DONCASTER WINS THE RIGHT TO HOST RUGBY LEAGUE WC Doncaster has been successful in its bid to host three fixtures of the Rugby League World Cup 2021 and bring top class international rugby league to South Yorkshire. Following an intensive yearlong ‘Back the Bid’ campaign to secure the fixtures, Doncaster will be one of the venues selected following a highly competitive bidding process. Councillor Nigel Ball, Cabinet Member for Public Health, Leisure and Culture, said: “This is a fantastic achievement to bring a

global event right here to Doncaster. “An enormous amount of work has gone in to securing the bid and it’s fantastic that the ‘Back the Bid’ campaign has been successful. We’re delighted to have been chosen and now the preparations begin as we get ready to welcome international quality sports people and thousands of spectators. “The public are going to see a tough, fast-paced sport at close quarters and I’m confident this will fire the imaginations of local youngsters in to taking up the game.”

Chief Executive of the Rugby League World Cup 2021, Jon Dutton paid special praise to Doncaster’s application, explaining what made it successful. He said: “Doncaster put together one of the most engaging ‘Back the Bid’ campaigns of anywhere in the country. It was great to see such a fantastic bid get a fittingly impressive and dynamic campaign behind it. “Doncaster narrowly missed out on being part of the 2013 tournament, so it is pleasing that their hard work and endeavour presents them with not

only three men’s games but also the opportunity to engage in our InspirationALL legacy programme in a deep and meaningful way.” The tournament itself is anticipated to be the biggest and best world cup ever and commences in October 2021. The four week event promises to bring global rugby league superstars to these shores with English icons such as Sam Tomkins, the Burgess brothers Tom and George - and Yorkshire-born John Bateman all expected to feature. Reigning Rugby League

World Cup holders Australia will likely call upon the likes of Valentine Holmes, Luke Keary and Latrell Mitchell to help defend their title while Shaun Johnson, Kodi Nikorima and Dallin WateneZelezniak should feature for a strong New Zealand outfit. Pacific heavyweights Fiji, Samoa and Tonga have qualified, as have emerging nations Lebanon, Papua New Guinea and Jamaica. For more information please go to www. rlwc2021.com

SHEFFIELD TO HOST THE TEAM UK INVICTUS GAMES TRIALS Sheffield will hold the first ever national games for wounded, injured and sick veterans and personnel; “Team UK Invictus Games Trials 2019. The first ever national games for wounded, injured and sick veterans and personnel was launched yesterday in Sheffield by the UK partnership consisting of the Ministry of Defence, Help for Heroes and The Royal British Legion. The plans were announced last week

with a visit to Sheffield’s Winter Garden by Defence Secretary Gavin Williamson welcomed by leaders from Sheffield Council. Building on the success of Sydney and maintaining the strong association with the Invictus Games, a series of events and sporting activities will take place at a multi-day event in Sheffield between the 22-26 July 2019. The games will provide opportunities for up to 500 individuals and their families to use the power

of sport, teamwork and competition to significantly accelerate their recovery. Participants will be able to take advantage of Sheffield’s world class sporting facilities and venues and take part in adaptive sports including athletics, wheelchair basketball, powerlifting, swimming and sitting volleyball. The general public are encouraged to get involved and witness competitors displaying the ‘unconquered spirit’ that was showcased in Sydney last autumn.

The event in Sheffield will also incorporate Team UK’s Trials for the next Invictus Games in The Hague, Netherlands in May 2020. Veterans and currently serving personnel who are wounded, injured or sick can register to compete at the games by contacting Help for Heroes – http://h4hweb. com/jointeamuk. At Sydney Team UK won 72 medals and recorded 138 Personal Bests competing against 17 other nations with

a team of 72 athletes. They were supported by over 200 friends and family and thousands of spectators. The Invictus Games were created by Prince Harry, Duke of Sussex, the first Invictus Games took place in London and has been followed by events in Orlando, Toronto and Sydney. Chris Allsop, a former Royal Engineer and triathlete from Sheffield said: “My goal is the Invictus Games. This is the first small step on that journey, with the Sheffield Games being the first big one. It’s in my home city so try stopping me from going!”

THIS WEEK In the News

My wife is threatening to leave me because of my obsession with wearing different clothes every half an hour. I said, “Wait, I can change.” My wife thinks I don’t give her enough privacy. At least that’s what she said in her diary. Whenever I’m in trouble, I think, ‘what would Jesus do?’ So I pretend to be dead and disappear for 3 days. I broke my finger last week. On the other hand, I’m okay. I went into my local bookstore and asked for a book on turtles. “Hardback?” The assistant asked. “Yes” I replied, “with little heads” I signed up for some aerobics classes and was told to wear loose fitting clothing! If I had any loose fitting clothing, I wouldn’t have signed up in the first place!! When I was a kid, my parents would always say “Excuse my french” after a swear word... ...I’ll never forget that first day at school when the teacher asked did we know any french. A friend of mine was having trouble naming her twin boys, she asked for my opinion so I advised her to go with what her gut was telling her. She went with Egg and Chips. I’ve never seen the inside of my ears... But I’ve heard good things. I just bought some counterfeit Mr Kipling cakes. I must say they’re exceedingly good fakes. A man goes to the doctor for a physical. He tells the doctor not to be alarmed, but he has 5 penises. Doctor: “5 penises? How do your trousers fit?” Man: “Fits like a glove.”

ANSWERS ON PAGE 2

Catfish and The Bottlemen’s third album will be titled The Balance, set for release on Friday 26 April 2019. In a rush of confirmations following the successful release of new single, Longshot, earlier this month, it’s now known that the new album release will be closely followed by a run of live shows across UK and Europe this Spring. The newly announced arena dates throughout the UK will offer disappointed fans, who missed out on their imminent and SOLD OUT arena dates this February, another chance to score tickets. The Sheffield show at the FlyDSA Arena on the 7th May will be their first visit to the venue with tickets going on sale Friday 1st February at 10am. The guarded four-piece remained tight-lipped during the recording sessions for their new album, but now offer further insights into the new material set to soundtrack their journey onto yet bigger stages. In the breaks between electrifying outdoor and festival shows in 2018, Van McCann (vocals, guitars), Johnny Bond (guitars), Robert ‘Bob’ Hall (drums) and Benji Blakeway (bass) retreated with Irish producer, Jacknife Lee, to carefully craft The Balance over a 12-month period. Recorded in seclusion at two locations: Grouse Lodge, in Moate, Republic of Ireland, and The Chapel in the countryside of East Lincolnshire, the band lived and breathed the album while residing together in rural isolation. The album was mixed by Craig Silvey.

“We loved living in the same place,” says McCann. “We were staying there the whole time, so we were waking up around each other and working until we needed to go to bed. Jacknife was always up. He was the first up and the last awake. It’s good when you’re completely engulfed in recording in a place like that, living together, because every day and all day it was about the songs. We had fun too; they were the funniest album sessions we’ve done. Further to the album name and familiar, one-word song titling, the creative bridge between 2014’s platinum-certified debut, The Balcony and its gold follow up, The Ride, has been reinforced by Catfish returning to San Francisco-based, graphic artist, Tim Lahan to provide cover artwork for a third time. The playful, monochromatic line drawing of a drinking toucan provides observers with no shortage of mystery to unravel as to the artwork’s inspirations and significance. Practically of no fixed abode due to constant touring, the band remains locked onto the intense shared live experience as theirs and their fans’ natural domain. Their debut FlyDSA Arena gig will be on Tuesday 7th May 2019. Tickets, priced £31.92 & £26.32 (including booking fee) go on general sale Friday 1st February 10am from www. flydsaarena.co.uk, ticket hotline 0114 256 56 56 or in person from the Sheffield City Hall Box Office.

NATIONAL YOUNG CARERS’ DAY 2019 As part of their #CareForMeToo campaign, this year’s focus is mental health and, with an estimated 7,300 young carers in Sheffield alone, local charity Sheffield Young Carers (SYC) is urging the city to recognise the serious impact that caring can have on a child or young person’s mental health. Last year 58% of young carers supported by the charity were caring for a family member with mental ill health. And national statistics show that mental health problems are worryingly prevalent among young carers too. According to a Carers Trust survey[1], 48% said that being a young carer made them feel stressed. Another survey[2] revealed that 38% of school-age young carers had mental health problems of their own and, according to another Carers Trust statistic[3], this percentage rises with age: 45% of young adult carers aged between 16 and 25 report mental health problems. Caring for someone who is ill or disabled can be extremely challenging for anyone, let alone for a child or young person. That’s why Sheffield Young Carers are working tirelessly to identify every young carer in Sheffield and to raise awareness of the many issues facing them – not least the impacts on their own mental and

physical health. Sheffield Young Carers also offer practical and emotional support to young carers like Jenny. “I’m Jenny and I’m 12 years old. I started to care for my mum when I was five years old. She has back problems so I do the washing, lifting, cooking and sometimes I help her put her socks or shoes on. It’s hard for me because I am an only child and I only have my dad to help with caring for my mum. Compared to those who don’t have caring roles, I hardly get a break away from my caring and hardly get out at weekends. I don’t have a high social status with friends and I have been so mentally stressed that I’ve become physically ill. With support from Sheffield Young Carers I’m much more confident now and I have made new friends for life.” But it’s not just Jenny who has benefited. Here are just a few things young carers have said following support from Sheffield Young Carers: ‘I’m doing more things, [I have] people to talk to and I am more confident [which has] helped with anxiety.’ ‘[I now] understand more about mental health.’ ‘[I have] overcome my anxiety [and I am] more confident around other people, more

comfortable with my feelings.’ Being a young carer clearly isn’t easy. But the good news is that you can help. If you would like to make a donation to support Sheffield Young Carers, visit www.sheffieldyoungcarers.org.uk or text SYCP20 followed by £3, £5 or £10 to 70070 today. Every gift, no matter how small, will help Sheffield Young Carers to continue supporting young carers all over the city. If you are an education or healthcare professional, visit www. sheffieldyoungcarers.org.uk to find out how you can help Sheffield Young Carers to identify and support young carers in your area. Help to make life that little bit easier for them by signing Louise Haigh MP’s petition for free transport for young carers today: www.sheffieldyoungcarers.org.uk/news/ sign-our-petition (You will be helping them to undertake their caring responsibilities more easily, carry on with their education, training or employment, and potentially enjoy a social life – which young carers often miss out on.)Or to simply find out more about Sheffield Young Carers and to sign up to their regular e-newsletter, visit www.sheffieldyoungcarers.org.uk

MIGRAINE SUPPORT Thousands of people from Yorkshire and Humber who get migraine have sought help from the Migraine Trust over the last year. Many have had questions about the condition and the treatment available, and high numbers have reported feeling lonely and isolated because of the condition. Explaining how migraine affects her social life, one sufferer said: “I can’t get out of the house and participate in group events, training or social events where regular attendance is needed as I can’t predict when I’m going to have a migraine. I hate cancelling so it is easier to just not plan anything in the first place.” The charity

0114 243 3933 is encouraging migraine sufferers from Yorkshire and Humber to invite their friends and family to their home for a small gathering to combat their isolation. Emphasising how this can be a low-key event, Wendy Thomas, Chief Executive, says: “People with migraine often decline social invitations because they are concerned that they will get a migraine. This can leave them feeling lonely and isolated. A good way to combat this is to have those that you are close to come to you. They will understand if you have to cancel because you get a migraine. “You can invite them for tea and biscuits or whatever you like, as the main thing is to take that important step in overcoming your isolation.”

Thinking about Quitting? Read Magdalena’s Smokefree success story Magdalena started smoking around the age of 16-17 years old following pressure and influence of friends to join in with them, a few cigarettes a day slowly crept up and before she knew it Magdalena was smoking up to 15 cigarettes per day. After 20 years of smoking Magdalena decided now was the right time to stop smoking for the sake of her health and the health of her children. She registered on the quit programme and received support for 12 weeks with Yorkshire Smokefree based in Sheffield Moor Market. Magdalena said the support she has received has been 10 out of 10, the staff were excellent and very helpful in sup-

9

port her with her quit and advising her on which Nicotine Replacement Therapy products would be best suited to her. Magdalena said her children are really proud of the fact she has stopped smoking for good and she feels a great sense of achievement that she has been able to stop smoking not only for herself but also for her children and since stopping Magdalena has been able to spend more on her family with the money she has saved ! Magdalena recommends anyone thinking about stopping smoking gets the support of Yorkshire smokefree just like she did. Why not contact the service on 0114 2316149 and join in Magdalena’s smokefree success.

Most have experienced it. A doctor says you need some blood tests and a half a dozen stabs and prods later – sometimes more – the doctor has your blood sample and the patient has a sore arm that resembles a pincushion. Many healthcare institutions such as GP surgeries and hospitals now employ phlebotomists to perform the role of collecting blood from their in-patients and out-patients. Skilled phlebotomists – the healthcare professionals who take your blood – are the experts who have been gradually replacing nurses and doctors and who specialise in just collecting blood samples. Phlebotomy posts are usually very flexible and can vary from full and part-time hospital posts to part time work in surgeries and clinics. Geopace Training has built a nationwide reputation for teaching phlebotomy the right way and Geopace tutors travel from across country and even internationally to be train phlebotomy students. Each Geopace class lasts two full days and at the end of the course students will have attained an accredited certificate in phlebotomy. Students need no prior experience in healthcare and come from all walks of life and all ages. The Introduction to Phlebotomy Course provides a very thorough grounding in both theory and practical elements and prepares students up to the point of ‘live blood draws’. “It’s also a lot of fun” says Amy, admin manager at Geopace Training. “Many students email us after completing the course to say how enjoyable it was whilst others email us to let us know that they have been accepted for phlebotomy jobs”. Geopace instructors are some of the most elite in the industry and the training programme is constantly updated to keep up with new developments and changes, so students receive the most current information and training available. Students attending the course are very hands-on, practicing on artificial arms which pump fake blood, with a choice of veins to perform and practise on. There is also a theory element to complete although there are no exams at the end. Students complete modules as they process through the course and it’s almost impossible for anyone to fail. Once completed the course awards a nationally recognised and accredited certificate in phlebotomy (accredited at Level 5 in Ireland).

300 CARS STOLEN EVERY DAY IN 2018 One vehicle was stolen every five minutes in 2018 – in figures labelled “very depressing” by the RAC. Official data released by the Home Office shows the number of thefts has all but doubled over the last five years, with almost 120,000 vehicles reported stolen last year. And the situation for the new financial year already appears bleak, with nearly 60,000 vehicles reported stolen up to the end of last September. The figures are particularly poignant in light of recent reports that

thieves are increasingly using technology to bypass entry systems on keyless cars. Four of the five best-selling models in the UK are thought to be susceptible to ‘keyless theft’, according to recent research from Which? Figures for the financial year 2013-14 uncovered a total of 75,308 stolen vehicles – a figure which increased to 111,999 in 2017-18. A further 106,210 vehicles were either stolen or ‘taken without authorisation’ over the period – up by 43% – while 5,789 fell under the

category of ‘aggravated vehicle taking’. RAC Insurance director Mark Godfrey said: “These figures show a very alarming 49% increase in vehicle thefts in just five years. In 2018, nearly 120,000 thefts were reported, the equivalent of one being stolen every five minutes or 300 a day. “They also paint a very depressing picture of a society where it is all too easy for gangs of thieves to break in and steal vehicles, and where there are fewer police officers to catch them and bring

them to justice,” he points out. “From 2013 to 2018 we lost 5,975 police officers, but looking further back to 2006 the story is even worse with 21,958 fewer officers which represents a 15% reduction.” The Home Office figures also show a total 280,032 instance of thefts from vehicles – an 8% year-onyear increase, but slightly down on the 285,047 recorded back in 2012-13. They come after policing minister, Nick Hurd, announced a new taskforce to tackle vehicle theft. The taskforce includes representatives from the National Police Chiefs’ Council, the SMMT, Thatcham Research, Retail Motor Industry, Motorcycle Industry Association and the Association of British Insurers. The RAC’s Mr Godfrey added: “Every vehicle stolen and not returned safely to its owner represents a cost that is borne by every motorist who lawfully pays their insurance. If the number of thefts could be reduced, then insurance premiums would undoubtedly be lower. “Aside from this it is impossible to underestimate the impact on individuals and business who suffer from this type of crime.”

ANGLER’S CORNER

with Clint Walker

I’ve had the pleasure of some company on my latest trip, and as I usually fish alone, preferring the peace and solitude, it made a welcome change! I was contacted a few weeks ago by Bethan SedgewickMiles, an angler who had last deadbaited for pike around ten years ago and wondered if I would mind her accompanying me to see how I approach my sessions. Bethan is a regular angler, with frequent light lure sessions under her belt on a variety of local venues but was interested in returning to a more static method which would hopefully produce a bigger fish; with a personal best pike of almost twenty pounds, Bethan had handled decent pike in the past, but asked for a refresher to brush up her confidence. It’s a wise decision to ask as I see many pike on the receiving end of poor treatment from poor anglers, so we arranged a visit to a local water on the Fenton and District Angling Club card to see what happened… The water is a tricky one to find, with the nearest postcode actually being the car park of Stoke City Football club, (which let’s face it, isn’t somewhere you’re likely to win many trophies) so after a few more directions, we met at the bankside and had a quick look at the water. I’d chosen the pool as it was fairly small, with some sizeable known fish residing within, and because I was reasonably confident of at least one bite for Bethan. I’d chosen not to fish, instead preferring to sit back, watch and advise as requested, so we picked our spot and got started. I wanted to emphasise my consideration for fish care, so before any baits went in, we discussed the use of a soft walled cradle to prevent any fish sliding off, which was added to by unzipping another mat and placing it inside. I use the zip mat when travelling light, but when time and barrow permit, I enhance the protection by using both together. Next, we talked about tools, and I was delighted to see that Bethan was well prepared. As a former nurse, the sheer variety of forceps, pliers and cutters available in her tidy tool roll was incredible, and we talked about each in turn. In truth, Bethan had so many options that open heart surgery could have been achieved on the bank, but I’d rather see that than just a single pair of (easily misplaced) forceps; you can never have too many unhooking tools, and they are vitally important!

COUNTY SENIOR FOOTBALL with Michael Clarke

It was a busy fixture list on a wet and windy Saturday, with 16 games taking place across the County Senior League. Premier Division The big game in the Premier Division saw Frecheville, six games unbeaten in the league, travel to face league leaders North Gawber Colliery at Woolley Miners Welfare. North Gawber flexed their muscles in fine style though, as goals from Liam Marsden, Luke Marsden and Matthew Thornton gave them a 3-0 victory. North Gawber’s lead at the top remains at six points after second placed Dodworth Miners Welfare (with a game in hand) beat mid-table Jubilee Sports 2-0 at home. There was also a big game at the other end of the Premier Division, with bottom side Handsworth Parramore Reserves hosting third bottom High Green Villa. Goals from Grant Baker, Ryan Dixon and Ethan Hobson were enough to settle a five goal thriller in Handsworth’s favour and lift them off the foot of the table. Defending champions Swinton Athletic stretched their unbeaten run in all competitions to nine games, as they beat Grimethorpe Sports 3-1 at Mexborough Athletic Ground. Swinton are eight points off the pace, but with a game spare. Wombwell Main, 5-1 winners at South Kirkby Colliery last time out, were this time 9-0 winners at home against South Kirkby Colliery. Wombwell have won five out of their last six games. Penistone Church Reserves were held to a 1-1 draw at the Memorial Ground against Hepworth United. Division One AFC Dronfield followed up last weeks’ 4-1 win over second placed Ecclesfield Red Rose 1915, as they saw-off Sheffield Medics by

With our fish care sorted, we moved on to simple leger rigs, and Bethan listened attentively as I constructed a very easy rig comprising just a running lead, safety bead and semi-barbed snap tackle before showing her how to mount the bait, passing the top treble firmly through the root of the tail and explaining how it helped to keep the bait on during the cast. We also touched on just how a pike picks up the bait before turning it to swallow it head first, therefore giving the reason why the trebles are placed as far back from the head of the bait as possible. It was all simple enough stuff, but if you aren’t sure, it’s good to reconfirm… With both rods rigged similarly, a roach on one, a smelt on the other, we tightened everything up to wait for an indication. Bethan had loaded her reels with braid, so it was pinched into the indicators whilst we considered the requirement for instant notification when a pike picks up the bait. Bethan was eager to exchange ideas, which made demonstrating my methods a pleasure! As we waited, we both talked about family, work, past jobs and much more as the conversation flowed over a brew and I realised that fishing alone sometimes renders me a little blinkered in how I see other anglers… maybe I should get out more! An hour into our session, without any action, we moved the baits to different spots and Bethan set the indicators whilst I opened the rig bin to talk about pop up rigs, poly balls, balsa inserts and more. Once again, Bethan absorbed everything like a sponge, and explained that she had tried to construct her own traces by both crimp and twizzle stick but wasn’t happy with the results. I’m not keen on crimps either, believing that however good they are they still have both the potential to fail, or produce an unnecessary sharp edge, and we quickly worked out just why Bethan’s traces had failed, and soon remedied the issue; another problem solved. Whilst waiting for a bite, I put together a float leger rig, discussing several different types of float and showed Bethan just how incredibly sensitive a properly tensioned float set up can be. Twitching the line just a few millimetres produced movement of the float, and it gave Beth another ‘tool in the box’ for future pike sessions. With a brief description of the pop up rig, she now had three easy options for her next session. Bethan had spent some considerable time watching a variety of YouTube videos prior to our meet, and I think it fair to suggest that it had caused confusion, with all manner of complex paternosters, booms, uptraces, sunken floats and other rigs adding to the sheer overwhelming

the same score at Norton Playing Fields. Dronfield’s lead at the top remains at two points. Ecclesfield bounced back from last weeks’ defeat with a 3-1 home win over Sheffield Bankers. Ecclesfield have played three games less than their rivals. Musa Mohammed scored the only goal as Burngreave FC grabbed a 1-0 win away against Caribbean Sports. Burngreave sit in third, Six points behind the leaders but have played four games fewer. Fifth placed Denaby Main recorded an impressive 8-0 win over Boynton Sports at Killamarsh Juniors Football Ground. Both Andrew Lowe and Harry Steeple scored twice as Hemsworth Miners Welfare Reserves beat Millmoor Juniors 5-3 at Grange Park. Division Two Division Two Leaders Wombwell Town were once again in fine form, as they beat Worsbrough Bridge Athletic Development 5-0 at Park Road with goals from Luke Needham (2), Luke Norbury (2) and Ryan Smith. There were two seven goal thrillers in Division Two. The first came at Forge Valley School, where New Bohemians beat AFC Dronfield Reserves 4-3. The second came at the Look Local Stadium, with the hosts Stocksbridge Steels Development beating Sheffield Union 4-3. Due to a quirk of the fixture list Swinton Athletic Reserves faced Dodworth Miners Welfare Reserves for the second consecutive weekend. Last week Dodworth were 2-0 winners, but this week Swinton ran-out 2-1 winners on home soil. Goals from Jordan Kershaw, Callum Totty and Atley Jackson gave Ardsley Athletico Juniors a 3-1 home win over Thurcroft Miners Institute.

amount of information available to her, and what Bethan needed was not so much instruction, just a little clarification! It can be confusing for new pike anglers to learn what is needed and when, but as I explained, I compare it to me with a pie; if I can see it, and I’m hungry, I’ll eat it, so its just a case of putting the bait where the pike can see it, and hope that it is peckish; same thing and very simple! After a few hours of moving baits to different areas of the lake, Bethan was injecting her roach bait with oil prior to recasting when a single sharp bleep alerted me to some interest in a sardine bait dropped into open water. Bethan hadn’t heard it as she was concentrating so hard, so after a second indication, I prompted her to look at the rod tip, check whether the drop off had fallen away, and as a result, lift into the bite which was now obvious. Solid resistance saw Bethan attached to an angry fish, but after a few minutes it was netted first time and lifted to the waiting cradle. My ‘student’ wanted to unhook the pike herself, so I showed how to slip her fingers beneath the gill plate, slide them forward to the point of the jaw, and open the predator’s mouth to remove the hooks. It was a decent fish, and feisty, but within seconds, Beth had the hooks out and clear of the fish, so it was time to weigh her prize. The sling was wetted, the scales zeroed, and I guessed at 16lb; Bethan wasn’t so sure, so I was exceptionally smug when the needle settled on 15lb 14oz! After the requisite trophy picture, the pike was well rested in the net as we chatted about how long to wait before releasing it. I suggested that the pike would indicate when it was ready, so we knelt and admired the mottled camouflage, the powerhouse rear end of the ambush hunter, and noted the sensory pits on its head before the pike began to splash around ready to return to the watery depths. Dropping the edge of the net, Bethan allowed the fish to swim away, and turned to me with a huge smile on her face and gave me a big hug! I was pleased to be able to prove that simple tactics worked, and also pleased that she caught a

pristine fish during our session together… but I don’t think I was as pleased as she was! Overall, I have to admit that I enjoyed sharing my ideas with Bethan and listening to hers; it was a very pleasant way to spend the day, we enjoyed a smashing fish together, and I’ve learned plenty from it too. Angling isn’t always about catching fish, sometimes it can be just as much fun to bounce ideas off someone else and share a great capture with them. Although I didn’t fish, I enjoyed Bethan’s pike as much as any of my own, so maybe we’ll do it again sometime. I’ve already been asked if I’ll consider taking another angler pike fishing, and after my day with Bethan, I don’t think I’ll turn it down! If you are an experienced pike angler, then I would recommend taking someone who may ask for guidance; you might be surprised just how satisfying it can be, and you’ll certainly be helping them to gain confidence, improve their knowledge, and most importantly, look after the pike properly… Thanks Bethan!

MICHAEL ENJOYING THE CHAMPIONSHIP BATTLE

a handful for some classy Championship defensive operators, in the first half of the campaign. The former Swindon Town and Portsmouth striker has also chipped in with some vital goals, during the current campaign – with his goals contributing significantly to the Millers current points haul. Decisive strikes in the home victories over Ipswich and Preston, aligned with goals on the road, during the draws with Blackburn, Preston and local rivals Sheffield Wednesday have helped Warne’s side keep their heads above the Championship relegation zone. However, after some impressive performances on the road recently yielded no points, Smith was quick to bemoan the fact that his side are not sat more comfortably in the Championship standings, as the Millers hopes of climbing the table have been undermined by their inability to turn a number of draws into victories. “We know we shouldn’t be anywhere near the bottom three,” Smith insisted. “Results have not gone our way in previous games, but it’s up to us to put that right on the training pitch and put that into practice on a Saturday. “We know amongst ourselves what we have got in the dressing room. We know results have not been good enough. We have drawn too many games when we should have turned those draws into victories. We have to keep working hard and I’m sure it will turn. “It’s a massive month for us. We are coming up against a lot of teams in and around us, so hopefully we will start turning those draws into wins.”

WE GAVE EVERYTHING - WARNE

Millers boss Paul Warne reflected on his side’s 2-1 defeat against Leeds United at the AESSEAL New York Stadium last weekend. Rotherham went toe-to-toe with the Championship’s leaders and took the lead through Semi Ajayi’s long-range beauty but a brace from Mateusz Klich inflicted a harsh defeat on the Millers late on. “From an effort level, I can’t ask for a lot more,” said Warne. “I thought it was quite an even first half against a very good team, there’s no disputing that. There’s a reason they’re top of the league. “I don’t think anyone came here expecting us to win, but I don’t mind being the underdog. I thought Semi took his goal really well and we had threats on set-pieces and throws and corners as well, as we always do. I thought we limited them to very few chances, first half. “Second half, they applied pressure. The first goal is hugely disappointing for us and they kept applying the pressure. I thought, even though we couldn’t get out, we defended the holes really well and limited them to hardly anything. They had the ball but we limited them to very few chances. “To concede that goal that late on was a bitter pill for the players and staff. We’ve worked hard all week, we did everything we can to make the lads as good as they can be. Unfortunately for today, it wasn’t enough.” The Millers restricted Leeds to very few

opportunities in front of goal even though the visitors enjoyed the majority of the ball, with Warne continuing, “In fairness we don’t like to let any teams play out from the back from goal-kicks so we always go full press, which is brave at times. “We did limit them to very few chances but their substitutions improved them. I don’t think Marek made many saves, although they had a lot portion of the ball – which I expected because they had 70% of the ball at Stoke last week with 10 men, so there’s no shame in it. I just think when we won it back we didn’t make the right decisions to get it up the pitch. Overall, I’m proud of the lads’ efforts. “I haven’t watched either goal back but it’s obviously disappointing to concede goals. They should take heart from their performance against a top-of-the-table team and, in fairness, they were very good. “There was some good performances but for us to win football games we need 11 players to play on tilt. “We’re playing against unbelievable teams and that’s why we want to be in this league. I think it will go down to the last game and the lads will never give up.”

with Whiteman feeling that the Rovers fans really helped him and his teammates over the line, and the match-winner is keen to see them rewarded for their support. “The fans turning out like can make a massive difference for us, they probably don’t realise just how much it helps when the atmosphere is like that. They were a factor in us getting it over the line, and hopefully we can be rewarded with a great draw,” he added. “I want Manchester United away in the next round now, I’m a big United fan, as are all of my family as well, and I played for them when Ben Whiteman felt Rovers were fully I was younger as well, a big tie against anyone deserving of their 2-1 win against Oldham would be nice, but to play at Old Trafford Athletic in the fourth round of the Emirates would be special. FA Cup. “I was with United from six-years-old through Whiteman’s double, including a last-minute to being 16. I ended up getting released and penalty, saw Rovers progress through to the then signing for Sheffield United before fifth round of the competition for the first time coming here, so that would be the dream for since 1956, and the midfielder believes the side me to play against them.” showed their quality in the latter stages. “It was a really great team performance out there, it was a proper cup tie, we knew they’d come on strong in the second half and they did just that, but we got that bit of luck with both goals and we really deserved to get the win,” he said. “We’ve probably been one of the best teams in the league this season, and I think we managed to show that in the game here too, we weren’t at our best in the first half, but we really took it to them after the break and got our reward. “This result could be a real springboard for us, we’ve been on the wrong side of some late goals recently, especially the last two games in the league, but hopefully with a late goal of our own we can kick on again.” Saturday’s win over the Latics saw an attendance of 11,260 at the Keepmoat Stadium,

He may often be the Millers lone ranger in the business areas of the pitch, but tall frontman Michael Smith would not have it any other way. The widely-travelled striker is, undoubtedly, the focal point of Rotherham’s attacking intentions, by being asked to shoulder the burden of holding up the play and bringing the midfield cavalry into the game at every opportunity. With Millers boss Paul Warne forced into employing a five-man midfield to combat the Championship’s elite, Smith has become a firm favourite with the ‘Red and White Army’ by his willingness to lead the line and occupy the attentions of Championship defenders, despite often being pulled from pillar to post while regularly being outnumbered in the final third. Smith admits unselfishly, that he is relishing the role and responsibility of being the spearhead of the Rotherham attack. “I enjoy it. It’s always going to be a scrap and a fight for every ball but I’ve enjoyed it both in League One and the Championship – although it’s obviously a lot harder at this level,” Smith insisted. “I’m getting the support from midfield in every game, so credit to the lads. We do go a bit direct, especially to me, from goal kicks, but the lads go for the second balls, which is tough, but we do not moan about it we just get it done.” Smith may have plied the vast majority of his footballing career in the bottom two divisions but the Wallsend-born striker has made a seamless transition to the demands of England’s second tier – with Smith proving

MCCANN PROUD OF ROVERS Grant McCann was proud of his players after they reached the Emirates FA Cup fifth round with a 2-1 win over Oldham Athletic. It’s been 63 years since Rovers reached the last 16 of the competition but two Ben Whiteman goals sealed their progress. McCann said: “It’s been a long time since we reached the fifth round, the same year my Dad was born and he was at the game today. “Perhaps that was a lucky omen for us, it’s a credit to the lads and it’s nice to be on the right end of a late goal. “It means everything for the football club financially, there is an incentive to be the last League One team left in the competition.” Whiteman’s second goal came after Peter Clarke had levelled the scores late on, and the Rovers manager praised Oldham’s spirit. He added: “The boys were outstanding, I thought we controlled the game for large parts

CREDIT TO THE PLAYERS WE MOVE ON TO A BIG WEEK Wednesday bowed out of the FA Cup at Chelsea and Steve Agnew had no complaints over the result or the introduction of VAR. The new technology was in place at Stamford Bridge but went against the Owls, who saw a first half penalty award overturned. Chelsea promptly scored from the spot barely a minute later, with VAR this time upholding the referee’s decision. Agnew said: “I think the penalty decisions are correct and that’s why VAR is in place. “But I thought we should have had a corner once

the penalty is overturned. I am told the referee couldn’t have given the corner, though, because once he gives the penalty, he can’t give the corner as the ball wasn’t out of play. “Chelsea scored their penalty a minute later and I’ve seen the incident and they got it right.” Despite the 3-0 scoreline, Agnew praised the players for the way in which they went about their duties against some of the finest players in the country. He said: “I have to give credit to the players, they gave everything in terms of the character,

the effort and the organisation. “We had a game plan and the players carried it out well. I think in the first half, Keiren didn’t have a shot to save. “Of course, we’d have liked to have troubled their goalkeeper but that’s easier said than done when you’re up against the quality of player that Chelsea have. “Our focus now is on Ipswich next weekend and Steve Bruce coming into the club next week, that’s what we are looking forward to.”

Wednesday’s run in the FA Cup came to an end at Chelsea on Sunday evening and for Barry Bannan, it’s now a case of taking the positives from a tough night and focus on the weekend trip to Ipswich. A strong Blues side advanced in the competition with a 3-0 win in front of the live BBC cameras to continue their defence of the cup. There were early talking points in the first half, as VAR stepped in to overturn a Wednesday penalty and just moments later, the Owls found themselves a goal behind from a Willian

spot kick. From there it proved an uphill battle against world class opposition but Bannan says Wednesday can take positives and re-focus now for Saturday’s Championship clash at Portman Road. “It was tough. We knew it was going to be tough coming here,” Bannan said. “A big changing point in the game was when we thought we had a penalty and we never got it and then they got up the pitch and scored from a penalty straight away so that kind of deflated us a bit. “But I thought as a man we stuck to our job and they are a top class team

so you’ve got to take your hat off.” “We’ll look over it through the week and take the positives and look at what we could have done better. “Then we move into a big week next weekend with the game against Ipswich now and hopefully we can get the three points there.” He added: “I think there were a lot of positives, the goals that they scored, the second one we maybe could have done a bit better but I think we did well to limit their chances today. “We will be disappointed for a day or two and then we will get over it and look forward to the game at the weekend.”

HAPPY TO BE BACK

“But I have come back now, and I hope I don’t get any more injuries between now and the end of the season. “I want to try and stay fit for the rest of the season.” Forestieri came on as a second half substitute in the defeat against the Blues at Stamford Bridge and praised the effort of his team mates. He added: “It was very difficult against Chelsea as we didn’t have a lot of the ball, but the boys tried their best and we did very well in the first half. “But we need to improve a lot because you can see the difference between the Premier League and the Championship.”

Owls forward Fernando Forestieri says he is looking forward to the rest of the season after recovering from injury in recent weeks. The Argentinian attacker played 20 minutes against Chelsea at the weekend after a long lay-off and is focused on finishing the campaign strongly. He said: “I am happy to be back playing and it was good to get 20 minutes. “It was very difficult coming back from the injury.

WILDER’S NORWICH VERDICT The Blades boss was pleased with the away point against a determined Norwich side. Chris Wilder felt his side deserved the point earnt at Carrow Road on Saturday. Speaking after United twice pegged back the Canaries in Norfolk, courtesy of a Billy Sharp brace, Wilder was more than happy to return home clutching a share of the spoils. He remarked: “It was a hard earned point and we’re delighted to get something from the game because we were playing an exceptional side. “We’ve shown great character going 1-0 behind, then 2-1 behind, some were slightly disappointed we didn’t win it, but on the balance of play,

a draw is a fair result. “We’ll take a point, we’ve been on the wrong end of some close, tight games and we didn’t want to be on the receiving end of another one. “We finished strongly, but Norwich cause all sorts of problems at the top of the pitch, with their three narrow forwards. “We lost our shape for their first goal, we came steaming out and they took full advantage and they’ve got that ability, we had to hang on at times, but we were causing them problems. “I suppose it’s the different shapes, both were open when the other team counter attacked, but after 60 minutes I really felt there was something in the game for us.

“We showed bags of character and it was a deserved equaliser, having had a few chances second-half.” The manager added: “They were better first-half, we perhaps shaded the secondhalf. “We’re talking about centre-forwards getting into the box and nobody does it better than Bill. For him to score two was

pleasing, we’ve been speaking to him about getting in the box a bit quicker and that’s 18 for the season in the league. “We had to be at a standard to have a chance to get anything, if not we’d have been punished. It was a good top end game of Championship football.”

SKIPPER SATISFIED WITH POINT Billy Sharp felt the Blades were good value for a share of the spoils at Carrow Road on Saturday. Speaking after netting a brace in Norfolk, the skipper remarked: “It was a really enjoyable game. We knew it would be tough, Norwich are a really good side, who are at the top end of the table for a reason. “I’d have certainly taken a point before the game and having been behind twice, to show the character and belief

was great for us and the fans.” On the gamesmanship from Tim Krul before slotting home the first equaliser from the penalty spot, Sharp felt it gave him an unintended edge. He added: “I’d be the same if I was a goalkeeper, it’s part of the game, but it helped me a bit to be honest. “I don’t think Tim (Krul) was focused though, I was and thankfully I managed to put the penalty away. “I’m enjoying my football, you building rhythm and confidence when you are playing consistently and I’m just trying to score the goals to help us stay at the top of the table.”

point at promotion rivals Norwich City, the Blades boss remarked: “David fully deserved it, he came on a short-term deal and he’s earnt the lift. “There are talks going on with Billy, Enda and Jack too, they all deserve to be rewarded.” Wilder added: “I’m trying to kick us on within reason, but there was some interest in David and I’m not surprised given his form this season. “I’d love them all to stop and I’d imagine the boys would want to, their careers have progressed with us.”
