DONCASTER COUNCIL LAUNCHES BEST DRESSED WINDOW COMPETITION IN THE COUNTDOWN TO TOUR DE YORKSHIRE Doncaster Council is inviting local businesses to share the Tour de Yorkshire spirit with the launch of a best dressed window competition to celebrate the major cycling event’s return to Doncaster in May. Doncaster has hosted the TDY in 2016 and 2018 and on each occasion, local people have risen to the creative challenge with eye catching yellow and blue land art, bunting and bike decorations to help welcome the world’s elite cyclists to the borough.

2019 looks set to be another exciting year as the major international cycling event is back on Thursday 2nd May when we host the start of stage 1 of the men’s race, beginning in the newly refurbished market square which will showcase the historic market to the world. Cyclists will then ride out past the Mansion House, Hallgate, Christ Church and then over St George’s Bridge on to the A19. The route then goes through Bentley, Toll Bar, Owston, Askern, Campsall and Norton.

The best dressed window competition is a fantastic opportunity for local businesses in the town centre and all along the route to get involved and showcase their shops and creative talents on a Tour de Yorkshire theme – plus there will be some great prizes in store! The competition is divided into three categories: • Best dressed business window overall • Best dressed business window town centre • Best dressed business window along the route

The entries will be considered by an independent judging panel before the winners are announced in April. Ros Jones, Mayor of Doncaster, said: “This year, for the first time we’re hosting a start which will begin in our historic market place before riding out to the north of the borough – this is a fantastic opportunity for our town centre businesses and those on the route to be part of this exhilarating event watched by an global audience and to

really go to town on making their window displays as bright and striking as possible. “Every time we’ve hosted the Tour de Yorkshire, the creative efforts of our local businesses and communities have been a pleasure to behold – and I can’t wait to see what people come up with this year.” For more information about the competition and how to get involved, please visit www. doncaster.gov.uk/tdy

Sheffield will showcase the strength and breadth of its outdoor communities with a new major UK festival, taking place in March 2019. The Festival of the Outdoors will be a month long celebration of Sheffield’s vibrant outdoor communities, promoting fun, adventure and participation for all. Organisers from across the city’s outdoor groups, clubs and businesses are coming together to offer a unique programme, which will give everyone the chance to take part in variety of events, from

climbing, mountain biking and trail running to urban caving and conservation. The Festival of the Outdoors was born out of The Outdoor City Weekender, having exploded out of the original three day event programme. Favourites from The Outdoor City Weekender will return, including the inner-city Howard Street Dual, The Magnificent Seven hill climb challenge, Rab Climbing Works International Festival, The Big Running Weekend and the 14th annual Sheffield Adventure Film Festival.

The Festival also promotes Sheffield’s unique location, with 1/3 of the city being inside the Peak District National Park, and its topography built on seven hills, making for a wealth of outdoor experiences from climbing, mountain biking, road cycling, hiking and running. Cllr Mazher Iqbal, Cabinet Member for Business and Investment said: “Sheffield has a unique proposition for outdoor recreation, so it stands to reason that city has a really strong outdoor community to go with

that. It’s the outdoor community that truly makes us The Outdoor City, so we want to celebrate that by sharing all the great events on offer and by inviting more and more people to be part of it. Whether you live in the city or you’re visitor to Sheffield, we invite you to come join us.” Marc Etches, organiser of The Magnificent Seven, said: “We’re now going into the fourth running of The Magnificent Seven and it continues to grow in popularity each year. The Weekender has always given us a valuable

platform to promote this unique cycling event and the Festival of the Outdoors can only take this to the next level, so it’s fantastic for us to be part of this. We can’t wait to see all the spectators back out on the streets of Sheffield showing their support to the riders.” In addition to the varied programme of outdoor activities the festival will also celebrate some of the fantastic cultural events taking place in March, showcasing Sheffield’s unique offer as the leading destination for both outdoor adventure and cultural vibrancy. I just heard a really great joke about owls but I think I’ll save it until 2/8/20. Just been blocked on Twitter by Gary Barlow !! Whatever I said, whatever I did, I didn’t mean it... One of my secret talents is making balloon animals. I was going to make a balloon weasel but it went pop. I failed my ventriloquist exam. I can’t say I’m surprised. I’ve just started the Adam Ant diet. Don’t chew ever, don’t chew ever. I recently got fired from my job at a computer store. A customer asked if I could suggest a hard drive and I said ‘London to Penzance in a dodgem car in the snow’. Just used my Tesco clubcard to scrape my windscreen, got 10% off. My first girlfriend worked in a hospital, every christmas and birthday she’d send me an X-ray of her chest, sounds a bit weird but it shows her heart was in the right place....

Following the incredible success of the BAFTA award-winning BBC One television series Blue Planet II, presented by Sir David Attenborough, BBC Studios, and FKP Scorpio are proud to present a 13 date UK live tour. The wonders and mysteries of the planet’s oceans and wildlife will be performed in Sheffield in the intimate theatre style setting of the FlyDSA Arena’s Steel Hall on Thursday 28th March 2019. The concert will take highlight sequences from across the series, each introduced by host Anita Rani live on stage, supported by the emotive orchestral accompaniment of the City Of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra who will be performing Hans Zimmer, Jacob Shea and David Fleming’s immersive score, conducted by Matthew Freeman. Blue Planet II – Live In Concert will transport you, via the gigantic 4K Ultra HD LED screen and through the power of music, deep underwater for two hours of drama, entertainment, stunning visuals and majestic orchestrations. Watch surfing dolphins, powerful killer whales and the beautiful clownfish in breathtaking musical sequences. The tentacles of jellyfish and octopus fill the screen while the ‘boiling sea’ Spinner Baitball sequence features a who’s who of amazing ocean predators in a wild feeding frenzy. The dramatic music brings the oceans to life as the audience are immersed in an emotional journey of glorious beauty, nail-biting tension, tranquil relaxation and profound questioning of how human action is affecting our marine families. Conductor Matthew Freeman says, “Seeing the

footage in these huge arenas on an enormous LED screen, with all that colour and those underwater worlds so closely photographed, accompanied by a 64-piece orchestra and a 16voice choir through a huge, state-of-the-art PA system, it really is a phenomenal and powerful experience. We have extraordinary visuals, heightened with music that takes the viewer to another level. It’s really quite emotional.” In addition to conducting the likes of Mozart, Rossini and Sibelius with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra at the Albert Hall, Matthew is also the Musical Supervisor of the Olivier Awardnominated musical The Rat Pack Live From Las Vegas, which has toured the world and had repeated West End success. He’s also worked as musical director for Dame Shirley Bassey and produced and arranged huge orchestral productions of work by ABBA, Queen and George Michael amongst many others.

WHAT CAN YOU RECYCLE? ALMOST ANYTHING! It’s time to recycle! We all know about putting our rubbish into our Black, blue and brown bins but we can do more. Each household produces around 1 tonne of rubbish every year! The amount of rubbish we throw away is increasing due to things like lifestyle changes and an increasing population. We need to increase the amount of rubbish that is recycled because we cannot continue to landfill or burn it forever. What can we do to reduce the amount of rubbish that we produce and increase the amount of rubbish we re-use and recycle? To increase recycling rates we need to: • Collect more materials in recycling bins, • Build more recycling plants, • Educate people about what can be recycled, • Find ways of turning recycled materials into useful items, You can find out more here: www.recycle-more.co.uk/catalogue/Whatcan-I-RecycleHere a few ideas of what you can recycle in Sheffield rather than it going into landfill. Spectacles Recycle the donated second-hand glasses for their precious metal content (gold frames) and any retro or vintage glasses are sold on our eBay shop or to specialist buyers. We also recycle plastic glasses. The income generated through the recycling process enables us to deliver sustainable eye care services in our partner countries. We do this by: • Establishing Vision Centres so that there are locally based eye care services to provide affordable eye tests and new glasses to all patients regardless of circumstance • Training local eye care workers so that there are skilled professionals in our partner countries to deliver quality eye care services at all times • Delivering eye care services to remote and isolated communities so that we can reach the poorest and most vulnerable people • Contact lenses can be recycled too • Drop them off at Boots Opticians at High street and Queens Road, Eye Eye Optician on Devonshire Street and Daybell and Choo on Sharrowvale Road

Support Barnodos children’s charity. In our charity shops, you can donate and buy: • women’s, men’s and children’s clothing • shoes, handbags, jewellery and accessories • homeware – from vases and photo frames to ornaments and tea sets • electrical goods • books, toys and games • CDs, DVDs and computer games There are many other charity shops available in Sheffield. You may also grab yourself a great bargain too. One person rubbish is another person’s treasure! Old Jewellery The Old Jewellery Appeal welcomes jewellery of any kind - whether it’s an odd cufflink or earring, or a bracelet or necklace that you no longer wear. Every single item is gratefully received, and the money raised will be used to fund projects to continue our work in changing the landscape of dementia forever. We will put it to worthy use by recycling it to raise funds for people affected by dementia. How to get started Donating your old and unwanted jewellery is a great way to help raise money for the Alzheimer’s Society. 1. Go to their website and fill out a few details to request a free jiffy bag. 2. Once it arrives pop your old and unwanted jewellery into the jiffy bag with your name and contact details 3. Pop it in the post and it will come straight to us via the freepost address! Please note, due to a very high interest in this appeal, please allow up to 2 weeks for your envelope to arrive. For more information, please contact us on 0330 333 0804 or you can email us at enquiries@alzheimers.org.uk Alternatively, you can recycle your jewellery via the following address, but please include your name and contact details when sending your donation, so that we can ensure your donation reaches us safely. YOUNG CARERS PETITION Louise Haigh, in partnership with local charity Sheffield Young Carers, has submitted a petition to the Council calling for young carers in Sheffield to be given a free bus pass. The petition explains that giving young carers a free travel pass will allow them to undertake their caring responsibilities more easily, as well as carry on with their education, training or employment. There are an estimated 7,300 young carers under the age of 18 in Sheffield. The average age of a young carer is just 12, with many providing care from a much younger age. These children and young people provide unpaid care for family members who have a long-term

Many people with disabilities already qualify for free public transport within Sheffield but those caring for them do not, and young carers under the age of 16 are not eligible to receive Carer’s Allowance. These young people save the Government billions of pounds each year. Young carers have to travel more than their peers, to do the shopping, accompany their family to medical appointments and to take their siblings to places including school if their parents can’t. Alongside their caring responsibilities, young carers also use public transport to travel to school, college, university or work and to socialise.

Sheffield has been highly commended in the 'Best Overall Scheme' category at this year's prestigious 'National Best Bar None Awards'. The Awards took place at a special parliamentary reception at the House of Lords on Monday 4th February. Backed by the Home Office, Best Bar None has been working collaboratively with the alcohol industry, local authorities and the police for over 15 years. It promotes responsible drinking and higher professional licensing standards in bars, pubs, hotels, clubs and entertainment venues in over 70 towns and cities across the UK. The National Awards are the highlight of the Best Bar None calendar. The competition carries a prize fund of over £5,000 split across three categories: • 'Best Overall Scheme', presented to the scheme that has had the biggest impact on the local area (£3,000) • 'Most Innovative Scheme', awarded to the most creative concept or initiative introduced to make a difference in the local area (£1,000) • 'Best New Scheme', open to any scheme that has been running for less than 18 months (£1,000) This year marks the tenth anniversary of Sheffield's Best Bar None scheme and it has continued to expand and innovate, despite a reduction in resources. This is the second consecutive year that Sheffield has made it to the final of the National Best Bar None Awards; last year it won Most Innovative Scheme, and it was also in the running for Best Overall Scheme. It is one of the few schemes to actively market Best Bar None to consumers through the development of an app. As a result, the scheme is well known and respected across the city, among customers and licensees alike. Sheffield Best Bar None was also recognised by the judges for its work in widening the scope of the scheme. Efforts have been made to tackle wider issues that impact on the nighttime economy, such as vagrancy, to help ensure the city centre is a safe, vibrant place in which to live and to visit.

The scheme has also collaborated with Safe Sheffield, a University of Sheffield initiative, to produce three drug awareness videos. It also recently produced a short film to educate licensees about Ask For Angela (AFA), an initiative set up to encourage people who feel vulnerable or threatened on a night out to discreetly ask bar staff for help. Notably, it piloted AFA at Sheffield’s Pride festival, extending the boundaries of the scheme. Coordinator of the Sheffield scheme, Tracey Ford, collected a certificate on behalf of the scheme from chairman of Best Bar None, Lord Smith of Hindhead, and Stephen Carpenter,

Senior Public Affairs Manager, Pernod Ricard. National Coordinator for Best Bar None, Mick McDonnell, said: "I'd like to congratulate Sheffield Best Bar None for their achievements in this year's awards. The Best Overall Scheme category is always the most popular for entries, making it a challenging category to judge. Sheffield has a proven track record of innovation and it should be commended for the way in the way it continues to evolve and apply fresh initiatives, not just in licensed venues but at other city-wide events. I am excited to see what they will do next."

TRAMLINES FESTIVAL REVEALS PHASE 1 LINE UP Sheffield’s biggest ever party, Tramlines Festival, has announced the first wave of acts to play its 11th edition from Friday 19th – Sunday 21st July at Hillsborough Park. Headliners include Two Door Cinema Club (Friday), Courteeners (Saturday) and Nile Rodgers & Chic (Sunday), plus a slew of other top talent in the form of Manic Street Preachers, Rag’n’Bone Man, Doves , Happy Mondays, Reverend and The Makers, Miles Kane, Circa Waves, Lewis Capaldi, Shame, Peter Hook & The Light, The Rifles, Sleeper, Sea Girls, Clean Cut Kid, Sports Team, Easy Life, Everly Pregnant Brothers and dozens more. With a capacity of 30,000 and a site spanning four stages of music, a soon-to-be-announced comedy line up, an improved family friendly area and the finest street food traders, Tramlines 2019 is already shaping up to top its mammoth 10th birthday bash last year with 50% of tickets already sold out. Weekend tickets are exceptionally good value priced from £65.50 plus booking fee and are available from www.tramlines. org.uk. Tramlines grew to dizzy new heights in 2018 as it staged its biggest line up to date and for the first time was held over one greenfield site on Hillsborough Park (view the aftermovie). Staying true to its roots of showcasing genre-busting acts from the internationally acclaimed to the hottest new talent, it featured the likes of Stereophonics, Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds, Craig David, De La Soul, and Stefflon Don, alongside The Big Moon, Bang Bang Romeo, Rae Morris, Teleman and many more. Its credibility as a must-visit music festival has soared and shows no sign of descending anytime soon. Tramlines Operations Director, Timm Cleabsy commented: “Following on from the amazing party that was our tenth birthday, we’ve been working hard to make the festival even better and to find artists that we’re excited about. I think we have some great artists this year that span generations. Courteeners, Chic, Rag’n’Bone Man, The Manics, Miles Kane are all

on my must-see list and there are more to come too, including, as usual, some great Sheffield favourites and new talent. I can’t wait it’s going to be awesome and I hope everyone will join us for Sheffield’s Biggest Party.” At Tramlines 2019, crowds will be in indie, rock and disco heaven when it welcomes three heavy hitting headliners: Two Door Cinema Club, Courteeners, and Nile Rodgers & Chic. Expect crowd-pleasing tracks such as ‘What You Know’, ‘Not Nineteen Forever’ and ‘Everybody Dance’ respectively, when these acts take to the Tramlines Main Stage. Other highlight performances will come from Wales’ finest, the Manic Street Preachers with an impressive 13-albums worth of material; Rag’n’Bone Man with his unique, soulful tones that appear in a fresh new setting on latest single ‘Giant’ with Calvin Harris; the highly anticipated return of indie outfit Doves after a nine year hiatus; Madchester scene leaders, Happy Mondays; Sheffield heavyweights Reverend and The Makers; co-frontman of the Last Shadow Puppets, Miles Kane; Circa Waves who are back with third album ‘What’s It Like Over There’; Brits Critics’ Choice Award nominee Lewis Capaldi; hedonistic South-London four-piece, Shame, and Peter Hook & The Light who’ll be performing New Order’s ‘Technique’ and ‘Republic’ live plus Joy Division material. Continuing the not-to-be-missed acts at Tramlines 2019 is the Paul Weller mentored The Rifles, 90s rock band Sleeper who are set to return with their first album in almost two decades, and Sheffield’s very own Everly Pregnant Brothers who’ll bring their hilarious spoof covers. This comes alongside some of the finest UK emerging talents: the BBC Sound Of 2019 nominated Sea Girls; Liverpool four-piece Clean Cut Kid; Sports Team whose new track ‘M5’ was premiered by Annie Mac on Radio 1 only last week, and Easy Life who made it into Radio X’s Best New Bands for 2019 list. The breaking talent list continues with whenyoung,

Further announcements for all areas of the festival will be made over the coming weeks. Whilst the Tramlines line up gets bigger each year, it remains seriously good value for money. ANGLER’S CORNER

with Clint Walker

Snow and ice… it’s not the best weather for fishing, with many lakes frozen over completely, but I managed to get out just before the big freeze and throw a few lures around in search of some sport. I do enjoy fishing during the winter months, but when it gets to this time of year, it does get much harder to motivate myself to get out of a nice warm bed, put down that mug of steaming tea, and clamber into four layers of clothing just to stay reasonably warm before I even get a line wet! With that in mind, if I’m not hunkered down under an umbrella fishing deadbaits, then I’m often out doing much shorter sessions with lure kit, taking the opportunity to fish several venues during the day, and in between, returning to the van for a warm! The first venue of my session was Knypersley Reservoir, a lake of well over thirty acres, and one on which I’d never lure fished previously. I’d heard reports of good perch being taken though, so set up with a bigger lure than usual, hoping to select the bigger fish by default; smaller perch wouldn’t be able to get their face around my Polarise lure, which I intended to twitch across the bottom hoping that the ‘stand up’ action would entice a bite. I started in deeper water at the dam end and selected several swims into which I hopefully cast my tempter, but to no avail. After a couple of hours of flinging rubber, I was starting to get cold, so returned to the van. I’d changed the lure, changed the hook size, and changed the weight, but nothing had worked. A single tentative (I think!) twitch had been the only result, and I’d missed that! I got back in the van and travelled a couple of miles further down the road to a stretch of canal, parked on a side street and wandered across frozen fields to the canalside. The area I wanted to fish comprised a big turning circle

COUNTY SENIOR FOOTBALL with Michael Clarke

Sadly this past weekend saw play very much interrupted in the County Senior League. The wintry conditions led to the postponement of all but three games, all of which were Second Round ties in the Brian Bradley Memorial Trophy. Premier Division high-flyers Dodworth Miners Welfare were made to work very hard, as they overcame Ardsley Athletico Juniors of the Second Division 3-2 at

WRAGG FOOTBALL LEAGUE with A Royston

The Wragg League fixtures were decimated with only 3 games played out of the 18 scheduled. We got just one of the Ernest Walker Memorial Shield games played between Ring O Bells and Sheffield Aurora , and it was Ring O Bells who progressed to the next round with a 4-2 win with goals from Woods 2, Fawcett 2, and for Aurora Hodge grabbed a couple of goals. The other three games which should have taken place with be played next Saturday. PREMIER DIVISION Fossils FC and Elsecar Dynamoes managed to beat the weather and get ther game on. It was the home side who came out on top with a 4-1 win, Fothergill 2, Davies and Smith, this win lifts Fossils into third spot in the League over taking Wickersley who have two games in hand . DIVISION 2 The only other game to be played was between Jubilee Sports and AFC Dronfield

outside of a boatyard, and I knew it contained some good perch and reasonably sized pike, so I hoped for a better result! An hour of dropping the lures into gaps in the ice which had started to creep across the glassy surface had seen nothing either, and as the weather worsened, I reckoned I had an hour or so before the predicted snow arrived. The sky was slowly clouding over, a leaden mist closing out the weak sunshine, and I could feel the air temperature plummeting…time for another venue… brrr! Rudyard Lake has a proud history of pike fishing, but also contains a good head of perch, and in the depths of winter, they can be very obliging if you can find them. I like to fish off the floating jetties, which gives access to a good depth of water and is perfect for dropshot fishing. Twitching a lure hadn’t achieved much, but before I retied my rig, I flung out the bigger lure and spent thirty minutes hoping for a hit. It didn’t happen, so the lure was snipped off the fluorocarbon and a size 10 hook looped on, a five gram dropshot weight attached, and I picked out my current favourite dropshot lure, a tiny white worm from the Rapture stable. I don’t know what it’s called, but I do know it works, and is usually my first choice! By now the air temperature had plunged further, the dashboard readout displaying a -3 icon, and the first flurries of snow fell from the grey, forbidding skies… I had a take almost immediately, my light rod hooping over as I lifted into a plump perch of about ten ounces, my first fish of the day, which required the net to bank it safely. It was quickly unhooked and splashed back into the water on the opposite side of the jetty, under the watchful eye of a resident swan. I explored each edge of the jetties, dropping the lure in tight to the shadows beneath the wooden boards, and picked off a number of similarly sized shoal perch which were very pleasing in the bitter conditions. I changed the lure hoping for a bigger fish, but to no avail, it was the white lure they fancied, so I changed Netherwood ALC. Dodworth will play Kiveton Park away in Round Three. Kiveton also progressed on Saturday. They drew 2-2 after 90 minutes against Division One leaders AFC Dronfield. The two sides could still not be separated after extra-time with the score at 3-3, however Kiveton won the game dramatically 4-2 on penalties. Goals from Leburn Mbeka (2) and Ali Elkossi were enough to give Burngreave FC of Division One a 3-1 away win over Division Two’ United Worksop at Manton Athletic Sports Club. with Dronfield very close to the bottom of the League and looking to improve their position, but it was Jubilee Sports who were the stronger and they were comfortable winners by 6-1, Turner 3, Spencer 2 and Cooper, Spence grabbing a consolation goal. Lets hope this weather improves and we can get more games in next week. The Top of the Premier League is still very tight with only a point seperating the top two Sheffield Academicals have 19 points, HSBC Bank have 18 points, Fossils and Wickersley on 14 and 13 points but with Wickersley having 2 games in hand. Same applies in Division 1 with the top three teams on 16, 15, 14 points so still plenty to play for. In Division 2 just a point seperating the top two, with Doncaster Over 35s on 20 points and Hollingwood Old Boys on 19 points. In 45s Division 1 Hallam 1860 Old Boys are 6 points clear of second placed Mosborough Trinity who are on 14 points. 45s Division 2 Dronfield Town are top with 16 points but have played two games more than the team in second place Denaby United who have 13 points

It doesn’t cost much from the pharmacy, and dabbed on with a cotton bud, or dribbled onto the spool, it enables you to keep fishing when it’s really cold; it’s my top tip for winter fishing and can keep you on the bank when others go home! After an hour of fairly regular hits, it started to snow harder, and with the air temperature so low, it started to freeze on my coat, my neck warmer, and my hands. I was still getting bites, but my hands were cold despite fingerless gloves and the conditions were rapidly becoming untenable. The snow blotted out the sky, and the boards were becoming slippery; the last thing I wanted to do was to fall into fifteen feet of bitterly cold water, so with common sense prevailing, I headed back to the van. A few hours across three venues had been enjoyable, and I’d caught fish when many are moaning about frozen lakes. I’d had to work

hard for them. It does show that fish can be caught in any weather however, (almost!) you just have to work a bit harder, and be prepared to change venues, but that nice warm bed and steaming mug of tea felt like a lifetime ago after I’d finished! Get out there and try it, but take care where ice is present… it won’t stand your weight, no matter how thick it looks!

MCCANN PLEASED WITH DISPLAY AT PORTSMOUTH Grant McCann felt his side stuck to their gameplan well in the 1-1 draw at Portsmouth in Sky Bet League One. Omar Bogle’s leveller cancelled out Mallik Wilks’ first-half opener to secure a share of the spoils at Fratton Park. McCann said: “I thought it was a good game,

it’s always tough coming to Fratton Park so we knew we had to stick to our game-plan. “Mallik took his goal well and it was the type of move we worked on all week, we deserved to go in at half-time in front. “We knew they would come at us in the second-half, but even after we conceded we kept on plugging away and giving everything.” McCann brought Wilks and Tyler Smith in to his front three ahead of the game, and says their pace caused Portsmouth problems. He added: “We wanted to be positive and add a bit of pace to the team, and I think that worked to a certain degree because we always looked a threat. “The pitch was slightly heavy but it was the same for both teams so I have no complaints about that, we’ve managed to force a couple of great saves from their keeper as we looked to try and win it.”

LEWIS ENJOYED ROVERS DEBUT AT PORTSMOUTH Aaron Lewis says his new Rovers teammates have really helped him to settle in to the squad as the right back make his professional debut on Saturday. Lewis was a standout performer in Rovers’ 1-1 draw at fellow promotion hopefuls Portsmouth in Sky Bet League One, and the man on loan from Swansea City felt it was an experience like no other at Fratton Park. “I really enjoyed it, and it was a great place for me to come and make my debut what with the atmosphere and 18,000 fans here, but whether it was here or back home, the team really spurred me on to do well,” he said. “I prepared how I normally would for any other game, it doesn’t make a difference whether it’s a first team game or another game, I knew I’d be ready when I was called upon and hopefully I have proved that. “I was given a good test coming up against Ronan Curtis who is one of the best players in this league, getting booked in the first half is never ideal but I felt it still didn’t really affect my game. I’ve enjoyed my day out though that’s for sure.” Rovers went in front through Mallik Wilks’ first-half effort, being pegged back by Omar Bogle’s close range finish, and Lewis felt the disappointment of coming away with just a

ASSESSING THE SQUAD AND CLIMBING THE TABLE The remaining months of the campaign are set to be a busy period for Steve Bruce, his staff and the players. With members of the squad playing for their

future at the club, the new boss says he will have a good look at everyone over the next two-three months. But while assessing the squad, the experienced

boss wants to see an upturn in results in the 17 remaining games. And to that end, it was the perfect start on Saturday with a victory and clean sheet away at

Ipswich. “I’ve said to all of them, the problem we’ve got is that I left seven players behind [on Saturday], and still travelled with 20. “There is a big squad so it’s impossible to keep 27 happy because players want to play. “But I’ve given the lads the assurance that they will get the chance. “We have got two or three months to have a really good look at the players but in the meantime, can we mount a little challenge? Can we put a run together?

Because in this division anything is possible. “But let’s not get carried away, we’ve had a good start, it’s got to be the aim of everybody at the club to finish as high as we can.” And within that squad are Bruce’s three deadline day signings, Dominic Iorfa, Rolando Aarons and Achraf Lazaar. “Big Dominic Iorfa I’ve known for a long, long time now and a couple of years ago I thought he was going to be a world beater,” Bruce said. “He is young, he’s

athletic and quick and will be a really good addition to the team and I’m delighted to have him. “I also have to thank Newcastle, they were extremely generous,” he continued. “Rolando is a winger, has got a bit of pace, gets at people and is a good player. I really like him. Discussing Lazaar, he added: “He looks a very good player. Newcastle bought him two years ago and he has not really had a look in there but he will be a good acquisition for us.”

JOAO HAILS BRUCE IMPACT

Portman Road in the last minute having entered from the bench, said: “It was amazing to help the team win and have the chance to score a goal after hard work from the team. “I’m happy to have scored the goal but the most important thing was the three points. “It is important to help the team whether you are in the first 11 or in the team. “I was lucky enough to come off the bench and get in the position to score.” Joao added: “Spirits are good because we have won an away game.

The new manager has just arrived and it was important to win to start to build something. “He wants us to work hard and run more than the other teams, which is important in this league. He wants us to show our quality when we have the ball. “He is the first English manager I have worked with. It will be a different experience and I hope he will help me grow up as a player. “I think he can help take my game to another level. I will work hard in training to become a better player.”

Saturday’s matchwinner Lucas Joao has hailed the impact of Steve Bruce following the 1-0 win at Ipswich. Bruce’s S6 stint is up and running with three points from his first game, leaving Joao and his team mates under no illusions that the maiden success is no more than just a start. DEADLINE DAY DRAMA FAN COLUMN BY CHRIS PLATTS

No sooner had Steve Bruce finished answering questions about him taking over as manager, the rumour mill of impending transfer kicked into full speed. During his press conference both Bruce and Chansiri said there was no room for manoeuvre due to Financial Fair Play (FFP) restrictions. This was an obvious ploy to keep journalists off the scent of what was happening behind the scenes. First one to officially come through the door was Dominic Iorfa from Wolverhampton Wanderers for an undisclosed fee (rumoured to be around £500k). Iorfa

spent last season on loan at Ipswich Town having been a regular in the Wolves side for the previous 3 seasons. Just before the transfer window shut Wednesday announced the loan signings of Rolando Aarons and Achraf Lazaar form Newcastle United. Aarons having previously spent time on loan at Hellas Verona and Slovan Liberec, with Lazaar having spent the majority of his career in Serie B with Varese, Palermo and Benevento respectively.

DESERVED VICTORY - WILDER Chris Wilder was delighted with the Bramall Lane victory over Bolton Wanderers. Chris Wilder was pleased to see his side keep the pressure on those above the Blades, by overcoming a stubborn Bolton Wanderers outfit. Speaking after second-half goals from David McGoldrick and Billy Sharp saw United briefly climb to second place in the Sky Bet Championship, Wilder was pleased to register a fourth straight home win in the league. He remarked: “We talked at half-time about not missing this opportunity in front of our own supporters. “We were a bit

slow and too comfy first-half, we were waiting for somebody to do something and we needed to it collectively. “We did just that in the second-half, we went through the gears and in the end we got a deserved victory. “We’ve had many battles with Bolton and some tight games, we have to expect teams to come and not just wave the white flag for us. “Teams won’t come here, roll over and have their tummies tickled. Bolton came and were compact, we weren’t quick enough and that allowed them to get behind the ball.” Wilder continued: “The first goal was always going to be key. It was a great

ball by George (Baldock) then Billy showed a different side to his game by squaring it for David McGoldrick, when 26,000 people expected him to put his foot through it. “Players have to get the balance right, we’re at the top of the division and there will be some pressure
