QUALITY STREETS MAKEOVER STARTS IN DONCASTER TOWN CENTRE The transformation of Hall Gate in Doncaster town centre has begun. Hall Gate will become a highly attractive and vibrant area thanks to the £2 million Quality Streets scheme. The raft of improvements will see the road made into a one way street. This means footway paving areas can be widened and enhanced providing more outside space for businesses to introduce
alfresco areas. The transformation will see the existing parking bays replaced with loading bays, better bus stops installed and a dedicated cycle lane. New lighting, specimen trees and quality York stone will provide additional appeal for visitors. To enable the works to take place safely, Hall Gate needs to be closed for traffic with a diversion in place. It will be open for pedestrians and the shops will be open for
business as normal. Once Hall Gate is complete in spring 2019, work to improve Silver Street will follow. Silver Street is set for a big makeover too. It will become a one-way street during the day and closed for traffic in an evening. This will encourage more alfresco areas and ensure it is a pedestrian friendly space. High quality landscaping materials will be used to dramatically change the feel of the area
and a bespoke lighting scheme will bring animation and colour adding to the visitor experience. The Quality Streets scheme is part of the Innovation Quarter in the overarching Urban Centre Masterplan. Cllr Bill Mordue, Cabinet Member for Business, Skills and Economic Development, said: “I am delighted to see work get underway on this important Quality Streets project. Bringing this part of town alive through this

major regeneration scheme shows our commitment to creating the right conditions to attract new investment into the town centre and encouraging more visitors which will help support businesses. “We are delivering the ambitions of our Urban Centre Masterplan and investing for the future. These are exciting times for the town centre and the rest of our borough.” The Quality Streets scheme is benefiting
from £1.35 million from Sheffield City Region Growth Fund (SCRIF) which has come from the Local Growth Fund (LGF). This is Government funding awarded to Local Enterprise Partnerships (LEPs) for projects that benefit the local area and economy. £476,000 has also come from Transforming Cites, a national funding pot. Dan Jarvis, Mayor of the Sheffield City Region, said: “ When I became Mayor I promised to support
the regeneration of Doncaster town centre, so I am delighted that work to revitalise Hall Gate is set to begin. “It is vital that we rethink how our town centres work to ensure they remain vibrant and sustainable places where more people live, work and visit. Doncaster has set out an ambitious but deliverable masterplan to achieve. The investment put into this project by the Local Growth Fund, which comes via the Local Enterprise Partnership, will transform Doncaster town centre.” Local Enterprise Partnerships are playing a vital role in driving forward
economic growth across the country, helping to build a country that works for everyone. That’s why by 2021 Government will have invested over £12bn through the Local Growth Fund, allowing LEPs to use their local knowledge to get all areas of the country firing on all cylinders. The Quality Streets project should be complete by September 2019. For more details about the Quality Streets scheme visit www.doncaster.gov. uk/qualitystreets

SHEFFIELD’S OWN “TIMES SQUARE” OPENS Dubbed ‘Sheffield’s own version of New York’s Times Square’, New Era Square’s Phase One launch gave investors, local businesses and organisations an exclusive look at the first half of the large-scale project currently being delivered by New Era Development LTD. The New Era Square scheme has been recognised as ‘a vital stage in the regeneration of Sheffield city centre’ and has already resulted in the generation of 300,000 man-hours of work during the construction of Phase One. The project has been welcomed by both shareholders and
Sheffield residents, from local businesses who will make use of the retail units and office space, to students looking for a base in Sheffield and the general public who will be able to make use of the retail space, restaurants and cafes. Jerry Cheung, Managing Director of New Era Development LTD said: ‘Everyone at New Era Development are thrilled with the launch. Phase One has been a long time coming; this project has been in the works since its conception in 2005 so to have reached the official half-way point is incredibly exciting.” Guests at the event were able to experience first hand some of the features
of the New Era Square, including tours of the KH Oriental supermarket and retail units of Costa Coffee and Dunkin’ Donuts. The ‘Sheffield Chinatown’ as New Era Square has been nicknamed has been designed to ‘integrate the Chinese community with the rest of Sheffield, rather than keeping it separate, and to reflect the future, rather than the past, with a modern take on the ‘Chinatown’ concept. Phase Two of the project is already underway and will include further student apartments, offices, a medical centre, restaurants and more retail units, adding to
those already onsite. The focus of Phase Two will be the China-UK Business Incubator, which will be situated within the office building in the heart of the New Era Square and aims to support and offer practical solutions to both local businesses based in Sheffield and those coming from China into the UK. Councillor Mazher Iqbal, cabinet member for business and investment at Sheffield City Council, said: “It’s been great to witness the New Era Square developments up close and to celebrate this remarkable achievement for the city centre. “New Era Square will be a stunning gateway to the
city, a superb standard of accommodation and vibrancy, whilst providing a strong connection to our ongoing business activity in China and the Far East. “The new incubator will attract businesses from China to establish a presence in Sheffield. By working with the wider business community in Sheffield to provide support, we aspire to provide the best environment for businesses looking to settle in our great city. “The building is in a development that can be enjoyed by all of Sheffield and its public realm complements our own developments in the Heart Of The City.”

ALBERT SNODGRASS My son asked me: “Dad, did you get a haircut?” “No I got them all cut,” I replied. 100 years ago everyone had a horse and only the rich had cars. Nowadays everyone has a car and only the rich have horses. Oh how the stables have turned... I went for a job interview today and the manager said, “We’re looking for someone who is responsible.” “Well, I’m your man.” I replied, “In my last job, whenever anything went wrong, they said I was responsible.” We all know Albert Einstein was a genius... But his brother Frank was a monster. My mate gave me a terrible thesaurus. It was terrible. I went to lunch with a champion chess player. It took him 8 minutes to pass me the salt... Others, like Moana and Frozen, inspire a new generation of young girls through self-reliance and a belief in themselves.” Dream Big captures all the magic and adventure of Disney’s immortal tales through cutting edge figure-skating, eye-catching costumes and stunning set designs. ATTRACTIONS
It may help to cut back your schedule if possible, as this can ease things and lessen frustration. But while certain people can be difficult, others may go out of their way to help and could be very charming. The weekend can see you revel in fun plans and good company. Call for more advice...
If feelings between you and another have been suppressed, then they could come to a head at the time of the powerful Aries Full Moon. It may be easy to say too much, but if you can avoid doing so, it gives you a chance to discuss matters when you are more settled. Call for more astral advice...
If you feel elated but sometimes emotional, this may be down to a powerful lunar phase bringing up echoes of the past. Give yourself time to reflect during the early days of the week by taking time to yourself if you can. Any cloudy moods may seem to fade as the days go by. Call for more...
If you are going to be busy, it might help to pare down your schedule so you have more chance to deal with unexpected disruptions. It may even be better to move some of your commitments to later in the week, as you can then work through them with less trouble Scorpio. Call for more astral advice...
A social occasion can be lively and sizzle with promise. If you prefer events where you can chat peacefully, this might not be one of them though. Even so, leisure options may keep you busy for the rest of the week with a dynamic aspect encouraging you to say yes to a bold idea. Call for more...
If you had plans for a social event, one or two dramas can perhaps play out. This is something you may not be able to avoid, but you can still make the most of the occasion by refusing to get involved. Solo? There are more chances for meeting that special companion this week. Call for more astral advice...
Currently, the best advice is to avoid discussing sensitive issues, if possible. Later in the week things settle down, and so can you. If matters have been intense lately, you can now relax and treat yourself to some pampering or a romantic outing with your significant other. Call for more astral advice...
If you are hoping for a relaxed week, a powerful lunar phase in your domestic sector suggests that it might not work out that way. With Saturn involved in the mix, frustration could set in. Wait it out as things will soon become more relaxed. You also have opportunities to be in the spotlight. Call for more...
You could face disruptions to your plans, in which case patience can be a virtue should feelings run high. As the week gathers pace, life gets easier and you may experience a greater sense of flow. A special event or party at your place can bring a lively ambiance to the weekend. Call for more...
You may not be in the mood to hold back at the start of the week, as the Full Moon can encourage you to express your feelings in no uncertain terms. But if you can detach for a few days, then any conversations you hold could be a lot more constructive Aquarius. Call for more astral advice...
It may be best to avoid decisions concerning financial or sensitive issues, as with a turbulent few days on the astral cards, things may not be as they seem. This is in contrast to the second half of the week, when there is a more relaxed pace. A chance to increase your cash flow can show up. Call for more...
The coming days bring an opportunity to resolve an issue that may have been niggling you for some time. And if it has affected your self-worth, then it is long overdue. Feelings around this matter may come to a head, and can be the catalyst that encourages you to do something. Call for more advice...

IS YOUR DRIVING LICENCE VALID? MACMILLAN COFFEE Over two million people have an out-ofdate photocard driving licence. There’s a £1,000 fine if you don’t renew it, so check yours now. This guide shows you how to check whether your licence is valid, how and where to renew, and how to ensure you’re covered when driving abroad, plus what to do if you still have a paper licence. There are three big checks to do on your driving licence. Dig yours out NOW and ensure you do them all, or you could face a £1,000 fine. 1. Check the photocard driving licence expiry date. Photocard licences replaced paper licences in 1998, and must be renewed every 10 years. The DVLA says 2.3 million photocards are out of date. Driving licence photos must be replaced every 10 years. It’s easy to forget, but a quick check now could save you a fine of up to £1,000 if your photocard’s expired. It’s £14 to renew online or £17 if you renew by post. The photo expiry date is printed on section 4b on the front of the card. 2. Check your correct address is on it Forget to update your address and you risk a £1,000 fine if stopped by the police - so check now to make sure it’s correct. If your address isn’t accurate, or if you’ve moved since you registered, it’s free to update. 3. Check your name is correct if you’ve changed it The third check is to make sure your name is
correct on your driving licence, particularly if you’ve changed it since getting married. Direct Line previously found 3% of married women had an out-of-date name on their licence, which could also incur a £1,000 fine. So if you think you could be affected, check now. For full information regarding all aspects of driving see the government website. www.gov.uk/browse/driving/driving-licences Renew your licence if you’re 70 or over Renew your driving licence online with DVLA for free if you’re 70 or over – or will be 70 in the next 90 days.Apply using your Government Gateway ID. If you don’t have one or need to re-register, you’ll get an ID as part of your application. You can use this service to renew your British driving licence if you’re 70 or over, or will be 70 in the next 90 days, and: • your British licence has expired – or it’s going to expire within 90 days • you’re a resident of Great Britain (there’s a different service in Northern Ireland) • you meet the minimum eyesight requirement • you aren’t prevented from driving for any reason Once you reach 70, you must renew every 3 years. You can change the licence photo at the same time as renewing your licence. Your licence should arrive within one week if you apply online.

BRITISH BLUES LEGEND VICTOR KNOX TO BAND ‘UNITE THE UNION’ BETWEEN PLAY SHOW AT THE TOOLMAKERS BREWERY SHEFFIELD & TWIN CITY Manchester born blues legend Victor Brox is probably one of the most underrated champions of the British Blues scene and its unsung hero. He’ll be in Sheffield on November 20th at the Toolmakers Brewery on Botsford Street, S3. This may well have been because he has refused to be pigeonholed into any single category and has produced an eclectic style which often
defied analysis. What cannot be disputed is his excellent singing voice, musical virtuosity and total eccentricity. He was described by Jimi Hendrix and Tina Turner as their favourite white blues singer. He is without doubt a national treasure. He has worked with: Eric Clapton, Jimi Hendrix, Ritchie Blackmore and Ian Gillan of Deep Purple, Charlie
Mingus, Memphis Slim, Dr. John, Aynsley Dunbar, Graham Bond, Alexis Korner, John Mayall, Country Joe McDonald, Keith Moon, Bill Coleman and Screaming Lord Sutch. In 1970 Victor performed as Caiaphas on the original recording of Tom Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Jesus Christ Superstar.

DAPHNE’S FLIGHT With a complete line-up of all five original members and a brand new studio album, this is the tour that fans have been waiting for since their first impromptu performance at Cambridge festival in 1995, when they took a packed club tent by storm and decided the time was right to join forces. Drawing on their collective wealth of talent and varied styles, each of them accomplished songwriters, musicians and renowned singers, it was the combination of all five voices, a powerhouse of harmonies, that left audiences breathless and brought them much critical acclaim. As well as the many original songs they each brought to the group, they breathed new life into classic contemporary covers from The Beach Boys to The Beatles, Bill Withers to Randy Newman and anyone who saw Daphne’s Flight live will tell you their version of E.C. Ball’s ‘Father Adieu’ was the stuff of musical legend! With as much energy and enthusiasm as they ever had, Daphne’s are truly excited to be reuniting again and hope you will join them in the next leg of the flight for what promises to be a memorable year. Chocks away!

A tired but happy Unite the Union Band returned home exhilarated by the fantastic ‘thumbs up’ given to them by the people of Bochum after their two performances at Bochumer Musiksommer 2018. This massive spectacle now in its 12th year, is held in Sheffield’s twin town, Bochum, North Rhine Westfalia in Germany. Playing host to over 160,000 visitors to the city and with over 1000 artists appearing on several stages over the three days makes this one of the biggest Music Festivals in Germany.
The band received a special invitation to perform by Bochum Lord Mayor Oberbürgermeister Eiskirch and Bochum Council and given two prime time slots for performances on Saturday at 6pm and Sunday at 12 noon to open the show. This year around 1,000 artists were engaged over three days, 127 concerts from classical to jazz to electronic music being presented on seven stages and other venues around the city. A video message of ‘Good Luck’, specially recorded by Mr Len
McClusky, General Secretary of Unite the Union and sent to the band, acknowledged the fantastic opportunity for the band to represent the city of Sheffield and fly the Unite flag in front of tens of thousands of visitors to Bochumer Musiksommer. “For the first time, after a long time, the twin cities have returned, Nordhausen with a concert choir and Lord Mayor Kai Buchmann, Sheffield with the Unite the Union Brass band. We want to revive the town twinning,” said Oberbürgermeister Thomas Eiskirch at the opening in the evening. Unite the Union Band’s performance on the main Moritz Fiege stage was very well received and soon the near capacity audience were swaying, clapping and dancing to the sounds of Sheffield’s own famous film and music artists and writers including Human League
and Tony Christie, who himself lived for a time in the outskirts of Bochum. Pre-recorded narration spoken in German cleverly done by the band linked their whole set together and finishing their performance with an arrangement of Oktoberfest and festival standard ‘Rock Mi,’ chart hit for German/Austrian group Voxxclub, was a real winner, now the party really was in full swing! A chorus of “Zugabe,” “Zugabe” (more, more) from the thrilled audience echoed around the square as the band left the stage swamped by enthusiastic and animated congratulations from a waiting Oberbürgermeister Eiskirch himself, town councillors, marketing organisers and members of the public, many of whom returned to see the band perform again on Sunday. It is hoped that the band will return to perform again at Bochumer Musiksommer next year.

BBQ PATIO H & EAT GAS FOR ER SALE
More than 100 people are killed or seriously injured every year in accidents caused by tailgating motorists, worrying new analysis has revealed. The study by Highways England shows that one in eight (12.5%) of all casualties on England’s major routes are caused by drivers tailgating, that is – travelling too close to the vehicle in front. In response to the figures, Highways England has launched a campaign called ‘Don’t Be A Space Invader’, using the classic arcade game to warn motorists about not leaving enough space. The RAC supports the Highways England campaign, welcoming the move to help curb aggressive driving such as tailgating, a leading concern of motorists. The Highway Code states that drivers should allow for a two-second gap between themselves and the
vehicle in front, doubling that amount if the road is wet or slippery. But Highways England believes most tailgaters are unaware that they are invading the space of other drivers, with only a small minority deliberately tailgating. The organisation hopes that the new campaign, fronted by former Formula 1 world champion Nigel Mansell, will raise awareness of the dangers and help stamp out the issue. Mr Mansell said: “Tailgating is a driving habit I utterly deplore. Not only is it aggressive and intimidating, but it can lead to a crash with a tragic outcome.” RAC Head of Roads Policy, Nicholas Lyes, said that not only does tailgating put lives in danger, it also creates a deeply unpleasant driving environment on the roads. He said: “Tailgating won’t increase your chances of getting to your destination more quickly, it will simply increase the chances of a serious collision. “Our message to drivers is that they should keep at least a two second gap, and use the chevrons indicated on some roads to understand what a safe gap looks like in reality. “Of course, in poor weather conditions, extra space is essential.”

ANGLER’S CORNER
with Clint Walker
I’ve been thoroughly disheartened this week. I spend a lot of time on social media, it’s part of my daily workload, and to be honest, it’s getting incredibly boring reading the same stuff, by the same suspects week in, week out. Don’t get me wrong, I love seeing what people are catching, and especially where they are catching them, but it’s the way that it’s put across… Specifically, I’m fed up to the back teeth with clichés. Why won’t anyone write anything new? One the things I try extremely hard to avoid is the angling cliché, or sentences which try too much to be ‘carpy’ (I hate that word as well!) but it seems I’m in a minority... Please allow me to consider a few… “Rods on the dance floor” ‘Eh? You won’t catch much there will you? Never have I seen a fish dance, nor have I seen any in the area where one might either swing a mean hoof or throw some shapes, so where on earth has that one come from? What does it mean? If you mean that your baits are positioned appropriately in a likely area of the lake, why not just say that? How about; “Traps set”. Accompanied by either a picture of rods set up, or alternatively a kettle fizzing on a gas stove. Obviously; there isn’t a great deal of point in fishing if you’re just going to sit on the bank staring at the water. It’s far better to present your baits on a cunning rig, so why not just say that? You’re not in the pest control game are you? (Apologies obviously to any anglers who may actually be highly qualified unwanted guest exterminators) It doesn’t make you appear as stealthy as a hungry Ray Mears (who incidentally can set traps) nor does it purvey an air of outdoorsmanship the rest of us may not have. You’re under your bivvy, on a comfortable padded seat, probably with a brew in hand; hardly an Indian scout tracking a buffalo are you, so why not just say that? “Office for the day.” Again, usually accompanied by a picture of an expensive rod set up on the
bank, or seatbox (preferably adorned with angler’s name) with rods arrayed akimbo, often with filtered sunrise… No, it isn’t; there are very few people lucky enough to be able to fish for a living, and therefore it isn’t your office for the day, it’s your casual way of saying “You’re at work, I’m not, and it’s a midweek day when I probably should be…” using the power of social media to convey your smugness… “I’m fishing, lucky me” is what you really mean, so why not just say that? “Quick overnighter”. Regardless of the number of hours spent on the bank in darkness, it always appears to be an overnight session during which time passes much more rapidly than for everyone else. Do the night hours magically pass with more haste just because you are fishing? A quick overnighter means less than four hours in the height of summer because you have work in the morning, not a twelve hour session which you are endeavouring to make sound ‘carpy’ (there’s that word again) in order to instil jealousy in the hearts of those who are confined by work, family, and money to fish measly day only sessions… so why not just say that? The one which really grinds my gears is “Cheeky”. There is NOTHING cheeky about fishing, especially carp fishing. It’s a smelly, dull pastime in which we pit our feeble wits against slippery fish, making most anglers particularly unattractive to the opposite sex, therefore it certainly isn’t cheeky. A pair of Romanian sisters who can’t sing may be properly described as cheeky, a coy toddler with dimples may also rightly be similarly thought of, but a camoclad, overweight, middle aged man driving a small van with fishing stickers on (carpy ‘innit?) is most definitely not CHEEKY! If you mean fun, then yes, I can subscribe to that, but why not just say that? So, what is “Carpy”? I don’t even understand it really, I’m aware it is uttered in reference to carp fishing, but despite my endeavours, I’ve yet to find anything in the dictionary which might comfortably describe the act of being “carpy”. Does it refer to the act of grown men attending social events (especially fishing shows) well away from the bank, whilst wearing completely unnecessary camouflage

clothing? Is it when someone who has briefly, once, passed a ‘celeb’ angler in the toilets at said show without speaking, but now refers to them as “my mate Tel/Jules/Kev” as required to infer an intimate friendship? Might it be the constant criticism of products never seen, which won’t ever be used, but which are to be soon released by a company with which he has no connection? Especially when done across the medium of social media? Could be… How about the single word comment “mat” when someone posts a joyous shot without appropriate “carpy” protective resting place for all to see by way of jealous criticism? That surely has to be “carpy”? Or better still, when an image is posted and a weight given “…that’s never (insert stated weight) this one I caught is (insert stated weight) you want to get your scales checked mate” intimating that the happy captor is little more than a liar? “Big hands” has to be a “carpy” winner surely… another classic comment oft used by the keyboard angler to assume (with a nod and a wink to non-existent “carpy” chums) that the captor, once again, is a fibber? I don’t know… perhaps if that IS what you mean by “carpy”, why not just say that? Having vented my spleen a little, I’m now off to set my traps on the dance floor of my cheeky carpy office whilst checking social media to gauge appropriate levels of ‘carpiness’ by my compatriots…see what I mean? I’m off fishing…

MILLERS WELLEQUIPPED FOR Follow Your Local Team Every Week In The Mercury CHAMPIONSHIP CHALLENGE - JONES
GREAT DAY AT THE OFFICE
Millers Manager Paul Warne assessed his side’s performance after a terrific 1-0 victory over Derby County. Ryan Manning’s first goal for the Millers, which came from the penalty spot in the second-half, was enough to secure all of the points against the Rams. Speaking to the press after the game, Warne said, “I thought our performance, first-half, was very good. We were the better team and had more possession of the ball, I think. Our set-pieces weren’t as good as they have been but I thought we deserved to go one or two up at half-time. I was really pleased and after the first five minutes, the lads grew into it and got a bit of confidence. “Obviously they were going to come at us and I thought they had the edge, second-half. But I don’t think my ‘keeper’s made any saves that I can recall. Then obviously to get the penalty and them down to 10 men – I’m never a fan of it. I know fans love it when you see a player get sent off. I don’t think it helps the game but I understand why the ref has to do it. But I think it’s harder to play against 10 than it is 11. “Then they could be a bit more gung-ho and my fans want me to put seven up-front so it’s mayhem! It made it edgier, them going down to 10 men. Overall, I thought we were deserved of the win and we were
excellent. If we play that well at home and really battle and scrap the way the lads had to, I think we’ll be okay. “The quality of player they’ve got and quality of bench they’ve got, it’s going to be a really tough ask of the lads. But I’ve got really good coaches, we set up in a really good way to try and frustrate them and to try and counter-attack. The lads grew in confidence and really fancied it.” Speaking of the penalty decision, which was given by the referee’s assistant, Warne added, “I didn’t see why it was given but I was pleased, and even more pleased when it hit the net. I can’t honestly say I saw anything but there must have been something because when the ball went into the box, the crowd yelped. The linesman was waving furiously but I didn’t know if he was waving for a foul on us or by us.” The three points and clean sheet means it’s three wins from four without conceding at the AESSEAL New York Stadium, with Warne praising his side’s defensive resolve. “I’m really pleased, obviously,” he continued. “My two centre-halves; Robbo, unfortunately, picked up an injury this week so he’ll be out for a few weeks. And Sean Raggett who came in and did really well, he’s out for a few weeks. I thought Woody was outstanding, as is Sem who is growing with every game. It’s disappointing for Sem because I like him in the middle of the park more than centre-half but he tidied up behind Woody a couple of times.”
Whilst injuries may have hampered Billy Jones’ start to life at AESSEAL New York Stadium, the desire within the club to defy the odds in the Sky Bet Championship has not been lost on the experienced operator. Jones, who joined from Sunderland in the summer, has drawn comparisons between Crewe Alexandra, where he spent the formative years of his career, to the Millers current fight to establish themselves amongst some of English football’s most prestigious clubs in the second tier. The now-31-year-old was making his name at Gresty Road during the club’s years in the Championship and believes that the early signs with Rotherham United suggest they are better equipped to compete with the division’s elite. “At the time our main target was to stop in the league being in there with some really big clubs,” Jones said of his time with Crewe. “There were some massive teams in with the likes of West Ham and it was great to be playing against the so-called bigger players and clubs. “The similarities are there. I feel that we’ve got a much better squad than what we did at the time with Crewe and I think that has shown with the start we’ve had.
“I think our performance at the weekend was really, really good and its set the level for where we need to be performing every game.” Jones’ CV in the game means that he possesses an extensive knowledge of the qualities needed to succeed at second tier level and the defender took time to praise the management and coaching staff with the Millers, who he believes equip the team with all the necessary information each time they go into battle. “From the coaching and the management point of view, every game that we go into we work very hard on our game plan, attacking-wise and defensively, and it’s just really refreshing,” he continued. “We’re giving ourselves every chance within every game. “At previous clubs that hasn’t been the case at times. We would maybe go into games a little bit underprepared but here, there’s no stone left unturned.” Injuries have prevented Jones from establishing himself as a first team regular so far, with Bristol City defender Zak Vyner having been a mainstay in the right back berth this season, however, the former Sunderland and West Brom man insists he has enjoyed his start to life in Rotherham. “It’s been great. I had an opportunity to play in the cup but got injured in that game against Wigan and it came at a bad time. Fortunately, I was only out for a couple of weeks and then I was straight back into it. “I’m really enjoying being here. When I came the gaffer spoke about what a close-knit group we are and the great lads we’ve got here and that’s definitely the case. It’s a great group and everyone is willing to work hard for each other, we’re all pulling in the same direction.”

MCCANN HAILS SQUAD ATTITUDE Rovers manager Grant McCann says he has been impressed with the approach of his players this season. Saturday’s win against Walsall was their fourth of the season, also drawing three and losing just once in League One, and while McCann is pleased with the start his side have made he maintains he is always looking for more. “It’s been a good start for us so far, but we’re not going to get carried away, we’re eight games in, nothing has been settled this early on in the season, we’ve still got a lot of work to do but they’re adapting all the time,” he said. “It’s a clever group here, they’re always willing to learn, they can easily change the system in which

they play, just like the did here, we started in the diamond then switched to the three up top, and they’re working hard but I still want more. “We’ve really shown what we can do and I’m really impressed with how we’ve started the season, we’re starting to show a real identity in the way that we want to play and hopefully we can carry that on over the coming weeks.” Rovers come from behind to beat the Saddlers, with goals from John Marquis, Mallik Wilks, James Coppinger and Matty Blair seeing them secure a 4-1 win at the Banks’s Stadium, and McCann felt his side had blown their hosts out of the water after the break. “It’s a brilliant result for us, it’s not been an easy place to come so far this season, or for us in general in the past, but I said before the game we wanted to right the wrongs of last season, and what better way to do it than that,” he added. “We just edged the first half in my opinion, but we were outstanding in the second half and blew them away. “It’s a result that’s been coming for us this season, we’re creating a lot of chances and it hasn’t quite fallen for us in recent weeks, but we were clinical here and we’re all delighted we’ve got the job done.”
COPPINGER: WALSALL WIN WAS FOR PIEMAN James Coppinger revealed the Rovers side were inspired by attending the funeral of a popular fan the day before Saturday’s 4-1 victory over Walsall in Sky Bet League One. Coppinger, alongside his Rovers teammates, attended the funeral of Jake ‘Pieman’ Power on Friday, and he felt the experience spurred both himself and the side on to three points. “We all went to Jake’s funeral the day before the game, and after it I felt like I was always going to score. It was a massive inspiration for me, just like it was for the rest of the lads, it really puts things into perspective,” he said. “I’d already lined up the pie celebration before I’d scored, we’d had a chat about it before the game between the lads, but we wanted to show we
understand how much Doncaster Rovers meant to him and how much it means to his family and friends too. “It was an emotional day, but it was also inspiring for me. We’d all like to thank his family for inviting us down, it was an experience that we shared together, and it made us stronger as a team, and so that result was for him.” Coppinger scored Rovers’ third goal in the 4-1 win at the Banks’s Stadium, and he believes that despite going behind early on the result was never in doubt from the off. “For me it was never in any doubt that the outcome would be any different, we’ve had a great week in training and the way we’ve played in the past few games, so this has been coming for us,” he added. “We’re going into games fully prepared, the intensity in recent weeks both in games and in training has been good, and we’ve used the disappointment from those draws and we’re turning them into wins now. “We have a real never say die attitude, even after going 1-0 down the lads never gave up, we got back into it and won the game comfortably and that shows the change in this group.”

WE SHOULDN’T HAVE LOST, SAYS BOSS Chris Wilder was bitterly disappointed to leave Ashton Gate empty handed on Saturday afternoon. Speaking after seeing Marley Watkins win it for the home side, despite his side creating a host of first-half opportunities, Wilder was understandably frustrated. He remarked: “I’m certain if we’d got the first goal we’d have won the game. “Every manager in the Championship says the same, score first and you win eight out of ten games. “If you score first, the opposition must come out and then you can catch them on the counter.
They brought on players like Watkins, O’Dowda and Taylor, good players in this division and they stretched the game. “It was risk and reward for us once they scored, we had to commit bodies forward and change the shape to try and wrestle back the initiative and for the
majority of the game it was one I didn’t see us losing.” The Blades boss added: “It’s fine margins in Championship football, but we have to be better in those scenarios though. “They got their noses and saw it out well, but if we go one or two in front like we
should have you see a totally different game. “We can talk about individual performances and losing Flecky, but overall we probably just fell a bit short and we’ve lost a tight game, we don’t like that feeling and we must get over it quickly.”
WE’LL BOUNCE BACK, SAYS JOHN The midfieder says the midweek clash against Birmingham City gives the Blades the ideal opportunity to bounce back from Saturday’s loss at Bristol City. John Lundstram says Wednesday’s clash against Birmingham City gives the Blades the ideal opportunity to bounce back from Saturday’s loss at Bristol City. Reflecting on the narrow defeat at Ashton Gate, Lundstram remarked: “It was a tough one to take because we played some good stuff at times and the goal we conceded was a poor one. “It’s disappointing but we quickly move on to Wednesday night now and we have to get Saturday out of our systems.” The midfielder, who replaced the injured John Fleck against the Robins, added: “I wouldn’t say we were comfortable, but we were well in the game and nullified their threats quite well. “But we’ve got to be more clinical at both ends of the pitch, there will be a lot of these tight games this season and although we’re disappointed it shows we’re moving in the right direction. “We’ve got a squad where whoever comes in the team isn’t weakened and going forward we’ll need everyone to contribute.”
RIP IAN MACKENZIE All at Sheffield United FC were saddened to hear of the sudden passing recently of former player Ian Mackenzie. Rotherham-born Mackenzie joined the Blades in 1966 as a Junior before signing professional forms in June 1968, playing as either a defensive midfielder or centre half. He was highly regarded by his team mates and was viewed as a totally professional member of the squad at all times. He competed with John Flynn for a shirt at a time when he and Eddie Colquhoun were very much the first-choice pairing, making most of his first team appearances between December 1971 and May 1973. Mackenzie spent a spell out on loan at Southend United before joining Mansfield Town where he played a key role in the winning of the Third Division Championship in 1977. After retiring from the game he ran a number of pubs before settling in the Lincoln area with his wife and three daughters. Our thoughts are with his wife, children and grandchildren at this sad time”.

SPIRIT, CHARACTER AND DETERMINATION Hard work, attitude and character were the key components of Wednesday salvaging a draw against Stoke, according to Jos Luhukay. During a passionate post-match press conference following the 2-2 draw with the Potters, the Owls boss focused on his players’ determination to claw back a 2-0 deficit. Marco Matias and Barry Bannan obliged to cancel out Benik
Afobe’s brace and earn Wednesday a valuable point. Luhukay said: “If we work as hard as we did today we will not have many problems over the season. “To come from 2-0 down in any game is a good achievement but against a team with the Premier League quality of Stoke City, this is even better. “I think we showed Stoke too much respect
at the start. This is okay before the game but once that first whistle goes, so must the respect. “When we scored to make it 2-1, you could see the players had the belief to get back into the game. “This is the kind of belief I wanted to see from the beginning because I have 100% faith and 100% trust in my squad.” Luhukay went on to

A late goal from Eyad Hammoud saw the Owls Under-18s extend their lead at the top of the table with a 1-0 win over rivals Nottingham Forest. The Middlewood Road clash on Saturday saw league leaders Wednesday face secondplaced Forest in a fiery encounter. valuable point. And the Scot duly extended his excellent start to the season at Hillsborough to sit comfortably at the top of the table. The best performers in the Championship are ranked by Sky Sports based on points awarded for 33 different statistical categories, from goals
keeper Josh Render. Without doubt it was Wednesday’s biggest test of the campaign so far and the hosts grew into the game as the first half unfolded. Jordan O’Brien went close for the Owls just past the half hour mark when latching on to Hammoud’s feed, only to be denied by the goalkeeper when through on goal. After the break, the Owls went through the gears in search of the breakthrough, while limiting Forest to very little in front of goal at the other end. and assists to blocks and tackles. Bannan has amassed 8,625 points, opening a sizeable gap ahead of Bolton’s Josh Magennis on 6,960 in second place. To complete the Wednesday flavour, striker Lucas Joao lies third with 6,664 points.
O’Brien attacked down the left and picked out Hammoud, who controlled, took a touch and fired into the bottom corner from the edge of the box. It was no less than what the Owls youngsters deserved for yet another impressive display and despite Forest’s late pressure, Wednesday saw out the final few moments with little cause for concern. Five wins, one draw, 16 goals scored and just one conceded from the opening six games, as Wednesday extend the lead to four points at the top of the table.
