LOCAL EVENT SET TO HIGHLIGHT THE IMPORTANCE OF HEALTHY, ACCESSIBLE AND AFFORDABLE FOOD Food glorious food is the theme for a new initiative being hosted at Cast theatre on 13 March 2019. Organised by the Good Food Doncaster partnership and supported by Doncaster Council, the event is open to everyone with an interest in food and will explore what food production, food insecurity and nutrition is all about within the Doncaster area. Vivienne Neale, conference coordinator
for Good Food Doncaster recognises the importance of being able to access healthy and affordable food. She said: “There is much confusion around everything from what’s in our food, how much red meat we should include in our diet, food miles, nutrition and the huge disconnect some communities have with food. There is a lot happening in the Doncaster area to address topics like this and our event
has been organised to collaborate and see what we can achieve by working together. It’s no coincidence that it is running on the same day that TV doctor Michael Moseley is in town to talk about food and diet.” The Good Food Doncaster partnership has been set up to promote the concept that everyone should have access to good food and aims to bring fresh fruit and vegetables to communities instead of
them having to spend money travelling to access nutritious food. It also hopes to reduce the amount of food waste, an initiative where the Real Junk Food Project based in Cleveland Street, Doncaster is leading the way by using surplus ingredients to create fantastic food. The event will be opened by the Director of Public Health at Doncaster Council, Dr Rupert Suckling. He said: “Eating is such an everyday
experience that we’ve forgotten how important it really is. Doctors are re-learning the importance of healthy eating and that’s about how you grow, make and share food. This is a fantastic opportunity for Doncaster to reset its relationship with food by becoming closer to how and where it is produced.” Everyone with an interest in food is welcome to join the debate. For tickets please visit the Cast website or contact their box office on 01302 303 959.
