ROTHERHAM FOOD BANK APPEAL AS NUMBERS DOUBLE Council Leader Cllr Chris Read dropped into the foodbank at the Hub Church in Canklow last week to see the impact of the Council’s funding. Use of foodbanks across the borough doubled last year, with more than three and a half thousand food parcels being distributed in the borough during the ten months to January this year. Cllr Read said: “The work that volunteers like Mick and the team at The Hub do makes an incredible difference in people’s lives. They tell me that more and more people are
seeking their support, especially as the impact of changes to benefits is increasingly felt in the borough. Delays and sanctions linked to Universal Credit are leaving residents struggling even for the essentials. “That’s why the support that the Council gives to provide food to The Hub and other projects across Rotherham is so important, but it’s a reminder to all of us who are able to make a contribution that the volunteers need our help too.” The Community Food partnership, which is part-funded by the
Council, has distributed nearly 38 tonnes of food to people in need since May 2018. The Hub alone has distributed nearly four tonnes. However, despite this there is still a need for more donations, and some specific items would be welcomed. In particular the Hub is asking people to donate tinned meat, as currently they have many tins of vegetables but no meat to help make up meals. They are also asking for reusable bags for people to be able to take their food home. Facilities’ Co-ordinator Catherine Moore
REGIONAL EDITION
added: “Our volunteers are vital to the service we provide to people and I would like to thank them for their commitment. We are seeing more people visiting our foodbank and so any donations people can give us are gratefully received.” The current Food in Crisis support was started by the Council as part of Local Welfare Provision in 2013. The Council contracted with FareShare Yorkshire for the provision of food to local organisations that signed up to be “Community Food Members”. The food bank support
that the Hub receives from FareShare is supplemented by donations from the congregation which help to buy additional food. Volunteers also collect food which is almost out of date from Tesco to supplement the available food for clients. Donations can be taken to The Hub church at 103 Canklow Road during opening hours on Wednesdays and Fridays, 11.30 am until 1.30 pm, or during the informal and lively church service on Sundays at 11 am. The Hub also offers a free debt advice service in association with Christians Against Poverty. Drop in during opening hours for more information.

THE FREEMAN WITH THE PRAM
The man with the pram, John Burkhill, is being awarded Sheffield’s highest honour, the Freedom Of The City. John, who has raised nearly a half a million pounds for Macmillan over the past 30 years and has vowed to raise more than a million, will join only a handful of people to have been given the honour, including Dame Jessica EnnisHill and Nelson Mandela.
John is famous for tirelessly walking the streets of Sheffield for a great cause, and is a regular feature at the city’s half marathons, 10ks and other events. For more than 30 years John, who has recently celebrated his 80th birthday, has put his heart and soul into raising money for Macmillan. He has taken part in over 1,000 organised races with his distinctive green wig and pram, braving the hills of Sheffield and
beyond in all kinds of weather. The Freedom of the City is an honour bestowed the council upon a valued member of the community, or upon a visiting celebrity or dignitary. Although the title of “freeman” confers no special privileges, it will allow John the freedom to parade through the city and is a very public recognition of John’s years of charity fundraising.

ECCLESBOURNE VALLEY RAILWAY WELCOMES TWO POPULAR LOCOMOTIVES THIS SUMMER Two popular locomotives will be steaming along the beautiful Derbyshire countryside of the Ecclesbourne Valley Railway this summer. By courtesy of the owner Andy Booth, the Lancashire and Yorkshire ‘A’ Class 52322, of 1890s vintage, will be arriving at Easter and providing relaxing trips along the valley until mid-summer. This type of locomotive featured in the classic film ‘The Railway Children’ and is a popular engine with young and the not so young alike.
Also arriving at the railway in mid-June is BR Standard 2 locomotive 78018. Normally based at the Great Central Railway, the locomotive extends a stay until early September operating on most weekends throughout the summer. For one weekend only, the 15th and 16th June, both locomotives will be on the line operating the first steam event since the Duffield line opened. The event called“Steam in the Valley” is a must-attend event for any steam locomotive enthusiast. The two steam
locomotives will be operating alongside the line’s two resident Andrew Barclay tank engines to provide services on both the Duffield line and the steeply graded Ravenstor incline. Also providing steam traction for the weekend will be the railway’s miniature railway based at Wirksworth Station. The weekend will also see two steam-hauled passenger services passing at Shottle station for the first time in the 151-year history of the line. Michael Evans, Managing Director said “At nine miles in length, the Ecclesbourne Valley Railway provides a wonderful opportunity to enjoy a journey back in time along one of Derbyshire’s unspoilt valleys. There is no better way to enjoy the beautiful Derbyshire’ countryside on a summer’s day than travelling on a heritage train being hauled by a living, breathing steam locomotive." Visitors are advised to check the railway’s website for further details and can pick up discounted advance Day Rover tickets plus tickets for various other events throughout the year on the new Online Shop at www.ev-r.com .

ROGUE TRADER WARNING FOR RESIDENTS Following prosecution of another rogue builder by Sheffield Trading Standards, the Council is warning people to be vigilant when employing workmen, and warns dodgy traders that they will investigate and take action. The warning comes after a trader who scammed a Sheffield couple out of £4,500 was prosecuted at Sheffield Crown Court. A 34 year old from Chesterfield preyed on people who had already been on the receiving end of dodgy building work by claiming he could repair the problems – despite not having the skills to do the work properly. He pleaded guilty to two offences under the Consumer Protection from Unfair Trading Regulations 2008 Act in Sheffield Magistrates Court on 29 January 2019. He was sentenced on Thursday 14 March 2019 at Sheffield Crown Court to 250 hours unpaid work, 20 days rehabilitation and ordered to pay the victims £2,000 compensation. Sheffield Crown Court heard that, during 2017, his victims were already experiencing problems and delays with the building of an extension to their home. In August 2017 the man was employed by the-then current builder to help move the work on. Knowing that the couple were experiencing difficulties with their builder, he convinced them he would complete the
build for £9,000 if he received £4,500 in advance. Alarmed by the actions of the first builder and desperate to get the work completed, they put their trust in him and paid him the £4,500, the court heard. The man knew he had neither the business nor building skills to manage the project. After two days on site and very little work, he began making a series of excuses and never attended again. When questioned by trading standards officers he admitted to having no building qualifications or formal training. Sentencing him Judge Dixon said he had a chequered history and had got himself in a financial mess. He had offered a number of false promises to vulnerable people, building up their trust and then did nothing at all. Ian Ashmore, Head of Environmental Protection Service at Sheffield City Council, said: “This is another example of blatant criminal behaviour, commonplace within the rogue trading complaints investigated every week. We take these complaints seriously and will not tolerate targeted financial abuse such as this. I hope this outcome provides a warning to others who show no regard for their victims when carrying out fraudulent activity.” The Trading Standards officers work hard to prevent rogue traders, doorstep
criminals and scams and through a network of partner agencies, the council’s Not Born Yesterday campaign continues to raise awareness of these types of crimes, with increasing numbers of offenders brought to justice. Mr Ashmore added: “It’s often vulnerable people who are targeted and it’s very upsetting for those who are swindled. We ask anyone who suspects or witnesses fraudulent activity to report it so that we can protect more people in Sheffield from these types of abuse.” This latest instance is the twelfth serious case that Sheffield Council’s Trading Standards Service, aided by the support of the Sheffield Safeguarding Board have successfully prosecuted in the last two years, nine further cases are pending court action and a further nine are currently being investigated. Keeping in touch with neighbours, especially when they may be vulnerable does make it harder for doorstep criminals and rogue traders to start and continue scams. People with concerns or suspicions about a scam, rogue trader or fraudulent business activity can report those concerns to Sheffield Trading Standards at trading. standards@sheffield.gov.uk or 0114 2736290 (Sheffield Trading Standards) 03454 040506 (Citizens Advice Helpline).

SIR CLIFF AND LESLEY GARRETT TO SING FOR S. YORKS CHARITY 20TH BIRTHDAY Sir Cliff Richard and opera legend Lesley Garrett are to sing together for the first time as they celebrate the 20th anniversary of one of Britain’s top dementia charities. The pop legend and the Doncaster Diva are both patrons of Lost Chord, the South Yorkshire organisation that provides vital interactive musical experiences for people living with dementia in care homes and day centres across the region and nationally. And they will take to the stage together for a unique concert as the charity celebrates its 20th birthday this July. The concert, which forms the highlight of a special celebration dinner, will be held at the historic Great Hall of Lincoln’s Inn in London on July 15, when 250 guests will enjoy a drinks
reception, three course dinner, music from the professional musicians of Lost Chord and a charity auction. But the climax of the black tie event will see Sir Cliff and Lesley on stage performing some of their greatest hits before they sing together in a birthday celebration for Lost Chord’s 20 years of work with dementia. “This is going to be the most special evening’s in Lost Chord’s history,” said the charity’s Chief Executive, Helena Muller. “We are so grateful to the Honourable Society of Lincoln’s Inn for giving us permission to host this night of fine dining and great music in this spectacular and historic setting. “And most of all we cannot express enough our gratitude that Lesley and Sir Cliff
have both agreed to join us on this evening and entertain our guests with a once-ina-lifetime performance that will bring together the worlds of contemporary and classical music in a way you will never have experienced before. “Add to that the magic of our great professional musicians playing throughout the evening and I can safely say this is going to be a birthday celebration to
remember! “Ticket cost £175 per person and are strictly limited to just 250 places so we do advise early booking as demand is going to be high.” To find out more out the 20th birthday celebration and to reserve places or find out more about Lost Chord and its work with dementia simply visit www.lost-chord. org.uk

ANGLER’S CORNER
with Clint Walker
I love the feeling of anticipation when I go to fish a new water for the very first time, especially one where the residents are of an unknown quantity, so I was really looking forward to visiting the newest water on the Stoke-on-Trent Angling Society card, Challinor’s Pool. I didn’t really know what to expect, as I’d never even seen the venue before, and information online was hard to find, and wasn’t very…informative, so I packed everything, just in case, and set off for the fifteen minute drive to the waterside. A gloriously sunny day awaited, perhaps not ideal conditions after a frosty night, but I noted two anglers already fishing, and set off for a wander to see what I could find out. The lake is a small water of perhaps three acres with a central island, with depths to around six feet, and the club hope to turn into a general coarse lake for all members to enjoy. Much work has already been completed by ardent work parties, clearing overgrown undergrowth, installing new drainage and more, so already the pool was looking much better than when the club had initially taken over control, and in the morning sunshine, it was a very pleasant place to be. I
chatted to a perch angler, who informed me that decent fish were within, and then made my way to the carper who also divulged the fact that fish to over 21lb had already been caught… promising stuff, so I grabbed the barrow, and wheeled it to a vacant peg. I opted to fish a pair of method feeders tight to the island which I found had a significant undercut. It meant that accuracy was paramount as I’d already spotted fish cruising right against the far bank, slipping under the trees and bushes which clad the island. Both feeders were loaded with the new Spotted Fin Method Ready pellets, baited with 8mm wafters and dropped within inches of the sedges which lined the far bank. A few pouches of mini pellets went over the top to encourage the fish to start grubbing about and I sat back with a brew to enjoy the morning sunshine; perfect! As the sun shone down, I admired a buzzard swirling high above, listened to pheasants in the field behind, and watched a duck lead her family of tiny ducklings around the pond. My pleasure turned to sadness though as I witnessed a drake catch and drown a couple of the youngsters, an act I’m told is to encourage the hen to become receptive again. Sometimes nature can be brutal, but it’s all part of my education when I’m fishing, so it although it was harsh to watch, it was something

new to learn… Whilst enjoying the weather and peaceful tranquillity however, my bobbins remained stubbornly motionless, but it wasn’t really an issue, a chat with my neighbours meant new friends made, and I was still seeing fish moving through the swim. They were nice fish too, some obviously well into double figures, perhaps bigger, and others superbly marked with orangey flanks and huge scales; definitely worthy adversaries… I’m informed that the water holds perch in excess of 3lb and bream approaching 9lb, with ‘nice’ tench also reported, so it’s certainly a water I’ll take an interest in as the weather warms up. As I sat drinking more tea, one of my indicators was snatched up and instantly dropped, an event which happened three times as fish moved across my lines, but still they failed to register a proper bite until several hours into my session. I was watching a stunning mirror cruise the far bank and then sink from sight right over my bait when the receiver buzzed in my pocket and the rod tip bent over! I grabbed the rod to prevent the carp going under the island, and instantly realised this wasn’t the fish I’d just been watching. A small stocky carp of about 3lb was the culprit, but despite its small size, it was another beautifully marked sample from this

intriguing little lake. I noted only one other fish caught during the day, a carp of similar size to mine and as the sun started to sink, I began to pack up as other anglers arrived for the night. An exchange of information revealed that the water is better during the hours of darkness, when the bigger fish start to feed, so maybe it’s a water I’ll have to spend a night on… Either way, it’s a smashing addition to the club card, it hasn’t cost me a penny extra to fish with the club card already offering superb value for money, so if you want to find out more, then visit www. stokeontrentanglingsociety.com

MICHAEL HAILS MILLERS CHARACTER CENTRE-HALF Michael Ihiekwe is under no illusions that his Millers side have a considerable fight on their hands to retain their Championship status, at the first time of asking – but he has no doubt that Paul Warne’s side have the necessary mental and physical fortitude to defy the odds. The AESSEAL New York Stadium outfit have been perched in and around the Championship drop-zone but many of those with a Rotherham United persuasion will be heartened by the fact that the likes of Millwall and Wigan Athletic have been dragged into the dogfight in recent weeks – with the likely scenario that three teams out of six will face the dreaded drop. Ihiekwe is backing his side to handle the pressure-cooker atmospheres at the business end of the season, whereby every result is sure to be magnified, in terms of its importance by remarking that the Millers often rise to the challenge when their backs are to the wall. “We have some massive games ahead but we have the right character in the squad,” Ihiekwe stressed. “Everyone will be putting 110 percent into every game and that’s all you can ask from them. Every point counts in this league especially at the bottom. We just need to concentrate on ourselves and try and put in good performances and pick points up. “We are fighting for safety and the remainder of the season are the type of games you want to play in where there is a bit of pressure on you. You want to go out and perform well and hopefully we can keep on doing that.”
29
Ihiekwe, who was plying his trade in the non-league arena just two years ago with former club Tranmere Rovers, played a leading role in Rotherham’s League One promotion last term. However, the Liverpool-born defender found himself down the Millers pecking order in the early stages of the season and with first team chances expected to be limited, Ihiekwe opted to join Accrington Stanley for the first half of the campaign. At that stage, many may have written off Ihiekwe’s chances of making a Championship impact, but the 26-year-old has taken his belated opportunity with both hands, by playing an impressive part in the Millers’ three and four-man defences in recent weeks. “When I was at Accrington, I was always in contact with the gaffer. He’s good like that. He texted me every week and he was watching my games and clips every week, so I knew the door was always open here,” Ihiekwe revealed. “I just needed to come back, train hard, show hunger and perform well when I got the chance to force my way into the team. “I’m enjoying it. I’m just trying to stay on the top of my game and try and stay solid. I’ve got a good centre-back next to me and there is good competition on the bench as well. That is what keeps pushing us. “The Championship is definitely a step up. There is pace all over the pitch against us and you have to stay concentrated for the 90 plus minutes. I’m enjoying every minute of it.”

MCCANN PRAISES PROFESSIONAL PERFORMANCE
Walsall carried a threat throughout the game, they had an effort hit the bar and several cleared off the line and McCann was keen to praise his side’s defensive efforts as well as his goalkeeper. “Marko Marosi is on top form at the moment and that’s what we need in this part of the season,” he said. “Walsall have scored from set plays in eight Rovers got off to a blistering start in out of their last ten games, so we knew they their 3-1 victory over Walsall. I was pleased with how resolute tone while Danny Andrew’s goal direct we were against a team who went pretty from a free-kick capped off a successful direct in the second half. afternoon at the Keepmoat Stadium. “We’ve got sheer belief amongst the staff Rovers have moved five points clear of and players that we can achieve what we seventh place after picking up six points in want to achieve. We’ve got ourselves into four days and McCann praised his side’s a good position but we’re not getting ahead professionalism in getting the job done of ourselves. We’ve got a big job ahead at against a side who are fighting for their lives. Bradford who are fighting for their lives and “I thought it was a professional then an even bigger job in these final few performance,” he said. games.” “I made a real point to the players that it was important not to look at Walsall’s results because their performances have been excellent in the last four or five games. They were brilliant against Sunderland and they probably should have beaten Barnsley so it was pleasing that we scored a couple of goals early. “For ten or fifteen minutes in the first half, we were a bit sloppy and lacked a bit of composure. We were a bit slow in reacting to losing the ball, but the boys put a massive shift in on Tuesday so that’s probably to be expected. The first half was a bit of a mix, some really good bits and some sloppy bits but in the second half, we were really professional.”

RESILIENCE GOT US THE RESULT Steve Bruce praised the resilience of his side following the goalless draw at Stoke that extended the Owls’ unbeaten run to 12 games. A game of few chances
saw Wednesday and the Potters share the majority of possession and ultimately the points. Bruce said: “A point is not what we want but I’ll take it. “We are playing players
who are not 100% at the moment, so it’s a bit of a makeshift team. “And we weren’t at our best today if I’m being honest, but hey, you have to praise the effort and resilience that we’ve
shown today. “Make no mistake, Stoke are a very good side with some very good players, so to come here which can be a very difficult place to come to and get a point is not too bad.” The Owls now face back to back home games against Aston Villa and Nottingham Forest, contests that Bruce believes could prove pivotal on the home straight. He added: “We go home now with two very, very big games. “So, let’s see what we can do, we’ve still got a bit of a chance, we’ve put ourselves in there
and fair play to the players. “When I came into the club I think it was a case of Steve, make sure you keep us in this division.

HOOPER’S RETURN FAN COLUMN BY CHRIS PLATTS
You have to go back to Boxing Day 2017 to the last time Gary Hooper played for the Owls. That’s 460 days that we’ve had to wait for his return. For a first team player to be out that long it is definitely going to affect the team. Especially when he is considered to be the main goal threat for the team. This is why it was so important to see Hooper’s name back on the team sheet. Even more so to see him in the first eleven. It’s been a long and arduous road to recovery, including a few setbacks on the way, but he’s finally made it. You could see all over social media how much this meant to the fans. Thousands of fans passing on their support to him
as the news broke that he was back in the team. It was as if the positivity around the club at the moment went to another level. Now we can gloss over his performance as it was average to say the least. However, he did manage 68 minutes. A minor miracle considering he has been to hell and back. You could see he was wanting the ball, looking to bring others into play. He looked a little behind play at times, and his passing was a little off, but he was back! And that’s the most important thing to take away from his performance on Saturday. Hopefully in these last few games he can build on this and contribute a few goals, as the Owls look to push onto the playoff positions.

CITY REVERSAL FRUSTRATES WILDER The Blades boss was disappointed with defeat, but had to go out to win it at 2-2. Chris Wilder acknowledged his side weren’t at their best, as Bristol City left Bramall Lane with all three points. Despite taking the
lead in each half, through Billy Sharp and Scott Hogan, it was Andreas Weimann’s hat-trick that won it for the Robins. And Wilder admitted it was a frustrating day at the office, in front of a crowd in excess of 30,000.
He remarked: “It has always been about how we respond, and it always will be. We’ve shown previously it’s a tremendous quality in my time here and we’re going to have to do it again. “It’s disappointing for everybody, the
day was set up, we’ve taken the lead twice, but conceded three really poor goals. “Jack (O’Connell) having to come off didn’t help us, the last two goals both come in his area, and all three goals we’re poor on reflection.
“Enda (Stevens) slashes at a clearance for the first, then Dean (Henderson) loses it in the sun, it should be a routine save for him.” The Blades boss added: “At 2-2, what should I do? Do we go five at back and see it out, but we’re in the industry to win games, unfortunately we’ve been caught out and lost the game, but I’d rather have that ambition in my team to try and
win. “We weren’t very good first-half, we kept turning the ball over and if you keep doing that against good players they will hurt you, regardless of shape. “We got ourselves back in it and our shape allowed us to get in front, from there we should be the only winners, but full credit to Bristol City, they deserve an enormous amount of credit.”
