BUSINESSES JOIN CAMPAIGN TO HELP THE HOMELESS This year’s Christmas ‘Help Us Help’ campaign to tackle begging and help the homeless launches this week with more local support than ever. More than 20 local businesses and organisations, including John Lewis, Virgin Money and McDonalds, have joined the campaign to help vulnerable people on the street which will see a Help us Help Christmas cabin in the Peace Gardens, dressed by Sheffield’s John Lewis store.
The businesses are joining local charities and Sheffield City Council to call for people to donate items such as canned food, sugar, tea, coffee, gloves, hats, scarves, socks, toiletries, biscuits, chocolate bars, coffee, sugar and pot noodles to charities that help rough sleepers and people who beg. People can drop off donations at the cabin or other city centre locations. The cabin is open now to Wednesday 28 December in front of the Town Hall. It will be run by
the people who work tirelessly 365 days a year to help those on the street, and they will be on hand to answer questions and give advice. Help Us Help is a collaboration between different services which support people who are sleeping rough or begging. Its aim is to help the public make informed choices and promote the best ways to help. These are: • Give time or donations to charity, rather than directly to someone who begs
• Give food or drink rather than money • Have a chat with someone and encourage them to access support services • Buy a Big Issue North as vendors are working, not begging, and need public support • Find out more about Help us help and get involved at www. helpushelp.uk
Bobbie Walker, Coordinator of The Soup Kitchen, said: “I am proud to be part of the team that provides hot
drinks, food and clothing each evening in the city centre to those in need. We signpost vulnerable people to information about the agencies in our city that can help them. Help Us Help has brought all of the services together around a table to discuss each vulnerable person’s needs and to offer positive support to help them move on to a better life. It’s one of the best things that has happened to this city.” There will also be collection boxes at the Christmas Help Us Help cabin and the Town Hall reception. Money collected will be split between the Help Us Help charities on 3 December.

DONCASTER RESIDENTS URGED TO BUY LOCAL THIS CHRISTMAS Local people are being encouraged to support Doncaster businesses as several campaigns launch to showcase what they have to offer in the lead up to the festive season and all year round. Doncaster Council is backing a national campaign called ‘Small Business Saturday,’ which highlights the vital role small businesses play in the economy on Saturday 1 December. The council is also launching a number of its own initiatives to promote Doncaster firms and encourage people to buy local.
An exciting Countdown to Christmas campaign called ‘Living Advent’ also starts on Saturday 1 December. It sees individual Doncaster town centre business offer a special promotion, provide entertainment or put on a demonstration or activity every day through to 24 December. Full details are released each day by Visit Doncaster as an incentive to get people to come and shop in the town centre during December. It forms part of the ongoing #YourDN1 campaign. A Doncaster-themed
‘12 Days of Christmas’ initiative will showcase the breadth and depth of products and services residents can find from businesses right across the borough. This will encourage people to buy what they need for Christmas closer to home rather than go online or venture to other areas. Councillor Bill Mordue, Cabinet Member for Business, Skills and Economic Development, said: “Small businesses boost our economy, employ local people and provide a valuable service. Small Business Saturday is a great way to
remind us to support Doncaster’s very own business community by shopping local. “We have launched a number of campaigns to promote our local businesses. Our Living Advent will encourage people into our town centre and our 12 Days of Christmas initiative showcases what local people can buy and do right across our borough. “We are proud of our business community and work hard to support it. We urge all Doncaster residents and businesses to get behind the campaigns and buy local. Everything you would want
this Christmas can be found right here in Doncaster. “And don’t forget, Doncaster businesses are for all seasons and not just for Christmas.” Businesses are
encouraged to go: smallbusinesssaturdayuk.com to register their interest and to: www.businessdoncaster.com to find out about local business support. Business Doncaster is
also staging its 10th Doncaster Business Showcase on Thursday 28 February 2019 at Doncaster Racecourse. This popular event brings together businesses and individu-
als from across the borough to promote their business, gain inspiration, learn the latest business skills and benefit from excellent networking opportunities.

READER COMPETITION
Who is in with a chance of becoming the oldest ever Britain’s Strongest Man?
ALBERT SNODGRASS Someone broke into my house and stole a limbo stick. How low can you go? I went to the zoo yesterday and saw a baguette in a cage. The zoo keeper told me it was bread in captivity. What kind of exercise do lazy people do? Diddly squats. The human cannonball tells the circus owner he is going to retire. “But you can’t!” protests the boss. “Where am I going to find another man of your caliber?” I woke up last night to find the ghost of Gloria Gaynor standing at the foot of my bed. At first I was afraid.......then I was petrified. I tried to get into a very trendy nightclub last Saturday. The doorman said to me, “Sorry mate, you’ve had too many.” I said, “What, drinks?” He said, “No, birthdays!”. I think my wife is a weather forecaster... A guy called up our house asking if the coast is clear. Before I die I am going to eat a whole bag of unpopped popcorn. That should make the cremation a little more interesting. I started a business building Yachts in my attic. Sails are through the roof! My deaf wife just told me that “we need to talk”. That’s not a good sign.

SHEFFIELD BID LIGHTS UP THE CITY CENTRE THIS CHRISTMAS Sheffield Business Improvement District (BID) has unveiled two huge festive light installations which are set to light up the city centre until Christmas. A five-metre Santa Claus, who has appeared on Barker’s Pool, and a three-metre Brearley Bear, who is calling The Moor home, are a first for the city centre and it is hoped they will attract thousands of visitors during the festive season. The light installations form part of the Sheffield Christmas Trail, a brand new attraction for 2018 and will see families follow a magical trail through the city centre in search of the items on Brearley Bear’s lost Christmas list. Families who want to take part in Sheffield Christmas Trail can download the Sheffield Christmas Trail app or pick up a Little Book of Clues from the Winter Garden, Unit 1 Surrey

Street or Virgin Money Lounge, as well as participating venues. The trail is free to take part in and every child who completes the trail will receive a special Christmas gift. Every family which completes the trail and finds all the items on Brearley’s lost Christmas list will be entered into a draw to win a trip to Lapland during Christmas 2019. In the run-up to the trail launch on 24 November, Sheffield BID helped to light up the skies above the city centre by funding the spectacular laser show which amazed crowds during the Christmas Lights Switch On. The surprise 15-minute light show delighted thousands of families who welcomed Christmas to the city centre on 18 November. Diane Jarvis, Sheffield BID Manager, said: “This Christmas Sheffield BID is committed to creating magical experiences for families to enjoy. Our illuminated Santa Claus and Brearley Bear will light up the city centre, creating festive photo opportunities and memories that will last for life, not just for Christmas. “The festive season is a crucial time for retailers in the city centre. At a time when the high
street is facing challenges, Sheffield BID hopes the illuminations, along with our free festive attractions Santa’s Post Office and the Sheffield Christmas Trail, will provide a much needed boost to footfall. Sheffield BID is pleased to have supported the arrival of Christmas in Sheffield at the Christmas Lights Switch On. The laser show was a spectacular start to the festive season and marks the beginning of what we hope will be a magical Christmas for families and a lucrative Christmas for businesses.” Amanda Phillips, centre manager of The Moor, said: “It is fantastic to have Brearley Bear lighting up The Moor this Christmas. We look forward
to welcoming visitors enjoying the Sheffield Christmas Trail.” Santa Claus and Brearley Bear will be lit up as part of the Sheffield Christmas Trail from 24 November – 24 December. Families can find out more about the trail by visiting www. sheffieldchristmastrail.com or by following @ BrearleyBear on Twitter. Santa’s Post Office will open from 10am – 4pm on Saturdays and Sundays, and 4pm – 7pm on Thursdays until 16 December. From 17 – 24 December Santa’s Post Office will be open from 10am – 4pm daily (7pm Thursday).

1294 28/11/2018 NO MORE FREE TV LICENCES FOR OVER-75’S? The BBC is launching a consultation period to decide how licence fees for over-75s should be paid for. They are currently financed by a government-funded scheme, which is due to end in 2020.It is expected the cost of free licences to the over-75s will total £745m - a fifth of the BBC’s current budget by 2021/22. The consultation period is running for 12 weeks from 20 November until 12 February. In a speech to the BBC, Director General Tony Hall said there were “important issues to get right”.Lord Hall added: “While the costs of the schemes are rising, so is the need for our programmes and content. We are looking at options for reform, what’s fair, what’s feasible,” he said. It was also outlined that the cost of taking on the scheme would be the equivalent of what is spent today on all of BBC Two, BBC Three, BBC Four, the BBC News Channel, CBBC and CBeebies. Future option suggestions Four options were set out in a report, commissioned by the BBC, produced by Frontier Economics. They consisted of: 1. Scrap free licence fees for over-75s The report estimates that residual costs to shut down the concession would cost
£72m - or 10% of the cost of continuing with it. When the government introduced the free licence fee for over-75s in 2000, it was argued the benefits would (largely) go to poorer households. However, that argument has weakened with the improvement in living standards for the over-75s. 2. Replace with a 50% concession for all over-75 households A 50% concession is in line with what’s currently being offered to those with visual impairments. 3. Increase the age threshold for eligibility Raise age threshold to 77. This aligns with increased longevity and reforms to state pension age but retains an arbitrary threshold. The report estimates that it would cost £645m which is 87% of the cost of reinstating the current concession in 2021/22. They note the vast majority of households containing someone older than 75 also contain someone over the age of 77 so relatively few households would lose out. Raise age threshold to 80 This would align with other pensioner benefits that begin at 80 such as the over80s increase in winter fuel payments.
The estimated cost is £481m - that’s 65% of the cost of reinstating the current situation. People over the age of 80 are more likely to live alone so this could help to target the concession at those who are most reliant on The BBC is launching a consultation period to decide how licence fees for over-75s should be paid for. They are currently financed by a governmentfunded scheme, which is due to end in 2020. It is expected the cost of free licences to the over-75s will total £745m - a fifth of the BBC’s current budget by 2021/22. 4. Means-test eligibility for the concession Link free TV licences to over-75s who get pension credit. Pension credit is a government-defined measure of need - so this would improve targeting of those at need of a free TV licence. It’s estimated this would cost £209m or 28% of the cost of keeping the current concession. Link free TV licences to anyone receiving pension credit regardless of age. Improves targeting and would align with other benefits. The estimated cost to the BBC is £327m - 44% as much as that of reinstating the current concession.

Research even suggests that after the age of 50, people begin to get progressively happier. However, this isn’t the case for everyone, for some people alcohol can start to have negative impacts as they get older. In the past ten years we have seen a significant increase in harms caused by alcohol to older people. So, what do we do? Drink Wise, Age Well provides information on alcohol and getting older to allow you to make informed choices about your alcohol use. We provide information on alcohol unit guidelines, tips for cutting down and where and how to get help if you need it. We also support health and social care providers and community organisations to recognise and respond to risky drinking in people aged over 50. We offer training and skills development. Our free training courses are designed to help people who work in our communities to better identify and respond to problem drinking in the over 50s. We offer support to individuals, groups and families. Our direct engagement and support team offer one-to-one support, home visits, Mutual Aid Partnership meetings and family support. Christmas is around the corner and who doesn’t love a Christmas party and a mince pie, or two, or three? But this is a time when many people find themselves drinking more than they usually do. Drinkaware has put together the 12 top tips of Christmas to see people safely and healthily through the Festive season and into 2019. If you drink alcohol this Christmas: • Keep in mind the Chief Medical Officers’ low risk drinking guidelines and try not to drink more than 14 units, which is six standard glasses of 13% wine or six pints of 4% beer, in any week • If you choose to drink, then spread the drinking over three or more days and avoid binge drinking. • Try allocating several days every week when you don’t drink – the drink free days. This will help to reduce the overall amount of alcohol that you drink and let family and friends know that you are not always drinking and that it’s perfectly normal not to do so. If you have children, it will also show them that Christmas doesn’t have to include alcohol. • Don’t drink on an empty stomach. A healthy meal before you go out or start drinking, and snacks between drinks can help to slow down the absorption of alcohol, helping you stay in control • Avoid what some people call ‘preloading’– it’s very easy for the drinks to stack up that way • Pace yourself by alternating any alcoholic drinks with water or soft drinks and avoid drinking in rounds, which may make you drink more and faster than you intended • Try downsizing your alcoholic drinks– it will help you to drink less. • Try having a no or low alcohol alternative – they are just as tasty • If you’re heading out to a Christmas party, make your plans in advance on how

If you then go out in the cold after drinking, you can lose heat very easily and quickly. And that can be dangerous • Remember that drinking and driving kills. WINTER WEDDING TIPS When choosing your wedding shoes, opt for something enclosed; peep toes won’t cut it in the snow! Alternatively, if you’re not brave enough to sport heels in frosty conditions, there are some beautiful wedding boots on the market which are both practical and elegant. Draping yourself in diamonds will ensure you sparkle and shine on your big day. Think delicate tiaras and cascading earrings. And don’t forget your bridesmaids. Fur muffs are a fantastic accessory. Not only will they keep your bridesmaids’ hands warm, they will also work really well with the winter wonderland theme. Whatever you choose, a winter wedding is a fantastic opportunity to experiment with luxurious fabrics such as white velvet and faux fur. Sparkling jewels, silvers and gold really complement this theme too. When organising a winter wedding remember to pick your venue carefully; try not to choose a room with too many windows, as a drafty room will make for unhappy guests! Check that the venue will have adequate heating, as no-one can predict winter temperatures. An ideal winter wedding venue will feature roaring open fires and seasonal decorations. Celebrate the festive period with floral arrangements made up of reds and greens, or in-season flowers such as tulips or roses. Pillar candles, and twinkling lights are also lovely, and silver, gold, and white are perfect colour schemes to complement your winter wedding ideas.

THE MASONS ARMS WAS RECENTLY REOPENED AFTER NEVER BEFORE SEEN SHOTS OF A CHESTERFIELD hemlines got shorter MANY MONTHS CLOSED AND YEARS OF NEGLECT with the advent of the MUSIC ICON FEATURE IN NEW BOOK Once a thriving self leading to closure The Masons Arms: With the sympathetic mini skirt and boys' hair community pub successive landlords had plunged the iconic Masons into disrepair. Stories of aggressive drinkers and flooded bathrooms, fights, and general apathy drove people away till The Masons became a shadow of its former
earlier in 2018. Around the corner in Tasker Road, Joe Cocker, the youngest son of a civil servant, was born and raised. He left school early, became an apprentice gas fitter and in 1961 he started his musical career in the pubs of Sheffield including
one of his local haunts. Some of the locals still talk about the days when Joe would come into The Masons for a drink and stand up in the middle of the tap room and start to sing. His voice somehow still emanates around the old walls and rooms making the place feel like part of music history.
renovations, more to come in the upcoming months, we have built a dedicated stage so that we can have further musical performances, not just in the honour of Joe Cocker, but for the Masons itself. And “with a little help from your friends” The Masons in Crookes will return to some of its former stature.

It’s a name that dominated vinyl sales for decades and supplied thousands of instruments to the town’s aspiring pop stars. Now a new book is set to feature never before seen photos of some of the early days of Hudsons – the music shop that ceased trading in 2012 after 105 years in business. Author Pete Dodd has spent months researching the new ‘Dirty Stop Out’s Guide to 1960s Chesterfield’ and says being handed the photos – which arrived just hours before the book went to print – was like
hitting the jackpot. “I thought the search for period pics of Hudsons had been exhausted,” says Pete. “So when Keith Hudson – who ran the family business – dropped by just days before the book was printed with a bunch of previously unseen gems, I couldn't believe my eyes. I'm glad I gave him a call! “These never-beforeseen photos are a magnificent blast from the past and bring memories flooding back.” The era defined by flower power and the Beatles is immortalised in the new ‘Dirty Stop

Out’s Guide to 1960s Chesterfield’ written by Pete – former Derbyshire Times journalist and founder member of the Thompson Twins. It was a time when Chesterfield hosted gigs by artists that went on to conquer the world. Everyone from Jimi Hendrix to Pink Floyd played landmark shows in the town. Pete: “Never before, or since, has a generation swept away all that came before on a wave of eager exuberance as girls'

MERCURY M T RS 'ROGUE' PRIVATE PARKING FIRMS TARGETED AS MPS BACK FAIRER PARKING CAMPAIGN
The RAC has welcomed the support of the House of Commons for a fairer private parking system, which would make it easier to appeal unfair fines. The Parking (Code of Practice) Bill would see the creation of a single, independent appeals service for drivers who have been hit by hefty private parking charges. The bill would also introduce a new code of practice for private car parks, including a £100 limit for fines and a 10-minute grace period for drivers overstaying the limits on their ticket.

According to a recent study the DVLA is set to make £16 million this year alone from private parking firms requesting driver details, with each request costing £2.50. RAC head of roads policy Nicholas Lyes says the Local government minister, Rishi Sunak MP, was organisation is “delighted” that the bill is progressing also pleased that MPs had unanimously backed the through Parliament, and that its members would soon proposals to create a better private parking system for benefit from a fairer parking system. the UK’s motorists. PLANS SUBMITTED FOR HEART OF THE CITY II’S BLOCK B Plans for Block B of Heart of the City II, featuring a sensitive redevelopment of Laycock House, have been submitted to the Local Planning Authority for approval. The announcement creates further momentum for this landmark regeneration project following the validation of a recent planning application for Block C, known locally as the ‘Pepper Pot’ building. Fronting onto Pinstone Street, Block B will occupy a prominent city centre location, situated between

Pinstone Street, Cross Burgess Street and Charles Street, behind the John Lewis store. The plans for Block B include Laycock House, a late Victorian building which has survived the 20th and 21st centuries more or less completely in its original form. Should approval be granted, the plans for Block B include the sensitive renovation of the residences and smaller retail units within Laycock House. The current existing courtyard behind the building will be opened up and reimagined as a welcoming city garden, with a café proposed for the ground floor unit complete with tables spilling out into the courtyard, giving a modern city-living space. There will also be four new retail units at ground floor level and 52 apartments across the seven floors above, delivering a high-quality residential offer in a superb location. Councillor Mazher Iqbal, Cabinet Member for Business and Investment at Sheffield City Council, said: “Submitting another planning application is a sign that the Heart of the City II project is taking big leaps forward. We are grateful to members of the public and stakeholders for their feedback over the last few months as we have worked towards submission. We are confident that these plans represent the best balance possible in terms of giving a new use to the much-loved Laycock House whilst also providing added economic opportunity and vibrancy to 21st century Sheffield, and reflect the very best of our city.” Jon Munce, Development Director at Queensberry, added:

ANGLER’S CORNER
with Clint Walker
I’ve done something different this week and it’s been a lot of fun, but definitely outside of my fishing ‘comfort bubble’. Some weeks ago, I was invited to board a boat operating out of the Mersey to try my hand at uptiding, a method I’ve never used before. Every other time I’ve been out boat fishing, I’ve bounced my baits down tide, or suspended them over the gunnel and simply waited for something to pick up the baits; a little more thought and endeavour is required when uptiding. If you’re a seasoned sea angler, you’ll already know exactly what the method entails, but I didn’t, so was delighted to get a quick demonstration by Bad Boyz IV skipper Aaron Smith before casting out. I wasn’t really prepared for such tactics, having purchased just a standard boat rod just before the trip rather than a dedicated uptide rod, but needs must, and I soon remembered how to cast with a multiplier reel, eight ounces of lead, and some seriously sharp hooks baited with some seriously unpleasant baits! The biggest difficulty was avoiding everyone else on board! We’d taken only a few minutes to reach our first mark, and once anchored, each angler cast in turn to ensure we all had plenty of room of room to fish without tangling. At the stern, four anglers bounced baits off down tide, the rest of us lobbed out our leads, instantly released yards of line, and waited for the leads to bite on the sea bed. Once the long wires that each lead was adorned with had engaged in the sand, the line was left in a bow to help the racing tide keep the baits in place, the rods were placed in holders, and we all stood back to wait. Our pennel rigs had been loaded with a sticky, slimy mess of black lugworm and tipped with squid, our target codling or rays, so the excitement amongst a boat full of relatively inexperienced anglers was rising by the second! It didn’t take long for the first definitive bites to disturb the melodic nodding of the rod tips either, and within a few minutes, the first codling

PREMIER DIVISION HSBC Bank continue to win matches and look to try and lift the League Trophy, they have only lost one game and that was to last season’s Champions Wickersley Old Village. The latest win against Elsecar Dynamoes was by 5-0, with Morris on the score sheet again with another Hat Trick following the same last week. The rest of the scorers were Cranin and Hattersley. Wickersley Old Village travelled to play Royston Oakwood and came back with all the points with a 6-0 win with goals from Gray 2, Batchelor, Lund, Greaves Bacon. Plough Rangers and Handsworth Parramre shared the points with a 1-1 draw, Jones for Plough and Grady for Handsworth. DIVISION 1 Dinnington Town beat Penistone Church by 3-1 and in doing so moved to the top of the Table, Holmes, Woodrup and Hendy scoring their goals, Cooper grabbing a consolation. West End Terriers had a super victory over Scawthorpe Club, Batley 3, Cooper and Taylor, scoring in a 4-1 win. Joker Over 35s grabbed their second win on the trot after they beat Denaby United by 5-0, McVee grabbing a Hat Trick, Roberts and Croft with the others. DIVISION 2 AFC Dronfield and Woodhouse West End who are the bottom two clubs looking for vital points to move them up the Table with both clubs
was boated! This was followed by innumerable dogfish (occupational hazard) and a few whiting, but sadly, I didn’t see any more codling… After an hour or so, Aaron retrieved the anchor, and we motored to a new spot in deeper water before laying up in the tide once more. The hooks were rebaited with worm and squid and were despatched to take up position before we all stepped back to wait. A brew all round was warmly received as the bitter wind started to bite, but before anyone had time to finish it, the bites started again; more dogfish, better whiting including some ‘keepers’ and a solitary pouting, but still no rays… The boys at the stern were enjoying good sport as baits bobbled over the bottom, and a change to a three hook scratching rig really increased the number of bites for those lads, but I stuck to bigger baits in the hope of bigger fish! Although it was cold out on the water, I’d ensured I was sensibly wrapped up, and wasn’t feeling it; it did help that rod tip action was constant and once I’d got used to deciphering exactly what was going on, and got my head around was seemed to be extreme slack line fishing, it worked, and soon I could even spot the tell tale rattle of crabs attacking the bait. I wound down to a tentative pluck of the bait and was delighted to reel in a huge edible crab, but I was more than a little disappointed when it let go of the bait at the side of the boat… I really fancied it for tea! Bad Boyz IV moved again, this time to a spot that our skipper reckoned bought more chance of a thornback ray. With all baits dispatched, Aaron rustled up some sausages to feed everyone aboard, and whilst he was doing that, I noted a single nod of the rod tip which wasn’t like any preceding bites. Just a few seconds later, and the rod pulled down positively, so I took up the slack and set the hooks into something different! It was a ray. Mine was the first of the day, a prime example of a male thornback weighing perhaps six pounds, but one which used its body shape and the tide to provoke a battle which really put a strain on the tackle. Safely boated, it joined me for a picture before Aaron pointed out the fearsome array of thorny spines from which it gets its name, the whiplike tail, and all other features which make the thornback such a sought after capture. It was returned alive, and I loaded the hooks again. The next angler to hit a thornback was Mark who was fishing to my right, but his fish was even better, a specimen weighed at well over eight pounds, and again safely photographed and returned. The sport on this mark proved to be the best of the day, and for the next few hours, between welcome cups of tea, it was fast and frantic with almost everyone boating thornbacks! Everyone on the boat was catching, but some good fish managed to slip the hook too. Just before sunset, I hit another shy bite, and after recovering the slack, felt the kick of a whiting at the other end. As I cranked it from the depths, the rod tip lunged over, and my spool started to release line quickly as the rod tip got ever closer to the sea! I tried to stop the fish gaining line, pumping it towards the surface,
desperate for a win, and it was AFC Dronfield who got the win by 4-1, Chasemore, Spence, Crandell and Handiside scoring their goals. Hemsworth Miners had their third win on the trot to lift them up the table and after last weeks 9-3 win they were banging in the goals again against East Herringthorpe by 5-2 Barrick, Maher, Dawson , Baddley plus an own goal - Wilson and Stringer for the visitors. Doncaster Over 35s travelled to play Dronfield Town and the jurney proved profitable as they took all the points with a 5-0, Lindley 3,S kelding and Stevenson. Clowne Wanderers beat Oughtibridge War Memorial by 3-1, Olfield scoring for Oughtibridge. Jubilee Sports lost 2-0 at home to Hollingwood Old Boys. 45s DIVISION 1 Ring O Bells were 4-1 winners against bottom club Sheffield Aurora Fawcett, Hardy, Chambers and Jeeves, Hodge with a consolation for Aurora. HSBC Bank and Elsecar Dynames both high up the league battled it out for vital ponts but it was HSBC Bank who got the win by 2-1 with Haslam and Brookes scoring, Fossils Vets beat Wickersley Old Village by 2-1 with Wilson and Prasher scoring, Dudhill for the Village. 45sDIVISION 2 Princess Royal lost at home to Denaby United by 4-2, scoring for the losers was Bingham with 2.

but unfortunately, after less than a minute, I lost it, retrieving instead a badly mauled whiting. The skipper told me he thought a bigger ray had attacked the bait, but the presence of a seal, spotted around the boat earlier couldn’t be discounted! I’m glad I lost it! We fished on into dark, the Liverpool skyline shining brightly behind us, but the action fell away drastically, and I think it reasonable to blame the presence of the aforementioned seal which popped up for a look at us at regular intervals from just a few
yards away… a treat, but I think we would all have preferred it to stay away! When it became too dark to see the rod tips, the time came to return to the sealock, and from there the marina before happily disembarking. Bad Boyz IV is a modern boat with superb loan kit, great facilities, and an outstanding skipper, so comes highly recommended; in fact, so much did our group of friends enjoy the trip, we’re booking it again for a winter cod outing… maybe you should try it too?
TALENT GAMES 2018
third Gold, with Hannah Gowan (Girls E) also achieving Gold overall. Bronze was awarded to Archie Biggin (Boys D) and top 6 places went to Sophie Hancox and Jessica Ireland (Girls D) and Theo Wellington (Boys D). Great performances from Chloe Strutt and Lucy Maltby also made an important contribution to the squad result. It was another hugely successful event for Sheffield Diving. The girls squad was placed second overall, the boys squad won the Boys Team trophy and the overall Team Trophy – beating 13 other teams – was won by Sheffield Diving. Commenting on the events of the weekend, Sheffield Diving coach Georgia Davenport said, “It’s really encouraging to see these younger divers coming through with such good results. We could be seeing some future Olympians making their first steps on the road to success. We’re very proud of their hard work, positive attitudes and fantastic results.”
Sheffield Diving took a squad of 9 young divers to the John Charles Sports Centre in Leeds over the weekend, to join 64 other divers from 14 clubs in the biggest testing event in the country. The two-day competition puts the divers through a series of physical and technical tests designed to hone in on the most accomplished diving talent, with a view to inviting the best youngsters to join the Swim England Diving Team Z. This two-year programme supports the divers through a series of training camps and aims to prepare them for the prestigious Junior Elite Championships at the end of the period. The first day consisted of dry-land skills only, which included physical testing of strength, balance and agility, dry-board skills and a diving-based gymnastics routine. The awards were presented by Olympic and Commonwealth Champion diver Jack Laugher and it was a successful day for Sheffield, with the team claiming 5 medals: Gold for Sebastian Willcox in the Boys E category; Silver for Hannah Gowan in Girls E and for Sophie Hancox in Girls D; and Bronze for Archie Biggin in Boys D and Etta Dodsworth in Girls D. Also in the top 6 were Theo Wellington (Boys D) and Jessica Ireland (Girls D). Day 2 was the day for finally getting wet as the competition moved to the pool and gave the children the chance to show off their skills from the 1m, 3m and 5m boards. Sheffield bagged another set of medals, with Sebastian Willcox wining his second Gold in Boys E. Also winning Gold was Hannah Gowan in Girls E, while Theo Wellington took Sheffield’s third podium place with a Bronze in the Boys D category. A top 6 place was achieved by Jessica Ireland in Girls D. The results were then totaled up from both days of the competition to give the overall combined rankings, bringing further success to Sheffield. Sebastian Willcox (Boys E) was awarded his
COUNTY SENIOR FOOTBALL with Michael Clarke
This past week the weather has began to turn and the County Senior League experienced a couple of weather related postponements of the season. Luckily the disruption was only minimal and 17 games took place on the weekend. Premier Division Goals from Carey Welford and Carl Woodhead were enough to give league leaders North Gawber Colliery a 2-1 away win over Oughtibridge WMSC. North Gawber’s lead stands at three pints, as second placed Dodworth Miners Welfare were not in action. Third placed Penistone Church Reserves, fresh off victory last week against North Gawber, travelled to the Look Local Stadium to face fourth placed Stocksbridge Park Steels Reserves. The game ended all-square 1-1. The point means both Penistone and Stocksbridge are six points off the pace. Grimethorpe Sports scored five for the second consecutive weekend, as they beat High Green Villa 5-1 at Grimethorpe Sports Ground. The win means Grimethorpe remain in sixth, but they have played the least of any team in the division. Frecheville were the big winners on the weekend, recording a 7-1 home win over South Kirkby Colliery. Leon Howarth starred for Frecheville, scoring a hat-trick. Goals from Simon Chadburn and Jacob Simon gave 10 man Wombwell Main a 2-1 home win over Jubilee Sports. Wombwell climb into eighth with the win. At Old Road, Hepworth United ran-out 3-1 winners against Denaby United to record their first away win since late-September. Division One Ecclesfield Red Rose 1915 made it 11 straight
wins this past weekend, with a 4-1 away win over bottom side Millmoor Juniors. Ecclesfield’s lead remains at five points, as second placed Burngreave FC were also victorious, beating Wombwell Main Reserves 6-3 at Firvale Academy. A further couple of points behind are AFC Dronfield, who this weekend beat 10 man Boynton Sports 2-1 at Killamarsh Juniors Football Ground. However, Dronfield have played two more games than their rivals. Houghton Main’s incredible run of form continued, as they beat Sheffield Medics 3-0 at home. Houghton Main are now seven games unbeaten, claiming 17 points in that period, and climbing into fourth place in the process. Just a point behind Houghton Main are Hemsworth Miners Welfare Reserves, who also won 3-0 at home, but against Caribbean Sports. Kiveton Park made it back to back 2-0 wins, as they saw off Denaby Main at the UPVC Trade Centre Ground. The win takes Kiveton into seventh place. Division Two Wombwell Town stretched their 100% start to the season to nine games, with a 3-0 away win over AFC Dronfield Reserves. Just a point behind are Sheffield Union, who beat Arsdley Athletico Juniors 2-1 at Netherwood ALC on Saturday. The Union have played two games more than Wombwell. Two goals from Omar Boudabouza and strikes from Oliver Ward and Howard Wood gave Thurcroft Miners Institute a 4-2 win against Worsbrough Bridge Athletic Development. Thurcroft move into fifth position with the win. Elsewhere, New Bohemians were 1-0 winners over Dodworth Miners Welfare Reserves at Forge Valley School and Stocksbridge Park Steels Development were 6-2 winners at home against Swinton Athletic Reserves.

MCCANN’S PRAISE FOR SUPERB ROVERS FANS Manager Grant McCann has praised Rovers supporters after their incredible backing of the team this season. With close to 2,000 fans spurring the players on at Oakwell on Saturday, McCann felt the fans had really inspired his players. He said: “They were the best I’ve seen since I’ve been at this football club, they were nonstop, and they drove the boys out there. “They have been tremendous since Cliff Byrne and I came in, they get behind us, are patient when they need to be and really back us. I
cannot ask for more, and it’s just a shame we couldn’t find the winner on Saturday to reward them. “We’re looking to build that momentum now, we’ve played against some very good teams in this league so far, and I’ve said it early on that there’s nothing to fear in this league, and I think we’ve shown here we are one of the best in this division in my opinion.” Niall Mason, who deputised at centre-back for the game, also praised the fans in his postmatch press duties. He said: “They were magnificent again, but we come to expect that from them no matter where we are. “This game is a short trip, but when we went to Plymouth earlier in the season there was a tremendous following there as well - the lads all really appreciate the backing.” Rovers Half Season Memberships are available now – online at tickets.clubdoncaster.co.uk, at the Club Doncaster Box Office in person or via telephone 01302 762576.

BOSS’ MILLERS VERDICT The Blades boss didn’t think his side even deserved the point they got from the Millers game. Chris Wilder was critical of his team following Saturday’s draw against Rotherham United. Goals from Mark Duffy and Chris Basham twice put the Blades ahead, but Jamie Proctor’s goal in stoppage-time recused a point for the home side. And afterwards, Wilder admitted it was the least the Millers deserved, he remarked: “The performance wasn’t good enough, but full credit to Paul (Warne) and his team. “They were the better side in and out of possession, they won more first and second balls, they looked hungrier than us and their equaliser at the death summed our performance up really. “We nearly got away with one, because we didn’t play well, apart from the goalkeeper.
We could have made any changes really, we changed the shape three or four times. “We were very, very poor, but let’s compliment the opposition, I’d have been disappointed with not getting win if I were in their changing room.” Wilder added: “We sent the warning signs out to the players, we did our preparation and told them what was coming, but we played too short and dipped our toe into tackles.
“We played in the wrong areas, we played our own game when we should have recognised the need to miss out the midfield at times when under pressure. “Disappointing too many perhaps came here expecting a comfortable afternoon, it’s not been a good day. “I won’t hide behind the point, we didn’t do enough to win the game, but there were four or five mistakes that contrive to the second equaliser.”
HENDERSON RUES MILLERS DRAW Despite a man of the match performance, Dean Henderson acknowledged the Blades were well belowpar in Saturday’s draw at Rotherham. Speaking after the 2-2 stalemate at the AESSEAL New York Stadium, the Manchester United loanee was clearly annoyed the Blades didn’t manage the game better, having led in both halves. He remarked: “We
got our noses in front and started the game brightly, but we needed to build on that and put Rotherham on the edge. “We needed to get a grip, we knew what it was going to be like, they work hard for set-pieces and they throw everything at you. They worked us out and wanted it more than us. “We didn’t turn up, when we are at our best teams can’t handle us, but we have to keep standards

high and be relentless.” Henderson added: “If we want to be successful we’ve got to be consistently at our best, at the moment we’ve not been consistent enough and we’ve got to learn how to see the game. “It’s so frustrating to get caught so late on, especially having been leading twice. It was just sloppy moment after sloppy moment and it’s cost us the chance to win three points.”
The striker, who has netted eight times for United’s U23s this term, moves to the Proact Stadium with immediate effect. The 20-year-old could make his Spireites debut at Eastleigh in the National League on Saturday.

WE GET SOMETHING ON ANOTHER DAY Goals change games as the saying goes – and Wednesday fell foul of that adage at Hillsborough on Saturday.
After taking the lead through Adam Reach, the Owls were hit by two quick-fire Derby strikes that altered the course of the contest and destiny
of the points. Wednesday went on to create further chances and manager Jos Luhukay insisted that on another day, his side
would have claimed at least a point. He said: “We started the game really well for the first half an hour and got the goal we deserved. “I think if we score another goal at this time then we can win this game but instead Derby score twice in about five minutes and this was against the run of play. “But after that we had most of the ball, we create chances, but we could not score. “Fernando has the chance, Morgan Fox hits the post and if one of those chances goes in we have a different game.” Luhukay explained his thoughts behind the change in formation and why Steven Fletcher
was not included in the matchday squad. He said: “I believe this was the best way to approach this game against Derby and the plan worked for a lot of the time. “We had the chances and it we did not lose because of the formation,
this does not win or lose games. “With Steven, he has had a very intensive week with the Scotland international team and we decided he would be better for the rest as we have another important game on Tuesday.”
OWLS TO PAY RESPECTS TO KEVIN AUSTIN Sheffield Wednesday were saddened to learn of the passing of former academy coach Kevin Austin. The former Barnsley and Chesterfield defender worked with the Owls youth set-up after hanging up his boots following a two-decade playing career. Kevin was an immensely popular figure with staff, players and parents at Sheffield Wednesday having coached the schoolboy age groups in the Owls academy. He later joined Scunthorpe as Youth Development Phase Lead Coach in September 2016. The Owls Under-16s and Under-18s face Hull City on Saturday morning at Middlewood Road, while the schoolboy age groups face Leicester on Sunday morning. All academy fixtures this coming weekend will be preceded by a minute’s silence. RIP Kevin [1973-2018]
