FESTIVAL OF THE OUTDOORS PROGRAMME ANNOUNCED Sheffield’s outdoor season is set to burst out of the blocks in March with the city’s first Festival of the Outdoors and details of the full festival programme have now been revealed. The line-up features a smorgasbord of outdoor activities and events from city centre dual mountain biking and road cycling challenges to heritage walks, beer runs, yoga, archery and even a paddle board river clean up. Undoubtedly one of the most unique events in the programme will be a series of Urban Caving trips into the storm drain network below Sheffield’s city centre. Sheffield Adventure Film Festival (ShAFF) and the youth hostelling charity
YHA (England & Wales) have teamed up with The Outdoor City to offer an exclusive opportunity to visit the underbelly of the city, in an urban adventure like no other. Guided by experienced caving professionals from the YHA’s Castleton Youth Hostel in the Peak District and an expert in the local area, participants will hear about the city’s ground-breaking work to uncover its lost waterways, whilst being wowed by an underground short film screening, taking “immersive” cinema to a whole new level. Urban Caving trips can be booked via the ShAFF website – but places are limited so be quick! Sheffield Adventure Film Festival is one of the
headline events in the Festival of the Outdoors, returning along with the likes of The Magnificent Seven hill climb, Big Running Weekend and Howard Street Dual mountain biking event, which all formed part of The Outdoor City Weekender in previous years. Climbing Works International Festival (CWIF) will also kick off the festivities this weekend 2- 3 March. The Festival of the Outdoors was born out of The Outdoor City Weekender, having exploded out of the original three day event programme and has now been expanded to the whole of March, offering ample opportunity to showcase Sheffield’s vibrant outdoor
communities and promote fun, adventure and participation for all. More than 40 organisers from across the city’s outdoor groups, clubs and businesses have come together to offer over 70 events across the month, with still some yet to be announced, making it one of the festival one of biggest of its kind in the UK. This year organisers have also incorporated a number of accessible events for people with additional needs, highlighting the availability of adapted bike sessions from Cycling 4 All and Experience Community and an accessible, relaxed pace walk led by Parkinson’s UK Sheffield branch. Climbing For All Sheffield will also
be attempting to climb the equivalent height of Europe’s biggest vertical rockface, to raise money for the charity. If the line-up of outdoor activities wasn’t enough, Sheffield’s cultural scene is also set to present a stellar month of world class events in March, with the current Leonardo Da Vinci exhibition running at the Millennium Gallery, Richard Hawley’s musical Standing at The Sky’s Edge opening at the Crucible, street art spectacular Mausoleum of Giants and Sheffield Beer Week to wash it all down with. This March, Sheffield is the place to be!For more information on Sheffield’s Festival of the Outdoors and to view the full festival programme visit www.theoutdoorcity.co.uk/ festival-of-the-outdoors

The Government is inviting applications to participate in the new group, which will discuss difficulties disabled people face in a range of areas, including independent living, transport, housing and employment, where improvements are required. By drawing on lived experience policy makers will be better placed to tackle the issues disabled people can encounter in participating in society. Each group will consist of local disabled people and disabled people’s organisations, led by a chair who will regularly report their views directly back to ministers. Minister for Disabled People Sarah Newton said: “It’s vital that we listen to the voices of people with disabilities across the country, as we know people’s experiences vary depending on where they live. That’s why we’re looking for people in Yorkshire who want to make a positive difference. By working together we can break down the barriers that people face in their daily lives, building a more inclusive society that works for us all.”
A chair is being sought to lead the efforts of the Yorkshire and the Humber group, as well as members to share their experiences. Applications from disabled people are especially welcome, or from people that have personal experience such as parents of disabled children or partners of disabled people. The Yorkshire and the Humber group will have a face-to-face meeting at least once a year but will be free to meet more often and will be able to share views regularly with the Government through an online portal. Once established, it will be part of the Regional Stakeholder Network for disabled people driving improvements across the country. The group will be one of nine new regional groups across the country: North West North East Yorkshire and the Humber West Midlands East Midlands East of England Greater London South West South East
RAISE MONEY & HELP EX-SERVICEMEN! The week commencing Monday March 4th could be a fantastic opportunity for residents of Rotherham & South Yorkshire to beat the credit crunch and cash in on their inherited and unwanted Medals. As well as coins and all associated items or unwanted gold and silver items for this is the week that the team of experts from The Medal Centre will be running a week of specialist Coin and Medal valuation days in & around Rotherham & South Yorkshire with Venues starting in Dalton on Monday & then visiting the following locations during the rest of the week, Brinsworth, Wath on Dearne, Rawmarsh, Whiston & a final event in Catcliffe on the Saturday Each of the specialists present are experts in their own chosen field and they will be on hand to give free verbal valuations on any inherited Medals and military items as well as coins and banknotes and most other small collectibles. Including scrap gold and broken jewellery in any form but particularly gold coins such as sovereigns and kruggerands or gold watches and watch chains. Please remember that any one of the experts will be happy to make you an immediate on the spot cash offer for your unwanted items and they will be happy to offer the very best prices available and most people are delighted at the large amounts they are offered. This is because each of the valuers in attendance are members of respected trade organisations such as the Orders & Medals research society & the British Numismatic trade association The Medal Centre last have been asked to return to a number of local venues due to the huge response to the event held at this venue last time that they visited. At the last local event run by the Medal Centre the team of experts purchased a tin box containing the medals of a young local volunteer soldier who gave his life for King & Country on the first day of
the battle of the Somme during the Great War 1914-1918 serving with the West Yorkshire Regiment & was later awarded a posthumous gallantry medal There has never been a better time to sell your inherited collectable items as, due to The Medal Centres vast client base, they are able to offer the best possible prices and the Medal Centres proprietor Mr Andrew Jukes was recently quoted as saying “we are now able to pay exceptionally high prices for all Medals from a single item to a complete collection”. Prices for this type of item are at an all time high & people are often surprised how much some of the associated items such as cloth & metal badges or items of uniform & paperwork & photographs can enhance the value of a group of medals. Even items such as Military paybooks or old Military Photographs will always be of interest to a genuine collector. Mr Jukes also commented that at the moment good quality English & Scottish banknotes are in very high demand & he is paying very high prices for such items. He also made a point of saying how pleased he is that he now has a new in house expert on philately & stamps & he would now welcome the offer of mint condition British stamps including presentation packs & stamp collections. It is also a good way to help your local community as The Medal Centre will be giving a donation to local ex-service charities for every item they are able to purchase on the day. However if you cannot attend on the day one of the experts from The Medal Centre will be happy to call and see you at your convenience and they can be contacted on 01434 609794 or 07950 421704.
The price of death certificates has almost trebled this month adding to snowballing costs for grieving families. The 175 per cent increase means it now costs £11 to print a certificate at registration, up from £4 a copy. It comes a week after MPs were accused of sneaking through a stealth ‘death tax’ by increasing probate charges. From April, some families will face bills of up to £6,000 to secure legal control over a deceased relative’s estate. Yesterday lawyers and funeral directors said the death certificate price rise was ‘unfair’ and ‘highly inappropriate’. Families often need up to 20 death certificates to send to different authorities. Life insurance companies, banks, building societies and investment firms can all ask for them to confirm a former customer’s death. Liberal Democrat leader Sir Vince Cable said last night: ‘This all adds to the cost of death and it prolongs the misery of people going through the most difficult times of their lives. There is no justification for almost tripling the costs of death certificates.” Companies will often insist on originals and refuse photocopies. Relatives also need to supply original certificates when applying for probate. The decision to treble the cost of death certificates follows the announcement of proposed increases to probate fees. Terry Tennens, of the National Society of Allied and Independent Funeral Directors, said: “In these times of austerity, we think this is highly inappropriate.” A Home Office spokesman said: ‘The changes to the civil registration certificate fees are the first increase since 2010. The fees are set at cost recovery levels only, and registration officers have the power to waive or reduce fees on grounds of compassion or hardship.”

WHAT DO TEAM FOSTERING’S CURRENT FOSTER CARERS THINK? Karen and John have fostered with Team Fostering for a number of years, and have agreed to share their experience. ‘We loved raising our family and wanted to share the safety, love, respect and guidance that we experienced together with a child or young person who hadn’t had that in their life,’ Karen explains. ‘Basically, we wanted to make a difference.’
John goes on to explain how their lives have changed since making that initial decision, ‘During our time as a fostering family we have learnt so much about ourselves,’ he says, ‘It made us realise how strong and grounded we are and the tight bond that we share as a couple, and to share this with a child and bring them into a family where they feel cared about for the first time is so rewarding. It has really developed us as a

family and as individuals, bringing out qualities we just didn’t realise we had!’ The couple are well thought of across the agency and are part of a team of close-knit foster carers and staff and have really flourished in their role. ‘The role is just amazing,’ Karen shares, ‘We feel so humbled in our journey to date.’ ‘We are really happy with Team Fostering as an agency. From our first initial contact where we just wanted an informal chat, right through to becoming foster carers, we were treated with honesty and respect.’
If you’d like to find out more about fostering with Team Fostering, you can speak to their team in a way that best suits you. WHAT SHOULD YOU CONSIDER IF YOU’RE THINKING ABOUT FOSTERING? Karen and John share some advice, ‘Get in touch with Team Fostering. They never made us feel pressured but just gave us some great information on fostering and answered all of our questions, then let us take the time to think about what we’d heard. Now we’re approved and fostering with the agency we really feel like part of a team, a team whose aims and objectives are to meet the needs of each and every child. We’re so happy we chose Team Fostering as our agency.’

FLY-TIPPERS PAY THE PRICE AS COUNCIL CLEAN UP Sheffield City Council is working hard to keep the city clean and prevent fly-tipping, with two more successful prosecutions for the offence this year, totalling more than £3,000 in fines and costs. Fly-tipping is national problem, with high levels of waste being dumped across the country. In Sheffield the council is trying to tackle the problem, through better monitoring, reporting and investigation processes. Two fly-tipping cases were heard recently at the Sheffield Magistrates court, where separate defendants chose to be tried at Crown Court.
The council is obliged to engage a barrister to prosecute cases held at Crown Court. Simon Knowles (52) of Cowley Gardens, Sheffield, was tried at York Crown Court on 23rd January 2019. Knowles admitted dumping conifer waste and pleaded guilty to the charge of fly tipping. The courts fined Knowles £224 and ordered him to pay £1,000 costs to the Council. In the second case, Rayon Wiggan (50) of Buckenham Street, Sheffield, was tried at Sheffield Crown Court on 1 February 2019. He admitted fly tipping waste including concrete slabs and other construction waste at Buckenham Drive, and was fined £460 and ordered to pay £1,487 costs to the Council. In the case against Wiggan, a member of the public witnessed a van being used to dump waste, which was reported to the Council’s Environmental Enforcement Officers. The van turned out to be a hired vehicle which they traced back to Wiggan. The total in fines and costs for both cases was £3,171. Councillor Karen McGowan, Cabinet Adviser for Environment and Streetscene at Sheffield City Council, said: “Fly-tipping is a crime

against our environment. Not only is it unsightly, hugely costly and time consuming to remove, but also has an impact on public health. “Dumped waste contributes to problems with pests such as rats, which causes further strain on council services and unrest amongst our communities. “We are working hard to keep Sheffield clean and tidy, in partnership with Amey, and our brilliant communities who organise and take part in litter picks, so it’s disappointing that a small number of people think it’s ok to dump their waste wherever they want. “I’m pleased that the courts have made these men pay for their actions and hope this will deter them and others from doing so in the future.” Environmental Enforcement Officers can issue Fixed Penalty Notices (FPN) of £400 to anyone caught fly-tipping. In some cases vehicles will be seized during a fly-tipping investigation. The council takes fly-tipping seriously and last year issued more than 100 FPNs for fly-tipping and dumping of waste, totalling more than £14,000. Where the FPNs were not paid, or where an FPN was not considered appropriate, the council prosecuted. In all, 19 waste offence cases were brought before the courts, with fines and costs totalling more than £13,000. Four
cases led to seizure of vehicles and ten cases are pending court dates. As well as keeping Sheffield clean and tidy through enforcement work, the council, through its Streets Ahead contract, assists local people in organising community litter picks. Last year more than 450 bags of litter were collected by local people keen to keep their communities litter-free, and another 50 bags were collected last month. Anyone interested in organising a litter pick can submit their interest through the council’s website. People who need to dispose of additional waste can do so at their nearest Household Recycling Centre, or they could use the Councils Bulky Item Collection Service which can be contacted on 0114 27 34567. Business waste must be disposed of using a licensed carrier, and each load of waste has to be accounted for by the business obtaining Waste Transfer Notes which must be retained for two years. Environmental Enforcement Officers may request to see these notes, and they may issue a Fixed Penalty Notice for £300 if the business does not have them. People who witness fly-tipping can report it through the council’s website or call 0114 273 4567.

TRAMLINES FESTIVAL ACHIEVES BRONZE AWARD BEIGHTON TOP CLUB CELEBRATES A VERY FOR ACCESS FROM ‘ATTITUDE IS EVERYTHING’ SUCCESSFUL FIRST TWELVE MONTHS Tramlines Festival has been recognised for enabling deaf and other disabled people to enjoy the festival. Sheffield’s biggest ever party, Tramlines Festival takes place from Friday 19th – Sunday 21st July at Hillsborough Park. Headliners include Two Door Cinema Club (Friday), Courteeners (Saturday) and Nile Rodgers & Chic (Sunday). Tramlines Festival has always taken steps to encourage and enable people with disabilities to enjoy the festival. These efforts have now been officially recognised by ‘Attitude is Everything’, an Arts Council supported body who endorse events and festivals that improve deaf and disabled people’s access to live music. The Bronze Award from ‘Attitude is Everything’ recognises that Tramlines fulfils their ‘Charter of Best Practice’ in a number of ways. This includes making free passes for
carers available, making information clear and accessible, providing disabled toilets and providing a disabled viewing platform. Tramlines joins festivals such as Leeds Festival, Field Day, T in the Park and Y Not Festival in receiving this award. Tramlines has also worked closely over the years with Sheffield Royal Society for the Blind who were the official charity partner in 2015. SRSB has helped Tramlines to keep the website clear and optimised for screen readers. Tramlines also works with SRSB and a Sheffield Live Community Radio sight impaired volunteer, to create an annual audio guide to the festival aimed at visually impaired people which is broadcast through the SRSB website and Sheffield Talking News service. In 2018 ‘Look North’ included a feature where they followed two visually impaired festival guests around Tramlines.
This experience was documented on the SRSB Blog by one of the festival goers. Tramlines has also worked with Under The Stars, a Sheffield based disability arts organisation. ‘The Stars Band’, a group of musicians with a range of learning disabilities who developed their skills at Under the Stars performed for Tramlines at The O2 Academy in 2016. Information regarding the free passes for carers for Tramlines 2019 can be found on the info page of the official Tramlines website under the ‘access’ heading. Timm Cleasby – Head of Production said; Achieving this Bronze Award from Attitude is Everything is a huge step for Tramlines as accessibility is something that our attendees have asked us to improve on in past years. In 2018, we made disabled access a real priority with lots of big changes to our infrastructure. These
changes really paid off and it’s great to have the recognition from Attitude is Everything. We believe that everyone should be able to enjoy our festival and we will keep pushing to improve further in 2019. Whilst the Tramlines line up gets bigger each year, it remains seriously good value for money. Tickets are now on the fourth tier and priced from £69.50 plus booking fee for all three days. VIP upgrade tickets are available for an additional £50 granting access to the private VIP area situated right next to the main stage with private bars, food stalls and toilets. Under 12s go for free. For full ticketing info, visit www.tramlines. org.uk.
This time last year we were delighted to report on the reopening of Beighton Top Club, following on from the heard work of a few locals who believed in their local
community and wanted to create a focal point for village social life. Twelve months on, we congratulate the club on their first birthday! All the news is good, with membership now
in excess of 800 and rising, from a standing start. The artists who have had the pleasure of performing at the club have reported receiving a great reception from good audiences, and so popular is the club proving, that from this week they have added regular Friday night entertainment to their offering. The local community is also benefitting from the club’s success; local junior football team Beighton Falcons are

ANGLER’S CORNER
with Clint Walker
I’m often asked which kind of fishing I enjoy most, and in all honesty, it depends what time of year it is, and what mood I’m in! I have decided however after much internal debate, that float fishing for pike is up there at the top, and I don’t think you’ll change my mind… I love it, there is something primeval about pike, a fish which hasn’t changed much throughout its evolution, perhaps because it’s just about perfectly designed for what it does, kill things and eat them, and with that comes a sense of anticipation, maybe even fear for some… Although I enjoy the tactic immensely, I’m not having a great deal of success with float fished baits at the moment. Come to think of it, I’m not doing very well with legered baits either, with many venues locally proving difficult to crack in changeable conditions, but you have to be in it to win it right? I’ve also been fortunate enough to have had the full range of Dinsmores pike floats sent through to look at, so this week, I’ve sent a few out to another team member to share the love, and had a couple of sessions myself, hoping to catch a toothy adversary. The Dinsmores range covers almost everything the pike angler could need, with inline floats, drifter bungs, and ‘bottom only’ floats amongst the ‘Syndicate XT’ range of products. The brand even does complete kits, with everything included to construct an effective and sensitive float rig to offer baits for predators. They are simple to use too, so if you are fairly new to pike fishing, there is nothing complicated to perplex or confuse… My favourite way to float fish is using a ‘bottom only’ float, fish it slightly over depth, with too much weight to cock it. That might sound a little unusual, but I think it results in an extremely sensitive set up. Think about it; if fished slightly overdepth, I have to tighten up my mainline to cock the float, so if anything moves, so does the float. It may move upwards, lay flat, dip slightly, or even turn in a circle, but it WILL move. If it’s overweight, and the fish lifts the weight, then the float slides away gracefully to indicate the take; either way, I win! Try it and see for yourself, I
WRAGG FOOTBALL LEAGUE with A Royston
I bet the Royston Oakwood players can’t wait for the end of the season after a disaterous season in which they have still to pick up their first point, and Handsworth Parramore showed no sympathy when they travelled to play them and winning quite convincingly by 10-0, with Cartledge grabbing 4 goals, Riley 2 and one each for Schofield, Grady, and Davenport plus an own goal . Top of the League Sheffield Academicals only picked up a point against Elsecar Dynamoes so HSBC Bank move to top spot on goal difference despite not playing. Academicals drew 3-3, Gillott ,Nowell and Harling for Elsecar - Doran, Webber and Straw for the Academicals. Wickersley Old Village maintained their push for the top with a 2-0 win against Plough Rangers with a double from Batchelor. Swinton Athletic were leading 2-0 at half time with Beckett and Sandland scoring ,but a second half fight back by Caribbean Sports saw them draw level with Marshall and Billard scoring In Division 1 Rossington’s 3-2 away win at Thorncliffe lifted them in to top spot on goal difference Lang, Holley and Murray scoring, and for Thorncliffe it was Murphy and Bell. Dinnington Town were 3-1 winners against West End Terriers, Toseland 2 and Thomson. Scawthorpe Club were 5-1 victors against Denaby United, Perks 3, Collinson and Hendry. think you may be surprised just how sensitive it is. So, why is fishing the bait under a float so good? I don’t know if it’s just me, but when I’m pike fishing, there is always a real sense of anticipation that the next snapper might the biggest in the lake, and I get excited just watching the float, but when it moves, that is when things really get ramped up! Like any float, if you stare at the big red tip of a pike bung, it will either move, or start to convince your eyes that it has moved! Glance away from the sight tip, and the bank starts to slide into the water, an optical illusion caused by ripple movement that has undoubtedly caused an angler or two to fall in, but that’s just part of the fun! We’ve all seen the 1975 movie about a big shark too, Jaws, and the attempts to catch it by Chief Brodie and the Captain of the boat ‘Orca’, Quint, and we all remember the scene in which the bright yellow barrels surface, then start to power away as their opponent makes its next move… that’s pike fishing to me! The float tells a story, and each one is different. How many times have you peered intently at the red tip on a blissfully calm day, and noted a sudden ring of ripples spread away from the float for no apparent reason? It gets your attention instantly, because you know something, potentially a something with big teeth, may have just moved your bait! How about the sudden lurch of the deadbait pencil? Surely this is the fish, the big one that so far has only ever been a rumour? It could be! On one water I fish, it’s common for the float to just pop up and lie flat on the surface, before seconds later, sliding upright and sinking away… how exciting is that? You can often see the bright red target moving beneath the water too, giving an indication of which way to strike to set the hooks, before all hell breaks loose as a big pike tries to evade arrest; brilliant, there is no better angling experience in the UK in my opinion…and you won’t convince me otherwise! This week, on a visit to a club water, I’d quickly pieced together my rod, still set up from the last session, and put a 28g weight on a float rated at 22g for the reason I’ve already mentioned. I slid the pole elastic stop knot a foot over depth and swung out the roach deadbait to settle in about five feet of water. With everything set, and the

Penistone Church beat Plough Vets by 2-0 with Adams scoring both goals the second one being an over head kick not bad for a 55 year old. Suth Kirkby Colliery drew 2-2 with Princess Royal, Hatto with a double for Kirby.

line in the buzzer, I turned away to set up the second rod, a leger rig which I intended to bait with smelt. As I threaded the rod guides, I kept an eye on the float, and amongst the bright silvery ripples, I thought I saw it rise up in the water by just a few millimetres. It had, then it returned to its original position before rising again, and then slowly sinking away; fish! I was on the rod in a flash and set the hooks vigorously before feeling a head shaking thump of a pike. I love the way a pike fight plays out, a few deep runs before the torpedo shape hits the surface and the fun starts with tail walking fish before it is eventually enveloped by the waiting mesh and you can finally see your prize. In this case, it certainly wasn’t Jaws, but a pale fish of around 7lb which had quickly located the dead roach, but it provided much needed encouragement for the day ahead. Although I’d got off to a good start, that was unfortunately it for the day! I had no more interest for the next six hours, and as no-one else had caught either, it became obvious that I’d just got lucky, and the pike were not really in the mood to feed but my super sensitive set up had provided the only indication of the day.
My visions of yellow barrels popping up next to the float never materialised, nor did my mythical monster make an appearance, but I’d had fun trying out the new Dinsmores packages, and if you’re in the market for some new kit that is simple to use, works well, and won’t break the bank, then pick up a Dinsmores pack next time you’re in the tackle shop, and enjoy some hugely exciting float fishing for pike!

We had our very own glimpse of spring on Saturday afternoon in the County Senior League. Spring means only one thing normally, not always good weather, but busy fixture lists, with big games at both ends of the tables. Premier Division Both the top two in the Premier Division were unable to win on Saturday. League leaders North Gawber Colliery were held to a 1-1 draw by defending champions Swinton Athletic at Mexborough Athletic Ground. Second placed Dodworth Miners Welfare suffered a 3-1 loss away against Oughtibridge WMSC. Matthew Harrison, Charles Tunnard and Joshua Walkers were all on target for Oughtibridge. Third placed Stocksbridge Park Steels Reserve were the only team victorious in the top three, as they claimed a hard-fought 2-1 home win over Handsworth Parramore Reserves. Fifth placed Penistone Church Reserves claimed their second win of 2019, with an impressive 6-1 away win over Denaby United. Alfie Smith scored the only goal for Jubilee Sports, as they beat 10 man Frecheville 1-0 at Davy Sports Club. The result of the day in the Premier Division came at Wombwell Main Cricket Club, where Wombwell Main beat South Kirkby Colliery 9-0. Billy Smith starred for Wombwell scoring five times, with Kai Hancock also contributing a hat-trick, as well as a strike from Ellis Pickering. Goals from Jamie Clayton, Ryan Silvester and James Pilkington gave Hepworth United a 3-0 home win over Grimethorpe Sports. Division One It was a big day at the top of Division One. League leaders Ecclesfield Red Rose 1915 were beaten 3-1 away against in-form Houghton Main. Things would get worse Ecclesfield as they slipped to second place, after AFC Dronfield registered
an emphatic 7-1 win at home against Sheffield Bankers. Third placed Burngreave FC were helped to a 4-2 win over Sheffield Medics by an hat-trick from John Lufudu. Just three points now separate the top three, although Dronfield have played three games more. Adam Saxton scored three times to inspire Denaby Main to a 6-1 win over Wombwell Main Reserves at the UPVC Trade Centre Ground. Jordan Cooper, Adam Kennedy and Matthew Westwood were also on target for the hosts. Kiveton Park’s strong form continued, as they registered a eighth consecutive victory – a 2-0 away win over Hemsworth Miners Welfare Reserves. Boynton Sports claimed a vital three points at Killamarsh Juniors Football Ground, as they beat bottom side Millmoor Juniors 4-1. The win lifts Boynton to ninth place. Division Two Division Two leaders Wombwell Town dropped points for only the second time this season, as they were held to a 1-1 draw at home by third placed Sheffield Union. Second placed Stocksbridge Park Steels Development took advantage of Wombwell’s slip to move within five points of the leaders, after a 2-0 home win over fourth placed Ardsley Athletico Juniors. Dodworth Miners Welfare Reserves lost 4-0 to Ardsley Athletico last week, but they put that behind them quickly as they won 4-0 this week against Worsbrough Bridge Athletic Development. AFC Dronfield Reserves’ resurgence continued as they made it four wins from five games in 2019, with a 3-1 home win over Swinton Athletic Reserves. Goals from Omar Boudabouza, Adam Nicholas (2) and Chris Wright (2) gave Thurcroft Miners Institute a 5-2 victory over New Bohemians at Forge Valley School.

MCCANN SAYS HIS SIDE WILL LEARN FROM SCUNTHORPE DRAW Grant McCann felt his side invited Scunthorpe United onto them in the second half of Saturday’s M180 derby at Glanford Park, but praised his side’s first-half showing. Rovers had to settle for a point when a Kyle Wootton headercancelled out Mallik Wilks’ first half opener. While McCann was keen to praise his side’s dominant first half display, he could not hide his disappointment that Rovers had allowed Iron to get back into the game. “In the first half I thought we were excellent,

but in the second half we were bang average,” he said. “We weren’t clinical enough, with the chances we created we could have been two or three up. In the second half we didn’t press them, didn’t pass the ball well enough and didn’t create many chances. We could have put the game to bed, but we were slashing at things. “We invited pressure onto ourselves, we sat off them and that’s exactly what a direct team like Scunthorpe United want. Their gameplan worked and they deserved the goal, in the second half they were better than us.” Despite McCann’s disappointment, the manager believes his young side will learn a lot from the match. “We played in to their game plan in the second half, we played the way they wanted us to,” he added. “It’s never easy coming to Glanford Park and Scunthorpe are on a bit of a roll, they drew with Sunderland here and have picked up some wins. “It’s a learning curve for us, we’ve learned that we need to make sure we follow our plan because when we do that, nine times out of 10 we will win.”
COPPINGER: SUCCESS IS IN OUR OWN HANDS James Coppinger says Rovers will not be getting too down after being held to a draw in Saturday’s Sky Bet League One clash at Scunthorpe United on Saturday. Mallik Wilks put Rovers ahead in the first half before Kyle Wootton dragged the Iron level after the break, and Coppinger says the squad felt like they should have come away from Glanford Park with all three points. “I thought we were brilliant in every department in the first half and, if anything, we should have had more than just the one goal that we managed to score, but when you’re away from home and you aren’t ruthless then it can be a dangerous,” he said. “The game became a lot more open after the break, especially that first 15 minutes or so of it - we managed to play through the lines well, but couldn’t break down their back four enough. “We can’t get too down about this result, even though we feel like we should be coming away with a win, the games are coming thick and fast and we go again on Tuesday in what will be another tough game.” Rovers are on the road once again when they face Shrewsbury Town on Tuesday, and Coppinger says there is a real drive within the
team to bounce back with a win as they look to cement their place in League One’s top six. “We still have to remember that we are in a good position, having the cup run now means we have a couple games in hand and if we can pick up some good points from those games then we can look to cement our position in the play-offs,” he added. “We have a good squad with a positive manager, and we’ll all be back on the training ground come Monday looking ahead to Shrewsbury now and getting a win over there it’s a big opportunity for us. “We have a lot of teams still to play that are in and around where we are at the minute and there’s 14 more games left, it’s all about ticking those off and making sure we’re in the best position we can be.”

WORTHY WINNERS Following a first half performance that belied their mid-table position, Steve Bruce says his side were ‘worthy winners’ against Swansea on
Saturday. The Owls went into the break 3-0 up and although they couldn’t hit similar heights in the second half, the earlier damage was done.
Bruce said: “We were very worthy winners all things said. That first half was the best we have played by far in the short time I’ve been here.
“We had a game plan to press them high, we stuck to it and got our rewards in that first half. “It’s fair to say we ran out of juice a little bit and I knew the second half was going to be a bit of a struggle because of what we put in earlier. “We’ve had a few problems with sickness, injuries and suspension but I’m delighted with the way we went about it and pleased with the result.”
SMALL STEPS Owls skipper Tom Lees says the team showed glimpses of what they are working to achieve under new boss Steve Bruce on Saturday. Wednesday remain undefeated under Bruce and are currently on a six-game unbeaten league run, which stretches back to midJanuary. But during Saturday’s 3-1 win over Swansea, Wednesday took it up a notch and capped a fine first half display with three goals to effectively seal the points. In an excerpt from Lees’ column in Tuesday’s matchday programme, the captain said: “It was only a small step

2018/19 as we have lots to do and work on but I think it showed early signs of how we want things to be going forward. “Real high pressing, high energy, front foot pressure with and without the ball, creating chances and looking dangerous with movement, pace and lots
of energy. “I thought it got the crowd going, they made a lot of noise and it looked like they were enjoying the game. “I think the way we played first half will be what we are working towards week in, week out and we have to try and sustain it.”
CLINICAL OWLS HEADING IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION FAN COLUMN BY CHRIS PLATTS
Having looked back at the first half performance on Saturday I can honestly say that was possibly the best half of football we’ve played all season. We didn’t have the most possession, but when we did we were clinical in all aspects. Closing down the ball, looking to attack quickly, and the goals, clinical in all aspects. Great awareness from Aarons to set up Reach on both occasions, and Fletcher rolling back the years with a spectacular overhead to make it 3-0 before the break. Lazaar was immense at left back. Solid in defence, and always looking to get forward in support of the impressive Aarons. Hutchinson was a rock in front of the back four, who were moderately untroubled the whole game. Just one minor lapse in concentration
for the Swansea goal. Bannan was creative throughout, with Reach looking back to his early season best, aided by scoring a brace. For me Fletcher and Joao look like they could form a deadly duo up front. Both working together nicely with one dropping off, while the other ran in behind. Could be one to keep together on Tuesday night despite the return of Forestieri from suspension. The second half was one to forget but at least it gave Bruce as chance to experiment with personnel and tactics without it costing us the game. Consistency is the key from now until the end of the season. If we can play like we did in the first half then I don’t see why we can’t look up the table and maybe start dreaming again. At the moment that is a big IF. But who knows? Only time will tell.

WILDER’S WEST BROM VERDICT NEW DEALS The Blades boss was delighted to have beaten a strong West Brom team in their own back yard. Chris Wilder was delighted to leave The Hawthorns with all three points, as Kieran Dowell’s first goal for United proved decisive against promotion rivals West Brom. Speaking in the aftermath of the success, Wilder praised his players for seeing the game out, but thought they should have won by a more comfortable margin. He remarked: “We will only know the significance of that victory at the end of the season, but it was a game we were really up for. “But you don’t get the results we’ve had
this season without being committed, if I’m totally honest I don’t think it was our greatest performance, we gave the ball away far too cheaply at times and they could have hurt us. “But from a positive point of view, the commitment, character and just the general togetherness
was most pleasing.” Wilder added: “We lost Egan at halftime, Cranie’s calf tightened up and Marvin Johnson hasn’t played a lot of football, so we’re delighted to have won a tight game against a talented group of players. “We’ve still got to learn lessons though.
We could have taken it away from the opposition and West Brom, in our position, would have probably won by three or four. “But if we are to be playing top end Championship games towards the end of the season then hopefully it can be a lesson learnt.”
FOR DUO Billy Sharp and Enda Stevens last week signed new long-term contracts with the club. Skipper Sharp, who has scored 23 goals in 32 appearances in all competitions this season, has penned new terms on a deal until the summer of 2021. The 33-yearold, who became the leading English league goalscorer this century on New Year’s Day, recently netted his 100th goal for United at Aston Villa. Meanwhile, Republic of Ireland international Stevens has committed his future until the summer of 2022. The 28-year-old, who joined on a free transfer from Portsmouth in the summer of 2017, has made 80 appearances for the Blades, including 33 in all competitions this term. He has been a regular at left wing-back since his arrival, although he has played the last two games as part of a central defensive trio. Boss Chris Wilder is delighted that both have committed to the club, saying: “Both new contracts are fully
deserved, they have been outstanding in their respective areas of the pitch. “Billy is a natural goalscorer for us, we are delighted we have negotiated so that he can extend his period with the club. I would imagine he is looking forward to more successful times, he looks after himself and has that drive and desire to keep pushing on. The group has evolved and improved in my time here and he has done likewise. “Enda has been outstanding since he came in. The way he plays the game, he has been a very important part of our progress in the last 18 months. I’ve always been a big fan of his. He has taken to Championship football really well and kicked on, which has resulted in him getting in the Republic of Ireland national squad. “They are both here for the long-term, they are good players and hopefully they will keep moving forward with us. “It is also another sign that we are committed to rewarding impressive performances, we want to keep our best players and I’m delighted that they will be with us for a longer period, just like we did with David McGoldrick a few weeks ago.”
