BIG CHANGES ON THE HORIZON FOR DONCASTER MARKETS Doncaster Council’s vision to transform Doncaster Markets reaches a turning point as the council’s Cabinet will consider plans to appoint an expert commercial provider to run Doncaster and Mexborough markets. In what will be a new era for the historic markets, this deal will bring about major changes to Doncaster Markets layout, improving the public areas, introducing new enterprise spaces for small businesses, an increased number of local food producers,
more independent traders and a greater number of events and entertainment to run alongside the council’s existing events programme. Market Asset Management Ltd, having used their expertise in a number of other locations across the country, will work in consultation with existing traders to implement this work which will enhance the overall customer experience and complement the almost complete newly refurbished Wool Market. These improvements,
along with expert retail management will position the markets as a vibrant destination for shopping, eating out, entertainment and entrepreneurism, putting the markets at the enterprising heart of Doncaster. If approved, the preferred provider, Market Asset Management (Doncaster) Ltd. will make significant investment in the markets of £2.3m in the first five years with £6.2m invested over the proposed 25 year contract. The agreement will save the council £219k per year which includes a guaranteed
annual income of £122k. Councillor Joe Blackham, Cabinet Member for Highways, Street Scene and Traded Services, said: “The council has made significant investment in the Doncaster Markets in recent years and bringing on board an experienced markets operator at this stage will make sure the markets are able to reach their full potential. This is about transforming our historic markets and cementing them firmly at the heart of Doncaster and Mexborough town centres. “This will bring about
much needed change, making the markets a vibrant destination for shopping, eating out, entertainment and business and will complement the work being done in the wider town centre, contributing to Doncaster’s unique offer and attracting visitors from far and wide.” The decision will be made at Cabinet on 29th January and if agreed, MAM (Doncaster) Ltd. will manage the Doncaster Markets from spring this year as part of this long term arrangement.

SHEFFIELD BOMBER CRASH: FLY-PAST TO MARK ANNIVERSARY AFTER CAMPAIGN A fly-past to mark the anniversary of a fatal plane crash in a Sheffield park will take place after a campaign led by BBC Breakfast presenter Dan Walker. The US bomber - a B-17 Flying Fortress known as Mi Amigo came down in Endcliffe Park, Sheffield, in 1944 killing all 10 airmen on board. The campaign began after Mr Walker met Tony Foulds, who witnessed the crash and regularly tends to the
memorial. The US Air Force will carry out a fly-past on the anniversary on 22 February. Crews will set off in an F-15 fighter jet from RAF Lakenheath in Suffolk, home to the largest US Air Force camp in the UK. US and UK aircraft including Ospreys, Typhoons and a Dakota will also take part. Mr Foulds was playing in Endcliffe Park aged eight when he saw the plane come down. He said he felt
responsible, because the plane was trying to avoid crashing into him. Referring to his visits to the memorial, he said: “They are my family. I love them to pieces. “If I go on holiday I always make sure my son goes to visit. I always tell them how I am, what I’m doing, what the weather’s like.” Dan Walker met Mr Foulds when he was walking his dog in the park in Sheffield, and
became interested in his story. He shared Mr Foulds’ plight in a tweet which has now been liked more than 27,000 times. The US ambassador to the UK, Woody
Johnson, said: “It takes amazing people to have an amazing moment. “I am so happy you did this because now, millions of people know about these 10 men, and all the other men that died on that day too.”

In the News
I bought some new seeds for my chickens, but they can’t eat it. It’s impeccable. I hate jokes about sausages. They’re the wurst. My daughter asked me for a recommendation for a good book. I told her I had a book that has drama, romance, betrayal, excitement, action, love, loss, heroes, villains, mystery and puzzles. Pretty much everything really. Excitedly she asked me for it. I handed her the dictionary. My dad was trying to explain what sarcasm is the other day. I didn’t really understand what he was saying, but he told me he loved me.
Last night my wife and I watched three movies back to back. Luckily I was the one facing the TV. My pet chameleon can’t change its colour. It has a reptile dysfunction. I was playing chess with my friend and he said, ‘let’s make this interesting’. So we stopped playing chess. The wife said “I’m sick to death of you, everything I say goes in one ear and straight out the other.” I said “You know most of the time if I’m lucky, it doesn’t even go in one ear.” Gutted! My wife just left me because I never put the toilet seat down. To be fair, I’m not even sure why I started carrying it.

SIMPLE STEPS TO KEEP YOUR HOME SAFE We all know that keeping our home secure is important. But it can sometimes feel overwhelming to know where to start, and what steps should you take in order to deter burglars effectively? In October, the Office for National Statistics revealed that burglaries in England and Wales for the 12 months to June 2018 stood at 432,267 – a 2% rise on the previous year. Other research* has also stated 8% of burglary victims feel so traumatised by their experience that they moved home. To avoid the financial and emotional hardship caused by domestic burglary, investing in security solutions from a reliable and trusted brand is a must. An effective security system will deter potential intruders and give you peace of mind. With such a dizzying array of home security products available, it can be difficult to know where to start. That’s why the experts at Yale have launched an initiative that aims to raise awareness of the latest security standards and how a number of simple, cost-effective steps can make a real difference in keeping your home secure. Locks to talk about The first line of defence in home protection is effective locks on all external doors. Always look for the Kitemark symbol on the front of your lock cylinders
– this will tell you that the lock has passed all necessary tests by the British Standards Institution. For external doors made of wood, a mortice lock and night-latch that meets British Standard BS3621 is the ideal solution. For PVCu or composite doors, an upgrade to a British Standard Kitemark TS007 euro profile cylinder is suggested for maximum protection. For smart locks (locks that use fobs, cards, or Bluetooth via smartphone apps rather than keys), look for the new British Standard Kitemark TS621:2018 rating. Keep ‘out of sight’ in mind Leaving your expensive possessions on display for all the world to see can be an invitation to burglars looking to cash-in. Computers, jewellery, and money are all commonly stolen items, so take the time to move them away from prying eyes. For added peace of mind, a safe bolted to a concrete floor or supporting wall can provide an extra layer of security for those valuable items. Burglars are increasingly using letterbox ‘fishing’ as a way to steal items that are nearby such as keys, mobiles phones, or wallets. By placing a wire, or even their arms, through a letterbox, thieves are able to grab items quickly and quietly. A letterbox restrictor is a perfect guard against this kind of intruder. A guard over the traditional letterbox lets letters and parcels in, without giving burglars an
opportunity to get things out. Go steady on social With the rise in social media, it’s become tempting to post up your whereabouts whenever you’re on holiday or even just out for the night. However, this information is gold for potential burglars who can see exactly when your house will be unoccupied. To be on the safe side, consider waiting until your return from any holidays or breaks before posting photos online. It’s also worth reviewing your privacy settings on social media – a profile that is public can be seen by anyone in your local area, including potential burglars. Smile for the camera A survey carried out in 2017** asked former burglars what they considered to be the most effective deterrent against intrusion. At the top of the list was external CCTV cameras on the property. Fortunately, the cost of a domestic CCTV set-up has reduced drastically in the last few years. A full system costs around the same as a tablet or mobile phone and can be installed with minimal disruption. With these simple steps from the Yale experts, you can ensure that your family, home, and possessions are totally safe and secure. If you’d like more information and tips on to stop home intruders in their tracks visit www.yale.co.uk.
We all have dreams of a litter-free city. It remains an alarming fact that every year Sheffielders discard of 6,900 tonnes of rubbish on the city’s streets and in roadside bins. That’s enough for a 22 metre rubbish mountain covering an area from Pinstone Street right across the Peace Gardens! However, with the help of Sheffield firm, Fletchers Waste Management, that’s not the end of the story for Sheffield’s street waste. It’s all either recycled as raw materials for new products or used to generate electricity. With 2,551 waste bins and hundreds of miles of roadway, the huge job of keeping Sheffield tidy falls to Streets Ahead, the
City Council’s highways maintenance programme, ably supported by the armies of resolute volunteer litter picking groups which operate across the city. So what actually happens to all that waste once it drops into a bin or bin bag? Here’s what happens to Sheffield street litter when it reaches Fletchers site in Darnall: First of all, any potentially hazardous waste is removed for appropriate disposal. Next, Sheffield’s street litter is sieved by machine and picked through by hand to look for recyclable items such as plastic, paper, cardboard, wood, hardcore (rubble/ construction material) and metals.
Wood is shredded to a specification suitable for biomass energy recovery. Biomass is used to heat water, creating steam to generate power. Plastics are washed and shredded and granulated into grades which can be remoulded into products like bottles, toys and even park benches. Rocks and stones are graded by size and quality and then washed and crushed to specification for reintroduction into the construction industry. Recovered paper and cardboard is baled and graded and sent to UK paper mills where it is recycled paper for further use. Metals and glass are sorted and repurposed for re-molding into new products. Whatever’s left is shredded and sent to UK and European Energy Recovery facilities where it becomes fuel for energy generation. As waste carries a calorific value, it burns easily and the heat it generates drives turbines which create electricity for the national grid.

Wedding Guide
YOUR WEDDING GONE SOCIAL
On the other hand with this comes the presence of our phones at every part of the day. You can document your photos. Have your vows streamed live. Even send your first kiss around the world in minutes. Social media has given couples the chance to create a scrapbook of their special day from the eyes of every guest! HASHTAGS Almost every social media site uses hashtags now. A way to highlight a post or image and make content easier to find. A wedding hashtag is great for using on the big day. It means that you, your partners and
your guests can easily find any images and videos taken! If you are struggling to come up with your own special trademark we have come up with a few to give you a bit of inspiration! There is some fantastic ways to incorporate this into your day so make sure your guests know about it. Add it in the wedding program, or menus or even napkins! DO’S AND DONT’S Set some boundaries. It is fantastic to have a team of snap happy friends, BUT do not let their pics come at the expense of any
formal photography or videography. For example the photographer doesn’t want to have every photo eclipsed by an Iphone X in the frame of those special moments. Consider asking guests to pop those phones away during the service. Get those selfies in! The day goes by in a whirlwind! Grab your guests as you see them in short you make sure YOU grab the snaps you want!

BEST BAR NONE CELEBRATES TEN YEAR ANNIVERSARY People on a night out will be asked to #LoveSheffieldNights in celebration of 10 years in the Best Bar None Scheme. Across the UK, 75 Best Bar None Schemes operate with the aim of reducing alcohol related crime and disorder, building positive relationships between licensed venues, the police and local authorities, and helping staff responsibly manage licensed premises. In Sheffield, the Best Bar None scheme contributes to reduction in alcohol related disorder and helps to boost the city’s evening economy. The scheme has played a vital role over the last decade encouraging pubs and clubs in the city centre to take an active role in modelling good practice around safe drinking. It has helped to nurture the nightlife into a fun and safe environment by launching campaigns such as “Ask for Angela” and the providing multipurpose mobile phone banks for Street pastors and the scheme continues to thrive and grow. #LoveSheffieldNights is an opportunity for people to share on social media what makes Sheffield such a great night out, what it is that makes them feel safe or simply show their support for a city that makes them proud. Cllr Jim Steinke, Cabinet Member for Neighbourhoods and Community Safety said: “We are delighted as a city to be recognised for the hard work put
in to make sure that people can have a fun and safe time whatever it is they are doing in the city centre at night. The purple flag puts us amongst the best cities for what we have to offer in our city centre at night. “Best Bar None has a big part to play in this and the partnership is always looking for new and creative ways to keep people safe at night. I just want to thank everyone involved for all their continuing hard work in making sure we remain one of the safest large cities in the country.” Over the last 10 years the Best Bar None programme has championed initiatives such Ask for Angela, supported Street Pastors and encouraged licensed venues to look for ways to keep their customers safe such as providing free water and discounted soft drinks to encourage safe drinking. The partnership is made up of Sheffield Drug and Alcohol/Domestic Abuse Coordination Team (DACT) with sponsorship from specialist solicitors John Gaunt and Partners, Gosh Promo, South Yorkshire Police, and Sheffield Business Improvement District (BID). Through the commitment to Best Bar None those involved play an active role to help reduce crime and disorder, reduce alcohol related disorder and boost the night time economy. Diane Jarvis, Sheffield BID manager, said: “Sheffield BID is pleased to provide continued support for Best Bar None as it celebrates its tenth anniversary in 2019. The on-going success of the scheme highlights how businesses in the city are working together to ensure Sheffield maintains its reputation as a fun and safe city to enjoy an evening out. The BID’s involvement in the project is part of our commitment to supporting a safer city centre. The scheme is a fantastic example of how our night-time economy works together to operate premises to an exceptionally high standard, reduce alcohol-related
LIVE EVENTS AT THE PARAMOUNT
crime and address the issues of vulnerability in the city centre. This is the fourth year we’ve taken part in the judging and it is always reassuring to see high standards of practice being demonstrated by pubs, bars and nightclubs.” The quality of Sheffield’s Best Bar None scheme has been recognised by the national Best Bar None body and Sheffield has been nominated for two awards at the national awards. Nominations are for Best Overall Scheme and Most Innovative Scheme. The results will be announced at the ceremony on the 4 February. There will also be a local awards ceremony held on the 13 February where premises in Sheffield City Centre will be recognised for their contributions towards Best Bar None. This event will include the announcement of the People’s Choice Award. Customers have been given the opportunity to vote for their favourite pub, club and bar. THE BLUES BAND The Blues Band was formed in 1979, by ex Manfred Mann group members, Paul Jones and Tom McGuinness, originally to play a few pub gigs. Slide guitar ace and vocalist Dave Kelly was recruited, Gary Fletcher filled the bass post. Rob Townsend of Family fame replaced Hughie Flint in 1982 at the drums. Their new studio album FEW SHORT LINES, released on Repertoire Records, is collecting rave reviews everywhere. Expect a good selection from the new album in the show.

ANGLER’S CORNER
with Clint Walker
I’ve been back out after pike this week, selecting a tricky, gin clear former sand quarry to target, knowing full well that a blank was to be expected. It’s a tough water, not just due to an area of over forty acres, but also as a result of depths to over fifty feet, giving fish plenty of water to hide in! The lake bed could be compared to an egg box too, with loads of variations, plenty of weed, and just to add to the fun, some inquisitive bird life which have a habit of swimming through carefully laid lines… It’s not recognised as a runs water, a couple of chances per day is considered a good result, so when I arrived in the early dawn light, I was delighted to find I was the only angler there and had the pick of the pegs! As usual, I’d been keeping an eye on social media to see what and where other anglers had been fishing, but with only a single fish reported since the beginning of the year, perhaps it wasn’t as useful as normal. Having said that, I thought that pike may be lying in deeper water, so headed off for the far side of the lake where I knew I’d have around twenty feet of water in front of me. I reached the desired spot, a peg I’d never fished before, and settled in, setting up two rods, one with a popped up roach, the other with a sardine which would lay on the bottom. I pop up my baits using PikePro poly balls rather than inserts, mainly because I can firmly anchor them and don’t risk losing a balsa insert in the event that the bait is snatched. It’s down to personal preference, nothing more, but it helps my confidence if I know that there is absolutely nothing left to chance which may harm the fish. Both were cast out, the popped up bait landing with a dull thud on a clear spot, the other drifting down into weed. I quickly realised I had the baits the wrong way around but left them to prevent further disturbance; the first hour of any pike session offers a real chance of a bite, so I didn’t want to risk it! I sat back to watch the water with a brew, and within a few minutes, the alarm caught my attention with a couple of short bleeps. I watched the bobbin lift and twitch, noted the rod tip nodding, but before I got to the rod, the fish dropped the bait. Winding in, I spotted teeth marks on my sardine, but the trace was
dripping with weed, so I deduced that the wire had pulled into the greenery, caused resistance, and the pike had let go. Lesson learned. I’d watched the film ‘Jaws’ (again!) earlier in the week, and it got me thinking about ‘chum’, the tactic used to draw predators from afar. I wasn’t going to sit and ladle fish guts into the swim, but after a little bit of trial and error, I realised that using pva is a viable alternative. Once my baits have been defrosted, if not used, I replace them in the freezer in a separate draw, so I know which is which. These are then used as chopped fish when dropping rigs close in to attract pike, rather than hook baits. I had some leftover sardines, so cut them up into a bait box, added a good slug of Spotted Fin Salmon Oil and mashed it into a gooey paste. I knew the oil would help in two ways; firstly, it’s an attractant, secondly it would prevent the pva melting before the bait hit the water. Once I’d spooned some of the mix into pva mesh, it was nicked onto a treble, a bait flag pushed on to stop it coming off, and it was put back out on the spot. PVA is a technique that offers a few possibilities when predator fishing. A solid bag can be used for much the same purpose, filled with smashed fish, or even with just oil in; when it melts, the oil oozes around the hookbait to create a proper hotspot. PVA string or tape can be used to thread through fish pieces, which are then passed through the deadbait and anchored with a small piece of reed or twig. When it melts, the pieces are deposited directly around the bait, and the stop just becomes bottom debris… cheaper than boilie stops and more effective! My sardine, with added pva package, was lobbed out with an underarm cast alongside the reeds to my right, nestling into around six feet of water. As I set the rod back on the alarm, I glimpsed a shadow in the reeds which quickly resolved into a shoal of small perch; if there were prey fish, then surely there would be predators? I hoped so… I check my baits every hour or so when deadbaiting, I’d rather waste an hour than a day if baits are lost in weed, so I retrieved the popped up bait and noted a few small puncture marks which was disappointing as I’d had no indication at the rod. The bait was changed, and the rig recast. I drank tea, talked to passers-by, then as darkness started to descend, I decided that after eight hours, enough was enough, and that it was time to pack up. My cradle was the first thing

away as I use two unhooking mats when piking. I have a zip up mat which I rest inside my soft wall mega mat so that the fish can’t slide around, so as a last resort, I use that whilst packing away the main cradle. The alarm beeped a warning. I turned to see the bobbin twitch up towards the rod and watched the rod tip nod towards the slick surface of the water. The bobbin fell away, and line slowly spooled off the reel. I never leave a pike to run with a run with the bait, so I struck hard, and was pleased to hit solid resistance as the pike scarpered into deeper water, the clutch controlling the rate of descent perfectly. Behind, me, a gentleman strolling with a pushchair stopped to watch as my rod hooped over and the pike fought on. “Is it a big ‘un?” I hadn’t seen it so didn’t really know, but he left the pushchair with sleeping baby to come for a closer look as the pike broke the surface; “effing hell! I didn’t know they were that big in here!” I was quietly very pleased with what I’d seen, estimating the fish at around 20lb, and when netted, the onlooker stooped over to look at the predator’s teeth with some unease. The top treble was firmly seated in the jaw, but easily released and I held the fish aloft for him to inspect further before slipping it into the weigh sling. The needle stopped at 21lb 2oz, a pristine fish in fine fettle, and it was quickly photographed before being returned to the net to rest. I was pleased it had been witnessed, it’s always nice to surprise someone (especially a non-angler) with a big fish, and as the pike regained strength, we spent a few minutes in pleasant discussion about what else may lie within the waters. He told me that seeing the pike had made him want to start fishing again, after a hiatus of over twenty years, so you never know, it may just bring him back to the brotherhood! I encouraged him to lift the net and gently release the

pike back into the margins, and as we both watched it swim away, we were both feeling pleased by what we’d shared. On a tough water, I’d had my second good fish of the season from the clear depths, so I happily wheeled the barrow back to the van. I know there are even bigger fish to catch, so I’ll definitely be back soon…I’ve got my eye on some real monsters!
Same applied in the Topham Trophy which was postponed between Fossils Vets and Wickersley Old Village. This was a very close affair with both really going for it and it finished 1-1, so into extra time and the teams still were deadlocked at 2-2, so it was down to sudden death penalties, and it was Wickersley Old Village who went through by 4-1. PREMIER DIVISION Sheffield Academicals were 1-0 winners against Royston Oakwood meaning that they mantained their lead at the top of the Division,Webber scoring the goal. Wickersley Old Village had a excellent win against fellow promotion rivals Handsworth Parramore by 4-1, with Batchelor 2, Hartley and Outram scoring with Riley for Handsworth. Elsecar Dynamoes travelled to play Swinton Athletic and they grabbed all the points with a 2-1win. Leach and Harling with the goals, Emptage for the home side.
DIVISION1 Just one game in this division with Mosborough Trinity and Thorncliffe sharing the points with a 1-1 draw, Williams scoring for Thorncliffe. Fox 2, Millington, Thomas, Parry and Enticknap, and for AFC it was Scott and own goal. 45sDIVISION 1 Mosborough Trinity travelled to play Elsecar Dynamoes and came away with the points with a 2-1 Ellis and Scarpa scoring. Galvin with a coonsolation goal. Hallam 1860 were another side to travel and pick up all the points with a 2-1 win at HSBC Bank, Fox scring both goals for the winners. M Haslam for the Bank. 45s DIVISION 2 Dronfield Town were 4-3 victors in a close game against Civil Sports, Scott 2, Gray and Butler scoring. Another 4-3 score line was the game between Old Edwardians and South Kirkby and it was Kirkby who won, scorers for Edwardians were Naisbitt 2 and Coates. THEY WERE MORE RUTHLESS THAN US
Millers manager Paul Warne gave his reaction after seeing his side slip to a 4-2 defeat against Brentford at the AESSEAL New York Stadium. “It was frustrating,” said Warne. “We work hard all week to get the lads to be the best they can be. We warned the lads about the first goal they got and how they play. As the first half wore on I thought we were more comfortable. “In fairness, we should have been 3-1 up at half-time. We had unbelievable chances to score which we didn’t take. “We started the second-half quite bright. We scored and then got one back. Unfortunately, they’re very good players. It was pass and move and they’ve cut us open and took the lead again.” Twice the Millers fought back with goals from Jon Taylor and an own goal but Brentford’s quality shone through with some clinical finishing to secure a 4-2 victory. “We’ve thrown the kitchen sink and that’s the disappointing thing,” continued Warne. “I’ve said to the lads ‘stick to plan A’ but I’m not blaming the lads. We played a little bit off the cuff which left us open at the back. “From a coach’s point of view, everything has to be stoppable. There’s no disputing it’s
MCCANN HAILS SECOND HALF SHOWING AGAINST BURTON Grant McCann was pleased with his team’s second half response in Saturday’s draw with Burton Albion. While McCann felt that the first half was not up to Rovers’ usual standard, he was quick to praise his team’s performance in the second period. “It’s a frustrating day and we’ll have to move on quickly and look forward to the FA Cup game,” he said. “I thought Burton Albion were better than us in the first half. They had more control and energy than us, they picked the second balls up and they played quicker than us, but the response from the boys in the second half was
(Brentford’s second) an amazing goal. That’s why a lot of their players in this window look like they might go. “We didn’t take our chances and they did. “I expected Semi to hit the target from there. No one misses on purpose and I’m not criticising him but you have to take your chances at this level. For us to win football matches we have to take chances and it doesn’t come a lot easier than that. I think, although we didn’t start the game well we created enough chances. Robbo had a header at the far post and we could have come in at half-time at 3-1. “We were playing quite well at 2-2. I honestly believed they would go on to win the game. We had to change a couple of players to give ourselves the best possible chance. We’re a little bit down on numbers but that’s no excuse. It’s just a hard pill to take because we definitely created enough chances to win the game.”
outstanding. “To show that drive and determination to get back into it, that’s what you need to be a top six team.” McCann made a double substitution at the break, introducing Alfie May and Tyler Smith. The latter very nearly had a dream debut when his brace looked to have secured three points for Rovers before Burton grabbed a late equaliser. “Alfie May and Tyler Smith’s introduction at half time got us back in the game and almost won it for us,” McCann added. “Tyler is a very good player, very sharp. We knew he could get on the shoulder and get in behind teams and he showed that. “His first goal is a poacher’s finish from a great cross by Danny Andrew and the second one is a great pass and a cool finish. I was really pleased for him to make an impact like that on his debut. Sheffield United have got a star on their hands.”
JERRY READY TO GRAB CHAMPIONSHIP CHANCE
Rotherham United striker Jerry Yates has vowed to do all he can to grasp his latest Championship opportunity after being recalled from his loan spell at Carlisle United. The academy graduate impressed this season during his temporary stint with the League Two outfit, after helping spearhead their rise into Play-off reckoning. Yates was forced to play a role for the team in his early outings at Brunton Park, often used as a wide player under then-boss John Sheridan. But a switch to a central striker just prior to the conclusion of his stay resulted in a glut of goals, and the youngster is keen now to continue his recent momentum with the Millers. “It was good to get out and get the experience,” he told www.themillers.co.uk “It was tough at first because I was playing out wide on the left, which is a position I have had to learn. It is different to playing through the middle, but it was a job I was happy to do for the team and to get some vital experience. Once I was switched down the middle I really enjoyed it, playing games and scoring goals, it was good for me. Now I’m back I am relishing the prospect of trying to break into the team, and looking forward to the challenge.” In his last four outings for the Cumbrians, Yates plundered five goals to take his overall tally to seven. After a striker shortage at his parent club, Yates’ prolific stint did not go unnoticed by boss Paul Warne who promptly recalled the 22-year-old before thrusting him back into the Championship limelight, by bringing him off the bench against Ipswich Town last weekend. The cameo at Portman Road wasn’t his first taste of football in the second tier, after starring

He added: “The first-half wasn’t like us and we’re normally very quick with our play, we improved a lot after that. “We were all gutted at the end but the important thing now is that we work hard to win our next game.”
Tyler Smith was delighted to open his Rovers account in the 2-2 draw with Burton Albion in Sky Bet League One. The 20-year-old came on as a half-time substitute and netted twice on his debut for the club, after signing on loan from Sheffield United. He said: “I’m over the moon with my goals, I’ve come here to help the team and score as many as I can. “I took a chance for the first one and managed to get a header in, for the second I knew I needed to stay composed.

for the Millers in difficult circumstances during the 2016/17 relegation campaign. Despite the team struggles, Yates netted in the 2-1 victory over Norwich as part of 21 appearances, mainly from the bench, in what was a breakthrough year. Last season it was largely agreed that Yates’ impact alongside David Ball started the surge which brought about promotion to The Championship, with Yates further enhancing his EFL reputation this season with some impressive displays at Carlisle. Now back at the AESSEAL New York Stadium, Yates admits he’ll have to step up his game as he looks to adapt to the pace of Championship football again. “It is good to be back,” he added. “Obviously I am now operating at a much higher level so I need to step my game up again, but I am looking forward to the challenge. It is good to hear that what I’ve done at Carlisle has been noticed, and it is nice to see the manager put his trust in me by bringing me on last weekend. “It was frustrating not to get goals at first, but once the first one went in it came back naturally to me. It was a good spell for me, and now my aim is to try and bring that form to Rotherham. “It was good to be playing consistently, and just through playing I felt a lot stronger and quicker. It was a good spell for me, and I have learned to read the game much better as well. It was just what I needed. Now I’m back, I want to keep progressing. I need to get my head down now and try and get in and help the team here. Whatever the gaffer needs me to do, I’ll do it.”

PLAY ON THE FRONT FOOT A Steve Agnew revealed his pre-match instruction for the Owls to ‘play on the front foot’ against Wigan on Saturday. Wednesday won 1-0 courtesy of Steven Fletcher’s second half goal but could comfortably have added to the tally such was their dominance. But caretaker manager Agnew was content with the three points and number of chances created. He told swfc.co.uk: “The time to be concerned is when we don’t create anything in front of goal but we did that today. “Of course, you want
to score as many goals as possible but in some games it only takes the one goal and we got that today. “We stressed to the players before the game to play on the front foot and make things happen in the final third. “We went a little bit long up to Fletch in the first half but played it better in the second half and made some good chances. “Wigan defended well, their goalkeeper made some good saves, but overall I am very pleased to get the win, and that’s two in a week after the disappointing performance at Hull.”
Wednesday now prepare for the FA Cup trip to Premier League Chelsea next Sunday and Agnew reiterated the determination to put on a good show in the capital. He added: “I don’t like phrases such as ‘free hit’ or ‘a good day out’ as we will be going down there doing our best to win a football match. “We will have 6,000 supporters at Stamford Bridge, we will be going all out to give those fantastic fans something to shout about. “The preparations start now and we are all really looking forward to the challenge.”
BIG TEST FOR US
Adam Reach is under no illusions about the difficulty of Sunday’s FA Cup fourth round tie. Wednesday could hardly have been handed a tougher test than a trip to the cup holders. Chelsea defeated Manchester United 1-0 at Wembley last May to lift the famous silverware. So far the Blues have defended their trophy by defeating Nottingham Forest 2-0 at Stamford Bridge in round three. But with Wednesday reinvigorated by back to back wins over Luton in the cup and Wigan in the Championship, Reach said:
“We knew we needed to respond after the Hull game and that’s what we have done. “We’ve got the win and now we can focus on Sunday’s cup-tie and quietly go about our work. “It will be a good game and a chance for us to test ourselves against good players. “If we can go there and put in a good performance that will give us confidence and stand us in good stead for the coming league games. “But we know it will be tough, though I’d like to think they will respect us and field a pretty
strong side because it’s an opportunity for silverware for them also, so we are looking forward.” With almost 6,000 Wednesdayites set to head to the capital and the game live on the BBC, Reach added: “We’ll go there with a gameplan, we know there will be moments in the game where it will be backs to the walls because they’ll have a lot of possession. “We’ll need to be ruthless and if we get a chance we’ll have to take it.”
WE GO THERE TO PERFORM Sheffield Wednesday confirmed early on Monday morning that tickets for the FA Cup fourth round trip to Chelsea have sold out. The Owls head to the cup holders on Sunday evening and will be backed by almost 6,000 Wednesdayites at Stamford Bridge. Following Wednesday’s 1-0 win over Wigan on Saturday, caretaker manager Steve Agnew looked ahead to the clash

with the Blues and said: “I never like using the word free hit because I have seen so many cup upsets over the years. “We know how difficult the game is going to be but at the same time we have got some good players. “We have got players who have played on the big stage, who are more than capable of certainly testing Chelsea. “We’ll prepare and go down there and I don’t use the word enjoy,
because I want us to put a performance on for a big travelling support. “Of course against a Chelsea you are going to need a bit of luck at some point but we are all looking forward to it. “The noise of the travelling supporters in London will be something the players react to and we want to give them something back. “You just never know in the FA Cup.”

DISAPPOINTED WILDER RUES MISSED CHANCES JACK AFTER SWANSEA LOSS Chris Wilder acknowledged his side had missed a big opportunity to register a fifth straight league win, following defeat against Swansea City in Wales. Oli McBurnie’s second-half strike settled the contest in the favour of the Swans at the Liberty Stadium, but Wilder was left ruing missed opportunities in the first 45 minutes. He remarked: “I’ve said to the players, all these Championship games are really tight, usually they are 50/50 or 55/45, that’s not been a tight game. “A negative was our start to the secondhalf, we turned possession over too easy, but we should be 2-0 up at half-time. “They found that bit of quality to win the
game, a give and go and McBurnie scores, but we got in that position a dozen times and haven’t found that final pass, they did. “We kept going and kept going, the attitude was great, it’s just that bit of quality, we changed our shape and went for it and I’m happy that if we lose a game we go out of the front door.
“But that’s another game, out of the eight defeats, taking the Middlesbrough game out of it, that we’ve been in and that’s not through rose tinted glasses. Wilder continued: “No disrespect to Swansea, but the result was lost in our changing room, but maybe not won in theirs.
“This was never going to be an easy game, one where we just turned up and rolled these over, but for me it wasn’t a close game, “We’ve lost a game through not being clinical enough, we shouldn’t have been chasing the game, we should have been seeing it out.”
Jack O’Connell admitted Saturday’s reversal at Swansea City represented a missed opportunity for the Blades. Speaking after Oli McBurnie’s strike settled the contest in Wales, O’Connell conceded a slow start to the second-half was decisive. He remarked: “It’s another one that is tough to take. Swansea isn’t an easy place to get a result, but if we’d taken those chances in the first-half it would have been a completely different game. “We had a sloppy start
to the second-half and they managed to get a goal, we’re disappointed to concede after three clean sheets, but we’ll look to put that right against Norwich.” The influential defender added: “We knew it would be a tight game and the Gaffer said at half-time that the first goal wins the game, that poor ten minutes proved costly. “We have to take care of business ourselves, we knew the other scores kicking off later, but unfortunately we couldn’t take advantage.”
CRANIE REMAINS AT THE LANE
Blades this season, in away games at Nottingham Forest and Wigan Athletic, acting as an able deputy for the suspended Chris Basham in the victory at the DW Stadium on New Year’s Day. Boss Chris Wilder has nothing but praise for the former Huddersfield and Barnsley man, he remarked: “Martin is an excellent professional and has been a valuable member of the squad this season. “He’s zero maintenance, he just comes in and works hard and when called upon, he’s been ready and let no-one down.”
Experienced defender Martin Cranie will remain a Blade for the rest of the current campaign, after signing a contract extension. The 32-year-old has proved to be a valuable member of the squad, having signed a short-term deal at Bramall Lane at the end of the summer transfer window, following his release by Middlesbrough. Cranie has made two league starts for the
