HANDS AND PAWS AT THE READY AS WORK STARTS ON NEW CULTURAL HUB Paddington Bear, one of Doncaster Museum’s popular exhibits, lent a paw as work started this week on Doncaster’s new Central Library and Museum – his future new home. Stood on library books with his trusty case, Paddington was joined by Mayor Ros Jones, Richard Stowell from Willmott Dixon and Gonzalo Carmona from Bond Bryan Architects to break the ground on this unique project in the heart of Doncaster’s Civic and Cultural Quarter. The new town centre library and museum will see the central frontage of the former Girl’s School in Waterdale beautifully restored and encased in glass to form an engaging experience and a high quality exhibition piece in its own right.
Ros Jones, Mayor of Doncaster, said: “It’s great to mark work starting on our new £15million library and museum in Doncaster’s town centre. Retaining the key architectural elements of the former girl’s school, it will be an iconic cultural hub which plays a vital part in the wider regeneration of the area and the delivery of our ambitious Urban Centre Masterplan. The scale and pace of new development in the town centre and right across our borough is staggering. Doncaster is really on the up.” Cllr Nigel Ball, Cabinet Member for Public Health, Leisure and Culture, said: “It is fitting that we are starting work during Libraries Week when residents can discover the ground breaking services our libraries have to offer.
There’s such a variety of things for adults and children to do at their local library. “We are creating a new central library and museum that raises aspirations and inspires people to learn and appreciate Doncaster’s wonderful heritage. Even our Paddington Bear exhibit has packed his case and is getting ready to move. “It will be a cutting edge building and accessible to all. With state of the art facilities and modern technologies it will transform our library services and cultural exhibitions. It’s going to deliver 21st century experiences that are fascinating and enjoyable for local people and visitors of all ages.” Willmott Dixon Operations Manager
Richard Stowell, said: “What better way to mark the start of a new chapter for Doncaster’s Civic and Cultural Quarter, than with Paddington’s help. “We understand how important it is to create cultural landmarks that inspire both children and adults; the educational and social benefits the project will provide to Doncaster will be incredible. We’re thrilled to once again work alongside Doncaster Council in delivering another important facility that will again help shape Doncaster’s exciting future and are committed to ensuring the story of this project is one that leaves a community legacy far beyond bricks and mortar. “Working with local supply chain partners wherever possible is an important way in which
we support the community. Having been awarded this year’s Queen’s Award for Enterprise for Promoting Opportunity, we are continuing to create local employment, apprenticeship and work experience opportunities.” Gonzalo Carmona, from Bond Bryan Architects, said: “Bond Bryan are delighted to be working in conjunction with Doncaster Council and Willmott Dixon Construction to ensure that everyone in Doncaster and the city region has access to a high-quality learning, training and cultural destination which will support the arts and cultural sector. They, like us, are committed to inspiring the next generation of artists, curators, collectors and visitors -
using Doncaster’s rich collections to spark curiosity and imagination through community cohesion.” The striking building set over four floors will become the new home of Doncaster Central Library,
Doncaster Museum and Art Gallery, Doncaster Archives and the Library Services for Schools. It will open in summer 2020. This Doncaster Council led project, was designed by Bond Bryan Architects
and is being built by Willmott Dixon.

MEMORIAL PLAQUE UNVEILED FOR THE LATE TRAMLINES FESTIVAL DIRECTOR SARAH NULTY A memorial plaque for the late Tramlines Festival Director, Sarah Nulty, was unveiled this week by The Lord Mayor of Sheffield Magid Magid, and Tramlines Operations Director Timm Cleasby at Devonshire Green – the original site of the Tramlines’ Main Stage in 2009. A Civic Award for Sarah from the Lord Mayor was also presented to Sarah’s mother Julie Voisey and former partner Christie Rossiter. The ceremony included tributes from the Leader of Sheffield City Council Julie Dore, and Richard Eyre, Head of City Centre and Major Events at Sheffield City Council. Both the memorial and the Civic Award have been
given in recognition of Sarah’s positive impact on Sheffield’s music scene and for her achievements in the wider music industry. Sarah sadly passed away at the age of 36 several weeks before the 10th edition of Tramlines. Sarah was instrumental in the launch of Tramlines in 2009 and by 2013, took on the role as Festival Director. She came to Sheffield as a student in 1999 and worked at Gatecrasher and Bed nightclub before going on to manage various venues and live music events around the city. Sarah dedicated her whole working career to the Sheffield music industry. After nearly two-decades, this work has led to massive
benefits for the city and she was the driving force of Tramlines for many years. Her tenacity, vision and unbreakable work ethic are the reasons that the festival celebrated its tenth anniversary in July this year. Tramlines Operations Director, Timm Cleasby said: “Sarah was a great friend and colleague and this is a fantastic tribute to her. This plaque is perfectly situated at the original site of the main stage at Devonshire Green and will evoke many great memories of Sarah when we visit it. We hope that it serves as both a lasting reminder of the incredible work Sarah has done over the years for Tramlines and the wider music scene in Sheffield, but also as an inspiration for
young women who might get involved in music too.” Sarah’s mother Julie Voisey said: “Sarah’s family would like to thank everyone for their kindness and support over the past few months and for all the heartfelt tributes we’ve received.
At age 18, Sarah chose Sheffield to be her new home and grew to love the city. Sarah was humble about her achievements and would be honoured to receive this recognition of her hard work and contribution to Sheffield’s music scene. We are so proud of what she achieved in the short time she was here. She was, and will always be, our Super Star.”

THIS WEEK In the News
Today, I saw someone waving and I wasn’t sure whether they were waving at me or at someone behind me. In other news, I was fired from my lifeguard job. It’s very rare that a defibrillator fails. But when it happens no one is shocked. My wife is furious at me for throwing a snowball at my son. On top of that, I’m also banned from the maternity ward.

My wife didn’t think I’d give our daughter a silly name... But I called her Bluff. Just spent £300 on a limousine and discovered that the fee doesn’t include a driver. Can’t believe I’ve spent all that money and I have nothing to chauffeur it. My mate James said “you should always quit while you’re ahead.” Great bloke James, terrible in the 100m. I went into the cake shop earlier, bloke said “all cakes £1.” I said “Can I get that one?” “£2.” He replied. “£2?” I asked. He said “aye, that’s Madeira cake.” I just failed a fire safety course when they asked what steps I would take in case of an explosion. Apparently “Bloody large ones” wasn’t an acceptable answer.

CALL FOR REGULATION ON PRE-PAY FUNERAL PLANS New figures obtained by ITV News show UK consumers spending billions of pounds for funerals before they pass away. Customers are eager to ‘buy before they die’, aiming to avoid the escalating cost of a final send-off. However bereaved relatives are calling for new regulation in this booming industry. The pre-pay funeral sector is growing so fast the Government is considering new rules to police the sector. At present there is no statutory regulation of the industry. Pre-plan firms are under no legal obligation to disclose what portion of your money they keep as profit or to cover their overheads. New figures from the Funeral Planning Authority show the sheer scale of the “pay before you die” funeral plan industry: 1.35m plans have been sold. 200,000 plans have been sold in the last 12 months. £4.3bn has now been set aside for prepaid funerals £3,185 is the average value of a funeral plan Graeme McAusland of the Funeral Planning Authority told ITV News: “I think funeral plans are a really good way for people to put in place the sort of funeral they want in a controlled and thoughtful way. “It allows people to manage the costs in terms of what the funeral is going to cost them.” Here’s how a funeral plan works: Pre-pay firms offer a selection of options, typically ranging between around £2000 and £6000. Once you buy, the pre-pay firm contracts
an undertaker. They guarantee that no matter how much funeral directors’ fees rise, you will get your final sendoff at today’s prices. The pre-pay firm administers the plan up until the time of your death – and beyond. As well as using your money to pay for the funeral director, the firm often retains a slice for themselves. A funeral plan doesn’t always cover the all the costs – for example a headstone or flowers may not be part of the package. They say this is a normal business practice, but it does mean that less goes to the undertakers than you paid into the plan. David Bulmer from Tamworth says prepay funeral firms need to be far more open about the sums they retain. His wife, Lyn, had planned and paid for her final send-off in advance with a company called Safe Hands. She paid in just over £3000, but David found out that £445 had been kept by the funeral plan firm as its own revenue – money that never went to the undertaker. David said: “If I’d known at the time, I’d have said to Lyn we’ll take that £3000 and put it in an account. I know the interest rate isn’t brilliant, but she wouldn’t have lost £400.” Pre-plan firms are under no legal obligation to disclose what portion of your money they keep as profit or to cover their overheads. The industry says consumers still get a good deal because they negotiate wholesale prices. Financial expert James Daley was hired by one funeral company to investigate the industry and found that the cost of admin
fees can vary from £200 for companies who are really modest and actually trying to do the right thing up to £600/£700 in other cases. The pre-pay funeral industry has grown so rapidly, there are fears that consumers’ understanding of them has not kept pace. Many plans specify a list of items not covered such as a grave plot, headstone, church service, wake and flowers. Other ingredients of a funeral such as cremation and burial fees are not always guaranteed to be paid in full - instead a contribution will be made. If those prices rise beyond the contribution, relatives could be left with a funding shortfall. James Daley said: “Make sure you are very clear on what’s included and isn’t included – and get it written down. Communicate to your family so those carrying out your funeral and organising it for you are very clear about what you expected”. The Funeral Planning Authority operates voluntary standards which cover 95% of plans sold. Graeme McAusland of the Funeral Planning Authority believes funeral plans are a ‘really good way for people to put in place the kind of funeral they want’. He believes the popularity of ‘pay before you die’ funerals will continue to climb and the FPA is reviewing its code including how potential shortfalls are explained. The argument for greater protections around pre-pay funerals is boosted by one simple fact: by the time they come to use the service they’ve paid for, customers wont be around to complain.

The company behind the UK’s best selling range of nuisance call blockers says that TalkTalk’s new call blocking service doesn’t go far enough to protect people in Yorkshire against nuisance and scam calls. TalkTalk has joined Virgin Media and BT in offering their customers the chance to automatically block incoming calls that are listed as unknown numbers at a cost of between £24 - £78 per year, however, according to CPR Call Blocker this doesn’t do enough to solve the issue of nuisance and scam calls. Chelsea Davies of CPR Call Blocker said: “This new service only offers a solution to part of the problem that is nuisance and scam calls. From working tirelessly to end nuisance calls since 2009 we know just how many callers will contact you from a number that isn’t withheld. With lots of ‘nuisance’ calls falling in to the grey area between what is legal and illegal, many companies see no reason to withhold their numbers and will continue to call you from an identifiable number. Also, many nuisance calls can come from people that you already know but do not wish to speak to. People who sign up to the new services will be paying an additional charge to only solve part of the problem. The best way to protect yourself is to sign up to the Telephone Preference Service (TPS) and buy a call blocker, like our ‘Shield’, for a one off payment and take control of your phone and privacy by being able to block any number you wish and not just unknown numbers.”
Just last year CPR conducted a nationwide survey with YouGov that revealed the true extent of the problem of nuisance calls in the UK, with their findings revealing that 90% of people in Yorkshire are receiving between 5-30 nuisance calls every single week and almost a fifth of UK adults admitted to being victims of a phone scam. The top five phone scams that people admitted falling victim to were a computer virus scam, a bank or HMRC scam, pensions and investment scams, lottery win scams and missed call scams. Many of these have continued throughout 2018 and are still popular choices for would be scammers. Chelsea continued: “The most popular scams that we still see reported include calls from scammers pretending to be from your bank or the HMRC demanding sums of money and using scare tactics to pressure people in to paying. In terms of nuisance calls we are still hearing a lot about PPI calls and utility companies calling people and these are the type of calls that will often be from a known number. The best things about our call blockers is the ability to block all types of scam and nuisance calls just by touching a button, as well as coming preprogrammed with a list of known nuisance call numbers that are already blocked.” The full range of call blocking devices start at just £39.99 and are available to view on sites such as www.amazon.co.uk.

SARAH NULTY OF TRAMLINES FESTIVAL TO POSTHUMOUSLY THE SENSATIONAL 60’s RECEIVE OUTSTANDING CONTRIBUTION AWARD EXPERIENCE RETURNS TO Gearing up for its fifth annual Festival Congress, the Association of Independent Festivals (AIF) has announced the shortlist for the 2018 Independent Festival Awards. The Outstanding Contribution Award will be posthumously given to Tramlines Festival Director Sarah Nulty, who tragically passed away after a short illness aged 36 earlier this
year. Taking place on Tuesday 6th November at 92 Burton Road in Sheffield, this year’s winners will be announced during an awards ceremony hosted by Glastonbury Festival’s Ben Challis, as part of the AIF’s annual flagship event. There are seven awards categories in total, designed to recognise the hard work and success of the most innovative events in

the industry, including ‘New Festival On The Block’, ‘Unique Festival Arena’, ‘Smart Marketing Campaign’ and ‘Live Act of the Year’. AIF CEO Paul Reed said: “The Independent Festival Awards are now an annual fixture and a true celebration of the creativity and innovation taking place across the independent festival industry” “It feels fitting in our first year in Sheffield to honour Sarah Nulty with the Outstanding Contribution award, not only for her tireless work ethic and incredible achievements with Tramlines but the wider contribution that she made to the independent festival world and what Sarah meant to our community. See you in Sheffield”. Tramlines Operations Director Timm Cleasby
said: “We are all so proud that Sarah has received this award and never was it more deserved. To be recognised by her peers for all her hard work, drive and determination, is a true honour to her memory, and to the legacy she’s left behind in Tramlines”. The Awards will be followed by an aftershow silent disco at Yellow Arch Studios. This year, AIF’s Festival Congress is expected to play host to over 400 delegates and will be centred around an ‘Under the sea’ theme as a follow up to AIF’s Drastic on Plastic campaign earlier in the year. The first day of the conference will take place at The Crucible Theatre, with the second day hosted at Showroom Cinema.

SHEFFIELD CITY HALL
Without doubt the most explosive 60’s show touring the UK, for one night only. With a brand new production for 2018. Six legendary names take to the stage and deliver to you a night never to be forgotten. With the definite feel good factor this is the must see 60’s show for 2018. Now more than ever-the genuine article- Mike Pender is the voice of The Searchers. One of the greats to have come out of the Liverpool “Beat Boom”. His is the rich vocal talent so evident on so many of the Hit recordings that have become 60's classics. Everybody - even if they only have a passing interest in 60's Music, remembers "Needles and Pins" - one of the greatest ever records to come out of the greatest ever period in Pop Music History! There were, of course, many other 'Hit' recordings that feature not only Mike's vocals, but also his equally distinctive 12-string 'jangly' guitar sound that became such a feature of The Searchers' recordings. With over 50 years of success in the business Mike is still touring worldwide performing The Searchers million selling hits such as Sugar and Spice, Sweets For My Sweet , Don’t Throw Your Love Away , When You Walk In The Room and of course Needles and Pins. Chris Farlowe. Originally Chris Farlowe and The Thunderbirds started out in the late fifties. Chris later moved on to perform all over Europe & still does to this day. His hits include classics like Out Of Time, Handbags and Glad Rags (which was also released by Rod Stewart as a single ) Mr Pitiful, All Or Nothing plus many more Herman’s Hermits throughout the mid-60’s music
scene proved to be a dominating force worldwide. From 1964 the band chalked up over 23 top 20 singles, 10 hit albums, 3 major movies. Hermans Hermits as of to date have sold 75,000,000 records worldwide. Their chart breaking hits include, Mrs Brown You’ve Got A Lovely Daughter, Silhouettes, There’s A Kind Of Hush, Henry V111, Something Is Happening & I’m Into Something Good The Swinging Blue Jeans have a history that spans back to the 1960’s. Over the years their hit singles ‘Hippy Hippy Shake’, ‘You’re No Good, ‘Good Golly Miss Molly and ‘Don’t Make Me Over’ have been the bedrock of the bands memorable live performances. The Dakotas were formed in Manchester in 1960. In 1962, at the suggestion of Paul McCartney and John Lennon, Brian Epstein teamed the band up with Billy J Kramer and they were signed up to EMI's Parlophone label. Their first hit was a Lennon/McCartney song, "Do You Want to Know a Secret" which reached No.2 in 1963. "Bad to Me" made the No.1 spot, then "I'll Keep You Satisfied" and "From a Window" both went into the Top 10. "Little Children" gave the band a second No.1 in the spring of 1964. The Fourmost gad their roots steeped in the eclectic 1960’s Mersey beat boom and was part of the Brian Epstein stable along with The Beatles, Billy J Kramer, Gerry and The Pacemakers, Cilla Black and others. The band has evolved from enjoying 1960’s chart hits such as Hello Little Girl, A Little Loving, I’m In Love, Baby I Need Your Lovin, Girls Girls Girls. BOOK EARLY TO GUARANTEE YOUR SEAT The Sensational 60s Experience Sheffield City Hall on Saturday 1st December. APPLY NOW FOR YOUR LICENCE TO RENT Landlords that don’t apply for a licence to rent out their properties by 1st November risk fines, penalties or even prosecution in certain parts of London Road, Abbeydale Road and Chesterfield Road. The new Selective Licensing scheme for the area comes into effect from 1st November 2018 which means that landlords must have a licence for every private rented property they control. The scheme is designed to make sure that
landlords can only rent out safe properties that are managed well. The Selective Licensing scheme is being implemented after a period of consultation with landlords, tenants, residents and business in the area. Many properties had been found to be in need of repair maintenance after inspections by council officers over a three year period. The deadline to apply is 1st November and only 50 landlords have applied so far. Each landlord must submit a valid application before the 1st November 2018 In August and September, landlords and properties in the area were sent application forms and guidance notes. Applications forms and guidance notes are also available online.
A two-staged fee applies, with £500 paid at the time of application and if forms are fully and correctly completed and all requested documents included and valid, a second payment of £250. Landlords that do not fully and correctly complete the form, do not provide all documentation required, or provide fraudulent information, will have a higher second payment of £500 to pay. Those that do not apply at all, or who have to be reminded, will pay a total of £1,500. Landlords that don’t comply will be liable for prosecution (as it will be a criminal offence) and/or financial penalties. Councillor Jim Steinke, Cabinet Member for Neighbourhoods and Community Safety said: It’s our responsibility to make sure that all private
sector tenants live in homes that are well-cared for and safe and that’s why this selective licensing scheme is so important. We’re urging landlords to apply now so that everything runs smoothly for both landlords and tenants in the area. If they have any questions or queries we’re asking them to get in touch with us as soon as possible so that we can help them with the application process. Any landlord who hasn’t received an application form or who has any questions should call Private Housing Standards on 0114 2734680. More about the Selective Licensing scheme, including a full address list of the properties included and how to apply for a licence, is at www. sheffield.gov.uk/laclicense

I was going to write about my continued I set up a commercial feeder rod, added a 5000 experiments with single hook pike rigs this series fixed spool reel loaded with 10lb line, and week, but after trying a different pattern, and slid a small Prestons Method feeder up the line. failing miserably, my exploration of the merits I like these particular feeders as the bead make it of a lone hook will be updated soon… when easy to attach a hook length, they fit the mould I’ve had chance to see what went wrong! In perfectly, and the feed stays where it should, view of that, this week, I made the choide to even on long casts. I selected a 9lb hooklink, cram in a session of commercial carp fishing armed with a size 10 hook (the maximum whilst before the impending Big Freeze. I hadn’t used Spotted Fin Boosted I fished a club water, a large open venue with Coarse Pellets before and wanted to combine plenty of double figure carp, but one which them with a pinch of prepared hemp from the has been struggling a bit recently. Indeed, a same stable, wet the lot with lake water with a competent angler I know had only four fish splash of Finamino bait soak added, and leave earlier in the week, and other reports hadn’t to go sticky. By the time I was ready to bait up, been encouraging, but I’d got a plan of attack the pellets were perfectly prepared, and smelled in mind as a result of reports and I wanted to delightful! prove it! I didn’t get out of bed until daybreak, I catapulted a couple of pouchfuls of 8mm I just couldn’t face setting up in the rain, but Premuim Coarse Pellets out to get fish grubbing on opening the curtains, I was greeted with about, squeezed the feeder into the pellet mix clear(ish) skies, and dry slabs, so I got dressed and then banded on an 8mm Catalyst wafter. I and made off for the venue determined to beat hoped that the sticky pellets would quickly break the rush. down, leaving my wafter target sitting enticingly I arrived half an hour later to find two cars in the middle; that was the plan! I’d tested the parked, one I recognised as belonging to George, pellets in the margin too, observing a break a ninety odd year-old angler who is always a joy down of approximately a minute, so quickly cast to speak to. Despite having several bits missing out, tightened up, and hovered expectantly over as a result of cancer and other illnesses, and the rod. As soon as it settled, the ‘tip trembled, artificial accoutrements added as a result of other pulled around sharply and returned to it’s maladies, George is always smiling. I hope I’m position as something explored the pellet clad half the angler he is if I’m fortunate enough to feeder. A few seconds passed, and the tip shot get to that age! We exchanged pleasantries, and round and I hooked my first carp of the day! I watched as his ‘tip bent around and an angry It powered off across the lake, my clutch slipping carp steamed off; his second bite of the morning. steadily as the fish took line. The first run George skilfully steered it to the waiting net, and stopped about twenty yards away, and as I took having noted a fine fish, I said farewell and set up the strain, I was disappointed to feel the line off down the bank to find a suitable peg… go slack, and I lost the first fish of the day! What I wanted to fish the quivertip. Often at this venue, made it worse was the fact that when I inspected the break, it was obviously my own fault. A curly I’ll set up a carp rod, attach the usual pear lead, ‘pig’s tail’ was evidence that my knot had failed, add a stick or pva bag of goodies, and sit it not my tackle. It is extremely rare for one of my out, but it bores me senseless sometimes, and I knots to slip, but in my apparent haste, it looked wasn’t in the mood. My intended plan of attack like I’d missed a turn; ahhh! didn’t lend itself to such tactics either, as I was A handful of 8mm pellets were fired out and going to go all out with pellets combining baits the feeder returned to its spot. Once again, I do know, with others I hadn’t tried before. A

the ‘tip trembled and then shot around within a minute, and a sharp kick as I lifted the rod told of a piscine combatant on the other end. Unfortunately, not the intended carp though, a slimy bream instantly surrendered and skated along the surface to the waiting net; at least I hadn’t blanked! Quickly returning it, I then slipped into the routine of catapult a pouch of 8mm pellets, drop the feeder on the spot, then flick a handful of pellets into the margin to my left…just in case. After an hour, a second arm wrenching bite had me scrambling for my rod as it slithered towards the water, and I quickly engaged with a double figure common carp which took a few minutes to subdue. The proliferation of double figure carp is exactly why I tackle up with 10lb mainline and 9lb hook links. I see anglers struggling to tame carp on 6lb line and lesser hooklinks and have lost count of the number of carp I’ve netted with hook links still attached from previous encounters. I once landed a carp with FOUR other hooks in it, two of which were hooks lost by pellet waggler anglers who had foul hooked the fish in the flanks as it fought for pinged pellets! For some reason, the cyprinids here fight like hell, so it pays to tackle up for them… just make sure your knots are good! Throughout the remainder of my six hour session, I landed fourteen double figure carp in total, the best a hefty fish of 17lb 12oz, a solitary bream, and also a freshwater torpedo, the barbel, at around 4lb. I’d alternated between open water
and my margin spot, picking off fish when I noted them swirl close by before returning the feeder to deeper water. Altogether, I reckoned a bag of 200lb wasn’t an unreasonable estimate, so I was very pleased to land fish consistently in blustery autumnal conditions which included drizzle, high winds and bright sunshine at different stages of the day. I’d kept my eye on other anglers on the far bank too, and noted that only odd fish had been caught, so I think my tactics and baits had worked well and I left the venue as the heavens opened and the rain came down hard. In my eyes, a big hit of fish, and getting into the van as the rain started to spot the windscreen was a fair October result! Now back to those pike rigs…

EFFORTS ONGOING TO SECURE FUTURES OF KEY PLAYERS, SAYS WARNE Rotherham United boss Paul Warne says keeping key players at the club for a prolonged period of time can be instrumental to his side’s success, as he continues to build for the future having sealed the services of forward duo Michael Smith and Jamie Proctor on long-term deals on Thursday. Warne has swooped early to tie up the duo, whose contracts were set to expire at the end of the 2018/19 season, and admits he is delighted to have them on board for the foreseeable future. The Millers chief continued to add that talks are ongoing with a number of players nearing the ends of their present deals and he is hopeful to have more positive news in the coming weeks. “My idea is to get and keep people who fundamentally get the club and who can perform,” Warne told www.themillers.co.uk. “That won’t change and like I’ve said, we’ve got other players we want to stay on board and hopefully the process will continue going and we can have more news. “It’s good that they’ve [Proctor and Smith] committed their futures to us and we want
MCCANN PRAISES CHARACTER Manager Grant McCann praised the character of his squad following their 3-2 victory on the road at Rochdale in Sky Bet League One on Saturday. Rovers returned to winning ways in the league following back-to-back defeats with the win at the Crown Oil Arena, and McCann felt his side dealt with everything that was thrown at them. “The boys were outstanding, it’s never as plain or as simple as you think, we have to dig in no matter who we play every week, Rochdale is a difficult place to go, it’s one of the toughest places in the league to come, so we knew what we were coming in to,” he said.

to give a bit of stability to the club. We don’t want to get to the summer and have our players’ heads turned, we’re trying to tie people up earlier where we can and those two were easy negotiations. “The fact that we’re trying to tie these lads on longer contracts, this early on, is good. We want to build the club and we hope to improve the squad every transfer window, but I think these two are a big part of what we’re trying to do, as are others. “We’re speaking to others and we’re trying to encourage other people to sign their longterm futures with this club. I think we’re in a really good position and the Chairman fully endorses what we’re trying to do and long may it continue.” Warne continued to draw comparisons from the successful teams in the Ronnie Moore years in which he and some of his coaching staff featured for a prolonged period, before going on to explain that continuity in the present day can be just as key to maintaining the high standards that he has set for his side in the second tier. “When we got promoted as players; me, Polly and Rich, we were all together for like six or seven years,” he added. “I think ideally the best players stay for long periods of time and other players have a golden spell and then move on. “There are certain players here who have been here for a while now and I think successful teams do have a similar backbone unless something is broken. I don’t think anything is and the lads are the best they can be at the moment and long may that continue. Woody has been here a while, Mattock has been here a while and Will’s been here a bit. I like to think they grow together and they improve.” “We had to deal with the elements and I think that we did that well, it wasn’t a day to maybe play our fluent best, but we scored three and they scored two, and that’s the main thing at full-time, we’ve responded now we’re back on track. “Paul Gerrard said in the dressing room after the game that he’s been at the club five years and he’s seen previous teams come here and concede to lose or draw the game late on, I think the result here shows the character in this squad.” Goals from Ali Crawford, Andy Butler and Jermaine Anderson saw Rovers collect three points at the Crown Oil Arena, and McCann was quick to single out his goal-scoring trio, particularly Crawford and Anderson following their first goals for the club. “I’m really pleased for the lads that got on the scoresheet today, I’m pleased for Ali to score after a great bit of play, also Andy Butler because he’ll tell you himself he’s not been at his best really either so that’ll boost his confidence too,” he added. “The deliveries for all the goals from James Coppinger were outstanding, especially for the third one, the build up for that was great to see, it was a good run from Jermaine and it was a great ball in from Copps to set it up. “For Jermaine, I think that’s his first goal in nearly two years possibly, he’s had a tough time with injuries recently, but he looked really strong when he came on, I knew I’d have to share the game between him and Ali, but they were both superb.” Rovers’ next home game at the Keepmoat Stadium is against Gillingham on Saturday October 20. Tickets are available from the Club Doncaster Box Office, on 01302 762576 or at tickets.clubdoncaster.co.uk.
SMITH ASSESSES START TO SEASON Rotherham United forward Michael Smith insists he and his teammates are reflecting on the opening to the 2018/19 campaign believing that they could have more points on the board. Whilst the Wallsend-born attacker admits that the Millers have made a commendable start to life in the second tier, he is of the opinion that the hungry group assembled by boss Paul Warne would like to have enjoyed an even more prosperous opening to the new season. “You look at the games we’ve had and we’re looking back thinking that we could have taken more points from some of them,” he told www.themillers.co.uk “I think as footballers and the kind of lads we have in the dressing room, we’re not disappointed, but we’re wondering what could have been. “We could have been much higher up in the table at this point but at the same time we’re going along nicely at the minute. “The gaffer has put that type of group together. Everyone wants to do better, everyone wants to progress and I think with nearly a third of the season gone already we have to keep looking up for the rest of the season.” The tireless style adopted by Warne’s men over the last couple of years has taken its toll on an injury-stricken squad and the 26-year-old, who has been playing with a groin problem, continued to add that the international break will give everyone a chance to recoup ahead another block of fixtures. “We’ll get a few down days. The groin injury that I’ve got is just inflammation so it’s nothing too bad, but the break gives it a bit of
COPPINGER PROUD TO BE A PART OF ROVERS Midfielder James Coppinger is proud to be a part of this Rovers squad after they got back to winning ways in Sky Bet League One. Coppinger provided three assists in Rovers’ 3-2 victory over Rochdale at the Crown Oil Arena and he is enjoying his football under Grant McCann. “It is a massive win for us and it was important that we bounced back after two league defeats, we were back to normal and we backed it up
time to settle down,” Smith added. “We haven’t spoken out loud about points targets in meetings. A few of the lads are looking at it like that and that’s certainly how I do it in my head and I always have. Whether its goals or getting minutes on the pitch I’ve always set little targets and I’ll keep doing that. “I think we’re trying to put the season into blocks in between the international breaks. When we get back to it we’ll look at the next series of games and try and put as many points on the board as we can.” Smith concluded by evaluating his own start to the new campaign, explaining that he knows that he will have to remain in fine form to fend off the advances of Kyle Vassell and Jamie Proctor, who are breathing down his neck for a place in the starting 11. “I would have liked a few more goals but I’ve enjoyed it,” he added. “It’s great playing at some of the clubs and stadiums in this league and they’re places that I’ve always wanted to play at. To test yourself against Championship defenders, who have been there and done it is great. “With Procs and Vass vying for a place you have to be on your game every week, even in training. That competition is something that I relish and helps to get the best out of all of us. “I’m enjoying it and you really do look forward to the games coming around. We’ve always enjoyed it but it’s a nice added bonus coming up against some of the country’s most historic clubs.”

I love playing football, it is my life, and I want to inspire other people. This group of players is a special group it is amazing to be a part of.” Jermaine Anderson, Andy Butler and Ali Crawford all hit the back of the net for Rovers in their first league win of October, and Coppinger had a feeling Crawford would score his first goal for the club against the Dale. “John Marquis is relied heavily on us scoring goals but in recent games those goals have been spread around the team, you saw it today with three different scorers,” he added. “Matty Blair has scored a few and had a really good opportunity to score as well but it does not matter to a certain extent who scores, as long as were picking up three points. “I am pleased for Ali Crawford and Jermaine Anderson for getting on the scoresheet, they’ve both had injuries this season and they have come back and impressed, I had a feeling that Ali would score.”

WILDER ON WOODBURN’S DEVELOPMENT Boss Chris Wilder insists Liverpool loanee Ben Woodburn still has a big role to play for the Blades this season. The teenager hasn’t featured for the Blades since last month’s stalemate with Birmingham City, but Wilder says that’s been purely
never had it with Jamal (Blackburn), Cameron (CarterVickers) or Ben this year. “It’s tough for Ben, it’s a first bump in the road for him, it’s his first loan, he’s only 18 and he’ll enjoy a great future in the game, but like everyone it’s down to him.”
The manager added: “I don’t want it to be easy for anyone, regardless of whether it is Ben at 18, Paul Coutts coming back, or Leon Clarke. “There has to be a level of trust between myself and the players and if we’re winning games and players are doing well, then they will

but we know Paul’s qualities, I enjoy playing with him and I hate coming off, but when I saw it was him coming on against Blackburn it brought a smile to my face. “We know the struggle he’s been through, he’s worked so hard to get back as quickly as possible and I was happy enough for him to take my place.”
Mark Duffy is delighted to see Paul Coutts back in firstteam action but is sure United’s midfield ranks are much stronger now than they were a year ago. The influential former Derby man has made two cameo appearances in recent victories over Blackburn and Hull
down to the form of those currently in possession of the shirts. He remarked: “The exposure out there about what Ben has done is beyond our control. He needs to get into the team like anyone else. “There is no pressure with any of our loan players, I’ve
and Duffy says is good to have him back. He remarked: “When we lost Paul last season it was a massive loss for us and if I’m being honest we struggled to replace him. “Obviously we’ve got Ollie (Norwood) in there now and he’s very similar to Paul and a quality addition, we’ve also got Paul
coming back into contention too. “We’ve got the likes of George (Baldock), Stears and Leon who haven’t been playing much recently though, so the strength is clear to see and it all bodes well for us.” Duffy added: “John (Lundstram) is another tremendous option and he’s only young,
keep their shirt. “If players are playing well they’d be disappointed to miss out, so it’s down to Ben to show
what he’s about and we’re in constant dialogue with Ben and Liverpool and everyone is happy with the situation.”

HARD WORK AHEAD - JOS Wednesday headed into the international break on a high with victory away at Bristol City and into
the top six for the first time this season. With the break now over, the Owls are gearing
towards another huge Championship test in the form of fourth-placed Middlesbrough.
Just three points separate the sides, who go head to head at Hillsborough in front of the Sky Sports cameras on Friday (7.45pm). Pleased with his side’s progress, Jos Luhukay says he is proud of his team’s work and wants to see further progression, explaining: “It is unbelievable how this team can work and fight and keep up the intensity with character. “Our last game at Bristol City, we had over seven minutes of
extra time to play so it wasn’t so easy but under the pressure, they were cool and with each other to clear every dangerous moment. “Now we have from our last nine games, five wins, three draws and only one
defeat and I think that deserves respect and I am proud of that. “We went into the top six for the international break but we have a lot of hard work ahead to do and must get better every game new.”
GOOD TO BE BACK Sam Winnall marked his return to action with a goal for the Owls Under-23s on Friday afternoon at Hillsborough. The 27-year-old fired Wednesday into the lead after 28 minutes of the PDL2 clash against Crewe, with
