HUGE BOOST FOR TOURISM WITH ANNOUNCEMENT OF £7M FUNDING FOR REGION Funding of almost £7m has been agreed for three major projects, set to bring in tourists and boost the Sheffield City Region’s cultural economy. At a Mayoral Combined Authority (MCA) meeting, chaired by Mayor Dan Jarvis and held in Rotherham last month members agreed Local Growth Fund (LGF) money for the schemes in Rotherham and Doncaster. Funding of £5m was approved for the Yorkshire Wildlife Park, while packages of £1.5m and £0.4m were also agreed for Gullivers Valley and
the Vulcan to the Sky projects respectively. Mayor Jarvis said: “I said I would promote the Sheffield City Region’s cultural and tourism offer as Mayor, and working with the Local Enterprise Partnership, I’m getting on with the job. It’s great to be able to fund such a diverse range of projects, which will create new jobs, boost our visitor economy and complement the existing range of fantastic arts, culture and heritage sites we have here in our region. “Not only do cultural attractions enrich our quality of life, but
they act as a driver for economic growth. By working together, we can be more than the sum of our parts. “With a growing number of major visitor attractions we must now do more to promote them. That’s why I set up a meeting for local authorities, the Mayoral Combined Authority and Welcome to Yorkshire last month, to explore how we can come together across the region to sell our exceptional offer across the North, the UK and internationally.” Sir Nigel Knowles, chair of the Sheffield City
Region Local Enterprise Partnership, said: “Funding these transformative schemes is a great example of how the public and private sector work together in the SCR to get things done. “Our ability to work collaboratively, in a straightforward and practical way, is one of the real drivers for growing investor confidence in our region.” The funding agreed yesterday will enable a significant expansion of the popular Yorkshire Wildlife Park in Doncaster, which will add an additional 150 acres to the current site. The
extension will provide a new entrance, expanded car parking, many new animal reserves and a large lake. There will be also a visitor hub incorporating a 148-bedroom hotel, an events and conference venue, restaurants and shops, creating more than 230 additional full time-equivalent jobs. The Yorkshire Wildlife Park opened in April 2009 and currently attracts around 750,000 visitors each year. It aims to grow to 1.2m visitors by 2022, which will put it in the top four zoos and wildlife parks in the country.
Steve Minion, Chairman of the Wild Life Group, said: “ The rapid growth of Yorkshire Wildlife Park and the support we have had from South Yorkshire confirmed to us that there was the potential for a gamechanging project in Doncaster. “However, turning ‘the dream’ into reality was never going to be easy and it has taken two years of intensive activity to get to this point. “We are grateful to many partners for their help and assistance, and in particular the SCR who are providing vital support. The development will both create jobs and economic benefits to the region as well as helping add to the tourism offer in Doncaster.”
Funding for the Gullivers Valley project, meanwhile, contribute £1.5m towards the £7.5m cost of the whole project. the theme park, earmarked for the Pithouse West site in Rotherham, will offer rides and attractions aimed at children aged from two to 13. It will also include a water play zone, a climbing zone and an ecology centre encompassing forest classrooms and outdoor learning. The resort will also offer family-friendly accommodation in the form of “glamping”, woodland lodges, and hotels. The project is anticipated to bring £37m in private sector investment to the City Region and create around 250 new jobs. Julie Dalton from Gul-
livers Fun said: “This year we celebrated our 40th year in business, operating family theme park resorts in Matlock, Warrington and Milton Keynes. We are still family owned and our new site at Rother Valley will bring together all the best bits of all our other resorts, including many new and exciting attractions. “As a family we are very excited to be developing in the Sheffield City Region. This funding will allow us to bring forward a number of elements of the resort that would have not been built until later phases, creating a more exciting resort for our guests to experience and more jobs for local residents.”

LET’S WORK TOGETHER TO GET THESE HISTORIC HERITAGE BUILDINGS OFF OUR LIST That’s the message from Sheffield City Council which has launched its Heritage 20 by 20 campaign. The council has drawn up a list of 20 privatelyowned listed buildings which it hopes to get off the list by next year and back into use, either as housing or in alternative uses. An abandoned church that served the former Wadsley Asylum and a pub that was built in the 1750s and survived two Sheffield floods are both on the list. Although some buildings
on the list, such as the Farfield Inn on Neepsend, have been sold, planners are still waiting for building to start to get them off the list. Others, such as Middlewood Church in Wadsley or the former Loxley Chapel on Loxley Road, have been abandoned for years – suffering fires and other damage. Planners at Sheffield City Council say they hope that releasing the list will spark new interest in the buildings. Successful conversions could create up to 300 homes across
the city, although other uses will always be considered too. Councillor Jack Scott, cabinet member for development at Sheffield City Council, said: “We don’t want to name and shame owners – but we want 2019 to be the year when we ask that they work with us to get these buildings back into use. “If done correctly, these buildings could provide more than 300 new homes across the city. In some cases, we understand that plans are forthcoming – but we need to hear from
developers to get them off our list. We are no different from other major cities in having a number of buildings at risk but our register has gone down from around 60 three years ago to around 30 now – and we’ve identified 20 that we want to get off our books and back into use.” Zoe Mair, conservation officer at Sheffield City Council, added: “Many of these buildings have a rich place in Sheffield history with links to industry, the former church for Wadsley Asylum and the final

resting place for Sheffield flood victims. We have a proven record of success in restoring derelict buildings as a glance at our list of a few years ago would demonstrate. “In the last few years we have helped to develop the former post office headquarters as Sheffield Institute of Arts, Ebenezer Chapel as private houses and Jaywing as a private business. “We also know that there are other buildings which require heavy investment and support to get them back into use.”

Multiplatinum superstar Ariana Grande expands her upcoming The Sweetener World Tour into Europe. 21 arena shows have been announced across Europe, including a stop at Sheffield’s FlyDSA Arena on Thursday 19th September 2019. Tickets, priced £50.40 - £106.40 (including booking fee) are on general sale now and will be available online at www.flydsaarena.co.uk or by phone on 0114 256 5656. Produced by Live Nation, The Sweetener World Tour kicks off March 18 in Albany, New York and will cross North America through June, before heading across the Atlantic beginning in London on August 19, culminating in Zurich on October 13. 2018 marks yet another historic year for GRANDE. She concluded a banner twelve months with the distinction of being named Billboard’s “Woman of the Year” and receiving a pair of GRAMMY® Award nominations in the categories of “Best Pop Vocal Album” for her latest album Sweetener and “Best Pop Solo Performance” for “God Is A Woman.” Simultaneously, her recent single “thank u, next” bowed at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and smashed the record for “Most Spotify Streams for a Song By A Female Artist in a Single Week.” With her powerful vocals and astonishing range, Ariana Grande has emerged as one of the most magnetic and massively successful performers in pop music today. At age 25 she’s delivered three platinum-selling albums and surpassed 18 billion streams, in addition to nabbing four Grammy Award nominations and landing eight hits in the Top 10 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. With 2016’s critically acclaimed Dangerous Woman, Grande both boldly defies expectation and reveals the full force of her voice (recently hailed as an “extraordinary, versatile, limitless instrument” upon Grande’s appearance on Time’s “100 Most Influential People” list). Since making her full-length debut with 2013’s Yours Truly (featuring the game-changing, triple-platinum smash “The Way”), Grande has brought her striking vocal presence to a genre-blurring breed of pop, taking on R&B, soul, and electronic music with equal nuance and assurance. Arriving in 2014, her sophomore effort, My Everything, garnered a Grammy Award nomination for Best Pop Vocal Album and spawned the 6x-platinum hits “Problem” and “Bang Bang” (a Grammy nominee
for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance). Grande embraced a more uncompromising vision than ever before in the making of Dangerous Woman. With People noting that the album “celebrates feminine might,” Entertainment Weekly praised Grande for “having something meaningful to say with that jaw-dropping voice — one of the most exquisite in pop today.” Grande wrapped up her widely lauded Dangerous Woman Tour in support of the album last year, performing 85 arena shows worldwide. Through the years, the longtime actress and former Broadway star has proven the scope of her talent by appearing on Scream Queens and Hairspray Live! and showcased her comedic chops by hosting Saturday Night Live. With her social media following now surging past 200 million, Grande has also earned numerous accolades from the MTV Video Music Awards, iHeartRadio Music Awards, and American Music Awards (including the highly coveted Artist of the Year prize). Ariana’s recent single “No Tears Left To Cry” debuted at #1 on iTunes in 88 countries worldwide and began the next era for her upcoming fourth full length studio album Sweetener. With the release of “Not Tears Left To Cry” she became the first artist in music history to see the lead single from her first four albums debut on the Top 10 on Billboard Hot 100. This year she has graced the prestigious magazine covers of TIME’s Next Generation Leaders, FADER, and British Vogue. The highly anticipated album, Sweetener, was released in August 2018 and debuted at #1 on the Billboard 200 Album chart.

TEN TOP TIPS FOR A HAPPY NEW YEAR Too many resolutions are hard work and, let’s face it, you’re never going to stick to them if there’s too much effort involved. So says happiness doctor Andy Cope, who has spent 10 years researching positive psychology and delivers courses, centring on themes of happiness, in businesses and schools across the world. Minute changes which you can realistically stick to will make the difference, he says. “Small habit changes are like compound interest. They add up. For example, let’s imagine that instead of salad you sneak a burger. On that day, there is no difference. You won’t notice it in the mirror. But in 12 months, the habit of salad after salad after salad will have made a compound and noticeable difference (as will burger after burger after burger).”Cope, whose book Happiness: Your Route Map To Inner Joy, is now out in paperback, offers 10 realistic resolutions to make 2019 your best year to date… 1. Commit to doing some exercise Don’t kill yourself. Thirty minutes a day is fine. It might feel like a chore at first, but it releases all sorts of lovely chemicals which will infuse you with a Ready Brek glow. It doesn’t have to cost anything. A brisk walk at lunchtime is fine. 2. Make time to sleep Commit to getting your full eight hours of shut-eye. A University of Warwick study calculates that good sleep is worth £200,000 to your wellbeing. So treat yourself to a lottery win. 3. Develop good eating habits Live by the Japanese concept of Hara Hachi Bu. It means stop eating just before you’re full. It’s the smallest change of habit that will have the biggest impact. And there are additional dos and don’ts for eating properly: • Do sit down and eat as a family (as often as possible). If it’s not happening, insist that it does. • Do appreciate your food. That means savouring it and thanking whoever provided it. That might be God but, more likely, Tesco Extra. • Don’t eat anything delivered to your door by someone on a motorbike. • Don’t eat anything passed to you in your
car through a hatch. • Don’t eat fast food more than once a week. And eat it slowly. • Don’t eat anything your great grandma would not have recognised as food. 4. Celebrate stuff that didn’t happen Sadly, unless you’re a black belt happiness ninja, your mind doesn’t sit in traffic thinking how lucky you are to have a car. It curses at the long meeting instead of rejoicing that you have a job. It tuts at the crumbs on the worktop instead of being grateful you’ve got wonderful children. The opposite of savouring good experiences is to notice the many things that could have gone badly, but didn’t. Hence the mind-bending question, what hasn’t happened, that you didn’t want, that you haven’t celebrated? I woke up and didn’t have toothache. I got to work without crashing my car. I haven’t got diabetes. My children aren’t poorly. I haven’t just stubbed my toe… Of course, it’s hard to notice something that didn’t happen. Have a go, it’s fabulous fun. In fact, it’s one of those mental muscles that gets stronger the more you exercise it. 5. Savour the f-word Make 2019 the year of the f-word. The word? Failure. Dirty, rotten, despicable failure. Not failure the result: Losing the business, losing the relationship, failing the interview. But failure the process: Learning, improving, becoming fightingfit, installing effectiveness, broadening, widening, gaining wisdom, picking yourself up and smiling and trying once again. Failure, yes. But stay in the game. If we’re unwilling to fail, we’re unwilling to succeed. 6. Celebrate your plot twists You are a storyteller. Stories link us to our ancestors and to those who don’t yet exist. And don’t we just love a tragedy? If you’re not careful, problems loom large and they can dominate your back story. They become well-rehearsed tales, magnified and re-lived every time you tell them. It’s easy to become the victim. Bad things always happen to you, right?
But, of course, you’re the author. It’s your life and your story. You might not be able to change the events that have happened, but you can re-cast yourself as the hero. So, when something doesn’t go according to plan, it’s not a nightmare, crisis, challenge or problem, it’s merely a plot twist. All good stories have a plot twist, an unexpected turn of events that nobody saw coming. Your life is a story. Plot twists are inevitable. They exist because you’re alive. 7. Get huggy The average hug lasts 2.1 seconds. However, for the love to transfer, a hug has to last seven seconds or longer. There will be about 12 people in your life who are emotionally close enough to warrant a seven-second hug. So hug your 12 and hang on for the full seven seconds. Hugging releases feelgood chemicals and when you feel great, life gets a whole lot easier. Two notes of caution: This is not for strangers in the park, and don’t count out loud, it spoils the effect. 8. Enjoy more moments Write a list of the top 10 happiest moments of your life. The general rule is that happiness comes from doing stuff, rather than accumulating stuff. You’ll realise that most of the things on your list are ‘experiences’ rather than ‘products’. In 2019, set your stall out to have more experiences. 9. Make Monday the new Friday Here’s a terrifying fact – a seventh of your 2019 is going to consist of Mondays. That’s too much time to simply write off. So dare to stand out by celebrating Mondays. If you think about it, Friday’s a nightmare, another week closer to death. Mondays are a chance to get stuck into a new week and make a dent in the universe. 10. Cut down on anti-social media Cut your tech time by a third. We’re not saying you should cease screen time, merely that you will glean more happiness from real people, real relationships, fresh air, views and actual eye contact.
Although it can sound morbid, you will hear many people claim ‘well, I can’t take it with me’ when gifting money and other assets. However, giving money and assets away is harder than first assumed and there are some legal pitfalls. Money, property and possessions all count as gifts. However, anything, where there is a loss in value of an item, is also considered a gift. Therefore, selling your car or property for less that it’s worth as a way of helping a friend or family out would be considered a gift. Gifts under £250 You can give as many gifts under £250 as you like within a tax year. These gifts may be physical items or cash. Inheritance Tax If you gift more than £325,000 in the seven years leading up to your passing, the recipient will be charged Inheritance Tax. The tax charge will sit on a sliding scale, known as a taper relief.
Years between gift and death Tax charge < 3 years 40% 3 to 4 years 32% 4 to 5 years 24% 5 to 6 years 16% 6 to 7 years 8% > 7+ years 0% Exempted gifts There is a £3,000 limit on the cash amount of gifts you can give each tax year without them being added to the value of your estate. This limit is £3,000 and is often referred to as your annual exemption. You can carry any remaining annual exemption forward to the next year. Along with you the £3,000 limit you can also give away the follow (tax free) every year: • £1,000 in wedding gifts per individual • £2,500 for a grandchild • £5,000 for a great-grandchild • Normal gifts out of your income • Gifts to charities and political parties
• Payments to help with another person’s living costs The values and gifts above are as well as the £3,000 tax exemption limit. The downsides to gifting assets Whilst gifting cash, property and other assets to your loved ones is an incredibly kind gesture, be careful to avoid any of the following pitfalls: • Gifting an asset is permanent and you cannot go back on it. • You may lose financial security giving away large assets that you may have needed to use in the future. • Reducing assets could leave you financially vulnerable and limit your future choices. • Situations and relationships change so make sure you are 100% about the gift and the individual. • If you or the person you have gifted makes a profit from a gifted asset you could be liable for Capital Gains Tax.

Wedding Guide
SPEECH WRITING TIPS Be the next Winston Churchill and keep the crowds enthralled with a witty, spellbinding wedding speech. We’ve all witnessed poorly delivered wedding speeches with cringeworthy or poorly judged and crass humour, and for just that reason, the average groom’s wedding
day is often slightly marred by the sense of fear and dread involved in standing up in front of family and friends, plus those of his new wife and embarrassing ones self. That’s why we asked Lawrence Bernstein for his advice on writing and delivering a great speech – one that’s funny,
relaxed yet enjoyable for the groom as well as his audience. Read on to discover our top speech writing tips! “Every speech requires different delivery.” Says Lawrence. “And every speaker has a different style. A great speech means thinking about exactly what you want to say, how you want to say it and who you’re speaking to.” Lawrence warns against using generic wedding gags or prewritten speeches, insisting that each speech should be exclusive, Lawrence First, break down each element of your

speech – introduction, compliment the bride, thank bridesmaids’ and present their gifts etc. Once that’s achieved, you can construct each element and write phrases - not than the whole speech, onto cue cards so you can maintain eye-contact with the audience without struggling to find your place when you look back to your prompts. Large text written on cue cards will also prevent your wedding speech succumbing to the shakes if you’re nervous when performing it. “You’ll be more natural when you’re not reading straight off a page.” Says Lawrence, who has appeared on national radio giving his opinion world famous public speeches and coached Stephen Fry. “Practice reading it and take your wedding speech slowly – if your speech
takes 12 minutes, not nine, it doesn’t matter at all.” Other tips for natural delivery include emphasising key words – again, easier when reading from cue cards rather than a speech written out in full from an A4 sheet – and the use of gesticulations and changes of inflections to add relaxation and
‘normality’ into your delivery. Finally, don’t get drunk beforehand – Dutch courage can be counterproductive if it affects your delivery - or be put off by heckles; “You can pre-prepare a couple of witty responses to heckles in advance.” Lawrence advises.

FLYDSDA ARENA Review of 2018 and a look forward to an exciting 2019 & beyond…. 2018 was the Arena’s 27th year in showbiz and yet again it was another memorable season both on & off the stage! Behind the scenes the Arena has seen a significant investment in the venue’s digital media infrastructure enhancing the customer experience whether they are a hockey fan, a gig goer or a business delegate. The Arena now has free public access Wi-Fi capable of coping with 13,600 fans online at the same time. The new SIVLive App allows customers to order & pre-pay merchandise along with food & drink that can also be collected from fast-track dedicated pick-up. The venue’s concourse areas have also been upgraded with the installation of high spec digital signage that will give us the ability to live stream events taking place in the hall to the concourse audience. 2018 also saw the Sheffield Steelers & SIV enter into a 5 year partnership, the longest deal in the 27 year history of Steelers playing out of the Arena and was the first full year of the naming rights partnership with Doncaster Sheffield Airport. On the stage highlights from this year saw sell out shows from Sheffield’s finest bands including the Arctic Monkeys who played to packed out out crowds with 4 shows back in September. synth-pop trio The Human League and rock legends Def Leppard brought the house down in December! Other sell-out gigs came from the likes of Sam Smith who opened his first ever world tour right here in Sheffield, Katy Perry, The Vamps and the hilarious Michael McIntyre who made his 10th visit to the venue. Lots of sporting action at the venue in 2018 that was
kicked off, as is now tradition, with the first event of 2018, World’s No.1 Indoor Motorcycle Trial that featured the world’s best riders competing in Sheffield for The Martin Lampkin Trial. Other sporting events saw Kell Brook headline & win two Championship Boxing cards and Premier League darts playing infront of over 6,000 fans for the 12th consecutive year in April. Eight of the country’s strongest men did battle at the Arena in the inagural Britian’s Strongest Man competition and there was the return of the Arenacross that sees the biggest transformation of the venue with hundreds of tons of soil layed on the venue ice to create indoor dirt racing track that produced some seat grabbing entertainment from the worlds craziest indoor Motocross racers and Freestyle MX stars. The Arena also hosted a number of family shows in 2018 including WWE Live along with the Arena’s most regular touring show Disney On Ice where Mickey Mouse & Walt Disney had a 90 year celebration in the venue! WALKING WITH DINOSAURS The Arena Spectacular, made it’s final tour of Arena’s with the greatest creatures ever to walk the earth returning for one last time. This was followed by a week long performance of Cirque du Soleil’s brand new Tour OVO featuring a cast of 50 performing artists from 17 countries. Fast Live Productions brought the ground breaking Fast & Furious Live Arena Tour, which brought us all the action and excitement from one of the most popular and enduring film series to life. The inspirational Professor Noel Fitzpatrick, The Supervet, hosted his first ever live stage show and Torvill & Dean’s Dancing On Ice Live Tour returned to TV screens & a Live Arena tour. Professor Brian Cox took us on a breathtaking journey to edge of our current understanding about the origin and evolution of the Universe and landed a Guinness World Record for the best-selling science tour with another live show which will see him return to the Arena in 2019! So, into 2019 and returning to the venue are the following sporting events, The World’s Number 1 Motorcycle Trial, the first event of 2019, Britain’s Strongest Man competition for it’s second year and
13th consective year of Premier League Darts and Arenacross, with the Indoor Motorcycle dirt bike racing & Freestyle Motorcross, will be taking place over 2 nights and include the final of this years competition in Sheffield. Concerts that are already confirmed include The 1975, X Factor Live Tour, Bryan Adams, George Ezra, 4 nights of Take That on their 30th Anniversary Tour, Mumford & Sons, Olly Murs, 2 nights of Westlife on their 20th Anniversary Tour, 2 Little Mix shows and the first ever appearance at the venue of one of worlds biggest artistes Ariana Grande. Family shows, Strictly Come Dancing Live Tour, The Blue Planet II Live In Concert, Harlem Globetrotters, WWE Live Tour, Sheffield Film & Comic Con, Yorkshire Cosplay Con and a week long run of Marvel Live featuring Marvel’s greatest Super Heroes doing battle in cutting-edge special effects, aerial stunts and video projection in this incredible adventure. A first for the Arena in 2019 will sees the venue hosting The Wool Monty a two day celebration of all things yarn that will see the Arena transformed into an oasis for UK yarn lovers plus Elite Promotions are bringing four shows to the Arena next year - The Drifters who will be performing all their classic hits from the last six decades and 3 tribute acts Elvis, Tina Turner & George Michael.
Comedy action already confirmed includes Bill Bailey, Russell Howard and 4 Mrs Brown’s Boys D’Musical shows. Reviewing the year Head of SIVLive Dominic Stokes said”This year the aim was very simple. We have set out to put the FlyDSA Arena front and centre in our customers, clients, partners, event promoters and organisers minds. This venue’s history and heritage in delivering major sensational spectacles for Sheffield must be celebrated. And we continue to do so day after day. Over the past couple of years we have hosted nearly 75% of the biggest acts and productions that have toured the UK at the venue. Our relationship with the UKs most successful ice hockey club goes from strength to strength and together we will deliver success on and off the ice together. Next year the phenomenal line-up of top-flight events just keep on coming and I have set the ambition of getting a million people through our doors. The partnership with DSA has grown and developed over the past year and is the perfect synergy. We are a major inward tourism attraction in this region for domestic and international business and leisure clients and who better to facilitate and ensure our customers can get to and from the region than an airport like DSA”.

ANGLER’S CORNER
with Clint Walker
Happy New Year! Wow, 2018 seemed to go by in a rush didn’t it? I finished off my angling year with a couple of fruitless pike sessions, a ‘wasping’ trip with dropshot kit, and then had a few hours on the canal fishing for roach, which was somewhat more successful. I’ve just got back in from my first trip of the new year, so I’m straight back into it after the festive period. I hope you had a great Christmas, and have plans for this year, because I certainly do! I seem to start every season full of good intentions, with concrete plans to do this and that, catch here and there, but they rarely seem to come to fruition. I did set myself a goal of catching some canal zander last year which I achieved, but this year, I haven’t a clue. I’d like to do more river pike angling, but I’m fortunate that within just a few miles of my home, I have plenty of great spots to do other kinds of fishing, so I’m guessing it may not happen if I have to travel too far, but I hope I can find the time… I have got much more time to go fishing now after the sad demise of the magazine Carp Talk, for whom I wrote weekly columns for over nine years. It was time consuming though, with at least two days per week allocated to compiling my reports, editing images and checking facts before publication, and I intend to make good use of the extra hours and see what I can catch! So, today I’ve been on the River Trent, a free spot just twenty miles from home. It’s a short stretch with only a handful of fishable swims, but I wanted to return to a spot where I got smashed up by a chub at the tail end of last year to see if I could make amends. I wasn’t too hopeful however, the river was
THE SHEFFIELD ICE HOCKEY CLASSIC CANADA V USA After the fifth successful season of hosting The Ice Hockey Classic in Australia, StopConcussions has been looking for bigger & better events around the world. Following enormous success over the years, the promoter has been exploring other parts of the world to host The Ice Hockey Classic. Kevin Noble, a four-time participant in the Australian Classic, contacted the organisation in September 2018 and suggested Sheffield, England. After visiting the city and touring the Sheffield Fly DSA Arena the promoter quickly realised that the venue and the City was the best option to expand their event to. Not only because of the world class ice hockey facilities but a very strong history and ice hockey market. The Ice Hockey Classic is designed to help grow the game and support important causes related to our sport featuring two ice hockey giants Canada and USA. The teams will consist of players from the National Hockey League, American Hockey League, East Coast Hockey league and stars of the local professional league, the EIHL. Tim Stapleton will once again Captain the USA team, winners of the Australian Ice Hockey Classic in 2018. Stapleton played in the NHL for the Toronto Maple Leafs, Atlanta Thrashers, and Winnipeg Jets along with several European teams throughout his professional career. He also played three times for Team USA in the Ice Hockey World Championships and won a bronze medal in 2013. Also confirmed is Kyle Quincey who played 586 games in the NHL for Colorado Avalanche, Detroit Red Wings, New Jersey Devils, Los Angeles Kings and Minnesota Wild. He is presently in Finland for HIFK and is a two-time participant with the Ice Hockey Classic. Local players will named in the New Year but to give you a flavour here are some of the players that have previously stared in this fixture include such NHL’ers as Brent Burns, Scott Darling, Ben Scrivens, Adam Cracknell, Bryce Salvador, John Scott,
still low and clear, and with high air pressure maintaining a steady presence over the country, it wasn’t ideal for chub fishing, but I was never going to catch any by sitting at home. I took a twelve foot float rod, tackled up with a 3000 series reel loaded with 5lb line, and slipped on a stick float, which was shotted down with six no.4 to leave the bright yellow tip perfectly cocked. At the sharp end, a size 16 hook was tied to a 4lb hooklink, and I added a pair of maggots to see what happened. I’d selected the swim initially due to a large area of slack water against the far bank, which was undercut to offer a perfect lie for chub as the current circulated food past; all they had to do was nip out from under the bank, grab a snack, and retreat to safety! A pinch of maggots preceded the cast, and the float was dropped right amongst them to trot through the swim as my hook bait sank at a similar rate to the freebies… After an hour of feeding and casting, I hadn’t had a bite despite changing the depth, the shotting pattern, and the hookbaits, failing to gain any interest on worm, maggot or bread. It was tricky to get the float in exactly the right place due to an overhanging tree, but eventually, my persistence paid off when the float slipped away, and the strike was met with solid resistance. The chub instantly dived for the nearest cover (they know the swim better than I do!) but was carefully steered away towards the waiting net. At about 2lb, it wasn’t the biggest fish, but it was my first of 2019, and I was very pleased! As I continued my session, an angler approached; he had been fishing with lures downstream of my peg, targeting a deep dark hole, and had been royally busted by a big chub which he thought may have weighed more than 5lb… not once, but twice in two casts! After a pleasant few minutes discussing the merits of this stretch Scott Hannan, David Booth, Zenon Konopka, Ryan Wilson, Eric Condra, Taylor Beck, Emerson Etem, Ian Cole, and Matt Kassian. Team coaches have been Wayne Gretzky, Keith and Wayne Primeau, Darryl Sittler, Dave “Tiger” Williams, Dave Hanson and John Ogrodnick. Once next seasons teams & players are drafted a full roster of NHL players will be confirmed. As the tour has helped grow the game in other parts of the world and most importantly supported very good causes along the way such as stopconcussions Foundation, Brain Injury Australia and both Ice Hockey Australia and the New Zealand Ice Hockey Federation. This year we will once again support StopConcussions Foundation and a local charity Puck Aid. StopConcussions is a globally non-profit organization that provides an educational portal that players, parents, coaches, and officials can visit to seek information regarding concussions, with the goal of becoming more aware and ultimately safer individuals in their respective sports. StopConcussions has created four pillars; Education and awareness, Prevention, Management, and Research. StopConcussions has sport specific programs to help change the mindset of the sport, not the game. Puck Aid is our other cause that we will be supporting from this inaugural event. Puck Aid was founded by former BBC Sports Personality of the Year (Unsung hero) Lance Haggith, the Sports Trader charity raises funds to give disadvantaged persons with the equipment and support they need to discover and fulfil their sporting ambition and potential, whatever their background, ability or disability. The Sheffield Ice Hockey Classic CANADA v USA will take place at the FlyDSA Arena on Saturday 20th April 2019. Tickets will go on general sale 9am on Monday 4th February 2019, priced £22.40 & £16.80 adults & Under 12’s £11.25 & £8.40 (including booking fee) & will be available online from www.flydsaarena. co.uk or the ticket hotline on 0114 256 56 56. There will be Canada and USA merchandise available at the game plus silent and live auctions with NHL autographed items. Sponsorship, meet and greet and VIP packages with more information and players to be announced over the coming weeks and months.

of river, we bid each other farewell, but it’s certainly got me thinking about the potential for chevins in this neglected, often overlooked, tiny stream… Throughout the next couple of hours, I had several more chub of similar size, smaller dace, and missed a lot of bites which were probably roach which I could see flitting in and out of the main current. Eventually, the cold drizzle began to swirl under the brolly, making it very damp and unpleasant, so I decided to pack up and head back to the van before walking the adjacent canal to check out some likely spots. I’d had fun (which is what its about) and got 2019 off to a good start, so I retired happy… The idea of big chub in that one particular spot intrigues me though, so I think I may have to return with a beefed up lure kit, and try to winkle one out! I’m led to believe that big perch are present too, along with big pike, so it may well be my next session…we’ll have to see. I’ll finish this week by wishing you all the very best for 2019,
SPEEDWAY TV TOUR DUO IN TOWN Kelvin Tatum and Nigel Pearson, the voices of speedway, are to visit Sheffield with their winter tour for the first time later this month. A special evening with the commentators will take place in the Panorama Room at Owlerton on Wednesday January 30 (8pm). ‘Tatum and Pearson Live’ hits the road for a sixth straight winter with four dates throughout the country in the build-up to the new season. Tigers co-promoter Damien Bates said: “We’re pleased to welcome the lads here, they’ve got some pretty good stories to tell and from what I’m told an evening with them is very enjoyable. “Kelvin was a top rider and he has some
and just as importantly, thank you for reading this column each week throughout 2018. I’ve had some great questions throughout the year, some easy to answer, some more taxing, but I appreciate them all and really appreciate the feedback; thank you.

It’s a nice way to build up to the new season and I’m looking forward to seeing plenty of Sheffield fans there.” Tatum said: “Nigel and I like to have some fun on nights like these and we are both looking forward to Sheffield. “I talk about the day I got my MBE from the Queen, plus my experiences with the likes of the late, great Kenny Carter and Simon Wigg. “We also have some banter about our time on tour going to the Grand Prix and some of the people we have come across, plus give an insight into how a live TV broadcast works. “I’m looking forward to a great night at Sheffield, I have a lot of time for the management there.” Tickets cost £10 and are available online from sportstalkevents.co.uk/bookingoffice now.

IT’S A VITAL THREE POINTS - BARKER
Rotherham United assistant boss Richie Barker praised his patched-up Millers as they got off to a winning start in 2019 after a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Preston North End at the AESSEAL New York Stadium. With several first-team players injured and suspended, Rotherham still put in a tremendous second-half display to secure all three points thanks to goals from Will Vaulks and Michael Smith. “Well, it’s a vital three points,” said Barker. “It’s important for us. It lifts us out of the bottom three and, the longer it goes on, people start talking about bad runs of form. “It wasn’t the best game – certainly not the best performance but, second-half, far better. We changed a few things at half-time and made a couple of substitutions. It definitely got better and fair play to the players off the back of a really tough seven to 10 days, they’ve come up with the points. “The winning feeling’s important. The league table, which we’ve now got to spend two weeks looking at, looks a lot better than it did three hours ago. But just to give the players a lift and that belief that we can get the three points. “We’ll keep making this place a difficult place to come and we’ll keep the players motivated and as organised as we can and we’ll see where we get.” The Millers went in at the break a goal to the good after an absolute thunderbolt from Will Vaulks despite an out-of-character first-half display. “It wasn’t one of our greatest 45 minutes,” he continued. “Teams will always create chances
FIVE STAR ROVERS SEE OFF ROCHDALE Rovers kicked off the new year with a fivestar performance to move back into the play-off positions. A frantic first-half saw Rovers take the lead with little over 40 seconds played, scoring the first goal of 2019 in Sky Bet League One, and that set the tone for the afternoon as the home side cruised to victory. Rovers opened bright as Mallik Wilks - fresh from agreeing to extend his loan spell received the ball on the right-hand side and floated in a brilliantly-weighted cross into the area, towards Alfie May who was all alone at the back post. He was as equally impressive with his finish as the cross from Wilks, with his cushioned header looped into the net in the opposite corner. Wilks would be at it again just 90 seconds later with another cross from the right this time finding John Marquis six yards out from goal, only for the striker to see his header saved superbly by Magnus Norman. Norman would be a busy man in the Dale goal, with the stopper having to be alert to ambitious attempts from both the goal-scorer May and Ben Whiteman. Wilks would have a chance of his own as he once again got the better of his man down the right, with the forward getting past Kgosi Ntlhe before shooting for the near post, looking to catch Norman out, but the Dale goalkeeper was alert to the danger. Norman was not able to get anywhere near Rovers’ next real attempt on goal, with Ali

against you. You could argue if Preston had been more ruthless, we would have found it more difficult to come back into the game. They’re a very resilient group and we talk to them all the time about staying in the game and, fortunately, Will managed to put that free-kick in. It just meant that we had a bit of breathing space and we could change things. “It’s a really tough time for the players who have had one day off in two weeks which, over Christmas, is difficult. There’s a few players running on empty and a few who haven’t played for a while. “We knew we had to change things at halftime and that was irrelevant whether Will had scored the free-kick or not.” A super second from Michael Smith sealed the victory which takes the Millers out of the bottom three and Barker stressed the importance of the entire squad with 20 games to go in the league. “We’ve just said to them in there that every player is going to be vital, whether you’re starting or coming on as a sub,” he added. “We’re going to have to have a couple of days now where, we’ve got illness all over the place, we’re really struggling with injures, and we need to keep them away from each other because the illness is spreading quite quickly.”

Now Showing Come and Enjoy All The Footy on HDTV GOOD LUCK TO THE MILLERS!!! Crawford keeping up his own personal goal of the season competition with another stunner. He stepped to curl a free-kick into the far corner from the tightest of angles to double Rovers’ lead with the first half just reaching the half-way point. Both Crawford and Andy Butler next came close to extending the lead further, with Crawford seeing Norman at full stretch to deny him from another free-kick, before Butler flashed a header wide from the resulting corner. The third goal would arrive from another set-piece routine on 34 minutes, with Andrew playing a short free-kick to Marquis who inturn laid the ball off to Whiteman. He crossed into the area from the left-hand side of the box and there was Marquis to power home a header into the corner and give Rovers a three-goal lead at the interval. After the break, the intensity died off, with the first real opportunity of the second period coming on 73 minutes as Crawford looked to catch Norman off his line with a neatly chipped effort, but he was unable to keep the ball below the bar. Rovers did get a fourth goal, albeit via a huge helping hand from Dale stopper Norman with 15 minutes left to play. Marquis took aim from distance with what was a tame effort in truth, but Norman palmed the ball into the back of the net as Rovers cruised towards three points. There would be time for a fifth too, with Marquis playing the ball out wide to Matty Blair, who in-turn crossed the ball into the area for the on-rushing substitute James Coppinger, who duly obliged with a diving header into the corner.
Ryan Manning has been recalled from his loan spell by parent club Queens Park Rangers. The midfielder joined the Millers on a season long loan deal in August, but the Hoops have exercised their option of a recall in January. Manning has made 18 appearances during his loan stint with the Millers, netting four times. His highlight came in the home victory against Swansea City where his two penalties earned the Millers a 2-1 success. During his time at AESSEAL New York Stadium his form earned him a place in the provisional squad for the Republic of Ireland. Everyone at Rotherham United would like to thank Ryan for his efforts whilst with the Millers, and we wish him well for the future.

WILKS STAYING AT ROVERS FOR REST OF SEASON Mallik Wilks has agreed a new loan deal which will keep him at the Keepmoat Stadium until the end of the season as Rovers’ quick January transfer window strategy continues to pay off. Wilks joined Rovers on loan from Sky Bet Championship side Leeds United in July and has already made 30 appearances across all competitions, scoring eight goals to be the side’s second highest scorer behind John Marquis. He has also contributed four assists. He is the second loanee to extend his stay at Rovers this January following Herbie Kane who finalised his deal before Christmas after
an impressive opening half to the season in red and white. Confirmation of Wilks’ stay at the Keepmoat Stadium comes a day after news of Tyler Smith’s loan from Sheffield United, while manager Grant McCann has also added Kieran Sadlier to his side as he looks to push for a place in the end of season play-offs.

WILDER’S WIGAN VERDICT The Blades boss gives his verdict on the 3-0 New Year’s Day victory at the DW Stadium. Chris Wilder felt a much-improved second-half showing was crucial, as United began 2019 with a victory at Wigan. David McGoldrick fired the Blades in front before the break, before goals from Mark Duffy and Billy Sharp confirmed the success, but Wilder wasn’t particularly pleased with the opening 45 minutes. He remarked: “Second-half, we were really good. First-half it was tight, and Wigan missed the best chance of it in my opinion. “We were loose in possession and it took a while for us to get going. We probably
scored against the run of play. “We knew we needed to lift it second-half. Wigan are a good side with some players that can hurt you, but it isn’t going for them at the moment. We needed to put them to bed and thankfully we did.” Wilder continued: “I’m not satisfied with
us being in control and reasonable, I want us to go and take the game away from the opposition. “We’ve set high standards and to win games in the Championship you have to do a lot of things right, it was a slow performance first-half, but we
smartened ourselves up. “The second goal is a great counter attacking goal, the best we’ve scored all season. Deano gets a ball our quickly and within two passes it’s in the back of the net. “The third really put us in a position where we were nice and safe.”
