RACING LEGENDS READY TO RAISE MONEY FOR CHARITY ON OPENING DAY OF THE ST LEGER FESTIVAL Six newcomers, two ever-presents and a rider defending an unbeaten record are among the 16 jockeys limbering up to take part in the Leger Legends charity race, the one-mile feature event on the opening day of the William Hill St Leger Festival at Doncaster on 12th September. First staged in 2010, this unique event for ex-professional jockeys raises funds for the Injured

Jockeys Fund and Northern Racing College, and this year stands on the brink of breaking through the £1 million mark for the total amount raised. Heading the list of those appearing in the race for the first time are Ted Durcan, winner of the St Leger at Doncaster in 2009, Timmy Murphy, whose record includes wins in the Aintree, Irish and Scottish Grand Nationals, and Andrew Thornton,

who brought up a career tally of 1,007 wins on his last day in the saddle in June. The other newcomers are former champion amateur rider and apprentice Amy Ryan, Willy TwistonDavies, who won the famous Fox Hunters’ Chase over the Grand National fences at the age of 16, and exjump jockey Barry Keniry. Leger Legends committee members Gay Kelleway and Dale Gibson are back to continue their full

house of rides in the race. Dale, who now works for the Professional Jockeys Association, is one of two previous winners in the field, after his success on Bob in 2014, while Newmarket-based trainer Gay, still the only female jockey to have a Royal Ascot victory to her name, was pipped on the post in 2013. Former jump jockey Brian Harding returns with a perfect record, after winning on Off Art for

Yorkshire trainer Tim Easterby on his first ride in the race 12 months ago. The rest of the lineup – Ian Mongan, Luke Harvey, Ollie Pears, Gary Bardwell, Adrian Nicholls, Tony Culhane and Jamie Mackay – are seeking their first wins. Previous winners including riding legends Julie Krone, Mick Kinane, Sir Anthony McCoy and Joseph O’Brien. Funds raised over the past eight years

have helped to improve facilities at the Northern Racing College near Doncaster, and have been allocated to the IJF’s Jack Berry House in Malton.

LORD MAYOR OF SHEFFIELD TO JOIN NEW TEAM AT BBC RADIO SHEFFIELD Magid Magid, the Lord Mayor of Sheffield, is joining a new group of guest presenters for a new evening show on BBC Radio Sheffield. The Monday Night Social is a show which features communities, culture and conversation and Magid will be one of a series of new radio presenters to host the programme. He will present his first show on Monday September 10th at 7pm. Other presenters on the Monday Night Social include Howard Middleton who appeared on the Great British Bake Off in 2013, drag artist Luke Hague, who is also

known as Vivian Twist and former editor of The Mercury Andrew Platts. The Monday Night Social is one of a diverse and exciting series of weekday evening shows to have launched on BBC Radio Sheffield over the summer. The shows feature a host of new talent including Sheffield’s Sam Cleasby who is known as the poo lady following her battle with ulcerative colitis; and young presenters Ellie Colton and Joel Mitchell. Magid Magid, Lord Mayor of Sheffield, said: “I can’t wait to present my first show on BBC

Radio Sheffield and the new format is a great way to meet different characters from our communities, understand our differences and celebrate what we have in common as well. I’m really impressed by the work the station is doing to make their programmes more inclusive and more creative. It’s brilliant to be part of their team in such a special year for me.” Katrina Bunker, Editor of BBC Radio Sheffield, said: “We’re really excited about our new evening shows and we’ve worked hard to make sure we’re reaching out

/THEMERCURYNEWSPAPER

to new audiences and hearing new stories and new characters we don’t currently hear in our daytime shows. Some of the ideas for our new programmes came directly from the local community , so I really hope people will enjoy the new voices and new ideas they hear. “I’m really proud to be developing new radio talent from our region and putting some new voices on the air, I think there’s some real talent for the future in our new line up. Our listeners will know Magid Magid who has taken the city of Sheffield by storm since becoming

Lord Mayor and he will be a fantastic addition as one of the rotating cast of guest presenters on the Monday Night social; Greg’s knowledge and passion for music shines through on Tuesdays; people are going to love the honesty and humour of Sam and Liesje on Wednesdays; while Ellie and Joel are definitely ones to watch for the future with their new Friday show.” All the new shows will replace the Local Radio evening show which is due to come off air in the Autumn. Listeners can tune in to BBC Radio Sheffield on 88.6FM, 104.1FM, DAB, Freeview 734 and www. bbc.co.uk/radiosheffield

THIS WEEK In the News

Got my car waxed earlier. Still not sure how it keeps getting that hairy. The punchline comes before the question. What’s the worst part about time travelling jokes? What do we want? Low flying aeroplane noises! When do we want them? NNEEEEOOOOWWWWW I once knew a guy named Kelvin... He was an absolute unit. I need to re-home a dog. It’s a small terrier, and tends to bark a lot. If you’re interested, let me know and I’ll jump over next door’s fence and get it for you. My internet was down yesterday so I chatted to my wife for a change. I was surprised to learn that she didn’t work for Woolworths anymore. I think it’s a great idea to wear two different deodorants, one under each armpit. But that’s just my two scents. My wife and I decided to not have children. The kids are pretty upset. What type of blood do you give a pessimistic person? B positive.

ATTRACTIONS

The stars suggest you go easy this week, as a spiky energy between Mars and Uranus comes to a head early on. It can see you acting on impulse, which might add to any current difficulties. Thoughtfulness and patience can be more helpful Aries. Call for more news and astral advice...

It may be best to avoid rushing into a relationship, whether romantic or otherwise. The big news Libra, is that the Sun and Mercury enter your sign this weekend, which can see you back in the driving seat, and physical and mental drive rise. Call now for more news and astral advice...

It may be better to try to work with others than resist their suggestions, particularly if this relates to someone in authority. Adopting a rebellious tone over coming days might be a cause of regret later. It is far better to try to liaise with them to find unique solutions if you can. Call for more news...

Family plans could be disrupted, and this could mean rearranging something for another time. If you’re patient and flexible, it can all come together though. From the weekend, you enter a phase when the cosmos encourages you to make time for quiet reflection. Call for more astral advice...

Restless energies can see you ready to escape the daily grind, perhaps by going on an impromptu trip or vacation. This edgy energy can also influence thoughts and feelings, making it difficult to focus. Daily exercise and physical work can ground you though Gemini. Call for more astral advice...

You might find yourself involved in a stand-off which could be difficult to resolve Archer, especially if neither of you are willing to compromise. Try not to resort to hasty action though, as this might only make things worse. On a lighter note, your social sector looks a lot more perky. Call for more...

Money matters may need special care, as it can be tempting to fritter cash away on impulse buys that you could regret. If you should feel that urge to splurge, then hold back, as it may be enough to stop you. The week ahead can see you catching up on admin and be busy with paperwork. Call for more...

You may be tempted by an item that seems to call out to you, and feel an irresistible urge to purchase it there and then. Give yourself time to research other options, as there may be something better to be found. You could find yourself in the spotlight in a positive sense from the weekend. Call for more...

There could be a clash of opinions this week, and the way you handle this can either help or hinder you Leo. If you can wait a few days until emotions calm down, it might be possible to resolve this by compromising. Overreacting is certainly something to avoid. Call for more news and advice...

If you’ve been frustrated by aspects of your domestic situation, you may be keen to break free of restrictions. Don’t be too hasty though. If you can introduce changes gradually, this may be preferable. If life has been intense lately, then things may seem lighter from the weekend. Call for more...

If you are the kind of Virgo who likes to get things done on time, this might prove more challenging over the days ahead. Expect the unexpected, as disruption to your plans is very possible. At the same time, there is still a chance to take advantage of opportunities that may be perfect for you. Call for more...

A tense blend of energies could see you confiding in someone, when it could all come out in a rush. Whether you have shared this with the right person or not, getting it out in the open could be a real relief, and leave you feeling much better for letting the whole thing go. Call for more news...

TIME FOR FESTIVAL OF THE MIND 2018 WALKING FOOTBALL Festival of the Mind organized by the University of Sheffield is a unique collaboration between academics and experts from Sheffield’s cultural and creative industries. It is about welcoming the public and our students from all over the world – as we celebrate our University and our city, with themes that are both local and global. The third Festival of the Mind, held in 2016, attracted 50,000 visitors to its performances, talks, exhibitions, virtual reality experiences and interactive events. The University of Sheffield’s fourth Festival of the Mind combines world-class research with the creative talent of the city. Together they have produced an array of free events, open to all, to engage, entertain. As the festival evolves, our programme of national and regional partnerships grows ever stronger, and this year includes collaborations with Off the Shelf, BBC Music Day, Making Ways and Museums Sheffield. One of the highlights of this year’s Festival of the Mind is the Sheffield Castle project – a key example of our collaborative approach. The project brings together the Department of Archaeology, Sheffield School of Architecture and Friends of Sheffield Castle and is set to deliver a fantastic array of activities. The people of Sheffield make this festival dynamic, friendly and interactive, and we look forward to welcoming you all to the beautiful Speigeltent and our other venues across the city, this September. Festival of the Mind’s global themes reflect the values of the University’s and show our support for international students and to ensure that their contribution to our economy and culture is recognised.

These are just a few examples of events taking place across the city Valued Imaginations What encounters with artistic imagination do the people of Sheffield feel have the greatest impact on their wellbeing? An interactive exhibit, in which a soap opera, a comic book, a pop song and a montage of the local street art will be displayed for people to sit and enjoy. Visitors will be able to vote for the artistic experience that gives them the greatest sense of wellbeing. Open to everyone, just drop in. At Age UK Sheffield our vision is for a city in which no older person lives in poverty or loneliness. We know that as many as 12,000 Sheffielders are always or often lonely and we aim to change this. The Campaign began in 2003 when people of all ages knitted little wooly hats for Innocent smoothies. For each smoothie sold a donation of 25p is made to Age UK Sheffield. This money will help to fund local activities and the important work that Age UK Sheffield does every day in our communities. Every hat is important whether it is one or a hundred and one. Are you part of a knitting group? Are you able to spread the word and ask anybody else to take part in The Big Knit with us? Patterns can be found on our website www.thebigknit.co.uk/hats-amazing tand we will help you in any way we can. Any support will be enormously appreciated. Thank you for your time. If you feel you can help out or would like further information do call me. Virginia Lowes, Age UK Sheffield Tel: 0114 250 2850

WITH DRINK WISE AGE WELL!

Do you remember having a kick about in the park? Maybe you played Sunday league? Is it a while since you made a killer pass, a tackle or scored a goal? Perhaps you had the experience of starting out up front, before dropping back into midfield as the pace went, then back into defence when the waistline expanded, and then going in goal when running wasn’t an option. And then it was a case of being “left back in the stands”! Familiar? When you first hear about walking football it’s easy to be sceptical. Maybe it’s been a long time since you kicked a ball in anger. How can it be any fun at walking pace? Underneath it all there may be lurking fears about looking daft, not being any good, or being way past it fitness wise. You needn’t worry about any of the above. The good news is that walking football is just as much fun as any kind of football ever was. Whether you are making a defence splitting pass or making a fool of yourself the atmosphere is friendly and encouraging, and a good shot, save or tackle is just as satisfying as it ever was. So maybe it all happens more slowly, but it’s all relative. Everyone is walking (the ref will blow if they spot any running) so it’s about using your head as much as your feet, and getting yourself into a good position with a little anticipation. Much more importantly, it’s a great way of getting fit without the drudgery of a treadmill or staring at the screen from an exercise bike. Before you know it, you will have moved more than you have done in a long while, and it’s been fun all the way. It’s also a great way to make some new friends. Everybody knows it is an unexpected chance to get back into playing, and so the atmosphere is supportive. Everyone is part of the team regardless of which side they are on. Everyone taking part has something in The World’s Biggest Coffee Morning on common for a kick off. Regardless of who they support! Friday 28th September is Macmillan’s So why not give it a try? An increasing demand for skilled healthcare professionals has led to a shortage of allied healthcare workers, especially phlebotomists - the skilled healthcare professionals who take your blood. Demand is at an all-time high with hospitals, clinics and GP Surgeries offering a golden opportunity for that “longed for” career change! If you have good people skills and manual dexterity, and like the idea of working in a busy healthcare environment, a phlebotomist job may be just the job for you! Many people enter this profession when they are looking for a career change or a fresh start and they often have no previous qualifications or experience in healthcare. Phlebotomists can work part time (usually mornings) but also may choose to work full time as well as weekends, holidays and bank work. Blood samples are usually collected before mid-day and then analysed in your local hospital’s Path Lab in the afternoon. “We train people from all walks of life and all ages” explains Lauren, Geopace office manager. “We’ve had school leavers, shop assistants, receptionists, beauticians and dental nurses, as well as telesales staff, unemployed and the retired who are looking for a challenge. We also have referrals from JobCentres, who can sometimes fund your course in full” says Lauren. Once you are on the healthcare career ladder there are often opportunities to progress into other areas, such as working in the hospital path lab or other departments. Promotion is much easier once you are “on the ladder” and have some experience behind you. Many Geopace students are now working as phlebotomists throughout the UK and a few have even chosen to work abroad where there is often a similar shortage and growing demand for this specialised skill. An interesting booklet featuring student’s “Success Stories” is written by the student’s themselves and looks at how they have made the move from wide and varied backgrounds to find themselves now working as phlebotomists. A copy can be downloaded from the Geopace website’s testimonials page. If you like the idea of a challenging career in healthcare and particularly in phlebotomy then this may be the perfect move for you! The comprehensive training course last a full two days and culminates in the award of a nationally recognised and accredited certificate. “We practice taking blood from artificial arms”, says Lauren “and everyone on our course has a lot of fun! We get a great deal of satisfaction later on when we hear from our students that they are working for their local GP surgery or in their local hospital.” If you would like to know more about phlebotomy as a career or to book a place on the course visit Geopace Training’s website at www.geopace.com

the city, Amey have tried to keep disruption to an absolute minimum whilst this huge piece of work was undertaken. “With Meadowhall, Centertainment and Ikea all in the vicinity, considerations around peakshopping times and rush hour traffic had to be taken into account to ensure the work was completed as smoothly as possible. “Now this part of the work is finished, people can start to enjoy the benefits of the brand new surfacing and continue with their journeys safely both in and out of the city.” Resurfacing work in Carbrook and Attercliffe was carried out in stages to minimise disruption for local residents and businesses and road diversions were in place to ensure people could still reach their destination. As well as the resurfacing, improvements were made to the green space at Tinsley Roundabout last year, when the area was cleared of unsightly vegetation and tidied up. Streets Ahead Network Account Manager Nick Hetherington said: “Completion of these roads in the city is a major milestone as it is such a busy route used by residents, business and visitors to Sheffield. We continue to work hard on behalf of the city, resurfacing major arterial routes as well as inner city roads upgrading the road network and maintaining it for years to come.” Over the first five years, 727 miles of roads – some 65% of the Sheffield network- have been given a new lease of life as part of the Streets Ahead programme. Extensive resurfacing will continue in future years to ensure that the road network remains in good condition for all users.

It’s taken months of detailed planning and careful collaborative working, but now drivers in Sheffield are starting to reap the benefits of a £3m scheme which has seen some of the city’s busiest roads resurfaced. Sheffield City Council’s highways contractor, Amey, is close to completing improvement works on a seven-mile stretch of road from Tinsley into the city centre, as part of the Streets Ahead programme. A number of the city’s main routes stretching from the Rotherham border at Tinsley, past the M1 and Meadowhall and into the city centre have been resurfaced since May. The major scheme has been rolled out smoothly in co-ordination with Highways England before the Government agency begins scheduled work on Tinsley Viaduct. It is the latest significant stage of the Council’s £2.2bn Streets Ahead contract with Amey, which continues to improve the roads and street scene both in residential areas as well as on main routes across the city. Cabinet member for environment and street scene at Sheffield City Council, Councillor Lewis Dagnall said: “Work to improve the roads around Tinsley and into the city centre has taken meticulous planning from all parties and the impact on road users during these works has remained paramount To find out more about the Streets Ahead to the work schedule. programme visit: www.sheffield.gov.uk/ “Being one of the busiest access routes into streetsahead

I found about 3’ of water, shallowing off Instead, I end up taking everything quickly little more than a couple of rod lengths (including the kitchen sink) loading the from the bank, and a pronounced hole where barrow until my back can’t take any more, boatowners obviously gunned their engine to and trudging off across the fields to set up swing the boats around before retracing their photography shots for social media clients, steps. The extra power had stirred a clearly sponsors or whatever, so this week, I went defined depression, so I was keen to target a back to my childhood in an attempt to find definite feature as canals can often be devoid some joy again, to try and remind myself of anything to attract fish in certain areas! I exactly why I go fishing… plumbed up an inch or so over depth and added I picked up a small two wheel trolley recently, a number 8 shot to drag the bottom and keep after spotting it going cheap (free in fact) and the float still; otherwise, it was dotted down to was determined to thin out my tackle to fit. show less than an inch of bright red tip. With everything secure, I locked sliding away. Surprised by the speed of the van, crossed the busy road, and walked off response, I missed it, so dropped the float across the meadow to the local canal. I usually back in and watched as it failed to settle. I take a lure rod and bag of lure kit when I hit deduced that the maggots had been taken on the cut, but for the first time in many a year, I the drop and was pleased to feel a small fish wanted to fish it properly, with maggots and hooked when I lifted the rod. A plump silvery everything! roach of a few ounces was the result, and I The trolley made navigating the meadow was pleased with that! After an hour, during easy, and within a few minutes, I’d arrived at which I’d continually flicked in odd maggots my destination, a boat turning area, to find I and yet more groundbait, a trio of boats had was the only angler in sight; perfect. Quickly added colour to the swim and I’d picked off a spying a grassed area off the towpath, and steady number of fish as the float repeatedly slipped under. hours, my total bag stood at around fifteen pounds, maybe more, and I then started to pick up perch, obviously attracted by prey fish in the swim. I had noted perch striking at fish elsewhere in the swim but had only caught tiny sergeants before the first of a better stamp of fish appeared. I spent three hours at the bank side, sharing it with a swimming grass snake, a constantly darting kingfisher, and a gaggle of elderly walkers who wanted to watch for a while, and do you know what? I thoroughly enjoyed it! A short session haul of perhaps 25lb from any canal is not to be sniffed at, and I was very surprised to find out that plenty of the fish were of some quality too, and it helped me see that fishing IS about fun, not Facebook ‘likes’ or constantly bombarding other anglers with social media posts, but instead is about nature, solitude, and a bit of time away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Sometimes, I think it fair to say that many anglers forget that, and sometimes lose their focus… I know I do, but now when I feel a bit jaded, I think a trip to the canal, with a pint of maggots and some floats will refresh my mind… just like when I was a kid!

It was a slightly quieter week in the County Senior League this week, with a number of the leagues’ teams taking part in County Cup across the week. However, there was still no shortage of action, with fixtures midweek as well as on the weekend. Premier Division Dodworth Miners Welfare continued their 100% start to life in the Premier Division since promotion in the summer, with backto-back wins this week. On Wednesday night they beat Hepworth United 2-1, and then they impressively beat High Green Villa 6-0 away from home on Saturday to claim their sixth victory of the season. North Gawber Colliery have five wins from six after a 9-3 win over Grimethorpe Sports at Grimethorpe Sports Ground on Saturday afternoon. Both Luke Marsden and Matthew Thornton scored hat-tricks for North Gawber who sit in second. Grimethorpe have had a difficult start to the season and sit second bottom, after also losing midweek 2-1 at South Kirkby Colliery. Swinton Athletic’s tricky start to the season continued, as they lost 1-0 away against Penistone Church Reserves. That means last years’ Premier Division winners have already lost twice in their first three games of the new season. Goals from Ben Furniss and Leon Howarth were enough to give Frecheville a 2-0 home win against Oughtibridge WMSC. Oughtibridge bounced back straight away though, with a 1-0 win against Handsworth Parramore Reserves on the weekend. It was back-to-back draws for Jubilee Sports this past week. On Wednesday they were held at home 2-2 by Stocksbridge Park Steels Reserves. They then drew 1-1 against Hepworth United at Far Lane on Saturday.

Division One Just like Premier Division leaders Dodworth, Burngreave won the league below and now lead their new division at this early stage. Goals from Amgad Mohammed (2) and Faisal Nadeem gave Burngreave a midweek 3-1 win over Brinsworth Whitehill at Pheonix Sports Club. Burngreave have won all four of their games so far. Also on four wins from four games are Ecclesfield Red Rose 1915. Ecclesfield beat Houghton Main 2- 0 at home on Wednesday evening. A hat-trick from Adam Kennedy helped inspire Denaby Main to a 7-3 win over AFC Dronfield on Saturday. Nathan Lovell (2), Ryan Poole and Matthew Westwood were also on target for Denaby. Sheffield Bankers got themselves off the mark in style on Saturday, with a 6-1 win over Millmoor Juniors at Grange Park. Millmoor had also been beaten earlier in the week, 2-1 at home by Boynton Sports. There were high-scoring draws between Sheffield Medics and Wombwell Main Reserves (2-2) at Norton Playing Fields and a 3-3 between Kiveton Park and Sheffield Medics at Wales High School. AFC Dronfield and Caribbean Sports played-out a rare goalless draw at Gosforth Fields on Wednesday night. Division Two Stocksbridge Park Steels Development lead the way in Division Two, after a 3-1 win over Caribbean Sports Reserves on the weekend. A brace form Patryk Zukowski gave United Worksop their first win in the County Senior League at the second attempt, as they beat Swinton Athletic Reserves 2-1 at Manton Athletic Sports Ground. Sheffield Union also claimed their first win, as they beat Thurcroft Miners Institute 4-1 at the Thurcroft Hub.

WARNE ASSESSES OPENING TO THE SEASON

Rotherham United boss Paul Warne admits his side are learning quickly ahead of the resumption of the Sky Bet Championship campaign this weekend. The Millers host Frank Lampard’s Derby County at AESSEAL New York Stadium following the international break, with Warne using the fixture gap to asses his side’s progression following promotion last season. After a difficult start away at Brentford, the Millers showed all their fighting qualities to record home victories over Ipswich and Millwall, but when looking good to add to their points tally last time out, they conceded a late goal against Wigan. Whilst Warne still feels his side would

have been good value for a point at the DW Stadium, he is taking the positives from the start to the campaign. “I do think that we can compete with a lot of teams in this league and we are always carrying a goal threat,” he told www. themillers.co.uk “It still thought that we deserved to get something from the Wigan game, so that was a little disappointing but we did take a little fatigue into the match from the Everton game. “That’s no excuse but I think after the opening month the league is as hard as we expected. We expected the top teams to be really good, so I am not telling anything we didn’t already know - they will be really tough games. We need to start picking up some points on the road, but I think the lads are now well aware of what the games entail and the standards that they need to reach.” With the second tier looking as strong as it ever has, Warne is aware of some stern challenges ahead with the likes of Derby, Aston Villa, Nottingham Forest and Stoke to play before the end of September. But Warne has seen a progression in his side, and believes the learning process from the opening month of the campaign will only stand them in good stead. “Even though we have lost a few, we have always tried to learn from it,” he continued. “We have always taken the positives. We have watched all the games back intently. From the Wigan game we looked back and said we were probably three or four yards too deep in the first-half, and when we had a better line in the second-half we looked a much better prospect. We need to be braver with our defensive line, but generally we are pleased and we have used to the break productively to get more information into the players.”

started well and should have scored again but we sat back a little bit and found it difficult. “I think Luton are a very good team, probably the best we’ve played, and it’s a group that are used to winning games. We showed a different side to us when we had to, we were capable of rolling our sleeves up and grinding the game out.” The win extended Rovers’ unbeaten league run at home to four games, and McCann feels they have to maintain that for as long as possible. He added: “It was important to get back to winning ways, we’ve shown how well we can Grant McCann felt Rovers found a different perform so it’s good to get three points. way to win after beating Luton Town 2-1 in “You have to be able to do both sides of Sky Bet League One. the game well, we’ve been frustrated with Goals from Matty Blair and Ben Whiteman dominating games without the result at the end secured the victory at the Keepmoat Stadium, of it. WHITEMAN BUZZING AFTER STRIKE SEALS LUTON WIN Ben Whiteman revealed there was a real buzz in the changing room following Rovers’ 2-1 win over Luton Town in Sky Bet League One on Saturday. The midfielder scored just 35 seconds into the second half to seal three points at the Keepmoat Stadium as Rovers extended their unbeaten home record in the league this season.

“We’re all delighted that we’ve managed to grind out the result, to win like we did showed a different side to us - we’ve got what we’ve deserved after a lot of that hard work over the past few weeks,” he said. “The character the boys have shown is massive for us, it was a huge effort from everyone that played and we’re all coming away very happy with the result. “I don’t see any reason why we should fear anyone in this league, on our day we can play anyone off the park and, as we’ve seen here, we can dig a result out when we need to as well.” Whiteman’s winner was his first goal for Rovers since New Year’s Day away at Peterborough United and, while he was relieved to end his wait for a goal, the midfielder says getting the win was more important. “It’s my first goal since I signed here permanently and I’m always looking for the chance to score so I’m happy one fell for me, I got lucky with getting on the rebound but I timed my run well and stuck it in the back of the net,” he added. “At the end of the day all that matters is getting the three points come full time, luckily we’ve managed to get the win - we’re always going to create chances and it’s fell for us. “We’re not going to be resting up now. We need to be back in on Monday morning in training, working hard ready for the next game, we want to continue our form now with a win at Walsall and that’s what we’ll be setting out to do.”

RUGBY LEAGUE WORLD CUP BID A joint bid to bring Rugby League World Cup fixtures to Sheffield in 2021 is one step closer. The city has successfully progressed to the candidate stage of the Rugby League World Cup 2021 (RLWC2021). Organisers of the tournament have confirmed that Sheffield’s joint bid from Sheffield City Council, United, SIV and Sheffield Eagles has passed the first stage of the selection process. It means some of the world’s top teams could be playing at United’s Bramall Lane stadium when the tournament comes

to England between 23rd October 2021 and 27th November 2021. It could also mean that games in the Ladies and Wheelchair competitions will be played at Sheffield Olympic Legacy Park and the English Institute of Sport Sheffield. In addition, the city could be hosting one of the competing teams. The bid, submitted in July this year, is for the 32,600 capacity Bramall Lane to stage a number of men’s matches, with games in the women’s tournament and the wheelchair tournament at Sheffield Olympic

Legacy Park and the English Institute of Sport Sheffield. RLWC2021 officials will now make site visits to the city’s facilities and write an assessment report review. A final decision on the host venues will be made in January 2019. Dave McCarthy, operations director at United, said: “To make the candidate stage for such a prestigious global event is incredible for the club and the city. “The Rugby League World Cup 2021 team are looking to deliver the most viewed tournament ever which will showcase Sheffield to a global audience

of millions. Through continual investment in the stadium, we’re capable of attracting the biggest and best events to Bramall Lane. “Sheffield and Bramall Lane are renowned for sporting legacy and we would be extremely proud to work with the organisers to help deliver a long-lasting legacy that celebrates the heritage of the sport and increases the participation and interest in Rugby League across the world.” The 2021 Rugby League World Cup will be the sixteenth staging of the event. The tournament will be one of the most inclusive and diverse events ever hosted in England, incorporating the Men’s, Women’s and Wheelchair World Cup disciplines.

RIP GEOFF

Sheffield United were saddened to hear of the passing last week of former club physio Geoff Goodall, after illness. Geoff, who lived in Dronfield, was arguably the first person to hold the role of physio as an actual post other than way back in the days of George Waller. Joining the staff in 1962, Geoff also practised as a chiropodist. He was a key member of the backroom at the Lane in the days of John Harris and was well regarded by all. Club legend, Len Badger, commented: “Geoff was a great bloke and good at his job, he ran the treatment room that was in the cricket pavilion, looking after all the knocks and scrapes when the facilities and equipment were not what they are today, he was around for all the years that I played and lived not too far from me and the other lads in Dronfield. “It is always sad when another important part of our lives passes on, he was a part of some great United sides and shared the joy of promotion in 1970/71. People always remember the players but, as it is today, there are other unsung heroes that play an important part behind the scenes, and Geoff came under that description. I always bumped into him out and about and looked forward to seeing him, a genuinely good man who saw such a lot with us all, our thoughts are with his lovely family at this sad time.” Geoff, pictured treating goalkeeper John Hope, stayed with United until 1981, just short of 20 years’ service. He attended various reunions of that famous side at Bramall Lane over the years with the lads that he had helped mend and get back out on the pitch playing back in the days when football was a very different game. The owners, directors and staff at Sheffield United would like to echo Len Badger’s sentiments and extend their sincere condolences to the Goodall family at this sad time.

LEE AND HOOPER RETURN FOR U23s VICTORY Wednesday’s Under-23s ran out 2-1 winners against Colchester at Hillsborough on Monday. An early own goal from U’s defender Oliver

Kensdale and a Morgan Fox strike was enough to seal the points before a late penalty from Noah Chilvers set up a tense finale. Victory sees Wednesday maintain their unbeaten

run at home so far this season. As well as both Kieran Lee and Gary Hooper being involved, boss Neil Thompson fielded a strong side, including the likes of Joe

Wildsmith and Fox. Wednesday’s afternoon started in perfect fashion, taking the lead within the opening two minutes. Ben Hughes sent Jack Stobbs scampering free, the defender played over a low cross and it was turned into his own net by Colchester centre half Kensdale. The Owls went close to doubling their advantage on nine minutes. Kieran Lee played the ball out wide for Stobbs to latch onto and he sent over a low cross for Hooper, only for U’s goalkeeper Bailey Vose to just get their first. The visitors could have got themselves back into the game on 13 minutes but his well struck effort from just outside the box blocked by Owls skipper Connor

O’Grady. Wednesday were carrying the greater threat on the counter and Stobbs was denied by Vose after cutting in off the right flank. It was proving one-way traffic and Wednesday, after seeing Lee leave the field on 16 minutes, almost doubled their lead on 23 minutes when Hooper fired just wide. The visitors had Bailey Vose to thank just before the half-hour when he produced an excellent save with his feet to deny Fraser Preston. The U’s went close to drawing level on 71 minutes when striker Ryan Gondoh fired wide of the target after a great forward run before substitute Arjanit Krasniqi was denied by Wildsmith.

But Wednesday doubled their lead on 77 minutes courtesy of an excellent curling finish from Fox. The left back received substitute Jordan Lonchar’s pass and the defender curled home from 18 yards. The Owls’ task was to be made a little tense in the final eight minutes when Colchester halved the deficit. Fox tripped Hassanally inside the penalty area and midfielder Chilvers stepped up to take the penalty and send Wildsmith the wrong way. Wednesday: Wildsmith; Hughes, O’Grady, Kirby, Fox, K Lee (Brennan 16), Hunt, J Lee, Stobbs, Hooper (Sang 46) Preston (Lonchar 74)
