A BONANZA OF FUN MARKS THE NEW LOOK WOOL MARKET OPENING IN DONCASTER The transformed Doncaster Wool Market will opens this week and will be celebrated in style with a fantastic weekend of fun and entertainment from Friday to Sunday, 29 to 31 March. Mayor Ros Jones said: “This is a momentous day for Doncaster. The revamped Wool Market is the first regeneration scheme to be completed since I launched our comprehensive Urban Centre Masterplan. This project and the many others underway, and in the pipeline, are designed to create a thriving town centre. “Our historic Wool Market has received a complete makeover. With its mix of new stalls for retail, eating and
drinking, it will be an attractive destination for traders and customers. It will enable Doncaster Markets to host more events and with extended opening hours into the evening all week long, it will encourage more people into the markets area. “I am sure local people and visitors are going to love the new vibe and I would urge people to come along for opening weekend celebrations to experience it first-hand. It’s going to be a great occasion.” The Wool Market refurbishment is part of the £6.8 million first phase of the Enterprise Marketplace scheme, which has benefited from £3.2 million of Local Growth Fund
(LGF) funding from the Sheffield City Region. The scheme was project managed by Doncaster Council, the main contractor was Willmott Dixon and the architect was Bond Bryan Architects. The bumper weekend kicks off on Friday (29 March) with a packed programme of entertainment. During the day, there will be live music courtesy of Natalie Black and Paula Swann-Sully, dance performances, street theatre and entertainers. An Enigma pop-up escape room, Flip Out trampolines and a traditional big ferris wheel will be available across the weekend. The fun continues into the evening with BBC’s
REGIONAL EDITION

Culture will come to the fore with the live music from 11am. Visitors can enjoy Paula Swann-Sully, Bombay Baja, Europe’s
leading Indian brass band, the Doncaster Ukulele Group and Salsa in the Square will really get people in the party spirit. The live music acts continue in the evening when a number of talented local singers, singer/songwriters and musicians take to the stage. Harriet Rose Grant, Emily Harris, Lewis Canner and Toby Burras will all wow the crowds. DISEASED STREET TREES TO BE REMOVED IN COMING WEEKS A small number of diseased street trees will need to be removed in coming weeks to restrict the spread of a potentially destructive disease called Phytophthora Plurivora. Twenty lime trees on Whitley Wood Road were recently tested by Amey after displaying distinctive signs of the disease, which, if left, could have a devastating impact on nearby tree populations.
The presence of Phytophthora has now been confirmed in six trees by the Forestry Commission’s Tree Health Advisory and Diagnostic Service. Amey will continue to work proactively with them to determine the extent of the disease in neighbouring trees and agree the most suitable preventative measures. Darren Butt Account Director for Amey, Streets Ahead says: “I know many people will be concerned and saddened to hear that
we need to remove a number of street trees. However, now that we have confirmation that Phytophthora is present, we must act to save not only other street trees in the vicinity, but also to restrict the potential spread to adjacent woodland. “Phytophthora is a known disease which can be very destructive and whilst we are thankful that the species identified in Sheffield is not the most virulent, our
focus has to be on minimising the risk of further infection.” The six trees affected on Whitley Wood Road will be removed before the end of March. Paul Brooke, Chair of the Sheffield Tree Action Group (STAG): “We have always said that diseased trees that pose a risk, as in this case, should be removed. We have campaigned against the felling of healthy trees.” He goes on to say, “When it’s clearly

uncertain which trees may succumb to a disease like this, it’s vital to conserve all our healthy trees to ensure the best possible street tree canopy for citizens’ health and wellbeing.” Further results from suspected affected street trees on Thornsett Road, Park Avenue and Endcliffe Grove Avenue are still being looked at by the Forestry Commission. It is possible that a number of these trees will also need to be removed. Work to replant the diseased trees will be agreed once a thorough soil assessment has been completed.

However, although most of the frustration around subscriptions is a result of the services on offer, the report reveals consumers are being fairly lackadaisical when it comes to keeping a close eye on their subscriptions. Nearly half (45 per cent) of consumers say unforeseen price hikes are what they dislike most about subscriptions. Half (50 per cent) of consumers are currently paying for at least one subscription they either do not use or get value for money from. The popularity of subscriptions is rooted in the ease they provide consumers with 63 per cent citing convenience as the main reason they have subscriptions. Given that, it’s not surprising that the top reason consumers continue to pay for subscriptions that provide little value for money is that they might use them at some point (36 per cent). While consumers like the convenience of having immediate access to subscriptions, they are becoming frustrated with the lack of alternative payment plans and rewards. Nearly half (48 per cent) of people say they dislike subscriptions because they do not offer loyalty points and more than a quarter (26 per cent) dislike lengthy subscription commitments. As a result, four in 10 (39 per cent) consumers are
taking matters into their own hands and are cancelling and re-joining services as and when they need them in a bid to save money and take advantage of new member offers. Although it’s lower prices that would please most consumers (63 per cent), many are eager to see more pay-asyou-go options. Nearly half (45 per cent) say variable price plans that depend on usership would improve their subscriptions and 15 per cent would like to see different payment options introduced. Frustrating cancellations When asked what they dislike most about subscriptions, four in 10 (41 per cent) said cancelling is their biggest bug-bear. Of the 43 per cent who cancelled a subscription in the last year, six in 10 (62 per cent) found the process difficult. Although nearly half (47 per cent) were able to cancel online, more than a third (35 per cent) had to make a call, write a letter or email, or visit a store. As a result, nearly a quarter (27 per cent) of people have continued to pay for a service because they find cancelling too hard. Adam Bullock, UK Director of TopCashback.co.uk says: “Lots of companies are moving towards subscription-based products as they offer sustained, predictable revenue. And consumers love subscriptions as they offer immediate, convenient access. But, our report shows consumers are continuing to pay for the periods of time they’re not using their subscriptions and are losing money as a result. As well as keeping an eye on subscriptions to see if they’re still worth the money, moving to pay-
as-you-go options is a much more costeffective approach. And until companies offer variable price plans, cancelling and re-joining can reap rewards as you can access new sign-up discounts and cashback offers.” 7 tips for savvy subscriptions • Firstly, it’s important to get a handle on the subscriptions you’re currently paying for. Go through your bank accounts and make a note of every subscription you have and how much it costs. £10 here and there on a couple of subscriptions may not seem like much, but they can add up so it’s worth working out the total cost of all your subscriptions to see if you can still afford it. • Once you have a list of your subscriptions, it’s time to be realistic about whether you’re getting value for money. When was the last time you used the service? Are you using it enough to warrant the cost? Can you still afford the monthly payments? Are there cheaper alternatives? If you feel like you’re not getting value for money, you’re better of ditching it. • Alternatively, do some research to see if there’s a way you can pay-as-you-go for the subscriptions you feel you aren’t getting value for money from. Perhaps you can sign up based on your usage or join a scheme that lets you pay as and when without pricey joining fees. • For the subscriptions you keep, make a note of when the contract is up so you stay on top of it. Each time a subscription is up for renewal you should decide whether you still need it and if you do, check to see if you can still afford it or whether you can get a better deal.

0114 243 3933 • It’s also important to set calendar reminders for free trials to ensure you don’t end up locked in a subscription you either don’t want or can’t afford. • Another way to reduce costs is by haggling for a cheaper price. If you feel you’re paying too much or perhaps the service you’ve received hasn’t been great, see if you can speak to the company to ask for a discount. • If you have the funds available, it’s often worth paying for subscriptions you know you need and use regularly, up-front for a year. Most places will give you a discount for signing up for longer periods of time as it ensures a steady revenue for the business.

TRAMLINES FESTIVAL DONATES OVER £30K TO CHARITY Sheffield’s citybased music festival, Tramlines, has donated over £30k to charities including Weston Park Cancer Charity, Cavendish Cancer Care and Crohn’s & Colitis UK. Each charity was chosen due to their personal connection to members of the Tramlines team; the late Festival Director Sarah Nulty and longtime supporter of the festival, Sam Cleasby, who is an influential voice for Crohn’s & Colitis sufferers. Various fundraising streams were set up at the Tramlines 10th Anniversary in 2018 including guest list donations, merchandise and bar spends. Friends and colleagues of Sarah Nulty will continue to raise money for the cancer charities as they embark on the Sheffield Half Marathon on 14th April – over £4,000 has been raised so far and the team are calling for further donations via the My Donate page. Sarah has also been honoured
by local publication ‘The Star’ who have created the ‘Sarah Nulty award for Creativity’ in their newly launched Women of Sheffield Awards. Sarah Nulty was director at Tramlines Festival from 2013 – 2018, and sadly passed away at the age of 36 just weeks before she saw her hard work become a reality in the festival’s 10th anniversary event. Sarah was instrumental in the launch of Tramlines in 2009, coordinating venues and handling bookings and later working in the commercial department. Tenacious, innovative and thoroughly unbreakable, Sarah led Tramlines through its toughest and most pivotal times. Sarah was a well-loved, galvanising force in Sheffield and as such, her death provoked a huge response with many people wanting to continue her legacy and to honour and support the organisations who helped her during the
final months of her life. During Tramlines 2018, money was raised in ‘Nulty’s Bar’, a backstage area voluntarily staffed by Sarah’s friends and colleagues. Funds were also raised through guestlist donations and by merchandise sold on site including the now iconic ‘BeMoreNulty’ t-shirts. The result of this fundraising has led to Weston Park Cancer Charity and Cavendish Cancer Care receiving an incredible £14k each. This money will be spent on research and resources for these charities that do so much good work in Sheffield. Danielle Gigg, Festival Producer at Tramlines said: “It’s been great to raise so much money for two charities that worked closely with Sarah and did so much for her. It’s amazing to see her legacy live on in the city in lots of different ways. The gap in my life since she passed will always be there, but watching
people continue to celebrate her is a real comfort”. Funds raised at Tramlines 2018 have also been shared with a third body, Crohn’s & Colitis UK, a charity dedicated to fighting inflammatory bowel disease. This charity was nominated by Timm Cleasby, Head of Operations at Tramlines since 2009, as his wife Sam Cleasby has become an influential voice for Crohn’s & Colitis sufferers through her massively popular ‘So Bad Ass’ website, promoting body positivity and better understanding of these conditions for people across the globe. Timm added: “Sarah and I had discussed which charities we would support in 2018, in late 2017. It was her suggestion that led to Crohn’s & Colitis UK being chosen as one of them. Having visited all three charities, it’s great to see first-hand just how the money we have
LIVE EVENTS AT THE PARAMOUNT
raised will benefit these amazing local charities and so many people of South Yorkshire. Crohn’s Disease and Ulcerative Colitis are often said to be invisible impairments as those living with them face stigma and embarrassment. It’s great to see the change in people now discussing this openly and honestly. Crohn’s & Colitis UK are at the forefront of this working to support and connect people living with the conditions, finding new treatments, and hopefully a cure”. Cavendish Cancer Care and Weston Park Cancer Charity are also due to receive another donation from friends and colleagues of Sarah Nulty who are running the Sheffield Half Marathon on 14th April. ‘The Most Unlikely Marathon Team Ever’ is formed of various Sheffield music industry workers and £4k has already been pledged to the team, but they are
hoping to raise at least £5k. To donate to their efforts, please use this page. Sarah’s friend and colleague, Tim Walker, commented: “Sarah worked with so many people in Sheffield’s music and events industry over the years, many of whom become good friends. Naturally, these people wanted a way to come together and do something positive in her name for the causes who helped her and her loved ones, so that they can continue to do such great work. Sarah was fantastic at motivating and bringing people together, often pushing people out of their comfort zones. So we’ve assembled a rag-tag bunch of DJs, promoters and festival organisers to form the most unlikely marathon team ever, most of whom have never run in their lives but are now training hard.” Since Sarah Nulty’s passing last year, she has been bestowed
with many posthumous awards and memorials. This includes an ‘Outstanding Contribution Award’ from both AIF (Association of Independent Festivals) and the UK Festival Awards, who also created the ‘Sarah Nulty Women in Festivals Award’. Sheffield City Council paid homage with a memorial plaque at Devonshire Green in Sheffield City Centre, and a Civic Award from the Lord Mayor of Sheffield, Magid Magid. On 7th March 2019,
The Star launched their ‘Women of Sheffield’ awards. They created the ‘Sarah Nulty award for Creativity’ in respect to her dedication to the music industry of Sheffield. The first winner of this award was Vicky Morris who was presented the award by Sarah’s mum, Julie Voisey. Tramlines Festival will continue its commitment to supporting local charities and causes during the 2019 event.

ANGLER’S CORNER
with Clint Walker
I fancied a change this week, so instead of heading to a club water, I opted for a day ticket water near my home, hoping for a bream or two… or three… I rolled to a stop at the venue to be greeted by three plastic bags filled with last night’s pizza delivery, beer cans, and kebab wrappers, and having walked around a couple of the ponds, I returned with another bin bag full of beer cans and bottles carelessly left by former occupants of the pegs. Frankly, I almost turned around right there and then, but resolved to put it all into my own bin bags and take it home on behalf of all decent anglers… I have no idea why so-called anglers are such a lazy, filthy idle bunch of imbeciles, and guess what? They are the first to moan when rubbish is left in their intended peg! I eventually chose a peg as far from the litter as I could, and tackled up a quivertip rod, pushing a 2oz tip into the top, and rooted through the mess I call a tackle box in search of a flat bed method feeder. Once discovered, it was slid up the line, the bead tied on, and a short hook link attached. I quite like the Guru method rigs and chose a banded one to start. I’ve had some products through from Spotted Fin, a plastic tub containing two kilos of ‘Method Ready’ pellets which promise no fuss, no preparation fishing, simply squeeze and fish. I combined the pellets with an 10mm wafter on the hook and fired it out into open water, just in front of an island. The ‘Method Ready’ pellets are just 2mm in diameter and are already perfect for use as soon as the snap lock lid is removed. Just fill the method feeder mould, press the feeder into them and cast out. It really is that simple and as they are Spotted Fin baits, they are guaranteed to work! I’d used them previously about a fortnight ago and was very pleased to find that they were still in perfect condition, without drying out, clumping, or shrinking; great stuff! They are currently available in three flavours, Catalyst, Classic Corn and Sweet Meat, and my preferred choice is the Classic Corn which I’ve found to be a superb ‘all-rounder’. A few catapults worth of mixed pellets had been
loosely fed over the intended spot, and after casting, I sat back to wait for the first indications. Just a few minutes later, the ‘tip heaved over as a carp of perhaps ten pounds (if I’m very lucky!) sought sanctuary beneath the island tangle, but to no avail, it was quickly subdued and returned; a good start! The next few casts saw little but the odd tremble of the ‘tip as I slowly built a bed of bait. Thirty minutes passed before my next fish, a bream of around three pounds, surrendered like a startled Frenchman and slipped easily over the net to find its way into the keepnet. With some regularity, I landed a few more similar fish, then all went quiet as the fish backed off the feeder, so it was time for a change of tactics. I swapped the flat feeder for a small cage feeder and packed it full of the Method Ready pellets but added a much longer hook link. Once more, an hour of frustrating rattles saw little else in the way of fish banked, so the method feeder was returned to the line; this time however, I picked a smaller 8mm bait and cast back out over the baited spot. I hadn’t even tightened the line properly before the ‘tip went around as another bream gave up. Whilst talking to a fellow angler who dropped by to swap ideas, I had a steady stream of quality slabs all weighing around 3-4lb as a shoal moved into the swim. It soon became obvious that it was the size of bait that had caused the fish to shy away, not the feeder and once I got it right, I went on to land about twenty five good sized bream to add to the carp I’d caught earlier. In total, I estimate I landed almost one hundred pounds of fish in cold conditions, which I consider a good result from that particular water. I’m ashamed to confess that within my van, I couldn’t find another bin bag in which to put all the other rubbish I’d found, so I left it by the tree where I’d found it. Not my rubbish, not my problem, right? Wrong, it’s the responsibility of all of us to clear up the countryside, and so to my mind, that makes me as bad as the original culprit. As I finish writing this week, freshly showered, and clad in shorts and tee-shirt, I feel sufficiently guilty that as soon as I send this, I’ll return the few miles to the water with enough bags to clear it up; if it was you who left it, then you are no angler, and you should never grace the banks again… thankfully, some of us do care…

The points were shared at Oughtibridge War Memorial Ground, where Oughtibridge WMSC were held to a 2-2 draw by Hepworth United.
Spring was in the air in the South Yorkshire region this weekend and no more so in the County Senior League, where the title races are really starting to heat up.
Division One It is not just the Premier Division with a fascinating title race; Division One is also boiling along nicely. Burngreave FC scored six for the third consecutive game, as they beat Wombwell Main Reserves 6-0 away to go above AFC Dronfield (who were without a game) into first place. Burngreave have a three point lead. Third place Ecclesfield Red Rose 1915 are eight points off the lead with three games in hand, after they beat Caribbean Sports 8-0 at home. At the M-Tec Stadium, Houghton Main were 2-1 winners over Kiveton Park. Houghton Main remain in fourth, just three points behind Ecclesfield, but have played two games more. Fifth placed Denaby Main were held to a 1-1 draw at home by mid-table Sheffield Medics.

Premier Division It was a significant week in the Premier Division, as the top two North Gawber Colliery and Dodworth Miners Welfare both played twice in the space of four days. On Wednesday night North Gawber beat Handsworth Parramore Reserves 2-1 at Oliver’s Mount. On the same night second placed Dodworth were 4-1 winners over Penistone Church Reserves at the Memorial Ground. ON Saturday Dodworth also beat Handsworth, but they managed a 2-0 victory, with North Gawber winning 3-0 at Stocksbridge Park Steels Reserves. North Gawber’s lead remains at two points. Defending champions Swinton Athletic made it three consecutive victories with a thrilling 4-3 away win against Jubilee Sports. Swinton remain in third place, nine points off the pace. Penistone Church Reserves followed their midweek defeat to Dodworth with a comprehensive 12-0 home win over struggling South Kirkby Colliery. Frecheville ended a run of four straight losses with a 6-2 win over Grimethorpe Sports at Davy Sports Ground. Wombwell Main were impressive 4-0 winners at Old Road against Denaby United. Strangely, Wombwell who are ninth in the table (mid-table) have a 22 goal positive goal difference.
Division Two Division Two leaders Wombwell Town were 3-1 winners at home against Dodworth Miners Welfare Reserves thanks to goals from Joe Oliver (2) and substitute Callum Wood. Wombwell’s lead is lengthened to four points, after second placed Stocksbridge Park Steels Development were held to a 3-3 draw against third placed Sheffield Union. United Worksop were 1-0 winners over AFC Dronfield Reserves at Manton Athletic Club, thanks to an early goal from Patryk Zukowski. A brace from Kelvin Bramhall helped inspire New Bohemians to a 3-0 win over Swinton Athletic Reserves at Forge Valley School.

POTTER PLEASED TO BE BACK INVOLVED
Rotherham United long-term absentee Darren Potter insists that he enjoyed the opportunity to be back amongst his teammates for a competitive fixture for the first time, as he featured for 45 minutes in the 1-1 draw at Port Vale in The Central League. The midfielder has been luckless on the injury front after a promising start in Rotherham United colours last season and has been forced to watch from the sidelines for months. There is now light at the end of the tunnel for the former Liverpool man, who has dedicated himself entirely to ensuring he recovered from two serious injuries, paving the way for his first competitive action this season. “It was great and I enjoyed being back out there,” Potter told www.themillers.co.uk. “I think it’s a bit different to play in a match environment, coming to a proper stadium and taking part. “I’ve been training now for the best part of three weeks, so from that point of view things have been going okay. “The injury is fine, there were no problems. I’ve had no issues with it since I’ve been back really, it’s gone well and it’s been a case of getting minutes under my belt and getting my
MCCANN FOCUSED ON ROVERS’ RESPONSE Manager Grant McCann says he will be looking for a quick response from his side following a 4-0 defeat away at Sky Bet League One leaders Luton Town. A stunning second-half showing from the Championship-bound Hatters blew Rovers away on Saturday at Kenilworth Road, and McCann says his team need to get the energy back in their game ahead of another big week. “We were miles off the pace all game really, from minute one we were on the back foot, we were second best all over the field, Luton are a top, top side and they’ll reach the Championship quite comfortably, but we were absolutely nowhere near it,” he said. “They’re a good team but we made it easy for them, they play very well here, but it’s not acceptable, I’ve said that to the players after the game, I want to get into that top six at the end of the season, that’s my firm focus and I’m disappointed. “I wasn’t happy with the way we lacked a hunger and a desire to go out and get a result here, we had to change shape in the second

fitness back up to the right levels.” Potter’s determination to return hasn’t stopped at rejoining his teammates in first team training though, and while the 34-year-old is hopeful of a return to Sky Bet Championship action, admits it won’t be an easy task. “It’s something I want to do,” he explained. “Whether I do or not will be another matter. It’ll be something to speak with the manager and the staff about. “The team are obviously doing quite well at the moment, although we’re in the relegation fight, they’re putting in some good performances and competition for places is high.” The midfielder concluded by explaining that attentions will now refocus on training sessions with the Millers’ senior squad as he continues to work towards regaining full match fitness ahead of a crucial run-in for Paul Warne’s side after the international break. “We’ll get a few days off now with it being the international break and I’ll speak with the coaches on Monday and see what the plan is going forward,” Potter continued. “I think it was probably more important that I had the minutes from training under my belt. As much as it is important to try and get games, it was key that I got out on the grass with the lads and ensured that everything was okay from that point of view, which it has done.”
half, they ran the midfield and we became disjointed, but we’re looking to get that energy back and bounce back quickly.” Rovers have the chance to regain their top six spot when they host Bristol Rovers on Tuesday evening, before next weekend’s visit of Walsall, and McCann says his side will learn from the defeat and move on quickly. “We’re always looking to learn lessons, and we can learn a lot from this game and move on to Bristol Rovers on Tuesday now, we are where we are in the league for a reason, we know how good we can be, and we now have two big opportunities at home,” he added. “We’re normally very good at shaking things like this off, and we have to because the games now at this stage of the season are coming very quickly, we have to make sure that we get two wins from the next two, that’s what I expect. “Every game is a massive one now, we have to find a bit of consistency in the way we play, we’ll look back at the bad points and the good points and build on it, just as we always do, and make sure we get back into that top six.”
ROBERTSON RETURN FOR THE WEEKEND POSSIBLE, SAYS WARNE Rotherham United boss Paul Warne says Clark Robertson could return to the squad for Saturday’s Championship showdown against Derby County. The Scottish central defender picked up a hamstring injury late on in the recent defeat at Sheffield United which has sidelined him for the games against QPR and Norwich City. The international break has boosted the Aberdeen-born defender’s chances of a speedy return, and Warne says he will assess his chances this week, claiming a comeback this weekend at Derby remains a possibility. “Clark Robertson is coming along nicely, and he may be ready for the weekend,” Warne informed www.themillers.co.uk “We are virtually back to full strength which is great. “Robbo has worked hard and is closing in on a return, so if he’s back he can compete with Michael Ihiekwe and Richard Wood who have both done really well. We are going into the last part of the season in good fettle.” Warne revealed earlier that Kyle Vassell is back amongst the main group this morning, as he continues his rehabilitation from a hamstring problem. In other injury news, midfielder Darren Potter made his comeback from a long-term Achilles injury during a reserve outing at Port Vale last weekend. The experienced former Sheffield Wednesday and Wolves operator is in line to play again for the second string again tomorrow, after completing 45 minutes at Vale Park. The Millers took the opportunity to look at
PRAISE FOR YOUNG DEBUTANT HASANI Manager Grant McCann praised 16-yearold Lirak Hasani after the youth team player made his senior debut on Saturday against Luton Town. Midfielder Hasani, who has come through the youth ranks with Rovers, came on for the final 19 minutes of the defeat against the Hatters. Hasani, one of the youngest debutants in the club’s history - although Alick Jeffrey remains the youngest at 15 years and 229 days - looked comfortable in possession of the ball. “I thought he was excellent when he came on, for a 16-year-old boy to come on in that environment isn’t easy, but he didn’t look out of place at all, he kept it simple and moved the ball quickly,” McCann said. “He’s a big boy for his age, he’s developed quickly, and I really was delighted with him, he was travelled with the team to Blackpool the other week and has trained with the first team a lot recently, so I didn’t have any problems with throwing him in. “I like bravery and

two trialists last week, a goalkeeper and a winger, and Warne confirmed there is likely to be another chance to impress for one of those individuals against the Mariners tomorrow afternoon. Warne added: “They’ll be a few of the professionals who have been on the periphery involved with the reserves at Grimsby tomorrow. “I have a trialist who will be involved as well, and then Darren Potter will get some more game time. “He (Potter) played 45 at Port Vale and did well. I gave Ryan Williams a game last week, whether I choose to play him again, I’m not sure yet. “Jerry Yates needs a few minutes, so does Joshua Kayode so there will be four or five professionals involved. All the first team staff will go over and watch the game, and it is a good time to keep everyone ticking over.”

FLETCHER’S FRUSTRATION Steven Fletcher has spoken of his frustration having missed Scotland’s double-header Euro 2020 qualifiers against Kazakhstan and San Marino. The Owls’ striker would almost certainly have featured for the Scots but Fletcher’s concern
over playing on artificial pitches whilst managing his fitness dictated his absence. Then, to exacerbate matters, Fletcher sustained a groin injury as Wednesday beat Blackburn last time out at Hillsborough ahead of the international break. He said: “I am

passionate about playing for my country and I made the decision with a very heavy heart. With the knee injury I had, it held me back for a long time, and I couldn’t take a chance on aggravating it again. It would just put me back to square one again. “On doctor’s advice,
and kind of on personal advice, I thought it’d be best to leave it.
“I played for Wednesday against Blackburn and the knee was fine on the grass but I pulled my groin. “Since then I’ve been working overtime with the physios. I was initially really disappointed but now I’m more upbeat because I’ve looked after my body over the past few months and that can only help with my recovery.” Owls boss Steve Bruce added: “I feel for Steven because he has so much passion for Scotland and he was as desperate to play as always. “But he was managing his own situation, he has
to be careful with his knee, and both of these games were on artificial surfaces, which would not be the best for him. “Steven played for us against Blackburn and picked up a groin injury and again, we have to be sensible, we took him off when the game was very finely poised at 1-0. “He’s been in with the physios all week having treatment and we want him back out there as
soon as possible. “I don’t like singling players out for praise because we win and lose as a team but I have to say Steven has been outstanding since I came into the club. “He is the consummate professional, he has led the line fantastically well and given me absolutely everything and that has been reflected in his form. “You know, we want him back out there as soon as we can and his desire is so strong but his fitness situation has to come first.”
IMPRESSIVE PALMER MAKES INTERNATIONAL BOW FAN COLUMN BY CHRIS PLATTS
It could be said that at the beginning of the season Liam Palmer wasn’t exactly at the top of Wednesday Fans lists of favourite players. He’s been playing in the first team since 2010 having come through the youth system, so you could say he’s part of the furniture. Some with short memories will have forgotten that he was our player of the year of 2013/14 season. For a minority he has been the scapegoat for Wednesday’s failings in the last couple of seasons, as hope of reaching the Premier League had fallen away to mid table obscurity over the past couple of years. In some part it was true with under performances and costly mistakes, however this could have been said about most of the players over the same period. It seemed that because he was the homegrown boy that he should be doing better. That he should be putting more effort in, putting up more of a fight, being the Mr Dependable. This is hard to do when every single touch is over scrutinised and even the smallest of mistakes being castigated by the over expecting crowd. Thankfully over the
past 3 or 4 months he’s proven his doubters wrong. His performances since the Christmas period have been outstanding. He’s been solid in the tackle, always looking to attack, and looking confident every time he’s on the ball. Even when Bruce took over and signed Iorfa as a possible replacement, he has been arguably the best player on the pitch in every game. Silencing the ‘boo’ boys of the last few years. Even when he’s been switched to an unfamiliar left back role, he has shown that he can be relied upon to do a great job. It just shows what can happen to a player’s performances when they’re injected with a bit of self-confidence. With the form he’s shown recently it was no surprise he was called up to the latest Scotland squad, and fully deserved to make his debut against Kazakhstan. Although the result wasn’t the best for him, I’m sure this will give him even more confidence to carry on his great form for Wednesday. In his current form, it would be criminal not to give him a new contract. That would take him into his 10th season and beyond with his boyhood club. Not many get to do that, and I believe he fully deserves to.

GETTING READY FOR LAST PUSH Richard Stearman believes it was a great decision by the club’s management to get the players away for warm weather training. United’s squad have been in Spain this week ahead of the international break.
The experienced defender commented: “It is important to reset the mind and the body and get the lads ready for the remainder of the season. It has been a thoroughly enjoyable week, it’s been far from a jolly up,
we’ve socialised together but the boys have put in the miles as well.” On the form which has seen the Blades rise to second in the SkyBet Championship, Stearman added: “The boys are great at the moment and
I’m happy to chip in as and when needed. The full squad will be needed to achieve in this league and I’d like to think my role is not just on the pitch, it’s in the dressing room and from the bench too.”
YOUNGSTERS ENJOY TRAINING CAMP Striker Oliver Greaves and goalkeeper Marcus Dewhurst, who celebrated his birthday last Wednesday, were part of the Blades contingent on the warm weather training camp in Spain. United have had a couple of academy prospects on the warm weather training camp in Spain - including
one who enjoyed his 18th birthday on the trip. Striker Oliver Greaves and goalkeeper Marcus Dewhurst, who celebrated his birthday on Wednesday, are part of the Blades contingent. Marcus said: “I’ve had fun so far, it’s been enjoyable being around the lads, it’s a privilege to be called up, not everyone gets
the chance. “It is a lot different to academy football, the tempo is a lot higher and you cannot afford to lose your head.” Oliver added: “I think it is a lot different, a lot quicker, hopefully I’m doing well. “The senior lads have been good, we are divided at Shirecliffe but it is good here. I’m a bit more nervous being with the senior
lads but when you get over the line onto the training field, the difference is that it is just a bit quicker.” Marcus has been capped at England junior level and has spent time on loan with Gainsborough Trinity and Guiseley, whilst Oliver is a versatile forward, who has captained the U23s on several occasions this term.
BLADES RETURN TO SHEFFIELD

He commented: “It has been a brilliant week, it is something different and the Chris Wilder has players have worked been impressed really hard. The with the facilities, organisation has been the weather and the fabulous, we are 15-20 effort his team have put in during the time minutes away from Valencia, the hotel away. have been great to us United’s players left and a measure of how the warm weather good it is, is that the training base near Spanish national team Valencia on Friday to are staying here over return to the UK. the weekend. The Blades stayed at the Parador de El Saler “Every international break we don’t let the and the next visitors lads just go away, we to the complex are work hard through it, the Spanish national but this one we have team ahead of their encounter with Norway worked harder. It is in Valencia at the important we keep the weekend. hammer down because Chris Wilder has been we have our eyes on impressed with the the next game.”
STATEMENT SOPHIE JONES Sheffield United Football Club has formally been made aware of the outcome of a Football Association disciplinary hearing involving one of the Club’s women’s team. A personal hearing was requested by Sophie Jones, who was charged with a breach of Rule E3[1] and Rule E3[2], following an alleged incident in the FA Women’s Championship fixture against Tottenham Hotspur Ladies on Sunday 6th January 2019. The hearing took place on Tuesday 19th March 2019. Jones has been found guilty of the charge and as a result has received
the sanctions of a five match suspension, a fine of £200 and asked to attend an FA Inclusion and Diversity Workshop. Jones maintains her innocence and is disappointed with the FA’s decision. The Club works closely with the EFL, the FA and Kick it Out and would like to reiterate that it does not condone racism or any form of discrimination. Following dialogue between the Club and Jones, and taking into account the length of the suspension, it has been decided that her contract, which was due for review in the summer, will be terminated by mutual agreement. Sheffield United will not comment further on this matter.
