FOOD IN CRISIS CHRISTMAS APPEAL Rotherham Council is once more supporting the Food for People in Crisis Appeal this Christmas. Whilst most of us will wake up this Christmas to a house full of presents and a table laden with food, some people within our communities face a bleak prospect. The rising costs of living, combined with rental increases, stagnant wages and new benefit schemes mean that for some families there’ll be little food to eat and no gifts to unwrap. It’s not only

unemployed or homeless people who find themselves in this terrible situation; older people and more working families are finding it increasingly difficult to pay all the bills and still have enough money to put food on the table. Insecure or seasonal work, an unexpected expense, illness, or just a change in benefits or circumstances can often tip people into crisis. Christmas can also be a particularly hard time for some families as the extended school holiday place

extra strain on those financially stretched as they struggle to pay the extra food costs normally covered by school meals. Treats and festive food are a luxury some just cannot afford, as more and more families face the difficult task to provide the basics needed for survival. Rotherham’s Food for People in Crisis (FiC) Partnership has launched its annual Christmas Appeal for 2018, asking Rotherham residents and businesses to help where they can by donating food and toiletry

items at various public donation points throughout the Borough, or by making a monetary donation to the appeal. The FiC Partnership consists of a number of organisations working across the Borough to help people deal with crisis situations by providing them with food, whether it’s a parcel to take home or a cooked meal, as well as other forms of support and help. Shafiq Hussain, Deputy CEO at Voluntary Action Rotherham and

Chair of the FiC Partnership said: “It’s a sad fact that some people struggle to find the money to buy food and pay for other necessities. The Food in Crisis Christmas Appeal is an opportunity for the kind and generous people of Rotherham to come together and make a real difference to the lives of those who, for whatever reason, find themselves in crisis in our community. Every donation, no matter how small is welcome. We are planning to collect the donations at the

end of November, so they can be sorted and distributed to groups who provide the food parcels in early December.” Confirmed public donation points for non-perishable, indate, food and toiletry items are: • Aston Library and Customer Service Centre • Aston Park Fire Station • Dearne Fire Station • Dinnington Library and Customer Service Centre • Maltby Customer Service Centre

• Maltby Fire Station • Rawmarsh Library and Customer Service Centre • Rotherham Fire Station • Rotherham Metropolitan Borough Council, Riverside House • Rotherham Metropolitan Borough Council, Town Hall, Rotherham • Swinton Library and Customer Service Centre • The Advertiser, Howard Street • The Lifewise Centre, Hellaby • Voluntary Action

Rotherham • Wath Community Library • Wickersley Community Centre and Library

If you would like to request a donation box to collect food and/or toiletry donations at your place of work or event, please contact Voluntary Action Rotherham. Donation points will be active until Friday 30 November 2018.

Howard Hour, and his global smash Netflix special Recalibrate, Russell is back on stage where he belongs, making sense of a world that’s spinning out of control. It’s time for Respite. “it’s thrilling to see Howard with fire in his belly” - Metro “world domination is looming… he has grown darker, angrier and more satirical on stage. ALBERT SNODGRASS 6:30 is the best time on a clock. Hands down... What do you call a dog with no legs? It doesn’t matter, it’s not going to come. My friend is giving away free guitars. No strings attached. My doctor told me to take up an activity that gets me out of the pub. So I’ve started smoking. I slept like a baby last night... I spent half the night crying and then soiled myself. My ex texted me, “Wish you were here.” She does that every time she walks through a cemetery. A teacher asks a student, “Are you ignorant or just apathetic?” The kid answers, “I don’t know and I don’t care.” I came home from the pub really drunk last night. As I staggered into the living room and sat down on the sofa my wife looked at me and said, “Can’t you just go out and have a couple of drinks?” “Of course I can,” I replied, standing back up. “Just let me get my coat!” How easy is it to impersonate Victor Meldrew? a) Don’t b) Leave it My son didn’t cope well with going to jail. He refused to eat or drink anything. He swore at everyone and covered his room with his own faeces... After that we never played Monopoly again!

ISSUE

1292 14/11/2018 CHRISTMAS DOESN’T HAVE TO COST A FORTUNE! This week we look at advice from Martin Lewis on the best ways to budget for Christmas! He says “We cover everything from budgeting for the big day to how to get cheap fancy perfume and when to book train tickets in advance.” Don’t plan the perfect Christmas - first work out what you can afford Consider this: many list every lusted-for item, gifts for all, and a corking meal, then only afterwards consider: “How will I pay for it?” That’s a recipe for ending up in debt. Instead, calculate your budget, and ask: “What can I afford to spend on Christmas?” Christmas is one day – don’t ruin the whole of the next year for it! Agree with friends to ban unnecessary Christmas presents Consider not giving this Christmas. We’re not talking about gifts from parents or grandparents, but the ever-widening circle of friends, extended family and colleagues. Christmas isn’t a retail festival – we need to end obliged giving and think about what we’re giving, to whom and why. Remember gift-giving creates an obligation on recipients to give back, whether they can afford it or not. For some, the gift of “not obliging you to buy for me” is actually better. You could always make a No Unnecessary Present Pact (NUPP) with friends, or at least agree to a Secret Santa or £5 to £10 cap on gifts. Give charity gifts Want to give, but don’t want to waste cash on tat? Gifts start from a few pounds and include school supplies, clean water, livestock, polio vaccines etc. Haven’t used it since last Christmas? Sell it. Selling via eBay’s a good way to start or there are now plenty of local selling sites on Facebook, etc. These can also save on the hassle of post and packing. Buy a cheap turkey.

“It’s Christmas! We need the best!”, is the battle cry. Everyone raids the supermarket shelves. On Martin’s TV show he held a blind taste-test party for nurses at a hospital with champers, turkeys and more. They preferred the lower-brand goods (or couldn’t tell the difference) 62% of the time. So, don’t be a retail snob. Taste with your tongue, not by looking at the packaging. And buy what’s right for you, not the shop. If you’re planning a big shop, go to Mysupermarket and it’ll compare the cost of goods at the big online supermarkets. www.mysupermarket.co.uk/ 50 Festive Fivers. Gifts that cost so little Inspirational ideas included 12 Dates of Christmas, a date night package for someone you love – from a picnic in the park to a candlelit bubble bath. Or how about a homemade vinyl wall clock, or personalised e-reader case? Presents don’t have to cost a lot. Whether it’s a ‘massage’ for your loved one, babysitting or letting the kids have a sleepover, your time could be the best present. So pledge to do something nice, not spend, by printing our free Christmas gift cheques. See 50 Festive Fivers for the full list. Be wary when buying gift cards If you’re considering giving gift cards or vouchers there are few things you should be aware of: Retailers go bust – A host of big name retailers have gone into administration in the past year. When this happens, they usually stop accepting cards altogether and there’s very little you can do to get your money back. Gift cards have expiry dates – Most gift cards must be redeemed within a certain period of time, so the recipient needs to spend them before time runs out. They could forget or lose them – Often

CARBON MONOXIDE KILLS - BE AWARE! Households in South Yorkshire need to be more vigilant against the dangers of carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning as a survey reveals two thirds of people have not installed a CO alarm to protect themselves, suggesting the very real threat is not being taken seriously. The warning comes as part of this year’s Carbon Monoxide Awareness Month (November 2018), a national campaign highlighting the risks of CO poisoning which kills more than 50 people and hospitalises over 4,000 every year. CO is produced when carbon fuels don’t burn properly and any type of heating system where combustion takes place can potentially give off the odourless, colourless gas. CO poisoning can result in severe long-term health problems, or even death, with younger and older people most at risk. Key symptoms to watch out for are tiredness, dizziness and headaches. In support of the campaign, OFTEC, the UK trade association for the oil heating industry, is promoting the simple ABC safety checklist which advises households in South Yorkshire of the key steps they should take to reduce the risk: • Alarm Purchase a CO alarm (usually around £20) for every room which has a fuel burning appliance e.g. boiler, woodburner, open fire etc. It is mandatory for private landlords to provide an alarm in rented

people forget to use them, lose them or accidentally run them through the wash. Taking into account all of the above, we think giving cash is a much better alternative to gift cards. If, however, you still want to buy one there are some multi-shop gift cards, such as One4all and Love2shop, which you would be able to use at other retailers in the scheme, if one shop went bust. Remember, children aren’t retail snobs Young children don’t value your gift based on price – they often seem more interested playing with the wrapping. So don’t pay out unnecessarily. Also see Santa fly across the skies on Christmas Eve, available from 1st December, www.noradsanta.org/ Christmas is often a time for family and friends but if yours are a long way away, save on the phone costs and talk for free anywhere in the world over the web or on a smartphones app. Grab end-of-sale bargains Grab discounted giftwrap, Christmas cards, baubles, decorations in January. By the first week of January 2015, in a poll of 9,000 MoneySavers, 63% had already bought Christmas 2015’s cards and wrap, 27% crackers and 19% decorations. A typical family spent £751 on Christmas 2017, according to YouGov. Yet many struggle to pay and end up borrowing. Christmas shopping on impulse is dangerous. Make a list and stick to it. Shops spend a fortune trying to get you to spend – a list helps you stop this. Remember – just because it’s discounted doesn’t mean it’s a bargain!

GUIDE TO WORKING

MEN’S CLUBS GRAB YOUR COPY FROM THE MERCURY 84 HIGH QUALITY PAGES OF CLUBLAND STORIES, PICTURES, ACT PROFILES AND AN AMAZING DOCUMENTATION OF THE WORKING MEN’S CLUB MOVEMENT.

Are you a current smoker who wishes to stop smoking? Would you be interested in being supported in your stop smoking attempt by an experienced advisor and use either e-cigarettes or the NHS stop smoking services? Then contact us! Sheffield Hallam University is undertaking an ethically-approved study, funded by Heart Research UK that will explore the effects of e-cigarettes on the arteries and small veins in people making a stop-smoking attempt. All participants will be randomly allocated to one of the three study groups. In the first group, participants will receive free nicotine-rich e-cigarettes and refills for a 3-month period as well as advice on how to successfully stop smoking. In the second group, participants will receive similar advice as well as complimentary, nicotine-free e-cigarettes and refills for a 3-month period. Finally, in the third group of participants will be referred to the NHS stop smoking services and will be reimbursed by the research team for their stop smoking prescription expenses (or will receive £30 of Love2Shop vouchers if they don't pay for prescription costs). Participation in the study will be free and assessments will take place in Collegiate Hall in Collegiate Crescent Campus of Sheffield Hallam University. Participants using their own transport will receive complimentary parking, and all people who will take part will receive a free health check-up as well. Tramlines Festival launches new phase of weekend tickets priced at £65.50 with exclusive Christmas gift. Now available from www.tramlines. org.uk

priced at £65.50 (plus booking fee), and with every purchase comes a free, Tramlines branded bobble hat. As we approach the season of goodwill, Tramlines aims to keep noggins warm this winter, as well as keeping true to its ethos of being one of the best-value festivals around – expect these tickets to fly! Tramlines Festival will return for its 11th edition from Friday 19th July – Sunday 21st July to Hillsborough Park in Sheffield. Whilst the lineups are still under wraps, based on previous years, a credible and genre-

spanning bill will be in order. Public Enemy, Sister Sledge, The Libertines, Dizzee Rascal, Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds, De La Soul, Metronomy, Primal Scream, Catfish and the Bottlemen, Blossoms and Stefflon Don are just a few of the past highlight performances. With the diverse amount of music on offer over four stages, and the variety of activities such as an outdoor cinema, comedy lineup and quirky areas such as Into The Trees, it’s clear to see why the Tramlines 2019 Early Bird tickets sold out in record time.

Tramlines Festival remains exceptional value for money with a three-day weekend ticket now priced at £65.50 plus booking

fee. Along with the free festive gift, this year’s must-have winter warmer, expect this Christmas phase to sell out in no time.

Buy for loved ones this Christmas before they’re all gone! For all the latest news and updates, follow Tramlines

Legally Blonde The Musical follows the transformation of Elle Woods as she tackles stereotypes, snobbery and scandal in pursuit of her dreams. When Elle’s high school boyfriend, Warner, dumps her and heads to Harvard, claiming she’s not “serious” enough, Elle takes matters into her own hands, crafting a showy song-anddance personal essay and charming her way into law school. Befriending classmate, Emmett, and spunky hairdresser, Paulette, along the way, Elle finds that books and looks aren’t mutually exclusive. However as Elle begins outsmarting her peers, she realizes that law may be her natural calling after all.

MERCURY M T RS CITY UNITES AROUND BOLD ACTION TO MAKE OUR AIR CLEANER AND SAFER

The council is not proposing to charge private cars. After government demanded a clean air feasibility study over high-polluting parts of Sheffield and Rotherham, residents are set to be consulted in the new year over proposals that could Sheffield City see a charging system Council has this week introduced on and within announced plans to the inner ring road. create a “clean air zone” The charges will only which could include the apply to the most introduction of charges polluting vehicles such as for non-compliant high- buses, taxis, lorries and polluting vehicles using vans. Sheffield Council is seeking government the inner ring road.

funding to support affected businesses and taxis upgrade their vehicles. NHS studies suggest up to 500 people die per year in Sheffield for conditions connected to air pollution. The feasibility study’s findings suggest that a Clean Air Zone (CAZ) within the inner ring road, similar to ones proposed in Leeds, Glasgow and Southampton after government intervention, will be needed to bring the city’s air quality in line with legal levels by

January 2021. The charge will mean a single daily charge for heavily polluting buses, coaches, taxis, HGVs and light goods vehicles (LGVs) to drive through the city. Buses, coaches, taxis, HGVs and LGVs cause disproportionately more pollution and often criss-cross the city with multiple trips. The government’s main route to achieve legal compliance is through Clean Air Zones which concentrate interventions to tackle the main sources of pollution vehicles,

those that are older than Euro 6 for diesel (2016) or Euro 4 for petrol (2006) Sheffield Council will have a legal duty to clean air to within the limits in the ‘shortest possible time’. The council will commence a large public consultation in early 2019 to get the views of residents, businesses, taxi drivers and bus companies on the

proposed changes. In a report released this week, to be considered by the cabinet on 21 November, Sheffield City Council will be seeking around £40m from government to support its activities in this area, including the installation of signs and cameras on the ring-road that will enable charges to be put in place.

A new-look Pepper Pot unveiled for Heart of the City II scheme The next stage in Sheffield's Heart of The City II scheme has taken another step forward, with a planning application being submitted to the local planning authority for approval. Block C, often referred to as the Pepper Pot, fronts on to Pinstone Street and plans include the retention of the attractive Victorian façade of the existing structure while redeveloping and expanding the building behind it. Proposals for this block were presented at public consultation events in September. It will feature five retail units on the ground floor and 37,000 sq ft of premium Grade A office space on the seven floors above. Councillor Mazher Iqbal, Cabinet Member for Business and Investment at Sheffield City Council, said: “During our public consultation in September, we received very valuable feedback which we have listened to and used to refine proposals for the Pepper Pot. While converting into a mix of retail uses and Grade A offices, we are also retaining the striking Pinstone Street façade so as to preserve as much of the city’s heritage as possible. It is an excellent blend of providing for the future while maintaining vistas of our past. This development continues the momentum which is seeing the heart of the city changing before our eyes with an innovative mix of retail, residential and office uses as well as stunning public realm improvements that will continue to make Sheffield attractive to businesses and investors.” Jon Munce, Development Director at Queensberry, commented: “We are delighted to be working with the Council on the delivery of Heart of the City II and the progress we are making. Bringing forward the first plans since Phase One is a great milestone for the scheme. The Pepper Pot building is a popular one in the city centre and we are confident we have delivered a sensitive yet modern design solution for the block.” Building on the success of the original Heart of the City scheme, Sheffield City Council approved the 1.5million square foot masterplan in March this year. The scheme will significantly regenerate the area of the city centre sitting between Barker’s Pool, the Peace Gardens and The Moor, creating a dynamic mixed-use district with premium retail and leisure brands, Grade A offices, contemporary residential space and attractive public realm.

Artist impression for the new-look pepper pot Artist impression for the new-look Pepper Pot Construction on Phase One of the scheme, which was designed by Leonard Design Architects and includes the flagship new HSBC office, is nearing completion and is expected to be ready for fit-out early next year. More than 250 people attended the two public dropin sessions as part of the consultation on Block C, which took place at The Art House and Sheffield Winter Garden in September. Visitors were able to view and discuss the proposals with members of the project team and provide feedback that contributed to the finalisation of the plans. Subject to planning, construction on the new block would commence in spring 2019, with completion expected by the end of 2020. Heart of the City II is one of Sheffield’s key economic projects. Backed by Sheffield City Council, with Queensberry as its key delivery partner, it is not just a retail scheme, but a mixed-use, vibrant quarter right at the heart of the city and synonymous with everything the city is trying to achieve. Heart of the City II builds on the hugely successful Heart of the City project that kickstarted the regeneration of Sheffield city centre at the start of the Millennium. The new mixed-use scheme will comprise of high-quality retail, Grade A offices, hotel and residential developments, restaurants and cafés, leisure destinations, parking and stunning public realm. Located at the very core of the city centre, it will bind together the old and the new, keeping the existing street patterns and quirky historic buildings but adding in striking new architecture and unique outdoor spaces. Rooted in the city’s unique character, Heart of the City II will provide a new home for Sheffield’s cultural, commercial and creative trailblazers. The developer, Queensberry, is a market leader in property development and investment. They deliver award-winning mixed-use developments to their partners and strong returns to co-investors. Queensberry puts design first and understands the importance of a creative design approach with complex urban environments. Their mission is to rekindle civic pride through the developments they build and refurbish while being sympathetic to the existing urban fabric.

ANGLER’S CORNER

with Clint Walker

I’m still rambling on about single hook pike rigs again this week, but in truth, I’ve been surprised by just how much interest there has been since I started my investigations. I’ve tried the single hook rig on a few different waters now, and most of the time, it’s been a success and on the one water it wasn’t, I think I’ve cracked the code there too. Onwards and upwards… This week, I visited a club water under the ownership of Stoke-on-Trent Angling Society. Astbury Mere contains some hefty specimens, with carp, bream and catfish to very substantial sizes, but the pike fishing, according to some, is relatively unexplored. I noted a trio of recent captures on social media, the best at 22lb, so resolved to try my one hook tactics on a more challenging water. I arrived bright and early and quickly headed off to peg 5, which I thought would give me access to fairly deep water as I’ve fished the adjacent swim before and found good depth. How wrong could you be? If you are a regular reader of my writings, you’ll know I’m backed by Deeper sonar, and regularly use one to get an idea of what I’m faced with, especially on new waters. Typically, I’d forgotten my Deeper, and after tackling up and casting, I quickly realised that it was a real error! In an area I’d presumed I’d be counting down my lead for a good number of seconds, I found that it plunged into weed before I could tighten up. Had I had my Deeper, I would have had a couple of casts to ascertain exactly what I was fishing over…and moved! As it was, I was, it was now raining heavily, and I really didn’t fancy shifting, so opted to make the best of it, and hope for a bit of luck. I wasn’t happy. I know that Astbury is renowned as a tricky venue with depths of over fifty feet, thick weed, and crystal clear waters, so it can present a real challenge, and I’d already put myself at a disadvantage by picking the wrong swim. Retrieving the first cast, I found the lead and bait thick with glutinous, cloying silkweed; the pike would never find my bottom bait amongst that slimy mess, so it would have to be popped up to be seen. Fortunately, the day before, I’d purchased a ‘deadbait kebab kit’ so had a quick look at the package insert to decide how to proceed. The images showed the plastic stick to be mounted on one of the three points of a single treble, so I slipped it over the point of my single circle hook, added the bait flag to stop

WRAGG FOOTBALL LEAGUE with A Royston

Its back to League Business after last weeks break for League Cup 1st Round matches. PREMIER DIVISION Sheffield Academicals were playing Crown & Cushion, the team that knocked them out of the Cup last week, but this time it was a different result with Academicals back up to full strength, they were 5-1 winners with goals from Doran 3 and Straw 2. Fossils FC were 6-1 winners away at strugging Elsecar Dynamos, Cohen grabbing a consolation goal. DIVISION 1 Scawthorpe Club moved to the top of the Division after their 4-1 away win at Joker Over 35s, they are two points in front of second placed Dinnington Town who have two games in hand, McVee scoring for Joker. Mosborough Trinity’s Ben Williams hit all five goals for them in the 5-1 win away at West End Terriers, Folletti for Terriers. Thorncliffe Fc drew 1-1 with Denaby United. DIVISION 2 Woodhuse West End picked up their first points of the season with a 3-2 victory over Oughtibridge War Memorial, Mitchell, Robertson and Tyler, Hill and Buckley for the losers. Hollingwood Old Boys moved to the top of the table after their 4-3 away win at Dronfield Town, Dronfield scorers were Benn 2 and Fox. Highgreen Vets were also away winners at AFC Dronfield by 4-1, with Wilson 2, Glossop and an

it slipping off, and put it back out. It settled, and I tackled up the other rod with a similar rig… On the first rod, a roach had been chopped up and added to the hook, on the other, a smelt. I’d used a baitdropper to put a small amount of chopped fish around the hook baits, utilising the oily sprat to try and produce an attractive slick, and then sat back to give the baits an hour before checking them. A silent hour passed, and when I bought the rods in, it was instantly apparent that the baits were still in the weed; how high did it go? The rigs were broken down, and a leger stem incorporated into both before I tried again. I swapped one of the kebab kits for a hair rigged roach and added a foam ball to pop it up over the weed. Hopefully, this time, both would be clear of the mess below and the pike would be able to see the target. The first run came soon after. A screech of the alarm, the drop off snatched up, and line flew off the spool; a monster from the deep? No, it was pest from the air. A seagull had spotted the baits in the clear water, picked one up and tried to stay aloft, before fortunately dropping the bait and wheeling away. It focussed the mind though, and the rig was changed again to try and combat not only the weed, but now, aerial attack as well! This time, a roach had braid stitched through it, and it was tied to a rig ring on the back of the hook. I’d added the ring by threading braid through the hook eye and whipping it in place, before covering with the treble sleeve to tidy up. Once the bait was in place, it was dropped out about fifteen yards at the beginning of the marginal shelf, and the line gently tightened to ensure I didn’t drag back into weed again! Time for a cup of tea. I watched the rod tips as I enjoyed a warming brew and was surprised to see the kebab rigged rod tip twitch gently a couple of times. At the alarm, nothing, but there was certainly something going on… I put down my mug and crouched by my rod. The drop off twitched up, then sank back… then again, an inch at a time, and the tip nodded again. Single bleeps emitted from the alarm in time with the nodding tip, and the indicator rose and fell in unison. I pinched the line, but could feel nothing, so lifted the rod and wound down to see if a pike had picked up the bait and lay still with it. Nothing. The bait ‘unplugged’ from the weed and a quick investigation revealed no teeth marks. The amount of floating weed on the line suggested that it was no more than suspended detritus which had caused the alert, but at least my bite indication was sensitive enough to pick it up! The kebab rig was rebaited and cast back out, Own Goal, Crandell with a consolation. East Herringthorpe and Hemsworth Miners shared the points with a 2-2 draw, 45s DIVISION 1 League Leaders Hallam 1860 were shcked to have been beaten by Phoenix FC by 2-1, Howe for Hallam. Elsecar Dynamos travelled to play Sheffield Aurora and came away with the points with a 3=2 win with veteran Galvin on the score sheet again with a double and one from Hirst, Hodge with a double score for Aurora. HSBS Bank had a excellent away win at Mosbrough Trinity by 5-0. Fossils Vets also won away at Ring O Bells by 4-0. 45s DIVISION 2 Civil Sports moved to joint top with Old Edwardians, after they had to thank Barringham and Abrahams for the goals against Denaby United. Dronfield Town won 2-0 at home to Penistone Church, Marklew and Jones Scoring. Norfolk Arms 2-1 winners away at Princess Royal Barnett with a double, and Frank for Royal South Kirkby beat Old Edwardians by 2-0,Twiby and Hayes. and I also checked the second rod, tweaking the line to ensure the alarm was on. I sat back down to try and finish my tea and watched as the drop off indicator on the close in rod hit the floor. I got up to wind the spool up and reset it, then returned to my drink. It did it again. The drop off hit the floor, so I tightened the line with my fingers. I could feel nothing, so was sure that a fish had swum through and caused the movement, I picked up the rod and wound in; solid! I couldn’t believe that I was weeded up again, so bounced the rod tip in dismay. Suddenly, a large pike erupted vertically from the water, no more than a couple of yards from the bank, and pleasingly, I could see my roach hanging out of its mouth… a drop back bite at point blank range! It wasn’t happy, and for the next couple of minutes fought hard to shed the single hook wedged firmly in its mouth. Eventually, I slipped it into the net, and from there my cradle, and was delighted to note that the debarbed circle hook had already fallen out as soon as the pressure was off; it doesn’t get much easier to unhook than that and I quickly moved my rod out of the way so I could support the fish for a photograph. My prize was in superb condition, and didn’t particularly want to be photographed, but eventually calmed enough for a couple of quick snaps. I weighed it carefully at 19lb 4oz, not the first ‘twenty’ of the season I’d hoped

for, but nevertheless, I was pleased to add another quality fish to the ‘single hook’ tally. My evidence now points to one hook being the way to go this season. Yes, I miss a few bites, but I’ve completely removed the worry about either deep hooking fish, or getting tangled up in flying trebles, and I’m hoping that based on my findings, I can encourage new (and established) pike anglers to give the single hook a go. I’ve met so many anglers who would like to fish for pike, but fear unhooking them when using trebles, so maybe if you are reading this, you might like to try a single, and begin to enjoy catching one of the most fearsome fish that swim in the UK!

There were just 13 games in the County Senior League this weekend as a few of the league’s teams were involved in County cup action; however 13 games got the goahead on Saturday afternoon. Premier Division North Gawber Colliery followed last weeks’ 5-0 win over Boynton Sports in the cup, with a 4-0 win this time out against South Kirkby Colliery. The win is enough to take North Gawber three points clear. Dodworth Miners Welfare’s poor run continued, as their winless run in all competitions stretched to its fourth game. They were held this past weekend 3-3 by mid-table Denaby United. Two goals from Luke Townsend scored twice to inspire Stocksbridge Park Steels Reserves to a 3-2 win over Jubilee Sports at the Look Local Stadium. Stocksbridge move into third place with the win. Defending champions Swinton Athletic were held to a 2-2 draw at home by Hepworth United. Swinton remain in fifth, with Hepworth climbing to 11th. There was a nine goal thriller at Oughtibridge War Memorial Ground, where Oughtibridge WMSC hosted Grimethorpe Sports. The game ended 5-4 in Grimethorpe’s favour. The win is Grimethorpe’s fourth in a row in all competitions.

Division One AFC Dronfield were 8-1 winners at home against Millmoor Juniors. The win takes AFC Dronfield into third place. Marcus Gordon scored three times Boynton Sports, but it was not enough as they drew 4-4 in a thrilling game with Sheffield Bankers at Killamarsh Juniors Football Ground. Second bottom Brinsworth Whitehill drew 3-3 for the second consecutive league match. This time they drew with Wombwell Main Reserves, whose first team knocked them out of the League Cup last weekend. Sheffield Medics unbeaten home record (four matches) continued, as they drew 1-1 with fourth placed Hemsworth Miners Welfare Reserves. Division Two With Wombwell Town not playing, Sheffield Union took their opportunity to move into first place, with a 3-1 win over fourth placed United Worksop. The Union lead the way by one point, but have played two games more than Wombwell. Thurcroft Miners Institute came into the weekend on back of back-to-back heavy defeats, but they bounced back this week with a 2-1 home win over Ardsley Athletico Juniors. Dodworth Miners Welfare moved into fifth place with a 6-0 away win over Worsbrough Bridge Athletic Development.

MILLERS boss Paul Warne believes his battling side were full value for their hard-earned point at Blackburn Rovers, this afternoon. Despite a backs-to-the-wall effort in the second half at Ewood Park, man-of-the-moment Michael Smith broke the deadlock with fifteen minutes to go with a fine header – to leave the Millers fans dreaming of a rare victory on the road. However, Bradley Dack broke Rotherham hearts when he levelled matters for Tony Mowbray’s side, just six minutes later – with Warne’s side withstanding late pressure from the hosts to claim a share of the spoils. Speaking to the assembled media afterwards, Warne was quick to express his pride at the manner of his side’s performance over the Pennines – with the Millers stretching their unbeaten run to five games ahead of the November international break. “I think it was a point gained,” Warne stressed. “Their play definitely deserved a goal but it’s a bit disappointing that we could not hang on for the three points, which would have been a good day for us. “Marek (Rodak) made a few saves and they missed a couple of good opportunities. They caused us a few problems so for us to get a point and go five unbeaten, is good for us. The lads gave me everything so I have no complaints.” Despite the disappointment of Rovers’ late equaliser, Warne believes that the hard-earned point could prove vital, by stressing that his side can take tremendous credit in shackling Rovers, who are proving a difficult proposition on their home patch. “I thought we started the game really well for the first 20/25 minutes. Blackburn is a difficult place to come and they have only lost one in 30 odd games here,” Warne added. “We knew how difficult it would be. They got back into the game and I thought in the first part of the second half, we just couldn’t get out.

minute spell. They definitely deserved a goal for their efforts.” Despite the Millers defending for large spells of the second half, Warne was quick to express his delight at Smith finding the net on the road once again, by remarking that the goal was just reward for his tiresome display, as Rotherham’s sole frontman. “My lads just don’t give up and they keep throwing their bodies in the way,” Warne added. “We like to get crosses into the box and our goal was the only time that Willo (Ryan Williams) went past (Amari’i) Bell in fairness. For Smudge, who works so hard for the team, to get another goal was hugely impressive and enjoyable and fully deserved for him. The only disappointment was that Smudge did not score that goal in the 85th minute!”

Manager Grant McCann was pleased with his side’s reaction to going behind as they drew 2-2 with National League North side Chorley in the Emirates FA Cup first round. Rovers went behind twice at Victory Park with Herbie Kane striking both times to get them back on level terms, and McCann says he was aware of how tough a test the Magpies would prove to be ahead of the match.

MCCANN HAILS IMPACT OF LIVERPOOL MAN KANE Grant McCann says midfielder Herbie Kane as been “different class” since joining Rovers on loan from Premier League side Liverpool. Kane’s double against Chorley saw him notch up his first goals in senior football, and McCann was quick to single out the midfielder for praise following a

Rotherham United coaching staff duo Stephen Gilpin and Ross Burbeary are eight days into their mammoth month-long 10k-a-day challenge, which has seen them raise over £1,500 for Prostate Cancer UK so far. The pair have been backed by Millers boss Paul Warne, his staff and players and a number of names and faces from around the sporting world, in addition to those who have pledged their backing on social media. Many supporters of the club have also donated to the cause on the JustGiving page at www. justgiving.com/fundraising/rotherhamunited. The challenge is set to run until the end of November but we caught up with a tired Stephen Gilpin on Thursday afternoon. Here’s his update on the journey so far: “So far, so good. We’ve found it challenging in places and we’ve had to do a couple of runs away from each other which has been difficult but considering where we’re at, we’re really happy. “The support from everybody is really motivating us to keep going. The football club has been absolutely brilliant, the manager, the coaching staff and the players have all been right behind us. The manager and the coaches particularly have done plenty of the running with us behind closed doors and have helped to motivate us. Coming into work everyday they’ve really pushed us on. “Away from Rotherham United, the wider community andthe town have been overwhelming in

their support of us. The way they’ve backed us with sponsorship and helped to spread the word on social media is brilliant. “Myself and Ross have both had people contact us who we haven’t spoken to in years. “We’re almost a third of the way through now and we just want to keep pushing on. It’s becoming very physically tough for us, our legs are sore and we’re getting a lot of aches and pains but we’re being driven on by the support we’ve had. “We apologise if it’s becoming a bit in your faces but it’s such a worthy cause and something I’m really keen to raise money for because of how my grandpa battled with it. “We set a target of doing each run in under 45 minutes and we’re determined to stick to that because unfortunately, someone passes away roughly every 45 minutes from Prostate Cancer. “We don’t just want to support the charity from a financial point of view, but also the awareness that our challenge will bring. If it prompts people to go and get themselves checked out then that’s great too. “Tony Bellew got on board with supporting us and he invited us down to his training camp with Dave Coldwell. We met Tony and had a really good chat with him. We watched him train and we swapped some ideas on training and it’s created a link with the gym there. He wanted to hear all about our story and he wanted to share it on his own social media. Considering he has a massive world title fight coming up, for him to take time out of his busy schedule was amazing for us. “We’ve had Charlie Edwards, who similarly has a world title fight coming up, show his support. He ran the leg at ParkRun with us and we’d like to thank him massively for that. “There has been a lot of support on social media from people such as Paul Chuckle, various football players and we’re looking to get a few more people on board to come and run with us in the near future.”

KANE’S HARD WORK PAYS OFF Midfielder Herbie Kane has been working on his finishing in training after scoring his first goals for the club in Sunday’s 2-2 draw with Chorley in the first round of the Emirates FA Cup. Kane bagged his first senior brace as Rovers had to come from behind on two occasions at Victory Park, but the on-loan Liverpool man says as long as he is helping out the team, that is all that matters. “I have been working on my finishing a lot after training, working on the way I strike the ball and thankfully I managed to get two in this game,” he said. “It didn’t matter how I scored, all that was important was to get on the score sheet and as long as it helps the team out, that is all that matters.

“When I was younger I was a goalscorer, I was always trying to score and assist when I was first starting out and it was good to get back amongst the goals.” Strikes from Josh O’Keefe and Courtney MeppenWalter saw the Magpies lead twice in the game, but Kane says Rovers shown great resilience to get themselves back into the affair. “Chorley made it difficult for us, we had to dig in to try and unlock their defence and we managed to do it twice, possibly on another day we would have scored more than that,” he added. “We are disappointed that we didn’t come away with the win, but we showed good resilience to get something out of the game and it shows the strong mentality that we have in the dressing room. “The replay will obviously be a difficult one as they will play similar to the way they have here, but we are confident and we want to get ourselves into the next round of the competition.”

brilliant performance in midfield from the 19-yearold. “I was really pleased for Herbie to score especially his second goal, the finish was world class, he’s been outstanding ever since he joined this football club and he pulled us out of a real hole today,” he added. “Herbie is a different class, we had a chat with him earlier in the week about getting him into dangerous areas because at Charlton he was picking the ball up too deep, he has that quality around the box, and both his goals showed that. “Chorley are a side that are flying high near the top of the National League North, they have a lot of confidence, the pitch was a real leveller, so we had to make sure that we gave it everything and we will be ready to go again in the replay in just over a week’s time.”

GAFFER REMAINS POSITIVE Chris Wilder remained typically upbeat in the aftermath of Friday’s Sheffield derby stalemate against Sheffield Wednesday.

The Blades boss commented: “They’ve all got to be able to handle the ball, not one of them gets it and smacks it forward, that’s hope football, ours

in constructed, we break the shape up. “We try and play and we’ll continue to try and play. I could easily set a team up to go back to front, this is our way and

when we play to our way we are a very, very good side. “Things just wouldn’t drop, credit to them for continually putting their bodies on the line and the goalkeeper has made saves when needed, but nothing really

dropped for us.” Wilder added: “Even at the death with Billy’s header, it’s a yard or so behind, if that’s in front of him, he probably heads a last minute winner in front of the Kop. “But I enjoyed the night and the remembrance

tributes were observed impeccably. “You sometimes get caught up in the football, but that was special and the way it was received and acknowledged by both sets of supporters was outstanding.”

DUFFY DISAPPOINTED WITH DRAW

being held to a goalless draw at Bramall Lane, the experienced playmaker admitted it was a frustrating evening. He remarked: “We reflect on that with disappointment to be honest. They came here to do a job and if we’d got the first goal they’d have had to come out and attack us, which would have left gaps. “It was one of those nights, we couldn’t get that elusive first goal and their goalkeeper ended up getting man of the match. “It’s difficult regardless of the division or opposition, if they sit in and aim to frustrate. They fill gaps, they’ve got

ten-men behind the ball all the time, but it was down to us to try and open them up.” Duffy added: “We did that for the penalty and if that goes in it totally changes the game. They would have had to attack and it could have been anything really. “The more of the ball you have, the less opportunity the opposition have to score. We had a lot of the ball in the final third, it was just about picking the right pass and maybe getting the ball into the box earlier to mix things up. “But to a man we’re still learning and this team will only get better and better.”

prepare, we need to rest the legs and minds. The games will come thick and fast following the break, there will be two game weeks coming up.” The 33-year-old added: “I’ve played with Ollie (Norwood) before and he loves to get on the ball and dictate play. He’s capable of spraying those balls 60 or 70 yards, he’s done fantastically well since arriving and has fitted in perfectly. “Most of our team has come up through League One and Two, so it’s great to be playing where we are now, that gives us that hunger to drive on when you are facing the best teams in this division.”

Mark Duffy thought the Blades did more than enough to warrant taking all three points from Friday’s Sheffield derby. Speaking after

Mark Duffy believes the promotion experience of he and his team-mates gives enough knowhow to escape the Championship. Mark Duffy says the Blades must utilise the forthcoming break ahead of a busy preChristmas schedule, whilst also praising the affect a team-mate has had on the squad as a whole. Speaking after Friday’s Sheffield derby stalemate, the influential midfielder remarked: “The international break will give us a chance to look at the games we’ve played and the ones ahead. “We’ve just got to

A TEAM PERFORMANCE Jos Luhukay hailed what he tagged a team performance following the Steel City stalemate at Bramall Lane on Friday night. Cameron Dawson’s stunning first half penalty save kept the derby goalless as the Owls halted a bleak run of results in S2. And whilst applauding the efforts of Dawson between the sticks, the Wednesday boss looked all around the team following the Owls’ first clean sheet of the season.

He said: “For me, this game has showed how much spirit, how much togetherness and how much character we have in the squad. “Everybody knows the importance of the derby games and we needed to show the fans how much we all care. “We cannot look to the past for the recent results, we must look forward and we approached the game with that mentality. “So we produced a very good team performance in one

of the most important games of the season. “This is a positive, of course, but we need more, we need to see this on a regular basis, starting with the two home games we have after the international break.” Luhukay added: “I am pleased for everyone, the fans and everyone at the club. For Cammy in particular for stopping the penalty, it was a perfect moment. “I said in the press conference before the game that he is a very, very talented young

goalkeeper and I do not understand any criticism he has had. “Cammy has been consistent all season and tonight, he deserved the

man of the match performance and the penalty save that helped our team to a good point. “I look all around the team tonight, from

the young boys to the experienced players and to a man they did themselves and Sheffield Wednesday proud.”

NOTHING GETS GIVEN TO YOU IN THIS GAME Cameron Dawson gave praise to his team mates following Friday’s goalless draw at Bramall Lane. Though it was the Wednesday academy product who left the derby with the headlines, after several key contributions including a first half penalty save. The determined and disciplined defensive display saw the Owls post their first clean sheet of the campaign and Dawson believes it was well deserved, as he explained; “Football is tough and nothing gets given to you in this game. “There have been lots of questions asked but we know what we’re about. “I thought the back five were immense, heading, tackling and clearing and that’s something we have needed to go back to basics with maybe. “But we did that and got what we deserved.”

And Dawson is hopeful that the clean sheet boost and halt to the losing run can serve as a springboard for better results and improvements after the break. The 23-year-old has remained mentally strong throughout the season and shown maturity coping with the demands of regular first team football. Buoyed by his first shutout this season, he continued: “When you’re shipping goals like we have been, it’s time to go back to basics and earn the right to play. “I thought we deserved our point and we’ll take it and move on. “It’s tough and it’s not nice when people question you but like I said, nothing gets handed to you in this game. “We’ll go back to the drawing board, keep trying to improve and hopefully get those wins after the international break to drive up that table.”
