DONCASTER’S MINING STATUE GETS THE GO AHEAD Doncaster’s proud mining heritage will be honoured for years to come with the exciting news this month that the campaign to build an iconic town centre tribute has been successful. Individuals, businesses and organisations have been supporting the campaign through online pledges and donations at locations across the borough, an exhibition about the project in the summer attracted over 1,500 visitors. Ros Jones, Mayor of Doncaster, is contributing part of her allowance over her four year term to help make the statue a reality and ensuring that an important part
of our borough’s history and community gets the recognition it deserves. The iconic piece of art will draw on the fascinating stories of our former miners and their families and when finished, will be located on Clock Corner easily accessible to Doncaster residents and visitors. It will be the first mining statue ever located in the town centre to keep these stories alive for our communities and future generations. Acclaimed international artist/sculptor Laurence Edwards has been commissioned to design the artwork and met with hundreds of local people. The meetings have held extra significance as
Laurence has sculpted the portraits of people from the various mining communities in wax while they have told their stories. These have then been cast in bronze and will be a part of the figurative, bronze mining statue. Now the fundraising target has been achieved, Laurence will start working on the mining statue in the new year and the finished piece of public art will be unveiled in autumn 2019. There will be a total of 40 bronze portraits of local people from mining communities in the sculpture. 21 of these heads have already been created and Laurence Edwards was
in Doncaster last week making six more portraits. Doncaster College filmed the new portrait sessions and these can be viewed via the Doncaster College YouTube page. Doncaster College will also be hosting another photo shoot to capture more local miners and their families. These photos will form part of an online archive, but with 13 heads still to be chosen there is still a chance of being picked to be included in the sculpture. Ros Jones, Mayor of Doncaster, said: “I am delighted that Doncaster will now have a permanent commemoration to its mining history and that the stories of our
wonderful miners and their families will be heard by future generations. “Thank you to everyone who has donated to our fundraising campaign to make the mining statue for Doncaster possible – and who have also shared our determination to ensure that the borough never forgets its proud mining heritage and the communities that grew up around it.” She added: “From the outset, I was committed to driving forward this important commemoration for Doncaster miners and I have pledged part of my allowance for my four year term of office to help make it happen.
“A mining statue for Doncaster will be a long lasting tribute to the thousands of hard working men and women, whose contribution to the growth and prosperity of the town must never be underestimated,
and to those miners whose lives were tragically lost working in the gruelling conditions that many of us could never begin to imagine. “During the course of the project, we have seen tremendous support from
our local former miners and their families who have told us how proud they are that their stories will be told and that in years’ to come their grandchildren can point to the statue and say ‘that’s my grandad or grandma.’”

INSPIRATIONAL SHEFFIELD WOMEN CELEBRATE VOTE CENTENARY The 14th December marked 100 years since women were first able to vote and stand as an MP in a general election. On Friday 14th December inspirational women from across Sheffield gathered at Sheffield Town Hall to celebrate 100 years since some women were able to vote and stand as an MP in a general election for the first time. A piece of silverwork
created by Sheffield artist Jessica Flinn was unveiled to mark the occasion and will be displayed in the Silver Room of Sheffield Town Hall. Councillor Mary Lea, Cabinet Member for Culture, Parks and Leisure said: “ I am proud to be part of a celebration of the work achieved by the very active suffragettes of this city. On the 14 December 1918, some women,
aged over 30, were able to vote and stand as an MP in a general election for the first time. Following this, the women of Sheffield continued their fight and nothing could stop the suffrage movement; eventually leading to all women winning the right to vote in 1928. In celebrating the progress that has been made, it is also important to recognise
the contribution of early female politicians such as Eleanor Barton, Labour candidate for Attercliffe in 1920, and Ann Eliza Longden, who was elected as Sheffield’s first female mayor in 1936. These women paved the way for others, including the female politicians and leadership in our Council today. Women have achieved
a great deal, but we must also not forget the women in other parts of the world who do not yet have the right to vote and whose fight continues.

ALBERT SNODGRASS I have bought my wife a fridge for Christmas. I can’t wait to see her face light up when she opens it. Will glass coffins be popular some day? Remains to be seen. Wife: Stop being an idiot. Just be yourself. Me: Make up your mind. Where do naughty rainbows go? Prism. I called the doctor “My wife is going into labour! What should I do?” “Is this her first child?” he asked. “No, this is her husband.” I hate Russian dolls. They’re so full of themselves. An Irish priest is driving along a country road when the police pull him over. He smells alcohol on the priest’s breath. He says: “Have you been drinking?” “Just water,” says the priest. The cop replies: “Then why do I smell wine?” The priest says: “Good Lord He’s done it again!”

LEARN ALL ABOUT FATHER CHRISTMAS Father Christmas and his elves will be hard at work in the North Pole preparing for the big day. With Christmas just a few days away, it is safe to say they will be extremely busy as they get ready in time for Santa and his Reindeer to travel the globe and deliver presents to children (and big kids) all over the world. Santa Claus is known by many names, including Saint Nick. Historians claim
that the history of Santa starts with the tradition of Saint Nicholas, a 4th century Christian priest who lived in the Middle East and became famous for his kindness. He was known for giving gifts to the less fortunate, sprinkling gifts of gold down people’s chimneys, and for hiding surprises in their stockings. Every year on Christmas Eve, NORAD tracks Santa Claus as he leaves the North Pole and delivers presents to children around the world.
Visit the Norad site and follow Santa across the skies as he delivers his presents. The site also has lots of information of Christmas Traditions from countries around the world. Learn about Santa and his elves, listen to Christmas music, play games and find activities as well.
FOOD CAMPAIGN REACHES 51 PER CENT FUNDING
going into bellies, not bins in Sheffield. We’ve already saved 319 tonnes in just 3 years and created 100,000s of meals with it but this is only 0.1% of food wasted in Sheffield. We need to do so much more to stop this.” “By supporting Food Works you will help us increase that 0.1% by having a stable base to operate from and we’d expand our work to include farms, producers and wholesalers. We’d then be able to begin preserving, storing, cooking and feeding people with food the second it gets to the warehouse. On top of this we’d increase our education programs to include workshops for all ages and get even more people in Sheffield engaged and involved. From volunteering to training to eating there really is something everybody can do to help solve Sheffield’s food waste problem.” “We’ve been blown away by the support we’ve had so far but know there is still work to do. 50% of the funds will help us with the warehouse lease and kitchen but the purchase of a walk-in fridge/freezer may not be possible if we don’t hit our target”. The team will also continue with the fantastic work they already do at The Real Junk Food Project Sheffield, running two pay-as-you-feel cafés, catering weddings
and events, education programs and the Sharehouse Market at Burngreave under a new, shorter name with a much bigger mission. The crowd funding campaign offers supporters some really great rewards Pledge from £5 upwards and you can receive a variety of rewards from Eco Mugs, Tote Bags, Christmas Hampers to Private Dining.. Full details of the rewards are available via https://www.crowdfunder.co.uk/ food-works-for-sheffield Everyone is encouraged to pledge if they can and share the campaign widely as sharing it helps enormously. The Real Junk Food Project Sheffield is a non-profit social enterprise saving food from being wasted and making it available to the people of Sheffield. Set up by Jo Hercberg in 2015 the the project is staffed by 5 FT, 3 PT and 180 volunteers It runs two pay-as-you-feel cafés, the Sharehouse Market and our Food Works for School program alongside our popular catering function. The project is powered by volunteers from all walks of life who give up their time to reduce food waste in Sheffield 6 days a week and save over 6 tonnes of food per week. The team won Sheffield Star’s Small Business Award 2018 in the CSR/Charity category and were finalists in the CitiBank Micro-Entrepreneur Awards 2018.
A project that will make a real dent in food waste, feeding people and sharing skills is celebrating a major milestone after raising half of what it needs to make a difference. The Real Junk Food Project Sheffield launched its campaign to build Food Works not Food Waste for Sheffield on 20th November and with just under two weeks left the idea has already received 51 per cent of funding. With help from generous members of the public and local businesses they hope to reach the full amount by 4pm on Christmas Eve. The team is looking to raise £50,000 through www.crowdfunder.co.uk to secure a long term warehouse lease, invest in commercial refrigeration units and onsite kitchen facilities so the team can really stamp out food waste in Sheffield. Project founder and director Jo Hercberg, said: “Building Food Works will transform the amount of perfectly good food

A confusing blend of energies early on could make misunderstandings a possibility Aries. For instance, you may give a gift meant for someone else or label presents incorrectly. Whatever occurs, others seem able to take it in their stride and to be able to laugh about it. Call for more astral advice...
If you still have last minute tasks to complete, then simplifying them as much as possible can make life easier. This lively week can see you connecting with friends and family you may not have seen in a while. Family plans could clash with your own, so a compromise may be needed. Call for more...
Despite one or two minor issues, this looks to be a positive week that can see you travelling to be with family and friends, or them visiting you. Either way, journeys can feature strongly. Whatever your plans, check that everything is in order first as muddles are possible. Call for more advice...
If you’re doing a last-minute shop, keep a track of spending and receipts, as a misleading influence could lead to you splurging or buying the wrong item. Aside from this, the holiday week can be a chance to unwind and get organized. You can be the life and soul of the party. Call for more...
As livewire Mercury once more angles towards confusing Neptune, don’t rush those last-minute tasks or responsibilities. Keep your eye on the details, and you’ll avoid having to do them again. The week ahead brings a chance to celebrate and to enjoy every moment, so relax. Call for more...
Your buoyant nature comes to the fore, with family and friends enjoying you being around to cheer up any social gathering. Do check times and places though, as a confusing aspect can lead to misunderstandings. Towards the end of the week, a desire for something can grow. Call for more...
If you had reservations about this holiday week, then the cosmic star map suggests they can prove unfounded. Things seem to unfold in a positive way, and you’ll be capable of handling whatever arises. Travelling? Check you haven’t forgotten to pack essential items Cancer. Call for more...
Your approach to the festivities may incline you to the spiritual, making this a time of charitable work and perhaps one of quiet reflection too. Even so, you may be the one that takes charge of the proceedings, making sure everything runs like clockwork. And you’ll do a sterling job. Call for more...
You may still be busy this week, but with a focus on fun and good times, you’ll likely have no difficulty juggling the two. Don’t rush those last-minute preparations though. Attend to details and progress can be swift. You may though opt for healthier festive fare, which is commendable. Call for more...
You can look forward to occasions that sizzle with festive promise. Still, you might also enjoy opportunities for quiet time, allowing you to deeply relax and recharge. Visits from those you don’t see very often may be on the cards, and this can add to the upbeat ambiance. Call for more news...
If you’re celebrating but also playing host this week, then it can be a fun-filled and very positive occasion. Even if a festive faux pas does occur, it’ll likely be laughed off. Drop any perfectionist tendencies and just enjoy being yourself. Solo? The end of the week has sizzle factor. Call for more...
Hosting a big gathering this week? Take extra care and be sure that you haven’t forgotten anything of vital importance. An awkward aspect involving Neptune, suggests keeping your to-do list close and referring to it often. Be sure to take time out for yourself Pisces. Call for more news and advice...

SHEFFIELD IN THE RUNNING FOR A NATIONAL BEST BAR NONE AWARD Sheffield's Best Bar None scheme has made it though to the second round of the prestigious ‘National Best Bar None Awards', and for a second year in a row, it has been successful in two out of three categories: Best Overall Scheme and Most Innovative Scheme. The next round of judging takes place in January and, if successful, scheme members could be celebrating at a special parliamentary reception at the House of Lords, where winners will be announced on Monday 4th February. A Home Office-backed scheme, which has been running for more than 15 years, Best Bar None sees the alcohol industry working collaboratively with local authorities and the police to promote responsible drinking and higher professional licensing standards in bars, pubs, clubs and entertainment venues. There are currently 49 active schemes across England and Wales, encompassing hundreds of licensed premises across over 70 towns and cities. Premises are audited by trained assessors for operational standards, policies and procedures, as well as the education and training of staff. This national awards ceremony is the highlight of the Best Bar None calendar. There are three categories for entry: · 'Best Overall Scheme' - presented to the scheme that has had the biggest impact on the local area · 'Most Innovative Scheme' - awarded to the most creative concept or initiative introduced to make a difference in the local area
· 'Best New Scheme' - open to any scheme that has been running for less that 18 months In 2019, the Sheffield scheme will celebrate its 10year anniversary. The scheme's core aim is to create a safe night-time community and as a result Best Bar None is well-known and respected among customers and venues across the city. Sheffield was the first scheme to launch a Best Bar None App, which it has now shared with a number of other regional schemes throughout the country. Commenting on their success so far, Scheme Coordinator, Tracey Ford, said: "Winning a national award for the second year running would be an incredible achievement, and would mean a lot, to not only Sheffield licensed premises, but to all our stakeholders who absolutely deserve the recognition for helping us sustain the scheme over the past ten years. We are lucky in Sheffield that we are all committed to working to keep and maintain Sheffield’s reputation as one of the safest cities". National Coordinator for Best Bar None, Mick McDonnell, said: "I'd like to thank all the schemes that took the time to enter. It is fantastic to read about the different initiatives that have been introduced to improve community safety and encourage widespread participation in their areas. The awards are always a highlight for me and I am pleased and proud that we are able to recognise and reward our scheme members. "The standard of entries this year was particularly high, so Sheffield has done really well to get to this stage. I would like to congratulate all those involved with the scheme and I wish them all the very best in the next round of judging."
HYSTERIA AT THE FLYDSA ARENA AS DEF LEPPARD RETURN HOME LIVE REVIEW BY ROY GOODALL Always having some form of game plan up their collective sleeves, Sheffield boys Def Leppard took their home arena by storm on their current trek around Britain. Opting to play eighties album Hysteria in its entirety, a piece of music that’s over thirty years old wasn’t something I’d choose to do as you’re trading on past glories and it can all sound dated. I much prefer their last studio album. Still, apparently it sold a few… Anyway, album track opener Women got the ball rolling and the whole twelve song affaire was played in running order, with mouth piece Joe Elliott saying very little, though he did give the band a pat on the back for being inducted into the Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall
DALE TAVERN
Of Fame. The packed house did love it though, with quite a chunk of the audience not even born when the product hit the record stores. Yes folks, that’s where we got our music from back then. So for the new generation of fans I guess this was a real feast. What Def Leppard really do well though is put on a show as the lights, video back drop and overall production looked and sounded good, though at times I did feel it was a tad loud in parts. With the album finished, complete with respectful video tribute to the late great Steve Clark and speeches over, they returned with Wasted. This is a great, rarely heard tune from the very early days and followed with Love And Hate Collide, and Let’s Get Rocked, which one and all enjoyed. Drummer Rick Allen, the Dronfield Dynamo as Joe referred, got a nice mention though had it been me I’d have dragged the young man to the front to really lap up the applause. He really is an inspiration. As is customary, Rick then introduced Rock of Ages with Photograph closing the night. With the job done and just three shows left, Def Leppard are then on hiatus until the summer when it all kicks off again around Europe but I for one will be waiting for the next album, though with Def Leppard you just never really know what’s coming next.

ANGLER’S CORNER
with Clint Walker
I’ve been out for a couple of sessions this week, and during both, I’ve been freezing cold as the winter weather finally starts to bite, but despite any discomfort, I’ve been fortunate enough to catch some fish too! During the colder months, I tend to drop onto waters with a much higher density of fish in my efforts to keep catching. It makes sense; the more fish, the better chance of a bite, so this week, I visited a local club water to catch up with a good mate, and hopefully catch some cold carp. As usual, I struggled a bit to get out of a nice warm bed, but when I arrived, Andy was already fishing, but had nothing to report, nor had he seen any signs of fish… not very encouraging. I dropped into a swim a few pegs down and quickly tackled up a feeder rod and reel which was spooled with 10lb line. You may consider that heavy, but as carp run to around 20lb, and almost every fish is in double figures, I wanted to avoid a break, and give myself a chance of landing fish which, for some reason, seem to fight exceptionally hard in this water. At the business end, a method feeder, short hook link to a size 12 QM1 hook which was fitted with a pellet band… nothing complicated. Andy was fishing standard carp tactics, a small boilie popped up on a Ronnie rig, fished over a bed of particles, and it was he who struck first, landing a smashing carp which he gleefully showed me before returning it. My feeder was clad in Spotted Fin Boosted Coarse pellets, which I’d soaked for around five minutes to make them sticky, added a glug of Finamino liquid to try and encourage a bite, and within the band, a brand new Spotted Fin bait, Pink Pepper Squid, which I was trying for the first time. Usually, fish can be caught close in at this venue, indeed Andy was fishing at point blank range, and
getting bites, however in front of me, all was quiet. I was recasting every ten minutes, and each time moving the feeder five metres further out until eventually, I was fishing at about seventy metres! Thankfully, the pellets were sticky enough to withstand a decent cast, so I knew my bait would still be working correctly, and finally, after almost three hours, the tip pulled round and then fell back. I swept the rod high and connected with a feisty double figure carp which gave a good account of itself during a ten minute scrap; at least I had a fish on the board as Andy upped his tally to three. Had I been in front, we would have been having a match, but as Andy was creeping away, adding fish to his score, then obviously we weren’t in competition! Ten minutes later, the tip wrapped around again, but I lost the fish just a few seconds into the fight. Quickly recast, the feeder settled, and from then on, I managed a few more bites resulting in a total of three carp, and seven bream. Andy banked seven decent double figure carp to over 16lb, before we both packed up and headed home. As I wandered past, Andy let slip that he had baited heavily with particle before sun-up, thus avoiding the huge population of bird life, and it was over this bed of bait that he had been catching; crafty sod! I had been well schooled, but it was all good fun, just how fishing should be! The new baits had performed however, it was just a matter of finding the fish first! Keep an eye out for the new range, coming soon in 2019… My second session was to a water I’d never seen before, let alone fished! A chance encounter in a tackle shop had alerted me to a new pike water, so I quickly purchased a club book (for less than the price of a day ticket elsewhere) and headed off for the country park venue. I was the only angler in attendance, so spent a few minutes watching the cold, black waters for signs of life… nothing. I’d had very little information to go on either, so taking into account the current wind direction, where the sun would rise (and warm the water first) I opted

for a peg at one end of the lake. With no idea of depth, I fished out my Deeper ™ and spent fifteen minutes trying to find likely spots. I rarely use the fishfinder facility, preferring instead to utilise it to gauge depth, and the kind of lake bed I’m fishing over, rather than thrash the water to a foam with a marker float and lead. The lake bed proved to be fairly featureless, but I did find a couple of spots slightly deeper than the mean, and I wondered if pike could be lying within… My ‘go to’ tactics on an unknown water always include roach and smelt hookbaits, so one of each was despatched into the holes where I hoped it would be found by a hungry predator. After an hour, nothing had stirred, so both were retrieved to be checked, and moved to a slightly different spot. I’d also forgotten my single hook rig bin, so was restricted to fishing with trebles (which I don’t mind but seeing as I’ve been banging the single hook drum recently….) so both baits were firmly mounted and recast. In the distance, I espied two anglers approaching, so knowing I was new to the lake, I quickly fished out my membership card to show them. I didn’t need to. To my surprise, the first angler to reach me said “Hi Clint” and started to ask whether I‘d caught. I had to reply negatively, and he then informed me that I was in a spot from which he’d never seen pike caught! Oops! Had my assumptions been completely wrong? It was too damn cold to move, so as they moved away, I resolved to stay put, more in hope than expectation! The two anglers (I now knew one as Steve) put out floatfished baits, and I watched as they landed two pike fairly quickly. Although both were small, at least they had caught, and as I kept my eye on them, a series of bleeps drew my attention to a rapidly rising indicator! I leapt to the rods, closed the bail arm and struck, feeling a solid resistance at the other end which felt like a decent fish! It started taking line, my clutch spinning away as it moved towards the centre of the lake, and then I felt the disappointing release as the hooks came loose, and the fish was gone! Ahh! My first chance and I’d lost it! I replaced the smelt, hurled it back out into the lake, and sat back down with a brew. The other anglers eventually moved off, and after three hours
in the face of a biting wind, I couldn’t blame them, and in truth, I considered my own options as my feet were absolutely freezing! I finished my tea, and looked around wondering what to pack away first; bleep… bleep… bleep… Another chance! I dropped the indicator off the line and pinched the mono between my fingers as I felt for movement… There was definitely something there, so I closed the bail arm, waited for the line to tighten, and struck again. This time, the hooks held, and after a few minutes of hard fight, a beautifully conditioned pike came to the waiting net and was quickly freed of the trebles. A quick strike had ensured they were on the edge of the jaw, so releasing them was easy; I never leave a pike to move off with the bait for any length of time, I’d rather miss it than risk a deeply hooked fish… Leaving it resting in my cradle for a few seconds, I cleaned my hands before holding it aloft for a picture, and then released it into the margins where it swam away sulkily. I was pleased. I’d had two runs, landing one fish, from an area I’d been told might cause me an issue, but stuck at it to get a result. In bitterly cold conditions, I was happy, and quickly packed up to get back to the warmth of the van… where I found my fur-lined boots in the clothing box! I’ll be back again soon, having enjoyed the visit, but this time I’ll make sure I’ve got the right boots on, so I can concentrate! Brr!

As you will be aware we had our first taste of winter this weekend, and although the snow forecasted was absent, the cold weather still stopped a lot of the play in the County Senior League. Just five games in the end survived the windy and icy conditions.

Premier Division The big game in the Premier Division came at St George’s Park, where second bottom High Green Villa hosted bottom side Handsworth Parramore Reserves. It was the result neither side wanted in the end as the game ended in a 1-1 draw. However, the point is enough to lift High Green one place out of the bottom two. There was just one other game in the Premier Division; that was also a draw, 2-2 between Jubilee Sports and Hepworth United at Jubilee Sports Ground.
45s Division 1 Mosborough rinity beat Ring O Bells by 4-1 and Sheffield Aurora lost at home to Hallam 1860 2-0. 45s Division 2 Plough Vets lost at home to Dronfield Town , who scored through Marklew and Pitsch, and Watson for Plough. Division One There was just one game in Division One, with league leaders Ecclesfield Red Rose 1915 hosting Wombwell Main Reserves. Yet again, Ecclesfield were in fine form, running out 5-1 winners. The win takes Ecclesfield’s 100% start to 12 matches and gives them a four point cushion at the top. Division Two AFC Dronfield Reserves claimed their second win of the season, with an entertaining 3-2 home victory over United Worksop. Jordan Price (2) and George Talbot were both on target for Dronfield, whilst Patryk Zukowski socred both goals for Worksop. Third bottom Swinton Athletic Reserves were in fine form, as they beat bottom side Worsbrough Bridge Athletic Development 6-1 at Swinton Miners Welfare. The win ends a run of six games without victory for Swinton.

MOMENTUM STILL WITH US - SEMI Rotherham United defender Semi Ajayi says last weekend’s dramatic late equaliser against Reading has kept the momentum flowing through the Millers’ camp ahead of the visit of high-flying West Bromwich Albion. The Millers will host Albion for the first time at the AESSEAL New York Stadium when Darren Moore’s side make the trip to South Yorkshire on Saturday. The Millers face a stiff test from a side that was competing in the Premier League last season, but Paul Warne’s bullish side have already shown their mettle against some of the top sides The Championship has to offer. Nigerian international Ajayi has been at the cornerstone of the Millers’ success this season, and the former Arsenal ace witnessed first-hand the elation that erupted from Joe Mattock’s late equaliser last Saturday. Despite not being able to turn good performing draws into wins, Ajayi says the results and performances in recent games are giving his side momentum as Warne’s army head into the busy run of festive fixtures. “Picking up as many points from games as we can, even if we don’t win them, is important,” he told www.themillers.co.uk. “The fact that we were able to bounce back from being down and get another last minute equaliser is really good and it just keeps that momentum going and keeps confidence up ahead of the weekend. “We’ve got a really resilient team, so even if we’re not at our best we’ve got a knack of just managing to stay in a game because we know sooner or later our performances levels will pick up and we’ll come good. We managed to do that at the weekend even though we definitely weren’t at our best in the first half
WHITEMAN AND MCCANN DEDICATE SATURDAY’S WIN TO ROVERS GOALKEEPING COACH PAUL GERRARD Ben Whiteman and Grant McCann dedicated Saturday’s 3-0 victory over Scunthorpe United to Rovers goalkeeping coach Paul Gerrard whose mother recently passed away. Whiteman opened the scoring in the sixth minute and immediately ran to the dugout to celebrate. After the match, the midfielder revealed his celebration was to show support for Gerrard. “Gez has had a tough time. He’s very wellliked in the changing rooms and we all said as soon as we scored, we were going to celebrate with him. We all love him, and it meant a lot to us. We’re a very tight group and obviously when things like that do happen, it’s hard to take. We all feel it and that’s why it meant a lot

but we stayed in the game and whenever it is only 1-0 you’ve always got a chance.” The Millers have only tasted defeat once on home turf this season and have turned their AESSEAL New York Stadium base into something of a fortress this campaign and Ajayi insists he and his teammates want to preserve that record, as Premier League hopefuls West Brom come to town this weekend. “I think we’ve only lost once at home all season and that’s another big motivating factor in terms of us not wanting anyone to come to our patch and take three points off us,” he added. “The lads dug in last weekend and we managed to keep that record going.”

As soon as I scored, there was no doubt in my mind that I was going to celebrate with him and all the boys followed. When there’s that much significance on it, with what’s happened to Gez, it made it all mean a little bit more.” Manager Grant McCann added that his whole team have rallied around Gerrard throughout this difficult period and he felt the celebration highlighted the team spirit and togetherness within the dressing room. “It’s a lovely moment from the boys and I’m pleased they ran to Gez, he’s been through a difficult time with his mother passing. Last week, the result against Bristol Rovers was for him and the players have shown how much he means to us,” he added. “He’s an outstanding goalkeeping coach. He’s bringing the best out of Lawlor, Marko, and young Lewis Jones. We’re lucky to have him because if you’re going to have a successful season you need a good staff, and I’ve got a good staff here.” Get your Half Season Membership now – online at tickets.clubdoncaster.co.uk, at the Club Doncaster Box Office in person or via telephone 01302 762576.

only side to breach ‘Fortress New York’ with maximum points, Warne’s side have claimed the scalps of Derby County, Ipswich Town, Millwall and Swansea City in the first half of the season. Mattock revealed that part of the Millers’ game plan on their home turf is to ensure that their Championship opponents find it as hard as possible to settle into the AESSEAL New York Stadium surroundings, by being quick out of the blocks. With Warne’s side priding themselves on their fitness levels, Mattock insists that his side, who often employ a CHAMPIONSHIP victories may been elusive for the Millers in recent outings, but five-man midfield, have an uncanny knack of swamping their visitors from the off by giving full-back Joe Mattock insists that no-one them as little time as possible on the ball. can doubt his side’s character as they look “Our home record speaks for itself,” Mattock to drag themselves away from the lower added. reaches of the Championship table. “We are a very good home team and we know Paul Warne’s side have arguably, become the that even when we play the best teams on our division’s draw specialists after claiming a home pitch, we can outplay them. CLEAN SHEETS PLEASING FOR MCCANN AFTER SCUNTHORPE WIN Manager Grant McCann says the whole team should take credit for the defensive improvements which have seen goalkeeper Ian Lawlor keep four consecutive clean sheets. It has been more than 360 minutes since Lawlor had to pick the ball out of his net and McCann believes every player on the pitch deserves praise. “The clean sheets have come from the hard work of the front three and the midfield three who press, and the back four, and Lawlor -
every player is blocking shots and getting their heads and bodies in the way of things,” he said. “We went through that spell of three or four games where we were conceding a lot from set-plays, so we’ve changed it around. It’s a credit to my staff that we’ve sat down, identified it, and worked on it but a bigger credit goes to the group for buying into it and defending like that. They’re throwing their bodies on the line. “If you look at Bristol Rovers, they went a different way about attacking set-plays and Scunthorpe did it too. They were both trying to work short ones but we’re getting people out and blocking and I think that’s what we need to do.” The clean sheets have come despite the absence of some key Rovers players including defender Joe Wright. McCann believes the recently-formed centre-back pairing of Andy Butler and Tom Anderson has been improving game on game. “It was difficult for Anderson at the start of the season with the form of Butler and Wright. But the more he has played the more confident he has got, and he’s building a partnership now with Andy Butler,” added McCann. “It’s a credit to the team that we can be on this run without Niall Mason and Joe Wright, and without Tommy Rowe for the most part. They’re three big players for us so it’s a credit to the group that they’re sticking strong. They’re performing well and making sure that when these players come back to full fitness, they’re going to find it tough to dislodge the boys who are in the team at the minute. “The boys know that the team’s playing well so they’ve all got to keep working hard to keep their place. It’s a great conundrum for me to have.”

BOSS DEMANDING MORE Chris Wilder was left frustrated after seeing his team fail to capitalise on a positive start against West Brom on Friday evening. Chris Wilder was left frustrated after seeing his team fail to capitalise on a positive start against West Brom on Friday evening. David McGoldrick gave the Blades an early lead, only for Gareth Barry to restore parity before the break and Kieran Gibbs scored the only goal of the second period as the visitors left S2 with the spoils. Speaking in the aftermath, Wilder remarked: “We need a lift, you only have to look at our bench to see that. We need to improve the squad in certain areas, but we
should still be doing better with that group of players. “They need to play better, it’s basic football that we’ve not got right. It’s unlike us, but the mistakes and poor decisions spread quickly.
“We play in a way that pushes the opposition back, but we haven’t been good enough right the way through to really challenge a really powerful club.” Wilder added: “This style has worked for us and got us into
this position, but we need to show that bit of quality to takes games away from the opposition. “We’ll have to regroup and go again, but we didn’t hit the heights we can or give the supporters enough to shout about.”
BLADES SPREAD CHRISTMAS CHEER The Blades have been bringing the festive spirit to local hospitals, hospices and a Foodbank. Players from both the men’s and women’s first teams, as well as the football management, brought Christmas cheer to the Sheffield Children’s Hospital, Weston Park Hospital, Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice, St Luke’s Hospice and the S2 Foodbank last week when they delivered gifts and spent time chatting with patients, families as well as staff and volunteers. The gifts were funded thanks to generous donations from the players themselves, United’s vice presidents, PriceCheck UK and Blades’ sponsors HE Barnes and Shepherd Distribution. Dave McCarthy, operations director at United, said: “The players always really look forward to these visits every year, and I’m especially delighted that players from the women’s first team took part this year.” “As these organisations are our nominated charities, we work in partnership all year round with them, but the festive period is the perfect opportunity for the club to conduct these visits and try and make a big difference for all our fans in hospitals, hospices or those
needing support. We’ve seen the fantastic work these organisations do first-hand, so we were honoured to once again visit and wish everyone a Merry Christmas.” At the Children’s Hospital, skipper Billy Sharp, John Fleck, John Egan, Leon Clarke and Dean Henderson were joined by first team physio Paul Watson, club doctor Alex Worthington and women’s player Sam Tierney. Those visiting Weston Park included Chris Wilder, Simon Moore, George Baldock, Jake Eastwood, Jack O’Connell, along with Ellie Gillatt, Sophie Jones and SUFC vice president Martin Ross. St Luke’s enjoyed the company of Daniel Lafferty, Ollie Norwood, Richard Stearman, Kean Bryan, John Lundstram, first team coach Matt Prestridge and from the women’s squad, Nat Shaw and Hollie Barker. Vice presidents Mike Blundell and long-time supporter of St Luke’s, Tajinder Singh, also went along. Attending Bluebell Wood Hospice were Jake Wright, Enda Stevens, Marvin Johnson, David McGoldrick, Kieron Freeman, Bex Rayner and Thea Paul, along with goalkeeper coach Darren Ward. Finally, the S2 Foodbank were delighted to be able to show Conor Washington, Martin Cranie and Alan Knill around, along with Carla Ward, Lois Daniels, Dave McCarthy and vice president Steve Naylor, all appreciating the hard work that the most local Foodbank to Bramall Lane delivers.

It was the away side that started the game the strongest, Max Sheaf’s deflected shot flying wide of the post. But Hull’s next chance was far from squandered, as Fleming darted towards the Wednesday box before unleashing a fierce strike that rattled the woodwork before hitting the net for 1-0. Former Derby striker Chris Martin came close to doubling the Tigers’ lead but the forward fired wide. Wednesday thought they had equalised when Boyd’s low cross was converted by Omar Damba but the linesman flagged for offside. The Owls kept pushing as half time approached and got their reward Boyd again creating the chance as he controlled well from a corner before sliding the ball across goal and defender O’Grady tapped home to equalise. The Owls kept pushing to put the score beyond doubt and from Joe West’s perfect cross Damba headed home but the striker was ruled offside for the second time. Damba completed an unwanted hat-trick when Boyd’s long distance effort came off the post, leading to an easy tap-in for the striker who was in the right place again but was deemed offside for the third time. There was still one more chance for Wednesday to strike a final blow but substitute Preslav Borukov struck over from O’Grady’s knockdown.
