COUNCIL FUNDS ‘E-BIKES’ FOR POLICE PATROLS IN NORTH ROTHERHAM Police Community Support Officers (PCSOs) in Rotherham will have more power in their pedals after securing funding from Rotherham Council to purchase electric bicycles. Police Community Support Officers (PCSOs) in Rotherham will have more power in their pedals after securing funding from
Rotherham Council to purchase electric bicycles. Councillors from, Hoober, Rawmarsh, Swinton, Valley and Wath wards provided £2318.40 from their ward budgets for two e-bikes for use by South Yorkshire Police (SYP) on its patrols around the northern part of the borough. The idea came out of the Wath Ward
Community Action Partnership (CAP), which coordinates activity locally between the Council, Police and other partners. The bikes are stickered up with SYP markings and even include a front-mounted blue flashing light. Councillor Jayne Elliot, ward member for Wath said, “These bikes will allow our PCSOs to get around the borough
more easily and enable them to be more responsive to the needs of our community. As councillors we are more than delighted to be able to fund this project. “This is a great example of partnership working between the Council and South Yorkshire Police, and one which will have a direct benefit to the community we serve.”
Rotherham North Neighbourhood Team Inspector Caroline Bakewell said: “The bikes are a great addition to the team as the officers have large geographical areas to cover. “Using the bikes means they can be visible and accessible to more people in the community. “We are grateful to our local councillors for funding these, they will be well used.” The e-bikes are already in use by PCSOs Paul Gray and Dave Wright on their regular patrols.

STARTING WELL - LIVING WELL - AGEING WELL THE NEW HEALTH STRATEGY FOR THE CITY Sheffield is committed to reducing and eliminating health inequalities in the city. Health inequalities affect everyone and action is being taken to continue to tackle them from now until 2024. These plans have been informed by an assessment of the current and future health, care and wellbeing needs of the people of Sheffield. The ‘Sheffield Joint Health and Wellbeing Strategy’ states that it is not right that some people can expect to
live a less healthy life because of who they are or where they live and it highlights the three main areas that contribute to a healthy life: Starting Well, Living Well and Ageing Well. Councillors will be asked to approve this strategy on 17th April at Sheffield City Council’s cabinet meeting. It paints an accurate and clear picture of how people are doing in the city; whether they are well and likely to stay well for a long time or not, what will help them
stay well and what the barriers are to them keeping well physically and emotionally. The aim is to improve the health and wellbeing of the poorest and most vulnerable the fastest. The Sheffield Joint Health and Wellbeing Board is aware that ‘reaching our ambitions will require not just the insight, commitment and action of the partners around the Board, but that of all partners and stakeholders across Sheffield.’ The Board commits to
‘focusing its attention on these ambitions, using its time and resources to challenge the system to agree together what needs to change to get there, and then work together to do just that.’ Short term actions will follow the strategy and as no one sector has the answer to these difficult challenges it will be important for people and communities to work with services and business to deliver this strategy. Work will focus on the person from birth

to going to school; how a child develops, has a good education and then transitions to independence, how important it is for that person to have access to a home that supports their health and to have the opportunity for fulfilling work and the resources to support their needs. It will also focus on how that person should be able to walk or cycle in their local area whatever their age or ability, have access to care and support, meaningful social contact and an end to their life with dignity in a place of their choice.

While the Sun in your sign can bring clarity, you may need to keep your wits about you as Mercury continues to liaise with Neptune. Although Mercury will turn direct this week, it is still not the best time to rush into commitments, so try to pace yourself Aries. Call for more…
While a focus on your relationship zone can encourage you to be more direct with key people Libra, it may be difficult when it comes to someone you see every day. As Venus enters Pisces though, your natural sensitivity and tact can make this easier. Call for more astral advice…
As Venus moves into your social sector, her presence can bring warmth and added enjoyment to informal events. And there is the possibility of a conversation or encounter that has something delightful about it. It could be an invite for a date or news that makes you smile. Call for more…
Do you really know how someone feels about you? This week, talking might confuse rather than make things clearer. They may be perfectly sincere, and yet you could doubt their words. Be prepared for some sparkling insights around midweek, as Venus aspects Uranus. Call for more…
A nebulous influence involving Mercury your ruler, can make it difficult to see how matters might pan out. From next week, as the planet of talk and thought gets back into its forward stride, things get easier. And with Mars in your sign, you’ll be truly in your element. Call for more news…
This perhaps isn’t the best week to organize work on your home or attempt a DIY job, as things may not go to plan. Wait until next week, when logical Mercury will have turned direct and ended its liaison with Neptune, as you will have much better results. Call for more astral advice…
With a focus on your sector of far horizons, you might yearn for a place that holds pleasant memories for you. An opportunity for a reunion might encourage you and another to keep in touch more regularly, while an unexpected invite could be something to relish. Call for more…
This isn’t a good time to commit, as a plan might not be what it seems. Next week you should have more clarity. You could make a new friend, as a sparkling encounter brings you together with someone who seems like a breath of fresh air and worth getting to know. Call for more…
While you may be ready for adventures, you might also have a mystery to solve, and it could take most of this week to get to the root of this. With Mercury slowing prior to turning direct and linking to Neptune, you may have to rely on your instincts to make any headway. Call for more…
Try to keep money matters simple, as there is less chance of losing out. As Mercury slows prior to turning direct this week, it also keeps pace with Neptune, and hints that a bargain may not be all it seems. On an artistic note, you may be drawn to a vintage item for the home. Call for more…
You may not be in the mood to put up with those who are unreliable. And the Sun’s presence in an intense zone, might inspire you to be firm if they seem to be wasting your time. As Mercury turns direct though, confusing situations can slowly be sorted out to your satisfaction. Call for more…
An invite out-of-the-blue could be quite delightful, and might encourage you to engage with a certain person more often. Still, you may be baffled by someone’s mood and find it hard to understand why they are behaving so. Don’t try too hard Pisces. Call for more astral advice…

sleep apnoea - the facts explained
Do you often feel lethargic, even after a long sleep? Do you find yourself waking throughout the night or get complaints about your snoring? There is a chance you may have sleep apnoea (SA). The most common type of SA is obstructive SA (OSA), where the throat muscles and tongue relax and collapse into the airway during sleep, blocking airflow. This causes a person to abruptly and repeatedly wake for a few seconds at a time. It is estimated that approximately 3.9 million people in the UK have OSA. However, only 700,000 are currently diagnosed. Four things to know: 1) It’s linked to health conditions, including heart disease, gout, arthritis & more 2) it also affects mental wellbeing - apnoea & depression often go hand in hand 3) PAP Therapy can change patients’ lives for the better 4) Clean your PAP machine regularly for optimum results Common causes include: • Anatomy – the shape of a person’s nose, airways, throat, neck or jaw • Family history • Being male and over 40 years old • Obesity, drinking too much alcohol, smoking or other health conditions How do you treat SA? The most effective treatment for moderate to severe OSA is Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP). UNEARTHED FROM THE ARCHIVES – WHEN THE HITMAN LIT UP BONFIRE NIGHT AT THE ROXY It was the long lost late night episode that proved Sheffield’s Roxy venue really was the king of late 1980s clubland – and its re-discovery has finally made a sleepless night that bit more worthwhile for one Brinsworth resident. It was Bonfire Night, Saturday November 5th, 1988, and the city’s Roxy nightclub was packed to the rafters. Over 2,000 clubgoers knew it was their chance to shine on national TV as they were recording legendary nightclub-based show, the Hitman & Her, starring Pete Waterman and Michaela Strachan. Local crowds ensured the Roxy was a sell out as the likes of chart toppers like the London Boys and Royal House from New York performed and various Sheffield clubbers were plucked out of the audience to participate in regular games such as “pass the mic!” and “showing out”. Joe Roberts remembers the night well: “The fact the show was coming created a buzz for weeks before in Sheffield. It was our chance to grab a bit of the limelight in the day before social media and mobile phones. We loved it!”
The show was recorded live, edited on-the-fly and broadcast later that night – often not being screened until 3am. June Feek’s son was that excited to appear on the show he rang his mum at home in Brinsworth to ensure she recorded it. June Feek, who is now 68, said: “I ended up having to stay up until about 4am to ensure it was recorded!” Her son, Chris, came forward with the VHS tape which has been kept safe for over 30 years. Organisers of the forthcoming ‘Back To The Roxy’ reunion party are planning to screen parts of the rare footage at the event which is being at the 02 Academy on Saturday, May 4th. You can view the Hitman & Her episode here: https://youtu.be/v0_sqNt-70U

Wedding Guide
A POST-WEDDING TO-DO LIST Once everything is settled down, you’ve experienced the best day of your life and you’ve been on a honeymoon of a lifetime, you may experience wedding blues. It’s super stressful planning a wedding, but you can’t help feeling upset that it’s all over. Well, if you want a few wedding jobs after everything’s over; fear not! There are still postwedding bits and bobs to do.
The Dress There are loads of things you can do with your dress postwedding. The most popular option is to get it cleaned and preserved. You don’t have to get it professionally cleaned, but when you do take it out of the closet five years later, you don’t want to see or smell stale champagne and sweat stains. Alternatively, you could opt for a ‘Trash the Dress’ photoshoot. This is less appealing because, as the name suggests, your dress may get ruined. However, you get lasting memories and some more amazing photos Thank You Notes/Letters for the photo album. Perhaps This doesn’t have to be much go go-karting with your and it doesn’t have to be to husband in your wedding everyone who attended. It’s gear or throw paint or swim just nice to send out a small in the sea. It’s so much fun thank you note perhaps to and what will you use your your closest family or those dress for anyway when it’s who brought gifts. It might sat in the attic? be worth asking for these when you buy the rest of Return Unwanted Gifts your stationery if you have There will always be a few a professional stationer – not-exactly-your-style gifts. it’s good to keep a theme Even if you have an online gift list, some great aunts or throughout.
distant grannies won’t know how to use the ‘interweb’ and buy you something a little random. Weddings are expensive, so don’t feel bad returning them. Just make sure you do it sooner rather than later or you may go past the return date.
but save yourself future headaches by sitting down and changing your name legally on all of your necessary legal documents post-wedding (driving license, passport, insurance etc).
Order Your Photos and Wedding Album The most exciting part; relive your wedding all over again! Order a photo album and don’t scrimp and save; in the years to come, you want to look through the photos of your day in something special. This may already be included in your photography package so double check. If you had a videographer too, make sure to order DVDs. This is a really special way to relive your day, hearing the laughs, chats and looks of awe from your guests, bringing everything Legally Change Your Name back to life. This can be a headache, Buy Wanted Gifts If you did have a gift list, and some items on here still haven’t been bought, use the money from your returned unwanted gifts to buy something of value to you. If you’re worried about that aunt who will say ‘where’s that beautiful teapot I bought you for your wedding,’ or ‘why do you never where the wedding clogs I got you,’ you can tell them the truth. Say it was very kind of them but not your style, so you returned the gift and bought this instead. Having something physical to show them will say that their efforts were still valued.

Vibration White Finger?
An increasing demand for skilled healthcare professionals has led to a shortage of allied healthcare workers, especially phlebotomists - the skilled healthcare professionals who take your blood. Demand is at an all-time high with hospitals, clinics and GP Surgeries offering a golden opportunity for that “longed for” career change! If you have good people skills and manual dexterity, and like the idea of working in a busy healthcare environment, a phlebotomist job may be just the job for you! Many people enter this profession when they are looking for a career change or a fresh start and they often have no previous qualifications or experience in healthcare. Phlebotomists can work part time (usually mornings) but also may choose to work full time as well as weekends, holidays and bank work. Blood samples are usually collected before mid-day and then analysed in your local hospital’s Path Lab in the afternoon. “We train people from all walks of life and all ages” explains Amy, Geopace office manager. “We’ve had school leavers, shop assistants, receptionists, beauticians and dental nurses, as well as telesales staff, unemployed and the retired who are looking for a challenge. We also have referrals from JobCentres (DWP), who can sometimes pay for your course in full if you are eligible” says Amy. Once you are on the healthcare career ladder there are often opportunities to progress into other areas, such as working in the hospital path lab or other departments. Promotion is much easier once you are “on the ladder” and have some experience behind you. Many Geopace students are now working as phlebotomists throughout the UK and a few have even chosen to work abroad where there is often a similar shortage and growing demand for this specialised skill. An interesting booklet featuring student’s “Success Stories” is written by the student’s themselves and looks at how they have made the move from wide and varied backgrounds to find themselves now working as phlebotomists. A copy can be downloaded from the Geopace website’s testimonials page. If you like the idea of a challenging career in healthcare and particularly in phlebotomy then this may be the perfect move for you! The comprehensive training course last a full two days and culminates in the award of a nationally recognised and accredited certificate. “We practice taking blood from artificial arms”, says Amy “and everyone on our course has a lot of fun! We get a great deal of satisfaction later on when we hear from our students that they are working for their local GP surgery or in their local hospital.”

NIGHT STRIDER IS BACK WITH A NEW ROUTE FOR 2019! Night Strider is back for a fifth year of colour, fun and fantastic fundraising on the streets of Sheffield. And to celebrate its fifth anniversary, the popular St Luke’s Hospice autumn charity spectacular is launching a new route and some new attractions! Night Strider – sponsored by Pricecheck and Gripple - is the annual nocturnal half marathon and 10k walking challenge that aims to raise more than £120,000 towards patient care at Sheffield’s only hospice. Last year’s event saw more than a thousand fully illuminated St Luke’s supporters take to the streets as darkness fell on the city on an October evening. And already entries are coming in for Night Strider 2019, which makes its return on October 5 – and promises to be the biggest and best yet!
Starting out from a new launch point in Sheffield’s Peace Gardens – where even the famous fountains will be transformed into distinctive St Luke’s pink - the walk takes in some of Sheffield’s finest locations as it heads out towards Ecclesall on a new and improved reverse route before heading back to the city centre finish line. With no running involved, there’s plenty of time to take in the city’s best known views by moonlight as walkers embark on their nocturnal challenge. Either a full half marathon distance or a shorter 10k route, Night Strider is open to everybody over the age of 10 - though participants aged 10 to 17 must be registered and accompanied by another participant aged 18 or over - and is suitable for all ages and abilities. Wheelchair users are
encouraged to take part in Night Strider but due to the nature of the route and distance it is advisable they should source suitable assistance throughout the challenge. “This is our fifth year of Night Strider and every year we find ourselves more overwhelmed than ever before by the response from our supporters,” said St Luke’s Events Coordinator Rachel Spofforth. “With a new route to enjoy, we are
confident that this year’s participants will enjoy striding together more than ever before, knowing that with every step they will be helping us raise the vital funds needed to ensure we can continue providing the very best care for all our patients and their families. “Come along and join the party – it’s a great family night out for anybody who wants to support a fantastic cause.” There is an Early Bird discount offer of £20 person available until June 30. After that the individual entry fee is £25 - to sign up simply visit www.nightstrider. co.uk

NEW ANNUAL SNOOKER CHAMPIONSHIP TO BE HELD IN SHEFFIELD With the World Professional Snooker Championship starting in Sheffield this week, the World Professional Billards and Snooker Association (WPBSA) has announced a new major annual snooker tournament that will see the game’s icons go head to head for the ultimate legend title. The ROKiT World Seniors Snooker Championship is coming to the Crucible Theatre as part of a new partnership with Sheffield City Council to give the city a second major snooker event each year. Legends such as Stephen Hendry and Jimmy White join a field of 20 players from 16 countries who will battle it out over four days to see who will lift the World Seniors Championship trophy. Also for the very first time, within their four-day stay, a session will be dedicated to
showcase the talents of the World Women’s Snooker (WWS) Tour and the World Disability Billiards and Snooker (WDBS) Tour. Jason Ferguson, Chairman of the WPBSA, said: “It’s great news to place the World Seniors Championship in the venue where our legends created their legacy. “Being able to use the event to also showcase the talents of the women’s and the disability tours sends an important message for our sport and also opens up the dream of playing in the Crucible Theatre for everyone.” The event takes place from 15-18 August at the Crucible Theatre Sheffield, home of the annual World Snooker Championship since 1977. Paul Billington, Director of Culture and Environment at SCC, said: “We’re delighted to bring a second
major snooker event to Sheffield, the true home of the sport. Many of the legends who will take part in the ROKiT World Seniors Championship made their name in our iconic Crucible Theatre, where this new tournament will also take place. “As well as the chance to watch legends from the men’s game, this event showcases women’s and disability snooker at the highest level opening up the game to a whole new audience. “We look forward to welcoming snooker’s elite and many visiting fans to Sheffield for what
promises to be a thrilling showdown.” The competition will see 20 of snooker’s bestloved personalities play over 12 sessions across four days. Tickets go on sale for all 12 sessions on Thursday 18 April. Tickets to the women’s and disability sessions can be purchased for just £1.47 with any full price World Seniors ticket. Tickets will also be available for a VIP meet experience with senior players, that will be held on the final day. All tickets will be available through Sheffield Theatres.

I’ve had a very poor session on the bank this week, which is very disappointing as I was really looking forward to targeting bream from a forty acre reservoir. It’s a club water, another jewel on the card at Stoke-on-Trent Angling Society, and on it’s day, can be a mecca for bream with ton up hauls easily achievable, and more importantly, it’s an oasis of calm amidst a beautiful setting. I arrived early to be met with awful bream conditions, a bitter breeze hacking across the water, bright sunlight and high air pressure, but no matter, I was fishing and that was it. I looked up the bank, and in the distance spotted another angler, so I waved, but was ignored and thought no more of it; he obviously hadn’t seen me, so I commenced setting out my stall for a day of slab fishing… I found shelter behind a wooden building at the water’s edge, and quickly pieced together my feeder rod, coupled with a 3000 series reel loaded with 6lb line, and worked out which set up to use. The reservoir is shallow at this particular spot, but has an old river bed running along the lake bed at about sixty yards but bottom weed can still be an issue. As a result, I slipped on a braided feeder link to keep the mainline out of the weedy fronds, and added one of the long range Guru feeders. A bead went up the mainline next, then a swivel with mono link attached, and a pre-tied mono hook link and to stop it tangling in flight, a Spotted Fin anti-tangle boom went over the swivel… perfect! I know that I can use this rig at ranges out to eighty yards with very little

COUNTY SENIOR FOOTBALL with Michael Clarke
It was another busy week in the County Senior League with 18 league games taking place this week across different matchdays. The first League Cup Semi-Final also took place on Thursday night. League Cup Semi-Final North Gawber Colliery remain in the hunt for a treble, after they overcame Wombwell Main in the first League Cup Semi-Final. Two goals Matthew Thornton helped the Premier Division leaders to a 3-1 victory in a lively encounter at the Look Local Stadium. Premier Division With league leaders North Gawber not in action this week, second placed Dodworth Miners Welfare and third placed defending champions Swinton Athletic had the chance to heap some pressure on the pace-setters. Intriguingly the fixture list also pitted them against each other on Monday. However it was the result neither wanted in the end as they shared the spoils with a 1-1 draw. This now means North Gawber have a three point lead and a game in hand going into their last four fixtures. It was a mixed week for both Oughtibridge WMSC and Denaby United. Denaby opened their week with a 5-1 win over relegated South Kirkby Colliery. Mid-table Oughtibridge had a tougher midweek losing 2-0 at home to Stocksbridge Park Steels Reserves. Oughtibridge then went onto beat Denaby 4-1 on the weekend. Denaby remain second bottom, after third bottom Handsworth Parramore Reserves leapfrogged them again on Saturday following their 6-0 home win against South Kirkby. Two days after their Semi-Final loss Wombwell Main were back in action at home against Frecheville. However, they fell again to defeat, losing 3-2 at home. A single goal from Ryan Ruddiforth was enough to give High Green Villa a vital 1-0 win over
chance of a tangle, so was quietly confident that my bait would be well presented. To begin, I usually fire out at least ten big feeders full of bait to kick start the swim and clip up to ensure accuracy. Within a few minutes, everything was ready, so a couple of maggots went onto the hook, and the rig was cast out to the clip, and counted down in eight feet of water where it settled to await some action. I’d kept my eye on the other angler, and hadn’t seen him catch, in fact he’d barely moved, hunkered down against the bitter wind. It was tricky to see exactly what he was up to as he was a couple of hundred yards further up the bank, but I was keen to see if he had much success. Whilst glancing up at him, I also watched the tip intently as it bounced around in the wind, hoping for a positive indication to alert me to a slimy slab! I’d chosen a fairly stiff tip to combat both the wind and distance then found that drifting weed was also causing false bites, but I just had to keep at it. The feeder was recast monotonously every fifteen minutes, each cast adding to the growing bed of bait, and eventually, after an hour, the faintest quiver of the rod tip had my attention. It was definitely a bite, but a very tentative one and as I struck upwards, I felt the kick of a tiddler at the other end and duly skidded a small perch across the water to the bank; at least I hadn’t blanked! As the wind increased in velocity, I was really struggling to see anything indicated by the bouncing tip. A few barely perceptible tremors over the next few hours were about as positive as it got until I finally had one pull which came from a small skimmer of perhaps six ounces. I tried everything throughout the session to encourage a bite, changing the hook, hook link length, feeder link, feeder and a plethora of different bait combinations, but that was it… a small skimmer and even smaller perch… not much of a return for a full day on the bank… I’ve used similar tactics dozens of times at this venue, so I know they work, but on the day, the bream just

They were 1-0 at home against Jubilee Sports on Wednesday and then they took a well-earned point from a 2-2 draw away to Grimethorpe Sports on Saturday. Division One It was another big week for Division One Leaders Burgreave FC. On Wednesday night they were made to dig deep for a 3-2 victory away against Boynton Sports. They then had Saturday off knowing that if results went there way they could be crowned champions. However, a 7-0 victory for third placed Ecclesfield Red Rose 1915 against Caribbean Sports means they will have to wait a little longer. Second placed AFC Dronfield were also victorious, winning 2-0 against Denaby Main, however, Dronfield cannot catch the leaders as they have now completed their fixture list. It was a busy week for the aforementioned Boynton. In addition to their loss against Burngreave, they drew 2-2 away against fourth bottom Caribbean Sports to climb above Sheffield Bankers into third bottom. They then drew 3-3 against the Bankers on Saturday. Houghton Main kept their hopes of promotion alive, with a 10-0 away win against bottom side Millmoor Juniors. Houghton Main are three points behind third placed Ecclesfield (who have a game in hand) with two games remaining and five behind second placed Dronfield. Mid-table Sheffield Medics were 2-0 winners at Norton Playing Fields against Kiveton Park. Division Two Things were less busy in the Second Division, with just two games this week. On Wednesday night Thurcroft Miners Institute claimed a hard-earned point from a 2-2 draw away against mid-table Dodworth Miners Welfare Reserves. On Saturday Swinton Athletic Reserves were 2-0 winners at home against Ardsley Athletico Juniors.

didn’t want to feed; perhaps they had other things on their minds, after all, it’s close to spawning time. It was time to go, so I packed up, hoisting everything back onto the barrow and then decided to see if the other chap had caught. I hadn’t seen him put a net out, so slowly wandered down towards him. He disappeared as I travelled around the curve of the bankside, but when I got back on the path, I realised exactly why I hadn’t seen him catch… ‘he’ was a camo clad dummy designed to flummox the local cormorant population, and certainly not the ignorant angler I thought he was! I learned two things on the day; sometimes, it’s just not going to happen, and secondly, I must make an appointment at Specsavers… better luck next time!

SEMI PICKS UP CHAMPIONSHIP MARCH PLAYER OF THE MONTH AWARD
Rotherham United midfielder Semi Ajayi has been named the Sky Bet Championship Player of the Month for March. Ajayi’s power and will to win were always suited to the transition from central defence to midfield. Less predictable were five goals in five games,
three courtesy of prodigious leaps and flying headers, two immaculately timed low shots. Ajayi said: “It is a massive honour, and it is something I am really pleased to receive. I have to say though that the award is a team effort, I wouldn’t be in the position to collect the award without my team mates. “During the month we performed well in a number of games, picking up some vital points. It was a good all round team effort. I am also hugely grateful to the staff, who have been brilliant. “It was a good month, and to be given the award ahead of some very stiff opposition is even more pleasing. “The season is coming to a close now, but from a team perspective we are still fighting hard to keep this club in The Championship, and from a personal point of view this will also give me confidence going into the remaining games this season.” Sky Sports’ EFL pundit Don Goodman said: “When the situation is as desperate as it is for Rotherham at the moment, a point can make all the difference. “It’s no exaggeration to say that if Rotherham manage to stay in the division, it will be down – in no small part – to Ajayi’s goals from midfield.” Sky Bet EFL trader Ivor Davies said: “Semi Ajayi for a defender was in the goalscoring form of his life in March and his five goals in five games and excellent performances had given The Millers a fighting chance of staying in the division.”
FIGHTING SPIRIT THERE AGAIN WARNE MILLERS boss Paul Warne was quick to hail his side’s never-say-die spirit, as they earned a vital point in their battle for Championship survival, against all the odds, following a heroic second-half comeback at Stoke City. The Millers looked to be heading for defeat at the bet365 Stadium after goals from Sam Vokes and Sam Clucas put the hosts in charge at the interval. However, Warne’s side turned the game on its head with a superb second half performance as Michael Smith’s header from Anthony Forde’s corner halved the deficit before Matt Crooks’ first goal for the club put them back on level terms – with a quarter an hour remaining. In a late rally from the visitors, the Millers almost earned an unlikely victory when sub Joe Newell was denied by Jack Butland while Crooks had an effort cleared off the line by Ryan Shawcross before being denied by the England stopper. Speaking to the assembled media afterwards, Warne was bursting with pride at his side’s second half-display, while being slightly disappointed that they were not duly rewarded by taking the three points back to South Yorkshire. “I asked the players for a response at half-time and
29
we were really good in the second half,” Warne enthused. “The subs made a positive impact. We were unlucky that we did not win it and in fairness, their goalkeeper made three unbelievable saves. “We got the second goal and there was still 20 minutes left and I really fancied us to win it. We were the stronger team for most of it.” Despite the nature of their second half display, Warne was disappointed that his side had a mountain to climb at the interval by being two goals down after having the better of the early exchanges. “I thought we started the game really well,” Warne added. “In the first 25 minutes it was all us. They scored with their first attack. At two-nil, I saw the lads’ body language, and I think they thought they were not going to get anything out of it. We wanted to get to get them in at half-time at two-nil, so we could get into them, in a nice way and we did that.” Warne was quick to praise the second-half impact of substitute Matt Crooks, who came off the bench to make a decisive impact, by firstly netting the equaliser before having a personal duel with the Stoke rearguard and Butland, as he looked to net the all-important winner, late on, but he was denied on countless occasions. “He’s always had it,” Warne said of the former Northampton Town midfielder. “It’s difficult for players who come in January. He’s jumped up two leagues and he’s had to get used to what we want out of him. I just had a good feeling about him today. He was a real positive for us today.”

MCCANN HAILS FIRST-HALF DOMINANCE AGAINST PLYMOUTH Grant McCann praised his side’s performance in Saturday’s win over Plymouth Argyle, feeling Rovers saw out the game comfortably after taking control in the first half. Goals from Danny Andrew and Tommy Rowe both struck before half-time to secure three points for Rovers, and McCann felt his side could have had more goals to their name. “I thought we were very good in the first-half, and we possibly should have had two or three more goals. I think we had 26 shots in the game so we were probably unfortunate not to get more, but I was pleased on the whole,” he said.

“Plymouth came into the game a bit more in the second-half, but I thought we looked comfortable across the whole game. Plymouth went more direct in the second half, but the two centre-halves dealt with everything that came their way. We’ve got very good centre-halves and they’re all keeping each other on their toes. “In the first-half we showed we can play, in the second-half we showed we can fight. The boys are starting games well on the front foot, momentum is growing and they’re almost killing the games off in the first-half – especially at home.” Rovers have recorded four consecutive wins while missing some key players, and McCann is pleased to be able to welcome more back for the crucial closing games of the regular season. “The most pleasing thing at the moment is that when we’re losing players through injury, other players are coming in, stepping up and putting in a good performance,” he added. “We’ve still got players to come back like Ben Whiteman, Joe Wright, Ian Lawlor and the young boys are pushing for places too, the competition for places is getting better and better and I’m really pleased with our strength in depth.”
50 NOT OUT FOR DANNY ANDREW Danny Andrew has relished a season of regular first-team football, and was delighted to make his 50th appearance of the campaign with a goal. An injury limited the left-back to just six appearances in his first season in South Yorkshire, and takes great pride in the way he has bounced back.
“That was my 50th game this season, compared to the six I had last year, and I’m quite proud of what I’ve achieved personally - we’ve had a good season as a team so far and I want to help us achieve promotion,” he said. “It’s good playing in that back four at the moment, and the back-to-back clean sheets have shown that it doesn’t matter who plays, we’re all comfortable playing with each other, we all keep it tight at the back and allow those up top to do the rest.” Andrew’s free-kick helped Rovers to a 2-0 win over Plymouth on Saturday, keeping them firmly in the driving seat for a play-off finish and ensuring confidence is high for Good Friday’s trip to Sunderland. “We have to focus on the next game now, it’s a big one coming up with a trip to Sunderland on Friday,” he added. “It’s on TV too we know there’ll be a lot of people watching, and it could be a big tester should we stay in the play-off places and have to face them again.”

THE BEST TEAM WON Steve Bruce conceded that the best team won following the 1-0 defeat to Leeds at Elland Road on Saturday. The Owls went down to
a Jack Harrison goal in the second half as they finally succumbed to relentless pressure from the promotion hopefuls. And Bruce told swfc. co.uk: “There was no
doubt that the best team won, Leeds played very well. “They moved the ball well, they are very fit, and they showed why they are where they are in the league table.
“I thought we defended very well, we were resolute, we got our tackles in but Leeds got the goal that you have to say they deserved.” Bruce picked out Keiren Westwood as his
standout performer after the in-form goalkeeper pulled a string of saves from the top drawer. He added: “He was outstanding today, he’s made some very important saves for us today, he really frustrate them. “But he’s a top-class goalkeeper you know,
the first save in the first half from the boy Roberts was the save of the season, you won’t see better than that. “Keiren has been marvellous for me since I came into the building, he has the experience and that air of authority at the back.”

sheets in the 23 games (league only) he has not played in this year, compared to the 11 in 19 games he has played, so it understandable as to why it’s been asked. Luhukay always defended his choice of picking Dawson by saying that Westwood was not picked because he was not fit when he became Manager of the club, so he wanted to keep with the players he knew. This showed a lack of judgement on his behalf as it was, and still is, plain to see that Westwood is the number one goalkeeper at the Club. Both Dawson and Wildsmith are great young keepers, but they need to be analysing every detail of Westwood’s performances this season and see what they need to add to their game. I believe that, on the most part,
it is communication. Westwood is constantly communicating with his back four. Making sure they are aware of the opposition’s movements. You can see that this has given the whole defence a boost of confidence. Knowing that Westwood is there to help them in every way possible. You only have to look at Palmer, Lees and Hector’s form in recent months to see how much having Westwood behind them is helping them with their game. Now the big decision for Bruce to make is whether or not he deserves a new contract. Looking at the stats it’s a no brainer. If we’re going to look to push on from the good form in the second half of this season into next season, then it’s a must.

MILLWALL STALEMATE FRUSTRATES WILDER The Blades boss was left frustrated by Millwall’s late equaliser at Bramall Lane. Chris Wilder acknowledged the Blades had missed a big opportunity, having drawn with Millwall at Bramall Lane. Jake Cooper scored
with a last-gasp header for the Lions, after Ben Marshall had missed a penalty following John Egan’s red card, but Wilder was annoyed his side failed to build on Gary Madine’s opener. The boss remarked: “It was a difficult game for us and
the attitude of the opposition made it tough from the off, in terms of how they approached the game. “We made a positive substitution when Bash went off and we felt that was the best way to get the first goal. “We created a few bits before half-time and
my message to the players was to play forward quicker, play up to Gaz and down the sides to Billy and trust that our shape would work and it did. “But as soon as we scored the goal we went backwards, we can’t get away from it. I’m not chucking
the players under the bus, but we needed that second, not to start playing safe.” Wilder added: “I wanted us to play forward, we had to go and get the second goal. When you play backwards and drop off you invite the opposition on and things like what we’ve seen can happen. “We should have kept on the front foot, play forward, play in their half an ask them
questions of them. They showed more ambition but that should have helped us exploit the gaps that developed. “Millwall were there for the taking, I’ve told the players we’ve got to go and win games and to win games you need to score goals. We should have gone on and scored a second and a third.”

FLECK ADMITS MILLWALL FRUSTRATIONS Reflecting on an action-packed encounter at Bramall Lane, which ended with Jake Cooper cancelling out Gary Madine’s opener, United’s Scottish midfielder felt the Blades should have managed the lead better, despite having John Egan dismissed, following injuries to Chris Basham and Billy Sharp. John Fleck
acknowledged Saturday’s draw against Millwall was a setback. Reflecting on an action-packed encounter at Bramall Lane, which ended with Jake Cooper cancelling out Gary Madine’s opener, United’s Scottish midfielder felt the Blades should have managed the lead better, despite having John Egan dismissed, following injuries to Chris Basham and
Billy Sharp. He remarked: “I thought we started OK, then it turned into a scruffy game and it was always going to be tight. “We did well to get ourselves in front, but then we became sloppy in possession and it’s just one of those days. “We’ve got to move on as quickly as possible though, we’re disappointed with the result, but we can’t change it now.”
Fleck added: “We weren’t composed enough on the ball going forward. We ended up getting pinned back because we were giving the ball away and they kept just getting balls into our box and that’s what they are good at. “We’re used to playing a certain way, but in the last few games we’ve not been at our best, saying that there is still a way to go.”
RIP COLIN COLLINDRIDGE
support the war effort before joining the RAF. Guesting for Chesterfield, Notts County and Lincoln, he was recalled for the War Cup North competition early in 1944 and scored in the semi final at Villa Park. Colin played a huge part in securing the Football League North Championship and actually made his league debut against Liverpool in August 1946 - an incredible seven years after joining the club due to the conflict in Europe. Moving to Nottingham Forest in 1950, he won a Third Division Championship medal
with them before a spell with Coventry City, ending his league career there in 1956. In 77 wartime appearances he scored 36 goals and in 232 league appearances in the red and white stripes 95 goals. Up to recent times he regularly journeyed from his home in Newark to games and was always the life and soul of proceedings, his razorsharp mind could tell many a tale of an era in football long gone and he could recall with ease key moments in our proud history at a time of major change for the world. He will be well
remembered by all the staff fortunate to know him and deal with him at Bramall Lane, a real gentleman of the old school who outlived all others of his era he played side by side with Jimmy Hagan, Ernest Jackson, Jack Smith and many other great names from our past and was highly regarded by all as a striker of the highest quality. Colin really was the last of the line, ill health has plagued him in recent times, preventing Tony Currie from calling to see him on his 98th birthday last year.
All at Sheffield United are saddened to hear of the passing to a higher league of our oldest surviving player. Colin Collindridge was born in Barugh Green on 15th November 1920 and signed for the Blades, initially as an amateur, on 5th December 1938, becoming a professional in January 1939, making his first team debut just after the start of World War Two. At the start of the conflict he went back to his old job as a miner to
