HAPPY 80TH BIRTHDAY TO THE MAN WITH THE PRAM JOHN BURKHILL This week people across Sheffield celebrated John Burkhill’s - the man with the pram - 80th birthday, with a surprise celebration event at the Sheffield Town Hall, organised by BBC Radio Sheffield. John is one of Sheffield’s most famous local heroes – known throughout the city for his fundraising walks for Macmillan Cancer Support. Speaking about John
and the hard work he has done over the last 30 years, Councillor Julie Dore, Leader of Sheffield City Council, said: “It’s people like John who make our city so great, he is a true reflection of Sheffield’s spirit and makes us all feel very proud. For more than 30 years he has tirelessly put his heart and soul in to raising money for Macmillan, taking part in more than 1000 organised races
with his distinctive green wig and pram, braving the hills of Sheffield and beyond in all kinds of weather. He is known and loved across the city, in fact never have we received so many nominations for someone’s efforts and contribution to be recognised. In 2015 following a huge public appeal, John, alongside a host of celebrities, hit the big switch for Sheffield’s Christmas Lights and
just one month later he was honoured in our first ever Civic Awards ceremony, a truly well-deserved acknowledgement of his determination.

Players Championship Finals winner Daryl Gurney, Grand Slam of Darts champion Gerwyn Price and German Darts Masters winner Mensur Suljovic all compete for a second year, having made their Premier League debuts in 2018. Five-time World Champion Van Barneveld, the 2014 Premier League champion, will play in a 14th successive season as part of his farewell year on the circuit ahead of retirement. Four-time champion Michael van Gerwen will be begin his title defence when the season begins on Thursday February 7, having claimed glory in 2013, 2016, 2017 and 2018 and also won his third World Championship title on Tuesday night. Last year’s runner-up Michael Smith – Tuesday’s World Championship finalist - remains in the field following his success at the World Championship, while two-time champion Gary Anderson, former World Champion Rob Cross and 2017 Premier League finalist Peter Wright are also in action. Following the opening night in Newcastle on February 7, the Premier League visits Glasgow, Dublin, Exeter, Aberdeen, Nottingham and Berlin

From Superheroes to Superstars As an established theatre school, we are in the privileged position of working with young people who continue to inspire us with the journeys they go on while they are with us and after they graduate. For some children, they start their dream of becoming performers after they take their first theatre arts class and a decade later, we are watching them on the West End stage. Take Robson Broad from Razzamataz, he was one of our first scholarship winners with The Stage newspaper and is now part of the world-wide sensation, Hamilton. For other children, joining their local Razzamataz school means so much more than just learning to sing, dance and act as Celia Adams, mum to Inters student Brooke explains. “Razzamataz is quite simply the most amazing, nurturing and fun environment for children. My daughter started classes last year and the change in her has been incredible. She has gone from being a rather shy and quiet girl to confident and self-assured. It's so much more than just a theatre school.” This is why for 2019, Razzamataz is spreading the word that performing arts is for all children and young people and the disci-
pline of attending weekly classes, working as a team and committing to practice will help children achieve their full potential. The message is simply: ‘From Superheroes to Superstars! #BeSuperAtRazz. “We want to enable each child that we teach the chance to be the superhero of their own story,” explains Helen, Principal of Razzamataz Sheffield. “For some children, that might be battling shyness or confidence issues and then having the experience of stepping onto the stage and delivering a line for the first time. For others, it might be attending weekly classes even though they have physical difficulties and for others, it might be working as a professional performer. These are all heroic acts and ones that we make sure the children know to be proud of.”
Razzamataz are now offering free trial sessions on 12th and 19th January and welcoming any child age 2-18 who would like to have a go. To find out more or secure your child a place on one of the free sessions you can contact a member of the Razz team on 07979 189177 or sheffield@ razzamataz.co.uk.

NEW YEAR NEW SAVINGS If your New Year’s resolution is to get your finances in order you need to read this! Money Saving Expert Martin Lewis show you how to save hundreds of pounds, here are a few of his tips. Broadband & Telephone Millions overpay - yet it takes 5 minutes to cut your costs. to slash your bills with prices from ‘£10.24/mth’ Many pay up to £45/mth for the slowest broadband speeds, but hot, short-lived promos can help you dramatically slice costs. Standard broadband speed, average 10Mb: Plusnet equivalent £10.24/mth New. Fast fibre, average 35Mb: Vodafone equiv £17.23/mthNew. Faster fibre, average 63Mb: Vodafone equiv £19.84/ mth. Check the Broadband Unbundled tool for loads more deals. Credit & Store Card Debt Check if you pay interest - if so, use his 2-minute tool to shift debt to 0%, for up to 27months NO FEE. You can save £100s with a balance transfer card. It repays debts on old cards for you, so you owe it instead, but at 0%. Car Insurance. Take 10 minutes to see if you can save £100s, even if not at renewal. Insurers rely on people’s laziness to jack up renewal prices, so always compare before you auto-renew. You’ll normally get the best prices 21 days before your year’s up, so remember to get quotes then. Use comparison sites to check dozens of insurers in minutes - but they don’t all cover the same providers so check a few. Our current order is MoneySupupermarket*, Confused*, Gocompare* & Compare The Market*. Direct Line* & Aviva* aren’t on comparisons so contact direct for a quote Home insurance. Never auto-renew and use comparisons sites to get the best deal for you. Mortgages. This many people’s biggest monthly expense - can you slash yours by £1,000s? About 2million overpay on a standard variable rate - which most intro deals revert to when your cheap rate is over. You could save £1000’s! Read the MSE Remortgage Guide for help picking a deal. Petrol & Diesel. Drive down costs by finding your cheapest
forecourt in seconds. A simple cost-cutter to save on expensive fuel - which is up 20per/litre in 3yrs - is to buy from a cheap filling station, and a nifty tool finds the cheapest near you. See how to find cheap petrol & diesel, plus fuel-efficiency tips. Mobiles. Pay £10/mth+ for mobile use? STOP and check if big savings are possible. If out of contract, happy with your handset and you’ve had your Sim a while, you can probably slash costs as Sim prices have dived in recent years. Most people use less than 5GB of data and at this level there are lots of sub-£10/ mth deals. Check old bills for your usage or try a free checker tool. See the Best Sim Only Deals guide for more options and switching help. Supermarket Shopping. Are you a brand snob? Don’t be, and save thousands of pounds a year. Supermarkets are geniuses at making us spend our hardearned cash on stuff we don’t need, and they don’t always make discounts easy to find. Play the Downshift Challenge by going a brand level lower, sometimes with little taste difference. TV Bills. Haggle your way to a better deal. With TV, there aren’t many standout deals now, but haggling is often your best way of netting a bargain as the biggies are among the easiest firms across the UK to haggle with. In a September poll, 85% of Sky customers who voted said they successfully haggled, followed by Virgin (82%), BT (80%) & TalkTalk (80%). Ensure you don’t overpay for channels you never watch! Council Tax. Can you save money? Up to 400,000 homes may be in the wrong council tax band as original valuations were slapdash. Scrapping free TV licence for over75s is an ‘act of cruelty’: says Esther Rantzen. As you will probably know, the BBC is wanted to scrap free TV licence to the older 75’s. This could be one of your family members. Dame Esther Rantzen, the founder of The Silver Line telephone helpline for lonely older people, said: “It would be an act of cruelty to deprive them of a television if they could not afford to pay the licence fee.” More than 4.46 million homes with older residents receive a free TV licence, saving them £150.50 A discussion paper commissioned by the BBC has described the concession as “no longer justified” as the wealth of over75s had “improved significantly”. It said “profound economic changes” meant that pensioners are now the “least likely age group” to live in poverty. But many campaigners and charities
pointed out that many older people live in poverty and rely on their televisions to combat loneliness. Latest figures show 1.9 million pensioners still live in poverty – including nearly one in five over-75s. As many as 3.6 million older people in the UK live alone, more than two million of whom are 75-plus, and one in four older people views the television as their main form of companionship. Dame Esther said: “The Silver Line receives thousands of calls from older people through the evening, especially on long winter nights when the TV is their only friend. They have paid the licence fee all their lives – this is the way the BBC can give something back.” National Pensioners Convention general secretary Jan Shortt called on the Government to take the licence concession back “in-house”. She said: “Ever since George Osborne forced the BBC to take over responsibility
1300 09/01/2019 SOCIAL HOUSING CRISIS HIGHLIGHTED BY SHELTER
New analysis carried out by Shelter shows that the delivery of social homes in Yorkshire and the Humber has plummeted since the start of the decade from 1,584 homes in 2009-10 to 401 in 2017-18 – a dramatic fall of 75%. Despite this, the need for social housing in the area is high with almost 145,000 households on the waiting list for social housing. This comes as Shelter’s social housing commission launches a landmark report calling for an ambitious 3.1 million new homes across the country, extending the offer of social housing to many more people. After the Grenfell Tower fire, the charity brought together 16 independent commissioners with diverse backgrounds from across the political spectrum to examine the housing crisis in England as it exists today. Having spent a year listening to the views of hundreds of social tenants, 31,000 members of the public and a range of housing experts, the commissioners put forward a bold vision for social housing, and who should have the opportunity to live in it. Building for our future: a vision for social housing recommends the government invests in a major 20-year housebuilding programme, which would offer a social home to millions who fail to qualify under the current system, including: • 1.27 million homes for those in greatest housing need – homeless households, those living with a disability or long-term illness, or living in very poor conditions. • 1.17 million homes for ‘trapped renters’ - younger families who cannot afford to buy and face a lifetime in expensive and insecure private renting. • 690,000 homes for older private renters – people over 55 struggling with high housing costs and insecurity beyond retirement. The commissioners argue politicians cannot remain idle at a time when half of young people have no chance of ever buying a home, private renters on lower incomes spend an average of 67% of their earnings on rent, and almost 280,000 people in England are homeless.

AN ACT OF CRUELTY SAYS ESTHER! DOLCE VITA for the free TV licence, we have known that they would try and get rid of it. Also it’s not the job of the broadcaster to administer or fund part of our wider welfare policy. That is a job for government and it needs to be returned to the most suitable department as a matter of urgency.” This comes on the back of the annoucement made by the Government in 2015, that the BBC would be repsonsible for bearing the cost of the free licences, rather than the taxpayer and benefit system, and the change takes effect in 2020. Will you or your relatives be affected? If so you can help by adding your voice to the campaign to keep the free TV Licence in place. YOUR CHANCE TO JOIN MONSTER MUSICAL HIT SHREK! You could call it the monster opportunity to join the biggest musical of the year! Shrek: The Musical is the stage sensation adapted from the smash hit Hollywood movie animated comedy favourite, a crazy re-boot of some familiar fairy tales with a cool contemporary twist. Following hugely popular runs on Broadway, in the West End and on tour, the show will now get its South Yorkshire amateur premier in a lavish new production from STOS Theatre Company. Opening at Sheffield’s Lyceum Theatre on November 12 2019, Shrek promises to be the acclaimed theatre company’s most spectacular production to date. And director Mark Feakins is looking for as many new faces as possible to join the cast of the show which, with a budget of more than £100,000, will be the most ambitious community theatre event of the year. “The audition process begins in January and we want to throw it open to anybody who has ever wanted to join a show of this scale on the famous Lyceum stage,” said Mark. “For anybody who has ever sung in their local choir, pub or club or acted in a small theatre group, this is the chance to make an impression on a much bigger stage. “There are a massive amount of people in Sheffield who are doing all sorts of great things and we want them to come along and join us in a brilliant West End show.” One of the biggest of the current crop of musi-
cal hits, Shrek needs a company of up to 40, with parts ranging from the famous leads - big green ogre Shrek and his fairytale Princess Fiona - to a host of smaller character parts and places in the ensemble. “Theatre is an amazing hobby and an incredible social experience,” Mark explained. “We have a six month rehearsal period, meeting twice a week on Wednesday and Friday with some Sundays in the final two months as opening night approaches. “And the only stipulation for joining STOS is that you have to be over 16 at the time of the performance.” As part of the process, STOS is hosting a series of workshop at Sheffield’s Parkwood Academy, starting on Friday January 11 at 7.30pm, with four further sessions on January 14, 18 and 31 and then finally on February 1. Once the show has been successfully cast, full rehearsals - again at Parkwood Academy - do not begin until June. “STOS is an incredibly friendly society and you get the opportunity to work with a professional director, choreographer and Musical Director as well as a full professional orchestra,” said Mark. “This is both a wonderful show and a wonderful opportunity so make a New Year resolution to come and join us.” For full information simply visit the STOS website at stos.org.uk or or go to the STOS Theatre Company Facebook page.

The days of scrambling around for change to pay to park across Sheffield are now at an end with a new cashless card payment system set to be rolled out across the city. Sheffield City Council is introducing 193 new state of the art solar-powered machines with chip and pin / contactless card payment facilities built in. This will complement the existing Pay By Phone service which allows customers to pay over the phone, or by smartphone app. As part of the upgrade, some older machines will be removed and replaced. Some locations will see machines replaced with Pay by Phone poles and signs, but there will always be a machine payment option within walking distance. In the latest upgrade, machines will continue to accept cash, but over half the machine stock in Sheffield will now also provide additional facilities to pay by chip and pin or contactless cashless payments. Councillor Jack Scott, Cabinet Member for Development and Transport at Sheffield City Council, said: “These upgrades will improve reliability and make parking easier and more convenient for everyone. I’m really proud we are replacing all the mainspowered equipment around the city with solar powered machines. This shows how every bit of the Council can play its part in helping to tackle climate change. Introducing contactless card readers, alongside our Pay By Phone app means it will be quicker
and easier to pay for parking than ever before. “Of course, I hope that motorists don’t experience inconvenience while these machines are upgraded but having a service that works for everyone and respects the way people pay for things in the 21st century is a very visible sign of progress and will be worth any temporary disruption. “Whilst some places have moved towards entirely cashless parking we still think there are people who prefer to use cash and I don’t want to exclude them.” Paybyphone is an easy to use app. Simply download the Payby-
phone app at your own leisure before parking. Paybyphone is convenient and can be used on the move giving you the freedom to socialise, shop or visit friends without time limitations. Businesses can benefit from the paybyphone app as customers don’t need to leave to top up parking payment. Motorists can top up their parking virtually with reminders on the app or by text, which reduces the worry about fines. Results from other cities show that customers using cashless payment methods tend to stay longer than cash users, meaning this will hopefully benefit local businesses.

COUNTY SENIOR FOOTBALL with Michael Clarke
The County Senior returned for the first time in the New Year on weekend after a two week hiatus during the Christmas holidays. It was a very busy start as well, with a heavy league schedule, plus a handful of games in the League Cup and the Brian Bradley Memorial Trophy. League Cup There were a couple of outstanding League Cup Third Round games to play last weekend. The first of which came at Jubilee Sports Ground, where Jubilee Sports beat Denaby Main to set up a Quarter-Final tie with Stocksbridge Park Steels Development. Wombwell Main were also winners at home, beating Penistone Church 3-0. Wombwell will face last years’ winners Swinton Athletic in the Quarter-Final. Dodworth Miners Welfare Reserves of Division Two were beaten 4-1 at home by Grimethorpe Sports. Grimethorpe will be away against Caribbean Sports in the next round. The Quarter-Finals will be played on the Saturdays of early-mid February. Brian Bradley Memorial Trophy The last First Round tie of the Brian Bradley Memorial Trophy took place on Saturday at Far Lane, where Hepworth United of the Premier Division narrowly defeated Division Two’s New Bohemians 1-0. Hepworth will face Denaby United in round two, with the second round ties taking place on February 2nd and 9th. Premier Division Second placed Dodworth Miners Welfare opened 2019, with just their third league loss of the season, as they were beaten 2-1 away against Frecheville. League leaders North Gawber Colliery took advantage of this slip to put daylight between the two. North Gawber were comfortable winners 3-0 away against South Kirkby and now sit three points
clear.Stocksbridge Park Steels Reserves moved into third place, level on points with Dodworth (but have played a game more), after a 3-0 home win over Denaby United. Stocksbridge leapfrogged Swinton Athletic, who slip to fourth place after a 3-3 draw at home to bottom side Handsworth Parramore Reserves. Goals from Daniel Foster, Jack Jones, Nathan Foster and Joe Littlewood gave High Green Villa a 4-2 win over Oughtibridge WMSC and a vital three points. High Green remain third bottom, but are now three points clear of second bottom South Kirkby Colliery Division One It may be a new year, but not all things have changed, as Ecclesfield Red Rose 1915 beat Boynton Sports to claim their 13th straight victory in Division One. Ecclesfield have a four point lead over second placed AFC Dronfield at the halfway stage (Dronfield have played three more games). Fourth placed and in-form Houghton Main hosted third placed Burngreave FC at Middlecliffe Lane. The spoils were shared though with the game ending 2-2. Two sides in Division One scored seven away from home this week. Kiveton Park were 7-0 winners against Millmoor Juniors and Caribbean Sports, who just below them in seventh beat Sheffield Bankers 7-1. A Devon Garbutt brace inspired Wombwell Main Reserves to a 4-0 win over Hemsworth Miners Welfare Reserves at the Yorkshire NU Build Stadium. Division Two There was just one game in Division Two, but it was a big one with second placed Wombwell Town travelling to third placed Stocksbridge Park Steels Development. It was the result neither wanted though, ending 1-1. Wombwell are now a point behind leaders Sheffield Union, but have played a game more, Stocksbridge are a further seven points back.

facility, but as it was an experiment, I could (just) justify it to see if piscine location tallied with air pressure statistics. It doesn’t identify the type of fish though, and on size alone, I judged them to be roach or bream, so opted for two bottom baits fished into the old river bed. One was suspended beneath a float, fished overdepth, the other the usual running leger tactics, and both were moved at one hour intervals in case pike were lying up on the bottom. Two more lure anglers wandered around the whole lake and caught nothing, and a deadbait angler set up in my line of sight, so I watched him intently to see if he caught through the day. He didn’t, and as the day progressed, I didn’t either… very frustrating! I looked at the barometer, and realised that as darkness fell, it was still dropping, so I held on, hoping for a chance, that pike would switch on, and begin to feed. If you stare at the bright red top of a pike float for long enough, it will move. Mostly, it’s your willing imagination, but I’d been watching mine intently for hours without a hint of interest from pike, when I thought I saw an almost imperceptible ring emit from the float tip; I sat bolt upright. For five long minutes, I watched intently, willing the float to slide away, but it sat there on a mirror like surface, without any further movement. I looked away for a second, and I was sure it dipped! I rubbed my eyes, certain I’d been seeing things, but the white band below the red tip showed itself; just a rise of a couple of millimetres, but there…it was moving… Again, I concentrated on the red tip, and a few seconds later, it rose up in the water and laid flat; something had picked up the bait! I moved to the rod, watching the float as it bolted upright in the water, swirled in a circle, then sank away into the depths… A firm strike saw the hooks bed home, and I felt the head shake of a pike down in the deep water. My opponent tried in vain to discharge the hooks, and after a minute or two of scrapping, the float reappeared as the trace came into view. I can’t say it was a huge fish, a scraper double if I was lucky, but it was in excellent condition and fought surprisingly well. Quickly freed of the trace, it was photographed and rested in the net prior to

It’s back to Football matters after the two week break, and speaking of breaks it is very unfortunatly for Wilson of High Green Vets who broke his leg in the Cup Match against Dinnington Town. LEAGUE CUP Quarter Finals Cup Holders Wickersley Old Village are through to the Semi Finals after their 7-1 thrashing of Hemsworth Miners, Hartley 3, Batchelor 2, Barraclough, Lund were the marksmen for the winners, Barrick grabbing a consolation goal for Hemsworth. Handsworth Parramore travelled to play Swinton Town and came away with an impressive 6-1 win, with goals from Mr reliable Cartledge 4, Allen and Davenport. Plough Rangers were 4-0 winners against Denaby United, Williams 2, Brooks and Neymar. HSBC Bank were also 4-0 winners against Caribbean Sports, Carnie, Cook, Muloney and a pen from Morris. Looking at the teams that have got through there should be some cracking Semi Finals. SID BUTTERFIELD CUP Quarter Finals Mosborough Trinity were 2-1 winners away at Royston Oakwood with goals from Williams and Cartledge. Scawthorpe Club were 5-0 winners away at AFC Dronfield. return, then swam away vertically downwards to resume its ambush position. I was pleased; after a difficult day, spent constantly moving baits, changing baits, and thinking about baits whilst watching the barometer, I was beginning to think that there may indeed be some validity in keeping an eye on it to correlate pressure with feeding spells. My compatriot, an angler who knows the water better than I, hadn’t caught, nor had he seen a fish. His three rod attack hadn’t worked, and the only thing I’d done differently was move my baits to different spots. In truth, a single fish proves no theories, especially about air pressure, but it HAS got me thinking, and the more research I do, the more I believe I’m on to something, something which will enhance my angling understanding and hopefully improve my catch rate. I made a note of the pressure at the beginning of the session, during, and at the time the fish hit the bait, so I’m beginning to build a log to see what I can discover… hopefully I can prove a relationship between air pressure, pike and feeding, but only time will tell… I’ll just have to go fishing more I suppose, which seems a like a great scientific result to me! Give it some thought; if you get chance, make some notes. If nothing else, it will get you thinking about what is going on around you, and maybe you’ll crack the code before I do!

WE CAN LEARN A LOT FROM THE EXPERIENCE
ROTHERHAM United boss Paul Warne was proud of his side’s efforts at the Eithad Stadium despite a sobering defeat at the hands of current Premier League champions, Manchester City this afternoon. The Millers found themselves behind early on when Raheem Sterling calmly stroked home, but they gradually got their foothold in the clash by more than matching their illustrious opponents for large spells of the first period. However, Rotherham’s hopes of an upset were as good as over by the interval when Phil Foden’s fortuitously doubled City’s lead before Semi Ajayi inavertedly diverted the ball into his own net soon after. Pep Guardiola’s side kept their foot on the pedal in the second period, and further strikes from Gabriel Jesus, Riyad Mahrez, Nicolas Otamendi and sub Leroy Sane left the Millers on the receiving end of a heavy defeat, as they bowed out of the Emirates FA Cup at the third round stage. Speaking to the assembled media afterwards, Warne admitted that his side struggled to get to grips with the pace and intensity of City’s game for large parts of the clash. “I think we came across a good Manchester City side, who thoroughly deserved the win,” Warne stated. “I couldn’t ask for much more from my lads, but the gulf in class was there for all to see. I
MCCANN: WE SHOWED UNBELIEVABLE CHARACTER TO CAUSE EMIRATES FA CUP UPSET Grant McCann believes his team showed unbelievable character to cause an Emirates FA Cup upset beating Sky Bet Championship Preston North End 3-1 at the Deepdale Stadium. It has been almost a decade since Rovers reached the cup’s fourth round and almost six decades since they overcame higher-league opposition away from home but any hoodoo around the cup has certainly been broken after an assured performance by McCann’s men sealed victory. However, it wasn’t the win that most impressed the manager, it was the way his team responded after conceding. “I thought we were outstanding from the first minute to the last but the most pleasing thing for me was that after we conceded, the

hope the lads learn from this experience and use it for the remainder of the season. “It was a joy to bring my side here and I hope they can learn from how good Man City were, in terms of how they play and what they do when they lose the ball.” Despite the nature of the score line at the Eithad, Warne felt his side had their best spell of the clash just prior to the internal, although he conceded that City’s second and third goals soon after, gave the Millers a proverbial mountain to climb at the break. “After 1-0, we had a good few passages of the game,” Warne added. “If we get in a 1-0, I’d have been really pleased but two quick goals killed the game. At half-time, it was more damage limitation for us.” Speaking afterwards, Warne was quick to single out the contribution of youngster Ben Wiles who belied his tender years, by continuing to make his mark on the game despite coming up against the likes of Kevin De Bruyne in City’s midfield. “I thought Ben Wiles was great in midfield. It was just his third game. He did not show them too much respect. I’m really pleased with him. “We are not embarrassed by the score line. I spoke to Pep (Guardiola) before and after the game and I shook his hand and appreciated the respect he showed our team by putting a strong team out. Following the final whistle, Warne took time out to acclaim the large Millers travelling contingent, who made the trip over the Pennines and continued to support their side in trying circumstances - which was a point not lost on the Rotherham chief. “The support was hugely impressive,” Warne enthused. “I felt I let them down a little bit as they did not have a lot to shout about. I wish we could have got a goal. They stayed with the team. They appreciated what our lads tried to do against world-class players.” response was first class,” he said. “You see it a lot in the FA Cup games where the lower league team concedes and then they capitulate, I thought we showed unbelievable character to stick to our game plan and stick to what we believe in. “I said to the boys, go and show you’re just as good as them. Just because it says Championship beside Preston and League One beside Doncaster, that doesn’t have to define you. We want to be in that league and I thought we were very good today.” McCann has said his focus is now firmly back on the league and his side’s visit to Wycombe Wanderers on Saturday. “The FA Cup draw is always a fine spectacle and we’ll see what it throws up,” he commented. “For the club financially, it would be great to have a Man United or Man City away though if we get Man City away, I might ask the referee if we can put 15 players on the pitch! “We won’t get carried away with ourselves, we’ve had a good win today against a good team but our main focus switches to the league and to Wycombe Wanderers next week.”
WILES DELIGHT AT NEW MILLERS DEAL
Rotherham United midfielder Ben Wiles says he has enjoyed every moment in the build-up to signing his new contract, which will see him remain with the club until June 2022, and insists he is keen to keep improving under boss Paul Warne. The midfielder, who progressed through the club’s Academy system from the U9s age group, was handed his first league start last month and has been a regular in the first team setup over the last couple of seasons. Wiles was quick to point to the influence of the Millers coaching staff who have allowed him to express himself and continue his

development, despite the 19-year-old admitting there have been some tough times along the way. “It’s been a good road and I’ve enjoyed every moment of it, so I’m delighted to have the chance to keep doing it,” he told www. themillers.co.uk. “At the moment I’m really happy with the way things are going. I’m getting involved down at the training ground and they’re treating me with so much respect and I’m really glad that I’ve sat down to sign this contract. “I’ve had big influences from coaches like Hammy, who push me every day and the Gaffer and Richie trust me and show me off a lot and I owe a lot to them. “There have been rocky parts to it but in football you just have to ride the wave as they say and get on with it. “ Wiles also conceded that he has had to be patient in waiting for his opportunity and after having a taste of first team football in the EFL Cup tie at Everton earlier in the season, was rewarded for biding his time with a first league start following at Bristol City last month. “At Everton I was really excited, but when you’re not quite there you know within yourself that you have things to work on and I just kept my head down and working in training to get to what I’m doing now,” he added. “After I got the news that I was playing [at Bristol City] I was buzzing and I couldn’t wait to get out. I’ve been itching for some minutes and I was really glad that I got my chance. “I just want to try and stay in the team for as long as possible and give the manager everything I’ve got. I’ll work my socks off and hopefully we have a good end to the season.”

FA CUP WIN PROVIDES EXTRA MOTIVATION FOR PROMOTION PUSH Mallik Wilks said Rovers were great value for their Emirates FA Cup third round win over Sky Bet Championship Preston North End on Sunday and were fully deserving of their progression to the next stage. Wilks sealed things with Rovers’ third goal in the 3-1 win at Deepdale with Rovers progressing to the fourth round of the cup for the first time since 2010, and the striker says the result could be a catalyst for the rest of the season. “Everyone in the dressing room is buzzing after that, we’re all feeding off each other’s positive energy, we just want to keep this going in the league now, keep this great form going and really kick on,” he said. “It’s a great feeling to get into the next round of the cup, we came here and played with no fear, we controlled the game throughout, so we’re fully deserving of our win I think.
“For me, this ranks as the best game I’ve ever played in, I’d even probably put it higher than making my debut, I managed to get myself in the right area for my goal and anticipated the ball coming to me, and I just knew the ball would fall for me.” Wilks extended his stay at the Keepmoat Stadium until the end of the season on New Year’s Day, with Sunday’s strike his ninth goal in 32 appearances, and for the Leeds United loanee, promotion is the only aim. “I’m buzzing to be here for the rest of the season now, I’ve got that security and I’m ready to push on. I had a few options, but I didn’t want to go anywhere else, the end goal for me is getting promotion and I want to achieve that here,” he added. “Winning against Preston shows that there’s no one we should be worried about in our own league if we can turn it on like we have against a Championship team. “I think this result really puts down a marker for us, we’ve shown that we’re able to cut it against teams in a higher division than where we are, and we can really use this as motivation in our promotion push.”

IN THE HAT BUT NOT AT OUR BEST The Owls’ caretaker manager Steve Agnew is pleased to be in the hat for the FA Cup fourth round but agreed Wednesday were not at their best against Luton in round three at Hillsborough. The S6 contest spawned few chances and the tie heads to Kenilworth Road on Tuesday week for the replay. Agnew said: “We’re in the hat for the next round which is the most important thing today but did we have that final ball and edge in the final
third? Probably not. “With the talent we have, we know we weren’t at our best and maybe a little bit of that was due to all the games over the Christmas period. “With the time we have had with the lads so far, we wanted to go for it today and so did they and we went strong. “Their keeper was the busier of the two but I don’t think we quite did enough so we go again in the replay.” Whether midfield duo Sam Hutchinson and Barry Bannan will be
available in Bedfordshire remains to be seen. Both were withdrawn during the game through injury but Agnew is hopeful the knocks are minor. He added: “With Sam, he just felt his groin a little so it was sensible for him to come off. Barry took a whack on the knee near the end. “Both of the lads have been with the physios and will be assessed from there but hopefully they will be okay.”
CHELSEA AWAIT THE WINNERS OF LUTON V WEDNESDAY
FA Cup. The Owls head to Kenilworth Road on Tuesday 15 January for the third round replay following the 0-0 draw at Hillsborough last weekend. Chelsea, the current FA Cup holders, progressed to round four with a 2-0 victory over Nottingham Forest on home soil on Saturday.
OWLS V BRENTFORD CHAMPIONSHIP FIXTURE POSTPONED
Sheffield Wednesday or Luton Town will face Chelsea at Stamford Bridge in the fourth round of the Emirates
Sheffield Wednesday’s home clash with Brentford has been postponed. The Owls were
originally due to face the Bees on Saturday 26 January but due to FA Cup involvement, the game will be rescheduled. The fourth round of the FA Cup is set to take place on that weekend. Brentford sealed their passage to the next round following their 1-0 win over Oxford at Griffin Park. Wednesday could still
join them but must first face a tough trip to Kenilworth Road
in the replay after drawing 0-0 with Luton at Hillsborough on Saturday.
A WELCOME BREAK Owls skipper Tom Lees said the preparation time the team has ahead of travelling to in-form Hull City on Saturday is welcome, following a hectic festive period. Wednesday drew 0-0 with Luton Town in the FA Cup on Saturday to conclude a busy schedule that saw five games in just two weeks. On the week-long build-up to the clash at the KCOM Stadium this weekend, Lees said: “It’s very welcome, the fixtures have been mad. “It’s good to get rested up because we face the in-form side of the division in the next game. “Hull have shown how a bit of confidence and momentum can be dangerous, we’ll have to be right on it. “We played them in August and we were the better side, they were really struggling. Then suddenly out of nowhere they get that form going

The skipper added: “I’m really pleased for Sam because he’s had a tough time, it’s never easy to get an injury. “We’ve seen that when
he was at Barnsley, having played against him, what a good player he is. “And when he was at Derby last year he did really well. “I’m really pleased because he offers something different, but we need to be patient with him because it’s not easy when you’ve been out for a long period of time.”

CUP EXIT ANGERS BOSS Chris Wilder gives his reaction to the Blades’ Bramall Lane exit from the FA Cup, with Barnet progressing. Chris Wilder pulled no punches when analysing United’s cup exit at the hands of Barnet at Bramall Lane on Sunday. The Blades boss remarked: “I’ve not really got a description that is bad enough to describe that performance. “I won’t take anything away from Barnet though, they were outstanding in every department, we weren’t second best, we were fourth or fifth best across the pitch. “We needed to change the team. The players that have got us to third in the table have put an unbelievable
shift in throughout the Christmas period and we should have had enough to get through this tie.” Wilder added: “But the players were arrogant in their play, went off plan and played as individuals, deservedly we got knocked out of the cup and I don’t buy into the rubbish
about the cup being a distraction. “We pride ourselves, I have done since walking through the door, on turning up, whether it’s a pre-season friendly, a league game or a cup tie, unfortunately the players decided not to. “Our identity went right out of the
window and I’m not just going to brush this one under the carpet. “I feel let down, disappointed and angry. I thought Barnet were outstanding, I’ve worked at that level and I knew what was coming. I knew they’d bring their best, compete and be a handful.”
BOSS BACKING MADINE TO BE A SUCCESS AS A BLADE Chris Wilder believes Gary Madine will prove to be a shrewd signing for the Blades during the secondhalf of the Sky Bet Championship campaign. The 28-year-old striker has arrived from Cardiff City until the end of the season and Wilder is delighted to have netted his latest recruit. The manager remarked: “I’ve heard so much nonsense about what Gary will do to the changing room, but people have got to trust me and I
deserve that right. “We’re looking forward to working with Gary, there have been bits and pieces in the past, but I will always look into characters and how they conduct themselves. Gary will add to what we’ve got off the pitch, but more importantly on it.” Wilder added: “It’s a bold decision by the boy too, he could have taken an easy option. There were two or three top end Championship clubs that he could have gone too. “He’s made a brave move that should be respected, he’s not took the easy way out and he wanted to make this happen. “I’ve spoken to people I trust and respect who have worked with him and every time he’s played against us he’s been a proper handful.”
