smokefree city council from oct 1st Changes to Sheffield City Council’s smoke free policy and the new vaping policy take effect from today (1 October) for all employees, customers, visitors, contractors, volunteers and members of the public while on council premises. The policies now state that smoking and vaping is not permitted on any Council premises including within grounds, courtyards, at entranceways, car parks, depots, or on any approach to any Council buildings. Smoking and vaping are not permitted in areas across from council buildings where the effects of smoke may be harmful to others or

unpleasant to others. Harm to bystanders from exposure to e-cigarette vapour and the risks to their health are likely to be extremely low however the council’s vaping policy takes in to account that some people find e-cigarette vapour unpleasant. Councillor Mary Lea said: “It is our ambition to have a smokefree generation by 2025 – a future where no-one can remember the last time they knew someone who started smoking . We have a responsibility to protect the health of our employees as well as the health of Sheffield’s population as a whole and as one of the largest

organisations and employers in the city it is absolutely right that we lead the way with our smokefree policy. We are supporting colleagues through the changes and offering help to those who want to stop smoking or switch to vaping.”The council has introduced the changes to help protect the health of its employees and residents and make its workplaces more pleasant, healthier environments for everyone. Greg Fell, Director of Public Health, said: “We want to help and support our employees who smoke to quit or switch to vaping and support them. Tobacco causes serious

harm to health and kills 16 people a week in Sheffield. We know it is a difficult addiction to overcome but quitting smoking is the best thing you can do to improve your health.” The polices have been developed based on the current best evidence and practice from Public Health England which now recommends that separate policies are in place to ensure the distinction between vaping and smoking is clear. . No smoking or vaping sings have been put up outside council buildings. Other organisations in Sheffield that are also launching or have already introduced Smokefree

policies: •Sheffield Teaching Hospitals Trust •Sheffield Social Care •Sheffield Hallam University •Sheffield Children’s Hospital Smokefree Sheffield brings the city’s tobacco control board partners and local services together under one umbrella and has been set up to help smokers, non-smokers, quitters and the whole community work towards a future without tobacco. Ahead of a 13-date arena tour in March 2019, the City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra, along with conductor Matthew Freeman, have been announced to provide the live accompaniment to the stunning visuals of Blue Planet II – Live In Concert. Bringing the wonders and mysteries of the planet’s oceans and its inhabitants to the UK arena stage, Blue Planet II – Live In Concert will present a selection of incredible visuals from the BAFTA Award winning BBC One landmark series, highlighting the amazing natural wonders of our blue planet in breath-taking detail, projected on a giant state of the art 4K Ultra HD LED screen. Accompanied by the original immersive music score by Bleeding Fingers Music, composed by Hans Zimmer, Jacob Shea and David Fleming, the concert will be performed live by the City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra, and conducted by Matthew Freeman. Hans Zimmer says of composing the music for Blue Planet II – “The idea is to depict the abundance of life as well as the movements and vibrations of the ocean. By using the orchestra in an unconventional way, we wanted to create ‘living’ chords that ebb and flow throughout the series”. (Hans Zimmer) Matthew Freeman adds: “With the winning combination of a live symphony orchestra of 80 musicians and some of the most stunning underwater images ever seen, Blue Planet II Live in Concert brings together inspirational visuals with magnificent original music. It’s a moving experience and a privilege to conduct this unique concert.”(Matthew Freeman, Conductor, Blue Planet II Live In Concert) Matthew Freeman is an award-winning conductor, arranger and pianist who has conducted the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra on various occasions around the world. travellers short-changed by new passport rules Travellers who are renewing their passports are now getting up to nine months’ less validity, after an under-theradar change to Passport Office rules, MoneySavingExpert revealed last week. Their findings are below:After initially refusing to comment, the Government has now confirmed the rules have been changed, as part of a raft of announcements on Brexit preparations. Until last month, when you renewed your passport, any time left on your existing document would be added to your new one, up to a maximum of nine months. Those who have renewed their passports in the past few weeks have been shocked to find this is no longer the case. They have had reports from at least four MoneySavers caught out by the change, and the Passport Office’s customer service number on Wednesday were infroming callers a new policy had come in from Monday 10 September and validity is no longer being carried forward. The Home Office on Wednesday refused to officially confirm there had been any change in policy, but documents released a day later explained the change has been made as part of preparations for the UK to leave the European Union. The news will come as a particular blow to travellers as some countries require you to have up to six months’ validity left on your passport when visiting. UK passports are usually valid for 10 years, but if you’re travelling to a country, which requires you to enter with validity remaining on your passport, you may have no choice but to renew early. MoneySavingExpert founder Martin Lewis said: “The biggest problem with this is many countries do not let you in if you’ve less than six months on your passport. In

fact, we’ve heard some stories of people being sent home because a child’s passport is too close to expiry. This change of policy will lead many people to renew later so they can scrape out every last month of their passport. But of course, that runs the risk of many more people being sent back home. The fact it looks like the Government has chosen to do this without notifying people and put such a big change in place hoping to sneak it under the radar is plain wrong. This change affects price, because in effect passports will now only last nine and a half years. But it also runs the risk of more people being sent home, ruining holidays and putting many people in a worrying situation. Also, because of the timing which effectively means this shortening will take place over the Brexit period, it’s likely we’ll see an even bigger build-up of demand before next summer, when there are already long waiting times.” How have the passport rules changed? Until last week the rules have stated that when you renew your passport, any time left on your existing passport is added to your new one, up to a maximum of nine months. So if your current passport was due to expire on 1 March 2019, and you renewed it now, your new passport would still expire on 1st March 2029. However, under the new rules this no longer applies and any existing months will be lost if you renew early. So if your current passport was due to expire on 1 March 2019 and you renewed now, your passport would only be valid until September 2028, rather than March 2029. Why have the rules changed? Documents published on Thursday suggest the changes are part of preparations for a no-deal Brexit. After 29th March 2019, if the UK leaves the

European Union without a deal, Brits will be considered ‘third country nationals’ under rules used in the Schengen area - an area made up of 26 European countries that have officially abolished passport and all other types of border control at their borders. Being ‘third country nationals’ means we will need to comply with different rules to enter and travel around the Schengen area. According to the Schengen Border Code, if you are from a ‘third country’, you need to have a passport issued in the last 10 years in order to travel to a Schengen country - and under the old rules, where time left on your passport was added to your new one, not everyone with a valid UK passport would have had their passport issued within the past ten years. How can they do this overnight? If you renew your passport before it expires you’ll now lose any validity it had left on it - a new passport will always last ten years (or five if it’s for a child). So from a MoneySaving point of view it’s tempting to leave it as late as possible to renew. Yet in practice, this is likely to only save £3-£4 at most, and you should do this only if you are absolutely certain that you won’t need your passport in the meantime. The risk here is that you may find you don’t have enough validity remaining on your passport to enter a country you need to travel to. Some countries require six months - the Foreign Office has full info on what different countries’ requirements are. So if there’s any chance at all you may need to travel or have a certain amount of validity remaining on your passport, make sure you renew BEFORE it becomes an issue. Otherwise you may end up having to do an urgent renewal, which will cost more and easily cancel out any possible savings you might have made from waiting.

To lend their support, sports clubs can: • Make sure they tell parents what they can do if they have a concern, such as calling the NSPCC helpline • Be open with parents about what their child needs from them in relation to their behaviour. • Use our resources to engage with parents, help to support their child and raise awareness of the impact parental involvement can have on youth sport. For more information about Parents in Sport Week, and for downloadable resources for both parents and clubs, visit the CPSU website.

matthew halsall comes to sheffield the human league are coming home! Manchester based composer, arranger, to internationally renowned talent such as producer, DJ and band-leader Matthew Halsall has carved out a niche for himself as one of the UK’s brightest talents. His languid, soulful, beautiful music has won international acclaim and his compositions draw from many sources, the classic sounds of British jazz, the spiritual jazz of Alice Coltrane and Pharoah Sanders and the more contemporary sounds of bands such as The Cinematic Orchestra or Boards of Canada. It’s a unique sound that The Independent on Sunday memorably described as “Rainstreaked spiritual jazz from Manchester.” and Time Out London as “‘Kind of Blue’ meets The Cinematic Orchestra …”. His label, Gondwana Records, originally established to record local talent, celebrates its 10th Anniversary this year and is home

Dwight Trible, Portico Quartet, Phil France and Mammal Hands, as well as exciting new talents such as Caoilfhionn Rose and Allysha Joy. These rare UK shows feature Matthew Halsall & The Gondwana Orchestra (pianist Taz Modi, bassist Gavin Barras, drummer Jon Scott, harpist Rachael Gladwin and special guest Chip Wickham on flute and saxophone. Expect to hear music from Halsall’s acclaimed back catalogue including the albums On the Go, When the World Was One and Into Forever, as well as exciting new compositions. Matthew is appearing at Abbeydale Picture House on Wednesday 10th October.

‘A hilarious and heartfelt celebration of the life and songs of one of this country’s finest and funniest wordsmiths. Highly entertaining whether you are discovering Jake for the first time, or an ardent fan.’ The late Jake Thackray is being increasingly acknowledged as one of the greatest English songwriters of the twentieth century, a unique talent, whose songs are full of poetry, wit, irreverence and humanity. His intelligent and hilarious lyrics, talent for storytelling, clever wordplay, occasional, artful use of vulgarity and surreal imagination delighted many viewers and outraged some. Since his death in 2002 there has been growing recognition of his genius and a resurgence of interest in his work. His admirers include Jarvis Cocker, Alex Turner, Don Black, Thea Gilmore, Cerys Matthews, Benjamin Clementine and Neil Gaiman.

Tyre Safety Month is an annual campaign promoted by TyreSafe to spread awareness of the importance of looking after your tyres. This year, TyreSafe launched an investigation in to tyre pressures and uncovered some surprising findings! Did You Know Tyre pressure affects the way that your vehicle handles and therefore affects your safety on the road. When a tyre is correctly inflated to manufacturer’s specification it will make optimal contact with the surface of

the road which enables maximum grip. If a tyre is under-inflated the intended contact patch of the tyre will not maintain contact, meaning that gripping capabilities, braking distances and road holding will be affected. Under-inflated tyres require more momentum to move and this means that your engine has to work harder, increasing your fuel consumption. In addition to affecting your safety on the road, tyres which are not correctly inflated will wear more rapidly as the tread comes in

uneven contact with the road, causing excess wear on the tyre sidewall and making them more prone to damage as excess friction is produced between tyre and road. TyreSafe Results In their 2017 campaign, TyreSafe looked at tyre pressure and the impacts incorrectly inflated tyres have on our roads, our safety and our bank balances! In this study TyreSafe found: • 35% of tyres in the UK are being driven at least 8psi below the vehicle manufacturer recommendation

• 3% more fuel is used when pressure is 6psi below the recommended pressure • £600 million per year is wasted on fuel costs by British motorists driving with underinflated tyres • For every 10% a tyre is under-inflated its wear increases by up to 10% These results prove that by simply checking your tyre pressure every three weeks you could reduce your fuel consumption and lower the risk of being in an accident on the road.

Angler’s Corner

One of the joys of lure fishing is the ability to travel light and cover a fair bit of distance. After two hours of casting with Clint Walker though, I’d got a bit of back ache Something different for me this week, (arthritis), so retired once more to the van and it’s in pursuit of something I’ve for more tea and to reconsider my options. thought about getting around to I’ve done well for perch using the Ecogear for a while… I love my lure fishing, Paramax lure in the past, particularly the it’s quick, easy and fun, but despite 3” pink option, so decided to see if the catching chub, trout, pike and perch swimming action would prove enough to with some regularity, the zander has so provoke a reaction as I went back over the far eluded me, so I was determined to same areas. I locked up the van, and went find some! back to work… I set out fairly early, keen to miss the The 3g jig head was easily heavy enough morning rush hour to head for a spot to reach about 35 yards, so I made a which needed a drive of at least an hour. start in covering the water with a series I won’t divulge where, as I know that the of casts in a fan shape to try and hunt zander is still misunderstood by some over as much as possible. Changes in anglers, blamed (unfairly in my opinion) retrieve rates, a change of depth, and even for a lack of silver fish in venues across allowing the lure to rest on the bottom the UK, and harvested by the Canal and bought little more than an odd ‘nip’ so I River Trust for profit. Frankly, I, and began to cast along the bank, hoping that many other anglers I know, are constantly appalled by the indiscriminate culling and fish would be laying close in. Wham! removal of these fine fish from waterways Working the lure close in certainly gave a result when a fish slammed into it within by the so-called custodians of our sport, a few feet of the bank, and after gently and I was even more astonished to find guiding it to the net, I was delighted to that if they cannot be rehomed, then they find a zander of a couple of pounds safely are sold for food to top restaurants; not nestled within! Excellent! much incentive to look very hard for a new home then is it? Not if there is money I took a few seconds to admire this beautiful creature, the large eye staring involved? What upsets me even more is the fact that these same authoritive bodies balefully back at me, greens and greys shimmering in the sun; how can you not make little effort to rid our waters of a appreciate the zander? It’s a stunning fish, true parasite, the Signal Red Crayfish, and worthy quarry indeed. After a quick (amongst others) and refuse to allow photograph, I moved to a different area others to make inroads on their behalf to dispose of or make use of these voracious and began the pattern again. Thump! A predators but will willingly destroy a true startling strike made me think I’d finally run into a pike, but no, it proved to be a asset to the angling scene…shocking! smaller zander which went mad when it Anyway, I digress… I arrived at the felt the hook…great sport. As I returned waterside, had a quick cup of tea in the this fish however, I was shouted at by back of the van whilst I got my thoughts a gentleman who ponderously jogged together, then broke out the tackle. towards me. “Zander mate?” I replied I wasn’t sure if pike were present (I it was, and in fine condition too. “Can I suspected they were) so a wire trace was joined to my braided mainline, and a mid- have it? I eat every one I catch”. It took me a second or two to register what I was sized lure added. I intended to ‘sanitise’ hearing. I had to ask him to repeat his the area for pike first, then switch to remarks. “I eat them, I fish off my canal a fluorocarbon trace whilst fishing for boat, and take them when I catch them”. zander. An hour of wandering the banks The fish instantly splashed back into the bought nothing from pike, so I returned to my starting point, and tackled up in the water… He appeared incredulous. “What are you hope of a zander. doing?!” I stood up and told him that I My Sonik Magna rod, twinned with would never kill a zander (or any other matching reel loaded with 8lb braid, was fish for that matter) and he had no chance quickly pieced together, and I tied up a fluorocarbon trace, terminating in a 3g jig of getting one for the table off me. He then launched into a tirade about them head. My contact, who had kindly given being an invasive species (not true if me details of the venue (it pays to keep considered established, which they are things quiet sometimes, a bit of integrity here) and I was wrong to return it, before can unlock some fine spots indeed!) had also advised that the margins were a likely describing me in less than complimentary spot to tempt a first zander of the year, so terms. Hearing this from an Englishman of mature years, indeed a pensioner, I with a small rubber shad affixed, I began to explore the area in front of me. I’d seen was sometime taken aback, so returned some decent perch caught from the swims the compliments with equal friendliness as I attempted to advise him of his folly. too, so twitched the lure around in the He wouldn’t have it though and stormed hope of either species. off up the bank muttering further sweet I’d chosen a white lure to start, hoping nothings as I returned to my fishing. that it would show up well in coloured The attitude of some ‘anglers’ towards water, especially as I know the zander conservation, protection and indeed hunts predominantly by eyesight, but the fish they seek to catch astounds me despite an hour of dropping the tempter sometimes… into likely spots, hadn’t had so much Not too disheartened by the encounter, I as a follow by anything remotely fishy! decided to have a final fling around before Time to change. My next lure was a Fox Microfry; I love the thumping paddletail, the long drive home. Again, the pink Paramax splashed into the margins, and and if the fish couldn’t see the bait, once again a resounding whack saw me perhaps they would be able to feel it as engaged in another fish. This one took a it moved through the water? Another little longer to subdue, but eventually, a fruitless hour followed, I suspected that fine fish of around 4lbs was floundering I’d missed perhaps a single tentative bite on the surface ready for the net. but had nothing solid to connect with… Unhooked, it was gently paraded for the this was proving to be harder than I camera, admired, then rested until strong thought!

enough to slink back into the depths. I’d had three bites, and banked a trio of smashing zander, and aside from a briefly bruising brush with an idiot, I was happy with my tally. I believe that the zander offers real hope to waterways neglected by the authorities, encouraging lure anglers to join clubs in the hope of capturing these handsome fish. Indeed, I joined a club with the promise of such fish, only to find that within a month or two, the waterways had been electrofished, and the zander removed. They were not rehomed, just left to suffocate in a bucket… do you remember when we used to do that with pike? Because they ate all the roach? Before we realised what an asset they were to keeping a healthy, clean, disease free fishery? Hopefully, attitudes will change, and the zander will be better thought of in years to come… after all they are here to stay!

proud warne Speaking after a late equaliser deined the Millers three points, Warne said: “I asked their lads what their overall emotion was and they said disappointment. Mine was of pride. To be honest I thought they gave me everything they had. They kept in the game, first-half and obviously I asked the lads to do a lot physically to get into positions to try and stop. Then obviously to get our two goals in the second-half was good and I thought our play was a lot better, second-half. We broke really well on the counter-attack, especially. And we had pockets of play and then, in fairness to Stoke, I thought they more than deserved their two goals and created enough chances to get a point. I think a point, if you’d have asked me before the game if I’d take a point, obviously I would have. The way it sort of ended has disappointed the lads more than anything else. It wasn’t to hang on as such, we just didn’t defend to the end. I say it all the time but they really are a dressing room full of amazing human beings. They want to do well all the time, they want to do well for the club and the town. At the moment I think they’re making everyone really proud of them.” But the Millers did lose skipper Richard Wood moments after the second goal. “In fairness I thought when Zak Vyner came on at centrehalf, he was excellent,” Warne added: “I just think it just wasn’t ideal at the time because there was a bit of a pause and delay. Maybe the lads lost their concentration for a couple of minutes after and then the goal came in. The cross came through Willo’s legs which was a bit unfortunate but I can’t complain because it wasn’t against the run of play, I thought they deserved the goal they got. Woody’s done his groin, he doesn’t know how bad it is yet but, hopefully, he won’t be out for a period of time because I’ve got an ever-growing injury list unfortunately. Hopefully he can play a part on Wednesday night (against Bristol City) but it doesn’t look that optimistic.”

John Marquis had a day to remember as he scored his 49th and 50th goals for Rovers, on his 100th league outing for the club. Rovers started brightly, with Herbie Kane seeing a free-kick deflected by the wall then forcing Matt Macey into a save from distance. The lead came after 18 minutes, from Marquis. He collected a smart pass from James Coppinger, and he turned and smashed the ball home at the near post. Marquis had his tail up and clipped the outside of the post and Edwards stopped him with a good tackle moments later. But the home side had a good spell of possession as the half ended, with Lameiras clipping a great effort into a far corner in stoppage time after a period of play which had twice seen Marosi called into action. Rovers turned their play up even further in the second period, with Marquis firing over five minutes after the restart and Mallik Wilks beating several defenders before shooting wide. Rovers took the lead again after 58 minutes, and it was no more than they deserved. Wilks found himself again in a dangerous position on the right, and placed a perfectly-timed cross for Blair to smash home. McCann responded with two changes, bringing on Alfie May and Ali Crawford in place of James Coppinger and Jermaine Anderson. IHome keeper Matt Macey was in good form, making a point-blank save from a Wilks header then reacting quickly to stop Alfie May’s effort from the rebound. The home side were not allowed into the game until the closing stages, with Beestin then May leading a counter-attack which saw the latter’s shot pass agonisingly wide of the far post just ahead of the onrushing Marquis. But Rovers’ No.9 was not to be denied his second goal of the day, and it was a sublime finish. Macey stood up well, but Marquis cooly rounded him to find the angle and finished sweetly before celebrating his 50th goal for the club with the travelling fans.

John Marquis is relishing the attacking system put in place by manager Grant McCann after his double helped Rovers beat Plymouth Argyle 3-2 in Sky Bet League One.The No.9 scored either side of Matty Blair’s secondhalf strike to lift Rovers into third place in the table, taking his tally to the club to 50 strikes in all competitions, and he is enjoying being part of a winning side. He said: “I’m doing well, I’ve said before that it’s a role that I’m relishing and the manager wants me to keep making runs to stretch the defence. I have to keep believing that I’m going to get the ball when I make the runs, the manager breathes confidence into the whole squad. We can be proud of the result, it’s another game where we’ve won by one goal but it could have been more.” The win at Home Park was Rovers’ fourth in a row in the league, and Marquis believes the squad are showing what they’re capable of ahead of a trip to Accrington Stanley on Tuesday. He added: “We’re 10 games in and in a few games time we will be a quarter of the way through the season, we don’t want opportunities to pass us by. We go into every game to win it, we’re not getting carried away but four wins in a row is a good achievement and we want to keep building. We’ve got two games coming up now and will have to recover quickly before facing Accrington, but we go into it full of belief.”

Manager Grant McCann felt his side were great value for their win after collecting their fourth Sky Bet League One win in a row with the 3-2 success at Plymouth Argyle. John Marquis scored either side of a Matty Blair strike to secure a win in Devon against the Pilgrims and ensure Rovers stretched their unbeaten run in the league to seven. “It’s a good result and it was a great performance from us, we were excellent in the second half and should’ve had more than the three we did score - their keeper made some great saves and kept them in it throughout,” McCann said. “Even though we went ahead, we didn’t start the game very well. I called them over when we scored and said that it wasn’t good enough, but we stepped it up after the break and got our reward. The response after the break just showed the character the squad has, we did well to score and then score again, it’s a good three points and we simply blew them away after the break.” Rovers’ away win saw them rise to third in the league table, with Marquis also topping the goalscoring charts in the division, and McCann is pleased with the way his side have began life under his leadership. “We’re in a good place, we’ve got strength in depth , everyone in the team is pushing one another to get better and keep improving, I’m pleased with that and the attitude of the group,” he added.”There’s belief, confidence and desire right through the team, we’re seven unbeaten now and chasing down those above us - that’s the desire we need to have. It’s still early on in the season and we’re not getting carried away, we’re 10 games in and we’ve started well, but there are two teams that have started even better, so we’re looking to hunt them down.”

mcgoldrick double wraps up the win David McGoldrick scored two late goals to secure the points for the Blades in a game that had two penalties and the lead change hands three times. Manager Wilder named an unchanged Blades starting XI, sticking with the starters who beat Preston North End last weekend. There was one change on the bench where Coutts replaced Woodburn. The first action saw Millwall’s Sheffield-born striker, Gregory, slide the ball into the Blades net but the flag was already up for offside against O’Brien. United had a lot of early touches but were struggling

to break down the home rearguard, although Sharp got around the back to collect Basham’s pass but Amos saved. A Norwood effort was deflected over and from the resulting corner, the Blades were handed an opportunity to open the scoring. A cross from the left was adjudged to have hit the arm of a defender and referee Davies pointed to the spot. Skipper Sharp took responsibility for the penalty but goalkeeper Amos made a fantastic save, pushing the ball onto the crossbar. Despite being disappointed with the miss, the Blades remained on top and Webster’s deflection from

Fleck’s shot made it easy for Amos. Millwall were on the back foot and United’s pressure finally paid off on 40 minutes. After a one-two with Freeman, Duffy looped in a cross and SHARP positioned himself between the central defenders before heading past Amos. Before the break, Egan needed treatment for a cut eye and Henderson pushed away a Gregory effort after Morison’s flick on. Millwall, though, made a blistering start to the second half and two goals in five minutes put them ahead. On 47 minutes, from a deep Williams corner, COOPER rose highest at the back

post and headed into the far corner. Soon after, Leonard’s speculative ball down the left channel saw GREGORY wriggle free and he beat Henderson from close-range. Moments later, O’Brien went close to a third for the home side but he was unable to convert Morison’s nod down. From the hour, Millwall were happy to slow down the action at every point whilst United bossed possession. Freeman and Basham combined down the right but Duffy’s deflected effort was pushed away by Amos. McGoldrick could only find Amos after a move from left to

right but United were well on top and on 77 minutes a second penalty was awarded when Williams pushed Duffy right on the edge of the box. McGOLDRICK took over spot-kick duties and beat Amos in front of the Blades fans. Within seconds the Blades had the ball in the net again but Sharp was flagged offside when heading home another move from the right. United remained on top and another impressive

move down the right, quick feet and a couple of onetwos, was too hot for Millwall to handle - Duffy provided the decisive cross and McGOLDRICK beat the exposed Amos from close range, again in front of the jubilant Blades fans. It was now United’s turn to slow down the action and Wilder’s men comfortably kept possession to keep the home side at bay ahead of the final whistle.

A hat-trick on her debut for Sophie Jones gave United’s women’s team their first win of the season in a comfortable 4-1 victory against Aston Villa. Jones’ hat-trick alongside Alethea Paul’s first goal for the club from the penalty spot ensured Kerri Welsh’s goal to equalise in the first half was no danger to the Blades come full-time. Carla Ward couldn’t have asked for a better start as United took the lead inside the first five minutes. A poor pass across the back from a Villa defender presented an opportunity to Jones, the striker promptly made a yard for herself and fired a low effort past Aguirre in the Villa goal. It wasn’t all smooth running for the Blades though as Ward lost two key players to injury inside the first 25 minutes. Lisa Ryan was stretchered off after just 10 minutes before striker Bex Rayner hobbled off either side of Welsh equalising after some sloppy defending allowed the Villa forward to run through unchallenged and slot beyond Alex Brooks, the goalkeeper making her debut for the Blades. United remained in control of the match and had more than enough chances to go back in front before Elisha N’Dow brought down Sophie Barker after a run into the penalty area from the middle. Paul stepped up to send Aguirre the wrong way and join Jones in scoring her first goal for the club from the penalty spot. Paul was in the action again before the break, playing in substitute Chloe Dixon who saw her effort saved. The second half saw United remain in control and extend their lead through Jones just five minutes after the break. The forward picked the ball up just outside the box and curled a brilliant effort into the top corner to establish a two-goal gap. Jones completed her hat-trick with 20 minutes to go when she slid home in front of an opposing defender to tap home a cross from the right and seal what was a deserved victory for United.

derby stalemate a good point in the end Two stunning goals – one in each half for both sides – punctuated Friday night’s Yorkshire derby as Wednesday and Leeds played out a 1-1 draw. Adam Reach delved into the top drawer to give the Owls the lead before Mateusz Klich followed suit to earn the visitors a point. Leeds were good value for a share of the spoils and on another day might have taken the win. But Wednesday held out at the back when Leeds scented victory to extend their improved run of form. After surviving a penalty scare when Pontus Jansson tangled with Fernando Forestieri, Leeds were on the back foot in the early throes. Wednesday pressed with purpose seeking the advantage and Steven Fletcher volleyed wide having been picked out by Matt Penney down the left flank. Leeds crept back into proceedings and suddenly might have netted twice inside a

minute. First, Ash Baker inadvertently prodded just past his own post following a dangerous cross from Samuel Saiz. Then, moments later, Barry Douglas headed across goal and the Owls were relieved to see the ball bounce back into play off the opposite upright. Back play moved to the other end, where Michael Hector smashed wide from distance before Baker forced Bailey Peacock-Farrell into a flying save. The visitors fought back again and Cameron Dawson came to Wednesday’s rescue when Klich unleased from 20 yards. But Wednesday got the breakthrough right on half time – and what a goal it was. Little seemed on for Reach when he lined up a half volley from all of 30 yards but the former Middlesbrough man conjured an amazing hit that bulged the net off the inside of the post. Inevitably Leeds flew out of the traps for the second half and

dominated before making their possession count on 54 minutes. Klich advanced menacingly on goal and picked his spot with some aplomb from 20 yards to curl out of Dawson’s reach. The Whites sniffed blood and went for a second, with Tyler Roberts only just off target from the angle of the penalty area. Tom Lees thwarted Saiz with a perfectly timed lastditch challenge from close range as Leeds went for all three points. Next it was Hector’s turn to deny the visitors when Roberts seemed favourite to score, then the latter saw a glancing header cleared off the line by Jordan Thorniley with the clock counting down. It was a typically frantic finish to the derby clash and although both sides took a point, Leeds arguably left the Steel City frustrated on the balance of play.

Jos Luhukay said he was pleased with the derby draw with Leeds at Hillsborough on Friday night. Stunning goals from Adam Reach and Mateusz Klich punctuated an entertaining clash that Leeds were favourites to win. And win they may have done as the visitors flexed their firstplaced muscle but the Owls held firm to earn a share of the spoils. Luhukay said: “I am pleased with the point because Leeds came at us very strongly in

the second half. They were very quick on the transition, very quick going forward, and they showed why they are the first in the division. So I am not unhappy with the point because Leeds are a good team, this is why they are first. But we had some good moments of our own, particularly in the second half, but I think a point is very much okay after looking at the game.” Luhukay had high praise for Reach’s stunning strike that

was reminiscent of the midfielder’s wonder goal at Aston Villa last season. He added: “It was very special to see a goal of that quality. But it came from a player who can do these special kind of things. But I do not mind how the goals go in or who scores them as long as we get a positive result from the game. This game was tough, one of the hardest we will face for sure, so I must be pleased to come out with a point.”

Adam Reach said everyone at the club is thinking of Andy Kalinins and his family following the recent passing of his wife Hayley. The entire Wednesday team ran to the touchline after Reach’s goal against Leeds on Friday evening to hold up a shirt reading ‘Kalinins’, with the number one on the back, to show
