IT’S PLAYTIME AS INVESTMENT IN CITY’S PARKS PAYS OFF In March 2017 Sheffield City Council announced plans to invest £1.5m in to its parks over a three year period, to upgrade outdoor facilities in the parts of Sheffield where health needs are the greatest. Following development plans, work started at the beginning of this year to upgrade playgrounds and multi-use games areas (MUGAs) in various locations including Brightside, Hillsborough, Highfields and Richmond. Councillor Mary Lea, Cabinet Member for Culture, Parks and Leisure
at Sheffield City Council, said: “We in Sheffield are proud of our green and open spaces. Our huge city parks attract hundreds of visitors, but we also know how valuable our smaller community parks are to the people who live nearby. It has been proven that outdoor spaces play an important role in improving mental and physical wellbeing, whether through walking, running, cycling or just playing, which is why we’re committed to providing high quality spaces and facilities in the areas they are most needed.
In this first year of investment alone, we have completed major refurbishment work to Norfolk Heritage Park playgrounds and upgraded nine other local parks. I’m thrilled we’ve been able to complete all of this improvement work in time for the summer holidays, allowing local people to get out and enjoy our parks to the full.” As well as Norfolk Heritage Park playgrounds’ full refurbishment, further funds have been spent on improving playgrounds at Brightside Recreation Ground, Cardwell
Drive, Hillsborough Park, Springwell Drive, Middlewood Park and Richmond Park, and on improvements to MUGAs at Richmond, Duchess Road and Philadelphia Gardens. Sites were prioritised for improvement by looking at the areas with the highest levels of deprivation, including health inequalities combined with mapping the quality and standards of outdoor spaces. This method allowed the Parks and Countryside service to identify and improve parks and green spaces in
areas where health needs were the greatest and facilities most in need of improvement. Works completed this year include installation of a range of new playground facilities, from toddler play units, to parkour inspired agility equipment. Other work has included the much needed improvement of outdated and uninspiring ball game facilities, where new MUGAs have been created to encourage physical activity and sports opportunities for communities. DONCASTER COUNCIL APPROVES PLANS TO INCREASE ACCESS TO PLAYING PITCHES Doncaster Council has approved a new playing pitch strategy following 12 months work in partnership with Sport England and sports national governing bodies. The strategy focuses on playing pitches for the five sports of cricket, rugby, hockey, bowls and football with and aim to protect and support investment that main-
tains and improves access for the benefit of local residents. It forms an important part of the wider Get Doncaster Moving programme to increase levels of physical activity, and will not only see pitches protected, but enhanced and promoted to encourage residents to take part in more sport. The plans will also help to guide local
approaches towards planning and development, taking into account potential population and housing growth, and the increased levels of demand for playing pitches as a result. Pitches and open spaces that are not currently being used will be protected where possible to meet increases in future levels of demand. Councillor Nigel Ball,
Doncaster Council Cabinet Member for Leisure, said: “Access to playing pitches is vitally important for the health and wellbeing of local communities and we have worked closely with Sport England and sports national governing bodies to develop this new strategy. We want to make sure that local playing pitch facilities meet the needs of local residents, both
or FREEPHONE 0800 046 1502
now and in the future. “With the introduction of the Get Doncaster Moving programme, I would like to see levels of sports participation across the Borough increase. The playing pitch strategy plays a key role in providing and promoting sports facilities, supporting local communities to become more physically active and healthier as a result.”

WE DIG THIS! SHEFFIELD CASTLE LOOKS SET TO BE DISCOVERED AGAIN Archaeological work has started at the site of Sheffield Castle in the centre of the city. The work is being carried out by leading archaeological and heritage practice, Wessex Archaeology, and has been commissioned by Sheffield City Council as part of its Castlegate Kickstart regeneration programme in order to determine the level of preservation of the remains of Sheffield’s castle and later industrial development. This will help to shape the future development and enhancement of the former Castle Markets site on Exchange Street. Mili Rajic, Project Manager at Wessex Archaeology, who is running the project, said: “We are delighted to be working with Sheffield City Council, Friends of Sheffield Castle and The University of Sheffield on this
project which has such significance for the city. There has been a lot of interest in this site both in terms of its history and of plans for the future from the local community, so we are delighted that we have so many people and local organisations helping us on this dig. We look forward to reporting back soon with a progress update.” This evaluation work will provide the first opportunity to understand the archaeology of the whole site using modern scientific techniques. The project is a fantastic opportunity to understand more about Sheffield’s medieval past, much of which was lost during the 19th and 20th century development of the city. The trenches will provide the chance to excavate sections across the full width of the medieval castle and moat and in the process reveal more of
Sheffield’s early history. Councillor Mazher Iqbal, cabinet member for business and investment at SCC, said: “This is an exciting project which will both shed light on Sheffield’s lesser known history and help to shape the future of this key site in the regeneration of the Castlegate quarter. The close involvement of the Universities and the Friends of the Castle is also a great example of the importance of our partners in Castlegate.” The project will also include opportunities for volunteers to take part and for the public to visit the excavations on a series of open days. Martin Gorman from Friends of Sheffield Castle said: “This is the first time excavations have taken place on the site of Sheffield Castle for nearly 20 years
so the Friends of Sheffield Castle are naturally excited and delighted to see work start. We very much look forward to working with Wessex Archaeology, the Sheffield City Council and The University of Sheffield on this project and are pleased that our Members and the public have the opportunity to also get involved in the work.’’ John Moreland, The University of Sheffield said: “We are delighted that Wessex Archaeology’s excavations, the first extensive professional campaign on the site of Sheffield Castle, are about to take place. We look forward to working in partnership with Wessex, Friends of Sheffield Castle and the City Council to develop our longstanding interest in the castle, and in the regeneration of Castlegate.”

And to all of you that we will see next year, hold tight! Get practising those songs, polishing off your dancing shoes, let’s make it one to remember.” The announcement comes fresh from George headlining Boardmasters Festival and ahead of his long since sold out autumn 2018 UK tour this November. His acclaimed number 1 album Staying At Tamara’s is officially the biggest selling album released so far this year and remains in the top five of the Official Albums Chart 20 weeks after release, whilst his current single ‘Shotgun’ became his first ever number 1 single in June. Staying At Tamara’s is George’s second UK Number 1 album, hitting the summit in March. Staying At
Tamara’s also features lead single ‘Paradise,’ which peaked at Number 2 in the UK singles chart and has now been certified Platinum, and ‘Hold My Girl’, ‘Pretty Shining People’, ‘Saviour,’ and ‘Don’t Matter Now’. The album is available in digital, CD, cassette and vinyl formats, and arrived nearly four years after the release of his multi-platinum and also-chart topping debut album Wanted On Voyage. Not content with hitting the summit of the album and singles charts, George is also a chart-topping podcaster, with his series George Ezra & Friends shooting straight to number 1 on the iTunes Podcast Chart on launch and being nominated for numerous awards. George Ezra & Friends is a unique podcast series in which he spends an extended period of time with a musician friend in an often intimate, funny and revealing one-to-one conversation. Series 1 recently wrapped up with a no holds barred chat with one of music's all time legends, Elton John, which followed previous episodes with Ed Sheeran, Lily Allen, Sam Smith, Craig David, Rag’n’Bone Man, London Grammar’s Hannah Reid and many more. “FUNERAL POVERTY” GROWING CASH BOOST FOR RESIDENTS’ HOME GAS SAFETY In a grim new sign of what’s been called ‘funeral poverty’, undertakers and hospitals say delays in burials and cremations are increasingly being caused by financial strain on the bereaved. A Freedom of Information request by ITV News has revealed that a quarter of hospital trusts in England have held bodies for three months or more, as families could not afford the cost of a funeral. A survey of 120 funeral directors also revealed that they too have had to keep bodies for up to eight months because families struggled to pay. The latest industry research shows the average cost of a basic funeral now stands at £4,078. Undertakers say price rises are beyond their control with councils increasing charges for burials and cremations. According to the Money Saving Expert site a funeral can cost over £5,000 all-in. If you want a more lavish send-off the cost can soar. So if you’re worried about what kind of funeral you’ll have once you pass away, one option to consider is a funeral plan. What is a funeral plan? Very simply a funeral plan covers the cost of your send-off when you die. You can buy one from a funeral plan provider which then pays the funeral director directly for your ceremony. This means your family won’t have to get involved with any of the finances or administration. What will the plan cover? Typically funeral plans will cover the essentials of a funeral, such as the cost of a coffin, care of the body, transport of the
body to a funeral director and a hearse. It usually won’t include any extras such as such as flowers, catering for a wake, a newspaper notice or extra cars to transport family members. So if you want these you’ll need to let your family know they may need to pay for these at the time. With funeral plans you pay a set amount and the funeral is guaranteed to be paid for if you go through a registered provider. The only time your funeral might not be covered is if you die before finishing your payments or you miss any payments – but as explained above any money you’ve paid will be returned to you. What if I don’t buy a funeral plan and my family doesn’t have enough money to pay for my funeral? Depending on the situation, if the person organising your funeral is on a low income they may qualify to get a funeral payment from the Government. How much they get will vary depending on their circumstances, but the payments will usually cover the burial/cremation fee, cost of documents prepared, transport to the funeral, and up to £700 for other funeral director costs, such as the coffin and hearse. The funeral payment will need to be repaid, and it’s usually taken from your estate before any debts or bills are repaid. Alternatively, if there’s no money in your estate or there’s nobody to arrange one for you, your local council can arrange a Public Health Funeral. This will be a very basic funeral on a set day, though how the service will run varies from council to council.

The team based in Sheffield managed to secure the funds to cover Barnsley, Sheffield and Rotherham, and eligible residents will soon be able apply for funds to help their homes comply with gas safety regulations. The work is designed to address potential gas safety risks, a gas leak or CO poisoning and includes repairs, servicing, testing, gas safety checks and gas servicing. Those who are eligible for a grant must live in privately owned accommodation and be 60 years old or over and have low household income and/ or a disability or be under 60 and have a low household income and/or a disability, or considered exceptionally vulnerable by the HIA. South HIA manager, Layla Gorman, said she was absolutely delighted to be awarded the funds yet again. “This is the 6th year in a row that we have been awarded this money to help our customers. It plays a vital role in enabling people to feel safe and secure in their own homes and brings that little bit of peace of mind. DAVID GEST’S SOUL LEGENDS REUNITE IN SHEFFIELD!
Legends are set to reunite this October to continue David’s legacy with special guest appearances from some of the greatest performers in soul music history at Sheffield City Hall on Monday 15th October. For the past decade music lovers have enjoyed performances from soul legends in a unique show created by the one and only David Gest. Each year he brought together a host of music icons to celebrate their greatest tracks in smash hit international tours, presenting concerts packed with iconic soul hits. After David Gest tragically passed away in April 2016 there was a possibility we’d never see such events again, but David Gest Limited proudly continue David’s legacy with a highly anticipated 2018 tour! This year’s guest appearances include
Eban Brown, former lead singer of The Stylistics ‘You Make Me Feel Brand New’, Gwen Dickey, the voice of Rose Royce, multiplatinum award winning Kenny Thomas, Mari Wilson best known for her UK Top 10 single ‘Just What I always Wanted’ along with the fantastic soul artist Junior. Earlier this year the
David Gest Foundation was set up to help raise money for some of the great causes close to David’s heart. This tour will raise much needed funds to continue that good work. Soul icon Dionne Warwick is patron of the foundation and has welcomed news of the 2018 tour: “I have been part of David’s tours, and as I look at the incredible
line-up of talent that will be coming to 11 cities in the UK to dazzle you, I know a good time will be had by all. Get your tickets now for a major musical treat!” Don’t miss out on seeing some true soul icons perform together all under one roof in the intimate setting of the Oval Hall this October.
A BOOGIE BANK HOLIDAY WEEKEND AT THE WHITE ROSE WITH THREE GREAT EVENTS Firstly there’s an 80’s Party spectacular this Friday at the White Rose, Darnall, who are hosting a Boogie Nights fancy dress special disco. Fancy Dress is optional but could win you a free pint, so dig out that
80’s loud shirt and boogie on down! Then on Sunday there’s another two great sessions; starting at 12.00pm when the kids’ Summer Party springs to life with a host of fun activities, followed by a raffle in aid of the Amy’s House
charity at 4.00pm and Live Music with Sumo from 6.00pm. The White Rose is on Handsworth Road, just off the Parkway, so there’s plenty of Bank Holiday fun to be enjoyed locally with host Rich and his team this weekend.
LIVE EVENTS AT THE PARAMOUNT
Immerse yourself in vocal bliss, with the smooth harmonies and classic songs of group that will never be forgotten. In an all new production – The Beach Boys Smile, touring the UK from 2017. Love of music, vocal harmony and Brian Wilson’s composition are what brings five young and incredibly talented musicians together to form Beach Boys Smile (aka BBS). Their roots can be traced as far back as the 80s when three brothers sang along to the classic surf tunes of the Beach Boys in the car on their way to the sunny beach, radio cranked up high! Every time BBS put on a show, all these memories flood back and put a smile on audiences faces the world over. All the greatest songs and feel of The Beach Boys!!

WE RUN OVER THE HILLS LIVE REVIEW IRON MAIDEN MANCHESTER ARENA
Theatrics have always been part and parcel of the Iron Maiden experience and this latest outing, titled The Legacy of the Best Tour, will be forever etched in band history. With the now famous Churchillain speech booming around the sold out arena a replica spitfire immerged over the stage as the band knocked out openers Aces High, Where Eagles Dare and the epic 2 Minutes to Midnight.
The screams were defining! In typical Maiden fashion production was of the highest order with all band members proving they’re fitter than gangs half their age, as frontman Bruce Dickinson skipped around the stage and above it on the back riser with ease. Sounding vocally superb he spoke little, instead playing with the theme of the show using several costume changes to enhance the songs. Whilst we had many familiar tunes within the sixteen song set, the
lads played the rather rare For The Greater Good Of God and Sign Of The Cross, with various themed drapes, one resembling a chapel complete with stained glass windows, helping to provide great visual effects throughout. Naturally we had Eddie who made a couple of appearances, with Fear Of The Dark, Iron Maiden and Number Of The Beast bringing things to a close. Even in the encore stages Janick Gers was still swinging his guitar around, Nicko McBrain
never missed a beat with Steve Harris, Adrian Smith and Dave Murray looking as fresh as when they opened with the final three, The Evil That Men Do, Hallowed Be Thy Name and Run To The Hills really closing the night in style. As many will know Iron Maiden, who’ve have been at it a while, always provide great live entertainment, unlike the horrible Manchester venue, and for my money are arguably one of the greatest bands ever to walk this earth.

Consortium to develop Sheffield Station masterplan A consortium of world-class architects and engineers will develop a new masterplan for Sheffield Midland Railway Station, transforming it in preparation for the arrival of HS2 and Northern Powerhouse Rail (NPR) services. Atkins, a member of the SNC-Lavalin Group, will lead the consortium, working in partnership with Cushman & Wakefield, Lambert Smith Hampton, Merrett Houmøller Architects and Quatro PR. The team will provide a wide range of services, to not only make sure the station offers a fitting environment when HS2 services begin, but also to unlock the development potential of the surrounding area over the next 20 years; enhance passenger experience in and around the station; and improve connectivity to the station for rail, tram and bus users as well as cyclists and pedestrians. The consortium has been appointed by a partnership comprising Sheffield City Council, Sheffield City Region, London and Continental Railways, Department for Transport, Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government, Transport for the North, Network Rail, HS2 Ltd and South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive. The aim of the commission is to develop a solution that will: • Establish the blueprint for a high-quality and efficient passenger-interchange. • Maximise economic, social and environmental benefits in and around the station. • Shape an ambitious and phased strategy for delivery to maximise short, medium and long-term benefits.
For further information call 01709 543021. To apply send a CV to The Secretary, 40 Morthern Road, Wickersley, S66 1EN
Councillor Mazher Iqbal, cabinet member for business and investment at SCC, said: “This is a clear indication of how important the new HS2
station location is to Sheffield and the wider city region. The station is absolutely central to our city centre masterplan vision to deliver new jobs, businesses and opportunities to the region. It must be delivered in tandem with improving connectivity to the station and in keeping with our ambitions for a green and sustainable city that works for everybody in Sheffield. I look forward to seeing the plans take shape to deliver thousands of new jobs for our economy.” Journey times to London will be reduced by 40 minutes when HS2 services start in 2033, however the development of the station in preparation for high speed rail is expected to bring immediate investment and economic benefits to the city. The improved station will also support more frequent and faster rail services to Manchester, Leeds and other Northern cities, including through the planned Northern Powerhouse Rail programme. The Council’s This is Sheffield Plan, released earlier this year, predicted up to 25,000 new jobs in Sheffield between 2014 and 2024, which could lead to a 15 per cent growth in demand for public transport. The masterplan will help ensure the city region maximises the economic opportunities and impact of improved rail connectivity. Work on the integrated masterplan will be completed in April 2019 and will also be a major element in the wider Sheffield City Region Growth Strategy that is currently in development. Mike Gardner, Atkins Project Director, said: “Our masterplan will help ensure that by the time HS2 arrives in Sheffield, the station will be a focal point for the city and offer a first-class experience for passengers. Crucially, we’re also planning beyond the station to ensure that adjacent commercial and residential developments are a catalyst for delivering the city’s wider growth and regeneration ambitions.”

ANGLER’S CORNER
with Clint Walker
I’ve been on a difficult water this week, a crystalclear gravel pit of over 40 acres, with depths in excess of 50 feet, and although I’ve fished it several times previously, I’ve yet to catch! I’ve been very close, having deposited 10 kilos of particles at the base of the marginal shelf, then dropping hook baits on it and watching carp (big ones too!) investigate, before drunken swimmers splashed through the swim to spook the fish! It’s a public park, and although owned entirely by Stoke-on-Trent Angling Society, it’s still an occupational hazard, but which is now being dealt with properly by police and committee, but on that occasion, I was positive I was going to get my first pick up…maybe this time, I could actually get a fish! I set up three rods. All three were baited with the newest of baits from Spotted Fin, the Smokey Jack range. On one rod, a method feeder was loaded with the groundbait, studded with mini-pellets, and baited with an 8mm wafter, the other two rods were armed with Smokey Jack boilies, and pulled through pva sticks. A 15mm wafter was accompanied by a stick of glugged boilies, the final rod had a similar bottom bait adorned with a gift of crushed boilies, pellet, and groundbait. All were cast out, back leaded, and I sat back to enjoy the beautiful surroundings… It really is a beautiful place to sit, and I noted several large fish crash out in front of me, a friend identified one as ‘The Purple Fish’, reputed to weigh around 30lb, and we chatted as I waited for a bite. On the hour, every hour, the method feeder was replenished, but aside from a couple of bleeps, I saw no action on all three rods all day, and nor did anyone else! It continues to perplex me! A whole day for two solitary bleeps… my next trip surely has to see more action? I’ll return to The Mere another day, but in the meantime, I wanted to break out the light lure gear to try and find something which would oblige! I use the Sonik Sports Magna range of rods for much of my lure fishing, and the dropshot rod can also be used to flick lighter lures across small rivers and canals, which I love. I twinned it with a 3000 series AVX reel, and set off to find a suitable swim.
I intended to spend little more than fifteen minutes in each area, switching between lure and dropshot, and I always enjoy a visit to the local canal, and especially the turning circle outside the boatyard. I arrived as the sun lifted over the horizon, and set to work dropping my tiny Rapture lure into likely holes. My first drop was met with the thumping strike of a small perch, as was my second and third. I’d obviously dropped straight into a swarm of small of small stripeys, and plundered a few before moving around, but could find no more, so time up, it was off to another venue… A different canal saw the lure disappear beneath a bridge into the shadows. My braid tightened as the lure sank, and the first perch from the swim was swung to hand. A couple of drops later, and a feisty pike hit the lure, sending the rod into a graceful curve before it too came to my waiting palm. More good fun, but after fifteen minutes, my time was up, and I headed off to a local stretch of small river… my favourite kind of fishing! As I walked up the path towards the swims I wanted to visit, I noted an angler sitting at the canal side which runs adjacent to the river. I enquired whether he was having any luck. He replied that he hadn’t, and he had been sat in the same spot for around six hours! We chatted for a few minutes before I moved off to find my next cast… The swim I love most has a fast run at the top, the water carving holes beneath the roots of overhanging trees, before tailing off into a deep pool, dappled by sunlight which just squeezes through the foliage above. A small lure fired out to the edge of the faster water, and allowed to drift down to the deeps before retrieving slowly, will usually entice a hit. The lure hit the spot perfectly, I tightened up, and started a leisurely recovery. Wham! A trout hit the lure and arched into the air in a shower of silvery spray! I love trout on lures, they hit hard and fight harder, but this one was soon subdued, photographed, and returned after I’d taken a few seconds to admire the bright dots and spots which adorned its flanks; a truly handsome fish of around a pound. A second cast resulted in an angry perch, a small fish of a few ounces, and two more quickly followed before I headed upstream to the final plot. The last swim of the session is a deep hole with undercut banks, which shallows up at the tail end, and offers deep water in the middle, and is often

packed with perch. The lure was flicked away, and left to settle, before I bought it back to the bank in a series of short hops. Nothing… I dropped it at my feet, and ‘jumped’ the small rubber bait around the margins hoping to lure the perch from beneath the undercut. Nothing… Flung downstream, the tempter was wound back along the margin, perhaps a trout or even a pike lay in wait? No, nothing… a real surprise if I’m truthful, I’d left this swim until last as I expected it to be the most fun! Fifteen minutes up, it was time to leave and I walked back to the other angler to see if things had improved. They hadn’t. He sat disconcertedly as he endured a final cast. I couldn’t resist a last effort, and swung the tiny lure out in front of me, just a few yards from where he sat. Wallop! It was hit on the drop by a perch, an immaculate fish of around half a pound. I did it again, and the lure was followed to my feet, before I halted it, and a second perch snapped up

the bait; two fish within seconds! I could feel my compatriot’s despair, so I nicked the hook into the retaining eye, and walked back towards him. He was packing up, biteless, fishless, and as he did so, he asked about my kit. We discussed the light set up, and the importance of being mobile to find fish, and I confirmed that in perhaps two hours of actual fishing, I’d caught at least twenty fish, a mix of perch, pike and trout, so he asked if he could try my set up. Guess what? First cast, he hit a perch, as he did on the second and third! In a few seconds, he had caught more than he had done all day whilst fishing maggots. Luck? Coincidence? Skill? Maybe a combination of all three, but it just proves that if you get things right, then you don’t need to be fishing for long periods to enjoy great fun… but then that’s what keeps us coming back isn’t it? I just need to find them on The Mere now! Tight lines…

The County Senior League started again this weekend after the summer break. The league once again welcomes a number of new teams for the 2018/19 season, but the first weekend saw only the participation of the Premier and First Division.

MCCANN PLEASED WITH SEASON START Grant McCann has praised his side’s start to the season which has seen them pick up six points from their opening three games Rovers were beaten 1-0 by Burton Albion at the Pirelli Stadium on Saturday, but McCann is confident they will bounce back as they enter a run of three straight home games starting with the visit of Shrewsbury Town on Tuesday night. “It has been a decent start for us , we’ve had four games and won three of those and it will be a good test of character now over the next three games,” he said. “Those games are all at home, two in the

We have a good group of players in the changing room and they are hurting about this result, like the fans will be and like I am, and we need to respond very quickly.” Rovers face Shrewsbury Town at the Keepmoat Stadium in Sky Bet League One on Tuesday night, and McCann is looking for his side to put the Burton game behind them with a positive result against John Askey’s men. “We have the opportunity to put this result behind us, we won’t dwell too much on it and we will go into that game and put it right,” he added. “The games are coming thick and fast now, with the Tuesday and Saturday schedule, so I have told the boys to go home and look after themselves over the weekend. We are a team that will always work hard and we want to get ourselves in the best possible position and, come January or February, I want us to be in a position to push on in the league.”

ECSTATIC GAFFER DELIGHTED EGAN WITH LASTWITH DESERVED WIN GASP WIN
The Blades boss was delighted with Billy Sharp’s last minute winner in front of the Kop. As was seen with his celebrations after Billy Sharp last-gasp winner, boss Chris Wilder was delighted to see his side overcome Norwich City at Bramall Lane. Wilder ran the length of the touchline after the skipper’s winning goal, but having composed himself and got his breath, he was of the opinion that his

He laughed: “It’s a brilliant feeling, you’ve got the enjoy it, I think I got halfway up the Kop at one stage and scared a few people! “A few people, including the wife looked at me like I’d lost the plot and it took me 30 minutes to calm down, but that’s what you are in football for, moments like that. “We’ve had a few of those occasions go

against us last season and it’s a dagger blow, even against Swansea we got caught late on we didn’t deserve it, but I thought we deserved that winner. “Norwich are a good side, it was great finish from Jordan Rhodes, but it was a disappointing goal for us and we were well on top at the time.” The manager added: “It was quiet in the changing room at half-time but we got into them and I said we’re level and very
“It is great, the club is great, the fan base is ridiculous and everyone is pulling in the right direction, I knew this was a big club but now I’ve seen it for myself.” Goalkeeper Henderson was involved in one of the biggest incidents in Saturday’s SkyBet Championship fixture against Norwich City.
much in the game. “Second-half the reaction was good, Norwich had the ball in areas where they could have and we got in areas where we thought we could hurt them and we did in the end. “We kept going, we got men in the box, Ollie’s delivery was excellent and we were positive in our play, it would have been harsh on us to draw that game, let alone lose it.”
He made an impressive one-onone save with the score locked at 1-1, despite a hint of offside. The number one added: “You have got to make the save, regardless, who knows what would have happened? I made the save and hopefully that helped us get a result.”
John Egan echoed the sentiments of boss Chris Wilder following Saturday’s ‘deserved’ victory over Norwich City at Bramall Lane. The Republic of Ireland international headed home early on, with goal line technology confirming his first goal for the Blades, but it was the last-gasp winner that Egan focused on. He remarked: “It was a fantastic end to the game, it was petering out to a draw, neither side looked like getting a winner, but it was a brilliant ball from Bash, Didsy (David McGoldrick) did brilliantly and Billy is the man that is always there. “I think it was a deserved win in the end, we were excellent for the first 25 minutes and could have had more goals to be fair, then they score with probably their only chance of the half. “We were creating the better chances and on another day we could have had three or four.” The defender was more than happy with his opener but was keen to praise United’s togetherness following a second consecutive victory in the Sky Bet Championship. Egan added: “In the second-half both teams went to try and win the game, we always go for it and it paid off in the end. “I’ve also managed to score a good few goals in my career, I should have one or two against Hull and with Ollie’s delivery, they are always on the money and I could have had a second too. “We’re playing well as a team, everyone is working hard for each other, we’re doing the dirty work too and we’re digging deep and doing things collectively. “We’ll need to rest the legs now and then focuses turn to Bolton from Monday onwards.”
DUTCH SUCCESS FOR BLADES U19S United already have a piece of silverware in the trophy cabinet this season. That comes following a Development squad’s recent trip to the Netherlands, where they won the SP Lochem U19 Tournament. United played two friendlies and four competitive fixtures whilst on tour and won every game. Having beaten Arminia Bielefeld

and FC Dordrecht in warm-up fixtures, the United youngsters overcame De Graafschap in their first group fixture, with Reon Potts and Jake Kelly on target. The Blades then overcame Crewe Alexandra, thanks to a goal from Sam Ackroyd, before beating hosts SP Lochem 2-1 in their final group fixture, with Ackroyd bagging a brace. That set up a final again against Willem II and Zak Brunt scored the only goal of the game, latching on to Kelly’s flick on, as United stood firm under heavy pressure to secure a deserved moment of glory as they lifted the trophy.

BEATEN BY A BETTER TEAM Jos Luhukay acceded to the fact that Wednesday were second best as Brentford ran out comfortable 2-0 winners at Griffin Park. Goals either side of the break from Neal Maupay and Ollie Watkins sealed the points for the Bees and but for an outstanding display
by Cameron Dawson in goal, the damage would have been greater. Luhukay said: “I have to give credit to Brentford because they are a good side and deserved to win this game. “They played some good football, created chances and we did not do well today. “It was not good for
us in attack and in defence and we must do such much better. “We now have three games at home and we must see a reaction from everyone and for everyone, not least the fans who travelled to Brentford today because they did not deserve to see what they did.”
TRANSFER EMBARGO MCCULLOCH PENS - CLUB STATEMENT OWLS CONTRACT Sheffield Wednesday are pleased to inform supporters that the current transfer embargo imposed by the EFL has been lifted with immediate effect. The club has worked diligently alongside
the EFL in a bid to ensure compliance with Profitability and Sustainability regulations. We would like to place on record our thanks to the EFL Executive for the support and
guidance given to Sheffield Wednesday surrounding this issue. We would also like to thank our loyal fans for their continued support as we move forward together on and off the pitch.
Young goalkeeper Cameron McCulloch has put pen to paper on a professional contract with the Owls. The shot-stopper joined Wednesday on trial in the summer and now signs with the club full time. McCulloch, who has enjoyed spells with Liverpool, Manchester City and Bury, was delighted to commit to the Owls.
The custodian said: “I’m very happy to sign for Sheffield Wednesday. “It’s an intense environment coming on trial at a professional football club, but you’ve got to grab it with both hands. “I’ve been welcomed into the group, they have been very cooperative with me. “For a big club like Sheffield Wednesday
