RESIDENTS MAKE CLIFTON PARK A WINNER Rotherham Council is thanking residents as Clifton Park is once again voted one of the nation’s favourite green spaces. For the third year running, the popular park is one of just ten from 1,800 locations in the whole of the UK to be successful in Keep Britain Tidy’s “People’s Choice” Awards. It is the only park in England which has achieved this award for the last three years in a row. The Green Flag

scheme recognises parks which boast the highest possible standards, are beautifully maintained and have excellent facilities. The People Choice Award is an award voted for by the public and can only be awarded to a park that has already won a Green Flag. Clifton Park was awarded its eighth Green Flag this summer and the public were once again given the opportunity to vote for it as one of their favourite parks in the UK.

The park is one of Rotherham’s top attractions, with many families travelling from across the borough and beyond, to enjoy a day out within its delightful heritage landscape and the popular Clifton Park Museum. Visitors of all ages can enjoy the open spaces, beautiful gardens, tree-lined avenues, water splash, amusement park, adventure golf and even a land train to take visitors to the Museum and back.

Rotherham Council’s Cabinet Member for Cleaner, Greener Communities, Cllr Sarah Allen, said the award was testament to the hard work of the staff based in the park along with the dedication of the park’s “Friends” group. “Everyone works very hard behind the scenes to make the park so welcoming for visitors. The Friends of Clifton Park have once again provided invaluable support. All the

staff, volunteers and visitors should be proud of this achievement.” “We’re very proud of this wonderful accomplishment, especially as we’re the only park in England to have attained this award three years in a row. I would like to say a huge thank you to people who’ve played their part. This includes those who took the time to vote and helped the park achieve this wonderful accolade.”

TEN-YEAR VISION FOR PARKWOOD UNVEILED The Council is launching its 10-year draft masterplan for the Parkwood Springs site, which includes Wardsend Cemetery and the former Viridor Landfill site. The consultation on the draft masterplan, which will now be open to public consultation for the next six weeks, is proposing to create a higher quality public open space around a proposed outdoor leisure development by Extreme Destinations that offers a range of activities and visitor facilities. Parkwood Springs, home to one of the

only cemeteries in the country to be divided by a railway line, was formerly a medieval deer park. Now, Sheffield City Council has unveiled ambitions for the site to become a 150-hectare giant urban country park stretching from Wardsend near Hillsborough all the way to Neepsend. It outlines a vision for the whole of Parkwood Springs to align the ambitions of the local communities; plans for outdoor leisure development; the complicated history of the landfill site; and the needs of a growing

city particularly at nearby Kelham Island, Neepsend and Woodside where new homes are being developed or are being planned for. There will be consultation events at Sheffield Winter Garden on Thursday, 25 October and 12 November from 11.30am to 3.30pm, and at Shirecliffe Community Centre on Wednesday 30 October from 3pm to 7.30pm where people can discuss their hopes for the site, which rises steeply from the River Don and has superb view across Sheffield to the Peak District.

/THEMERCURYNEWSPAPER

Parkwood Springs has long been a prominent feature on Sheffield’s landscape, with uses as a medieval deer park, woodlands, railway, housing, allotments, Victorian cemetery and landfill sites. Wardsend Cemetery, which was transferred into the care of Sheffield Council in the 1980s, has under gone huge improvements and is now used as a venue for performance, heritage tours and nature events. It is the final resting place of Lieutenant George Lambert VC and many Victorian Sheffielders, including

photographer WT Furniss and victims of the Great Sheffield Flood of 1864. A six-week consultation on the Parkwood Draft Masterplan will run from Tuesday 23 October to Wednesday 5 December 2018.

You can have a look at the plans at: • Sheffield Winter Garden - Thursday 25 October and Monday 12 November, 11.30am to 3.30pm. • Shirecliffe Community Centre - 30 October 3pm to 7.30pm.

And getting the fundraising off to a great start, staff pedalled up almost £1,000 as they cycled more than 180 miles on a static bike in the store’s foyer. The challenge was the first of many events being planned by the store over the coming months. “We are so pleased that this very special partnership got off to such a great start and has already raised more than £1,400,” said St Luke’s Corporate Fundraising Manager Jack Kidder. “The Crystal Peaks branch of Sainsbury’s has a long standing relationship with St Luke’s and the money they raise during the coming months will make a massive difference to the lives of our patients and their families.”

1289 24/10/2018 FREE NHS EYE TESTS - ALL THE FACTS YOU NEED It’s recommended that most people should get their eyes tested every 2 years. If you’re eligible for a free NHS sight or eye test, the NHS pays for it and you won’t be charged. Your ophthalmic practitioner or optometrist may recommend you have an NHS sight test more often than every 2 years if you: • Are a child wearing glasses, • Have diabetes, • Are aged 40 or over and have a family history of glaucoma • Are aged 70 or over Why are eye tests important? Regular eye tests are important because your eyes don’t usually hurt when something is wrong. A sight test is a vital health check for your eyes that can pick up early signs of eye conditions before you’re aware of any symptoms – many of which can be treated if found early enough. What your eye test will show A sight test will show if you need to: Get glasses for the first time or change your current glasses A sight test will also include a general health check that can pick up early signs of eye disease before you’re aware of any

symptoms. Some health conditions can affect the eyes such as: • Diabetes • Macular degeneration • Glaucoma The way a sight test is carried out is governed by law. A sight test will identify: What your level of vision is and, whether you need glasses to correct your sight Your eyes and the area around them will be examined, to look for signs of injury, disease or abnormality. During your appointment, you may see more than one practitioner, for example: An optometrist or ophthalmic medical practitioner, who tests your sight to check the quality of your vision and your eye health, and a dispensing optician, who fits your glasses If you already wear glasses or contact lenses, remember to take them with you to your sight test. You may be asked to wear them during the test. Protect your eyes from the sun Getting out in the sun is important for your general health, but you have to be sure to protect yourself. Never look at the sun directly, even when something exciting such as an eclipse is happening. Doing so can cause

irreversible damage to your eyesight and even lead to blindness. Several studies also suggest sunlight exposure is a risk factor for cataracts. Wearing sunglasses or a wide-brimmed hat can help protect your eyes from UV rays. The College of Optometrists recommends buying good-quality dark sunglasses – these needn’t be expensive. Free NHS eye tests You’re entitled to a free NHS sight test if you: • Are under 16 • Are 16, 17 or 18 and in full-time education • Are 60 or over • Are registered as partially sighted or blind • Have been diagnosed with diabetes or glaucoma • Are 40 or over and your mother, father, sibling or child has been diagnosed with glaucoma • Have been advised by an eye doctor (ophthalmologist) that you’re at risk of glaucoma. • For further details and information see NHS website. www.nhs.uk/live-well/healthy-body/ look-after-your-eyes/

DON’T FORGET TO CHANGE YOUR CLOCK! LEADING LAW FIRM OFFERS FREE CLINICS We’ll soon need to go around the house adjusting our timepieces when the clocks go back one hour on the 28th October But we will get a dreamy extra hour in bed! Why do we bother changing the clocks? Initially it was rolled out to save energy and get people outside. Why waste electricity when there is perfectly good daylight to be used? The campaign for British Summer Time came about at the beginning of the 20th century. Moving the clocks forward in the summer months would give us darker mornings but lighter, longer evenings. The idea was proposed in Britain by builder William Willett, he was “incensed at the ‘waste’ of useful daylight during the summer. Though the sun had been up for hours as he rode his horse through Chislehurst and Petts Wood, people were still asleep in bed”. British Summer Time was adopted in Britain in 1916 to save fuel and money. Since then, Britain toyed with moving the clocks a number of times, including bringing them forward two hours ahead of GMT during the Second World War. They were also brought forward for periods in the spring of 1947, in line with fuel shortages. There was an experiment, between 1968 and 1971, which kept clocks one hour ahead of GMT all year round. Britain then reverted to our now familiar system of GMT in the winter and summer time in between March and October.

SMALL GRANTS FOR COMMUNITY GROUPS IN HILLSBOROUGH Do you work or volunteer to improve the health and wellbeing of the people in Middlewood, Wadsley, Hillsborough, Walkley Bank, Wisewood and Woodland? Could your group benefit from a small amount of additional funding to buy equipment, pay for room hire or host a community event? The Hillsborough People Keeping Well partnership have just opened a small grants fund to support community groups to do just that. Grants with a maximum value of £500 can be awarded to groups who support local people to achieve one or more of the following:

Is British Summer Time a good thing? Well, no one seems to complain about the extra hour in bed in the autumn. However, some are campaigning for British time to be brought in line with other European countries to reduce accidents. This would make it two hours ahead of GMT in the summer and one hour ahead in the winter. Nick Lloyd, road safety manager for the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA), said: “The clocks going back is a pivotal point in the year for road users, particularly cyclists and pedestrians, as there is less daylight in the evening at a time when with the weather is worsening. The statistics are clear – accidents and injuries can be reduced if we move to Single/Double Summer Time, and that is why RoSPA is urging the Government to take a fresh look at this issue and help save lives.” Others want to forego turning the clocks back. “One of the main reasons against keeping British Summer Time all year round concerns people in Scotland, where sunrise might not be until as late as 10am,” says Dr Dunn. “Among other things, this would mean children travelling to and from school in darkness, putting them at greater risk. Lighter mornings in the winter are also better for postal workers and those in construction and farming, who typically begin work much earlier than many others.” Others say we spend so much time inside – in offices, for instance – that daylight saving no longer really matters.

Sheffield law firm Irwin Mitchell will be holding its third multi-service pro bono clinic in the space of 12 months to help those who can’t afford or access legal advice. The clinic will take place on 1 November at the law firm’s offices at Millsands as part of Justice Week (29 October – 2 November), a new initiative set up by legal professional bodies the Law Society, the Bar Council and the Chartered Institute of Legal Executives (CILEx). The purpose of the week is to raise awareness of justice and the rule of law whilst further celebrating National Pro Bono Week, which takes place this week (22 – 26 October) to mark the free legal advice that law firms provide people and organisations with. Irwin Mitchell’s pro bono clinic will offer free 30 minute appointments with one of the team of specialist solicitors in a number of areas including medical negligence, commercial real estate, product liability and commercial litigation. Providing pro bono support to businesses, charities and individuals is a crucial element of Irwin Mitchell’s social responsibility work. SHEFFIELD IS OUT OF THIS WORLD With the arrival of Dr Who, Sheffield has had its fair share of alien activity this month, and now the city will be invaded by monsters, aliens, robots, ghouls and superheroes as Out of This World returns next Sunday. The festival, now in its fifth year, which celebrates all things out of the ordinary, will take over the city centre on Sunday 28 October. Now a much-anticipated date on Sheffield’s events calendar,

the festival attracts thousands of visitors to experience the very best of sci-fi, magic and Halloween. This years’ line up looks set to provide another eye-popping experience, with the best of the strange, spooky, stupendous and supernatural all on show. There will be plenty of surprises in store, including comic book characters, moviethemed cars, dragon and dinosaur puppets, live music, fairground rides

and even a giant dancing lobster. Attendees are encouraged to dress up for the occasion and in the past their efforts have not been disappointing, with many costumes looking as convincing as the attractions. Whether you’ll be in awe of sci-fi characters, amazed by illusionists or spooked in our Halloween zone, it’s time to get those costumes ready, and with Dr Who landing in Sheffield earlier this month, I expect we’ll be seeing a lot of bobs and braces amongst this year’s crowds. The event will once again be divided into three zones on the themes of sci-fi, magic and Halloween. The fast growing sci-fi, comic, gaming and fantasy zone, spread across the Winter Garden, Town Hall, Tudor Square, Millennium Square and the Peace Gardens will

be home to arcade and board games, comic book artists and displays. In this popular zone people can encounter their favourite heroes and villains including Terminator, Darth Vader, Stormtroopers, Batman, The Joker, a giant Stay Puft and of course the Marvel Superheroes. And for the first time Star Wars fans can go over to the dark side as they climb on to the Emperor’s throne and meet a giant-sized Jabba the Hutt. As well as character encounters, visitors can get hold of the latest figures, comic-con or gaming must-haves. Children will be able to meet cartoon and film favourites and spend time with Bakewell the Dragon as he sings silly songs and tells his dragon tales, add to this a mermaid floating on a sea sphere and A La Carte the giant Lobster for a whole load of memorable moments.

A programme of mystifying illusion and magic featuring some of the UK’s best magicians and illusionists will be on display in Town Hall Square. Acts include Dr Phantasma and his unusual and strange cast, Miss Elastina and the pain-proof man performing incredible and thrilling sideshow stunts and tricks with fire, swords, chainsaws and more, plus the Tent of Mystery and Professor Jon’s Flea Circus. Aspiring young witches and wizards can learn a few tricks in magic workshops that will be held throughout the day inside the Town Hall. MoorSheffield bring the Halloween zone to life, set up for younger children and families to get into the spooky spirit with just the right amount of scare. Mini ghosts and ghouls can enjoy freaky face painting, parachute games, monster mask

making, apple bobbing, dance shows and the classic caged mummy. And this year keep on the lookout for the dinosaurs, with the baby Triceratops and Brontosaurus – and if you’re brave enough you

may want to stoke the T-Rex. Barkers Pool, Tudor Square and Fargate will provide all the fun of the fair plus music and dance entertainment. Out Of This World, which is being run in conjunction with partners including MoorSheffield, Farrah’s Funfairs and Heart

Yorkshire, will run free family friendly activities from 10:30am to 5:30pm on Sunday 28 October. For everything you need to know about this year’s event go to the Out of This World webpage and join the event page on Facebook where there will be confirmed attractions and any news and updates.

ANGLER’S CORNER

with Clint Walker

After targeting carp last week, I’ve done much the same this week, taking a total of ten double figure fish whilst fishing the ‘tip. Why? In truth, I spent plenty of time during the session taking photographs for clients prior to scheduling on social media, and to accompany other forthcoming copy. As a full time angler and writer, I often have to plan weeks (if not months) in advance, and having a library of relevant images is of vital importance. I fished in company with a mate and was pleased to have a proper ‘subject’ for the required images, rather than the usual ‘selfies’! We storyboarded and took a huge number of images, so the trip was an opportunity to get some ‘in the bag’ for when times are hard and I need a specific image! Having the opportunity to get the images was a great help (thanks Andy!) but I couldn’t help but keep an eye on the weather, looking forwards to a predator session just two days later… I think that pike angling has, over the last few years, definitely become my favourite facet of angling, and at this time of year, it’s just an absolute joy to be on the banks. I wanted to continue my exploration of my single hook theory, so was keen to hit the banks at my favourite Stoke-on-Trent Angling Society club water with a cool bag full of deadbaits, and a head full of ideas! I arrived bright and early, and it turned out to be one of those mornings that leaves you simply stunned… I’ve been trying the single hook rig for a number of reasons, the main one being to offer a way for relatively new pike anglers to safely handle and unhook these fine fish without the anxiety of dealing with a pair of trebles. I know that many anglers would like to catch pike, and although information is readily available, it still boils down the fact that some anglers are terrified of being unable to remove deeply embedded trebles, and as a result, sensibly, have never fished for pike. I want to try and remove that fear from the equation, by proving that a single hook can work, that it has the potential to cause less damage, and is much easier to remove. So far, my findings have been encouraging… My first trial run with Kato circle hooks, purchased in Australia on a whim saw me miss my first run through my own fault, but then hit both subsequent takes, bringing a brace of double figure pike to the bank. Both fish were firmly hooked in the scissors, and because the barb had been crushed with long nosed pliers, both were safely unhooked within seconds; a good start. I wondered whether crushing the barb was enough though, whether things could be made even safer and resolved to try a different, barbless hook pattern. I used the same 35lb PikePro wire, twizzled the trace exactly the same way, and used an identical lead arrangement. The hooks to be

WRAGG FOOTBALL LEAGUE with A Royston

In the Premier Division Sheffield Academicals moved to top spot after previous leaders Fossils FC were defeated by Handsworth Parramore, Academicals had a 3-2 win against last seasons Champions Wickersley Old Village, Dorant 3 for the winners and Batchelor 2 (1 pen) for the Village. Elsecar Dynamoes were 4-2 winers against Crown & Cushion, Harling 2, Elkins and Nowell scoring. Handsworth Parramores 2-1 win over Fossils FC thanks to the goal machine Cartledge with two goals. HSBC Bank defeated Caribbean by 2-1 but it took a stunning 25 yard screamer from Brooks to grab the points, Hopkinson scoring the other goal, Thompson netting for Caribbean, Referee Henger had a brilliant game. Royston Oakwood still searching for their first point thought they had cracked it but Swinton Athletic had other ideas and snatched victory by 4-3, scorers for Royston were Hayward, Swallow and Dyson. In Division 1 Dinnington Town maintained top spot after they beat Rossington Main by 3-1 thanks to a hat trick from Toseland. Bullcroft S & P Vets went goal crazy against Penistone Church winning by 9-1, Thompson 2, Hodgson 2, a one each for Davis, Hardy, Warboys, Platts and an own goal, Penistone’s goal was also an own goal. Mosborough Trinity drew 2-2 with Scawthorpe Club, Anso and Williams for

used however, were not circle hooks, and this had a huge effect! My first four runs with the new hooks all ended in disappointment, with not a single contact felt with any of the protagonists, and each time, the bait was lost. Not only was I missing bites, I was getting through bait at an alarming rate! I don’t expect to re-use baits, but I don’t want to lose them every cast either! I wondered whether the missed takes resulted from smaller fish picking up baits and dropping them, but my deadbaits were only small roach, so considered this unlikely. Reverting back to the circle pattern immediately saw a double figure fish banked which went some way to proving it was the hook, not the bait size at fault. More food for thought, so another session beckoned… The club venue is padlocked, with entry forbidden before 7am, so just after, I unlocked the gates, and drove up to the car park to unload. All was quiet, despite a breeze being forecast, and as I sorted my gear, I looked across the reservoir to see the breaking dawn mirrored in the still dark waters. Every second brought new colours to the tableau before me, and as the sky lightened, a hazy mist was unveiled on the fields and woodlands surrounding the lake. The fog rolled slowly down onto the water until the sky and water became one; it was hauntingly beautiful, and a sight I’m struggling to describe with mere words… I couldn’t concentrate on setting up as the minutes passed and the scene became even more alluring; rarely have I seen such a stunning morning unfold. As the sun rose, the mist became backlit, and everything was coated in a golden glow. I took some simply superb images, none of which required any filters or editing, and they are already in the printers to go up on the wall! Such beauty instantly put me in a wonderfully good mood, and I couldn’t wait to get started again! Within a few minutes, both rods were tackled up, baits mounted on the circle hooks, and deposited into around fourteen feet of still, dark water. My bobbins were set, alarms switched on, and I sat back to absorb the surroundings. I noted a flock of lapwings wheeling together over the far bank, and high above, a buzzard being harassed by crows which sought to protect their nest. Behind me, a Jay paraded on the high wall, cackling, and I watched rabbits disturb the mist as they warmed up in the weak sunlight. It was one of those perfect mornings, and everywhere I looked, I saw something to delight me… Bleep. A single note grabbed my attention and I watched the white head of the indicator twitch upwards as the rod tip shook. I removed the line from the clip, and as it continued to disappear, wound down and lifted the rod, hoping to connect. I’ve found that a ‘strike’ isn’t required with circle hooks, instead I prefer to just tighten up until I feel the fish, but on this occasion, I felt nothing; the bait came back unmarked too, so I was unsure whether the bait had been picked up, or if the pike had just brushed the line. The roach was recast to the same spot, and as I replaced it in

Mosborough. Thorncliffe FC were 2-1 victors over Joker Over 35s Murphy scoring twice, and Summerville for Joker. Doncaster Over 35s won 3-2 away at AFC Dronfield, with goals from Wilson, Harriman and Cartledge, Chasemore with a couple or Dronfield. Hemsworth Miners were 7-3 winners against Hollingwood Club, Barrick 4, Moore 2 and Howcroft. Oughtibridge War Memorial were glad to record a win aganst Woodhoue West End by 5-2, Thompson 2, Gibert, Fretwell and Ashford all on the score sheet. Jubilee Sports won away at Dronfield Town by 4-1, Hepworth, Cooper, Dixon and Simmons. 45s Division 1 - Phoenix FC beat Elsecar Dynamoes by 3-2, Riley 2 and Hinchcliffe, Eaton and Galvin for Elsecar. the clip, it pinged out of my fingers as the bait was taken again. Once more, I wound down, and failed to engage with the bait stealer. Retrieving the bait, I inspected it for damage, and again could find none; now I was scratching my head! There was obviously a fish down in the depths, but why wasn’t the hook turning into its jaws, and why wasn’t the bait damaged? I discarded the roach, and threaded the hook into the tail of a new one, ensuring that the hook point was free of any scales, and was still sharp. It went back out into the same area, I felt it hit the lake bed, tightened up, and returned to my enjoyment of the morning. As I poured a mug of tea, another bleep preceded the red light of the alarm, and this time the indicator fell away as the fish moved off. Closing the bale arm, I let the fish run against the tension, then wound down to set the hook; fish on! I could feel instantly that it wasn’t a monster fish, but the pike gave a good account of itself before it slid into the net, the circle hook easily visible in the top jaw. The crushed barb had gone through, so rather than try to reverse the hook hold, it was simply exposed, then snipped off with sidecutters so that the hook fell out. Unhooked without getting my fingers anywhere near those teeth or gill rakers, and without causing any harm to the fish; easy! I missed the next couple of takes, then hit two more, leaving me with four missed, three hit which might not be seen by some as a good return. Personally, I’m not too disappointed. Since using circle hooks, in four sessions I’ve had six double figure fish from eleven runs with all of them safely and easily unhooked without damage, and in two of those instances, I’ve missed them through my own fault, so it could be scored as six from nine

which is a better tally. The other hook pattern has so far failed miserably, missing four from four, but I’m considering using a hair rigged bait to see if completely barbless hooks offer even greater ease. I’ve suffered no net traumas either, no flying trebles catching in the mesh, and certainly no deep hooked fish nor awkwardly snared pike with a treble in each jaw. The circle HAVE made things much simpler, and in future, it will be only single hook rigs for me from now on. So, there you have it. My investigations thus far lead me to believe circle hooks are effective, are far easier to remove, and have less potential to cause harm to either me or the predators. If you have never tried pike angling because of a healthy disdain for trebles, then why not check out the Pike Anglers Club handling guidelines, find an experienced angler with whom to go, and try my single hook rig? You may be pleasantly surprised!

The County Senior League returned to league action, after a week of the majority of teams taking part in County FA cup action. On Saturday there was a full fixture list, with 18 games taking place over the three divisions. Premier Division Due to a quirk in the fixture list, the top two in the Premier Division met for the second time in three weeks on Saturday. Last time out second placed North Gawber Colliery came out 4-1 winners at home to league leaders Dodworth Miners Welfare. This time the two sides met at Dodworth and played out an exciting 2-2 draw. The draw means Dodworth still lead the way by two points after 10 games. Third placed Stocksbridge Park Steels Reserves are now four points behind the leaders, after they beat South Kirkby Colliery 4-2 at the Look Local Stadium. Richard Adams, Adam Shepherd, Luke Townsend and Lewis Whitham were all on target for Stocksbridge. Just two points further are Penistone Church Reserves, who impressively beat Handsworth Parramore Reserves at the Memorial Ground. Just below Penistone on goal difference are defending champions Swinton Athletic. A goal from Enzo Guarini gave Swinton a 1-0 win over Jubilee Sports on Saturday. After one win in their first three games, Swinton are now unbeaten in their last six. Frecheville recorded the second 5-0 win of the day, with a victory over Hepworth United at Far Lane. Frecheville’s win ends a run of four straight defeats for them. Goals from Steven Ellor, Sam Hutton and substitute Neil Spruce gave Denaby United a 3-1 win over High Green Villa at Old Road. Oughtibridge WMSC beat Wombwell Main 3-2 in an entertaining affair duel at Wombwell Main Cricket Club. Oughtibridge climb above Wombwell with the win into a mid-table position. Division One It was third place versus second at Gosforth Fields, with AFC Dronfield hosting Burngreave FC. Burngreave, one of two sides with a 100% record in Division One, lost that record on Saturday, as they were held to a 2-2 draw. Ecclesfield Red Rose 1915 are the other side with a 100% record,

however they retained it this week as they beat Kiveton Park 3-1 at home. Ecclesfield lead the way on 24 points, with Burngreave on 22 and Dronfield on 17 but they have played a game more than their rivals. Caribbean Sports had been in fantastic form (five games unbeaten) before a loss to Kiveton Park last time out, however they back to winning ways this weekend, with a 4-2 home win over Sheffield Medics. Hemsworth Miners Welfare Reserves were the biggest winners of the day, as they swept Millmoor Juniors with a 9-0 victory. Reece Hicks scored a hat-trick for the hosts, with Luke Chestney (2), Will Kemp (2), Connor Williams and Greg Hunter also on target. After a tough September that saw them lose five games in all competitions; Houghton Main have bounced back nicely this month. A 4-1 away win over Sheffield Bankers makes them three games unbeaten and up to eighth in the table. Also having a good September are Brinsworth Whitehill. They drew 1-1 away against Denaby Main on Saturday. Brinsworth are second bottom still, but have taken all five of their points in their three games this month. A brace from Billy Smith gave Wombwell Main Reserves a 2-1 win over Boynton Sports at Killamarsh Juniors Football Ground. It is Wombwell’s first away win since 1st September. Division Two Wombwell Town sit atop Division Two after a 2-1 away win over Ardsley Athletico Juniors. It was two goals in the first 30 minutes for Wombwell from Nathan Kendrick and then Luke Norbury that gave them victory. Sheffield Union are just two points off the lead after another impressive performance, this it was 6-1 away win over Caribbean Sports Reserves. And another two points back in third are Stocksbridge Park Steels Development, after their 2-1 home win over Dodworth Miners Welfare Reserves. Goals from Przemysław Madrawski (2), Aleksander Rutkowski, Aleks Synał, Patryk Żukowski and Łukasz Świderski gave United Worksop an impressive 6-1 away win over Thurcroft Miners Institute. United are up to fourth with the win.

SHEFFIELD DIVING CELEBRATE SUCCESS AT SOUTHAMPTON INVITATIONAL Sheffield Diving attended the first age group competition of the season in Southampton recently. A squad of 17 divers travelled to the event, some participating in their first Age Group competition on a chaperoned trip away from home. The opening day saw 8 Sheffield divers achieving new Personal Best scores, with 8 reaching finals in their events, winning a total of 5 medals between them: 3 silver and 2 bronze. In the Boys Group C 3m springboard finals, Arthur Turner-Rowe improved on his qualifying position of 3rd to claim silver, whilst Nathaniel Greig dived impressively in his second and third dives to take the bronze. Steady dives from Oscar Willcox in the Boys D 1m springboard finals earned him the silver medal, with Lewis Neilson doing well to come back from fifth place to achieve bronze. The final silver of the day was well won by Phoebe Prescott in the Girls Group D platform event. Agonisingly, Katie Garner was pipped to bronze by a mere 0.05 points in the Girls C 3m springboard final. Day 2 begin with bright sunshine and ended with a further 5 medals in the bag for Sheffield, including their first 2 golds, 2 more silvers and another bronze. 11 new Personal Best scores were achieved, with 11 divers reaching the finals of their events. Arthur Turner-Rowe and Nathaniel Greig dominated the Boys C 1m preliminaries, coming in 1st and 2nd respectively. In the final later,

Turner-Rowe settled for 4th whilst Greig took a well-deserved gold with the help of the dive of the day – an inward 2½ somersault with tuck scoring a whopping 55.80. Lewis Neilson, Oscar Willcox and Archie Biggin took 1st, 2nd and 3rd respectively in their Boys D Platform preliminary, with Oscar going on to take gold in the final. Phoebe Prescott consolidated her 2nd place in her preliminary with silver in the Girls D 3m competition; Amelia Scott improved on 4th earlier to win bronze in the Girls B Platform event; and the diver of the day was Nathaniel Greig who won his second medal of the day and third of the meeting, stepping up from 3rd in the preliminary to silver in the Boys C Platform final. The last day brought further success to Sheffield, with a gold medal and a bronze bringing the final tally to 12. In total, 9 divers reached the finals of their events, meaning that Sheffield was represented by at least one diver in each of the day’s 5 finals. 5 divers achieved new Personal Best scores, most notably Callum Bell, who smashed his previous PB for 6 dives on 3m by an impressive 45.70. The medals came in the Boys D 3m competition, in which Lewis Neilson won his second bronze of the meeting and Oscar Willcox his second gold. Willcox stood out as the Sheffield diver of the competition, bringing home a superb two golds and a silver. Charis Bell, Hannah Blake, Daisy Fowler, Lily Godbole, Sophie Hancox, Millie-Rose Hartley, Finlay Morris and Alice Prescott also made solid and important contributions over the three days. Commenting on the squad taking 2nd place in the team rankings, Sheffield Diving coach Sam Hydes said, “The competition was a great curtain raiser to our season. Sheffield Diving’s quality shone through, with special performances through the weekend, especially from those who were on their first chaperoned trip.”

DERBY DEFEAT FRUSTRATES BOSS Chris Wilder acknowledged his side need to be ‘better in the key moments’, following Saturday’s loss against Derby County. Chris Basham cancelled out Craig Bryson’s first minute opener at Pride Park, but Jack Marriott won it for the Rams in the second-half, to leave the Blades boss frustrated. And he pulled no punches afterwards, remarking: “I won’t dress it up at all, we’ve lost the game of football and second-half we didn’t do enough with or without the ball to get a result, it’s as simplistic as

that. “They’ve won, we’ve lost there’s nothing else that needs to be said really, it’s pointless saying about a load of other things. “I don’t think we should have lost the game, but we have. We have to be better in the key moments, if we are to carry on adding to our points tally like we have done. “I’m straight down the middle, we’ve lost, I’ve said to them it’s nonsense people saying it was a great game, it isn’t when you lose, it’s fantastic if you win.” Wilder added: “I’m always hard nosed and you have to be. People aren’t putting

arms round my uncle or brother, or fans who have to go to work after a defeat. “I’m not going to go putting my arm around them, they’ve lost the game. Defend properly, stop the cross and track the runner. “When we are at the top of the pitch, the likes of Duffy and others need to be better and finish off good play. “In big games players need to come up with the goods, we’ve not been appalling, it’s not a particularly bad performance but it’s a loss and we need more from the players.”

STEVENS REMAINS UPBEAT Enda Stevens believes the Blades need to ‘manage’ games better, particularly away from home. Speaking after Saturday’s reversal at Derby County, the

Republic of Ireland international admitted a below par secondhalf showing proved costly at Pride Park. He commented: “It was disappointing, we got off to the worst start possible, conceding in the first minute. “But for the remainder of the first-half we really got hold of the game and put Derby under some serious pressure. “We deservedly got ourselves back on terms, but we didn’t repeat the first-half showing in the second period, we struggled to get back up to the tempo and that was

frustrating.” Stevens added: “It was one of those games, we need to manage situations better, you can’t keep such an high intensity going for 90 minutes, so we perhaps needed to keep hold of the ball better and frustrate them. “Unfortunately we got caught, conceded a poor goal and there was no way back. “We don’t want to have those slow starts that we had at the beginning of the season, we’ve set our own standards and we must build on what has a really good start.”

BEATEN BY THE BETTER TEAM Jos Luhukay said the Owls were beaten by the better side as Middlesbrough emerged triumphant by the odd goal in three at Hillsborough. Wednesday rallied late on as another Adam Reach stunner halved the deficit but Luhukay conceded that the best team won on the night. He said: “There is no doubt that Middlesbrough were the better side this evening. We pulled one goal back late and might even have

got an equaliser near the end from Barry’s corner. “Although both their goals came from mistakes of our own, they were the better team and deserved the win. “But I would have taken the point for sure because as we saw here recently against West Brom, you do not always get what you deserve in football.” The Owls boss added: “This was always going to be a difficult game as Middlesbrough are a big, strong side at

both ends of the pitch. “They defend set pieces well and are strong on the counter. I thought we dealt with this okay and it was our mistakes that cost us the game. “Now for me it is very important that we respond in the correct way at QPR on Tuesday. “This is a big game for us and I want to see a better performance because successive defeats will see you slowly move down the table.”

FRUSTRATION FOR WINNALL Sam Winnall has been hit by a fresh injury setback. The striker made his second appearance for the Under-23s

on Saturday at Hull, where he picked up a hamstring problem. Wednesday manager Jos Luhukay expects Winnall to be out for

the coming weeks and explained: “Sam played 70 minutes but he had a problem with his hamstring and will

not be available for a couple of weeks. “It’s very disappointing for Sam. He came close to getting back in the first team but he has another injury now. “We must have a lot of patience and try to
