NEW SCHEME TO SUPPORT LOCAL BUSINESS AND IMPROVE DONCASTER TOWN CENTRE Doncaster shop owners can get funding to enhance the external appearance of their shops thanks to a new council initiative. Business Doncaster has launched a scheme offering matched funding of up to £1,000 to help shop owners revitalise their shop fronts and improve the look and feel of Doncaster town centre.
Cllr Bill Mordue, Cabinet Member for Business, Skills and Economic Development, said: “This new scheme will enhance the appearance of shop fronts and buildings and have a considerable impact on the character of our town centre. We want to see our shop fronts improved, particularly on our
main shopping streets, to make Doncaster more vibrant and attractive for shoppers and visitors. “This initiative will support the growth of local businesses and raise the image and profile of our town centre and wider borough. I urge tenants and landlords to contact our Business Doncaster team to see how we can help
them improve their properties.” All freehold owners and lease holders (with a minimum of three years tenancy remaining) of commercial shops and premises in the town centre which face the highway can apply. Projects can include new shop fronts, repairs, replacing original architectural features, painting, re-
rendering, re-pointing, access improvements and external signage and lighting. The scheme is open to Small or Medium Enterprises (SMEs). Grants are discretionary and subject to the availability of funds. Interested shop owners should contact the Business Doncaster team on 01302 735555 in the first instance. Advice on any required planning or advertising permissions will be provided early in the process.

DETAILS REVEALED FOR U.S. FLYPAST This Friday (22/2) Sheffield looks to the skies to see a unique flyover of US and Royal Air Force aircraft – to mark 75 years since the Mi Amigo disaster. The whole city is rallying behind Tony Foulds, who has been tending the Mi Amigo memorial for many years, with Buses for Sheffield and Stagecoach Supertram offering free travel for service personnel and veterans in honour of the occasion. Sheffield City Council is advising people to plan their journeys to Endcliffe Park carefully and in advance so they can arrive in time for the flypast on Friday 22 February, which will be broadcast live by BBC Breakfast to an
audience of millions. While final aircraft participation will be driven by weather and mission requirements, the US Airforce is anticipating a unique variety of aircraft from U.S. Air Force and Royal Air Force installations including RAF Lakenheath, RAF Mildenhall and RAF Coningsby. Due to airspace regulations, these aircraft will not fly in one combined formation together but will still put on a fantastic show of airpower in tribute to the fallen crew of the Mi Amigo. Councillor Mary Lea, cabinet member for culture, parks and leisure at Sheffield City Council, said: “This is going to be
a truly memorable day in Sheffield’s history and we are looking forward to welcoming our friends from the US to pay tribute to this remarkable crew who gave their lives so bravely during the Second World War. “Sheffield owes the Mi Amigo crew a huge debt of gratitude for their sacrifice 75 years ago. We have honoured their memory for all these years and this flypast will be a fitting tribute. It’s also a tribute to Tony who has tended the memorial for all these years. “We want as many people as possible to see the flypast and would urge them to take the following steps to ensure they have a day to remember on 22
February.” Councillors join Tony Foulds and Friends of Porter Valley at the Mi Amigo war memorial Councillors join Tony Foulds and Friends of Porter Valley at the Mi Amigo war memorial The council will be using the hashtags #turnupfortony and #sheffieldflypast on Twitter to make sure people are kept up to date in the days prior to the event. Please avoid the area if you are not planning on witnessing the flypast. It is worth checking weather forecasts and local radio announcements prior to the flypast. The flypast may not take place in extreme weather conditions.
Wear sensible footwear and bring your own seating if needed as it won’t be possible to provide seating in the park. You are advised not to bring wreaths to the Friday event but an area of the park will be able to take flowers if you choose to bring them on the day. The BBC will be broadcasting live from the park from around 6am to 9.15am on the morning of the 22 February. However, there is no need to arrive at this time. People are encouraged to arrive at the park from around 7.15am. A memorial service will take place from around 8am with the flypast set to follow at 8.45am.

Yesterday I got hit over the head with a powertool. I was sitting quietly minding my own business and then suddenly... Bosch. What do you get when you mix a motorcycle with a joke? A Yamahaha. My wife got mad at me for kicking the dropped ice cubes under the refrigerator. But now it’s all water under the fridge.

I saw an advert saying ‘Hairpieces from £5’, I thought ‘that’s a small price toupee’. I was walking past a pet shop. A sign on the shop front said ; ‘Pedigree Netherlands cats for sale.’ I didn’t believe they were from the Netherlands so I went into the shop and asked the assistant... ‘How Dutch is that moggie in the window?’. ME: “Excuse me, are these ‘genetically modified’ carrots?” GROCER: “No, why do you ask?” CARROT: “Yeah, why do you ask?”

Award-winning comedian, actor and writer Jack Whitehall has announced his biggest UK and Ireland arena tour ever for 2019 with brand new show, JACK WHITEHALL: STOOD UP. Jack will be stopping off in Sheffield at the FlyDSA Arena on Sunday 1st December 2019, which will be his third visit to the venue! Tickets, priced £22.40 - £55.44 (including booking fee) go on sale at 10am, Friday 22nd February available online at www.flydsaarena.co.uk or via the credit card hotline on 0114 256 5656. Following two complete sell out arena tours, Jack Whitehall Gets Around in 2014 and Jack Whitehall: At Large in 2017, which premiered on Netflix, JACK WHITEHALL: STOOD UP promises to be the most hilarious yet from one of comedy’s most electric talents. A joy to watch on stage and a comedian who is firmly on the road to becoming a global megastar, this show is not to be missed. Jack Whitehall said: “I couldn’t be more thrilled to be going back out on the road. There’s no feeling like standing up on stage in front of an arena full of strangers, and still being able to hear your dad heckle you.” Most recently seen in Lasse Hallstrom’s The Nutcracker And The Four Realms opposite Keira Knightley, Helen Mirren, and Morgan Freeman, Jack is also set to star in Disney’s upcoming Jungle Cruise opposite Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt, which is currently in production and will be released in 2020. Widely celebrated for his hit show, Travels With My Father (of which Season 2 premiered on Netflix in Autumn 2018), this year he will also star in Good Omens (Amazon) opposite Jon Hamm and Michael Sheen and Series 2 of Bounty Hunters opposite
Rosie Perez for Sky (UK). His television credits include: Decline & Fall (BBC), Fresh Meat (Channel 4), and Bad Education (BBC), Backchat, A League Of Their Own (which received a BAFTA Award in 2014 for ‘Best Comedy Entertainment Program’ and was nominated in the same category in 2013), Stand Up For The Week, and Live At The Apollo. In addition, Jack also filmed Training Days for Google in 2018, where he travelled the world to interview international football stars - the series was released in the lead up to the 2018 World Cup on his own YouTube channel. An established presenter, Jack has hosted a number of prestigious award ceremonies and television series, becoming the youngest ever host of the Royal Variety Performance in 2015. He will host the 2019 BRIT Awards this month, following his acclaimed hosting debut of the event in 2018, and has also hosted The British Fashion Awards in 2014, 2015, 2016, and 2017, and the BAFTA Britannia Awards in 2015, 2017, and 2018.

1306 20/02/2019 NEW CHANGES TO PROBATE FEES IN APRIL 2019 Many families who have lost a loved one could face increased fees if they don’t apply for probate before April – although those with smaller estates may be better off waiting until after the rules change. Probate fees – paid when administering someone’s estate after they die – are set to be charged as a sliding scale rather than a flat rate in England and Wales from April 2019. At the moment, families are charged a flat £215, or £155 if they apply through a solicitor, which is paid at the point of application for probate on estates over £5,000 (estates worth less than £5,000 are exempt from the fee). But the planned rule changes mean estates under £50,000 won’t pay any fees at all – while all other estates are set to see a rise in fees. Estates worth between £50,000 and £300,000 will be charged £250, and the maximum charge will be £6,000 for estates worth £2 million or more. The changes are only planned for estates in England and Wales, as Scotland and Northern Ireland have different probate fees. What is probate? When someone dies and leaves property, money and possessions – which is collectively known as their estate – the executor of the will needs to sort out who gets what. However, if there is no will, the next of kin must apply for what is known as a ‘grant of letters of administration’. Put simply, and in order, the executor’s or next of kin’s job and the process of dealing with probate involves: • Gathering any assets, eg, money left in bank accounts. • Paying any bills.
• Distributing what’s left according to the will. When will the fees be increased? The Ministry of Justice has confirmed that the fee changes are still on course to be implemented this April, although an exact date hasn’t yet been set. However, the new fees still need to be approved by the House of Commons, so in theory there could still be delays. The new fees will be charged based on when you apply for probate (not on when the estate holder died). What will I pay after April? Under the new rules, the fees will depend on the amount the estate is worth. You’ll pay the same amount whether you use a solicitor or apply independently: Estates worth less than £50,000 will pay nothing. There’s no change for estates worth less than £5,000, but estates worth between £5,000 and £50,000 will save £215 compared to the current system. In theory, those applying for probate for an estate of this size may be better off waiting until April. However, you’ll need to get the grant of probate before you can settle the estate and share out assets, so some may want to apply sooner to speed up the process – especially as the rule changes haven’t yet been approved by the House of Commons. Estates worth more than £50,000 will see an increase in fees of between £35 and £5,785. Understandably, applying for probate may be the last thing on many bereaved families’ minds. According to Government data, it takes an average of two to three months following a death for individuals or solicitors to submit their probate application, and 20% take longer than
six months. But if you’ve been putting off applying for probate, and now feel able to, doing it before April could avoid thousands extra in fees. Here’s a full breakdown of how much more you could pay after the rules change: • Estates worth from £50,000 up to £300,000 will pay £250, a rise of £35. • Estates worth from £300,000 up to £500,000 will pay £750, a rise of £535. • Estates worth from £500,000 up to £1 million will pay £2,500, a rise of £2,285. • Estates worth from £1 million up to £1.6 million will pay £4,000, a rise of £3,785. • Estates worth from £1.6 million up to £2 million will pay £5,000, a rise of £4,785. • Estates worth more than £2 million will pay £6,000, a rise of £5,785. What does the Government say? Lucy Frazer MP, Parliamentary Under-Secretary for the Ministry of Justice, submitted a written statement to Parliament when the changes were announced in November 2018. She said: “This new banded fee model represents a fair and more progressive way to pay for probate services compared to the current flat fee and reflects our commitment to protecting access to justice by ensuring we have a properly funded and resourced courts system. We are also confident these fees will never be unaffordable. The cost of the fee is recoverable from the estate and executors have several options to fund it. Moreover, the Lord Chancellor retains a power to remit a fee if he considers there are exceptional circumstances.”
TRAVEL INSURANCE TIPS TO SAVE YOUR HOLIDAY Flybmi, the UK regional airline offering flights to 25 European cities, announced that it will be ceasing all operations, blaming rising fuel costs and the uncertainty surrounding Brexit for its insolvency. The airline which has a fleet of 17 and employs 376 members of staff has said they had no choice but to file for bankruptcy. Thousands of passengers have been left stranded abroad or unable to reach their holiday destination and many more have been left out of pocket, but it is unlikely those affected will be able to claim back any compensation. It is an increasingly challenging environment for airlines with Brexit looming, and fuel prices at all-time highs. In recent years low cost airlines such as Primera Air and Monarch have disappeared, and now Flybmi, so the risk of losing your flights is very high for the UK traveller. Travel Insurance Explained has the answers on how to mitigate the risk and not lose out when these closures happen. Top tips to ensure you don’t lose out if your airline goes bust How can you protect yourself against something like this happening again in the future? What if I have booked a package holiday and my flight was cancelled? If you book your holiday as part of a package holiday you should be covered under ATOL protection. Travel agents and tour operators should offer an alternative
flight with another airline. This will be solely down to the company so be sure to check with your package provider, when buying your holiday, what the situation would be should they book you with an airline that goes bust. If I brought my airline tickets using a credit card; would I get my money back? By paying for flights with a credit or visa card you may be able to claim back the cost of any unused tickets. Under Section 75 of the Consumer Credit Act 1974 consumers should be protected, but you will need to check with your individual provider. Should I have a travel insurance policy to cover an airline going bust? It is always advisable to look for a travel insurance policy that would cover you for ‘Scheduled Airline Failure’, however it is worth noting this is not usually covered as standard therefore you may need to pay an additional premium when you purchase the policy to ensure this additional cover. In the event of your airline going bust, those with Scheduled Airline Failure who have not yet left the UK will be able to claim back the cost of the flight from their travel insurer, provided the money cannot be refunded from anywhere else. Passengers who are already abroad would be able to claim back the cost of a flight home. Even with Scheduled Airline Failure, travel insurance will not cover if the policy was purchased after the company has declared bankruptcy
or announced it would be going into liquidation, so you can’t buy a policy now to cover you for the Flybmi situation. I always book my travel independently, not through a package holiday, what should I should I do to protect myself? Booking your holiday in individual parts may save you some money, but it means you will not be protected by the Package Travel Regulations. Therefore, you would need to ensure that you bought a travel insurance policy which would offer you some extra protection, remember not all travel insurance policies are the same, some can have very limited cover. Our advice is if you are booking an independent holiday ensure you have a policy which offers the following cover: • Scheduled Airline Failure cover • Force Majeure cover • Cover for delay on your homeward journey • Cancelation for anything which you could not have been expected to foresee or avoid It is worth noting that there are only a very few insurance policies that offer cancellation cover for ‘any reason you could not have been expected to foresee or avoid’. If you have this cover, you may be able to cancel your holiday and claim back any pre-paid expenses, such as excursions, car hire costs or accommodation fees that you cannot get back from anywhere else.

online film tackles stigma around older drinkers The number of people in the UK aged 50 plus experiencing alcohol related harm is increasing. The reasons for this are complex, but one of the main barriers to older adults getting help is the stigma around alcohol use – particularly with this age group. A short film by Drink Wise, Age Well – a programme aimed at helping the over 50s make healthier choices about alcohol – looks at some of the key reasons older people drink, in a bid to generate better understanding of the tough later life realities that could lead any one of us to drink more than we should. A major study for Drink Wise, Age Well revealed that of those aged 50 plus who said they were drinking more now than in the past, retirement (40%); bereavement (26%) and loss of sense of purpose (20%) were the main reasons given. The film is centred on four characters going through key life transitions that have triggered harmful drinking. Middle-aged couple Derek and Jackie are coming to terms with life after their children have left home, while Kevin has recently retired from running his own small business and grandmother, Liz, is having the pain of losing her husband compounded by family conflict arising from her main coping mechanism
– frequent drinking. Endless days stretching out ahead with no commitments might seem like heaven to many people. But for some older adults a lack of structure in their day – whether due to retirement, bereavement or “empty-nest” - can cause problem drinking, which can lead to serious health conditions. Julie Breslin, Head of the Drink Wise, Age Well programme said, “Significant cultural changes and an ageing population means harmful drinking in the over 50s is showing up in national statistics as never before. “Increasing alcohol consumption in our ageing population has been well documented, but the reasons behind it less so. Approximately one in three older adults with an alcohol

problem first develop it later in life, often for changes we will all go through. Retirement and bereavement can leave older adults feeling isolated and drinking at home to cope. “We hope this film will highlight to friends, families, peers and partners of older adults who drink problematically that there are sometimes understandable reasons why they do so. It might even make people stop and think that older relatives could be drinking, but keeping it hidden to avoid the shame.” The thought-provoking film shot in the style of a nature documentary can be seen at www.drinkwiseagewell.org. uk where there is plenty of help and advice. If you are a Sheffield resident and would like to speak to someone about your own or a loved one’s drinking call 0800 032 3723.

train, lavish ceremony and plenty of sweet smelling flowers!
TAURUS – Stick to tradition if you’re a Taurus. Weddings are about uniting families as far as your sign is concerned. The ceremony will probably take place in a giant park or an elegant winery.
LEO – Number one on your list is entertainment. You want the aisle to be your runway and the reception to star a live band, magician, fire spinner, the works! Your main aim is to put on a performance.
SAGITTARIUS – You’d like a destination wedding, and your commitment-shy sign is a nature lover at heart, so perhaps the woods for a rustic celebration. You’ll inject a lot of humour with a bawdy toast/roast, line dancing, and of course, a photobooth.
VIRGO – You’ll have the Pinterest-perfect wedding. After your simple ceremony under the bright blue summer sky, invite guests to a rustic barn with a naturedriven theme. There will be fairy lights everywhere and flowers in mason jars. Photograph everything with Polaroid cameras for the perfect Instagram pics!
SCORPIO – Your deeply private sign doesn’t love the idea of being vulnerable in front of a huge crowd. You’ll probably elope then have the show wedding a month later. A plunging dress is for you, but take it easy with the champagne!
CAPRICORN – You’ll appreciate high end elegance. It’s wifey for life with your dedicated sign, so expect a hand-selected pinot, high class menu, and a wedding in a mansion or country club with acres of property. Family is everything to you, just don’t let them dictate everything.
GEMINI – You’re committing. For life. This can be a scary time for a Gemini, but you cannot wait for the party! Hiring the DJ is an important part of the planning process for you, and you’re very excited to celebrate the day and paint the town red with your friends.
AQUARIUS – You’re not anti-love, but weddings seem like a farce to you. The humanitarian in you requests rock ‘n’ roll musicians to be invited, writers to read works of love, and a pot-luck style meal. Pick a suggested charity for donation.
CANCER – You’d prefer an intimate ceremony, as you hate emoting in public. You’re likely to get married abroad with just a couple of witnesses or in a quiet location to avoid onlookers or guests. Enjoy a catered affair in your own backyard with chic, DIY décor or a candlelit spring garden.
PISCES – There won’t be a dry eye in the house at your ceremony. You’ll be sobbing along the aisle so opt for waterproof mascara. You love a theme and enjoy planning your wedding elements to ‘Under the Sea,’ or ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream.’ If guests show up in costume, it will please you more than the wedding itself.

Experts are urging motorists to ensure they transport dogs correctly, to keep their pets safe and themselves on the right side of the law. Financial constraints, care commitments and social exclusion are just some of the barriers that can prohibit people from going out and enjoying events. The Ticket Bank is a digital project, created and based in Sheffield, that is providing free tickets to a wide range of events. These tickets can be accessed for free by registered community organisations and charities. The link between mental wellbeing and access to the arts is well documented. Studies in Italy have proven that cultural access is the
second most important determinant of wellbeing, higher than occupation, age, income and education (Grossi, et al. 2010 & 2012). Ticket Bank is looking to boost inclusion in the arts by using their unique and secure digital platform. The Ticket Bank program has now hit well over 500+ tickets donated to disadvantaged people in receipt of charity assistance and with over 100 charities on the platform, this figure will continue to grow. They have formed new partnerships in their native Sheffield, alongside Manchester, London, Bristol and York and have delivered a successful campaign for Off The Shelf Festival in 2018 Rachel Boyce – Ticket Bank Lead said “The Ticket Bank has been a fantastic programme to work on, it’s a pleasure to work with venues that are keen to increase their social responsibility by working with us to make their events more inclusive and audiences more diverse.” -
Steve Rimmer - CoFounder and CEO of Tickets for Good said I’m so pleased to share our vision of making events more charitable and inclusive. Our mission is to help event organisers, sponsors and performers optimise for diversity and inclusion, so that everyone in the community can benefit from social responsibility. Participation in social activity should be for everyone, and we are so pleased to be sharing our successful first year operating our ticket donations program and the amazing partnerships that have been already achieved across the music,
theatre, film and sports industry. Registered charities and non-profit community groups are invited to sign up via the website so that they can select tickets and immediately start distributing them for free to their clients and service users. https:// theticketbank.org/ Event organisers, sponsors or performers interested in optimising for diversity and inclusion should email steve@ ticketsforgood.co.uk and for more information on Tickets for Good visit https://events. ticketsforgood.co.uk/ blog/2018/10/12/scalingthrough-impact
LIVE EVENTS AT THE PARAMOUNT
GORDON BANKS TO BE HONOURED IN SHEFFIELD Following the news of the death of footballing legend Gordon Banks, Sheffield City Council is in talks with the FA to create a permanent tribute in his memory. Goalkeeping star Banks was awarded Sheffield Legend status with the first ever star installed on the city’s hall of fame after a career that included his appearance in the immortal 1966 World Cup Final victory over Germany in 1966. Born in Abbeydale in 1937 and raised in Tinsley, Banks made 628 appearances during a 15-year career in
the Football League, and won 73 caps for England, highlighted by starting every game of the nation’s 1966 World Cup victory. Banks played for Chesterfield, Leicester City and Stoke before moving to America to play for Fort Lauderdale Strikers. After the 1962 World Cup in Chile, a new coach was appointed in former England right-back Alf Ramsey. Banks won his first cap on 6 April 1963 against Scotland at Wembley. He was first choice goalkeeper for England in both 1966 and 1970 World Cup campaigns, making a wonder save against Pele in the latter tournament. Councillor Mary Lea, cabinet member for Culture, Parks and Leisure at Sheffield City Council, said: “The people of Sheffield are sad to hear of the loss this week of Gordon Banks – one of the city’s most famous sons. Gordon was born and grew up in Sheffield and the city is very proud of his many achievements – including being the only
England goalkeeper to win the World Cup. “We have committed to mark his achievements and are currently in discussions with the FA about how this
could best be done. Consultation with Gordon’s family will take place before any decisions are made and we will keep people informed of any plans as they develop.”

ANGLER’S CORNER
with Clint Walker
It’s show season again and this weekend will see the superb Northern Angling Show return to Manchester for the seventh time! I won’t be there though, it’s only the second time I’ve missed it and in truth, I will really miss it. It’s a great place to catch up with mates both in the trade and not, see some super new releases, and network the stands in the hope of getting that next writing job, but this year, I just can’t make it… Some of my supporters will be there; RAD Angling will be showcasing their wonderful range of carbon fibre bankware (all made in the UK, with a FIVE YEAR warranty; who else offers that?) and so will Spotted Fin, who have promised to release yet more products to market for 2019 at the show. Are you excited about that? You should be… Spotted Fin have made huge inroads into the UK and European bait market, and have hit the USA hard too, with Russia and more to follow; a complex assault utilising marketing, social media and just damn good quality which has really caught the eye of many anglers over the past couple of years. This year will see an even bigger siege of the market, with a plethora of new products, a new media and marketing manager, and some cracking signings to the brand, so keep an eye on it; I guarantee what they do this year will surprise, not just you, but plenty of others too… I’ll also miss the banter between the brands at the show and catching up with established anglers who know their stuff, know their angling, and know their product inside out. What I have noticed over the past few shows however, and this may sound a bit churlish, is the number of ‘sponsored’ anglers or worse still, ‘pro-staff’ creeping into the game who may not really deserve their position. I know, I sound bitter right, but I bet you have noticed it too? Anglers with a great social media profile, a YouTube channel, or even both, but regarding content or captures, sadly lacking, yet they still gain a place on the team? I read England Lure Team Manager Steve Collett’s comments a lot and I know he is one of many dead against the proliferation of sponsored anglers who are in fact no more
than another trade account, gaining a couple of pounds off recommended retail price in order to promote the bait and I’m inclined to agree. I once worked under a brand manager who told me that for every ‘sponsored’ angler who got free bait, there should be a return, a big return to cover the investment, and he’s right; if you don’t justify it with captures, commitment, sales and downright hard work, should you be getting it? Should you be a ‘sponsored’ angler? I assist with the running of a couple of brand promotional teams and if you don’t bring something to the table, you’re out; it’s that simple. Every week, we get requests to join the team, and when I ask “…what do you offer?” if I get a reply it’s often one of confusion, but more so, I don’t even get that, and I’ve realised that the Holy Grail of sponsorship is just a vision of free stuff to many. It doesn’t work like that. I know anglers who eat, sleep, live and breath the brand they are deservedly backed by, but I know others who don’t even wear the Tee-shirt on the bank; it takes effort, but then I was always taught that you should work hard to get what you want… others obviously weren’t… This week, I’ve had an application (I use the term very loosely) from a junior angler wanting to join one of my teams. He enclosed some images purporting to be of his kit, which included items from the company he sought sponsorship from, but whilst I considered it, something just didn’t look quite right; I thought I recalled the images he had sent… I spent the next hour trawling images on the company social media pages and eventually noted that two of the pictures were first posted almost five years ago… by me! The applicant had done no more than trawl through the same social media, ‘lift’ a few images, edit, and resave before claiming them as his own and sending them through. He thought he had gone far enough back to prevent discovery, and had it been any other image except one of mine which I vaguely remembered, he may well have done, but any reputable company WILL check, and when you’ve been caught out once, you don’t get a second chance. What if I’d missed it though? Perhaps he would have been given a chance, offered an invite to join our team, maybe even a place on the display stand at the Northern Angling Show. He would have been talking to you about products he

doesn’t know, maybe doesn’t even use yet, but would have been considered by many punters to be an ‘expert’ from whom to seek advice… frightening really when you may have a lot of money burning a hole in your pocket isn’t it, especially if you were to spend it on his recommendation! After a good few years on the periphery of the angling trade, and working with numerous brand leaders and publications, I have a good idea when someone knows their stuff, but if I was new to angling, what chance would I have of sorting the wheat from the chaff? On the flip side however, sometimes anglers who show no inclination for support are often the best for the job. This week, I’ve enlisted the help of a prominent blogger, Youtuber and genuinely nice chap to join two other anglers on another of our small corporate promotional teams. Why has he come to my attention? He kindly sent in a few images of fish he had caught, using the brand of tackle required, which were posted online, and our customers heartily recommended him! The barrage of positive comments suggested that we had missed a trick, so after a few enquiries, Danny agreed to become an integral part of our sponsored team. Like the others, he will get free product, (not a few pounds off, so not a trade
account) and a return will be expected. Before he has even been revealed however, we’ve had a library of relevant images, video clips and words, so I’m confident that he will dovetail nicely with our existing team members to maintain the supply of ammunition for social media and website. You may even see him on one of our show stands… but I promise he knows his angling! Enjoy the show…

There was unseasonably warm and pleasant weather across the region on Saturday, with a busy day in the County Senior League, with a League Cup Quarter-Final and an almost full league fixture list to compliment. League Cup Quarter-Final Wombwell Main had a tricky Quarter-Final tie at Wombwell Main Cricket Club, as they faced last years’ winners Swinton Athletic. Mid-table Wombwell made light work of the task, running out 3-1 winners. Wombwell will be hoping to add to their three League Cup wins, the last of which came just six years ago. Premier Division League leaders North Gawber Colliery were held to a 1-1 draw against Jubilee Sports at Woolley Miners Welfare. The draw ends a run of 10 consecutive wins in all competitions for North Gawber. Second placed Dodworth Miners Welfare took advantage of North Gawber’s slip, as they beat Hepworth United 3-0 at Far Lane, cut the lead at the top to just one point. Possibly the result of the day in the Premier League came at Grimethorpe Sports Ground, where Grimethorpe beat fourth placed Stocksbridge Park Steels Reserves 4-0. Goals from Oliver Cockbill-Black and Justin Westoby gave Oughtibridge WMSC a 2-0 home win over Penistone Church Reserves. Third bottom Handsworth Parramore Reserves extended their unbeaten run to three games, as they drew 2-2 against Denaby United at Oliver’s Mount. Division One Ecclesfield Red Rose 1915 were 2-1 winners at the Yorkshire NU Build Stadium against Hemsworth Miners Welfare Reserves. The win takes Ecclesfield back to the top of Division
One, after previous leaders AFC Dronfield were heavily defeated 4-1 away against Houghton Main. Ecclesfield have a one point lead, but have played three games fewer than Dronfield. Third placed Burngreave FC were once against impressive, beating Sheffield Bankers 9-1 at Firvale Academy. John Lufudu scored four tiems for Burngreave, who trail Ecclesfield by just four points. 2019 is being kind to Kiveton Park, who once again won, this time 3-0 at home against Millmoor Juniors. Kiveton have won all four of their games this year so far, including a penalty shootout against Dronfield in the cup last week. Sheffield Medics climbed into eighth place with a 2-0 win over Boynton Sports at Norton Playing Fields. Division Two Goals from Ryan Smith (2), Luke Norbury and Joe Oliver gave league leaders Wombwell Town a 4-1 home win over Swinton Athletic Reserves. Wombwell have dropped only two points from their 13 games this season, and subsequently have a healthy seven point lead. Second placed Stocksbridge Park Steels Development are not out of it though, as they showed with a impressive 7-1 win against Thurcroft Miners Institute at the Thurcroft Hub. Third placed Sheffield Union suffered a surprise 1-0 loss at home against third bottom AFC Dronfield Reserves. A hat-trick from Liam Egan inspired fourth placed Ardsley Athletico Juniors to a 4-0 away win over Dodworth Miners Welfare Reserves. Kai Skelley was also on target for Ardsley. United Worksop ended a six game winless run with a hard-fought 2-0 win over Worsbrough Bridge Athletic Development at Park Road. The win takes United into seventh position in the table.

THE LADS DESERVED MORE WARNE
Rotherham United manager Paul Warne couldn’t hide his disappointment after his side were pegged back deep in stoppagetime against Sheffield Wednesday. The Millers drew 2-2 in the South Yorkshire derby, but it took a scrappy goal in the 10th minute of added time to make honours even. “I’m obviously hugely disappointed,” said Warne. “The lads are disappointed. I thought we were excellent today. I’d like to think that every Rotherham fan that turned up today left the stadium really proud of their team. I thought we were excellent. Sheffield Wednesday haven’t been conceding goals and we should have had a hatful. From the first five minutes, we were in the ascendency for the whole game. “We created the most chances and looked the most threatening. We thoroughly deserved the win. But, unfortunately, we didn’t take our chances and it went to the 100th minute and they got the equaliser. “I’m tinged with huge disappointment but, if I’m honest, I’ve just said to the lads that I’m hugely proud of what they’ve achieved today. They’ve played really well and can take that confidence into the next game.” The Millers almost had the points in the bag as goals from Jon Taylor and Richie Towell had
MCCANN PRAISE FOR KANE Manager Grant McCann has been full of praise for young midfielder Herbie Kane through his stunning loan spell so far at the Keepmoat Stadium. Bristol-born Kane joined Rovers from Liverpool back in the summer, extending his deal in January amongst interest from other clubs in higher divisions, and McCann praised the attitude of his loan star throughout the season so far.

“The facts of this particular case were not ones we would have expected - and have to deal with a complaint about - and it is clearly impossible to have a specific set of Regulations that will apply in all circumstances of poor conduct, so, this charge was brought under a “We spoke to Liverpool back when we were looking to extend his loan that there were other clubs that were going in for him too, both in the Championship and the top end of League One, but the first thing they said was that they wanted him to stay here,” he said. “That made us feel like we’ve done all the right things with him whilst he’s been here, he’s improving, he’s always getting better, and I think that speaks volumes for the work we’re doing with Herbie, as well as the other young loan players we have. “He’s absolutely loving it here and he never wanted to go anywhere else, even with all the interest that was about in January, it can be easy as a young player to have your head turned, and so we’ve been delighted with everything he has done.” Kane has been a virtual-ever present since coming into the Rovers side in just the second game of the season, and McCann believes the midfielder has a big future in the professional game. “He came into the side in the second game of the season against Wycombe, as soon as he came in it was almost as though he’d played 500 league games, and that was his senior debut, he really has been top class,” he added. “He’s really been the best midfielder in League One for me in his position, and for such a young boy in his first loan spell anywhere, it’s very rare for young players to come in and do that in this league in their first loan, he’s adapted superbly. “He’s been a revelation since he arrived here, especially to say it’s his first ever loan, he’s been outstanding he really has and he’s going to go on and have a top career, he’s a grounded boy that’s so down to earth and just gets on with his game.”
MCCANN: THE BOYS CAN HOLD THEIR HEADS UP HIGH Grant McCann says his players can be proud as they equalled Rovers’ best ever Emirates FA Cup run. Two first-half goals for the Eagles were enough to dash Rovers’ hopes of progressing any further but Grant McCann says his players can hold their heads up high. “I thought it was good game. We played some good football and between the two boxes we were very good for the majority of the match. I was pleased with the showing from my group. The boys can hold their heads up high,” said McCann. “They were two soft goals that we conceded but when you play against Premier League opposition, they will take those chances. I said earlier in the week that when we get opportunities we need to take them but it just didn’t fall for us. We started on the front foot so to concede early was a bit of a sucker-punch but it was the goal just before half-time that really took the wind out of the boys’ sails. “I thought the way we passed the ball was crisp and our movement was good but we needed to take one of the chances we had. It’s frustrating when you lose a game but this match was an added bonus for us, the league is the most important.”

Come and Enjoy All The Footy on HDTV GOOD LUCK TO THE MILLERS!!! Despite the loss, McCann believes the performance can give Rovers confidence as they head towards the final stages of their promotion push. “The cup run has been great for us. It’s generated a bit of momentum for us. You could see that from the crowd that turned out today,” he said. “It was an unbelievable atmosphere, the fans were brilliant and hopefully everyone who was here today can see that we’re trying to build something for the future. It’s our aim to play in front of crowds like that every week in the Championship but we’ve got fifteen massive games left and we need to win the majority of them if we’re going to have a chance. “We’ve been on a very good run recently and we can take the confidence of this game and use it in the league games. The league is the most important thing for us. It stings to lose but we’ll put that behind us and concentrate on the next weekend.”

“I have to say we were far from our best today and Rotherham played well. “But that’s Championship football, you just don’t know
what’s going to happen next. “We made more mistakes in this game then the rest of the other games since I have been here put together. “And at this level, you get punished and that’s what’s happened to us today. “But luckily, we kept at it and got something with the last kick of the game so well done to the players for that.” Bruce was left frustrated by the dismissal of Fernando Forestieri, who picked up a second yellow card for celebrating the last-gasp leveller with Wednesdayites behind the goal. He added: “For me, that’s why supporters follow their team up and down the country, to see and celebrate last minute goals. “The players will celebrate them too, football is a game of emotion and you can’t take that out of the players. “I don’t agree with the ruling on this one but that’s it, it’s done and we lose Fernando for the next game just as we were starting to see sparks of what Forestieri is all about.”

2018/19 OWLS FRUSTRATION AGAINST THE MILLERS FAN COLUMN BY CHRIS PLATTS
‘When the ball hits the net, in the 90+10th, It’s Iorfa’ (credit to @Ben_Woody23, Twitter). This was my only highlight from the game on Saturday. A game of frustration from the player performances, to the playing surface and of course, refereeing decisions. But to give credit where credit is due, Rotherham fully deserved to win on Saturday, so maybe they’re the ones who should be more frustrated. From the offset it was clear to see what their plan was. Get into the faces of the Wednesday players and make sure we didn’t have a second to think about it. The Wednesday players looked tired. Maybe 3 games in a week was a step too far for the starting XI, who for the majority of them played in all 3. They were making out of character mistakes throughout the game. Hector was the main culprit for this, and hands up to him he came out on Twitter afterwards and apologised to the fans. Time and time again he was caught out on the ball. He wasn’t the only one. Joao given his chance of starting the game couldn’t control the ball. The ball constantly bouncing off him or rolling under his foot. Bannan couldn’t get on the ball and influence the game. Maybe the additional captaincy duties are starting to drag his performances down, or maybe not but he was far
from his best. For me the pitch didn’t help either side. The ball seemed to bobble around quite a lot and didn’t want to settle for a good passing game to be played. Which in the majority was what both sides were trying to play. The biggest talking points was of course the incidents with Forestieri. He was constantly kicked up in the air at every opportunity. The challenge on the half way line was a red card 99 times out of a 100. It was late, high, studs showing. A quintessential red card challenge. For me the referee was weak. From the first challenge on him to the last, the referee allowed it and didn’t stop the Rotherham players from giving him verbal abuse as well. Forestieri deserved his yellow card as it was reckless. Even then however, the Rotherham players were surrounding him, pushing his face and giving him abuse. So, when we score with the very last kick of the ball and a fan runs on the pitch to celebrate with him, how is he at fault for that? He didn’t jump into the crowd like the remaining squad did on the other side of the goal. Maybe the referee should have booked the rest of the squad and not him? And when Rotherham scored their second and Towell kicked the corner flag into the crowd, is that not a booking offence? If Bruce can appeal it, I’m sure he will. A frustrating day at the office for The Owls, but The Millers have got to be more frustrated.

READING VICTORY DELIGHTS BOSS Chris Wilder was delighted with his much-changed team’s performance in the Bramall Lane destruction of Reading. Chris Wilder was more than happy with his players following Saturday’s impressive victory over Reading. United opened the scoring after just 38 seconds through Kieron Freeman and a brace from Gary Madine put the game to bed before half-time. John Fleck added a fourth to seal a comfortable win, a fifth in succession in the league at home. And one that earnt praise from the manager, who remarked: “We got off to a great start and I just thought that showed the quality of the group.
“We tried to pick the right team, we always do and the team got the job done. “There were some great individual performance, I was delighted for Marvin Johnson, he came out and produced a real front foot display, which I know he can do. “Gaz (Madine) and
Scott (Hogan) were a real handful for the opposition and littered amongst the result were some good showings.” Wilder added: “I’m delighted to have been able to leave Billy (Sharp) off the pitch because people always talk about can you win when it’s a three-game week, we
had to make the right decisions. “We wanted to put an energy into the team, because we wanted to get after Reading. We wanted to press the opposition and not give them time “We got off to a fantastic start, we kept the hammer down and squeezed the life out of the opposition.”
MADINE DELIGHTED WITH READING DOUBLE Gary Madine netted twice in United’s impressive success over Reading on Saturday and the striker admits he’s loving life at Bramall Lane. Gary Madine netted twice in United’s impressive success over Reading on Saturday and the striker admits he’s loving life at Bramall Lane. Madine, on-loan until the end of the season from Cardiff City, has impressed since arriving last month and got his rewards against the Royals with a first-half double in front of a rare spectator. He remarked: “It’s been a long time coming, I’ve not scored in nearly a year, but I’ve also not played much football.
“I’d like to thank the Gaffer for showing faith in me, the lads who have been brilliant with me since I walked in and the fans gave me a great reaction, I couldn’t ask for anymore. “My Mam came to the game too, which she doesn’t normally do, so it was nice to get the two goals for her. She’s going to have to come every week now though!” Madine added: “It wasn’t a difficult decision to come here. A while ago, the goalkeeper coach at Bolton mentioned Chris liked me and I said then ‘I’d love to go there’. “I know the way I play helps, I give 100% and work my socks off, I’m not going to beat three or four players, but the fans appreciate hard work and I managed to top it off with a couple of goals. “Football wise this was the perfect move, the Gaffer has had success, it was a no brainer for me, we’ve got quality across the pitch and this is the place to be at the moment.”
