RHIANNA TAKES THE SHORT CUT TO LIFE ON STAGE You could say that young singer Rhianna Burnage is taking the short cut to theatre stardom. For as student and music

teacher Rhianna prepares to make her debut with Sheffield’s Dore Gilbert and Sullivan Society she has decided to go for a crop - and support a

good cause! Rhianna, who lives in Upperthorpe and is studying for a degree in music and modern languages with the Open University as well as studying with the famous Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance in London, had not had her hair cut since the age of four, leaving her with a mane that trailed to her knees. But when she joined the chorus of Dore Gilbert and Sullivan Society’s forthcoming production of classic operetta The Yeomen of the Guard she decided it was time to opt for a much more manageable bob.

And the hair that was once her pride and joy is now being donated to The Little Princess Trust , the organisation that provides real hair wigs free of charge to children and young people up to the age of 24, who have lost their own hair due to cancer treatment and other conditions. “It was just one of those spur of the moment decision but one that I’m glad I took,” Rhianna explained. “It was a night when I couldn’t sleep so I was browsing on the internet and found the Little Princess website. “My mum had cancer a couple of years ago so

it’s a subject that’s close to the family. “When I looked more closely I realised I had enough hair to make two full wigs so I made an appointment straight away and came out with much shorter hair and two full plaits to send to the Little Princess Trust.”

Dore Gilbert and Sullivan Society present classic operetta The Yeomen of the Guard at the Merlin Theatre, Meadowbank Road, Nether Edge, from April 10 to 13. For tickets call 0114 2363797 or visit doregass.weebly.com/ tickets

COMPOSTING CAMPAIGN LAUNCHED A major campaign is being launched to encourage more people in South Yorkshire to help the environment by composting their kitchen and garden waste. The Barnsley, Doncaster and Rotherham (BDR) Waste Partnership are organising competitions with prizes to get homes, schools and community groups started. There will be a poster competition for schools and a social media competition for residents.

Plastic compost bins are effective and easy to set up, and available at most DIY stores and online. Rotherham residents can also order discounted compost bins via the Council website. Ideally compost bins should be placed on bare soil in a reasonably sunny area. If you have to compost on concrete or hard ground, place a layer of paper and twigs at the bottom to help worms and other creatures colonise the bin and help the composting process. Feed the compost bin

with a 50/50 mixture of brown and green materials. Brown materials include egg shells, cereal and tea packets, egg boxes and scrunched up thin cardboard. Green materials include fruit waste, tea bags, cut flowers, and vegetable peelings. It takes between nine and 12 months for the compost to become ready for use. Once it is, it can be used extensively in the garden, including flowerbeds, around trees, in patio containers and on fruit and vegetable patches. Although the waste

treatment facility at Manvers diverts 96% of Barnsley, Doncaster and Rotherham household waste from landfill, composting at home gets more use out of garden waste, saves space in bins and money on fertilisers for the garden. Community Education Liaison Officer based at Manvers, Rebecca Wilson, said: “It’s a win win situation because it’s beneficial for the environment and your pocket. It builds on our previous successful campaigns, Love Food Hate

Waste, and National Recycling Week.” Infant and junior school children in Barnsley, Doncaster and Rotherham will have the opportunity to design a poster to promote composting at their school and at home. Six schools will win a compost bin and gardening equipment. This will be followed by a social media competition for residents of Barnsley, Doncaster and Rotherham with the chance for participants to win their own compost bin.

My friends all claim I’m the cheapest person they’ve ever met. I don’t buy it! My boss hates it when I shorten his name to Dick. Especially when his name is Steve. I was having trouble fastening my seatbelt... .... and then it just clicked. My wife bought me a hideous leather jacket, but I don’t mind wearing it. I’m easily suede. Just got back from a job interview where I was asked if I could perform under pressure. I said I wasn’t too sure about that but I do a wicked Bohemian Rhapsody. As I get older and remember all the people I lost along the way, I think to myself... Maybe a career as a tour guide was not the right choice. Yesterday my brother accidentally swallowed some weed killer. Fortunately he saw the fungicide.

Sheffield’s biggest ever party, Tramlines Festival, has announced a second wave of acts to appear at the 2019 event from Friday 19th – Sunday 21st July at Hillsborough Park. The latest additions include Johnny Marr, Annie Mac, Tom Grennan, Drenge, The Futureheads, Jade Bird, Becky Hill, The Japanese House, Good Cop Bad Cop, She Drew The Gun, JAWS, Marsicans, Blackwaters, October Drift, Balcony, Man & The Echo, and a handful of breaking bands curated by This Feeling for the emerging talent ‘Library Stage’. Crowds of 30,000 are expected to turn out for the 11th edition of Tramlines which boasts four stages of music, an outdoor cinema, comedy line up and much more besides. With a genre spanning line up of the internationally acclaimed to the hottest new acts, Tramlines is one of the UK’s most popular and longest running city-based festivals. Weekend tickets are seriously good value priced from £69.50 plus booking fee, and available from www.tramlines.org.uk. Formerly a multi-venue, inner-city festival, Tramlines evolved in 2018 and took place across a single, greenfield site, situated in the lush surroundings of Hillsborough Park, with views across the city. The highest quality line ups remain as important as ever to the team behind Tramlines. Already announced for 2019 are headliners Two Door Cinema Club, Courteeners, Niles Rodgers & Chic, plus Manic Street Preachers, Rag’n’Bone Man, Doves, Happy Mondays, Reverend and The Makers, Miles Kane, Circa Waves, Lewis Capaldi, Shame and lots more. Its credibility as a must-visit music festival continues to rise and the latest wave is another statement of intent. Leading the phase two announcement are Johnny

Marr, best known as the guitarist and – with Morrissey – co-songwriter of the Smiths, and queen of the beats on Radio1, Annie Mac. From jangly guitars to phat basslines, these are not-to-missed performances. Other just-added booking highlights include, Tom Grennan who roadblocked the Leadmill tent at Tramlines last year with tracks from his hit ‘Lighting Matches’ album; Sheffield brother-duo Drenge who’ve just dropped new album ‘Strange Creatures’; and the newly reformed The Futureheads who’ll be pleasing post punk fans everywhere. Tramlines is also excited to bring Jade Bird to the line up. Her track ‘Cathedral’ rightfully won her a place on the 2018 BBC Sound Of list, as did ‘Face For Thunder’ in 2017 by The Japanese House who’ll also appear at Tramlines fronted by the much-buzzedabout, Amber Bain. Singer / songwriter Becky Hill also joins the bill, best known for her string of charttopping hits including those with Rudimental, MK, and Little Simz; as do Sheffield super-group Good Cop Bad Cop - the new project from Arctic Monkeys’ Matt Helders and pal Joe Carnall of Milburn. Year on year, Tramlines continues to showcase the best acts from the UK’s emerging talent scene. This year the new talent bill spans sounds from indie punk to psych pop and everything in between, featuring She Drew The Gun, JAWS, Marsicans, BlackWaters, October Drift, Balcony, and Man & The Echo. More breaking talent has been lined up by ‘This Feeling’ - the club for future rock and roll stars. They have curated the Friday line up for the ‘Library Stage’ where their handpicked selections of the most exciting acts from this scene will play, including Rum Club, Himalayas, Planet, The Estevans and The Rosadocs. Whilst the Tramlines line up gets bigger each year, it remains seriously good value for money. Tickets are now on fourth tier and priced from £69.50 plus booking fee for all three days. VIP upgrade tickets are available for an additional £50 granting access to the private VIP area situated right next to the main stage with private bars, food stalls and toilets. Under 12s go for free. For full ticketing info, visit www.tramlines. org.uk.

The New Moon in Aries is wonderful in helping you to rejuvenate your personal image or approach to life. Yet when it comes to professional relationships or in situations where you want to impress, it’s going to be important not to try too hard this week. Call for more astral advice...

Jupiter, in your sign, is in conflict all week with Pluto the planet of transformation, which has created such an impact in your personal life in the last nine years. This can see you being much more strident around what you want from situations, particularly linked to your home or family life. Call for more...

There may be a sensitive issue which needs to be dealt with. With Mercury moving into your sign and your ruler close to reversing into a more sociable area, as well as the support of the strident duo Mars and Pluto, you can find yourself on the front foot as the week comes to a close. Call for more...

Something could be revealed this week which rather surprises you. But then again, it could be you who makes the revelation. However, it will be important to try to avoid any compulsion to confront someone with a side of themselves that you may find tricky, but they’re unaware of. Call for more...

You can burst into this new week feeling full of optimism for what the future can hold and long-term plans can shape up well. Yet the pattern that’s been largely evident through much of this month is going to subtly but powerfully alter. All this could give you quite a lot of food for thought. Call for more...

Jupiter gives you that innate sense that everything will turn out well. But this week an antagonistic angle with Pluto in your sector of values, suggests that the happy-go-lucky approach may not sit well with someone you encounter, and it could be a friend. Stay grounded Archer. Call for more...

Jupiter is squaring up to Pluto, the planet of power. This may see someone close to you overstate their perspective on a situation, or tempt you into doing the same. With the New Moon emphasizing your natural authority, the trick is going to be in finding the right balance. Call for more...

Your view of a situation may clash quite starkly with someone else. This may reveal itself more than anywhere in a professional situation. If you can add a touch of wit to such discussions, what could seem rather daunting can actually turn into a much more productive conversation. Call for more...

The desire to broaden your horizons is going to continue and it can be new interests, people and travel that fascinate you most. There may though be a tendency to agree to something which you could later regret, so try not to be too impulsive Leo. Call for more news and astral advice...

You can enter this week determined to stay on the front foot. Do though look to stay connected to the more emotional side of yourself and your situation. Doing so can balance your hopes and ideas, and keep you grounded. Any plans to improve your abode or move could get the green light. Call for more...

There could be a temptation to splash out on someone you are drawn to, or a loved one. However, a big gesture may not necessarily render the response you would like. In general, look to marshal your resources in an enterprising way, but avoid taking big risks. Call for more astral advice...

You could have a sense that your financial situation is finally travelling in a much more positive direction. Your long-term picture continues to be supported by Jupiter. But having realistic hopes is important too. If all this is well balanced, progress is possible as the week wears on. Call for more...

GIVE YOUR HOME A SPRING HEALTH CHECK Spring is finally here! It’s a great time for homeowners to give their home a ‘health check’ after the harsh winter weather, according to NHBC, the UK’s leading insurance and warranty provider for new build homes. Most homeowners only think about the health of their property when selling, however regular checks inside and outside the home can avoid potential problems. People living in houses built in the last ten years will typically have to deal with less maintenance, as the build quality and energy efficiency of new homes today is far more advanced to that of older properties. NHBC has worked consistently over the years to raise the construction standards of new homes whilst providing its leading Buildmark policy to new homebuyers. In its latest guidance to homeowners, NHBC advises carrying out at least a yearly review of their property to help keep everything in order and protect their investment. Areas worth checking are: Inside • Heating system: As the weather gets warmer, adjust central heating to a summer setting to save energy. This is a good time to bleed radiators too, to get rid of air pockets. It is recommended that boilers should be serviced each year, to ensure that it is working with maximum performance and safety. Contact a Gas

Safe certified installer to carry out an annual check now when engineers are less busy. • Smoke detectors: If detectors run on batteries, these should be checked and replaced if necessary. All detectors should be replaced after ten years. • Renew bathroom seals: It’s important to keep the silicon around the bathtub in good condition to prevent mould and stop water getting below and causing damage. Restoring seals is an easy weekend job. All you need to do is remove all the old sealant using a Stanley knife, clean the area, then apply masking tape to the area above and below where you want the silicone to go. Remember to apply the new sealant with the bath full of cold water — the weight will ensure that the sealant doesn’t crack. • Home security: Check the locks on all doors and windows, to see if they are in working order. • Taps: Dripping taps waste vast amounts of water. They may need the old washer changing for a new one. • Locate and inspect your stopcock: In the event of a burst pipe, knowing where your stopcock is located could save you hundreds of pounds! They are usually located where your water supply pipe enters your house, commonly under the kitchen sink. Make sure it’s working properly and you can turn it on and off easily. It’s good to do this every 6

months. Outside • Roofing: Your roof is the most exposed part of your house, and it takes a hammering from the winter weather. Look at your roof from the outside, to see if any tiles are cracked or have slipped; these will need replacing by a professional roofer. • Guttering: Check for damage and clear away blockages that may have accumulated over the winter months. Blockages can be bad news and lead to water damage, so make sure guttering is cleared at least once a year. For safety reasons, this should be carried out by a professional. • Woodwork: This needs preserving against weather conditions. Timber windows and doors need repainting every three to five years; make a painting plan to action in the drier summer months. • Garden fencing: This provides homes with security, therefore it is important to check garden fencing for any damage and maintain its good condition. A quick home health check will identify areas that need attention and catch problems at an early stage. Carrying out regular maintenance ensures a home is kept in good condition, making it more pleasant to live in, more energy efficient and cheaper to run, and increasing its residual value.

DRIVE SAFER FOR LONGER - TIPS FOR OLDER DRIVERS 250 LOCAL VOLUNTEERS ROAD SAFETY and breakdown ask where, when and why they occur. organisation GEM Motoring Assist Learning from those situations, perhaps HELP COMIC RELIEF says older drivers can stay safer for with some expert help, is a good way longer by reflecting on their driving, and by knowing where they can get expert safety advice. The statement follows the release of figures from the DVLA showing that almost 22,500 elderly motorists had their licences revoked on medical grounds in 2018. “Reaching a certain age does not automatically mean a complete loss of your ability to drive, judge distances and read road signs,” says GEM road safety officer Neil Worth. “Today two thirds of people aged 70 and over still hold a driving licence, compared with less than 40 per cent in the mid 1990s. The process of ageing is different for every single person. That’s why GEM is keen to encourage senior drivers to reflect on their own driving, to understand where they may be experiencing difficulty, and to know where to get practical advice. Traditional popular opinion might suggest that older drivers are a menace and should undergo mandatory retests – or be purged from the highway. However, we want to encourage senior drivers to stay mobile, while also ensuring they remain physically and mentally comfortable with the driving task. Self-reflection starts with an acceptance that we’re all more vulnerable on the road than we think we are,” concludes Neil Worth. “It includes a willingness to recognise the situations that may lead to increased risk, and to

0114 243 3933 the amazing community of colleagues at Irwin Mitchell, and their family and friends, I’m thrilled that we were able to make it a night to remember. Seeing so many people from across Sheffield give up their time and pull together as a team was something I will never forget. Thanks to everyone who took part, we really hope we can do it again next year.” Comic Relief was founded in 1985 by the comedy scriptwriter Richard Curtis and comedian Lenny Henry in response to famine in Ethiopia. Wedding Guide

QUOTES FOR YOUR WEDDING DAY If you’re really struggling for ways to decorate your wedding, framed prints with beautiful quotes are a great way to fill space, and can put a smile on your guests’ faces more than expensive large floral displays. There are some really beautiful quotes you could use. You could say something short like ‘I always new it was you’ or ‘the best is yet to come.’ Be especially romantic and don’t let your other half know about the quotes! Other longer quotes that are really special include ‘And I’d choose you, in a hundred lifetimes, in a hundred worlds, in any version of reality. I’d find you and I’d

choose you.’ You can create the quote boards yourself as big or small as you may like, perhaps propped up on an easel, or you can ask your stationer for quotes for really pretty boards if it’s something they offer. A great short poem you could use is ‘From this day forward, you shall not walk alone. My heart will be your shelter, and my arms will be your home.’ If you’d prefer to be a little unconventional, use song lyrics from your favourite bands especially during the evening like ‘I bet that you look good on the dance floor.’ If you want to quote someone famous, we love ‘Whatever our souls are made of, his and mine are the same’ by Emily Bronte, or ‘The best thing to hold onto in life is each other’ by Audrey Hepburn. Want to be a bit funny? How about ‘Sweet dreams are made of cheese, who am I to diss a Brie? I cheddar the world and the feta cheese, everybody’s looking for Stilton’ if you’re having a cheese table or cake! Other funny quotes include ‘trust me, you can dance – alcohol’ or ‘prohibition ends here’ for signs around the bar? Just have fun and fill your wedding with pretty writing!

ROXY REVELLERS – LOCAL AUTHOR NEEDS YOUR PHOTOS AND MEMORIES! The after dark antics of clubbers from Sheffield’s legendary Roxy venue are set to be on view to the world in a few week’s time. Their pictures and memories are set to adorn the pages of a forthcoming book and play centre-stage at a ‘Back To The Roxy’ reunion party held at the 02 Academy on Saturday, May 4th. Local author Neil Anderson is putting the call out for photos and memories from the venue that dominated the club scene for much of the 1980s and 1990s for a brand new Roxy edition of his best-selling ‘Dirty Stop Out’s Guide to 1980s Sheffield’. The very best pictures will also adorn the big screen at the reunion which is set to trans-

port clubbers back to the heyday of the venue in a few week’s time. Neil Anderson said: “Photos weren’t so common in the era before the smart phone so we’re having to work extra hard to encourage people to dig into their photo albums and help us remember what life was like at the venue.” With a capacity in

excess of 2,000, and one of the most jawdropping lightshows in the country, few venues attracted more revellers than Sheffield’s sprawling Roxy nightclub. The venue became famous nationally as a base for the ‘Hitman & Her’ TV series. ‘Back to the Roxy’ is set to be one of the city’s biggest reunion parties in recent years. As well as the

dance-inspired sounds that thousands would dance to every Friday and Saturday on the Roxy dancefloor, the event also offers a room two celebrating the venue’s Rock Night that used to run every Monday. Room three hosts Electro ‘80s – a celebration of the sounds of the era. Roxy photos and memories can be sent to: neil@dirtystopouts.com

ROCKIN’ THE DON VALLEY BOWL THIS SEPTEMBER Not since 1993 has an open air rock event been held in the Steel City when Def Leppard and Thunder topped the bill to over 40,000 people at the now sadly demolished Don Valley Stadium. Twenty five years later rock is back in Don Valley, not at the stadium but within the 8,000 capacity grass bowl, as icon British rockers The Wildhearts headline the main stage along with other up and coming U.K. bands including Trucker Diablo and Aaron Buchanan. With two stages and around a dozen acts confirmed so far, many of them local, this special event has all the trademarks of being a fantastic one day event and as a nod towards Sheffield’s proud industrial heritage, this event will be ‘forged in hell’ and promises to be a day not to be missed.

Taking place on Saturday September 14th tickets are priced at £20 with free admission for under 14s. Full line-up details and more information is available on the website www.rockinthebowl. co.uk

ANGLER’S CORNER

with Clint Walker

I blanked last week, a poor choice of water made for an uncomfortable session hanging on beneath a snapping brolly amidst gusting gales and slanting rain, but this week has been even worse; I didn’t get to go fishing at all! A combination of new job, disgusting weather conditions, and grandchildren with lurgy saw me babysitting when I should have been on the bank during the only spare hours I had this week, but it wasn’t to be… So, what can I write about this week? Rozemeijer. I bet you’ve never heard of the brand, but it’s now here in the UK, courtesy of an agreement between the Dutch holding company, and Jonathan Greenall, head of PB Products to distribute the products. The brand was launched in the Netherlands, rapidly becoming established and a firm favourite of lure anglers not just in Holland, but quickly finding traction across Europe as anglers recognised the quality of product, and retailers were pleased with ease of supply. Jonathan noted the reputation, liked what he saw, and with an infrastructure already in place, saw the potential in an agreement with Rozemeijer. I first got to know Jonathan some years ago after meeting at the Carp Society Winter Show, and we discussed all things fishing. He fortunately noted my lure fishing, had read a few of my blogs and reviews, and last year, got in touch to ask if he could send me some products to get some honest feedback before making a commitment; I was only too pleased to help! By any amount of the imagination, I’m not a lure fishing expert by any means, but I do know enough to see if the kit is suited to UK waters and the predator scene. I’ve qualified and fished in the British Lure Angling Championship finals held on Chew Reservoir in very esteemed company, and I know some lads I could show the new brand too to see what they thought, so I eagerly awaited the delivery to see what would arrive… A couple of weeks later, the postman brought a box full of bits, all stamped with the distinctive

‘R’ logo which is subtly stamped on all Rozemeijer products and I eagerly rummaged through to see what had turned up. I prefer lure fishing with soft baits and was delighted to find a small range of paddle tails, split tails and other lures, all highly detailed, and available in a decent range of colours and patterns. Pleasingly, the paddle tails all featured a huge tail which thuds through the water enticingly when fishing… these have swiftly become a real favourite! They were all pliable too, unlike many lures which have to be dropped in red hot water to change the structure and get any movement at all, but were also ‘meaty’ enough to withstand more than one onslaught from the teeth of a predator. There were a number of essential tools too, including a combined split ring/braid cutter and a dedicated braid cutter, both of which were exceptionally sharp, but also strong too, with no deflection when opening the strongest of split rings, and you’ll need them too; the quality of fittings on the hard lures I received need a something with some ‘grunt’ to open them! A small tackle and bits box was supplied with removable dividers, a see through ‘tuff’ plastic lid with extra strong hinges and fastening, so that was another winner, and a variety of other items included trace wire, (titanium) stingers, heavy fluorocarbon traces, rig bits, and much more. The hard lures were indeed things of beauty! Rozemeijer don’t muck about; if you want something for a pike to get its teeth into, then the vast range of hard lures has something for you, and like many anglers, I’ll buy them because I like them as much as the fish! As an aside, it was nice to see that every one of the super sharp trebles was fitted with a sturdy guard to protect your fingers which snapped on and stayed on until removed instead of just falling off! Jonathan has plans to bring the complete range to the UK, including rods and reels, luggage and clothing and much more, so if I’ve tickled your taste buds, then why not take a look at the Facebook social media page (Rozemeijer UK) and if you are a retailer looking to add a quality account, hit the ‘contact us’ button too!

WRAGG FOOTBALL LEAGUE with A Royston

Once again the recent heavy rain caused chaos with the League Fixtures, with only 4 games being played out of a possible 15. In the Premier League Sheffield Academicals suffered a heavy defeat against Fossils FC by 7-3, Fossils scorers were Fothergill 3, P.Smith 2, L. Smith and Davies. Down to Division 1 where only Rossington Main played as they defeated West End Terriers by 3-2. Henderson, Simm and Ridley scoring their goals. In Division 2 we managed two matches, Oughtibridge War Memorial suffered a big defeat at the hands of Clowne Wanderers by 9-2, Cameron and Slinn both claiming hat tricks, Heath 2 and Drury with two consolation goals for Oughtibridge coming from Ashford and Oldfield. In the battle of the bottom two teams it was Woodhouse West End who emerged the victors by 4-0,Mitchell 2, McPherson and Atkins. There isn’t much to write about this week so I thought it would be a good idea to look at the leading scorers in each division.

COUNTY SENIOR FOOTBALL with Michael Clarke

Sadly the weather across the region for the past 10 days is beginning to take its toll on the pitches in the County Senior League leading to a lot of postponements this weekend. Luckily a handful of league games did manage to go ahead and there was great news for North Gawber Colliery in the Senior Cup. S&HCFA Senior Cup Semi-Final There is only one place to start this week and that is at Muglet Lane on Wednesday, where Premier Division leaders North Gawber Colliery travelled to face Maltby Main, two steps higher on the football pyramid. It was a tight game, but a with a bit of hard-work in the end the quality that North Gawber have been displaying all season in the County Senior League shone through, as a strike from substitute Robert Cartwright was enough to give North Gawber a 1-0 win. North Gawber will face Frickley Athletic, who beat Staveley Miners Welfare 2-0, in the final at Bramall Lane.

Premier Division Three games survived the rain in the Premier Division. The most significant came at St George’s Park, where High Green Villa beat Jubilee Sports 2-0 thanks to a brace from Michael Vella. The three points are vital for High Green and lift them out of the bottom two to fourth bottom. Defending champions Swinton Athletic continued their good form with a 2-1 home win over mid-table Frecheville. The win keeps Swinton in third place but they move to within six points of leaders North Gawber with seven games to play. There was a five goal thriller at the Bruce Dyer LLUK Sports Ground, where hosts Grimethorpe Sports edged-out Oughtibridge WMSC 3-2. Division One Both of the top two in Division One were in action on Saturday, and every point is vital with the teams level on points. There was little difference in performance of the two this weekend as well, with AFC Dronfield beating Boynton Sports 6-0 and Burngreave did almost the same as they beat Kiveton Park 6-1. It leaves both teams on 50 points, with AFC Dronfield just ahead on goal difference but having played three games more.

With Bluebell Wood requiring £11,000 of funding per day to operate, Vaulks went under lock and key in a prison for ‘Jail and Bail’, which saw over £10,000 raised. Doncaster Rovers’ Matty Blair has stepped up his involvement with ‘Fit Rovers’, completing more player visits than anyone else for the third year running. Blair has also continued to spearhead the Clubs’ mental health efforts, attending regular events held in partnership with the EFL’s charity partner Mind. Sky Bet League Two’s winner, Dan Butler, is the Club’s mental health ambassador, and has been for three years. Despite being one of the youngest members in the squad, his commitment and enthusiasm at the ‘We Wear The Same Shirt’ programme has had a lasting effect on the participants involved.

I’M PROUD TO BE THEIR MANAGER WARNE

Millers manager Paul Warne addressed the media after the weekend’s 2-1 defeat against Norwich City at the AESSEAL New York Stadium. “I’m quite proud,” said Warne. “If Norwich have their best day and we have our best day, we’re always going to struggle. They’re a formidable side but I thought our lads were great. It’s easy to say when you’ve won. “I’ve shook hands with all the Norwich players and 75 per cent of them told me we deserved more out of the game and I’ve told the lads that. With eight games to go, if we can keep that level of performance up we can collect enough points to have an amazing season. “I’m an emotional guy and when I was speaking to the lads I broke down a little bit. I asked them to perform at a level that makes us really proud and I am proud to be their manager. I thought they were excellent and going a goal down right on the stroke of halftime, it was a bit of a hammer-blow because I felt we’d played well. “The disappointment of the game for me was to concede on a set-piece. That, fundamentally, changed the game.” Semi Ajayi took his goals tally to six in five matches with Rotherham’s goal this afternoon,

MCCANN PLEASED WITH DEFENCE AFTER BARNSLEY DRAW Manager Grant McCann praised Rovers’ resolute defensive display in Friday’s goalless draw with local rivals Barnsley. Barnsley have scored 64 Sky Bet League One goals this season and are one of the top performing teams in the league, but the second-placed side could not find a way past Rovers unyielding defence. “We defended well, I can’t really remember Marko Marosi making too many saves apart from that good stop in the first half,” McCann said. “I’m pleased for the back four in keeping that clean sheet because it hasn’t been easy for them. We’ve missed some big players and we’ve had to change things because of injury but the boys have responded well to that bit of

adversity, they’re digging in. “In the second half, both teams defended very well but neither team was really at their best from an attacking front.” Despite improving performances which have resulted in draws against Blackpool and Barnsley, McCann knows victories will be crucial if his side are to secure a play-off spot. “In the first half, we were by far the better team, we played with energy and at a high tempo, and we should have been two up with the chances we had,” he added. “The second half was more even, they had a spell, then we had a spell. We probably moved the ball a little more slowly and it gave them the chance to build a bit of momentum but that’s one of the best teams in the league and we’ve matched - or have been better than them - for the majority of the game. “We need to get back to winning games, we don’t care if that’s against a Barnsley or a Luton as no one scares us in the league, and we’ve shown that by the performances we’ve put in against the other teams in the top six. We still have it in our hands to get in the top six with nine games to go, so it’s all to play for.”

LET’S ENJOY THE RIDE With the curtain slowly descending on the season, Steve Bruce says the Owls should ‘enjoy the ride’ following the 4-2 win over Blackburn on Saturday. The S6 success extended the unbeaten run to 11 games under the new boss, who shared the credit speaking to the assembled media after the game. Wednesday now sit just two places outside the top six with eight games left to play. He said: “I have to say it’s been a real team effort, on and off the pitch. The staff who have come in with me and the lads I inherited have been fantastic. “And the players deserve

all the credit because they’ve responded so well to what we’re trying to achieve. “We’ve taken our chances today, we’ve given ourselves a chance now so let’s all enjoy the ride.”

On the overall performance against Rovers, Bruce saw pros and cons but was pleased with the final outcome. He explained: “I wasn’t happy with the two goals we conceded but we’ve gone and scored four

times so there are no complaints there. “We dropped a little bit deep after scoring the second goal and Blackburn took advantage. They are a good side, they can hurt you, and we maybe

caused a few problems for ourselves. “That’s the first time we’ve conceded two goals at home since I came in a few weeks ago so I’ve said to the players, we have to be careful with that side of our game. “But going forward we’ve scored at the right times, we caused

Blackburn all kinds of problems at the back so that’s a real positive. “It was a difficult game overall and I am delighted with the result on an horrendous afternoon so well done and thank you to the supporters for coming down here today and getting behind your team.”

midfielder unleashed an unstoppable hit into the top corner during the Owls’ 2-2 draw with West Brom back in October. After the respective Sky Bet EFL Goal of the Month winners for 2018 were narrowed down to ten, the shortlist will now go to a public vote to decide the final five. The overall winner will then be voted for and

revealed on the night of the EFL Awards ceremony on Sunday 7 April at Grosvenor House Hotel in London. It’s the second successive year Reach has made the shortlist with his stunning strike away at Aston Villa after just 18 seconds making the cut for the calendar year 2017.

DUST DOWN AND DIGEST WHAT’S AHEAD

“With eight games to go, we’re going to need to win six of them probably, can we do it? We’ll try.” Unbeaten in 11 games is no mean feat in any division, let alone the Championship and Bruce has been keen to spread the praise around the whole team. “We’ve got to be happy going into the international break,” he continued. “Fair play to the players who have bought into what we are trying to do and also my staff, the ones I’ve inherited and the ones I’ve brought with me. “They’ve worked tirelessly to turn the situation around and we’ve now given ourselves a chance and if you ask most sensible people a couple of months ago, they would say we’re not capable. “We’ll take the win and have a couple of weeks off which is good for us with the amount of niggles and knocks that we’ve got – that’s my biggest concern at the moment - and see where we are.”

The international break will give the Owls an opportunity to dust themselves down, reflect on what has gone and look to what is to come, according to manager Steve Bruce. The turnaround in form has been nothing short of spectacular under Bruce, who has guided his side on a tremendous unbeaten run. It’s a sequence of results that has had Owls fans dreaming of a big finish to the campaign with eight games to go. Bruce said: “I’ve said to the players, we’ll dust ourselves down now, digest what’s ahead of us and see where we can go. “We have got some big games here to look forward to and let’s hope we can come out on top. “Let’s enjoy the rollercoaster and grasp it if we possibly can.
