CASTLEGATE: TONIGHT, THE STREETS ARE OURS Pop-up businesses are being given the chance to say “tonight, the streets are ours” as Exchange Street could become a new destination for food and other start-ups under the working title of Truelove’s Gutter Pop-ups. The council is looking for an operator to attract and accommodate pop-up businesses in the street. It is part of the wider regeneration strategy for Castlegate and builds on ideas developed by the Castlegate Partnership as well as previous one-off events like last year’s Castlegate Escape festival
which attracted thousands of people over a weekend of music and food. The name Truelove’s Gutter was brought to the attention of the world by the 2009 Richard Hawley album which took its title from a street in old Sheffield, roughly on the line of the current Exchange Street which remains one of the main streets of the Castlegate quarter. Richard, who launches his UK tour for new record Further tomorrow, said. “This part of Sheffield is very close to my heart I spent so much time as a child in the Castle Market
with my Grandparents , as a teenager in Kenny’s and Revolution records, Harrington’s clothes, Rand and also the Lady’s Bridge pub with my Dad and his mates discussing music amongst many other things. I learned so much here. “I’m so pleased to see the Truelove’s Gutter street name getting a new lease of life and Exchange Street being used for the creative endeavours of musicians of all ages to gain experience and encouragement with rehearsing, recording and performing.” The Council is inviting proposals to use the northern side of the
Exchange Street pedestrian area for pop-up structures housing small food outlets, shops, community and workspace. Converted shipping containers are a good example but other light timber or metal structures may be accepted. There are now many successful examples of similar ventures like Sheffield’s Peddlers Market (originally started in Arundel Lane but now in Neepsend) as well as in other cities like London’s Pop Brixton, Birmingham’s ‘Digbeth Dining Club’, Manchester’s ‘Grub Street Markets’ , Newcastle’s ‘Stack’ and Gateshead’s
AFFORDABLE LUXURY MOTORHOME HIRE & SALES
‘By the River Village’. In Castlegate the Council is particularly keen to see some space offered at an affordable rent to new startups in the food and crafts sectors from the immediate vicinity which includes Pitsmoor, Burngeave, Park and Manor and is interested to explore how this could be facilitated as a part of a sustainable business plan.

The UK’s own Ben Thompson is officially the reigning champion of the Ultimate Elvis Tribute Artist Contest, and he - along with two preceding Grand Champions - are coming to the UK this May, including one night only at Sheffield FlyDSA Arena on Thursday, 23rd May. Winning this accolade means Ben joins the ranks of arguably the most successful Elvis Tribute Artist of all time Shawn Klush, who won the inaugural competition in 2007, and popular star of the Las Vegas show ‘Legends in Concert’ Dean Z, who won the title in 2013. This means the Elvis Tribute Artist World Tour is the only UK tour to feature these three tribute artists, each crowned by Elvis Presley Enterprises as Ultimate Elvis Tribute Artist Champion. Ahead of the Elvis Tribute Artist World Tour, touring the UK this month, Ben travelled to Memphis to compete in the competition for the sixth time, having been placed in the top three in the previous five competitions. He successfully navigated the preliminary rounds and semi-final, and was pronounced the Ultimate Elvis Tribute Artist Grand Champion in August 2018. The arena tour, which due to demand recently added a string of dates for November 2019 following the 9-date Spring tour this May 2019, is the world’s largest and most successful touring Elvis tribute show, starring America’s finest Shawn Klush and Dean Z, and the UK’s Ben Thompson, backed by an incredible live band and orchestra. Shawn Klush first exploded onto the UK scene when millions of UK viewers tuned in to see him win BBC
One Television’s search for “The World’s Greatest Elvis”, hosted by Vernon Kay. Shortly after, Shawn was also crowned Ultimate Elvis Tribute Artist Champion after winning the first ever official contest held by Elvis Presley Enterprises in Memphis, Tennessee. Fellow American Elvis tribute, Dean Z, performs both the Early Years of Elvis and the 1968 Comeback Special. He is also a grand champion of the Ultimate Elvis Tribute Artist Contest and star of famous Las Vegas show – Legends In Concert. Looking forward to the UK tour, Dean Z said “I have to say that the Elvis fans in the UK are among the wildest and the most incredible fans that I ever get the chance to perform for… There’s something special about performing in the UK, I can’t quite put my finger on it but I think it is that the fans really do love Elvis and they show it throughout our performance.” This tour is your only opportunity to catch these three celebrated Elvis Tribute Artist’s in one phenomenal show, which has been taking the UK by storm with appearances in arenas and major theatres across the UK. Don’t miss The Elvis Tribute Artist World Tour live at Sheffield’s FlyDSA Arena, Thursday 23rd May 2019. Tickets can be purchased online at elvisworldtour.co.uk or flydsaarena.co.uk. Alternatively call the venue box office on 0114 256 56 56.

DRINK WISE AGE WELL HELPS OLDER ADULTS People who took part in Sheffield’s Drink Wise, Age Well programme cut the average amount of alcohol they drink on a typical day in half from 14 units to 7. At a follow up interview, six months after being discharged from the project, participants for the most part maintained this reduction. The National Lottery Community funded programme was first established in 2015 in response to increasing alcohol harm in the over 50s, with initial research showing that older adults were facing particular challenges when trying to get help for alcohol problems. New data now shows how many of the participants struggled with isolation and loneliness, with 74% of people surveyed drinking mainly at home alone. The most common reason older adults in Sheffield gave for increasing their drinking was relationship problems, followed by loss of sense of purpose (e.g. through retirement, children leaving home) and bereavement. Drink Wise, Age Well Sheffield Locality Manager, Emma Wells said, “We have reached a large number of people aged over 50 across Sheffield, many of whom have benefited not just from our health and well-being activities, but also the chance to access information about how alcohol can affect us as we age and explore ways to reduce consumption. None of this would have been possible without our volunteers, who design and lead many of our activities. 83% of people attending our social groups said they feel better in themselves as a result. This further highlights the positives that can be
gained from activities which bring people together in an informal and friendly setting and enable new friendships and skills to emerge”. Drink Wise, Age Well Sheffield is now into its final year of operation (until March 2020) but it is hoped that the most effective elements of the programme will carry on through being incorporated into general alcohol services, and peer support groups and social activities becoming selfsustaining. Emma Wells added, “Alcohol use and harm is increasing in our older population and it is crucial that we have a targeted approach to this. Whilst ensuring that alcohol treatment and support is accessible to people of all ages, it is also important to explore the underlying reasons for drinking including isolation and life transitions. The holistic approach of our programme has allowed us to address the problem while working with people to build their own resilience and connections within their communities.” Paul’s Story Paul was referred to Drink Wise, Age Well in 2015. Five years previously he had received a promotion at work and at the same time fell ill with severe cellulitis septicaemias. Following many years of abstinence Paul found himself “secretly self-medicating” again with alcohol. “My wife said she would throw me out if she ever found out I was drinking again and true to her word; that’s what she did. At the age of 51 I moved back with my parents and the drinking escalated. I thought I’d hit rock bottom – I’d lost my house, my wife, my young daughter and my job. Usually by lunchtime I’d have
had a bottle of vodka, mid-afternoon a bottle and a half. You do feel extremely lonely, as though you’re the only person going through it. I’d lost a lot of weight and wasn’t eating. I was going to the alcohol services, but I was just saying all the right things and then I’d be off. I needed something different. It was a matter of finding a little bit of hope. When I was referred to Drink Wise, Age Well I started spinning the same lines again but my support worker, Sian was very proactive. She said “we need to get you out the house and get you doing things”. So that’s what I did. I was doing arts and crafts, health walks and going to the allotment. I was getting more informal support which suited me a lot better. To be able to get out and about and meet people with shared experiences, it’s what helped me the most” However during this period Paul found that he was still drinking and needed a period of more intensive support. He went into rehab, and on coming out realised structure was crucial for him to maintain sobriety. “I found that focus through volunteering at Drink wise, Age Well. I got a sense of purpose, a reason to get out of bed in the morning. It gave me a real confidence boost. It’s true you do want to put something back, but it’s about your own recovery as well. Paid work was just a natural progression. Now, I’m working three nights a week, and seeing my daughter regularly. I’m driving a car again for the first time in 20 years cos I’m sober. I’ve been on holiday. I’d lost everything, but you can get it back. You can come back stronger”

DO YOU KNOW HOW TO HELP STROKE VICTIMS? BOUGHT • Over a quarter (27%) of the population don’t know that a stroke occurs in the brain – highlighting a lack of knowledge around the UK’s leading cause of disability. • Nearly half of UK adults know someone who has had a stroke (20 million people), but most admit to a lack of awareness and understanding needed to support stroke survivors in their recovery. Startling research unveiled shows nearly half (45%) of people(i) who know a survivor of stroke personally admitting that they are struggling to support them to make their best possible recovery, according to new findings published today by the Stroke Association. The research reveals that one important reason for the lack of stroke support for survivors stems from a lack of awareness of what stroke is and how it affects people. Shockingly, more than a quarter (27%) of the public don’t know where in the body a stroke occurs: the brain. For those that know a stroke survivor, a huge 82%(i) feel that a greater understanding of stroke would help them support the survivor better. All this, despite stroke being the country’s leading cause of disability. The research(i) also found that of those who know someone personally who has had a stroke: • Nine in 10 (95%) agreed that family and friends play an essential role in the recovery process. • Nearly half (46%) admitted wanting to do more to help the stroke survivor that they knew but lacked the knowledge to do so. • Nearly a fifth (18%) say they do not properly understand the overall impact of the condition.
In a separate survey of stroke survivors, more than four out of five (85%) of stroke survivors said the people they had daily contact with did not understand the impact of the stroke. This ‘knowledge gap’ is preventing survivors getting the support they need from those closest to them, and stopping survivors from making the best possible recovery to rebuild their lives after stroke. Jo Gotheridge, 44, was just 38 when she had her stroke. Jo said: “I began to notice some symptoms, such as lack of coordination, pins and needles and migraine like symptoms during the week. My condition soon got worse and I soon found I couldn’t write the word ‘and’ or even walk up the stairs.” Discussions with Jo’s quick thinking GP and doctors at the hospital soon revealed Jo had had a stroke. She was left with severe fatigue and cognitive difficulties. Jo has since learnt that her weight, lack of quality sleep and a lack of exercise may have played a part in her stroke. Jo said: “I was gobsmacked when I was told I would need to be checked by the stroke team. It was not something I could imagine happening to me at 38 but it did. What upset me at the time was people thinking it must have been a mini-stroke, it felt like they were down playing what had happened to me which tells me their needs to be more awareness. My stroke was actually a catalyst that helped me rebuild my life for the good. It gave me a second chance to appreciate all that was good in my life. I was desperately unhappy with my weight and didn’t exercise at all, which contributed towards my stroke. After many months and taking things very slowly at the gym, I got the exercise bug and
haven’t looked back – losing 4 stone. I have often said, ‘the stroke was a blessing that made me change my life’ and although it was a long, hard journey at times, with dark days initially and sacrifices made along the way, I now look forward and feel renewed and restored beyond belief”The charity published its findings to mark the launch of its newest campaign, Rebuilding Lives, which aims to showcase the challenges faced by stroke survivors and those who support them with their recoveries. Other findings reveal the damaging effects that stroke can have on social networks and relationships: • More than one in 10 respondents admitted to seeing the survivor less after the latter had a stroke. • More than one in six of those who know a stroke survivor, admitted spending less time with them because the latter was perceived as not being the same person following the stroke. • A quarter (25%) said there had been a drop in social activity on the part of the stroke survivor. Jacqui Cuthbert of the Stroke Association, comments: “A stroke happens in the brain, the control centre for who we are and what we can do. The impact varies depending on which part of the brain is affected. It could be anything from wiping out your speech and physical abilities, to affecting your emotions and personality. So, it’s a real challenge for everyone as they come to grips with this sudden and life changing event. These findings highlight the complexity of stroke and raises the desperate need amongst people to understand the impact of stroke in order to better support their loved ones.

With construction starting at Eyewitness Works this month, owners CAPITAL&CENTRIC have revealed how their plans will celebrate the former cutlery works’ rich history. The Eyewitness Works and Ceylon Works buildings have been a prominent resident on Milton street since 1852 – although the first registered building at the site was in 1838. For 150 years it was home to Taylor’s Eye Witness Ltd, a Sheffield success story producing pocket and kitchen knives in industrious pre-war Britain. Mausoleum of the Giants exhibition The buildings give a glimpse into the workings of the cutlery industry in the 19th century. Cutlery was grinded, hardened, buffed, filed and polished by hand in a series of workshops. Goods would arrive and depart by cart via one of the three connected internal courtyards. The layout of the works was typical of Sheffield’s metal trades and whilst built for industry, the fashionable Venetian windows demonstrate the importance of status at the time. The complex of workshops, set out in shallow buildings, were designed to maximise natural light with long work benches under the dual aspect windows. The two Grade II listed buildings will keep their original charm with residents able to enjoy centuriesold features such as the 40ft chimney, 150 year old pressing machines, Victorian safes, exposed brickwork and impressive timber roof structure. A new image of the new-look Eyewitness Works in Sheffield The courtyards will be reopened providing outside space and a cobbled street draped with festoon light-
ing and lined with trees and foliage. A new six-storey building will be constructed on the site of the former Brunswick Hotel – a pub built to serve the thirsty hordes of cutlery workers which closed in 1964. Adam Higgins, co-founder of CAPITAL&CENTRIC said: “As the custodians of Eyewitness Works it’s always been important to us that we celebrate its awesome history. The building is one of the last examples of the cutlery industry that made Sheffield famous across the world. We’ve loved discovering all the souvenirs of the past, like the Victorian safes, fireplaces and pressing machines. “You can live in a space that was once used to grind, file and polish cutlery. The workshops were designed to maximise natural light for the cutlery workers so the apartments and townhouses will be big, light and airy. We’re also keeping as many of the original features as we can, including the brickwork, timber roof and cobbles.” Social impact developer CAPITAL&CENTRIC recently announced its aspiration to spend up to £200m in the city centre over the next five to 10 years, including around the Milton Street site. They are already working on an urban vision for the wider area, which could include over 2,500 residential units, café-bars and restaurants to activate the street scene. The former cutlery works on Milton Street is currently hosting the Mausoleum of the Giants Solo Show by world renowned muralist Phlegm. Over 6,000 people visited the giant sculptures of mysterious creatures which were on display at Eyewitness Works.

ANGLER’S CORNER
with Clint Walker
This week, I set out for my first ‘proper’ carp session of the year. By ‘proper’, I mean with three rods, boilies and alarms etc, which is my least favourite way to fish, as I consider it camping, not fishing and if I wait long enough, something is sure to trip up, however I’m glad I did… I opted to fish at Gawsworth Fishery in Cheshire and chose to set my stall out on Wood Pool, the designated specimen water which holds carp to around 28lb, and catfish which go even bigger. It was a maximum effort Spotted Fin attack, with rods baited with Pink Pepper Squid, The Catalyst and Smokey Jack baits. I’d soaked a couple of kilos of Catalyst boilies overnight in Finamino liquid, the majority of which were fired out to my pre-selected spots as free offerings, keeping just a few for hookbaits to be used sparingly during the remainder of the day. With all three rods on the mark, I sat back for my first brew of the day… bliss. Rain was forecast, and it didn’t take long for the heavens to darken, the air temperature to plummet, and the first fat blobs of rain to splatter the brolly. The wind wouldn’t settle, so blustery gusts carried rain under my shelter and wetted everything, but it didn’t matter how I squared up, I couldn’t get out of it properly and after just a couple of hours, I was considering either moving, or packing up! A break in the rain saw the owner, affable John Birch, arrive on his trusty quad bike to take payment for day tickets. I like John, he really is a nice chap, and a few minutes chatter is always enjoyable, but I was dismayed indeed to find out that hardly any fish had been caught

during the previous week! He told me that the Easter weekend had seen an absolute deluge of bait hitting the water, and as a result the fish had completely switched off! I was left with little option but to move to a different lake if I wanted a realistic chance of fish… Fortunately, I was sited in the corner of Wood Pool which gave easy access to two other lakes, and I quickly slipped onto Park Pool next door. Earlier in the day, I’d already had a wander around and noted a few fish, chatted to other anglers, and seen a peg I fancied, so with the brolly back up, I reduced my output to two rods, and cast out. Within minutes, the bobbins were jumping and a small carp of around 7lb was swiftly netted which was then followed by a string of slab sided bream which couldn’t resist the brand new Pink Pepper Squid baits; not the big carp or catfish I was after, but at least I was seeing some action. The bream moved in over my bait, and it became apparent that not much else was getting a look in. I spotted carp moving in the lilies to the left of my peg, so swapped the lead for a surface controller, and enjoyed myself flicking out a pop up amongst the slurping lips. I missed my first opportunity, the controller causing the fish to bolt and disturb the swim, but I soon got another chance which I almost immediately lost! As I watched the water, I noted a lady approaching a bivvy just up the bank with what appeared to be a food delivery, and as I absentmindedly watched, I saw the angler within step out to receive the visitor. He looked vaguely familiar, so I nosily paid attention. The night before, my Manchester United supporting chum had called me to discuss their failings in the 0-2 derby defeat against my favourite team, the mighty Manchester City, and we had specifically talked about the startling talents of City and England midfielder Phil Foden. I’m a huge fan of The Blues, having watched my first game in 1988 at Maine Road, and followed them through thick and thin (mainly thin) ever since, so I take a very keen interest in what goes

on at City. Unbelievably, not twenty yards away, one of the brightest young footballing talents, City midfield maestro Phil Foden, was standing on the bank! I couldn’t pass up a chance like that, so after waiting a polite amount of time, I slunk around to his peg and (to my shame) pretended to be amazed that it was actually he that I happened upon. He was fishing with his dad, and although I had intruded in his valuable down time, he was an absolute gentleman who posed for the usual selfie and was happy to discuss his World Cup winning exploits and all things City. We even talked fishing for a while before I decided I’d imposed enough and left them to their peace. Don’t get me wrong, I’m far too long in the tooth to get star struck, but it’s not every day you happen to be fishing next to a World Cup winning Premiership footballer! As the day progressed, I caught a steady amount of carp, bream and rudd, and cast the occasional eye over as Phil netted an increasing number of carp and then his dad, also named Phil, wandered over to my peg for a chat too. We spent about thirty minutes in engaging conversation, talking about our families, bullying, travel, football, and ultimately fishing and in truth, I enjoyed it immensely. It’s not often I forget about fishing whilst I’m on the bank, but as a City supporter, it was a real treat to get an ‘up close and personal’ audience with both the player and his family, so I was determined to make the most of it. Eventually, we both agreed it was time to pack up as the rain held off, but as we parted, footballer Phil came back over to show me the

COUNTY SENIOR FOOTBALL with Michael Clarke
The County Senior League season is beginning to draw to a close. There were just nine games this week, with one being the Brian Bradley Memorial Trophy Final. Brian Bradley Memorial Trophy Final We must start with the Brian Bradley Memorial Trophy this week, with the final taking place on Thursday night at the Memorial Ground between Burngreave FC of Division One and Hepworth United of the Premier Division. There was no shock to be had with goals from Thomas Rose and and James Pilkington giving Hepworth a 2-0 victory. Premier Division A brace from Matthew Thornton inspired North Gawber Colliery to a 4-0 home win over Oughtibridge WMSC. The win was enough to take North Gawber back to the top of the league, knowing that a win from their last two games is enough to secure them the title and a league and cup double. Also on Wednesday night goals from Thomas Burns and Tyrone Gunter gave High Green Villa a 2-0 away win over Wombwell Main. High Green finish their season just below mid-table, going into the summer on the back of a nine game unbeaten run. Wombwell quickly bounced back from their loss with a 5-2 home win over League Cup finalists
Grimethorpe Sports on Saturday. Goals from Arnie Grayson (2) and Jacob Mattock gave Stocksbridge Park Steels Reserves a 3-0 away win over South Kirkby Colliery on Saturday afternoon. Division One Houghton Main secured third place with a 3-1 home win over Sheffield Bankers, with goals from Giorgio Williams (2) and Jordan Good. Houghton Main had a superb second half of the season with 10 consecutive victories, a run that stretches back to earlyNovember. On Monday night second placed Ecclesfield Red Rose 1915 ended their season with a hard-fought 3-2 away win over Sheffield Medics. The same night there was a rare goalless draw between Caribbean Sports and Hemsworth Miners Welfare Reserves at the Caribbean Sports Ground. Division Two The last fixture in the Division Two season took place on Saturday between Sheffield Union and New Bohemians. By quirk of the fixture list the two sides only met last week with New Bohemians winning 5-1, but it would be a different story this time as third placed Sheffield Union took some revenge on their opponents with a 3-0 win.
biggest goldfish hybrid I’d seen for a long time, which he held in a Dinsmores net. Cheekily, and not one to miss an opportunity, especially as I administer the Dinsmores social media page, I asked Phil if I could take a quick snap which he obligingly agreed to; I checked that it wouldn’t compromise any sponsorship agreements, and got his permission to use it, so keep an eye out on the Dinsmores page soon! I returned home wet but happy, and very pleased with such an unlikely encounter…. Come on you Blues!

WRAGG FOOTBALL LEAGUE with A Royston
The Sid Butterfield Memorial Trophy The third of the finals was one of the very best between two teams from different divisions, Sheffield Academicals and first division Dinnington Town which was played at Roundwood Pavillion, Parkgate, Rotherham. Both teams played some attractive football in the right spirit of the game, which was well refereed by John Reeves, its a pity that the game had to be decided by a an own goal, giving Accademicals a 1-0 win. The Dinington goalkeeper had an outstanding game bringing off some brilliant saves. On Saturday Royston Oakwood finally managed to pick up their first point of the season when they drew 3-3 with HSBC Bank who are close to the top of the League, Clements 2 and Morris scoring for Bank. The only other game in the Premier Division was between Wickersley Old Village and Carribean Sports, which ended in victory for Wickersley by 4-1.
This win gives Wickersley the Premier Division Title, with 30 points, and in runners up spot it was Handsworth Parramore on 27 points, the Wragg Lge only give two points for a win. WARNE PROUD OF MILLERS AS CHAMPIONSHIP STINT COMES TO AN END
Play-off chasing Middlesbrough triumphed 2-1 at the AESSEAL New York Stadium, with Britt Assombalonga and Jon Obi Mikel on target for the visitors and Michael Smith scoring a late penalty for Rotherham. “I thought we started the game really well,” said Warne. “The first 20 minutes, I thought we were the better side. We didn’t take our chance, really. We had some good play and Smudge didn’t take his chance, he’s just squaffed his shot. “It was probably a microcosm of the season; a bit of play up top and Assombalonga – he’s a great player – a little bit of class and I don’t know if it was a pen. “They went 1-0 up and then we didn’t win the first header and a Champions League winner smashes one in so there’s not too much shame on that. “Overall, I think it was a good performance against an excellent team and I’ve got no complaints.” The Millers boss paid tribute to his side for their endeavour which he was pleased to see maintained throughout the entire campaign. “The spirit from my lads has been amazing,” he continued. “Especially after relegation we could have downed tools and give up because there’s one game left but that wasn’t the case. They’ve trained really well all week and wanted to finish
MCCANN RELISHES UNDERDOG TAG FOR PLAY-OFFS Rovers boss Grant McCann says his side will relish the tag of underdogs as they head into the Sky Bet League One play-offs. McCann’s men finished sixth in the table and will now take on Charlton Athletic in a two-legged semi-final, with one of those sides going on to face Sunderland or Portsmouth in a winner-takesall Wembley showdown. He said: “We’ve been underdogs throughout the season, this group were written off from day one

on a high. They’ve given themselves the best opportunity and at the end Vass (Kyle Vassell) hits the post, the ‘keeper makes a good save off Vass and Semi. I don’t think the lads had much more to give and for that I am hugely proud; I think the fans appreciated it. “The fact that we’ve gone as hard and as long as we could in the game, if we could have nicked a draw I don’t think there could have been any complaints. I’d like to thank the Middlesbrough fans for staying behind and clapping my team on the lap of honour, that’s pretty class. “I spoke to one of their players after the game and he said ‘I can’t believe you’re going down, you’ve been excellent’ but it’s a tough league. “Everyone’s been competitive but the league is so tight. Everything matters and, unfortunately we didn’t have enough this season.” Warne insists his side are definitely not out despite going down and is determined for next season to be a successful one. “We’ll have a couple of down weeks and then we all start building again,” he added. “We’ll be back in before we know it and we’ll be running around Germany before we know it. The season will come out and, hopefully, we can be a formidable side in League One that fans will enjoy watching. “I think, on the whole, the fans have enjoyed watching the lads try and go toe-to-toe with some unbelievable teams. “
PLAYER OF THE YEAR AWARD
Rotherham United forward Michael Smith has landed the Player of the Year award for the 2018/19 season at the End of Season Awards Dinner. The 27-year-old frontman has tirelessly led the line this campaign and received the coveted award on Friday night, sponsored by KCM Waste Management, beating off competition from Semi Ajayi, Will Vaulks, Joe Mattock and Clark Robertson, who also made the shortlist of nominees. Smith ended the 2018/19 campaign having made 45 appearances, netting seven goals in the process, but has been highly-commended for his industrious and unselfish approach to leading the line. Joe Mattock got his hands on the Players’ Player of the Year award for the 2018/19 campaign at Friday night’s End of Season Awards Dinner at AESSEAL New York Stadium. Mattock faced competition from Semi Ajayi, Michael Smith and Will Vaulks in the vote between the squad, but emerged as the winner by one vote after the entries from his peers were tallied to collect the award sponsored by Heineken. The left back has been a consistent and reliable performer for Paul Warne’s side and has been a virtual ever-present in the Millers’ XI this season, starting in all bar one of the club’s Sky Bet Championship fixtures.

Rotherham United defender/midfielder Semi Ajayi has won the 2018/19 Goal of the Season award at the club’s annual End of Season Awards Dinner. The Nigerian international picked up the prestigious award for his wonder-strike against Leeds United at the AESSEAL New York Stadium back in January. Ajayi, who netted eight goals in all competitions this season, has been one of boss Paul Warne’s stand-out performers this season, playing in the heart of the back four, or in a holding midfield role. The former Cardiff-ace was nominated twice after his strike against QPR also made the six-goal shortlist. Rotherham United midfielder Ben Wiles picked up the Young Player of the Year gong at tonight’s End of Season Awards Dinner. Wiles beat off competition from Zak Vyner and Marek Rodak to scoop the coveted award after his breakthrough year in the first-team. Rotherham-born Wiles made his league debut as sub in the Championship opener at Brentford, and has gone from strength-to-strength appearing 22 times in all competitions this season. Midfielder Will Vaulks picked up the Rotherham United Community Player of the Year award for the second consecutive season at tonight’s End of Season Awards Dinner at AESSEAL New York Stadium. Will beat off stiff competition from the likes of Jon Taylor and Richard Wood to win the coveted prize at the club’s gala dinner this evening. Will, who also clinched the EFL Community Player of the Year award this season, is a ambassador for Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice, volunteering once a week at the Anstonbased charity.

WHITEMAN TAKES TOP PRIZE AT END OF SEASON AWARDS Ben Whiteman took home the Player of the Season award at the club’s annual end of season award ceremony on Sunday May 5. As well as the night’s top prize the 22-year old also picked up the award for Players’ Player of the Year making for an impressive season for the midfielder who has been a key figure in Rovers success. Speaking after he won the main award, Whiteman said: “It’s obviously a great achievement to win but, to be honest, the Players’ Player of the Year trophy means more because the lads have voted for it. “Everyone in the team has been outstanding all season from the defence right through to the strikers - everyone deserves credit. Because of all that hard word, we’ve reached the play-offs. It’s a lottery now so hopefully we can do the job and get to Wembley.” It was also a successful evening for Rieves Boocock who was crowned Young Player of the Year. The 18-year-old scored more than 30 goals across all competitions in the 2019/2020 campaign helping the U18s come second in the Youth Alliance League. Boocock capped off a good season by making his Sky Bet League One debut away at Gillingham and came on as a late substitute against Premier League Crystal Palace in the Emirates FA Cup. Mallik Wilks won the Social Media Player of the
Year award – this award was given to the player who had the most combined wins of the postmatch twitter polls. Wilks stormed away with the win ahead of Whiteman and Herbie Kane. The Leeds United loanee has had a fantastic season, tearing the league apart with his power and pace. Wilks showed his skill to score an impressive 16 goals and captain Andy Butler said of the forward: “I wouldn’t want to play against him.” Goal of the Season was voted for in the room with six of the best strikes from across the season shortlisted. Ali Crawford’s free-kick against Rochdale was voted the winning goal picking up 45% of the vote. John Marquis collected his well-deserved Golden Boot Award. Saturday’s goal against Coventry City was his 25th of the season finishing off another exceptional campaign for the striker. It was also his 61st league goal in a Rovers shirt putting him sixth in the overall leading league goal scorers for the club. There was also a Special Achievement Award which was given to the team behind the scenes who worked so hard over the course of the year to win the overall EFL Family Club of the Year Award.

TYPICAL AT THE END OF THE SEASON Steve Bruce reflected on the Owls’ final day defeat against QPR and tagged the game a typical end of season encounter. Wednesday went down by the odd goal in three in a lacklustre game
that lacked the normal blood and thunder of the Championship. And Bruce said: “How many times have we seen these kind of games when there’s nothing to play for? “It was a few steps up
from a friendly at times, it was flat, low key and without any real passion. “We played like that and got what we deserved, which was nothing.” The R’s reverse meant a 12th place finish for the Owls and Bruce says he
will not accept a similar standing next season: “It’s a mediocre finish and not acceptable for a club like Sheffield Wednesday. “The players have been fantastic since I walked through the door, I couldn’t have asked for anything more really.
“These last couple of games have seen a different intensity when it became clear we couldn’t make the playoffs, that’s football. “The way we started at Preston last week and how we played today, that was a side with nothing to play for.
“But go back before then and the performances and results have been superb by and large. “We now look forward, we have a big summer ahead, so let’s see what we can do to give ourselves the best possible chance next season.”

This week Steve Bruce started his restructuring of the Sheffield Wednesday squad in preparation for a promotion push next season. Abdi, Boyd, Hooper, Jones, Matias and Pudil have all gone. With an average age of 32 and an estimated saving of £7 million per year in wage costs alone it seems a no brainer looking from the outside. Hooper is definitely the biggest casualty of the cuts. Arguably one of Wednesday’s best players in recent years, however with 87 appearances in 3 ½ years, injuries and high wages are definitely the major contributors behind him not receiving a new deal. As Bruce has said in recent interviews, he is looking to inject some youth into an aging and
expensive squad, more players will be leaving before the start of next season. Bruce will be looking at the striker situation first as a way to gather funds for new recruits. With Hooper going that still leaves us with 6 strikers to choose from. With only Joao having a contract past the end of next season, it’s more than likely at least 2 will leave before the start of the season. In my opinion Winnall and Nuhiu are certain to moved on. With Bruce possibly having a look at Rhodes before making a decision on whether or not to keep him. A lack of
depth on the wings will need to be addressed as well. With both Boyd and Matias going there is only Reach who is considered and a traditional winger. The key signing to be made first though is Hector on a permanent deal. The player of the season has been a rock in defence. His partnership with Lees was one of the few highlights from this season. He led from the back and has shown willingness to return to club next season. This is going to be a big summer for The Owls if we are going to push on and achieve the same success as our neighbours.

STOKE SCENES WON’T BE FORGOTTEN The Blades boss gives his final Championship reaction, following an away draw in Stoke. Chris Wilder says he will always remember the ‘scenes’ United enjoyed following Sunday’s final game of the season at Stoke City. Reflecting on the celebrations with the near 3,000 travelling supporters at the Bet365 Stadium, Wilder commented: “The scenes here will live with me forever and hopefully they
will for the supporters as well. “This is a special team, a special group of players, who deserves to be talked about, they deserve an enormous amount of credit.” On the game itself, Wilder added: “It was like a game of basketball in the second-half, it epitomised what we’re about. We’d started well, but made a couple of individual errors after that. “How for the life of me the first goal isn’t offside and the major
talking point is the fabulous one-handed save from Ryan Shawcross not long after. “It’s been a difficult week for the players really, to reach the Premier League in the manner they’ve done it and the emotion that goes with it. “It wasn’t easy to back up for another game and we were off it in the first-half, we had words about going out the front door at half-time and a draw was a fair result, without a doubt.”
Dean Henderson thanked his teammates in front of him for 21 clean sheets and the Golden Glove. Sheffield United goalkeeper Dean Henderson has won the Sky Bet Championship Golden Glove award for the 2018/19 season. The 22-year-old stopper finished the season with 21 clean sheets, two ahead of Middlesbrough ‘keeper Darren Randolph. Henderson was
pipped by Randolph for inclusion into the Sky Bet Championship and PFA Championship Teams of the Season, but won promotion with the Blades, after they finished in the second automatic promotion spot. Henderson is on loan from Manchester United and has been instrumental in Chris Wilder’s side’s march to the Premier League. He was voted Sheffield United’s Young Player of the Season and recently
outlined his desire to stay at Bramall Lane next season. Henderson said: “It’s not possible without my teammates, but I’ve worked hard every day on the training pitch, it’s my first season in the Championship so I’m delighted. “I try to do my best every Saturday, Tuesday and that’s what you’ve got to do to become the best goalkeeper. “It’s the best feeling in the world to get promoted, coming out here in front
GOLDEN GLOVE FOR DEANO of our supporters. Getting the job done last week makes it a little bit easier. “We wanted to get a result and win the title but
unfortunately it wasn’t to be, but we had some good teams chasing us down so to come out with promotion is outstanding.”
The Sky Bet Championship Golden Boot was won by Norwich City’s Teemu Pukki who scored 29 goals.
WILDER NAMED MANAGER OF THE MONTH FOR APRIL
Chris Wilder has been named Sky Bet Championship Manager of the Month for April. In a month when promotion back to the Premier League was confirmed, the Blades picked up a total of 14 points from six games, including
wins home wins against Nottingham Forest and Ipswich Town and victories on the road at Preston North End and Hull City. It’s the second time in three months that the Blades boss won the award, following a February that yielded
13 points from a possible 15. Wilder remarked: “I accept this award on behalf of everyone at the club, particularly those who work tirelessly away from the lights to give the players the platform to perform to the levels they
consistently have all season. “At this stage of the season, under the pressure we were under, to remain unbeaten throughout the month and add 14 decisive points to our tally is nothing short of remarkable.” The other nominees were...
