SHEFFIELD IS ON THE MAP FOR UEFA WOMEN’S EURO 2021 Sheffield will be a host city when England stages the prestigious UEFA Women’s EURO 2021 championships it was revealed thise week. Sheffield United’s Bramall Lane stadium will stage games in the prestigious continental championship featuring teams from 16 countries which will be played at eight venues across the country before concluding with a showpiece final at Wembley Stadium. The decision to award

the event to England and details of the cities and the stadiums were revealed this afternoon by UEFA at a media conference in Dublin. The announcement is a boost for the economy and profile of the Sheffield area, Sheffield United’s aspirations to host increasing numbers of high-profile fixtures at the club’s stadium and the development of the women’s game at all levels across the region. The bid to stage the tournament was

submitted by the Football Association as part of its ‘Gameplan for Growth’ strategy to grow the women’s game, and followed the successful Euro 2017 campaign in the Netherlands which saw England reach the semi-finals, generating a record peak audience of four million TV viewers in the UK. Sheffield City Council and Sheffield United worked with other partners across the city to contribute to the FA’s bid for the competition,

which also includes provision for team training facilities. Councillor Mary Lea, Cabinet Member for Culture, Parks and Leisure at Sheffield City Council, said: “This is not only fantastic news for England, but for Sheffield and the City Region. Sheffield is the home of football and the sport has a proud place in our city’s history. I’m thrilled that the combined efforts of the council and our partners at Sheffield United have

helped to secure this world-class event, which as a city we are well equipped to deliver. The competition will be especially exciting for women and girls who are interested in sport and for everyone who’s a football fan but more importantly will inspire a whole new generation of female footballers.” The next key date will be the draw for the qualifying group stage, which will be held on 22 February next year. Following that, the qualifiers will be played from August 2019 to September 2020 to determine 12 of the finalists, with the playoffs determining the last three entrants in October 2020.

COUNTDOWN TO DONCASTER’S MINING STATUE FUNDRAISING DEADLINE Fundraising for Doncaster’s Mining Statue will close on 10th December – and the public, businesses and organisations across the borough are being asked to get involved and help make this town centre tribute to the borough’s mining communities happen. The statue is of significant importance to Doncaster as it draws on the stories and experiences of our former mining communities. It will also be the first

mining statue located in the heart of the town centre, a talking point for residents and visitors alike. Ros Jones, Mayor of Doncaster, said: “We’re asking the people of Doncaster to get involved in whatever way they can. The sculpture will be a world class piece of art, and a permanent reminder of all those hardworking and brave men and women who did so much to build our town and deserve

thanks from all of us. “As with many others, it is a subject close to my heart. My Dad was a miner, and I grew up as part of a mining community, an extended family that looked out for each other, no matter what. “Let’s make this happen!” Internationally acclaimed artist, Laurence Edwards, has been commissioned to produce a thought provoking statue, one that will capture the voices

of miners, colliery staff and their families for generations to come. How people can get involved? Please support the Spacehive crowdfunding campaign - which will be running until 10 December 2018 - to raise over £130,000. You can pledge online from as little as £2, and every pledge takes us a little closer to our goal. No money will be taken before the campaign ends, and it

is completely secure, so please rest assured that your money is safe and will go directly to the costs of the statue. The whole process only takes a couple of minutes and you can find out all you need to know here: www.doncastersminingstatue. org.uk You can also send a cheque made out to Doncaster Council addresses to Doncaster Museum, Chequer Rd, Doncaster DN1 2AE, UK

This month sees Def Leppard deliver what many fans have been waiting for – the Hysteria album performed in full plus other Def Leppard hits at the FlyDSA Arena on Friday 14th December. Rick “Sav” Savage says, “After many requests from fans in the U.K, I'm delighted that we can bring the whole “Hysteria” album to arenas across Britain and Ireland later this year. From 'Women' to 'Love and Affection' plus many other faves thrown in for good measure. Oh, and our old pals Cheap Trick will be there also to help with the celebrations!! We can't wait”. These will be the first Def Leppard UK & Eire tour dates since the sold-out Arena run in late 2015. The band will return to Sheffield next week to play their ninth show at the FlyDSA Arena which is sure to be a monumental homecoming show. 2018 also marks the 35th anniversary of “Hysteria’s” predecessor “Pyromania”. The seminal 1987 Hysteria album is rightly seen as a landmark recording in the history of rock music. It was the album that saw Def Leppard conquer the world with global hits such as Animal, Pour Some Sugar On Me, Hysteria, Armageddon It, Love Bites, Woman and Rocket. The band will deliver Hysteria in full alongside other songs from their incredible catalogue. The legendary British rock icons will also debut their full recording catalogue worldwide via https:// DefLeppard.lnk.to/Digital. One of the last multi-platinum selling acts to be made available on streaming and download platforms, music fans from all corners of the globe can now enjoy tracks and albums from Def Leppard who have sold more than 100 million albums worldwide to become one of rock’s most enduring and influential bands.

Said Joe Elliott, “It is with a mixture of relief & euphoria that we now see our entire catalogue finally getting a digital release. Having embraced every other format with open arms, especially & more recently the re-emergence of vinyl, we’re now going to be available to everyone everywhere and honestly, it’s as exciting as the original releases were.” As a cornerstone of rock and roll’s history, Def Leppard’s substantial career includes numerous hit singles including their first early chart hit “Wasted” -- to their radio and MTV staples “Bringin’ On The Heartbreak”, “Photograph”, “Rock of Ages”, “Too Late”, “Animal”, “Armageddon It”, “Love Bites”, “Rocket” and “Let’s Get Rocked.” Their groundbreaking multi-platinum albums—including two of the best-selling albums of all time with sales of more than 10 million copies each in the U.S. alone Pyromania and Hysteria, captured some of the group’s legendary tracks, bringing together classic Leppard hits such as “Pour Some Sugar on Me”, “Hysteria” and “Foolin’.” The group continued their success expanding into the world of film, covers, and new collaborations including “Two Steps Behind” from the film Last Action Hero, “No Matter What”, “Waterloo Sunset”, and “Nine Lives” with Tim McGraw as well as Def Leppard hits “When Love and Hate Collide”, “Slang”, “Work It Out”, “Promises” and “Now.” Finally, all of Def Leppard’s awe-inspiring music is available to everyone, around the world from the band’s eponymous debut EP through to their most recent album.

1295 05/12/2018 AGE UK RESPONDS TO WINTER DEATH FIGURES New figures released by the Office for National Statistics last week show that over the winter of 2017-18 there were nearly 46,000 excess winter deaths among people aged 65 and over. Excess winter deaths compares the number of deaths between December and March to those during the rest of the year. Responding to the new figures, Age UK’s Charity Director Caroline Abrahams, said: “Last winter there were nearly 46,000 excess winter deaths amongst people aged 65 and over – a shocking 92 per cent of all excess deaths – equating to 379 older people a day. These distressing figures are now the highest we’ve seen in over 40 years. A toxic cocktail of poor housing, high energy prices and ill health can make winter a dangerous time for many older people, and tragically it is the oldest old and those who are the most vulnerable who particularly suffer the consequences. We know such high levels of excess winter deaths are not inevitable. As a country we are not doing enough to ensure our older population stays warm and well throughout the harsh winter months. Age UK is urging older people to do everything possible to protect themselves

against the threats posed by the winter cold – and it is vital that we pull together and make sure we all help those around us.” Anyone who is concerned about staying warm and healthy this winter should call the Charity’s advice line free of charge on 0800 169 6565 or visit ageuk.org. uk/winter for a free copy of its annually updated guide Winter wrapped up and to browse our advice on staying warm and healthy in winter. Ways to protect yourself during the winter · Have a flu vaccination every year – the new vaccine introduced this year for people 65+ has an agent which helps boost the immune system and helps fight illnesses. · There is also a pneumonia vaccine. Find out if you’re eligible when you have your flu jab. · Keep your hands clean - good hand hygiene helps stop infections spreading. · Keep simple cold and sore throat remedies in your medicine cabinet to treat minor illnesses when they strike. · Wrap up when you go outside in the cold; use multiple layers and keep hands,

feet and face warm and covered with scarves, gloves and thick socks. · Eat well – make sure you eat at least one hot meal every day, hot drinks throughout the day to keep up energy levels. · Keep warm to stay well - your living room temperature to 21 degrees and your bedroom temperature to 18 degrees and take particular care if you going from a warm environment into the cold. · Keep moving – try not to sit still for more than one hour at a time even if you just move your arms and legs. Not only will it keep you fit and healthy, it will also generate heat to keep you warmer. Ways to keep your spirits up It’s not unusual to feel a bit blue in the winter months. When the weather’s miserable and the evenings are darker, it can be harder to get out and about and do the things you enjoy. Stay connected Try to keep to your usual routine as much as possible. If you can’t visit friends or family, phone them, use email or try video call services. If getting out and about feels difficult, why not ask if others could visit you a little more over winter? HOW TO SAVE ON CHRISTMAS DINNER For many families, Christmas is one of the few times of the year when all loved ones are gathered around the table. But while it’s great to get everyone together of course, those hosting a big Christmas gathering may be a little worried about the cost of having so many mouths to feed. Around a quarter of households’ Christmas spending will go on food and drink, research suggests. It’s not too late to start planning and thinking ahead about ways to help cut the cost of the festive feast, rather than panic-buying at the last minute and blowing the budget. 1. Make the most of yellow stickers While you’ve still got some time, have a browse around the supermarkets to buy reduced items, particularly if you’re able to make use of items by putting them in the freezer for a few weeks so they’ll be readily available when you need them.

2. Plan buying any meat in advance In the run-up to Christmas, many people will be shopping for turkey, chicken, gammon and beef – potentially leaving some shoppers struggling to get the bird or joint they want, and finding themselves limited to the stock that’s left. But if you’re planning to freeze your meat, you could buy it further in advance and potentially have your choice of what’s available, and buy in the sizes that you need. Just ensure you have the space in your freezer to store it. Another option could be to find out from your local butcher or supermarket if they will take orders in advance that you can collect closer to Christmas. 3. Consider alternatives to turkey While many people have a big, traditional turkey in mind when picturing their perfect Christmas, if you don’t think you’re going to eat your way through it all

(or, if you’re really honest, none of you even like it that much) then an alternative option, such as a chicken, could work out less expensive (and easier to cook!). 4. Get your hands dirty Instead of buying pre-sliced veg and microwave veg packs, get stuck in – peel and chop your own potatoes and slice your own veg. If you’ve got all the family round, there will be more people available to help out! Likewise, don’t buy pre-made pigs in blankets, stuffing and all the other extras you like with your Christmas dinner. Buy the ingredients and spend a little time making them from scratch. 5. Only use what you need It’s so easy to go overboard and cook enough to feed a small army at Christmas, but by doing this it’s likely that a lot of food will go to waste. If people are still hungry afterwards, there’s likely to be plenty of other snacks and food in the kitchen that they can tuck into. 6. Ask guests to bring a dish

0114 243 3933 If you’re entertaining others at your home for Christmas, you could ask guests to help out a bit by bringing drinks, crackers, or even preparing a dish or two if they live nearby. This may seem a more agreeable option for some than asking guests to make contributions to the cost of Christmas dinner in cold, hard cash. Just be sure to decide ahead of time who’s preparing what dish, so you don’t end up with three bowls of roast potatoes and no veg. 7. Ahead of next Christmas, consider growing your own While it’s too late in the year to start growing your own veg for the table now, you could always get a head-start on next year and start working on your own small vegetable patch. It doesn’t have to take up a lot of space in the garden, and you can grow all sorts of veg, some of which you may be able to freeze to keep for longer.

SARAH NULTY TO RECEIVE POSTHUMOUS AWARD LOCAL TRIBUTE ARTIST PRESENTS FOR OUTSTANDING CONTRIBUTION TO FESTIVALS CHARITY WITH £10K DONATION The prestigious UK Festival Awards have announced that Sarah Nulty, the Director and co-founder of Sheffield’s Tramlines Festival, will be honoured with the ‘Outstanding Contribution to Festivals’ award at its forthcoming ceremony on 6th December at the Troxy in London. Sarah, aged 36, passed away, just weeks before Tramlines’ 10th birthday following a short illness. Sarah joins an illustrious group of festival professionals in receiving this award. Past winners have included Michael Eavis (the founder of Glastonbury), Rob Da Bank (the founder of Bestival) and Fiona Stewart (the founder of Green Man). This award can be considered the highest accolade for any individual working in the UK Festival industry, which is recognised as a world leader in this area. Sarah came to Sheffield as a student in 1999 and following various roles in

the local music industry including managing venues and running events, she was appointed Festival Director of Tramlines in 2013 having been instrumental in the launch of the festival in 2009. Tramlines Festival was an immediate success, bringing hundreds of thousands of people to Sheffield in its first year. Through Sarah’s stewardship, the festival overcame fundamental changes in the way it was funded and delivered, and the hugely successful 10th edition was testament to her tremendous work ethic and passion for Sheffield music. This latest award can be added to an impressive array of awards and honours bestowed on Sarah. On 6th November she was given an Outstanding Contribution Award from the Association of Independent Festivals, and she also received a Civic Award from Magid Magid, The Lord Mayor of Sheffield. Sheffield

City Council have created a permanent memorial for Sarah in the form of a commemorative plaque at Devonshire Green in Sheffield City Centre, the original home of the main stage for Tramlines Festival. Tramlines Operations Director Timm Cleasby commented: "We are all so proud that Sarah has received this hugely deserved award. To be recognised by the UK Festival Awards for all her hard work, drive and determination, is a true

honour to her memory, and to the legacy she's left behind in Tramlines”. In announcing this award, Michael Baker of the UK Festival Awards said: “The legacy Sarah leaves behind is in Tramlines, the festival industry, and the inspiration and encouragement she’s given to young women who aim to follow in her footsteps. Her work across Sheffield spanned nearly two decades and led to massive benefits to the city”

DALE TAVERN

Local Vera Lynn tribute artiste, Lorrie Brown and Groovy Gazza Productions, have just paid a visit to the Dame Vera Lynn Childrens Charity in Sussex and presented them with a cheque for £10,000, which has been collected whilst the company have been touring their 1940’s shows. The cheque was received by Dame Vera’s daughter, Virginia. The charity offers support and therapy to children under 5 and their

families. Lorrie says, ‘While we were there they showed us round to see the work they do and there were a few children attending, receiving therapy while we were there, the parents said how much of a help it had been in both helping their daughter and as support for the parents. It was an amazing place and so rewarding seeing where the money raised is actually making a difference to these children lives’. Lorrie, who is a regular

with South Yorkshire audiences, performing in Sheffield and Rotherham on Armed Forces Day as well as appearing in several of the hotels in South Yorkshire, met her idol, Dame Vera Lynn in 2015 after winning a national award for her tribute show. During the time they spent together Lorrie asked about Dame Vera’s charity and offered to collect for them at her shows. In 2017, on the forces Sweetheart’s 100th birthday, She started a 50 date tour of a brand new

show, ‘Sincerely Yours. The Vera Lynn Story’. Telling the story of Vera Lynn and featured a 7 piece band and George Formby tribute, Colin Bourdiec. The 2nd show on the tour was at the Rotherham Civic and it finished last December at the Sheffield City Hall. As well as collecting on the tour, Lorrie collects at her solo shows which appear all over the UK in private hotel bookings and 1940’s events. Lorrie can be next seen locally in Rotherham on Dec 13th, along with her George Formby partner, at the Holiday Inn, Rotherham performing their ‘Stars of the 1940’s’ show.

MERCURY M T RS FROSTY CAR WINDOWS COULD COST YOU THIS WINTER With temperatures falling across the UK this week, drivers are being warned they face penalty points and even a fine if they fail to clear their windscreens in the morning. If you’re running late on a winter morning, you might think it’s a good idea to save some time by

only clearing just enough ice off your windscreen so you can see out of it — but think again. This practice is called ‘portholing’ and while it might seem like a good way to bag some extra time in the morning it could also see you bag a £60 fine and three points on your licence. Rule 229 of the Highway Code clearly states that before setting off in the winter drivers should make sure that they clear all snow and ice from their windows. Failure to do so means you wouldn’t have a full view of the road and traffic ahead, which could see a police officer slap you with a £60 fine for your car being in a “dangerous condition.” It’s not just ice on the windows either, because too much mist or condensation on the glass could also see you fall foul of a fine if you are unable to look out safely and properly.

When heavy snow hits, motorists should also make sure they clear off any snow from their roofs in case it falls onto the road and causes problems for other road users. Richard Gladman, head of driving and riding standards at IAM RoadSmart, said preparation was key for motorists looking to avoid dangerous situations on the roads as the temperatures drop. He said: “Don’t rely on the performance of your car systems to get you out of trouble – allow time, make sure you have good visibility all round and carry the right equipment. “If conditions are extreme, remember the best advice is not to travel.”

Sheffield just got a whole lot more AccessAble National disability organisation AccessAble launched their brand-new Yorkshire-wide website and App in Sheffield last week, helping people with disabilities get the most out of Sheffield and the region. The launch event, hosted by Sheffield City Council, brought together disabled people, disability organisations and AccessAble’s partners to showcase the new App and website. They feature 1,000s of places across the region, all visited and assessed by AccessAble’s surveyors. Speaking about the need for the service disabled vlogger, Kat Pemberton said: “After attending the Yorkshire launch, I can confidently say that I feel encouraged to wheel out of my comfort zone as I fully trust the people behind AccessAble. I do have to admit that over the years, whenever certain venues have failed to accommodate the appropriate facilities, I have felt unwelcome. It can be a huge knock on my confidence and this

has resulted in me becoming a creature of habit. I find that I tend to fall into routines and limit myself from visiting any unknown locations. But I’m now just a quick click away from finding the nearest accessible gin bar for cocktails with the girls or a causal restaurant for a family meal. I no longer have to spend hours trying to arrange an outing to an unfamiliar location. Which is great as not only has it encouraged me to explore new places, it will help avoid any unnecessary anxiety in the future. The team at AccessAble have made it their mission to restore the confidence of people like myself and improve businesses, to unite and harmonise our daily lives as a society. You can tell how much passion and drive the team at AccessAble have. I often worry that the people behind an amazing idea may not have their hearts fully invested in their work, but you can rest assured that these guys do.” AccessAble’s Executive Director, Anna Nelson said “AccessAble exists is to provide detailed information to venues throughout the UK, so that disabled people, carers and anyone who needs to know more about accessibility can find out if a place will be right for them. We are passionate about delivering our social mission and helping more of the c.20m people in the UK who have

accessibility requirements. We believe our new website, App and name is key to achieving that. We are fortunate to work with a fantastic range of committed partners and disability organisations across Yorkshire. We hope they will inspire others to place accessibility at the heart of inclusive information provision.” Speaking about the launch and their ambitions for the city, Councillor Olivia Blake, Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Finance at Sheffield City Council said: “We have a vision for Sheffield to be the fairest city in Britain, where all people feel included anAs part of our commitment to promoting independence we began working with AccessAble in 2014. The service provides crucial, practical information that enables our residents and visitors to make the most of Sheffield, lowering the anxiety and challenges of visiting somewhere unfamiliar. Last year alone our guides were used more than 38,000 times. It’s fantastic to see the how far the development of the guides has come today and the new app means this information is accessible on the go which we know will help thousands of residents and visitors to Sheffield and beyond.” The new website and App has been made possible thanks to funding from NHS Property Services.

Andrew Flett, Head of Corporate Social Responsibility commented: “Every week millions of patients, their carers and their families visit NHS properties managed and owned by NHS Property Services. It’s important to us that all visitors have the information they need to make their stay as stress-free as possible. This is particularly important to those members of the public with additional accessibility needs. Through our three-year partnership with AccessAble we’re increasing the number of NHS sites with online user guides and are delighted that we’ve been able to fund development of the new website and mobile App which will be a useful resource for all patients, staff and visitors to our buildings.” As part of the launch AccessAble are publishing an important survey that highlights the vital need for better accessibility information. The survey revealed that 99% of disabled people want to know about accessibility before visiting a new place and 98% search for accessibility information in advance. Take a look at the new AccessAble website at www.accessable.co.uk or download the AccessAble App from the Apple Store or Google Play Store. User feedback is welcomed and can be sent to AccessAble at hello@AccessAble.co.uk, message on social media or call on 01438 842710. ANGLER’S CORNER

with Clint Walker

An exceptionally busy weekend saw me visit the headquarters of Spotted Fin, a relative newcomer to the angling market, but one making a lot of waves, and then travel onwards to attend the Carp Society Winter Show at Sandown Racecourse to help showcase the wares of sponsor RAD Angling, before returning home after three days away… I hit the road on Friday morning to travel into Hertfordshire for my first sight of the Spotted Fin factory. I’ve been doing my best to get there since becoming part of the promotional team almost two years ago, so I was looking forward to a look around, the opportunity to take some photographs for their Facebook (Coarse) page, and generally find out what goes on behind the scenes. Although a fleeting visit of around an hour, I had chance to check out some of the high-quality ingredients which go into their products, catch up on the latest gossip, take a load of images, and leave with some new baits, due for release in 2019, hidden away in my pockets! I’d call that a successful visit, and I even got a cup of tea! If you haven’t seen the Spotted Fin range yet (where have you been?) then check them out at www. spottedfin.com After that, it was back onto the M25 via Watford (traffic chaos!) to meet up with team RAD at Sandown, quickly manoeuvre our self-contained show trailer into the hall, spend a few minutes setting it up, then retire to the hotel for the evening. The RAD trailer is rapidly gaining a reputation as a ‘must-have’ bit of kit during show season, allowing our team to erect it and then shut it down at the end of the show in record time. Where others are spending hours packing up and carrying stuff to waiting vans, we can pack up, close up, and be on the road within thirty minutes! Back at the hotel, a team meal in the next door pub, a brief chat about the forthcoming show, a longer discussion about marketing, brand exposure and retail, then it was time for bed, and a few hours sleep before an early

LEAGUE CUP 2nd ROUND Cup Holders Wickersley Old Village are through to the next round of the League Cup after they beat Rossington Main at home by 4-2, scorers for the winners were Batchelor 3 and Lund, and for the home side it was Holvey and Simpson. Another side who are playing well in the Cup are HSBC Bank who travelled to play Doncaster Over 35s and came away wth an impressive 11-2 victory, with that man Morris on the score sheet once again, scoring 6 (his 24th of the season), Cook 3, Hitchinson and Hopkinson, Jones and Hopkinson for Doncaster. A clash between two Divsion 2 sides ended with Denaby United over coming a spirited Thorncliffe FC by 6-4, Light 3, Haynes 2, and Parkinson. Williams was Plough Rangers hero scoring all four goals in their 4-1 win against East Herringthore. Caribbean Sports had a walk over after their opponents Crown & Cushion withdrew from the League. The games between Dronfield Town and Fossils FC, and Swinton Athletic and Handsworth Parramore, Hemsworth Miners and Woodhouse West End were all postponed. SID BUTTERFIELD MEMORIAL TROPHY 1st ROUND Joker Over 35s played Premier side Royston Oakwood who have not won a game this season whether Joker thought it was going to be a walk over or not, they certainly got a shock as Roystonwon by 5-1, desite losing the referee

start on Saturday morning; miles driven so far, 190. The morning came around far too soon, and after sleeping beyond the alarm, it was a bit of a rush to get showered and squared away for the trip to the venue. On arrival, a lengthy stock count was accomplished by the existing team and two further additions who had arrived early to bolster our ranks, Russ and Leigh, a pair of show stalwarts, who are a pleasure to work with. Once complete, it was time to display the RAD products, ensure everything was polished up, the sweet bowl was full, and a cup of tea consumed before doors opened and the show began. Within minutes, our trailer was surrounded by interested punters keen to see new products (released at the show) and compare our new range of matt carbon with the long established glossy option. Anyone who ‘does’ a show will know that the first hour rarely brings much in the way of sales as customers spend that time (rightly) ‘tyre kicking’ to see who has bought what with them, and who is giving the best deal, so whilst we gamely demonstrated pods and other items, it wasn’t until 10am that things really got going… Things continued apace for most of the rest of the day, and we enjoyed closing sales, friendly banter, and making new friends, until suddenly, it was 5pm and the doors had closed. After a few minutes securing the trailer, restowing the products into the background and saying our goodbyes, we were all back at the hotel by 6pm. A quick shower to recover aching feet, we convened in the next door pub by 7pm, and enjoyed another meal together before a final drink and then back for some sleep; miles driven so far, 210. Sunday; time for a bumper breakfast (£9.50, how on earth do people afford to live ‘Down South’?) then back in the van to return to Sandown. Once again, the trailer display was laid out, we drank yet more tea, made a quick effort to nip over to other stands to see friends before the madness began all over again! As before, things were quiet for the first hour, then visitors really got into the swing of it, spending money, meeting their favourite anglers, listening to various talks and forums and generally having a good time. For us, it was a none stop stream of interested anglers, and personally, I enjoyed every minute of it until once again, it was time to shut up shop as the doors closed on another show. I made an effort to speak to an angler I admire greatly, Julian Cundiff, as much for his skills on the bank as for his writing and photography, but also because I think of him as the perfect role model for any angler looking to gain sponsorship or other recognition; follow Julian’s example, you won’t go far wrong… I wanted to pass on regards to Ian ‘Chilly’ Chilcott after recent ill health and was pleased to find him looking fit and well, then chat briefly to various other people just to catch up before we packed up and departed, so spent a few minutes racing around to find everyone. I had received a message to pick up Adam Penning’s latest book on behalf of a friend back home (a weighty tome it is too!) so needed to do that, pass on contact details to the Finygo gang so

nominated McVee of Joker the man of the Match after he scored their consolation . Mosborough Trinity beat Clowne Wanderers by 3-0, with Williams scoring all three goals. Oughtibridge War Memorial were beaten in extra time by High Green Vets by 6-4, after the sides were level at full time by 3-3, Tapudzai Storey, Williams, Wilson 3 (1pen). Firth 2, Fretwell and Ashford for Oughtibridge. Dinnington Town were 2-1 winners away at Elsecar Dynamoes, with goals from Thomson (pen) and Holmes, Reach for Elsecar. Sheffield Academicals beat Holling Wood Old Boys by 4-0 Doran 3 and Straw. West End Terriers lost at home to Scawthorpe Club by 4-1 Batley for West End. 45s TOPHAM CUP 1st ROUND HSBC BANK followed their 35s sides result by scoring 11 goals when they beat Penistone Church Vets by 11-0, Husband 3, Hine 3, Brookes 2, Gale, Bywater and Wilson. Wickersley Old Village beat Denaby United by 6 -3, O’Conner 2, Stacey, Dodsworth ,Nota and Walton. Elsecar Dynamoes travelled to play Old Edwardians and had a great win by 7-0, Hirst 3, Gillott 3 and Galvin. Plough Vets were leading Dronfield Town by 2-1 at half time but a spirited second half by Dronfield saw them run out 3-2 winners, with goas frm Scott, Leatherday and Marples, Scamell scoring a double for Plough. Ring O’Bells lost 9-2 at home to Phoenix.

we could stay in touch (you bring the biscuits next time!) and generally wish friends a safe journey, then it was time to slip the trailer back onto the pick-up, and leave to find the dreaded M25 once more… As expected, the motorway was jammed with traffic, and it didn’t get any better when I finally got onto the M1, with incorrect matrix signals and numerous accidents cramming everyone into the middle lane for the next twenty five miles! It was dark, raining, and everyone wanted to get home, so tempers were fraying somewhat! Eventually, after a journey which

lasted just under five hours, I got back and was able to rest my weary feet; miles driven, 410… So, the first show of the season was complete, RAD had done well, the team had worked hard and had fun, and we can now prepare for the next one. If you are asked to ‘do’ a show on behalf of a sponsor or supporter, then give it a go; it’s hard work, but great fun, and the networking opportunities are endless. Top show tip? COUNTY SENIOR FOOTBALL with Michael Clarke

December in the County Senior started with a heavy focus on cup competition. The entertainment this past weekend involved five League Cup 3rd Round games, five Brian Bradley Memorial Cup games and a handful of league games. League Cup 3rd Round Carribean Sports of Division One made light work of South Kirkby Colliery of the Premier Division, as they beat them 3-0 at Caribbean Sports Ground. There was a strange shock at the Look Local stadium, were Stocksbridge Park Steels Development beat Stocksbridge Park Steels Reserves. Dane Cloete and Ben Stinger were both on the score-sheet for Stocksbridge’s development outfit. High Green Villa of Division Two claimed the scalp of Wombwell Main Reserves of Division One in a nine goal thriller at St George’s Park. High Green made their way into the last eight with a 5-4 victory. Last years’ League Cup winners Swinton Athletic survived an early red card for Jonathan Billups to beat Frecheville 1-0 at Mexborough Athletic Ground. Samuel Green scored the vital goal to send Swinton in the hat for the Quarter-Final draw. Premier Division leaders North Gawber Colliery were 5-0 winners over Hemsworth Miners Welfare Reserves, despite being down to 10 men. The goals for North Gawber came from Carey Welford (2), Liam Marsden, Scott Chipchase and Meethew Thornton. Brian Bradley Memorial Trophy 1st Round Division One leaders were impressive 6-1 winners at home against AFC Dronfield Reserves, with goals from Daniel Barnett, Ryan McDonald (2), Harry Shaw, Robert Womack and Matthew Young. Goals from John Lufudu (2), Amgad Mohammed, Yasin Omar (2), Kassim Muhsin (2) and Yasar Mohammed gave Burngreave FC an emphatic 8-1 home win over Thurcroft Miners Institute. There was also another high-scoring tie at Old Road, where Denaby United beat Brinsworth Whitehill 9-2. Goals from substitutes Jansen Berry and Mitchell Wilshire gave Premier Division high-flyers Dodworth Miners Welfare a hard-fought 2-0 away win over Boynton Sports of Division One. Millmoor Juniors put aside their league struggles

as they beat Worsbrough Bridge Athletic Development 8-4 at Grange Park. Mike Parkinson starred for Millmoor, scoring a hat-trick, with Jason Cardwell, Liam Johnson (2) and Jamie Woodburn (2) also on target. Premier Division Wombwell Main made it three wins in a row for the first time this season, with a comfortable 3-0 home win over Handsworth Parramore Reserves. The win takes Wombwell into eighth, whilst Handsworth remain at the foot of the table. Third placed Penistone Church Reserves could not manage to fully take advantage of a short fixture list to cut the gap to their rivals. They did, however, manage a point, as they were held to a 1-1 draw at home against Oughtibridge WMSC. Division One Houghton Main’s charge up the First Division table continued as they beat Sheffield Medics 3-1 at Norton Playing Fields. Houghton main are into fourth place in the table, and are unbeaten in eight games. Division Two Sheffield Union took advantage of their rivals’ lack of league action this weekend, to move into first place in Division Two. The Union recorded their ninth win in 12 league games this term, with a 2-1 away win over Swinton Athletic Reserves. The Union lead the way by two points but have played more games than their rivals. Elsewhere, there was a rare goalless draw at Manton Athletic Sports Club between third placed United Worksop and Ardsley Athletico Juniors. A vacancy has occurred due to work commitments in the Sheffield and Hallamshire County Senior League which operates at level seven of the FA Pyramid for Player Registration Secretary from the 2019/20 season onwards. The position would be best suited to someone who is either retired or semiretired with a knowledge of computing which is essential and an overview of the FA’s Whole Game Player Registration System which would be advantageous but not essential as training would be given. Anyone interested to contact in the in the first instance the League Secretary by email at k.jeffs@sky.com

Millers Manager Paul Warne gave his thoughts after a 3-1 defeat at Carrow Road this afternoon. Despite taking the lead through Richie Towell, which carried through to half-time, three second-half goals saw the Millers’ seven-match unbeaten run ended by top-ofthe-table Norwich City. “I think, first half, we were excellent,” said Warne. “The lads have done everything we’ve asked. We’ve worked a good setpiece. “I thought we were really good. We frustrated them on the counter-attack and we were good. When we went in at half-time, nobody could complain that we were 1-0 up. I just asked the lads at half time for the same sort of thing. They were going to come out and have an intensity to their game – which there was. “Every goal you concede is bad, but the first one was a great one. It’s a great finish in the end and it brought the game back. The game levelled out at one-all. I’m hugely disappointed at the second goal. I’m screaming at the side because I can see what’s going to happen. Unfortunately, my players didn’t. “The second goal is a calamity and in the second half we didn’t make the ‘keeper make enough saves to come away with a point. In fairness, Marek’s saved a couple so it could have been a bigger score-line. But, for the

fairness, they’ve got some very good players throughout. “It would have been good if we could have got our first away win of the season here.” Warne’s hand was forced twice before the second-half commenced as Joe Newell and Clark Robertson had to be replaced due to injury. The Millers boss said the withdrawal of Robertson was “precautionary” due to a groin problem whilst Newell had an issue with his calf. “He (Newell) got a crack on his ankle then got a bit of fluid in his calf,” continued Warne. “He thought he could run it off but it got worse. “With any luck he (Proctor) should be all right for next week. No disrespect to Woody but you don’t want to have to be changing your centre-halves if you can help it. “That was a blow and it limits us to what we can do. I would have liked to have brought some more legs into the middle of the pitch. At the time I thought the ball was coming back too much. I put Procs up and I thought he was pretty amazing when he went on – it’s a pity he didn’t get enough service to get a goal. The two subs did kill us but it’s not an excuse, it’s part of the game.”

Signed Rotherham shirts have raised £3,561 for the UK’s largest Armed Forces charity, The Royal British Legion, in this season’s Sky Bet Poppy Shirt Auction. Match-worn Poppy shirts from Rotherham’s 2-1 victory over Swansea City on 3rd November were auctioned on the CharityStars website. The shirts raised an average of £178 with Semi Ajayi’s shirt raising the most, £324. The money raised will be used by the Legion to support the vital welfare services it provides to the Armed Forces community, such as the Battle Back Centre in Lilleshall which helps wounded, injured and sick Service personnel to achieve their best

possible recovery and either return to Service duty or to make a smooth transition to civilian life. The Royal British Legion’s Ben France said: “As the Centenary of the First World War comes to a close, The Royal British Legion is asking the nation to say Thank You to the First World War generation, who served, sacrificed and changed our world forever. “That’s not just the British Armed Forces, but those who fought alongside from all corners of the world, and the men, women and children who played their part and suffered hardships at home. “With the auction of the 2018 poppy shirts, we’re hugely grateful for the continuing support of our partners Sky Bet and the clubs of the English Football League. Through the incredible generosity of the fans, we will ensure today’s Armed Forces and their families receive the support they need, and their unique contribution is never forgotten” The auction remains ongoing with signed, match-worn Poppy shirts from clubs throughout the EFL available in the coming weeks.

STANCLIFFE PLEASED WITH FIRST-TEAM PROGRESSION OF YOUNGSTERS Paul Stancliffe says the number of youth team players involved in matchday squads this season is a sign of the real potential at the club. Stancliffe’s side have now reached the half-way point of their campaign which has seen players such as Branden Horton and AJ Greaves get spells in and around the firstteam while his side sit in the top-four of their division. He added: “AJ’s with the first-team at Charlton which is a plus, it’s a reward for him doing so

well and it’s great to see. “The team as a whole so far have been great with the start we had, but in the last couple games we’ve not picked up points which highlights how good we were at the start. “There are some good teams in this league so it’s guaranteed to be tough at times and we’ve done ever so well.” Stancliffe’s side were narrowly beaten 3-2 at Hartlepool on Saturday, with the home side snatching all the points with a late winner. Jack Watson and Rieves Boocock both scored in the encounter which saw Hartlepool mount a remarkable come-back late on. Stancliffe said: “I think we were unlucky because there were some spells where we played some really good stuff and got punished for little bad spells, which is fair play to them because they’ve been able to capitalise on that. “We had enough chances in the second-half to certainly get a point, if not three, which is disappointing. It was a good game involving two good teams, they should have enjoyed playing in conditions like this - and Dec Ogley’s played really well and pulled off some really good saves.”

BLADES SLIP TO NARROW DERBY DEFEAT United slipped to a narrow defeat in a fiercely contested Yorkshire derby at Bramall Lane. A rare mistake from goalkeeper Dean Henderson contributed to the only goal of the game, with Pablo Hernandez settling the contest in Leeds favour in the final ten minutes. Wilder made three changes for the latest Yorkshire derby, with Baldock, Duffy and Sharp all named in the starting XI. Lundstram and Washington both dropped to the bench, where they were joined by Cranie. United shaded the early exchanges, with Basham marauding forward on a couple of occasions. And on 10 minutes McGoldrick forced Peacock-Farrell into a fine save having been afford space 25 yards out.

Stevens became the first to see yellow midway through the first-half, for a soft foul on Klich. From the resulting free-kick, Henderson was the Blades saviour, denying substitute Halme from point-blank range with excellent reflex stop. Egan was then carded after Roofe turned him on the edge of the penalty area, but the Irish defender blocked the free-kick that followed. At the other end, Duffy fashioned out a cross having beaten Douglas. PeacockFarrell fumbled under pressure and although the referee had blown for a foul McGoldrick fired over. Roofe was then carded after body checking Egan. On the stroke of halftime, United should have hit the front. McGoldrick got the

better of Phillips and crossed inviting for Sharp, but the Blades skipper headed down and over under pressure from Peacock-Farrell. Leeds made a change the break, with Clarke replace Alioski. McGoldrick was flagged offside in what was a marginal call, before Baldock was cautioned for a foul on Clarke. Halme appeared to foul Sharp, but the referee waved played on and Clarke drew a comfortable save from Henderson. On the hour, Henderson was called into action again, to push away an effort from Klich who had beaten three defenders on the edge of area. Duffy was withdrawn, with Washington taking his place, a switch that saw McGoldrick drop into a deeper

role and he almost scored within a minute that. Halme miscued a clearance, Jansson denied Washington, before Peacock-Farrell regained his composure to save. There were 20 minutes remaining, when Baldock got the better of Douglas and Forshaw before teeing up Stevens, but his rasping drive was inches to high of Peacock-Farrell’s goal. In response, Leeds thought they had taken the lead, Dallas crossed to the near post and Roofe’s header went narrowly wide. The visitors continued to push, this time Klich fired over from distance. In the 82nd minute, Leeds opened the scoring. A mistake by Henderson left Clarke with the simple task of squaring to

HERNANDEZ to tap into the empty net. After not getting a number of decisions, Halme was booked for a late challenge on Sharp. Four minutes of added time were signalled and the second of those, Washington almost snatched an equaliser. Fleck’s corner wasn’t cleared and the substitute’s effort beat Peacock-Farrell, but hit the crossbar, as the visitors hung on the claim the spoils.
