clown Totti with his wife Charlotte, herself a traditional White Face Clown from Belgium; and Brazilian Capoeira comic acrobat Paulo Dos Santos– a brilliant 3 foot 11 inches tall showman who starred most recently at Ringling Bros and Barnum & Bailey. Dos Santos won first place in Brazil’s National Capoeira Championships and his antics will incorporate elements of Capoeira (a Brazilian mixed

Cirque du Soleil is bringing their brand-new UK arena show OVO the the FlyDSA Arena this month. A celebration of nature and co-existence will bring its fun-filled production for the whole family to arenas around the country. The show made its UK debut in Londons Royal Albert Hall back in January to some amazing press reviews - the arena tour will play 7 performances in Sheffield at the FlyDSA Arena 22nd – 26th August 2018. The cast of OVO is comprised of 50 performing artists from 17 countries specializing in many acrobatic acts. This includes Alanna Baker from the United Kingdom who plays the role of the Black Spider in the show. She was crowned gymnastics European Champion in 2011 and won Bronze in the World Championships in 2012. Alanna, who has been training since she was five years old has travelled around the world with OVO to countries as far reaching as Japan and Australia and is now set for a return to her home here in the UK. Having thrilled more than 5 million people worldwide since the show premiered in Montreal in 2009 as a Big Top show, OVO embarks on a journey, offering the same captivating production as the Big Top performances, but on a larger scale now, visiting major arenas and venues, including those around the UK. OVO, meaning “egg” in Portuguese, is a headlong rush into a colourful ecosystem teeming with life, where insects work, eat, crawl, flutter, play, fight and look for love in a non-stop riot of energy and movement. When a mysterious egg appears in their midst, the insects are awestruck and intensely curious about this iconic object that represents the enigma and cycles of their lives. It is love at first sight when a gawky, quirky insect arrives in this bustling community and a fabulous ladybug catches his eye – and the feeling is mutual. The Creative Team behind the world of OVO is: Artistic Guides Guy Laliberté and Gilles Ste-Croix; Writer, Director and Choreographer Deborah

TRAVEL UPDATE HERITAGE FESTIVAL DRIVING AFTER 70

If you’re over 70 and want to keep on driving, you’ll have to renew your driving licence. Once you reach the age of 70, your licence expires, but this doesn’t automatically mean you have to stop driving. You just need to renew your driving licence if you want to continue. You’ll need to renew it every 3 years after that. Renewal is free of charge. If your licence expires and you don’t apply for a new one, you won’t legally be allowed to drive. The DVLA will send you a D46P application form 90 days before your 70th birthday. If you have a photocard licence To renew, fill in the form and return it to the DVLA with your current driving licence photocard. You may also need to include a new passport-type photo – the form will tell you if you need to do this. If you apply by post it can take up to three weeks. If you have a paper licence To renew, fill in the form and enclose an upto-date passport-type photo. If you apply by post it can take up to three weeks. This means the annual salary for a tram driver will rise by over £1700 over the three years and Conductor salaries will rise by £1600 over the same period. Supertram made the offer - which is higher than the current average pay settlement in the UK economy - during talks with Unite the union in Sheffield last week. All planned strike action has been suspended. Meanwhile the latest phase of rail replacement will continue: Area 3 Gleadless Townend – Herdings Park: work is scheduled to begin on this section from Friday 10th Aug to Sunday 19th Aug. Changes to services in South Yorkshire New timetables for bus, tram and train services in South Yorkshire take place from 1st September - to see if your services are affected please see the website www.travelsouthyorkshire.com/servicechanges

Every September some 40,000 volunteers across England organise 5,000 events to celebrate our fantastic history and culture. It’s your chance to see hidden places and try out new experiences – all of which are FREE to explore. For the first time in its 24-year history, Heritage Open Days – England’s largest festival of culture and history – will take place over two consecutive weekends in September. This year, in recognition of the centenary of the Universal Suffrage Act, there will be hundreds of events taking place on the theme of ‘Extraordinary Women’ – focusing on both well-known and less celebrated women. In addition, Heritage Open Days is launching a second Unsung Stories project, following on from the critically acclaimed LGBTQ events last year. put her forward, a groundbreaking artistic collaboration, will see the creation of up to 25 new 3-D modelled figurines of present day ‘Extraordinary Women’. Interactive theatre makers non zero one will source nominations for community heroines in towns and cities, as well as online; selected candidates will be permanently commemorated with statues unveiled over the HODs weekend. “Every year, Heritage Open Days becomes a more diverse and fascinating festival,” says patron, Lloyd Grossman. “We continue to celebrate all aspects of local heritage, with thousands of other walks, talks, openings and events – all of them FREE!” With more than one hundred events organized around Sheffield over two weekends from 6th September 2018, there is something for everyone. Learn more about your area and it’s heritage, visit the website for full details. www.heritageopendays.org.uk/

I DON’T: BRITS DON’T KNOW FACT FROM FICTION WHEN IT COMES TO MARRIAGE LAWS

There’s no doubt summer is the height of wedding season in the UK, but just how much does the nation know about one of the biggest legal contracts they will ever enter? The University of Law, the UK’s longest-established specialist provider of legal education and training, has reviewed some of the world’s strangest marriage laws, and polled 2,000 UK residents¹ to see if the nation can spot which laws are real, and which are fake.

When it comes to UK weddings, three-quarters of the nation (75%) thought the law that “couples in England and Wales must specify a room within a building for the ceremony to take place – not in the open air or under a marquee” was untrue, when it is in fact a condition to gain approval of premises for civil marriage and partnership. Couples wishing for a garden wedding must have the legal ceremony separately before or after the big day. Another UK law that the nation struggled to identify as real, was about the requirements for a legally granted divorce. This law has recently been under fire thanks to a selection of high profile cases, but as it stands, the only way to successfully achieve a divorce is if one party takes the blame for the marriage falling apart – a fact over half (58%) thought was false.

On the other side of the spectrum, for those successful marriages racking up 65 years together, more than one in ten (12%) believed a marriage license renewal was required in the eyes of the law – a statement which is not true in the UK. It’s not just strange UK marriage laws that confused the nation though, the survey also included several real and fake marriage laws from around the world to test the nation’s knowledge. Probably the most baffling being the law which states women in Saudi Arabia have legal grounds for divorce if their husband fails to bring them a fresh cup of joe in the morning, a fact that more than four in five (86%) didn’t know. Others that stumped the nation include the Russian law which makes it illegal for the groom’s family to contribute to the wedding costs, a law two thirds (65%) of those asked weren’t familiar with, and Austria’s legal requirement for couples to court a minimum of five years before they’re allowed to tie the knot - something three quarters (75%) failed to know. Probably the strangest of marriage laws in the United States is one surprisingly known by 44% of Brits - married couples in Massachusetts are not legally allowed to sleep nude in a rented room. Similarly, 44% knew that in Kansas, the mistreatment of mothers-in-law can be used as grounds for divorce.

CLUBLAND TURNS OUT IN FORCE TO SUPPORT JIMMY CAROL APPEAL Clubland turned out in force to support the Jimmy Carol fund raising evening on Wednesday August 1st at Rotherham Trades. Queues formed at 6pm with doors not opening till 7. Rotherham Trades and indeed clubland itself - had not witnessed scenes like it for many years! The artist appearing in the show - organised by Ivor Hillman from 80s duo Echo Beach - couldn't have wished for a better night. The amount of love and respect for Jimmy within the industry was demonstrated by the

sheer number of artists wanting to give up their time and help with the cause - including former X Factor Winner Sam Bailey. All Artistes gave tremendous spots culminating in a standing ovation for Sam Bailey. Artistes appearing: Compere - Louise Bolton, with Gina Ross, Joe Ross, Loren Kennedy, Robert Linacre, Echo Beach, Paul Morris, Marc Bolton, Sam Bailey and Here's Jonny, with appearances from guest singers Danny Barton and Johnny Steele A Special mention

must be made of all who helped, both with the planning and on the night - Tanya Walker, Maxine Santana, Julie Hillman, Sam Lyons, Helen Marie and Daughter, Kirsty Stuttard, and Gary Mason. - with apologies to anyone we’ve missed off! Thanks also to Matthew Twigg for his pie and peas and all who donated Auction prizes and raffle prizes. Finally, special thanks to the Trades for hosting the event and all who turned up to make it such a fantastic evening!

JIMMY CAROL APPEAL SHOW

A whopping £5000 has now been raised for the Jimmy Carol fund. It was therefore timely to hear the news on Thursday that Jimmy was well enough to make the return flight to the UK (by air ambulance) and he is now safley in the care of Slaford Hospital, being treated by the same time who recently helped Sir Alex Ferguson in his recovery. Hopefully this represents the first in Jimmy’s recovery and rehabilitation and we will continue to keep you updated in this column. A new breastfeeding room at the Moor Market, in the city centre, was officially opened last Friday as part of Sheffield’s celebrations to mark World Breastfeeding Week (1-7 August). Mums, and mums-to-be, attended the event where they came together with infant support workers to offer support to breastfeeding mums, encourage expectant parents and raise awareness about the benefits of breastfeeding. The opening of the new breastfeeding room in the Moor Market is part of Sheffield’s initiative to encourage public places and workplaces across the city to become breastfeeding friendly. These places offer a good level of facilities and support to provide a comfortable feeding environment for mums, plus an additional reassurance from the staff and venue that they are supportive of their feeding. Rebecca Carpenter, mum to seven month old Zoe, said: “I wasn’t very confident about breastfeeding at first and I found it hard work. But now I’m over the hill and we’re getting on well with it. I’m hoping to use the new room when I’m in next in town.” Councillor Jackie Drayton, Sheffield City Council’s cabinet member for children and families said: “I would encourage all new mums and mums-to-be to breast feed even for

a short time, as it gives your child a great start in life. “I know that sometimes it’s not always easy, but we have a fantastic team of breastfeeding support and I’m proud that Sheffield City Council operates a breastfeeding friendly policy. It’s important to give mums the choice to breastfeed publicly or privately, but you should never feel like you have to hide away.” Breastfeeding rates in Sheffield are the highest in Yorkshire, with nearly 80 per cent of new mothers breastfeeding their babies (according to 2016/17 rates). Sheffield is the only place to receive the prestigious Unicef baby friendly award in Yorkshire and Humber recognising the city’s work promoting breastfeeding. The city hopes to apply for Unicef’s Gold Award accreditation later this year. If you would like to find out more information or get support and information about breastfeeding please contact your infant support worker at your local family centre or go to www. breastfeedinginsheffield.co.uk

ANGLER’S CORNER

with Clint Walker

After the last couple of sessions, fishing tactics I don’t particularly care for, it was a delight to get back to something I do enjoy, but don’t do often enough; float fishing. I mean the simple art of casting a float, sinking the line, watching the float cock and settle slowly, before (hopefully) sliding away to indicate a fish… simple stuff, but great fun! I don’t use a pole either. I’ve tried it once, and got awful back ache, so it’s not for me, but on a sunny day, I love to flick a dart or a waggler out in front of me and see what happens…it’s blissful! I chose to visit a local club water on the Fenton and District Angling Cub card, a four pool complex named Dilhorne Pools. Pool two has been kind to me over winter, producing a number of quality pike as I’ve spent time sitting beneath the trees waiting for hungry predators to pick up my deadbaits, and I’ve also done well in a previous session on the ‘tip. This would be the first time floatfishing the water, and I was looking forward to seeing what it would throw up. On arrival, I walked the banks and chatted to a few anglers. One had been there an hour, and had nothing between two rods, the other had been there all night, and had nothing since the early hours of the morning… not very encouraging at all! I picked a shady spot on the back of the wind, and quickly put together a single rod before selecting a 2BB quill which

I intended to fish tight to the edge of lilies to my front. I plumbed up, finding a uniform three feet of water a rod length out, then shotted my float to allow the bait to fall slowly through the water. A handful of corn and pellet mix was deposited at the edge of the greenery, a single grain of corn nicked onto a size 16 hook, and I swung out the float to settle in front of me. But it wouldn’t settle. Surely, I hadn’t dropped a shot already? I hadn’t it was a bite on the drop, and after a few seconds of deliberation, I lifted the rod and felt a kick at the other end as a plump roach was hooked and then swung to hand. Lovely! I flicked in a few more kernels of corn, and repeated the cast, lift, swing evolution to bring another shiny roach to the bank. This continued for an hour or so, with plenty of bites missed as tiny roach and rudd nipped at the corn, and plenty hit as bream and bigger roach swarmed into the peg. I’d kept my eye on other anglers who were struggling, with only a couple of carp caught, so thought I was doing well. Despite happily catching silvers, I soon noted a pair of orange tails wafting at my feet as a pair of carp moved in to mop up bait I dropped into the margin. I didn’t adjust the depth of the float rig at all, choosing instead to hang the bait in front of them and wait for the rod to double over. And it soon did! The first carp of the day lay on the mat, and I estimated it to weigh around 8lb. Added to my total of silver fish, and I reckoned I’d had about 20lb of fish whilst others watched motionless tips and listened to silent alarms. My float rarely stayed still, and I kept swinging in fish

with regular ease… Alan dropped into the peg next door. He explained that it was the first time he had been fishing on his own, so I offered my assistance should he need it (as we all should) but he respectfully declined and told me he wanted to learn from his mistakes. Fair enough, but I kept a close eye all the same… My float slid away again, and I connected with solid resistance. At first, I thought it was a fish, but soon realised that I was attached to nothing more than a small piece of discarded plastic bag. It came skittering across the surface and WHAM! A pike leapt from cover and snatched at the bag! My float rod bent over as the pike grabbed the ‘bait’ but it soon snapped upright as the predator realised its error and let go, but it set the scene for the next hour as the pike snaffled several fish that I wasn’t able to steer away! If it didn’t get them on the way in, it ambushed them on the way out as I released them… pesky thing! I had no pike tackle with me to move the interloper, so put down the float rod to pour a cup of tea, when Alan suddenly shouted for assistance. He had caught only a single silver bream all day, then as he turned to pick up something from his tackle box, his rod was hauled from the rest by a carp, and towed across towards the far bank! We both watched as it carved a bow wave across the lake before stopping just in front of the far side where it remained, floating in the margins. I quickly whipped out the leger rod, tied a weight to the end, and jogged across to the far bank to try and snare the missing tackle. At the second time of asking, my weight dropped over the reel, and I was able to bring it to the side where Alan grabbed it gratefully. The carp was still on the other end, but as Alan lifted the rod, the line twisted around the butt ring and snapped, and also removed the tip from the end of his top section! Left holding the end of the line, he tried to use the rod as a buffer, but the carp quickly snapped him for the second time and slipped away… At least he got his reel back and learned a couple of valuable lessons; always use adequate breaking strain line, and never take your eyes off your rod! Returning to my peg, I managed to trip up another margin feeding carp, again of around 8lb, then continued with my plundering of a shoal of silver fish, all taking tiny pieces of corn on the drop, to

tally a net of around 40lb. A final ‘cast’ saw me bank the biggest carp of the day at about 10lb, before I started to pack up and get ready for home. On the car park, Alan and I compared notes, to find he had still only had a single fish but was happy to have learned enough to make things easier for his next visit, which is what it’s all about. Elsewhere around the lake, I’d noticed odd carp and bream caught, but little else, so I reckon I got lucky again when I chose my peg… It was a very enjoyable session, with plenty of variety, and plenty of bites to keep me busy all day… I just wish I could have caught that pike too… Maybe next time…

EXPERIENCE SHOWS THE STANDARD

It may have been a difficult start to the Sky bet Championship season, but assistant manager Richie Barker says the experience at Griffin Park has given the squad a benchmark for the future. The Millers were dealt a tough opening day fixture against Dean Smith’s side, but Barker says the Millers will take positives from the defeat, stating that the early season experience will focus the squad’s attention to the level they need to achieve. Brentford’s experience of playing regularly at Championship level over a period time was clear for Barker to see, with the former striker stating the Millers need to be more clinical if they are to compete with the rest of the division. “There was nothing from Brentford that we didn’t expect, we knew exactly how good they could be and there were some aspects of what they did that we managed to stop,” Barker told www.themillers.co.uk “Their quality on the day and they way they have been together as a group for three or four years obviously shone through. The one positive to come out of the game is that the players have a better

understanding of what the level is about. “You have to work harder for your chances. I thought that we kept our shape really well, we limited them to opportunities in general play, but they were just far more clinical than we were and that is something that we will all have to take on board.” With the Millers behind early on, Paul Warne’s side worked their way back into the contest before the break with Joe Newell seeing an effort saved after a well-worked move. Brentford’s second and third just before and after the interval swung the contest back into the home side’s favour, with Barker reiterating that with Millers now operating at a higher level, there won’t always be second opportunities in front of goal. “There is no question that the better team won on the day,” he continued.“But we did have two or three half decent chances when the score close and there was a possibility of turning the game around. We didn’t take those chances. At League One level, there is always another chance around the corner, you have to work harder for your chances at this level. You have to be more clinical. Realistically the two 18-yard boxes predominantly made the difference at the end. That will be the case more and more often in this league. “This weekend will be a different game and it will be nice to be back on home soil. We always fancy ourselves in home games, we always feel when the crowd get behind us, we are a real force. We have gone through the positives and negatives from the weekend, we are looking to learn from the negatives and turn them into positives. Everyone is now aware of what is expected at this particular level.”

MILLERS PAY TRIBUTE TO BARRY ‘CHUCKLE’ ELLIOTT 1944-2018 Rotherham United were deeply saddened to learn of the passing of our life president, friend and supporter Barry ‘Chuckle’ Elliott, aged 73. Barry, alongside brother Paul, provided countless hours of entertainment in a 50-year career, and would always champion his beloved Rotherham United in their immensely popular shows. Barry will be best remembered for the TV show ChuckleVision which ran for 292 episodes between 1987 and 2009, with one episode famously filmed at Millmoor where the duo represented Rotherham United. The club were delighted to make the duo honorary life presidents of the Millers in 2007, and despite their packed touring schedule they would often visit the AESSEAL New York Stadium to watch the Millers in action. Chairman Tony Stewart added his condolences to many others this morning after hearing the sad news, telling www.themillers.co.uk that Barry will be sorely missed at the AESSEAL New York Stadium. “First and foremost Barry was a brilliant entertainer who gave great joy to generations of people in a

career spanning 50 years. “He was also a huge fan of the Millers, and whenever there was a chance he, along with Paul, would be here at the AESSEAL New York Stadium watching his beloved club in action. “Barry and Paul are two of our most recognisable supporters, who would often mention the Millers in their popular TV and stage shows, really putting our club on the entertainment map. “Barry loved the Millers, and we loved Barry. He was a funny, likeable and entertaining person who was always welcomed with open arms by staff and supporters whenever he was in town. “Our thoughts are now with Barry’s family and friends, including his brother and entertainment partner Paul, during this sad time.” Earlier today Paul Elliott said: “I’ve not just lost my brother, I’ve lost my theatrical partner of many, many years and my very best friend.” Manager Phil Dale also said this morning: “It is with great sadness that the family announce that Barry passed away peacefully at his home surrounded by his wife Ann and all his family. “The family would like to express their thanks to the many people who have been fans of the Chuckle Brothers and they know that they will share in part the great, great loss they feel.” Everyone at Rotherham United would like to express our deepest condolences to Barry’s family and friends, and of course Paul, at this difficult time. Once a Miller, always a Miller.

MCCANN HAPPY WITH WINNING START Manager Grant McCann was happy with the way his team saw the game out on a breathless opening day away at Southend United on Saturday. Rovers started their Sky Bet League One campaign with a 3-2 victory on the road with goals from Marquis, Wilks and Rowe sealing three points, and McCann was pleased to get his first win. “It felt like I’d never been away really, someone said to me the other day, and there’s been a lot made of it, about will this team score goals, we’ve just scored three goals away at Southend and come away with three points,” he said. “I expect us to go home and get another win next week now, then the week after when we’re on the road again, I want nine points from the first three games, it helps if you get off to a good start in this league, once you get yourself up there, others are

playing catch up. “We deserved the win 100 per cent, you don’t go away to Southend, score three goals and not deserved the victory, yes, we rode our luck at times, but not many teams will take anything from them here this season.” Saturday’s win in Essex marked McCann’s first competitive game in charge of Rovers, but for the new manager, he felt like he’d never been away, and now he is looking for more of the same. “That’s what playing under me is all about, I said that to the players in the dressing room after the game, that’s the way I play, we’ve come to a team that are probably one of the best in the league at home and we’ve dominated them in the secondhalf,” he added. “We might give some of the fans a heart attack this year, but that’s just the way I set my teams up to play like that, we like to be positive, maybe not so much early on, but after the break we showed how good a team we can be. “It’s always a hard place to come, and Chris Powell has done a great job in making it that way, not many teams will go there and take three points away this season, there’s going to be a lot of sides looking at us today after this result I’m sure.” Rovers are looking to build on this victory when Wycombe Wanderers visit in the first home game of the season on Saturday August 11.

WILKS: ROVERS THE BEST FIT FOR ME Forward Mallik Wilks says Rovers were the best fit for him after turning down offers from other EFL clubs before joining Grant McCann’s side. The 19-year-old who is on a six-month loan deal from Sky Bet Championship side Leeds United, says he is looking forward to making the step-up to League One. “There were other clubs interested but I always though that moving to Doncaster would be the best option for me because of the way the gaffer plays football, it suits me and I think I might be able to get more game time,” he said.

“I did not want to go back to League Two as I wanted to move forward after winning the league with Accrington Stanley last season, so I am looking forward to making the step-up to League One. “The way the gaffer plays means that we can hit teams on the break and that can kill teams in this league, and I think you could see that in the way we played against Southend United.” Rovers kicked off their Sky Bet League One season in impressive fashion with a 3-2 victory against Southend on Saturday, and Wilks says the side have the talent to achieve promotion to the Championship. “There is a good group of lads here and I honestly believe the talent that we have in this squad, we can go on to achieve promotion this season,” he added. “John Marquis is a great finisher and he is a a character in the changing rooms which is always good, I am looking forward to playing alongside him this season. “I get along with everybody in the squad to be honest, there isn’t anyone that I don’t like, and there is a very tight unit here.”

WILDER LEFT BLADES SUFFER LATE DEFEAT IN SEASON OPENER FRUSTRATED

United’s 2018/19 campaign began with an unfortunate defeat at Bramall Lane in front of the Sky cameras. George Baldock opened the scoring just after the hour, but goals from Oli McBurnie and Yan Dhanda saw Swansea come from behind to snatch all three points late on. For the televised opener, Wilder named three of his new signings in the starting XI. Henderson, Egan and McGoldrick all made their competitive home debuts, whilst Woodburn was on the bench. The Blades received a raucous welcome to the pitch, but it was Swansea who tested Henderson twice in the opening exchanges from two free-kicks. United hit back though and after Clarke had out run Van Der Hoorn and helped win a corner, Evans played it short to McGoldrick before whipping in a cross from the left that narrowly evaded the run of O’Connell and Basham. The game ebbed and flowed, with no goalscoring chances of note as the clock ticked past the half hour mark, although tempers frayed somewhat when Stevens caught Fernandez accidently, prompting a reaction from City’s bench. Moments later, United had appeals for a penalty waved away by referee Simpson as Basham went down under a challenge from Fernandez. Fulton then lost the ball on halfway and

McGoldrick saw his effort deflected over for a corner, from which O’Connell headed over at the back post, the last meaningful action of the half. The Blades were almost caught out at the beginning of the second period after McKay got the better of Basham, but a combination of O’Connell and Egan blocked Asoro’s goal bound effort. At the other end, United had the best chance of the game in the 58th minute, Celina carless gave away the ball and McGoldrick advanced towards goal before dragging his effort wide. A minute later, United were gifted an even better opening, McGoldrick teed up Lundstram, but the midfielder sliced his effort wide from an excellent position, although he looked to make amends immediately chasing 50 yards before tackling Olsson. In response, Carroll fired an effort over. But the Blades did

finally take a deserved lead just after the hour, some neat play in the left resulted in Lundstram cutting the ball back for BALDOCK to side foot past the desperate dive of Nordfelt. Swansea threatened a response five minutes later, but Henderson was at his best to tip over Fulton’s looping header over. But the equaliser came in their next attack, a swift move forward, saw Fleck and Henderson try to avert the danger, but the ball fell kindly MCBURNIE who fired into the net. City lifted by restoring parity sensed a second, and it almost came from the head of McBurnie after Montero had got the better of Baldock. And they came even closer in the 83rd minute as McKay rattled the crossbar, from another Montero centre. With four minutes remaining, Swansea did take the lead. Montero again got free on the right and McKay teed up

substitute DHANDA to score with his first touch. United tried to respond and almost got a helping hand from Roberts, but Nordfelt tipped the ball wide for a corner, from which Evans headed over. Four minutes of added time we signalled, but despite United’s best efforts, City held on to claim the win, with the last action seeing Egan’s effort saved by Nordfelt.

make more than 300 appearances for the club in the 60s and 70s scoring 54 goals and winning 17 England international caps. He was officially voted as the Blades’ best player of all time at the club’s 125th anniversary event in 2014. In comes after the South Stand at Bramall Lane was recently renamed the Tony Currie Stand to celebrate 50 years since he first signed for the Blades. Tony, 68, said: “I am absolutely delighted to become a director of the Club. Who would have thought when I started out with the Blades as a teenager that I would now hold this position? To be recognised in this way is very special. “It has been a fantastic 50th anniversary year of me signing for United. People at the Club have been so great to me organising things this year. This is the latest one, following on from the stand being named after me. “Sheffield United means

everything to me. It has become my life, it is my life. If I had stayed and become manager and got fired, then I would probably not have had this relationship. I would have probably gone somewhere else and that would have been the end of the Sheffield relationship. “So, I am glad that I have been able to spend the time with the best supporters in the world and the greatest club. “I will be sitting in board meetings, listening to everything that goes on and, if I am needed, to have an input on the football side, I am entitled to do so. It will be very daunting for me, it will be something totally new at my age. I am looking forward to it,” added Tony. After retiring from the game following his illustrious career, Tony took charge of Sheffield United’s Football in the Community programme before becoming Blades Ambassador a decade ago.

Sheffield United’s greatest ever player has been appointed as a director of the football club. In the week before the 2018/19 season kicks off, Tony Currie has taken on a new role on the board of Sheffield United FC Ltd. Widely regarded Blades fans as “one of our own”, the midfield maestro first joined the Blades as a teenager in 1968. He went on to

The Blades boss was disappointed with defeat, but puts it simply: "we didn't defend properly and were punished". Chris Wilder was left frustrated, following Saturday's opening day loss at home to Swansea City. George Baldock fired home early in the second-half in front of the Kop, but goals from Oli McBurnie and a late effort from substitute Yan Dhanda won it for the Swans, much to the annoyance of the Blades boss. He remarked: "We got our noses in front in what was a tight game, but when you defend poorly like that you'll get punished. "They didn't opened us at all really, they had some decent possession in the middle of the park and at the back, but we created the best chances and there is no way we should be walking away with a defeat. "But it isn't an unlucky story, we haven't deBlades: Henderson, fend properly and we've been punished, again Baldock, Stevens, the game has been decided in both boxes." Fleck, O’Connell, Wilder added: "For their first goal we've Basham (Duffy 87), pressed when we didn't need to, we're then out Lundstram (Sharp of shape, they've played round us and we've 79), Evans, Clarke, not tracked runners. Egan, McGoldrick "The second one, we've got four on three at the back, we make another poor decision to go (Woodburn 72). and try and win the ball and we end up leaving Unused: Leonard, ourselves exposed. Stearman, Lafferty, "Enda defends the goal rather than the lad at Moore. the back stick, it would have been a penalty but the other lad has slammed it in and I've got no Swansea: Nordfelt, complaints about the result, because we didn't Olsson (Grimes 72), defend properly." Van Der Hoorn, "We've got no points from the first game and Fernandez, McBurnie, having worked hard to get into a winning posiCelina, Carooll, tion, we've basically chucked it away." Asoro (Montero 63), McKay, Roberts, Fulton (Dhanda 85). Unused: Dyer, Roden, Amat, Mulder.

WE’LL BOUNCE BACK, SAYS BALDOCK

George Baldock insists United will bounce back in a positive manner, following an opening day setback against Swansea City at Bramall Lane. Baldock fired the Blades in front, only for the visitors to hit back twice to complete what seemed an unlikely turnaround. And United’s number two, says they only had themselves to blame, he remarked: “It was a really tight game, there wasn’t much in it and like the Gaffer said afterwards, it was a kind of a safe game where both sides didn’t want to lose. “So to get ourselves in front and end up losing having conceding two goals like we did is bitterly disappointing and we’ll have to work hard to put it right. “We got the goal at a good time and we felt comfortable and they’ve not carved us open once really. We’ve given away two sloppy goals and it’s proved decisive, but there are 45 games to go and there will be lots of ups and downs to come.” Baldock added: “We relish tests like Middlesbrough, an excellent team at a lovely stadium and we just can’t wait to get back out there again on Tuesday and put it right. “It’s a team game, you can see that in the way we play, we leave it all out there and I’d trade any goal I score for three points. “We’re so close to being a very good team, it’s small margins and nothing is won or lost after one game, so it’s down to us to bounce back.”

WE MUST DO BETTER Jos Luhukay insists the Owls can and must do better when they host Hull next Saturday. The Championship season kicked off with Wednesday going down 3-2 at Wigan in an entertaining encounter over the Pennines.

And Luhukay acceded to the fact that improvement is required when the curtain rises at Hillsborough next Saturday. He said: “I think it is true that we have to do better than what we saw today. This is not the kind of

performance we have been building up in the weeks we have had together in preseason. “In the defence we allowed more shots today than many of the game last season. “We did okay going forward, more so in

2018/19

the second half, and we could have got an equaliser. “But while I would have taken that, I think that would have been hard on Wigan because they were the better side, there is no discussion there.”

OWLS FRUSTRATED IN OPENING GAME An absorbing contest over the Pennines saw the Owls make the short hop home with nothing to show from a five-goal thriller with Wigan. Michael Jacobs opened the scoring before Atdhe Nuhiu - later to see red - equalised only for Jacobs to bag a second. Nick Powell put the Latics in the box seat after the break but

Fernando Forestieri pulled another one back for Wednesday. But it was too much for the visitors and despite finishing the stronger, Wednesday’s luck was out and they finished with ten men when Nuhiu saw an earlier yellow card upgraded to red. It was a warm welcome to the new Championship campaign in every sense as a frantic start

unfolded beneath the Lancashire sun. Nuhiu almost broke free on goal inside five minutes following some trickery from Adam Reach before the enterprising Owls won two corners and bossed the ball. But the Latics emerged into the contest and after showing brief glimpses of threat, took the lead on 11 minutes.

A loose ball fell kindly into the path of Jacobs, whose low drive was deflected away from and over the unfortunate Cameron Dawson in goal. It took just eight minutes, though, for Wednesday to get back on terms. Reach sent a driven cross into the box and Nuhiu was on hand to slot past Christian Walton after his first shot was stabbed off the line. And five minutes later in an incredibly open contest, Wigan restored their lead, with Jacobs doubling his tally. A deep cross from the right was skewed by Will Grigg but when Wednesday failed to clear their lines, the advancing Jacobs smashed low and hard into the middle of the net. Calm was needed such was the frenetic nature of the start but

Jacobs was having none of that and came within a whisker of signing off the first half with a treble but his angled curler smashed against the frame of the goal. If the Owls thought that was a let-off, they were punished on the hour when Wigan extended their lead. Wednesday lost the ball on halfway and Gavin Massey advanced to force Dawson into a block save but Powell was on the spot to apply the final touch. But the Owls were far from beaten and halved the deficit on 68 minutes. Reach found substitute Lucas Joao lurking on the edge of the area and the Portuguese cleverly fed Forestieri, who picked his spot to beat Walton. The action was nonstop and three times in one mad minute it was almost game

over. First, James Vaughan climbed off the bench to head against the bar, then Massey forced a super save from Dawson when the goal was gaping. Vaughan did find the net moments later but his header was ruled out for offside, triggering a grandstand finish at the DW Stadium. Wednesday looked the more likely as they sought a late leveller but those plans were thwarted when Nuhiu picked up a second yellow card in stoppage time to compound a frustrating start to 2018/19.
