DON’T LOSE YOUR VOICE Local residents are being warned not to lose their voice on matters that affect them by completing their annual canvass form and returing it as soon as possible. Letters were issued to all households from the last week to gather information about everyone who lives there. With local elections taking place in Sheffield in May 2019, this is an important opportunity for residents to make sure they can take part and have their say. The form ensures that
Sheffield City Council can keep the electoral register up to date and identify any residents who are not registered so that they can be encouraged to do so. Registering will mean residents can take part in any future elections. John Mothersole, Chief Executive and returning officer at Sheffield City Council, said: “It’s important that residents respond as soon as possible so that we have the right details on the electoral register for every address in Sheffield. Sheffielders have a
strong voice and we want everyone to have their say, but if you’re not on the electoral register you won’t be able to vote. Please check your forms and respond as soon as you can. The easiest and quickest way to respond is online and full instructions will be provided in your letters.” Residents are being asked to check and respond to their forms quickly and encouraged to respond online as this is the easiest way for individuals and for the council to manage the
responses. Responding quickly will also prevent unnecessary reminder letters being issued. People who have moved address recently are particularly encouraged to keep an eye out for the form and check the details.
For more information about registering to vote visit www. sheffield.gov.uk/ sheffvotes or contact Sheffield City Council’s Electoral Services on 0114 2734093.

DEVELOPER SELECTED FOR FORGE ISLAND REGENERATION A development partner for Rotherham’s Forge Island has been named. Muse Developments has been chosen by Rotherham Council as its preferred partner for the regeneration of Forge Island. The successful proposal submitted by Muse Developments includes a cinema, food and drink outlets and a hotel. The leisure facilities
will be set within an attractive public space and will include a new pedestrian bridge connecting to the rest of the town centre. Rotherham Council’s Cabinet Member for Jobs and the Local Economy Cllr Denise Lelliott said: “We are extremely pleased with the outcome of the developer selection process and the very high quality proposals we received which reflect the
confidence investors have in the future direction and potential of Forge Island to become a quality development which will achieve lasting benefits for the local community.” The first phase of work will include the main Island and part of the Riverside precinct, incorporating the central hub hosting the cinema, hotel and restaurants, with an expected start date
of October 2019, and completion within two years. Muse Developments is one of the country’s leading names in mixed-use development and urban regeneration - a national developer with regional operations in Manchester, London, Leeds and Glasgow. The company has more than 30 years’ experience of delivering high quality

developments which bring real change to towns and cities. Muse Developments’ other projects include Wakefield’s Merchant Gate development, City Place in Chester, Liverpool’s St. Paul’s Square and Marischal Square in Aberdeen. Dan Needham, Development Director at Muse Developments, said: “We’re delighted to be given the opportunity to work with
Rotherham Council on the first phase of their ambitious regeneration of the town centre. “This is an exciting proposal for the regeneration of Forge Island, as we look to work collaboratively to create a vibrant new leisure quarter for Rotherham town centre, with a cinema, restaurants, hotel and car parking set in stunning new public areas the community
can enjoy. “The Forge Island programme will also maximise the benefits of the waterside location and extend the town’s cultural offer.” Further discussions will now take place with Muse Developments with contracts expected to be signed shortly. A planning application will also be submitted with a report to be taken to Rotherham
Council’s Cabinet and Commissioners’ Decision Making Meeting later in the year. Muse Developments will join Rotherham Council at the Rotherham Show at Clifton Park on the weekend of September 8th and 9th – residents and businesses are invited to visit the Transforming Rotherham marquee to view the plans and talk to the developers.

1281 29/08/2018 MP SUPPORTS YOUNG CARERS DEALING WITH TINNITUS After meeting with young carers from SYC’s Action Group (the local charity’s voice and influence group for young carers), MP for Sheffield Heeley Louise Haigh was very moved and wanted to take forward two of their key concerns: the high travel costs that young carers face due to all the extra appointments and caring tasks they have to do; and the limited chances they have to get a break and enjoy leisure time like other children their age. To respond to this, she launched a campaign for free travel for young carers, saying: “Young carers give up so much to help others, often from a very young age, and it’s only right they’re provided with some support in their own lives too. We have thousands of young carers in Sheffield and they’re all too often forgotten. Travel concessions for carers vary hugely across the country, and some councils work with transport authorities to give young carers a free travel pass, allowing them to get to and from school and their caring responsibilities without added financial worry – this is a scheme Sheffield should absolutely get behind.” Louise also worked with Councillor Mary Lea, to involve Sheffield City Council, Sheffield International Venues (SIV), Places for People and the South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive (SYPTE) to see how they could help. Recognising how hard school holidays can be for young carers,
SIV and Places for People put on brilliant activity days for young carers in June and have also kindly offered SYC members free swimming, tennis and ice skating during the six-week summer holidays, as well as discounted leisure access for a whole year. Councillor Mary Leasaid: “Young carers spend a lot of time supporting others and often suffer from financial hardship. It’s really important that we offer them some support to access sport and leisure provision in our city. Exercise is directly linked to our physical and mental wellbeing and our young carers need to look after themselves as well as those they care for.” Young carers from SYC are so happy that they have been listened to and plan to continue working in partnership with their local MPs and Sheffield City Council to bring about positive change for young carers, both here in Sheffield and all over the UK. As one young carer commented after meeting Louise Haigh MP: “It was amazing! It felt like she had known us for ages – she really listened.” To find out more about Sheffield Young Carers, or if you or someone you know is a young carer, please call 0114 258 4595 or visit www.sheffieldyoungcarers.org.uk to sign up for quarterly news updates. To sign Louise Haigh’s petition for free travel for young carers, please visit: www.louisehaigh.nationbuilder.com/ carerstravel
Almost everyone will have experienced a ringing in their ears after going to a loud concert or spending time in a noisy environment, but for people with tinnitus it is a persistent problem. Tinnitus is the perception of noises in the ear that sound as if they’re internal, rather than coming from an outside source. It may begin suddenly or come on gradually. For some it is an occasional annoyance, but some sufferers find it totally disrupts every aspect of their lives and can lead to mental health problems. What causes tinnitus? Audiologist Gordon Harrison said: ‘Despite the fact that it is a common condition, it’s still not clear exactly what causes tinnitus. It is thought to be a problem with the way that the ear hears sounds and the brain interprets them. The majority of the cases are linked to damage to the inner ear caused by hearing loss but around one in three people with the condition do not have a problem with their ears or hearing. As well as inner ear damage, other causes of hearing loss include a buildup of wax, a perforated ear drum, a middle ear infection or stress.’ Is there any treatment? There is no cure for tinnitus but there are a number of things you can do to try and cope with it. GCSE SUCCESS FOR SHEFFIELD STUDENTS Students across the city are celebrating their GCSE results last week. Provisional data indicate that 39.3% of young people achieved a strong pass (grade 5 or above) in English and maths. This is similar to 2017. In the individual subjects, there has been an increase in the percentage achieving a strong pass – English has improved from 54.6% to 55.4% and Maths has improved from 45.2% to 46.9%. The new grading system, introduced for English and Mathematics last year, has been used this year for 20 other subjects. Subjects are now graded

9 to 1 with 9 being the top grade replacing the A to G system. The exams regulator, Ofqual has described the new grade 4 as being similar to an old C grade and the new grade 7 equivalent to a grade A. At Newfield School, staff and students are ecstatic with the results which were led by Kitty Griffiths-Johnson who got eight Grade 9s and achieved an A* Distinction in further maths. “I’ve been so nervous so it’s really good,” she said after opening results, initially with some fear and trepidation. “I feel really happy. I’m going out with some friends this afternoon and then out for my tea with my parents to celebrate.” Kitty was in good company with other students who together contributed to the 46 grade 9s that were achieved by students at the school. Headteacher at Newfield Emma
Anderson said: “Our school has done fabulously well. I am delighted for and very proud of our students who have achieved some fantastic GCSE results this year. They have worked very hard and shown real commitment to their studies. Importantly, our students now have those foundations to move on to their chose post-16 routes. I would like to thank our staff and families for their relentless support and ambition for our students. I wish our students the very best for their next steps. Last year we were in the top two per cent nationally for the progress made by our students and we eagerly look forward to the 2018 results when this year’s national data is known.” Councillor Jayne Dunn, the council’s cabinet member for education and skills said: “Following last week’s A Level results I think it’s absolutely

fantastic to see so many young people also achieving great GCSE results. Our schools continue to improve on their performance each year. These excellent results mean that Sheffield’s young people are well placed to move on to an exciting future whether this be college, school or the world of work.” Stephen Betts of Learn Sheffield said: “We are so proud of the achievements of Sheffield’s young people and schools, who have so much to celebrate today. The provisional data suggest that Sheffield’s performance remains strong and we are especially pleased to see improved outcomes in English and mathematics. We will be able to fully understand the performance of the city when the national data is available but today is about celebrating the achievements of everyone involved.”

WIN TICKETS TO THE ST LEGER FESTIVAL The William Hill St Leger Festival at Doncaster Racecourse from 12th to the 15th of September is a heady mix of top quality racing and a fantastic social scene. And, with five pairs of Grandstand tickets available to all four days, you too could be part of the action. Visited by ardent racegoers and fashionistas alike, the
festival culminates on Saturday 15th September, Leger Day, when the world’s oldest classic, the William Hill St Leger race takes place. The race forms part of the British ‘Classics’ five carefully selected races renowned for their prestige and the horses they attract. First there is the 2000 and 1000 Guineas which start the season in Newmarket.
This is followed by the Derby and Oaks at Epsom in the summer with the Doncaster classic forming the final leg of the British ‘Triple Crown’. A saying, popular in racing circles states that; “The fastest horse wins the Guineas; the luckiest the Derby – and the best horse wins the St Leger.” The Festival kicks off with a bang on Wednesday 12th when
retired celebrities of the saddle dust off their breeches and return to action in the feature event competing in the charity race, a contest run on the straight mile. The Leger Legends race helps raise money for the Northern Racing College and Jack Berry House, a rehabilitation facility for injured jockeys. FAST-TRACK YOUR CAREER INTO THE HEALTHCARE PROFESSION … WORK AS A PHLEBOTOMIST!
Many people enter this profession when they are looking for a career change or a fresh start and they often have no previous qualifications or experience in healthcare. Phlebotomists can work part time (usually mornings) but also may choose to work full time as well as weekends, holidays and bank work. Blood samples are usually collected before mid-day and then analysed in your local hospital’s Path Lab in the afternoon. “We train people from all walks of life and all ages” explains Lauren, Geopace office manager. “We’ve had school leavers, shop assistants, receptionists, beauticians and dental nurses, as well as telesales staff, unemployed and the retired who are looking for a challenge. We also have referrals from JobCentres, who can sometimes fund your course in full” says Lauren. Once you are on the healthcare career ladder there are often opportunities to progress into other areas, such as working in the hospital path lab or other departments. Promotion is

ANGLER’S CORNER
with Clint Walker
There are a few things which get on my nerves a bit in the fishing ‘bubble’ but the one which really annoys is when anglers blatantly lie about their captures to appear ‘expert’. This week, I’ve caught someone out for the second time… Over the last nine years, writing weekly columns for Carp-Talk magazine, I’ve had to study thousands of images of fish. The vast majority were sent in by excited anglers, keen to see their captures in print, and full of detail, but odd ones required further investigation. As a result, I’m pretty good when it comes to spotting what’s hot, and what’s rot! It can be anything from old pictures sent in and claimed as ‘last week’, fish from ‘no publicity’ waters which the angler states are from somewhere else, turning fish around, then letting a mate grab a photograph so they can both claim a capture, and some will even go as far as photoshopping themselves onto someone else’s body to claim a fish! As I say, it is only odd narcissists who try to deceive, but I hate it all the same…it’s not fair on the magazine, it’s not fair on every other angler who may be duped… I’m far too professional to name the offending angler, but suffice to say that around eighteen months ago, I questioned him about the validity of a pike which he alleged to have caught from the River Dove. I was fairly confident it had in fact been landed from a reservoir, and the reason I was so confident is that going back through my own images, I realised I’d caught it as well, which confirmed my suspicions. It wasn’t just the surroundings which seemed familiar, but his response just didn’t hold water, nor did his confused account of the actual capture. At the time, I
thought little of it, after all a bit of secrecy goes a long way into keeping your fishing spots special, so I let it lie… This week though, he posted an image which purported to show a perch of considerable weight, which he claimed as a new personal best, and promptly proceeded to offer ‘expert’ advice to incredulous anglers who congratulated him on his success. I examined the image closely. Framed in black by the original smartphone used to take the shot, our ‘expert’s’ head was clearly outside the dark boundaries of the picture; a physical impossibility given the camera used. It was only beyond the black by a small amount, but enough to induce me to look closer. I also noted that despite outstretched arms, the dorsal fin of the perch was actually BEHIND his chin and reflected in his sunglasses was the clear image of a kayak; unusual in that the image looked as though it was taken by the side on a canal on the towpath! His face also appeared to be a completely different colour and clarity to the neck and hands, which led me to conclude that he had actually photoshopped his head onto someone else to claim credit for a mighty fish! I question him via private message… His response was to confirm that he had definitely caught the fish, “Defo real mate” and that it had indeed come from the River Trent. I enquired whether he could explain why his head was outside the frame, or why the dorsal fin was behind his chin? “What ya trying to say cheeky? I got special permission off a farmer to fish a spot”. I replied that I thought his deception had been busted, and that he was being duplicitous before finding that on Facebook, on his triumphant post, someone had been less than tactful; “No way, photoshopped mate, you’re full of…” This comment spawned forth an invective of expletives from the captor angry at

being doubted, and the removal of the post immediately. Busted? You bet. I found the original image online nestled away in a popular perch group, clearly showing the proper captor, so lifted it… I asked him once again to confirm he had caught the fish, which he did, moaning again that he had been suspected of deceit; “Definitely your capture? Not a wind up?” He replied once more in the affirmative before asking why I and others had such an issue with the image. I couldn’t help it…. I posted him the original image via private message, clearly proving that he had tried to gain notoriety and ‘respect’ by lying and asked him to explain it… he went quiet… Sadly, I can’t send him any more private

messages, I’m blocked by him now for some reason, as is the chap who publicly outed him on social media. I wonder why? There is a message there for all; if you try to get away with a ‘fisherman’s tale’ with the intent of gaining admiration from genuine anglers, then the chances are that your duplicity will be discovered, and you will be shamed publicly for your actions. In a world where ‘sponsorship’ and integrity are king, you will have none, and no-one will ever believe you again, so is it really worth it? We all like to receive praise from our fellows, and enjoy showing off our endeavours, but to some, it seems it will never be enough to use their own merit, so they have to invent it… very sad…

WARNE HAILS EXCELLENT TEAM PERFORMANCE
Rotherham United boss Paul Warne hailed an excellent team performance as his side recorded a Sunday Sky Bet Championship 1-0 win over Millwall at AESSEAL New York Stadium. The Millers manager praised his players for a good all-round showing as Sean Raggett’s first half header guided them to a precious home win over Neil Harris’ Lions. Speaking after the game, Warne admitted that he was unable to single out any one player for praise in the post-match debrief in the dressing room debrief, with everyone impressing in the bank holiday weekend showdown. “We reiterated to the lads after the game that they’ve all played a massive part in the win,” he explained. “They all tackled, ran back, headed and put their bodies on the line and I thought it was a very Rotherham-esque performance. “There were some outstanding performances and I don’t really like to pick any one of them out. I was really pleased throughout.
“I think it was two really fit sides but there was a lot of effort. “We ask a lot of our team obviously. I thought Smithy covered a lot of distance and I thought Willo looked back to his best today. I think it was the best performance we’ve seen from Will Vaulks and he looked a lot more comfortable. We’re pleased with Sean getting a goal and Woody is playing really well. Marek was pretty formidable between the sticks, so considering I didn’t want to mention anyone, I’ve done quite well there.” Following defeat in midweek to Hull City, Warne conceded that he was conscious to ensure his side didn’t suffer the same fate on Sunday and was delighted to add three points to their second tier tally on Sunday. “I’m really pleased. After the game in midweek it was disappointing to lose at home and we didn’t want to lose back-to-back games here,” he added. “We didn’t want the fans to lose belief in what we’re trying to do here and belief in our great team, so we’re really pleased win. “It was against a really good team who finished 8th last year and strengthened again in the window. “I knew it was going to be a tough game and I went to watch them against Sheffield Wednesday and I thought they were unlucky not to come anyway with something.”
Speaking in the aftermath of the Millers’ odd goal victory over Millwall, close season recruit Kyle Vassell concedes that his side’s home form will be the key to realising their Championship dreams. Paul Warne’s side earned their second league victory of the season, at the expense of the Londoners, thanks to Sean Raggett’s first-half header in wet and windy conditions at the AESSEAL New York Stadium. With the Millers showing great resolve to weather a late rally from the visitors, Warne’s men made it six points out of nine on their home turf, despite remaining pointless on the road. Speaking exclusively to www.themillers.co.uk, Vassell readily admits that the Millers will be looking to pick up the majority of their points on their home patch, by doing their utmost to make their relatively new home a daunting proposition for Championship opponents.
goal, so there was no way I was going to let anyone score, and luckily I only had to hold on to one. “I felt comfortable having to go in goal, it’s not really something I’ve done before, but I didn’t have any thoughts about doing it, I just wanted to help the boys out, and we’ve been unlucky not to get anything at the end.” Rovers were unlucky throughout the 90 minutes not to score against Pompey, who prior to this weekend hadn’t dropped points in Sky Bet League One, but Whiteman feels Rovers will learn from the weekend’s draw and build on it when they face Blackpool in the Carabao Cup on Tuesday night. “We couldn’t take our chances in the final third, in the context of the game we probably dominated it throughout, but after everything that happened late on, we’re pleased to get a point out of it,” he added. “We’re a very confident group, we went into the game confident that we could go out and win it and I think that showed really, we were brilliant throughout, and even with 10-men we were the better side. “We’ve got another game on Tuesday now to get that win we’ve been looking for, Blackpool will be another test for us, they’ve got some experienced players in their side, but we’re focused on the next game all ready and we will be right up for it again.
MCCANN: WE DESERVED MORE
“It was a great three points and it is very important for us,” Vassell stressed. “The home form is going to be massive for us. As long as we do well at home, we should be fine.” Following a number of impressive substitute cameos, Vassell was handed just his second league start of the season against the Lions, by being asked to ply his trade in one of the wide areas in support of lone frontman Michael Smith. Vassell stuck to his task gamely, both in the attacking and unfamiliar defensive areas of the pitch, which led to the ex-Blackpool and Peterborough United striker being given a generous hand by the home faithful, as he was replaced in the dying minutes of the game by Joe Newell. “I’m buzzing about it,” Vassell enthused. “We played pretty similar to them so it was even more important that we won today. It was always going to be a tight game so it’s great to have won the game. “Two goals are always better than one but fair play to the boys at the back. They were strong and resolute so one goal was enough in the end.”

WHITEMAN ALL ABOUT THE TEAM Ben Whiteman says there was no doubt in his mind he would step up to go in goal during Saturday’s goalless draw with Portsmouth. Whiteman was forced to take Marko Marosi’s place between the sticks following the Slovakian’s dismissal 10 minutes from time, but the midfielder says he was happy to take one for the team and don the gloves. “Hopefully I’ll not have to do that again, but it’s just one of those things that happen in football, Marko’s saved us the game really beforehand, but sometimes you have to take one for the team and obviously I’m delighted to get the clean sheet,” he said. “It was a role reversal from last year really when they had the same happen to them, I had a chance to score in that one too when they had another player in

Manager Grant McCann felt his side were unlucky not to turn one point into three after Saturday’s goalless draw with Portsmouth in Sky Bet League One. Pompey had won all four of their league games prior to their visit to the Keepmoat Stadium, and McCann says the point was not a true reflection of their performance against one of the division’s early pace-setters. “We were the best team on the pitch by a mile, we’ve had some great chances to score but we just haven’t taken them, we’re not worried though because we have a great group of players who will score a lot of goals,” he said. “It’s saying something when you come away from the game feeling like it’s two points dropped against a team that have won all four games before this, we
feel like we dominated the game and controlled it for large parts. “I’ve got a really good group here, I’m really pleased with how they’ve played against one of the league’s top sides, we’re just disappointed we couldn’t get it over the line for the fans today, they were brilliant, and we just wish would could have won three points for them.” Late drama in the game saw Ben Whiteman take the gloves of Marko Marosi with 10 minutes of the affair remaining, as the Rovers keeper was dismissed for handling outside of the area, but McCann was full of praise for his make-shift goalkeeper. “You can never really prepare for something like that, I think it’s just whoever fancied it on the day really, we wouldn’t have wanted one of the centre halves to have gone in because that might have left us exposed but credit must go to Ben for stepping up,” he added. “They tried to get balls forward towards the end of the game, but the back four and Ben dealt with it brilliantly, they saw the game out well and credit must go to everybody that was out there. “He wanted to do it for the team, respect goes to him for going in goal, and in a way it let us have John Marquis still up the pitch and we were still able to cause them problems late on, I think that reflects brilliantly on my side.”

MOVING FORWARD NICELY, SAYS BOSS
The Blades boss was delighted with the three goals and three points from Bolton. Chris Wilder heaped praise on his players following Saturday’s impressive victory at Bolton. Reflecting on the 3-0 win at the University of Bolton Stadium, courtesy of goals from Mark Duffy, Kieron Freeman and John Fleck, the Gaffer commented: “We’re moving forward nicely.
BOLTON 0-3 BLADES REPORT The Blades were dominant in picking up three points against old foes Bolton Wanderers. Mark Duffy set the tone with a goal on five minutes and further strikes from Kieron Freeman and John Fleck sealed the points. Wilder’s team showed one change with Duffy, available again after illness, taking his place in the starting line-up. Woodburn dropped to the bench. It proved to be a good move as United made a blistering start. It took less than 30 seconds for the Blades to create a chance. After linking up with Sharp, a right-foot effort from Stevens was blocked by Wheater. From the resulting corner, a short Norwood pass found the run of Fleck but Alnwick pushed the midfielder’s shot onto the crossbar. Referee Madley checked
“We’ve come here before so knew what to expect, it happened at times, so it was really important we started on the front foot and got the first goal. “We should have scored after two minutes, then again a minute later, but to score early and then double it up midway through the half gave them a big problem and it was a good afternoon for us. “The attitude of the
his technology but this week the Blades players’ appeals were not rewarded. The opening goal, though, arrived on five minutes. Bolton had a corner that amounted to nothing but United’s start was deservedly rewarded. All that was left was for DUFFY to slide the ball into the bottom corner from Basham’s lay-off after the home side failed to clear Fleck’s crossfield pass to Freeman. Basham was back on defensive duty to prevent Wheater or Magennis getting on the end of Ameobi’s cross and Buckley’s fall in the box did not convince the referee as Bolton looked to get on level terms. Clarke’s intelligent ball through the defence almost put Sharp in but Olkowski cleared at the expense of a corner, from which Basham fired wide. The away side was clearly on top and a second goal followed on 22 minutes, in bizarre circumstances. Clarke laid off to FREEMAN, whose low, precise side-

team was excellent, when you come here, you have to run around and compete, drop on first and second balls and then that allows you to play.” Wilder added: “We play our way, they play theirs, but we had to make sure we dropped on the second balls and we did, we’ve scored a couple of great goals and their goalkeeper has made an unbelievable save from Flecky.
foot cross crept in via the back post after Clarke continued his run to put off Alnwick and his defenders. Fleck got the better of Lowe and attempted an audacious chip which looked to have beaten Alnwick but the ball landed on the roof of the net. Late in the half Bolton forced United back but the best of their setpieces saw Wheater’s effort kicked off the line by Clarke in a crowded penalty area. McGoldrick replaced Clarke at the break and was close to making an instant impression but goalkeeper Alnwick back pedalled to tip over the substitute’s long-range effort. Scorer Freeman was heavily involved in the second half. He opted to pull back to Sharp instead of shooting and the skipper’s effort was blocked; then Freeman half-volleyed wide after Norwood won possession deep in Bolton’s half. In a rare Bolton attack, Magennis headed wide a Wildschut cross and
“It was a game we knew we’d have to turn up for, we have and we’ve got our rewards. “We’ve got several good players who want to work hard and run around and they gel quickly, Ollie is certainly one of those. “I’m delighted with the win but also the first clean sheet of the season, the boys wanted to defend and put their bodies on the line and Deano didn’t have much to save.”
Stearman was added to the defence as an insurance policy. However, the Blades were still in control and a great turn by Basham almost got him a goal against his former club but Alnwick parried away. On 73 minutes, though, a Blades third goal finally ended any Bolton hopes of mounting a fight-back. Once again, the visitors committed players forward and from a low Stevens cross, FLECK turned the ball home at the near post. There were opportunities for further goals. A ball over the top found Sharp, who shot wide; whilst Freeman found himself clear on the right but his effort was deflected away for a corner. Woodburn was introduced late on and Bolton attempted a number of long-range efforts - twice Ameobi failed to find the target before the referee’s final whistle gave the green light for the players and 1,978 Blades fans inside the stadium to celebrate.
BLADES TO COMPETE IN PREMIER LEAGUE CUP United’s U23s will once again compete in the Premier League Cup and the draw has been made for the group stages of the competition. The Blades have been drawn in Group B alongside Everton, Blackburn Rovers and Doncaster Rovers. The draw consists of eight four-team groups, with each side playing the others home and away. The top two from each group progress to the last 16. All knockout ties are one-off matches to be decided by extra-time, if level after 90 minutes, and then penalties. Premier League 2 teams from Category One Academies are joined by teams from Categories Two, Three and Four in the competition. Dates for the aforementioned fixtures will be announced in due course.
CALLUPS FOR IRISH DUO Blades defensive duo John Egan and Enda Stevens are in the latest provisional Republic of Ireland squad. They have been called up by Martin O’Neill for UEFA Nations League fixtures against Wales and Poland.
It is Egan’s first call up as a Blade, whilst Stevens is hoping to build on his summer appearances. The Ireland squad will report into camp on Sunday 2nd September before travelling to Cardiff on Tuesday 4th September for the game against Wales. The squad will then travel on to Poland ahead of the game on Tuesday 11th September. An updated squad will be announced on Monday 3rd September ahead of training at the FAI National Training Centre.

HARD WORK SAW US THROUGH Hard work won the day, said Jos Luhukay after the Owls beat Ipswich 2-1 at Hillsborough on Saturday. Wednesday were not at their best but their graft and guile saw them over the line against the ten-man Tractor Boys. Luhukay said: “We showed the passion side of our game
today and the work ethic that I think helped us win the game. “We did not play that well with the ball but when you have the effort we did, that is a good compensation. “It is ideal to play win and work hard but when the games come so quickly this is not always possible. “So I am very happy
with the result and two home wins in just a few days. “Last year we lost this similar kind of game against Ipswich and today we won the points.” Luhukay was full of praise for Lucas Joao, whose brace sealed the win for Wednesday: “Lucas showed his qualities, he can make
a big difference in games. He has a lot of ability that can be very important in turning games. “This is why we are pleased Lucas has extended his contract and we are very happy to have him here. “Now he has to continue to grow as a player and develop because he has so much potential.”
QUALITY COMING THROUGH - BAKER Owls full back Ash Baker says is happy to see the young players breaking through into the first team this season. Baker made his first start for Wednesday on the last home game of 2017/18 and has been joined by a host of young talent making their
debuts this campaign, something he is pleased to see. The Welshman said: “It’s important for the players to see a pathway into the first team. “We, the Under-23s, won the league two seasons ago and came second last year, so we know we
have quality coming through. “The manager trusts us to come into the team, you can see that with the number of younger players who have made debuts already this season. “The likes of Matt Penney have come in and done well.” Wednesday face

After defeat to Brentford last weekend the Owls now have back to back wins, and Joao feels the quick succession of games has helped to put things right. He added: “In the Championship there are a lot of games in short times and it can change everything.”
