THE TOUR DE YORKSHIRE WILL RETURN TO DONCASTER The exciting announcement was made by organisers Welcome to Yorkshire last week – and this will be the third time the prestigious global racing event has come to the borough. Since its first visit to Doncaster in April 2016, the Tour de Yorkshire has passed through 33 of our communities, giving 47.6% of the borough’s population

opportunity to watch the race. That’s nearly 193,000 residents. Ros Jones, Mayor of Doncaster, said: “We’re thrilled to host the Tour de Yorkshire again – who can forget the breath-taking spectacle of world class cyclists racing through our towns and villages or the incredible atmosphere when we welcomed the event for the first time in 2016 and then in May earlier this year. “Our reputation

for hosting major sporting events of this scale continues to go from strength to strength. “2019 looks like it’s going to be another bumper year for events in the borough and we’re looking forward to working with our communities again to help make them a great success.” Tour de Yorkshire first came to Doncaster in April 2016, with over 50,000 event-goers across the borough turning out to

catch the crème de la crème of the cycling world in action. In May this year, Doncaster was allocated two days of racing with riders again receiving an amazing welcome from communities who had lined the streets to experience the breath-taking cycling and electric atmosphere. Also in 2018, there were in excess of 50,000 spectators across the route in Doncaster’s towns and villages.

TRAM TRAIN TO WELCOME PASSENGERS The UK’S first Tram Train will welcome on board its first passengers in three weeks, it was announced last week by Tram Train partners Stagecoach Supertram, Network Rail and South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive (SYPTE). Passengers in South Yorkshire will be the first in the country to benefit from the innovative Tram Trains – a special tram vehicle, designed to run on both the city’s tramlines and the rail network between Sheffield and Rotherham, from Thursday 25th October 2018.

The Tram Trains, which will allow passengers to make a single continuous journey connecting tram stops and conventional rail stations, have completed extensive testing and Tram Train drivers have been trained to drive on the extended system over the railway. The Government funded programme is a partnership between SYPTE, Network Rail, Stagecoach Supertram and Northern Rail to pilot this pioneering technology. Tram Train Project Board Member Steve Davenport from SYPTE said: “As project partner we are thrilled, to introduce Tram

Train services on South Yorkshire’s transport network later this month. The pioneering pilot has the ability to transform travel both locally and nationally. Connecting the people and places in Sheffield and Rotherham marks the start of this journey. We hope passengers from the local area and beyond enjoy the benefits this new transport option will provide.” Councillor Jack Scott, cabinet member for transport and development at SCC, said: “This is fantastic news for people in Rotherham and especially Sheffield. We have much in common and this link,

the first of its kind in the country, is in keeping with our pioneering spirit. “Tram-train will change people’s lives for the better, strengthen our shared economies and make a real difference to journey times. “It also shows our confidence in our Supertram network and an ambition to extend it further in the future. “This technology has the potential to be rolled out further across the country and continue to promote our strong and thriving sustainable transport network.” Three Tram Trains an hour will travel on the Supertram network from

Sheffield Cathedral to Meadowhall South, before proceeding over a new section of track linking the tram line to the rail track called the Tinsley Chord, and on to the national rail network to Parkgate Retail Centre via Rotherham Central station. Tickets for the service will be available from conductors on board. South Yorkshire’s Tram Train pilot will run for two years while customer satisfaction, passenger numbers, reliability and costs are tested. Tram Train will continue to run as a local service if the pilot is successful.

THIS WEEK In the News

If laziness was an Olympic sport. I’d come in fourth so I wouldn’t have to walk up to the podium. I asked my son if he had seen the newspaper? Instead he pulls out his tablet, opens the news app, and calls me old school, “tablets are the way to go nowadays’ he says. The fly never stood a chance. The school phoned me today and said, “Your son’s been telling lies.” I replied, “Well, tell him he’s bloody good - I ain’t got any kids!” A man in an interrogation room says “I’m not saying a word without my lawyer present.” Cop: You are the lawyer. Lawyer: Exactly, so where’s my present? My son asked me: “Dad, was I adopted as a child?” I sighed, placed my hand on on his shoulder and replied wistfully: “We tried, but nobody would take you.” I was so drunk night. When I got to the bottom of the stairs, i took off my coat, shoes, top, trousers and underwear. I crept upstairs very quietly... It was only when i got to the top of the stairs, I realised I was on the bus. I used to be scared of pretty girls. So my Mum explained that was silly, because they’re much more scared of me. A burglar stole all the light bulbs in my house. I know I should be more upset, but I’m absolutely delighted!

ATTRACTIONS

This can be a good time to talk things over and reach compromises, but perhaps less perfect for striking deals or agreeing to anything involving finances. Over coming weeks, arrangements can change and even reverse Aries. For now, take things one step at a time. Call for more astral advice...

You’ll have an opportunity to tie up any loose ends and to forge ahead with a plan that’s particularly personal to you. If you’re waiting for approval for a loan or other money, there may be delays or hoops to jump through. Bide your time, as better deals could yet emerge. Call for more advice...

Relationships likely continue to be a major focus for you Taurus. If you have experienced any issues at all more recently, it will help to keep talking. The more you discuss any edgy issues, the more you can bring them into the light and the easier it can be to find solutions. Call for more advice...

If you feel stuck, a powerful blend of energies might inspire you to ask for advice from someone who has been through a similar experience. At the same time, harnessing your imagination and channeling it into a creative project can be rewarding and therapeutic Scorpio. Call for more astral advice...

An intense focus suggests you can have questions for someone, but may still be none the wiser as to why they are behaving as they do. Work and lifestyle related activities can see you move forward only to fall back in other areas, which can be frustrating. Test each step as you go. Call for more...

Energies in a reclusive chart sector suggest you could intuitively feel it is time to resolve an issue that’s been in the back of your mind. If anything seems overwhelming, then asking for help could bring comfort. A book or movie can also inspire you to persevere. Call for more advice...

You may be juggling tasks at home, but there can be opportunities around creative strands to enhance your natural skills and perhaps even earn more money. If you’re talented at art or crafts or have entrepreneurial ability, look to find a way to gain from your talents. Call for more astral advice...

Are you on track with key plans? It may seem too early to know for sure, but the coming week can be a time of decision and a turning point in this regard. A conversation with an influential friend could allow you to see possibilities you hadn’t considered before Capricorn. Call for more...

You could reach a crucial milestone this week, encouraging a decision about whether to continue with a bold idea or move on to something else. This may be an opportunity to get your priorities in order and go from there. Redecorating can add some extra sparkle to key rooms. Call for more...

You may have some great ideas, but are all of them really worthy of your time and energy? Try to be as realistic as possible. Delays can be a blessing though, and you may find that over coming weeks various events and information can tie everything together more clearly. Call for more advice...

Bright ideas can bubble up, but don’t assume everyone will agree with them. It could be hard work to get one key person to even consider a plan. What seems impossible now, might shift over the weeks ahead as nothing is set in stone and people can be changeable, so keep your options open. Call for more...

If you have wanted to visit somewhere which means a lot to you, this can be the week you make arrangements to travel. Something can shift during your visit there, helping you find inspiration that may resolve a relationship issue or other personal matter. Call for more news and astral advice...

IN CELEBRATION OF LUNCH CLUBS Earlier this week Voluntary Action Sheffield and Sheffield City Council held a ‘Thank You’ event to acknowledge the work and dedication of the 100’s of people from all areas of Sheffield who give their time, for free, to run lunch clubs for others. They may be called lunch clubs but they offer much more than that. They provide a safe and comfortable environment for people to meet, make friends, exchange ideas and information. Most of all they help prevent the social isolation that affects the more vulnerable people in our society. These clubs have been in existence across for Sheffield for many years. For example; Sheffield Irish Elders group have been offering food and friendship since 1989. Some are small groups of about 20 and others like St Mary’s at Bramall Lane caters for up to 70 people. Large or small these groups need your help. If you could give 3 hours a week you can help this service continue, make friends and most importantly make a difference to the lives of many people in Sheffield.

LUNCH CLUB REFERRAL SERVICE

VOLUNTEER AT A LUNCH CLUB

Our lunch clubs referral service is a valuable resource for those wanting to join a lunch club to join one that is right for them and perhaps close to their home . For more information contact: Sophia Arthurs-Hartnett, Lunch Clubs Development Officer. Telephone: 0114 253 6650 email: s.arthurs-hartnett@vas.org.uk

Typically, volunteers help with: • cooking and serving meals • bookkeeping and finances • organising and general administration • transporting members • helping new people settle in and putting everyone at ease • activities and fundraising

START A LUNCH CLUB Our dedicated service supports around 80 Lunch Clubs in Sheffield. They provide meals, social activities and stimulation to older people in the city. If you run a lunch club you can have support from us in managing finances, insurances, organising your group and recruiting, training and managing your volunteers. You can also use us as a sounding board for developing ideas – for example on activities for your members.

TIME TO HAVE YOUR FLU JAB Flu vaccination is available every year on the NHS to help protect adults and children at risk of flu and its complications. Flu can be unpleasant, but if you are otherwise healthy it will usually clear up on its own within a week.

However, flu can be more severe in certain people, such as: • anyone aged 65 and over • pregnant women • children and adults with an underlying health condition (such as long-term heart or respiratory disease) • children and adults with weakened immune systems Anyone in these risk groups is more likely to develop potentially serious complications of flu, such as pneumonia (a lung infection), so it's recommended that they have a flu vaccine every year to help protect them. According to Public Health England 15,000 people died from the virus last year. Each one of them will have contracted the virus from someone they came in to close contact with. Research also showed that around half of those infected with the virus showed no symptoms - but they are infectious to others.

Who should get the flu vaccine? The flu vaccine is routinely given on the NHS to: • adults 65 and over

1287 10/10/2018

• people with certain medical conditions (including children in atrisk groups from 6 months of age) • pregnant women • children aged 2 and 3 • children in reception class and school years 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5

For 2018, there are 3 types of flu vaccine: • a live quadrivalent vaccine (which protects against 4 strains of flu), given as a nasal spray. This is for children and young people aged 2 to 17 years eligible for the flu vaccine. • a quadrivalent injected vaccine. This is for adults aged 18 and over butbelow the age of 65 who are at increased risk from flu because of a long-term health condition and for children 6 months and above in an eligible group who cannot receive the live vaccine. • an adjuvanted trivalent injected vaccine. This is for people aged 65 and over as it has been shown to be more effective in this age group. 65 and overs and the flu vaccine You are eligible for the flu vaccine this year (2018/19) if you will be aged 65 and over on March 31 2019 – that is, you were born on or before March 31 1954. So, if you are currently 64 but will be 65 on March 31 2019, you do qualify.

The majority of lunch clubs are run by volunteers and there are lots of opportunities to get involved. Whatever your gift or talent it probably can be used at a lunch club!

If you enjoy the company of older people and are looking for a useful way to spend a few hours a week, why not volunteer to help at a lunch club? Contact us to find out more!

50+ NEEDS YOU!

If you are interested in volunteering with us then please get in touch. We have a range of volunteer vacancies, some to give occasional help, others where you can commit to help for a set number of hours each week. For more information telephone: 0114 2502850 or Email: sheffield50plus@ageuksheffield.org.uk

Where to get the flu vaccine You can have your NHS flu vaccine at your GP surgery or a local pharmacy offering the service , If you have your flu vaccine at a pharmacy, you don't have to inform your GP it is up to the pharmacist to do that. How effective is the flu vaccine? Flu vaccine is the best protection we have against an unpredictable virus that can cause unpleasant illness in children and severe illness and death among at-risk groups, including older people, pregnant women and those with an underlying medical health condition. Studies have shown that the flu vaccine will help prevent you getting the flu. It won't stop all flu viruses and the level of protection may vary, so it's not a 100% guarantee that you'll be flu-free, but if you do get flu after vaccination it's likely to be milder and shorter-lived than it would otherwise have been.

Save money and improve your health just like Lawrence

in the Peak District, he loves the freedom that being a non smoker has now given him, along with the support of the service and using nicotine replacement products Lawrence also found his partner stopping smoking at the same time was a great encouragement to him. As if that was not motivation enough Lawrence has saved over £800 since stopping smoking at the start of the summer.

Lawrence has been a smoker for 19 years, he began smoking when out socialising with friends smoking up to 25 per day, Lawrence decided he was getting sick of smoking and wanted to stop for his health. Lawrence accessed Stop Smoking support via the Yorkshire Smokefree website yorkshiresmokefree.nhs.uk Since stopping smoking Lawrence has lots more energy and has even found the energy to start trekking

Why not join in Lawrence’s success and Stop Smoking today, contact Yorkshire Smokefree on 0114 3216149 to find out how you too can become Smokefree.

SHEFFIELD BID’S BUDDIES TO PROVIDE FRIENDLY WELCOME TO CITY Sheffield’s Business Improvement District (Sheffield BID) is bringing a new team of city hosts to Sheffield, who are set to welcome visitors and help people find their way in the city centre. The BID Buddies will be professionally suited and booted, with distinctive bowler hats to help them stand out on the streets. They will act

as a street concierge service, providing welcome, way-finding and reassurance to visitors. The new team will help increase Sheffield’s reputation for being one of the UK’s friendliest cities. They will provide a cheerful hellos and helpful words to shoppers and visitors, as well as those who live, work and invest in the city centre. The BID Buddies will

also promote BID businesses, city centre events and visitor attractions. When not greeting the public, the Buddies will keep businesses informed about the activities of the BID, and promote BID opportunities to the levy payers who fund the BID. The team will be the BID’s “eyes and ears” on the street, providing intelligence and data gathering as well as reporting environmental issues and anti-social behaviour. The team has been formed in response to growing calls from the city’s office and professional services sector, which represents more than 40% of companies that pay the BID levy. The BID Buddies will also play an active

role in supporting events, conferences and business meetings for levy paying businesses with a meet and greet service. Diane Jarvis, Sheffield BID Manager, said: “The office market is going from strength to strength with Sheffield fast becoming a location that is attractive to investors. With a central business district emerging around the Heart of the City II creating a new sense of upmarket vibrancy, the time is right to introduce a team who will appeal not only to visitors but to prime UK and international investors as well. “The evolving nature of the high street means that we need to reimagine the city

LIVE EVENTS AT THE PARAMOUNT

‘A hilarious and heartfelt celebration of the life and songs of one of this country’s finest and funniest wordsmiths. Highly entertaining whether you are discovering Jake for the first time, or an ardent fan.’ The late Jake Thackray is being increasingly acknowledged as one of the greatest English songwriters of the twentieth century, a unique talent, whose songs are full of poetry, wit, irreverence and humanity. His intelligent and hilarious lyrics, talent for storytelling, clever wordplay, occasional, artful use of vulgarity and surreal imagination delighted many viewers and outraged some. Since his death in 2002 there has been growing recognition of his genius and a resurgence of interest in his work. His admirers include Jarvis Cocker, Alex Turner, Don Black, Thea Gilmore, Cerys Matthews, Benjamin Clementine and Neil Gaiman.

centre as a place where businesses can locate and create jobs. The city must also be a place which people want to visit for a variety of reasons. We must focus on creating a more attractive and professional environment for a wider range of businesses. “The BID Buddies will bring new momentum and energy to the city centre, complementing the role of the council’s existing ambassador team”. The BID Buddies is the fourth team to be introduced to the city centre by the BID. They will join the BID’s dedicated police resource, headed up by Police Sergeant Matthew Burdett; the Clean

Team, a team of cleaners who remove graffiti from the city’s walls; and the Street Rangers, who complete a daily early morning clean of the streets. The BID Buddies initiative is being delivered through The Welcome People, whose award-winning

teams greet visitors at some of the UK’s most popular destinations. Richard Eyre, Head of City Centre Management at Sheffield City Council said: “This is a great addition to the city centre. The service will integrate closely with

existing city centre teams to deliver a complementary offer, working together to bring more benefits to the day to day management of Sheffield city centre.” The BID Buddies will be out on Sheffield’s streets seven days week. If you see them, say hello!

Motorists who hit the drive-thru on the way home from work might be unknowingly risking a hefty fine — and could even lose their licence. Grabbing a cheeseburger, picking up a coffee or even paying at the pump could see drivers hit by a £1,000 fine and six penalty points due to mobile phone laws. If motorists pay using their phones at a drive-thru, they’re automatically breaking the law by using their handheld devices behind the wheel. And for drivers who have been qualified less than two years, this punishment could see them stripped of their licence before they’ve even finished their fries. As the RAC explains in its handy guide to mobile phone laws, “if your engine is running, your phone should be nowhere near your hands. This is still the case if the engine stops automatically to save fuel (called ‘start-stop’ technology).” And the penalties can be applied whether you’re on a public road or private land with free access to the

public, such as fast-food restaurants and drive-thru coffee houses. Following the introduction of tougher punishments in March 2017, drivers caught using their phone behind the wheel automatically face six penalty points and a £200 fine. And should the police judge your case to be especially reckless, they could take you to court, where you could have your licence revoked and receive a maximum fine of £1,000. RAC spokesman Rod Dennis warns motorists against being unwittingly caught out by the rules surrounding phone use when they next pay at the drive-thru or petrol pump. He said: “Every driver should always ensure they are parked and have their engine switched off before using a handheld phone – anything else could land them in trouble, even if they are in a car park, drive-thru or petrol forecourt.” A recent RAC survey found that almost twothirds of UK motorists are unaware of the current penalties for using a handheld mobile device while driving. For more information on the rules surrounding mobile use, check out Be Phone Smart, the RAC’s public campaign to end phone use behind the wheel.

ANGLER’S CORNER

indicators. It was now a waiting game… It’s been my usual practice over the years to use semi-barbed trebles for my trace making, but with Clint Walker this year, I’ve opted for a different approach. I’ve seen many inexperienced pike anglers At last! It’s pike season again! Hurrah! I struggle to release trebles, resulting in panic, can’t tell you how much I’ve been looking forward to sitting on the bank waiting for the pain and often damage to the fish, and although I rarely have any issues, (I strike early!) I line to ping from the clip, and slowly spool wondered whether a single hook would work off the reel as a toothy adversary picks up just as well. After a trip to Australia, during my deadbait, and luckily, I’m off to a good start already! This season however, I’ve been which I’d picked up some reasonably priced determined to try out a new tactic, which I’m circle hooks, I affixed them singly to the end of some Pikepro 35lb wire, sleeved the twizzled hoping will prove successful, just so I can attachments, and slipped another sleeve over share it with you. My first pike session of the year was planned the swivel at the other end; quick, simple, and hopefully effective. The roach was mounted on on a Staffordshire reservoir, a Stoke-onthe circle hook passed through the tail, and the Trent Angling Society water, and I’d spent smelt sat on trebles; time to compare! the previous day spraying lubricant on long nosed pliers, sidecutters and forceps, making An hour passed, and Stuart whistled to attract my attention. He was landing his first fish, up traces, selecting my rods, and generally taken on a floatfished deadbait; my alarms getting ready for what promised to be a however, remained silent. I moved my baits, cold, wet day on the bank. Sleepless with swapping positions, and returned to my cup of anticipation, I rolled up as the gates opened, tea. Another hour, another whistle, Stuart landed and pulled in behind an angler I’ve met his second fish, and had also lost another, whilst before, Stuart, who was busy unloading his my drop offs remained motionless. I swapped tackle. We chatted briefly, selected our pegs, and headed off happily to prepare for the day the baits for a second time, refreshing them with as the sky darkened, and the first few spots of an injection of oils, and huddled beneath the brolly. Five minutes later, a bleep alerted me, drizzle fell… and I watched the drop off indicator twitch up First up, the umbrella, with all the kit and my slowly; the roach was attracting interest! It was chair quickly wedged beneath it. Once that a tentative bite, so I got up and removed the line was done, then the second task was to prepare from the clip, and held it between my fingers to the unhooking kit, mat, and camera tripod. I see if I could feel a fish… see many anglers keen to get the bait out first, I noted a slight pressure, but nothing more, and then get caught out when a patrolling pike and decided to strike; I’d rather miss the fish snatches the bait almost instantly. Get squared than risk a deeply hooked pike, and as I swept away first, then think about getting a bait in… the rod aloft, I knew I’d missed my first take it’s better for you, and safer for the fish! I’m of the year! Stuart laughed… Ahh! The single still surprised by the number of anglers who hook had failed to find purchase, but looking have never caught pike, and if asked, the top tip I’ll give is ‘be prepared’. If you are properly at my bait, it was almost unmarked, so I wasn’t confident that the fish had actually got the roach organised, pike fishing is so much easier, and in its mouth. A fresh tempter went on the hook, unhooking safely should be your first priority. and it quickly went back out to the same spot. Get that bit right, and your angling is much I was hoping the pike was still around! A few more enjoyable. minutes later, and another bleep caught my I chosen to fish at the deeper end of the attention; the same rod, the roach bait again... reservoir, adjacent to a floating jetty, where I This time the indicator jerked up towards the believed a few fish may have been located as rod blank and fell away, and line continued to a result of a huge influx of cold rain lowering unwind from my reel. I slapped the bail arm the water temperature considerably. I know over, lifted the rod, and felt resistance; yes! deeper water takes longer to cool, so assumed I’d hit the fish at a fair range, and it stayed deep that any prey fish would still be keen to take advantage of slightly warmer water. I’d noticed until it came closer. As it broke the surface, it ‘tail-walked’ and I realised that if the hook a few roach dimpling the surface before the wind rippled the lake, so I was hopeful that pike was going to come out, it was at that point. I’d would be nearby. Once I’d got everything ready, crushed the barb to make it easier to remove, but if it could withstand that much pressure, I was ready to cast out the baits; I’d opted for a small roach on one rod, and on the other, one of as the fish flew through the air, then I was confident it wouldn’t dislodge! A couple of my favourite pike baits, the humble smelt. The minutes later, and my first pike of the year was roach was plopped in off the end of the jetties, safely netted, the single hook easily visible the smelt launched out into around fourteen in the scissors of the jaw, and it was quickly feet of open water. Both were left to settle, the carried to the mat. As I peeled back the folds of lines sunk, and then popped into my drop off

the net, it was instantly apparent that the single hook had held well, the wide gape providing stability and purchase, and with the crushed barb, it was extremely easy to remove. Result! I took a moment to admire the fish which just scraped into double figures, and then slipped it back to swim away strongly. Single hook one, trebles nil. Having recast both baits, I waited patiently as the rain drummed on the umbrella and drank yet more tea. Stuart had seen no more action, and as we sat silently, the weather got worse, with drizzle swirling under the shelter and the temperature dropping; it wasn’t pleasant as conditions deteriorated! Fifteen minutes after the first fish, an extremely fast take ripped the line from the indicator, and the alarm squealed as line passed over it. I wasn’t missing this one, and gleefully whistled Stuart to let him know! Once more the single hook had wedged in the pike’s jaws, and this time, a slightly bigger fish slipped angrily over the net. Single hook two, trebles nil. Another fine pike in pristine condition was quickly freed of the hook, and I did weigh this one at a shade over 13lb; not huge, but immaculate, and certainly worthy of a picture. That proved to be the last action of the day for either of us as the wind chill bit, and I eventually packed up and wandered over to a shivering Stuart to say goodbye before climbing into the van and heading for home. Had it proved that one hook was better than

trebles? Certainly not, the difference could have been down to bait choice, but it did prove that a single hook trace will engage with pike, and it does make them easier to unhook. Will I stick with it? It’s definitely worth further investigation, and I’ve already had much interest on social media about the rig, so I’ll persevere and let you know!

COUNTY SENIOR FOOTBALL with Michael Clarke

A dreary and damp October weekend was warmed up thoroughly with a full County Senior League programme. A huge fixture list of 20 games took place on Saturday. Premier Division North Gawber Colliery beat Dodworth Miners Welfare to overtake them and go top last week; well their fixtures were not getting an easier this week as they faced third placed Stocksbridge Park Steels Reserves at home. The game ended goalless. This gave Dodworth the chance to retain first position, with a win away against Jubilee Sports. Dodworth duly obliged with a 2-0 win to take them two points clear. Defending champions Swinton Athletic made it four games unbeaten with a 6-0 win over struggling Handsworth Parramore Reserves. After a slow start Swinton are up to fifth with the win. Grimethorppe Sports are just a point behind in sixth place, after they beat Hepworth United 2-0 at home on Saturday. Goals from Mitch Savage (2), Jack Moore, Edward Newsome and Reece High (2) gave Penistone Church Reserves an outstanding 6-0 home win over Frecheville. Penistone are into fourth place with the victory. Wombwell Main ended a run of four straight defeats with an impressive 3-0 away win over High Green Villa at St George’s Park. The win moves them back into a mid-table position. South Kirkby Colliery edged a tight encounter with Oughtibridge WMSC at Oughtibridge War Memorial Ground 1-0 to climb into eighth position in the table. Division One Seven matches in and it is still neck and neck at the top of Division One between Ecclesfield Red Rose 1915 and Burngreave FC. Ecclesfield lead only on goal difference,

after they beat Wombwell Main Reserves 2-0 on Saturday. Burngreave were 4-2 winners at home against Denaby Main. AFC Dronfield moved into third place with a 3-1 win over Hemsworth Miners Welfare Reserve at Gosforth Playing Fields. Houghton Main have lost all four of their latest league games, however they altered this on Saturday, with 1-0 home win over sixth placed Boynton Sports. Braces from both Aaron Hatfield and Adam Kinsella helped inspire Brinsworth Whitehill to a 6-2 home win over Millmoor Juniors. Daniel Duffy and Jordan Thomas were also on target for Brisnworth. Kiveton Park beat clinched their second win of the season with a 2-1 win over fourth placed Caribbean Sports at Wales High School. Sheffield Medics also registered their second win of the season, with a 3-2 home win over Sheffield Bankers. Division Two Wombwell Town’s perfect start to life in the County Senior League has stretched to five games, as they beat Caribbean Sports Reserves on Saturday. Ardsley Athletico Juniors, also new to the league, are in second and also unbeaten. However, they were held to a 2-2 draw this weekend against third placed Stocksbridge Park Steels Development. Sheffield Union managed a 2-1 win over Swinton Athletic Reserves at Norton Playing Fields. The win is the Union’s first at home this campaign and takes them into fourth place. United Worksop claimed their biggest win so far in the County Senior League, as they beat Worsbrough Bridge Athletic Development convincingly 5-0 at Manton Athletic Sports Club. Elsewhere, Dodworth Miners Welfare Reserves were 1-0 winners at home against New Bohemians. Thurcroft Miners Institute were also home winners, as they beat AFC Dronfield Reserves 2-1.

WILLIAMS WON’T STOP Follow Your Local Team Every Week In The Mercury WORKING FOR OPPORTUNITY MISSED FOR MILLERS INTERNATIONAL CALL MILLERS boss Paul Warne admitted that his side’s 3-1 defeat at the hands of Birmingham City was a “missed opportunity” – with injury and tiredness taking the toll on his depleted squad. Lukas Jutkiewicz’s hat-trick proved the difference between the sides at St Andrew’s – with sub Jon Taylor’s late strike proving scant consolation for Warne’s side, who remain pointless on the road this season, following their sixth straight defeat on their travels. Speaking to the assembled press corps afterwards, Warne felt his side failed to make the most of their positive start in England’s second city – with Jutkiewicz’s first-half double putting the hosts in charge. “I can’t give them the excuse for the first goal,” Warne admitted. “We’ve been really good on set-pieces this season but we’ve conceded from one and for the second goal, it was a bit of a pinball one. For the first one, we don’t have to give the corner away and we need to be tighter on the marking. Marek (Rodak’s) been outstanding but he will be disappointed with that one. It’s a pity because I didn’t think we were in any danger at that point.” Following the break, Jutkiewicz claimed the match ball with a well-taken third before

Taylor struck, which prompted a late Millers rally – but the home side held on to record, just their second league win of the campaign. With the Millers playing their second game in four days, Warne admitted that his injuryhit side were feeling the effects of their demanding Championship campaign, to date. “It was not as good as we have been,” Warne added. “Physically the lads gave me everything but they didn’t look as sharp as they have looked in recent weeks. I don’t think we got outplayed at all today. We just got a little bit outmuscled in both boxes which I don’t usually say about my team. “I think playing on Wednesday night did take its toll and my team did look jaded today. A few of the senior pros looked tired at the end. “We’ve had six or seven out for a while and I had a few that started that didn’t look fit. It was a game too far but it was an opportunity we wasted today. If we had come with a stronger team, I’m sure we would have got a more positive result. “We have two weeks to get a few of the lads back for our next home game.”

With Millers defender Semi Ajayi recently earning his first senior cap for international side Nigeria, teammate Ryan Williams is hoping that his exploits in English football’s second tier can help him into the reckoning for his native Australia. The Perth-born wideman has featured for his country up to U23s level but is yet to receive a full call-up, however, following his recent inclusion on the Socceroos’ standby list, Williams is keen to ensure his club form keeps him at the forefront of his international boss’ mind. “I made the stand-by squad after getting a message off the coach which said keep doing what you are doing which was nice,” he told www.themillers.co.uk. “I kept myself ready in case the call came, and hopefully now I can keep starting games, keep my form to a high standard and try to impress again.”

Meanwhile, the 24-year-old has been kept on his toes by the competition for places in the midfield ranks at AESSEAL New York Stadium and he admits that he and his teammates are well-aware that they have to perform to keep their place in Paul Warne’s side. “At the start of the season the Gaffer always said that he wanted to strengthen in the middle to help out Will (Vaulks) and Matt (Palmer),” Williams continued. “Now we have Ryan Manning and Richie, and we also know young Ben Wiles is making great strides too. There is real competition now, which is great and it gives us that chance to play with three in midfield knowing Semi can do a great job in there as well. The gaffer is all about good competition for places and you can see that now right across the midfield.” Williams concluded by adding that whilst speculation of a return for promotionwinning midfielder and another internatioanl in the Millers ranks, Richie Towell was rife throughout the summer, it still came as a welcome surprise when the Irishman finally arrived at the club’s Roundwood training ground after penning a deal on a loan return. “I had no idea that it was still on the cards, and then on deadline day he was in,” he admitted. “It is obviously a great addition to our side. He helped us a lot last season in what he did, how he plays and what he demands off people as well which is good. He has definitely lifted the quality of our squad.”

McCANN’S CHALLENGE TO ROVERS PLAYERS Grant McCann has challenged his side to build on their strong start to the Sky Bet League One season as the campaign enters its second quarter. Rovers sit in the play-off positions with 21 points from the opening 12 games, with a quarter of the league season gone, and McCann wants the same application from the

next dozen outings which would leave them in a strong position come the half-way stage. He said: “In terms of our first mini-cycle of 12 games we’ve had a tremendous start, we’ve seen how tough this league is with the top three all losing on Saturday. “This is when it matters now, these next 12 games. Teams can start pulling away from the teams below, and we’ve got to make sure that we are one of them.” Rovers were beaten by Fleetwood Town on Saturday in a frustrating match which saw the visitors take the points with some clinical finishing, but McCann has no doubt that the squad is good enough to maintain a promotion push. “I’ve I said to the group that we will be in that top six or so, 100 per cent. This is when the league starts to take shape. If we can get anywhere near the levels we have then we’ll be fine.”

CRAWFORD READY TO SHOW ABILITY Ali Crawford is looking to show Rovers fans what he can do after stepping up his recovery from a knee injury. The Scottish midfielder came on after 53 minutes against Fleetwood Town for the longest of his three substitute appearances after fighting his way back to fitness from his opening-day setback.

He said: “I am back among the squad now, in training and on matchdays, and hopefully now I can get a chance to start and take that opportunity when it comes. If the gaffer gives me that I chance I need to go and prove why I should be playing on Saturday. “He spoke to me the other day to say I have been doing well and looking sharp, it is just unfortunate the team have been doing so well. It is just that the other players have been doing so well, which is credit to them.” The former Hamilton Academical man has had to be patient, with six weeks on the sidelines, but says he has settled into life in South Yorkshire. He added: “It has been difficult as I got injured in the first game of the season, but apart from that it has been a good experience and moving down is something I had to do. “You just need to pick yourself up and get on with it after an injury like mine. It is good for me to come back into a team that is doing well, and hopefully that can help me as well.”

WILDER REFLECTS ON BIG WIN The Blades boss was delighted to see his side claim the win at Bramall Lane over Nigel Adkins’ Hull City. Chris Wilder described Saturday’s success over Hull City as ‘a really big win’. David McGoldrick scored the only goal

of the game from the penalty spot as the Blades moved to the top of the Sky Bet Championship going into the second international break of the season. And the Blades boss was understandably pleased afterwards, after watching his side make it four

consecutive victories and three in a week. He remarked: “That win gives us an enormous amount of pleasure as a coaching staff, because there were a lot of tired bodies out there. “We toyed with the idea of changing things up. We’ve had

substitute appearance in the week after battling back from a broken leg last November. “Three more points on the back of a hectic week is brilliant,” said the popular Scot. “We’re happy that we’ve finished it off well (after the

PAUL’S DELIGHT Paul Coutts made his Bramall Lane return on Saturday and was involved in the narrow victory over Hull City. The midfielder was introduced before David McGoldrick netted the vital penalty in the second half. It was Paul’s second

two away trips with a lot of travelling, Hull had two games with no travelling and an extra day recovery. “We really did have to get ourselves going and I don’t mind how we win games, but we showed an immense amount of character to get the right result and it’s a

really big win for us.” Wilder added: “We can’t always play at our best, but we have to get something from games, the clean sheet was fabulous and Deano made a terrific save. There weren’t many chances, it wasn’t free-flowing, but I though the crowd

were outstanding and pushed us on. “It was a tough afternoon, but the backing from the terraces was pleasing, it certainly helps and the noise at the end was brilliant and we’ve ended up getting the right result.”

LOAN EXTENSION United have agreed to the extension of the loan deal of Rhys Norrington-Davies at Barrow. The left-sided Welsh U21s international will remain at the National League side until the end of the season. Norrington-Davies, 19, has played five times since his temporary switch, including the 2-1 victory over Sutton United at the weekend. He is one of two Blades players on loan at Barrow, Tyler Smith has scored six goals in 15 appearances.

NINE BLADES CALLED-UP A total of nine Blades will link up with their respective countries during the forthcoming international break. Republic of Ireland duo John Egan and Enda Stevens have both been named in Martin O’Neill’s squad for their home Nations League fixtures against Demark and Wales, with the Welsh squad, who also face Spain, including Liverpool loanee Ben Woodburn. Oliver Norwood will once again link up with Northern Ireland for their double header against Austria and Bosnia & Herzegovina. Goalkeeper Dean Henderson has been named in the England U21 squad for their two qualifiers against Andorra and Scotland, with the first of those fixtures taking place at Chesterfield’s Proact Stadium. Development striker David Parkhouse is in the Northern Ireland U21 squad, whilst Rhys Norrington-Davies will link up with Wales in the same age group. Finally, Jordan Doherty has been selected by Republic of Ireland’s U19s and stopper Marcus Dewhurst is in the England U18s squad for their St. George’s Park double header against Sweden and the Czech Republic.

PROUD OF THE PERFORMANCE Owls manager Jos Luhukay was pleased with his side’s second half display against Bristol City, as a 2-1 victory for Wednesday puts them into the Championship play off positions. A Lucas Joao brace secured three big points for Wednesday, with Matty Taylor’s late penalty for the Robins not enough to dampen the Owls’ day.

Luhukay said: “In the first half I was not happy. “We were not in control and Bristol had too many chances, fortunately they did not put the ball in the net. “However, in the second half we played some very good football. “We created more chances and got the goals.” Luhukay explained his emotions at half time, given that the

winning team would enter the top six. The Owls boss was delighted with his players’ response, he added: “I said to the players, where do you want to be in the table? “Do you want to be near the top, or do you want to be near the bottom? Show me where you want to be. “My players gave the response I wanted, and I’m so proud of my team and proud of that performance.”

WE NEED TO CARRY ON LIKE THIS

With just one defeat in nine and into the top six for the first time this season, Fernando Forestieri says Wednesday must continue to push forward and work hard for the results. The Owls posted their third away victory of the campaign on

Sunday at Bristol City, with a second half double from Lucas Joao sealing the points. Following the travelling triumph, Forestieri said: “We are very happy with the win. We work very hard and we need to carry on like this.

“It was very disappointing at home, the draws with Leeds and West Brom, even though

they were top of the league. “We need to win. We came to Bristol and we knew they are a difficult team to beat.

But I am so happy we win and so happy with Lucas’ work, that he scored twice. “We need to carry on like this.”

REACH ON THE GOAL TRAIL After scoring two breath-taking goals in successive games at Hillsborough, Adam Reach says his target is to register double figures this season. The 25-year-old certainly has an eye for the spectacular goals and demonstrated that in back to back games v Leeds and West Brom in front of the Sky cameras. Now on four goals for the campaign, Reach has already equalled his tally from last season and says double figures is a realistic target to set, explaining:

“The two goals that went in last week have come from distance and that’s great but goalscoring is something I want to improve this season. “I’ll take a goal from a yard that hits me on the back of the head and goes in. “I’m sure any time I do pick it up from range, the fans who travel down to Bristol will be shouting shoot. “Like I said, I don’t mind if they go in from one yard or 25 yards but those two goals were special. “Double figures is what

I’d like to achieve and I don’t think that’s unattainable.” Other than those two Goal of the Season contenders, Reach has also netted in the trips to Sunderland and Reading in the Carabao Cup and Championship, respectively. He added: “I only got four goals last season and I think sometimes people assume it was more because of the quality of some of them. “I’ve already matched last season’s tally and like I say, I think ten is an attainable feat.”
