FULL STEAM AHEAD FOR DONCASTER STATION UPGRADE Plans developed by Doncaster Council and London North Eastern Railway (LNER) to improve Doncaster Railway Station are well underway with work on the next phase of redevelopment starting. Work has begun on creating a new eyecatching canopy on front of the station building. The existing canopy will be demolished to make room for a brand new contemporary glass canopy which will provide a covered walkway to the front of the station and eventually on to the new taxi rank and new car
park on West Street. The existing forecourt in front of the station will be transformed into a high-quality pedestrian area with landscaping and impressive water features. This will vastly improve the current environment making this a focal point and pleasing area in which to arrive into Doncaster. The station is continuing to run as usual during phase 2 of the canopy construction but the North main entrance will be closed for 12 weeks from late September with customers advised to use the South or Frenchgate entrances as an alternative. Once
phase 2 is complete the North entrance will reopen and the South entrance will close for a similar period. As part of the plans to enhance the station, the former Post Office building was demolished last year to make room for a new station car park. In addition, a new access road is to be built which will allow drop off at the station as well as a new station taxi rank. Tim Hedley-Jones, Major Projects Director at LNER, said: “Doncaster is a busy station so we’re really pleased to be working with the council to
improve the experience of those travelling to the area via train. Significant progress has already been made and we’re currently on track to complete the canopy in spring 2019.” Dan Jarvis, Mayor of the Sheffield City Region, said: “It is great to see work start at Doncaster train station to transform it into an attractive and welcoming area for all those visiting, living in and working in our town centre. “I made a commitment to support Doncaster’s Urban Centre Masterplan projects, and the redevelopment of the

train station is a great example of how the town centre is being improved. “I’m delighted that this project has benefited from £7.5 million of Sheffield City Region LEP money, which has come from the Local Growth Fund (LGF). LGF funding allows LEPs to drive forward economic growth across the country, helping to build places that work for everyone.” The plans have been specifically designed to open up Doncaster’s town centre to more visitors and businesses, as well as improve the general atmosphere for residents.
WWW.FACEBOOK.COM/THEMERCURYNEWSPAPER The whole scheme is scheduled to be complete in spring 2020. It is one of a number of major town centre projects helping to deliver the ambitious Urban Centre Masterplan. More information is available at: www. doncaster.gov.uk/ urbanmasterplan The council led redevelopment of the station forecourt is
being carried out in partnership with LNER and the South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive (SYPTE). The scheme will help attract new investment and jobs into Doncaster and the wider region and is benefiting from £7.5 million of Sheffield City Region funding. Local Enterprise Partnerships are playing a vital role in driving
forward economic growth across the country, helping to build a country that works for everyone. That’s why by 2021 Government will have invested over £12 billion through the Local Growth Fund, allowing LEPs to use their local knowledge to get all areas of the country firing on all cylinders.

CYCLE NETWORK IMPROVEMENTS CREATE PEDAL POWER FOR SHEFFIELD Streets Ahead has delivered a series of improvements to cycling paths as part of the overall highway maintenance programme in Sheffield. The vast majority of cycle journeys in the city are now made along main roads using on-road cycle routes where they are present. Speaking of the improvements made, Nick Hetherington, Network Asset Manager says: “We received many complaints when we first started work regarding the
poor state of many of the city’s main roads which were of particular concern to cyclists. The biggest improvement for them has been the resurfacing of those roads, making them smoother and safer for cyclists.” This comes as cyclists across the city have been gearing up for Cycle September – a free competition to see which workplace can encourage the most people to try riding. Organisations from around the world are taking part with national and local leader boards. In South Yorkshire,
2,893 people from 260 organisations, including 586 people new to cycling, have registered for the event which is supported by Sheffield City Council, Move More and The Outdoor City. Cycling is a key priority within the City Centre Masterplan with several projects being rolled out in 2018 including a new cycle hub offering secure public cycle parking and maintenance services modelled on the successful Midland Station cycle hub. The Masterplan also includes proposals

for dedicated Priority Networks for those travelling by bike, six high quality strategic cycle routes across the city centre, improved access across the ring road for cyclists and the linking of key radial cycle routes in the Riverside area. Sheffield is home to a number of cycling groups, clubs and forums. Sheffield has already hosted a number of major cycling events this year including Let’s Ride Sheffield, the 2018 WNT Sheffield Grand Prix, Ride for Eric 2018 and
the final round of the 2018 Sheffield Urban CX Series at Sheffield Olympic Legacy Park. Other events taking place in the city in 2018 include Cycle 300 for Cancer Research, where participants choose their own route and Sheffield Cycling 4 All – cycling for people with disabilities every Tuesday and Thursday up until December 13 in Hillsborough Park.

CELEBRATE OLDER PEOPLES’ DAY - OCTOBER 1ST 2018 Older People’s day highlights the rights of older people as enshrined in Human Rights Legislation. Older people are especially vulnerable to loneliness and social isolation - and it can have a serious effect on health. But there are ways to overcome loneliness, even if you live alone and find it hard to get out. People are living longer and 23% of the UK will be aged 65 and over by 2035. Older People’s Day exists and aims to challenge negative attitudes and outdated stereotypes and focuses on celebrating the achievements and contributions that older people make to our society and the economy. Hundreds of thousands of elderly people are lonely and cut off from society in this country, especially those over the age of 75. According to Age Better in Sheffield, around 16,000 people over 50 in Sheffield are isolated. With your help, we can make Sheffield a city we are all proud to grow old in. People can become socially isolated for a variety of reasons, such as getting older or weaker, no longer being the hub of their family, leaving the workplace, the deaths of spouses and friends, or through disability or illness. Whatever the cause, it’s easy to be left feeling alone and vulnerable, which can lead to depression and a serious decline in physical health and wellbeing. Someone who is lonely probably also finds it hard to reach out. There is a stigma surrounding loneliness, and older people tend not to ask for help because they have too much pride. It’s important to remember loneliness can and does - affect anyone, of any age. Here are ways for older people to connect with others and feel useful and appreciated again. Smile, even if it feels hard Grab every chance to smile at others or begin a conversation - for instance, with the cashier at the shop or the person next to you in the GP waiting room. If you’re shy or not sure what to say, try asking people about themselves. Invite friends for tea If you’re feeling down and alone, it’s tempting to think nobody wants to visit you. But often friends, family and neighbours will
appreciate receiving an invitation to come and spend some time with you. Keep in touch by phone Having a chat with a friend or relative over the phone can be the next best thing to being with them Learn to love computers If your friends and family live far away, a good way to stay in touch, especially with grandchildren, is by using a personal computer or tablet (a handheld computer). You can share emails and photos with family and friends, have free video chats using services such as Skype, FaceTime or Viber, and make new online “friends” or reconnect with old friends on social media sites such as Facebook or Twitter and website forums A tablet computer can be especially useful if you can’t get around very easily, as you can sit with it on your knee or close to hand and the screen is clear and bright. A sponge-tip stylus pen or speech recognition may help if the touchscreen is difficult for arthritic hands or fingers with poor circulation. Libraries and community centres often hold regular training courses for older people to learn basic computer skills - as well as being a good place to meet and spend time with others. Local branches of Age UK run classes in computing to help older people get to grips with smartphones, tablet computers and email. Get some tips and advice on how to become more confident using the internet. Get involved in local community activities It could be a singing or walking group, book clubs, bridge, bingo, quiz nights and faith groups. Fill your diary It can help you feel less lonely if you plan the week ahead and put things in your diary to look forward to each day, such as a walk in the park, going to a local coffee shop, library, sports centre, cinema or museum. Get out and about Don’t wait for people to come and see you travel to visit them. One advantage of being older is that public transport is better value. Local bus travel is free for older people in Sheffield. Help others Use the knowledge and experience you’ve
gained over a lifetime to give something back to your community. You’ll get lots back in return, such as new skills and confidence and, hopefully, some new friends, too. There are endless volunteering opportunities that relish the qualities and skills of older people, such as patience, experience and calmness. Join the University of the Third Age The University of the Third Age (U3A) offers older people the chance to learn or do something new. Run by volunteers, U3A has no exams. Instead, it gives you the chance to do, play or learn something you may never have done before, or something you’ve not considered since your school days. U3A is also a great place to meet people and make new friends. Volunteer with Age Better in Sheffield Why not help end isolation and loneliness together? With an estimated 16,000 older people in Sheffield over the age of 50 at risk of being isolated or lonely, it’s going to take a joint effort across the city to make a difference. We are particularly looking for volunteers over the age of 50, but have opportunities for those who are younger too. For volunteers over 50 Start Up – want to set up your own project to end isolation? Get involved with Start Up! For volunteers of any age Community journalists–volunteers interested in creating content for the Neighbourhood toolkit. #proudtoask – do you have contact with older people as a part of your job? Volunteer as a business or an individual to spread the word and refer people you meet to Age Better in Sheffield. SHEFFIELDER’S LEGACY KEEPING FAMILIES TOGETHER The son of a local Yorkshire businessman who founded Eckersley House, a ‘Home from Home’ at Leeds Children’s Hospital run by The Sick Children’s Trust, is encouraging the community to join in with celebrating the house supporting over 11,000 families for 25 years. Mark Eckersley, 60, from Dore, Sheffield, is the son of Robert ‘Bob’ Eckersley, who passed away from cancer and in his legacy, Bob wanted to ensure that families with seriously ill children undergoing hospital treatment far away from home didn’t have to leave their loved one’s hospital bedside. Tragically, he experienced these difficulties when his eldest son, Guy, passed away at just 12 years old, having spent a prolonged period of time in hospital. Years later, Bob’s stepson, Simon, was admitted to Leeds for lifesaving treatment which meant he and his family had to travel miles to be with him. As a result, Eckersley House was founded by Bob’s family in his name following his passing.
The ‘Home from Home’ – which was originally located at St James’s University Hospital but has been based at Leeds General Infirmary since 2010 – supports families with seriously ill children who require specialist treatment in Leeds. This year, The Sick Children’s Trust celebrates 25 years of supporting families at Eckersley House. Eckersley House has 22 family bedrooms, eight bathrooms, three fully equipped kitchens and communal areas, three playrooms, three shared living rooms and laundry facilities. It also has a self-contained flat for when a child is recovering from a liver transplant and within all rooms there is a direct telephone line to the ward. Although the accommodation is provided free to families, The Sick Children’s Trust relies entirely on voluntary donations to support around 4,000 families across its ‘Homes from Home’ every year. Mark said: “As a family, we are very dedicated to Eckersley House. We will always be eternally grateful to The Sick Children’s Trust for running Eckersley House over the last 25
years and supporting over 11,000 families with children undergoing lifesaving treatment at Leeds Children’s Hospital” The Sick Children’s Trust runs ten ‘Homes from Home’ across the country, three of which are based in Yorkshire. Alongside Eckersley House, the charity has two ‘Homes from Home’ supporting families at Sheffield Children’s Hospital – Treetop and Magnolia Houses. Jane McHale, Eckersley House Manager, says: “From everyone at The Sick Children’s Trust and on behalf of all the families we support, we’d like to say a huge thank you to all of Bob’s family for founding Eckersley House. Over the years, Eckersley House has been there for thousands of families whose lives get thrown into complete turmoil when their child is diagnosed with a life-threatening illness or involved in a serious accident, and we hope it will continue to be there for even more families in the coming years.” For further information about The Sick Children’s Trust, please visit www.sickchildrenstrust.org/

DAPHNE’S FLIGHT With a complete line-up of all five original members and a brand new studio album, this is the tour that fans have been waiting for since their first impromptu performance at Cambridge festival in 1995, when they took a packed club tent by storm and decided the time was right to join forces. Drawing on their collective wealth of talent and varied styles, each of them accomplished songwriters, musicians and renowned singers, it was the combination of all five voices, a powerhouse of harmonies, that left audiences breathless and brought them much critical acclaim. As well as the many original songs they each brought to the group, they breathed new life into classic contemporary covers from The Beach Boys to The Beatles, Bill Withers to Randy Newman and anyone who saw Daphne’s Flight live will tell you their version of E.C. Ball’s ‘Father Adieu’ was the stuff of musical legend! With as much energy and enthusiasm as they ever had, Daphne’s are truly excited to be reuniting again and hope you will join them in the next leg of the flight for what promises to be a memorable year. Chocks away!

THEIR TRADEMARK DARK & QUIRKY HUMOUR LIVE REVIEW The League Of Gentlemen Sheffield City Hall
Morphing into comedy legends, Britain’s icon gang The League Of Gentlemen, Mark Gatiss, Steve Pemberton, Reece Shearsmith, and Jeremy Dyson have hit the road again as their 47 date stage show hit Sheffield’s City Hall for three nights. With a prompt 7:30pm start an off stage
announcer said the chaps would be late starting due to traffic problems, (a wee fib), and for the next 45 minutes the main three, all dressed in smart diner suits, did a series of sketches, monologues and the odd song with nothing but tables and chairs for props. Most of this material was from the very start of the BAFTA award-winner’s careers which die-hard fans lapped up. With the thirty minute intermission over part
two was more modern with the Wife Mine sketch quite a feature as this was where last year’s televised show ended. Interspersed with this was Toddy Bingo, Pauline running through the crowd to great cheers as she and the others did a funny funeral routine, complete with back-drop video inserts. We also had the wonderful Local Shop for Local People scene, and of course quite a bit of innuendos, a League Of Gentlemen trademark.
Yes, some of the earlier material went over my head as although I was once an Extra in an early episode it’s the last couple of series that have really hit home. As with wine, the humour and stage craft has risen to another level which some may like and others may not. One thing’s certain, The League Of Gentlemen have talent by the bucket load, performed their socks off throughout and come closing time were rewarded with a huge standing ovation from the packed City Hall, with everyone agreeing we’d seen a premiership show. If you like your humour slightly dark and at times off the wall then these talented funny men will do it for you time and again. And if nothing else, this huge countrywide tour will have done global DVD sales no harm whatsoever.

BBQ PATIO H & EAT GAS FOR ER SALE
Drivers who hog the middle lane have been made the subject of a police crackdown in the south of England. Officers from Thames Valley Police recently pulled over five offenders in just one night in an attempt to stamp out the irritating, but often overlooked, road rule contravention. Offenders were then publicly shamed on Twitter, including one motorist who remained in the middle lane for over seven miles, between Junction 4 (Heathrow) and Junction 6 (Slough Central/Windsor). Another careless driver stayed in the middle lane between Junction 5 (Slough) and Junction 4, forcing others to use the outside lane to overtake. When it comes to lane hogging, the Highway Code states: “You should always drive in the left-hand lane when the road ahead is clear.
“If you are overtaking a number of slow-moving vehicles, you should return to the left-hand lane as soon as you are safely past.” Changing lanes is sometimes seen as one of the more dangerous motorway manoeuvres, spurring some motorists to stay in the middle lane to avoid having to ‘weave’ between other vehicles. But the frustrating habit makes overtaking harder, as it funnels drivers into the outside lane, leading to congestion. Middle-lane hogging is classified as a ‘careless driving’ offence, along with tailgating and being distracted by eating and drinking behind the wheel. New laws were introduced back in 2013 which gave police officers the power to hand out three penalty points and £100 on-the-spot fines to offenders. The five drivers were stopped by Thames Valley Police between Sunday night (September 16) and the early hours of Monday morning (September 17) on the M4.

ANGLER’S CORNER
with Clint Walker
I was going sea fishing this week… We had a trip booked, I’d bought new tackle, ordered the appropriate bait, and was all set for an early start to travel to Fleetwood in Lancashire to board the boat with some friends, and enjoy a day at sea; lovely. Then it was cancelled. The day before. I know a sea fishing trip is always at the mercy of the weather, but I was especially disappointed to miss out on this one, so disappointed in fact, I went fishing to get over it! In truth, the bad news arrived just as I pulled up at the lake in search of a few carp. I’d just got out of the van when the phone pinged, so was in a foul mood as I barrowed my stuff across to the waterside. In the holdall, I’d got a couple of rods which needed to be photographed, so silently set them up, mixed some groundbait, attached a method feeder and positioned the bait. Still feeling fed up, I set the camera on its tripod, then watched as the bobbin flew up, the alarm squealed, and the first carp of the day was hooked. Good. I could get some ‘rod bending’ shots, then pack up and go home to sulk… A double figure mirror hit the mat, which was quickly followed by a similarly sized common, then another mirror. I decided to stay until I’d used up my bowl of bait, so continued to drop the method feeder in, and pick off fish after fish. With the exception of a couple of bream, I landed nothing but double figure carp. It may be a little presumptuous to say so, but my life… it was boring fishing! I
definitely felt as though I had returned to my recent rut, so the following day, I decided to try a completely new club lake. Black Lake is a small secluded pool set amongst farmland. Its quiet, tree lined, and looks ‘right’. I had little idea what may reside within, however I had noted a few bream pictured on social media, so set up a cage feeder, slipped on a pre-tied hooklink with a size 16 hook, and added a couple of maggots. My groundbait was Spotted Fin Carp Super Blend, a general purpose mix which is easy to get right, and to which I added a handful of Catalyst pellets (bream love pellets!) and a small amount of hemp to cover all bases. A few quick casts got some bait in, and I dropped a baited rig on the spot to see what would find it and sat back to enjoy a brew. After an hour, a barely perceptible quiver of my sensitive carbon tip alerted me to my first bite, which proved to be a roach of an ounce or so, not big, but at least it was progress. The weather soon turned from bright and sunny to much colder with a brisk wind rippling the lake, and after overnight rain, I wondered if I was going to catch much else. A second bite saw a perch of matching proportions to the roach, so that was two fish for two ounces… match winner! I kept plugging away, casting every ten minutes to keep the bait going in, and eventually I got a much better bite; the slow pull of a bream, and a fish of around two pounds came to the net. The next cast bought the same result, as did the next half a dozen, as bream after bream tripped up over the hook bait. It was soon time for another brew, and as I reached down to top up my mug, out of the corner of my eye, I noted the ‘tip fly around and the rod was wrenched off the rest!

Kicking my tea everywhere, I grabbed the rod, and felt a much better fish. My light 3lb hook link was going to be well stretched during this fight, but luckily, my clutch was set to slip early…just in case! I gently played the carp to the net, and was delighted to find a beautifully dark, plump fish of around six pounds on the mat which had fought far harder than its modest weight might suggest! I sat for about four hours, slowly getting colder as the autumn weather blew wind and rain at me, before a phone call suggested a visit to McDonalds with my grandsons; an infinitely more attractive proposition… I loaded the van, happy with a few nice fish from an unknown water, especially after witnessing another angler turn up, fish for less than an hour without a bite and pack up again, so I gathered I must have been doing something right. I’ll return again I think, as I’ve also heard rumours of pike, but for now, I’m looking forward to a trip abroad again, though without a fishing rod unfortunately, but I need something to cheer me after a cancelled sea fishing trip! I’ll be back soon, so tight lines until then…

Autumn appears to be in full swing in the South Yorkshire region this week – the stormy weather and the 1st Round of the County Senior League Cup. There were also a small number of league fixtures to make sure no-one missed out. League Cup 1st Round Premier Division leaders Dodworth Miners Welfare carried their outstanding league form into the cup, as they beat Millmoor Juniors 15-2. Dodworth have won all eight of their games in all competitions thus far this season. Burngreave of Division One have also won all of their games this season, and on Saturday beat Denaby United of the Premier Division 8-0 at Firvale Academy. Musa Mohamed (3), Faisal Nadeem (4) and Hilmi Qasim were all on target for Burngreave. Goals from Ross Brown, Oliver Glaves, Alex Torr, Charles Tunnard and Oliver CockbillBlack gave Oughtibridge WMSC a 5-2 home win over fellow Premier Division outfit Hepworth United. A brace from Adam Kennedy helped Denaby Mian to a 3-2 victory over fellow Division One side Houghton Main at the M-Tec Stadium. There were three all Division Two ties in the 1st Round. AFC Dronfield saw-off New Bohemians 4-3 in a thriller at Gosforth Fields. Wombwell Town booked their place in the 2nd Round with an impressive 4-0 win over Division Two league leaders Stocksbridge Park Steels Development at the Look Local Stadium. Swinton Athletic Reserves were also big winners, with a 6-1 away win over Thurcroft Miners Institute, a side they drew 3-3 with in the league just three weeks ago. United Worksop had their first ever game in the County Senior League Cup, as they hosted South Kirkby Colliery at Manton Athletic Sports Club. Sadly for them they fell to a 5-2 defeat to the Premier Division outfit. There was no shock at the Goodwin Sports
Centre, as Jubilee Sports of the Premier Division defeated Sheffield Union of Division Two 4-1 to make the second round draw. Premier Division North Gawber Colliery moved to within three points of league leaders Dodworth, as they beat Frecheville 2-1 at Davy Sports Club. The two sides meet for the first time next weekend at Woolley Miners Welfare. Grimethorpe Sports made Handsworth Parramore Reserves’ start to the season more problematic by beating them 5-1 at Oliver’s Mount. The win takes Grimethorpe into fifth position, with Handsworth at the foot-of-thetable. High Green Villa picked up their second victory of the season, with a hard-fought 2-1 win over Penistone Church Reserves at the Memorial Ground. Goals from Rodney Bruce, Luke Townsend and Oliver Warren were enough to give Stocksbridge Park Steels Reserves a 3-2 home win against Wombwell Main. Division One With the top two not in league action, AFC Dronfield had the opportunity to climb within two points of the lead. And that they did, as they beat Sheffield Medics 4-1 at Gosforth Fields. Brinsworth Whitehill claimed their first win of the season, with a 4-0 home win over Caribbean Sports. Kiveton Park were held to a 3-3 draw at home by Hemsworth Miners Welfare Reserves. Kiveton remain winless this season (six games played) but have drawn four of those. Sheffield Bankers moved into a mid-table position, as they beat Wombwell Main Reserves 3-1 away from home. Division Two There was just one game in Division Two, with Ardsley Athletic Juniors hosting Dodworth Miners Welfare Reserves at Netherwood ALC. Goals from brothers Liam Egan and Joe Egan settled to game 2-0 in Ardlsey’s favour.

WARNE - WE DESERVED MORE MILLERS chief Paul Warne was adamant that his side were worth a share of the spoils, as Lewis Grabban’s late penalty saw the Millers slip to a heart breaking last-gasp defeat at the hands of Nottingham Forest. Warne’s side looked well set to secure their first away point of their Championship campaign following a hard-working display at the City Ground but Grabban came back to haunt his former side – with the decisive goal from the spot, with just four minutes to go. Speaking to the assembled media afterwards, Warne was frustrated that his side were not duly rewarded for their backs-to-the-wall performance – which saw the highly-rated hosts frustrated for large periods of the game. “I thought we were excellent. I was really pleased,” the Millers boss enthused. “We set up the right way I thought. I’m not even sure that Forest had a shot on target today. Out of possession, we asked the lads to do a lot and we frustrated them and on the counter-attack, we looked really dangerous. “If I’m honest I felt really comfortable throughout the game and I think we more than deserved a point.”

MCCANN PRAISES ROVERS RESILIENCE Manager Grant McCann praised his side’s resilience following their third consecutive win in Sky Bet League One after a 2-1 win over Bradford City. John Marquis scored a goal either side of the break to put Rovers two goals ahead, despite a late scare from the Bantams he was happy to

With chances few and far between for both sides, Rotherham weathered an early Forest storm at the start of the second half – with Joao Carvalho smashing a point-blank effort against the foot of the post. Warne’s side gradually grew in confidence and they came close to breaking the deadlock when Kyle Vassell was inches away from turning home sub Michael Smith’s cross before Richie Towell brought the best out of Costel Pantilimon with a rising effort. With the game meandering to a draw, there was a cruel twist for the Millers when Williams was penalised for felling Ben Osborn in the box and Grabban coolly stepped up to deny the Millers any reward for their efforts – to the disappointment of the Millers chief. “It’s difficult to take at the moment but I said to the lads that if you play like that every week, you will make everyone at the club proud,” Warne added. “If you come away from home and perform like that then you are going to pick up points and the win will come sooner than later. “I’m proud of how they performed and that’s my overall feeling. One mistake has cost us. “I haven’t seen (the penalty) back. At the time we were screaming because I saw him running on the blind side of Willo. I don’t know but I thought Willo got a part of the ball but realistically, if that was up the other end, would I want that as a penalty kick, yes I would so I’ve got no complaints with the penalty. “The lads do not make errors on purpose and I’m going to support them fully because their effort was excellent. “The lads have given me everything and I feel sorry for them that have come away with nothing because our overall performance was good today.” see his side dig out another victory. “On the whole I think we deserved the win, it doesn’t matter how you play though really, the only thing that matters is the result at full-time, we had some really good spells where we dominated, but then others where we had to dig in,” he said. “We knew beforehand that it would be a tough game for us, their style of play is relentless, their centre-halves caused us real problems in breaking them down at times, but we were brave in our play and managed to grind out another result. “We should have scored more than just the two though, Mallik Wilks has had great chances either side of the break, then we ended up making it tougher for ourselves towards the end by conceding late on, but we’ve stuck at it and got the win.” McCann’s men are now six games unbeaten in the league, and the manager believes his side have come a long way since his arrival in South Yorkshire. “This group has come such a long way in such a short space of time, we’ve had a tough start to the season so far, and we’ve managed to come through that in a good position, we’re going along nicely and let’s hope it continues,” he added. “The work rate, the attitude and the way the boys go about their everyday business has been brilliant, in training every day they’re a pleasure to work with, and that helps when it’s like that, they’re a group that want to learn and want to get better. “They’ve shown that they’ve all grown as players since I arrived, they’re taking on the messages that we’re putting across to them really well, and they’re setting really high standards, it really shows how far they’ve come.”

ANDREW IMPRESSED BY STANDARDS Danny Andrew says the standards Rovers have set for themselves hold them in good stead for the rest of the season. The 27-year-old was defensively solid in Rovers’ 2-1 victory over Bradford City at the Keepmoat Stadium, and Andrew praised the impact that forward John Marquis had on the affair. “We have set some high standards for ourselves this season, we are only nine games into the season but you can see by where we are in the table the kind of standards we have set,” he said.
“If we continue to hit those kind of standards throughout the season, who knows what can happen, and we did well to get over the line and get the three points. “John has scored two great goals, the first was a great strike and has found the top corner, as long as he is scoring he’s happy.” Andrew has played almost every minute in Sky Bet League One this season, and says he is enjoying the attacking intent Grant McCann has the side playing with. “I love the formation we play, I know I can speak for Niall Mason as well when I say this, we both love getting forward and if we can chip in with a few goals and assists this season, we will do well,” he said. “I was disappointed last season as I obviously only managed to play six games before my season was over but at the minute I feel good. “I think when you win three on the bounce you can’t not be confident, however there isn’t an arrogance about us, we go out there and work hard every week.”

WILDER HAILS CHARACTER The Blades boss was frustrated his side had to win it twice, but proud they did. Chris Wilder was understandably pleased with Saturday’s deserved victory over Preston North End, despite a second-half scare at Bramall Lane. Speaking after seeing his side move up to fourth in the table with the win over the Lilywhites, Wilder felt his side were good value for the success, with David McGoldrick netting the decisive goal. He remarked: “We had a difficult ten minute spell and we let the opposition back into the game, but I’m not surprised by the reaction of my players to win it again. “We lost our shape
and a bit of discipline again towards the end, but it isn’t possible to press like we do for 90 minutes, I was delighted with the performance for the first 70. “We were outstanding, we created numerous chances and got to the byline with most attacks, credit to
Preston for defending their goal like they did.” Wilder added: “At 2-0 it’s a score where you always need another goal to kill the game off and we had opportunities to do so, but they showed spirit and fight and got back into it. “It’s been a difficult
week, we deserved something from a long trip to Bristol, in midweek I possibly made too many changes and that affected our fluency. “So to end it with three points having recovered from the setback of being pegged back is very pleasing.”
FRUSTRATING DEFEAT FOR U18S
United’s Under 18s fell to a frustrating 4-1 defeat against Bolton Wanderers despite creating more than enough chances to get a result from the game. An Eddie Brown hat-trick was the catalyst for Bolton’s victory whilst United were reduced to a Sam Ackroyd penalty after missing several chances to get back in the match. Tom Weaver should have headed United in front from George Broadbent’s free-kick after ten minutes and Bolton soon went down the other end and punished the Blades, something that soon became the story of the game. Neat play from the Bolton attack saw Brown played in and his low finish was enough to beat Dewhurst into the corner. Three minutes later and it was 2-0, Brown again the man on target. This time going on his own, Brown cut in from the left and once again fired another low effort into the corner of the net. United responded and could have scored three or four in the final ten minutes of the half, Ackroyd scoring a penalty after Weaver’s header back across goal was handled by a Bolton defender. Three chances then went begging before the break with the lively Harry Boyes involved in all of them down the left. Boyes himself fired a low effort into the side netting before his whipped in cross was headed wide at the back post by Tom Williams. Boyes then set up Zak Brunt who curled an effort past the far post and Ackroyd headed wasn’t really relief, towards the end and in wide Broadbent’s free-kick at the end of the but we were a bit this division players half. disappointed that can hurt you, they did The second half was less eventful and more we’ve not made it a that and scored twice frustrating, substitute Laurence Smith firing lot more comfortable. in two minutes. home from close range with 20 minutes to go “Preston are “It was my little boy’s to reinstate Bolton’s two-goal advantage. struggling at the birthday so it was nice Despite plenty of pressure, Brown wrapped up bottom of the table his hat-trick with five minutes to go as United to notch for him and and they are fighting pressed forward looking for a route back into even better to head for a result, but in the the match. end we’re delighted to one home at the Kop end. DOUBLE DELIGHT FOR BASH Chris Basham had more than one reason to celebrate following United’s dramatic victory over Preston North End at the weekend. Basham headed home his first of the season at the beginning of the second-half and dedicated it postmatch to his son Luca, who turned four at the weekend. But the versatile
performer admit the Blades had to show character having been pegged back with eight minutes remaining. He commented: “If it could have been fulltime on 70 minutes it would have been a comfortable win, but we’ve had to work hard and show character to get three points. “We came off and it

WE CAN ACHIEVE GREAT THINGS Owls manager Jos Luhukay praised his players’ team spirit following their impressive 2-1 victory against Aston Villa at Villa Park. Marco Matias and
Steven Fletcher trumped a John McGinn volley to take all three points back to Sheffield after a hardworking team performance. Luhukay said: “I am very happy with the team
to come here and win. “Aston Villa are a good team and a big club, so we are pleased with this result.
“The thing that impressed me most from
the players is their team spirit. “This is the third game in seven days and the work rate and the combinations were very good. “This is I would say the best performance since I have been here with Sheffield Wednesday. “When we play like this,
we can achieve great things.” The Dutchman now wants to regroup for the build-up to next Friday’s Yorkshire derby against Leeds and hopes the win at Villa will spur the team forward. He added: “Now that we have this win, I want the players to push on even
further. “Next week we have Leeds and then West Brom just a few days later and I want the players to show what they can do. “We have a good squad with players coming back from injury and we have Fernando Forestieri coming back from suspension. “Maybe we can ask the referee next week to play with 12 or 13 players.”
A BIG RESULT FOR US Steven Fletcher gave praise to his team mates after a fantastic display at Villa Park on Saturday. In a game that manager Jos Luhukay described as the club’s best performance since he took charge back in January, Fletcher bagged the winning goal to seal a deserved three points. But the Owls did not have it all their own way in a pulsating Championship clash, with John McGinn levelling in style following Marco Matias’ opener. After the Scot struck a goal of the season contender for the Villans, Wednesday held

firm in the storm that followed, regrouped and took charge once more at Villa Park. Fletcher said: “It’s a big result for us and we worked hard to achieve it, it was important for us to bounce back after midweek and the boys did really well. “They had a few chances after they got their goal so that gave them confidence but we rode it out for a
while, stood firm and got our chance and I managed to take one. “I did think the goal was never going to come but I was glad to get on the end of it. “We have got a young squad, we are building on each game and taking each one as it comes. “The young lads are doing fantastic and we’ll see where we can go.”
TALENT BEYOND HIS YEARS
and after another outstanding display in the Owls’ rearguard at Villa Park, Luhukay said: “He has been fantastic in that left back position. “He plays with no fear, he is not afraid and he is a very good player for us. I am so happy with him. “It was a decision we made last Wednesday to rest him with three games so close, Stoke City, Nottingham Forest and Aston Villa. “With what we have coming with Leeds and West Brom, we need him but we must remember he is very early into his career and must go very careful with him. “He played a very good game at Aston Villa.”
“I have the feeling really that he has been a first 11 player for the last ten years...” A glowing endorsement of Matt Penney from Owls boss Jos Luhukay following the defender’s superb start the season. The 20-year-old made his debut in the EFL Cup victory away at Sunderland and his full debut in the victory over Millwall at Hillsborough back in August. Penney’s transition to first team football has certainly caught the eye
