LET’S MAKE FARGATE A FORCE TO BE RECKONED WITH A team of business leaders have declared a shared mission to rejuvenate Fargate in Sheffield city centre, promising to make it into a “force to be reckoned with”. They have outlined plans to consult over the summer on a new identity for the street and neighbouring High Street which includes improved public spaces, kiosks and seated areas, and a new emphasis on entertainment and city centre living, alongside its excellent shops and retail outlets. To achieve the vision the council is proposing to consult with owners and occupiers in Fargate and the surrounding streets in partnership with the Business Improvement District.
It will upgrade the public realm as funding allows and review the management and design of shop fronts, looking at the current planning guidance and making changes where possible. It will also allow more restaurant uses with defined outdoor seating areas and encourage the use of the upper floors for a mixture of residential, commercial, community and health-based, such as dentists and GPs for example, through a review of policy, improved seating and work with the Universities on exciting new public spaces. The council will also support the private sector which owns large parts of Fargate by looking at changes of usage which encourage new growth in
the area. Councillor Mazher Iqbal, cabinet member for business and investment at Sheffield City council, said: “We are committed to giving Fargate a new sense of purpose as the gateway to our excellent and transformative Heart Of The City II scheme. “We want Fargate to be a force to be reckoned with. You can’t hide from the fact that Fargate is changing, and, that it faces challenges. But by uniting behind this draft vision we can see the green shoots of recovery on this historic street. “It is so important that we have signed up to this joint commitment to improving the street. We are one city centre, and it’s crucial that, as the Moor and Heart Of The City develop new
identities, that Fargate can do the same. “We also want people across the city to have their say about how Fargate develops so we can create a street that works for us all.” Councillor Iqbal says there are grounds for optimism after Christmas footfall on the street, boosted by the Big Wheel and Christmas markets, increased by three per cent. Only five per cent of shops on Fargate are currently empty. New accommodation close to Chapel Walk, together with a new bar planned for Orchard Square and the city centre’s first Pret A Manger which opened last year, show further evidence of how the street is changing, he said. The council is still exploring how the public
realm improvements can be made but say the vision is an important first step. Experts say the vision can define how the street can develop and improve changes to shopping behaviour by giving building owners and retailers their chance to play a part in making Fargate a vibrant street again. Plans are also being drawn up for how Fargate can support the Invictus Trials scheduled to take place in July this year. The vision has been agreed by several of the business people responsible for many of Fargate’s key businesses and attractions. The draft vision is set to be endorsed by cabinet in the summer following a period of public consultation.

ROTHERHAM INTERCHANGE REOPENS AFTER £12M REFURBISHMENT Rotherham Interchange reopened on Sunday 3 March, following a £12 million refurbishment scheme. The new interchange is a key part of the Council’s plans to regenerate Rotherham Town Centre through the town centre masterplan. South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive (SYPTE) and the project team welcomed the Leader of Rotherham Council,
Cllr Chris Read, and Mayor of the Sheffield City Region, Dan Jarvis, together with Rotherham Bus Partnership and local businesses for a preview of the improvements at the end of last month. The Leader of Rotherham Council, Cllr Chris Read, said the newly-refurbished facility was a key part of the vision to regenerate Rotherham town centre: “This facility is one of the
major gateways into the town. It will enhance where we live, and benefit people arriving into the town centre via public transport. The refurbishment of the interchange follows the opening of the University Centre last summer. Both projects are major components of the town centre Masterplan, along with promoting sustainable travel, so it’s great to see the Masterplan progressing
as planned.” SYPTE Executive Director, Stephen Edwards, said the investment aims to encourage bus use, by providing a welcoming and accessible environment that supports the connection of people to places in the Borough and beyond: “The improved Rotherham Interchange will provide a better, brighter place for public transport users as well as those visiting,
living and working in the town. Seventeen million people travelling through the Interchange each year, using 1,299 buses a day, will now benefit from new seating, lighting, information displays, electrics and flooring, CCTV and free public wi-fi.” The temporary bus station at Forge Island is now closed and buses will run from Rotherham Interchange from now on. Changes to improve the frequency and punctuality of some services will also take place.

Council tax, water bills, TV Licences, Stamps and Prescription costs are also increasing. The start of April signals a steep hike in bill prices for households across the country. Not only are energy companies increasing prices in response to the Ofgem cap increase, a number of mobile phone providers are raising bills while Sky hikes costs for TV and broadband customers. Energy bills will be the biggest concern for many households since all of the Big Six have announced increases of 10 per
cent or more since Ofgem revealed they were raising the price cap. This will hit over 11 million customers. Water bills - The average water bill will rise by £8 a year for households across the country on April 1st. Council tax is set to increase by, on average, 5 per cent, adding £80 a year to the annual bill on the same date. The hike will vary depending on what council tax band you are in. The TV licence is also set to see a rise of £4 for a colour licence, taking the total cost to £154.50 on April 1. A black and white licence will see an increase of £1.50, bringing the yearly total to £52.

The NHS prescription charge in England is set to increase by 20p to £9 – but hundreds of thousands of patients could save by getting a ‘prescription season ticket’. Adding to the misery of rising household bills, along with postal and parking charges, the Government has announced that the price of standard prescriptions will increase from Monday 1st April, while charges for wigs and fabric supports, such as spinal supports, will rise in line with inflation. However there is a little good news
in the announcement - the cost of a prescription prepayment certificate, will be frozen at £29.10 for three months or £104 for a year. However thousands of patients who rely on ongoing medication for their conditions could save an average of almost £50 a year with a prescription prepayment certificate, and you can now get an instant digital certificate online. The charges only apply to patients in England, as prescriptions are free in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

STARS ALIGN FOR CHARITY GALA CHAMPS RELAUNCHES FOLLOWING A star-studded concert featuring Gary Barlow is raising funds for #ChallengeDerbyshire to support three end of life care charities. Hosted by the Sheffield composer and record producer Eliot Kennedy to celebrate his 50th birthday, the songwriter to the stars has invited famous friends to perform. The line-up at Sheffield City Hall includes musical theatre sensation Alfie Boe, pop legends S Club 7, and the Take That star. Gary Barlow performed at Eliot’s fundraiser two years ago for Help For Heroes, which raised more than £60,000 for the charity. Eliot’s annual charity gigs raise funds for causes close to his heart and have become the stuff of legend. #ChallengeDerbyshire supports three end of life care charities in North Derbyshire: Blythe House Hospicecare, Ashgate Hospicecare and Helen’s Trust.
Eliot said: “Over the years I’ve raised funds for charities ranging from mental well-being to animal welfare, but #ChallengeDerbyshire is one very close to my heart. I want this to be a celebration of the incredible work of these hospices and the remarkable nurses who offer light, kindness and dignity at a time we need it most. I can’t think of a better gift for my 50th year.” Eliot has sold millions of records worldwide. His first global success was
the Spice Girls single, Say You’ll Be There. Eliot’s world famous Steelworks Studio in Sheffield has been a hits factory for icons in the music world. He has worked with Stevie Wonder, Aretha Franklin, Donny Osmond, and Bryan Adams. David Hopkins, Chief Executive of M Markovitz Ltd, established #ChallengeDerbyshire in 2015. David said: “It’s an absolute thrill that Eliot has chosen to champion
our cause and support our three amazing hospices. Everyone who experiences their care and support are humbled and grateful.” #ChallengeDerbyshire has raised over £700,000 in three years and hopes to reach its £1million target in 2019. To buy tickets for Eliot Kennedy: 50th Birthday Celebration on March 29, 2019 at Sheffield City Hall, call the booking line on 0114 2789 789.
TRANSFORMATIONAL £700K INVESTMENT Champs, on Ecclesall Road in Sheffield reopened its doors over the weekend following an £700k investment by owners, Punch. Over the weekend customers new and old were welcomed with open arms to see their new pub and enjoy a whole host of entertainment. From Soccer Saturday to the Merseyside derby and ‘Champfest Live’ starring local Sheffield band ‘The Naked Everywhere’ it really was an epic weekend. The significant investment has seen the pub transformed, inside and out introducing all new furnishings, feature walls and lighting giving the pub a much more fun and contemporary feel. Champs now boasts 12 TV screens, plus a 9-screen video wall which will show all key sporting events throughout the year. As
well as hosting sporting events customers visiting Champs can enjoy a game of pool, foosball or shuffleboard. For those who might prefer playing football rather than watching, Champs has its own quirky gaming booths for a FIFA contest. The fun doesn’t end there, new Publican, Dave Aldred has huge plans to really put Champs on the map and has a real focus on making sure his customers choose Champs as the place to be for all occasions, even when the game finishes! Dave commented, ‘’I’m so excited to be taking my first venue with Punch and to have the opportunity to bring an already amazing venue back to life once again. We are passionate about this project and plan on taking Champs to the next level. We will be the number one sports bar destination
in the region and have lots of plans to bring much much more to the community’’ As well as a fantastic experiential entertainment offer and a wide range of drinks, Champs will be open for food all day with all the favourites and a burger experience food challenge which is not for the faint hearted. There will also be a Barrel and Stone pizza offer available until 10pm which can be eaten in or taken away. Managing Director of
Operations at Punch, Andy Spencer said ‘’We are proud to invest in fantastic community pubs like Champs and we are extremely pleased with the transformation of this much loved venue here in Sheffield. Dave has great plans to deliver a fantastic customer experience all year round and we look forward to working with him to ensure Champs becomes a hub for the local community to enjoy.’’

ANGLER’S CORNER
with Clint Walker
After a resounding and frustrating blank last week whilst targeting double figure carp on a club water, where I couldn’t buy a bite, never mind a fish, things have changed for the better this week! I’m pleased too, because last time out, I was absolutely slaughtered by my mate who was fishing a few pegs away, and surprisingly, he has been only too pleased to remind me! So, what changed this week? I learned from my mistakes, that’s what… I’ve been an angler for well over thirty years, but I’m not too proud to admit that I still have something to learn and that occasionally, I’m guilty of just expecting the fish to turn up rather than having to work for them. Last week, I just stuck to a tried and tested tactic, and it failed miserably, so this time, I was going to use a completely different strategy to see if it helped. A few days of lovely weather had me looking forward to getting on the bank, so you can imagine may dismay when I locked the back door in the rain… I hate setting up or packing down in the wet, but as it was my only chance to get out, I glumly set off for the waterside. I arrived to find George set up already, so we exchanged pleasantries before I mauled the barrow further down the bank. I like George, a lovely chap, he’s almost ninety years old but still gets himself to the bank to fish, and always has a kind word to say, so it’s very nice to be able to share a few moments with him and check he is doing alright, or to see if he needs anything… He didn’t, so I got to my peg and threw up the brolly to protect everything else whilst I got tackled up. With all my kit spread out, I realised I’d left my cradle in the van, so had to trudge back through the rain to get it; not the best of starts! A few minutes later, I was back under the umbrella, and tying the first rig of the day. Previously, I’d fished The Method and had nothing whilst my chum Andy hauled on pop ups, so that was my plan of attack; a
WRAGG FOOTBALL LEAGUE with A Royston
It was Semi Finals Weekend with 8 Semi Finals taking place. In the League Cup Semi last seasons winners Wickersley Old Village went through to the Final again after they beat Handsworth Parramore by 3-1, with goals from Batchelor, Barraclough and Hartley, Jepson pulling one back for Handsworth. HSBC Bank who were highly fancied to get to the final were beaten on penalties by Plough Rangers after they finished on 1-1 after extra time. In the Sid Butterfield semi finals Scawthorpe Club and Dinnington Town also ended up 1-1 after extra time so they also went to penalties, Dinnington winning this one by 6-5. Sheffield Academicals are through also to the Final after they disposed of Mosborough Trinity by 2-0. 45s Topham Cup a cracking game between HSBC Bank and Hallam 1860 with Hallam going through thanks to goal poacher Howe. A win for Wickersley Old Village means both their teams are through to the prospective Finals, they were 2-1 winners against South Kirkby Colliery with Dodsworth and Stacey scoring. In the Ernest Walker Shield Princess Royal won away at Old Edwardians by 2-0, and Ring O Bells dispatched Mosborough Trinity by 4-2. The Finals of the Cups with take place as following: Ernest Walker Memorial Shield Tuesday 2nd April at Roundwood Pavilion Parkgate Rotherham Kick off 7-00pm. League Knockout Cup Tuesday 7th May at Roundwood Pavilion Parkgate as above. Over 45s Topham Cup is on Tuesday 16th April and Sid Butterfield Memorial Trophy Tuesday 30th April with venues to be confirmed.
single bait. After baiting heavily during the previously dismal visit, I wasn’t going to introduce many freebies to see what happened. I can’t use braid on this particular water, club rules preclude it, so I attempted to make a multi-rig out of mono and slipped on a size 10 Spotted Fin wide gape hook. On the bait screw, a single 12mm Classic Corn pop up, and then a small bag of tiny pellets was nicked onto the hook. The pva bags had been drizzled with Classic Corn syrup to make them sticky and then the whole lot was gently lobbed out into the swim. I sat back to tidy up, and as I did so, the bobbin was snatched up with a shrill squeal of the alarm. It dropped back instantly, so I reckoned the bait had been inhaled, but had failed to find purchase; I retrieved it to inspect it, then added another bag of pellets, and flicked it back out. Minutes later, and the same thing happened. Two aborted runs meant that the rig wasn’t working properly, so it was changed for a fluorocarbon ‘D-rig’, another pop up screwed on and pinned to the deck with one of the excellent Dinsmores Grippa Styx and recast. I catapulted a few pellets over the top, and retired beneath the shelter to drink more tea… I had to wait for about forty minutes before the bobbin lifted once more. A slow take during which the indicator twitched a couple of times before the alarm sounded saw me lift into the first fish of the day, a chunky double figure common carp of around 12lb. This fish had fallen to the single brightly coloured pop up which was just visible beyond the hook; perfect. Once matted, the carp was swiftly unhooked, then returned to the cold water to swim away, the rig was reset, and I fired a pinch of pellets to surround it. It’s difficult to get much bait in at times on this water as the resident waterfowl fear no man and will clear a spot as fast as you can get it in… pesky things! Over the next few hours, regular runs resulted in ten double figure carp in the net, a mixture of dark commons, beautifully armoured mirrors and a pretty silver-grey ghost carp, all of which had tripped up over the 12mm pop up, before Premier Division Caribbean Sports were 4-1 winners against Royston Oakwood. Pyecroft, Stocks, Cookson and Willis. Fossils FC also won beating Swinton Athletic by 4-1. Smith 2, Fothergill, and an own goal. Division 1 Just a couple of games both resulting in home wins. Denaby United won 2-1 against Bullcroft S&P with Haynes and Light on Target. Rossington Main also won 2-1 this was against Penistone Church, Lewin and Mullins finding the net. Division 2 Doncaster Over 35s maintained top spot ater they beat Jubilee Sports by 2-0, Cartlidge and Jones scoring. Hollingwood Old Boys also continued their push for the top after they were 2-1 victors against Dronfield Town, Dove and Weatherall, with Thew scoring for Dronfield. East Herrigthorpe and Clowne Wanderers fought out a thriller with Herringthorpe running out winners by 4-2. Tunstall 3 and Cusack scoring, L. Cameron and R.Cameron for Clowne. High Green Vets drew 2-2 with AFC Dronfield. Storey, scoring twice for Vets and Chasemore doing likewise for Dronfield with a double Oughtibridge are still looking for that elusive winning formular after they were beaten at home by Hemsworth Miners, Mayer 2, Bainbridge and Goodall. 45s Division 1 Elsecar Dynamoes slipping to a suprise defeat at home to Phoenix FC, Parkinson and Galvin for Dynamoes. Fossils Fc were comfortable wnners against Sheffield Auror by 6-1, Robinson 2, Boland, Hoosen,Green and Oliver, Jevons pulling one back for Aurora. 45s Division 2 a goaless draw between Penistone Church and Denaby United.

I connected with the eleventh run. I played the fish back towards the waiting net, keeping the tip high to cushion any last second lunges as the 2lb test curve rod absorbed the battle. I use a light rod here to prevent fish losses, a result of an experiment a couple of years ago which saw a lot of fish bounced when using higher test curve rods, so winning fish are now rare. Having said that, I got lucky with this one though, because as it approached the net, a final kick saw it flick the hook, and a couple of ounces of lead came screaming back at me as the rod recovered! I managed to get an arm up to deflect the blow, but it still left a super bruise! Good job I’m a ninja! By the end of the day as the rain continued to teem down, I had fifteen quality carp, all falling to the tiny yellow pop ups, so I was contemplating packing up. As I got up to stow the gear, a final run screamed away and a last fish was hooked. This one turned out to be a lovely barbel, perhaps of 5-6lb, one of the many quality barbel which reside within this stillwater. I’d prefer to catch them from the river, but I would never turn my nose up at such
powerful fish, and it was a nice way to end the day. Overall, instead of using a couple of kilos of particle mix and groundbait like the week before, I’d gone through about three ounces of pellets and I think I used four boilies! A change in tactics had seen a much better day on the bank, and it just goes to show that sometimes you have to do things differently to succeed… I won’t be so complacent next time!

It was a busy start to March in The County Senior League with games taking place in the League Cup, Brain Bradley Memorial Trophy, as well as the usual league fixture schedule. League Cup Quarter Final Stocksbridge Park Steels Development of Division Two claimed the result of the day, as they knocked-out Jubilee Sports of the Premier Division. The tie was 1-1 after 90 minutes, and the teams were still level at 2-2 after extratime, but Stocksbridge held their nerve to win the tie 4-1 on penalties. Brian Bradley Memorial Trophy Quarter Final Dodworth Miners Welfare were the first team to book their place in the Brian Bradley Memorial Trophy Semi Finals. They were 3-2 winners at Wales High School against in-form Kiveton Park. Brian Bradley Memorial Trophy 2nd Round It was third bottom of the Premier Division against third top of Division One at Oliver’s Mount, where Handsworth Parramore Reserves hosted Ecclesfield Red Rose 1915. The game was as tight as expected, with Handsworth running out 1-0 winners. Sheffield Union of Division Two claimed the scalp of Millmoor Juniors of Division One, by beating them 3-0 at Norton Playing Fields. The Union were rewarded with a quarter final tie at home to Hepworth United of the Premier Division. Also at Norton Playing Fields, Oughtibridge WMSC beat Sheffield Bankers 5-0 to set up a tie against Houghton Main at the end of the month. Premier Division North Gawber Colliery took advantage of their title rivals not playing to move five points clear the top of the Premier Division. Liam Marsden and Matthew Thornton both scored twice
to give North Gawber a 4-1 home win over Wombwell Main. Fifth placed Frecheville hosted sixth placed Penistone Church Reserves at Davy Sports Club, and the table proved to be true, with Penistone taking the three points with a 3-1 win. Division One AFC Dronfield maintained their three point lead at the top of Division One, after a 3-1 away win over Caribbean Sports. Burngreave FC are their new nearest challengers though, as they moved into second thanks to a 2-1 away win over Denaby Main. Burngreave have played three less games than Dronfield going into the run-in. Goals from Brad Kerr and Haydn Musgrave gave in-form Houghton Main a 2-1 win over Wombwell Main Reserves. Houghton Main remain in fourth place, but trail the leaders by only eight points, with a two games spare. Hemsworth Miners Welfare Reserves ended a run of back-to-back defeats, with a 3-2 win over Boynton Sports at Killamarsh Juniors Football Ground. Division Two Fourth placed Dodworth Miners Welfare Reserves made it back-to-back 4-0 home wins, as they saw-off AFC Dronfield Reserves on Saturday. New Bohemians were beaten 5-2 last week by Thurcroft Miners Institute, however they flipped the result in their favour this weekend, with a 5-2 win of their own away against Worsbrough Bridge Athletic Development. Swinton Athletic Reserves ended a run of three straight losses in all competitions, with a 3-0 win over Thurcroft Miners Institute at Swinton Miners Welfare.

five points behind the Addicks with a game in hand, and Downing says there is a real focus on making sure that play-off place is cemented as the squad look to move up a gear. “We all came in a bit disappointed after that, especially because of how we started, but we always want to win at home and we haven’t managed to do that here, if we want to be up where we want to be then we need to start winning more games at home,” he added. “We spoke before the game about the amount Defender Paul Downing felt Rovers showed of games that we do have left this season, character to come back from behind to we’re approaching it like a mini season in earn a point in Saturday’s game against itself and we’re taking things a game at a fellow Sky Bet League One promotion time, we’ve fought hard to get where we are, chasers Charlton Athletic. and now we’re looking to step it up. Grant McCann praised his side’s grit and determination, believing Rovers showed a different side of their game in the 1-1 draw with play-off rivals Charlton Athletic. Charlton sit one place ahead of Rovers in the Sky Bet League One table and the visitors took the lead when John Marquis’ mistimed header meant he put the ball in the back of his own net. Mallik Wilks evened things up with a solo effort at the other end just four minutes later. “I thought it was a good game between two good teams. We didn’t start the best but when our backs are against the wall this team has another gear and we showed that again,” said McCann “What I saw in the second half is a team that wants to fight and wants to win, and who greet these opportunities when they come along. I was really pleased with the response: we went for it, got on the front foot, and were positive. We had to defend well too because Charlton have good players who can break quickly against you. “We matched them for spells, they were on top, we were on top, it was almost like a boxing match. standards, we want to be on top for 90 minutes but when you’re playing a team like Charlton that’s not always possible, it means that when you are on top you have to take your chance and I think we did with the goal, it was a great finish from Mallik. We finished the game strongly. The goalkeeper made unbelievable saves from John and Aaron, and then Alfie May had a good chance and Tommy had the ball in the net.” McCann felt his side did enough to win the game and in the sixth minute of added time, it looked like Tommy Rowe had done just that with a goal right at the death when he headed home. The celebrations were cut short by an assistant referee’s flag in a decision McCann felt could have gone the other way. “I’m disappointed because five major decisions went against us in that game, five one-on-ones: the Mallik one-v-one, John’s goal, John’s one-v-one that he missed, Matty when he was running through, and then the goal at the end. “The emphasis is on us to win at home, I think we did enough to win the game and we could have won if those decisions had gone our way. I was proud of my team, I was proud of their effort, intensity, pressing and the aggression they showed. We’ll need that when we play AFC Wimbledon next because they are fighting for their lives.”

BRUCE: IT WAS A TYPICAL DERBY AFFAIR Steve Bruce enjoyed his first taste of the Steel City derby on Monday night – the occasion if not the game as a spectacle. A passionate crowd of
over 31,000 witnessed a goalless draw at Hillsborough as the Owls and the Blades ultimately cancelled each out. And Bruce tagged the
contest as a ‘typical derby affair’ speaking to swfc.co.uk post-match: “There was a huge amount of noise out there tonight, it was a pretty awful night with
the weather, and I think what was missing was that bit of quality. “It was frantic football and they gave everything, that is for sure.
“We’ve had the best chance of the game and Sam’s really disappointed in there because I don’t think he was expecting that ball to reach him.
“Either side of the goal and it’s in but hey, they had a good chance too and overall, a point each is about right from what was a typical derby affair.”

Going into this game I have to say it was the most optimistic I have felt for a long time. One defeat in 12 since Luhukay’s departure, while looking stronger in every performance in Bruce. Under the previous manager we stuck 11 players behind the ball and prayed that United couldn’t break us down. Tonight was different. Yes we defended deep and allowed United to attack, however the main difference was we actually looked to counter attack at every opportunity. For both sides chances were at a premium. Madine came the closest to scoring against his former club. But this was the closest United came to scoring all game, and that was in the 7th minute. Arguably the biggest chance for the Owls fell to Hutchinson. Latching onto a great cross from Aarons. Only to hit it straight at Henderson. The whole game was tense with both

sides trying not to make any mistakes. Leading to very little risk taking. Including in the tackles leading to a very surprising stat of no bookings. Once again The Owls defence was immense. The partnership of Hector and Lees is really taking shape. If FFP allows, Hector must be at the top of our shopping list in the summer transfer window. Fletcher worked hard up front, with Bannan and Hutchinson working tirelessly in the middle. Hopefully the injury to Forestieri wasn’t a bad one as he will be key if there is to be a successful end to the campaign. Overall a battling performance with the 0-0 score line a fair reflection of the game. Another big game coming up at the weekend against Derby. A must win if we are looking to be play off contenders at the end of the season.

ANOTHER DERBY STALEMATE For the second time this season, it finished goalless in the Sheffield derby, with Wednesday frustrating the Blades at Hillsborough. In a game of few chances, Gary Madine had United’s best, only to be denied by Kieron Westwood, whilst Dean Henderson produced an excellent reflex save to deny Sam Hutchinson in the second period. For the trip across the city, Wilder made three changes, with O’Connell, Basham and Madine all named in the starting XI. Cranie and McGoldrick dropped to the bench, with Johnson missing out. After a quiet opening, it was the Blades through Madine who had the first chance of the game on seven minutes, Norwood’s inch perfect cross found the head of Madine at the back
post, but Westwood somehow kept the ball out of the net. The game had really opened up, with United forcing four quick corners and Wednesday enjoying a couple of their own. The rain continued to fall from the Hillsborough skies and referee Bankes was seemingly missing a number of fouls in the Blades favour, with Freeman, Madine and Sharp amongst those to be upended. As half-time approached, Hector was punished twice in quick succession for blatant fouls on Madine, from the second of those freekicks, Egan headed over at the near post, having got a run on his marker. Wednesday made a change at the break with Boyd replacing Forestieri. United almost made the perfect start to the second-half, but Sharp couldn’t
get the ball under control after Fleck had got the better of Hutchinson. At the other end, Fletcher went for an acrobatic effort from Boyd’s left-wing cross, but in sailed high and wide. The Blades pressed forward again moments later, Freeman and Basham combined on the right and the right laid it back for Norwood who sent an effort towards goal, but unfortunately Sharp couldn’t get what would have been a telling touch. Wednesday responded, Reach did well on the right before Aarons forced Henderson into a save from Hutchinson’s deep cross. In the 62nd minute, Dowell was replaced by Cranie, a substitution that saw Basham advance into midfield. But three minutes later, it was Henderson who was required to keep the scores level. Aarons
advanced forward from Fletcher’s pass and Hutchinson from a central position saw United’s number one deny him from point-blank range. With 22 minutes left to play, Madine was replaced by McGoldrick. And the substitute looked a threat twice in quick succession, winning a corner on the second occasion, from which Westwood flapped and the Owls scrambled clear. Cranie then got the better of Bannan, but Hector blocked at the expense of another corner. Two minutes of injury-time were signalled and Aarons fired harmless over the bar with the last action of note as the spoils were shared for a second time this season.

2018/19 “NOT A GREAT GAME”
Chris Wilder acknowledged Monday’s Sheffield derby at Hillsborough wasn’t a ‘great game’. But the Blades boss still praised his side despite the goalless stalemate on a wet and blustery evening at S6. He remarked:”It was a tough place to come, it’s obviously changed since Steve (Bruce) came into the football club. They’ve got some really good footballers and they’ve now got a good manager, so they’ve got the opportunity to be successful and have a go and they did that. I’ve no complaints, but I’m praising my team for consistently turning up for the last three seasons. We always try and win games, if we are at our best we usually get a positive result, if we aren’t it
doesn’t always come off.” Wilder added: “But we’ve got a consistent level of commitment and attitude which allows us to win games and that’s why we’ve done really well, but we have to move on to a tough game on Saturday. Over the last twelve or thirteen games we are the form team in the division, so we are playing well. This was a bitty game, littered with fouls and it was never really given the chance to fire. There was a lack of quality between both sides, despite there been several top-quality individuals on both sides. When David McGoldrick came on and we played with a ‘ten’ and a ‘nine’ it gave us that bit more control, but it was stop start and it wasn’t a great game.”
