A FUTURE VISION FOR ROTHERHAM LIBRARIES Plans to ensure all Rotherham libraries are based in the heart of local communities are set to be explored. Leaders at Rotherham Council are keen to ensure all libraries are well used, cost effective and responsive to the
changing needs of customers, including using all available technology and resources. As part of their vision the Council wants to ensure the services offered reflect the needs and make up of Rotherham’s communities. They
want libraries to be recognised neighbourhood hubs aimed at improving the quality of life of local residents. They also want them to be used to help inspire Rotherham’s children, young people and their families to enjoy
right locations and offering the right services which are beneficial to those accessing them. Polly Hamilton, Assistant Director for Culture, Sport reading and develop and Tourism said: their knowledge and “Libraries are an skills, giving them incredible resource the opportunity to and we want people realise their full to get the best use out potential. of them. Perhaps they are in the wrong location, they are not accessible or people simply aren’t aware of the great opportunities on offer. Only once we have a clear picture of how people view our libraries can we make plans about how to deliver services in the best
way possible.” The Council’s Cabinet is expected to agree a recommendation for a public consultation, so people’s views can be captured. A further report based on what people say will go back to Cabinet at a later date with plans for a further consultation following any plans for changes. The Council has also just consulted
about the location of its current central library, which at the moment is in the ground floor of the authority’s headquarters at Riverside House. The Council wants to move this to a more central location near the markets. A further report on this is expected to be heard in the near future.

PROMOTION PARADE CLEAN-UP ACKNOWLEDGED Following Sheffield United’s triumphant Premier League promotion celebration last Tuesday, which saw 15,000 fans gather in
the city centre, Council Leader Julie Dore has given personal thanks to the teams working behind the scenes to clean-up after the party.
Once the fans had dispersed, AMEY’s street cleaning team swooped in and worked in to the night to bring Sheffield back to
business as usual. As part of their duties under the Streets Ahead highways maintenance contract, Amey workers responded swiftly to the aftermath of the event, returning the city to its former state. In a letter to Amey’s street cleaning team today, the Council Leader commended those who had ‘worked relentlessly behind the scenes’ and expressed her appreciation for the clean-up operation which enabled us ‘all to enjoy a clean and tidy city centre once again’.
Cllr Dore went on to say how these high standards of service demonstrate the city’s ability to continue hosting these important and memorable events for the people of Sheffield. Eleven operatives were tasked with cleaning up the area surrounding the event and continued into the early hours until 6am, preparing the streets for the Wednesday morning commuters. Street cleaning is undertaken across Sheffield by Amey on a continuous basis to help keep the city as litterfree as possible.

Wedding Guide
SIMPLE HACKS TO MAKE YOUR WEDDING DAY GO WITHOUT A HITCH People meet their spouses from all walks of life. Whether you met him or her in a bar, at work or on dating site in uk, there is someone out there for everyone and everyone wants to make their wedding day unforgettable. Here are some life hacks and tips that you can do to ensure that you have the perfect day. Make contacting you easy Setting up a specific wedding email keeps everything wedding related in one place. It can be super easy to miss things if they go into your everyday email so something event specific will do the job nicely for staying organised and on top of things. Lists, Lists, Lists - Stay Organised It sounds so super obvious but lists are your best friend. Lists of suppliers, lists of guests, maybe even lists of lists. These are so handy in knowing what is sorted and what still needs to be ticked off. Before even setting a date, make a list of your available days and cross check them with the places you want to get married - you want to make sure your venue is definitely free or that there won’t be a massive event occurring elsewhere in town on the same day that may interfere with your plans. Another idea of keeping
organised is to make a numbered list and send out invites and response cards with numbers on - then you can simply check them off the list and this will make creating your table plan so much easier.
Take Advantage of Shows Wedding shows are so common and everyone there is vying for your business. To make sure your wedding day goes without a hitch, you’ll want the best quality vendors for everything. Heading to these shows gives you the opportunity to meet a few different people who offer each service so you get a variety of choice before making your final decision. They may even offer discounts or extras if you choose to go with them after meeting them at a show. Rehearse If you want the best day of your life to actually be the best, to be perfect, you may want to rehearse the finer details. Rehearsing what the wedding party need to do and when will hopefully ensure no mishaps on the day. This means you can also find out if the venue is okay with everything you have planned - some venues don’t allow specific types of confetti to be thrown whereas others do it’s all about finding out what you can and can’t do and what
you need to do or not do.
Be Prepared We don’t ever want to think that something may go wrong but it is so important to be prepared for that eventuality. Choosing a person that you can go to for everything is great for on the day so you don’t have to stress about it let your bridesmaid, best man or family member deal with any problems if they should arise. Also make sure you have a little kit at hand too - should you need to touch up your make up, your hair, need to change your heels for flats or stick a plaster on your foot, you’ll have everything at your disposal carried by one of your wedding party. Make Sure You Don’t Miss a Thing It can be so easy to miss things happening at your wedding as you are so caught up in everything. Your photographer may be taking photos of you and your new spouse but you may be missing seeing what others are getting up to. Everyone takes photos at weddings but with so many guests, it can be a struggle to see them all. Getting guests to use a pre-arranged hashtag on social media makes it so much easier - you can find all of the nonprofessional photographs
in one place and go through them at your leisure.
Take Some Time Finally and perhaps the most important life hack of all take some time, time away from the hustle and bustle of the wedding to spend with your new spouse. Whether it is five minutes outside the venue or sitting in the car before the reception, make sure you get some alone time together to appreciate the enormity of what you have just done together and what your life is going to be like from now on. It is expected to make your way around the guests, mingling and thanking them for coming - and it can lead to you barely seeing your new spouse except for the food and speeches part. By taking this small amount of time together, you’ll head back into the day with a fresh, clear and happy mind, ready to get chatting away to your friends and distant family once again.

ARE YOU ENTITLED TO PENSION CREDIT? Government figures suggest two in every five people who are eligible for Pension Credit are not claiming it. This suggests that at least 1.3 million UK pensioners might not be receiving the benefits they are entitled to. Pension Credit is a weekly benefit that helps ensure people of State Pension age and over have sufficient money to live on. Independent Age has launched a free advice guide that provides practical information on what Pension Credit is, who is eligible, how much you could receive, how to claim it and the additional help you could get by claiming it. The reasons why people don’t take up benefits include a lack of awareness of the benefit, lack of awareness of entitlement, and the stigma of receiving a benefit. Independent Age is urging people to apply for Pension Credit or Attendance Allowance, as they may be eligible even if they don’t think they are. Although it is means tested, you may still qualify for it even if you have savings or own your home. The charity is also encouraging people to apply for Pension Credit even if they will only receive a few extra pounds a week, as there are many extra entitlements that come with claiming it. These include free NHS dental treatment and check-ups, free sight tests, vouchers for glasses and contact lenses, help with travel costs to and from hospital and Cold Weather Payments. Attendance Allowance can provide older people with a disability or long-term health condition with additional weekly income. Three in four Attendance Allowance applications are accepted on the first time of applying, so it is well worth considering. Graham, 81, told Independent Age, ‘‘I am a full-time carer for my wife who is paralysed down her right-hand side. I gave up my work in marketing to look after her and bring up our three children, because of a lack of other support. Now, as pensioners, Guarantee Pension Credit is a lifeline to us and tops up our State Pensions. We don’t have any private pensions and couldn’t manage without it. I feel strongly that people should find out if they are entitled to it. Some people might think of it as charity but it’s not. It’s a vital part of our State Pension system. I would urge everyone to see if they are entitled to Guarantee Pension Credit. It brings other excellent benefits with it, such as free dental treatment, vouchers for glasses, the Cold Weather Payment, Council Tax Support and full Housing Benefit. Just claiming it can open all these doors.’’ Lucy Harmer, Director of Services at Independent Age, says, ”There are many reasons why people don’t seek financial help during retirement, but it shouldn’t be something to be ashamed of. With pensioner poverty currently affecting more than a million older people, claiming Pension Credit can help to alleviate financial The charity is also highlighting that Pension Credit is changing for mixed-age couples on the 15th May 2019. Those in a relationship where one partner is over State Pension age should check to see if they qualify for Pension Credit now, so they don’t miss out on extra money. The Pension Credit, Attendance Allowance and Council Tax guides are free to order and download from www. independentage.org/i or can be ordered for
free by calling 0800 319 6789. Independent Age has an online benefits calculator so older people can check their eligibility. Those who would prefer to speak to someone or require additional support can call the Independent Age Helpline on 0800 319 6789 to arrange to speak to a specialist adviser. Lucy gives her expert advice on how to boost your bank balance in later life. 1. Claim State Pension You must claim your State Pension as you won’t receive it automatically. Start by checking your State Pension age using the calculator (https://www.gov.uk/state-pension-age). You should be contacted about claiming around four months before you reach State Pension age. If you reached State Pension age before 6 April 2016, the full basic State Pension rate is £129.20 a week. If you reached State Pension age after this, the full rate is £168.60. 2. Get a benefits check Make sure you are claiming all the benefits you are entitled to. Try our free online benefits calculator (independentage.org/benefitcalculator) to check you are receiving the benefits you are entitled or arrange a benefits check by calling the Independent Age Helpline for free on 0800 319 6789. 3. Check if you can receive Pension Credit Pension Credit can top up your income if you’ve reached State Pension age. Although it is means tested, you may still qualify for it if you have savings or own your home. It’s worth applying even if you think you would only get a couple of pounds extra a week. Pension Credit brings additional bonuses including free NHS dental treatment, free sight tests, vouchers for glasses and contact lenses, help with travel costs to and from hospital and Cold Weather Payments. 4.Find out about Attendance Allowance You may be eligible for Attendance Allowance if you are over State Pension age and: • have a long term physical or mental illness or disability • have needed help with personal care or supervision to keep you safe for 6 months or more Three in four applications are accepted first time. It isn’t means tested so you can claim it whatever your income or savings. 5. See if you can get a Council Tax discount Read our Council Tax guide to find out if you are eligible for a reduction, rebate or Council Tax Support. If you aren’t eligible for any discounts, you might want to contact your local authority to spread Council Tax payments over 12 months instead of the normal 10 months. 6. Check you are on the best deal for your insurance and utilities Changing your insurance policies, utility companies, telephone, broadband providers and energy tariff could save you some money. You can call up companies to get quotes or use a price comparison website such as uSwitch (0800 688 8557, uswitch.com). 7. Consider switching your bank account Consider changing your bank account if you are no longer happy with the services they offer. Also, if your local branch has closed and you don’t use online banking, you could change to a different bank with a branch nearby. Switching bank accounts is easy as your new bank will do all the work for you. You can compare current accounts using a price comparison website or by contacting the banks directly.
8. Trace lost money • Pensions – contact the Pension Tracing Service (0800 731 0193) to find old personal or workplace pensions. • Bank or building society accounts – use the free My Lost Account (https:// www.mylostaccount.org.uk/) service to find forgotten accounts. Alternatively call UK Finance about bank accounts (02039340329) or the Building Societies Association (020 7520 5900). • Insurance policies – contact your insurance company directly. The Association of British Insurers (020 7600 3333) can find your insurer’s contact details. 9. Discounts for over 60s Many places offer discounts if you’re 60 or over, including various museums, cinemas, theatres and shops. It’s always worth asking as they may not advertise the discount. If you enjoy cinema and receive disability benefits or are registered as blind or severely sight-impaired, apply for a CEA card. This entitles you to one free ticket for someone to accompany you every time you go to a participating cinema. Apply for it at https://www. ceacard.co.uk/ or call 01244 526 016. 10. Get free, impartial advice Independent Age produces free, awardwinning guides and factsheets full of information to help you boost your income, find the care you need, choose the right place to live, stay connected with others, and more. Order our guides and factsheets at www.independentage.org/ or contact our Helpline on 0800 319 6789.
IT’S MENTAL HEALTH AWARENESS WEEK! It’s Mental Health Awareness Week – a UK-wide initiative to help raise awareness about a range of mental health issues. While it was once considered a taboo topic of conversation, today more and more people are being open about their struggles with mental health, making it easier for people to recognise and seek help when they need it. Good mental health is about more than just the absence of a mental health problem. While modern medicine has made incredible strides to improve the health of our bodies and increase our life expectancy, we also need to prioritise good health for our minds.Looking after your mental health doesn’t need to cost a fortune or take too much time. Here’s some practical steps you can take to promote good mental health in your life. 1. Talk about your feelings Sharing your feelings with others can help you stay in good mental health and navigate difficult times. Don’t be afraid to open up to your friends and family. 2. Eat well and stay active Looking after your body also has a positive effect on your mind. Eating well, getting enough sleep and staying active can all promote a strong, resilient mind. 3.Drink sensibly. We often rely on alcohol to change our moods. If you drink to deal with fear, stress or loneliness it can make you feel worse in the long run. Alcohol can also leave you feeling low and depressed as the effects wear off. 4. Accept yourself Accepting yourself and feeling good about who you are can give you the confidence to learn new

More than a million people flocked to Fargate in Sheffield in March and the following month the city recorded its highest footfall for three years – despite declining national figures. Figures released by Springboard show that footfall is up by 12.6 per cent compared to last year, with Fargate (9.4 per cent) and Division Street (8 per cent) enjoying more visitors than in previous years. 1,052,345 people visited Fargate in March and 453,754 were counted in Division Street for the similar period. It’s only the fourth time since April 2017 that numbers have broken the magic million. April’s combined footfall for the city centre is the highest since April 2016 and shows people are returning in even greater numbers to enjoy a range of city events such as the World Snooker Championships and the Sheffield Half Marathon. Classical Sheffield, the Global Village Market, Easter Fairground the Sheffield Starflyer and Big Wheel have also helped attract more visits to the city centre, as well as the opening of improved public spaces in the new Heart Of The City II scheme. Unseasonably warm weather, compared with last year’s Beast From The East, may also have led to increases. But with several other major events on the horizon including Sheffield Doc/Fest, the Invictus Games and Sheffield Food Festival, insiders are predicting one of the highest figures on record for Sheffield. Councillor Mazher Iqbal, cabinet member for business and investment at Sheffield City Council, said: “This is great news for Sheffield. We have big plans to improve Fargate and Division Street, and judging by these numbers, people are already needing no encouragement to work, shop and live here. “I believe the city centre continues to look better and better. All the new developments such as the new Heart Of The City scheme, the opening of Charter Square and Kommune, together with the fantastic events we have week on week in Sheffield shows the city centre is bouncing back.” “This can only help attract even more investors and jobs to the city centre” Footfall in Fargate and Division Street is independently counted by Springboard using state-of-the-art cameras and data assessment tools. They are an international company who specialise in footfall and other analytics for city centres and shopping centres.

THE COUNTDOWN IS ON FOR ROD! Now that the football season has come to a successful end, Bramall Lane turns its attention to the Rod Stewart concert as he heads to Sheffield in June as part of his 2019 UK summer tour. Due to the huge demand for the previously announced shows, Rod will now play an extra two outdoor shows plus two arena dates in support of the release of his 30th studio album Blood Red Roses which debuted at number one. And the tour includes a stop at Bramall Lane Stadium on Saturday 15th June. His Sheffield show marks the first time there has been a concert at the football club since Bruce Springsteen played two nights at the venue back in 1988. United Operations Director Dave McCarthy said: "Rod Stewart is one of the world's bestknown and best-loved performers. "We are delighted he has chosen our Bramall Lane stadium and it is further recognition that we have a stadium capable of staging or being associated with high-profile events. "We look forward to welcoming music fans, not only from Sheffield, South Yorkshire and the North Midlands, but fans of Rod from all over the country, as big scale concerts make a welcome return to our stadium.
"This concert will be one of the unmissable events of the summer."
Tickets are still available and are on sale now from www.ticketmaster.co.uk/rodstewart-live-in-concert-sheffield-15-06-2019/ event/3500556EE8E76BE6 The fully seated tour is being promoted by Cuffe and Taylor whose director Peter Taylor said: "We are delighted to be adding the Sheffield date to Rod Stewart Live In Concert. We have presented numerous shows with him over the past five years and this will be our second full tour with him. Rod's 2019 shows promise to be filled with both classics and new hits in his dazzling signature style. As one of the best-selling artists in the history of recorded music, with more than 200 million records sold worldwide, his performance will include show stopping classics from his glittering career as well as new album Blood Red Roses - a deeply personal 13-track collection of originals and three covers. A limited number of hospitality opportunities will also be available for the event, for package details visit www.sufc.co.uk/rodstewarthospitality

ANGLER’S CORNER
that I still have much to learn (doesn’t every angler) last week saw me make some changes. I’d turned up at my ‘banker’ water with Clint Walker hoping to catch a few carp for the requisite I’m fairly long in the tooth when it comes social media images and settled into a comfy to angling, I’ve been fishing for almost peg near the car park. I’d three or four tried and tested rigs which nailed the wafter down with a pinched on rarely let me down. I have a bottom bait rig, Grippa Styx (Dinsmores) which meant it was a couple of pop up tactics and a wafter rig, pinned within two inches of the lake bed and and that does me for most situations. COUNTY SENIOR FOOTBALL with Michael Clarke
The County Senior League is beginning to wind down for the Summer with only three games taking place this week, however there was time to crown a new Premier Division champion. Premier Division Top of the North Gawber Colliery travelled to Wombwell Main on Wednesday night knowing a victory would win them the title. North Gawber knew it would not be easy against Wombwell, who sit just above mid-table in seventh position. In the end a 10 man North Gawber got the three points they needed with a 2-1 victory, with goals

my compatriots had caught, then returned to tell me that George had just had his first fish, and Derek had caught four. Aside from two lost fish which I suspect were foul hooked, I hadn’t had a thing! I know my rig works here, I’ve had countless carp on it, but today, it just wasn’t right, so I considered a few tweaks to see if it changed anything. The first thing was to change the length of the hooklink, but that solved nothing, so I changed the lead which was also pointless, then the size of the hook…again to no avail. Finally, I decided to see if the carp wanted the bait a little higher off the bottom, so removed the Grippa Styx to allow a full four inches of movement off the lake bed. It was a change which made only a couple of inches of difference, but what a difference! Within the next hour, a couple of decent carp tripped up over the bait, I lost a further fish, then for the remaining few hours, action was steady with a fish banked every thirty minutes or so. By the end of the day, I’d had at least seven carp well into double figures and a couple of slabby bream, so retired happily to the van. George had packed up early after his solitary specimen, Derek’s struggles had continued with no bites at all for the last two hours of his visit, but I’d finally unlocked the correct method with a minor adjustment. It’s probably worth mentioning that I have no idea why the change worked, (perhaps a covering of leaf debris masking the bait?) or whether the fish would have ‘come

on’ anyway but work it did on what was obviously a tough day. Now I have to question whether I think these ‘experts’ are still just camping carpers who seek to sell additional products, or if there is some merit in making minor changes, or whether I just got lucky. I guess that is the reason we keep going back though isn’t it? You just never know and sometimes, it gets you thinking a bit too… now, where is that size 11 swivel, hook bead, and stripped back super combistrip link? I have tweaks to make…

WE ARE RIGHT BACK IN THE TIE Grant McCann praised Rovers’ second-half performance as Matty Blair’s effort kept his side in with a chance of reaching Wembley. Blair’s late header came after Charlton had opened up a 2-0 lead in the first leg of the Sky Bet League One play-off semi-final, but McCann believes the tie is still wide open going into Friday’s second leg. “I’m pleased for Matty, it was a good header at the back post and Mallik’s done well with the cross - we’re right in this tie now and we know what we’ve got to do at The Valley on Friday,” he said. “I thought in the second half we were outstanding, we camped in their half and we passed and we probed. Maybe we lacked a cutting edge at times, but we played our game and I felt we could or should have had a couple more goals.
McCann said his players will not be intimidated by the prospect of needing a win in south-east London. “I don’t think any game in this league should be daunting, especially in the play-offs. Charlton are 2-1 up and it’s half-time in the tie: ut will be a good game on Friday,” he added. “We know what we have to do. We’ve got ourselves back in the tie and now we have to go there and get ourselves back on a level playing field before we can push on. “It’s going to be difficult, but we have to approach Friday’s game with the same mindset that we had during the second half on Sunday. Charlton are a good side, but we’ve shown for long periods of that game, and our most recent league game that we can match them.” Get behind Rovers as they travel to Charlton Athletic on Friday May 17 - tickets are available from the Club Doncaster Box Office and can be purchased online any time until Thursday. BLAIR SAYS CONFIDENCE IS STILL HIGH
to put things right and score more goals. “I think if we play like we did in the second half here and add to that with more energy, a little bit more quality that we know we have got within this squad, we can give them a really good game down there.” Rovers now travel to the capital on Friday evening as they look to overturn a 2-1 deficit at The Valley against the Addicks who finished third in the regular season, and Blair feels their experiences from the defeat could work to their Matty Blair says the confidence within the advantage in the return leg. camp is still high despite defeat in the first leg of the Sky Bet League One play-off semi- “They’re a very good unit, a very good outfit across the pitch, they didn’t finish where they final against Charlton Athletic on Sunday. did in the league for no reason, we knew that The Addicks scored twice in two minutes to take the lead in the tie, before Blair’s late goal coming into the game that they were good on the ball and their quality was good going gave Rovers a lifeline, with the right-back forward,” he added. bundling the ball in at the back post, and he “I think we managed them a lot more in the believes there is still a long way to go in the second half and we pushed them back as much quest for a place at Wembley Stadium. as we possibly could, obviously we managed “That goal could help us a lot, I wouldn’t say it’s got us back into it because we felt we were to score a goal to make it a decent tie next in the tie anyway, we knew we’d have another Friday now, we knew we had one game left at The Valley and we’ll give it a right good go. 90 minutes still to play, but it certainly has “To get into the play-offs is one thing, but helped us out,” he said. “I’m happy to get the goal of course, it got the we’re not just here to make up the numbers, we are a very good squad and I think we can beat fans up for it again and created a great atmoanyone on our day, we’ll go there now with sphere in the last few minutes, I felt we could snatch a second late on, we have another game that belief we can do something special.”
WILDER APPRECIATIVE OF SUPPORT Chris Wilder says his relationship with Stephen Bettis has been instrumental to United’s continued success, on and off the field. The pair were reunited last summer, with Bettis returning to the club on a permanent basis, following some time away due to his own business commitments following promotion from League One. But Wilder, who has always spoken of his admiration for the Blades CEO, believes the return of Bettis has aided United’s march to the Premier League. The manager remarked: “We talk about relationships between football people, I’m not saying Steve isn’t a football person and our relationship is a strong one, it’s a respectful one and if that breaks down football club can be in trouble. “Thankfully for me personally, my relationship with Steve has culminated in a decent amount of success in the last three years.” Bettis continued: “Chris touched on it, but it’s the budgets for players that are the biggest at the club and it’s crucial we’re getting them right. “Working together we have a great relationship. We’ve done some fantastic business during the transfer windows and we’ve managed to create assets for the club, all of which can play in the
Premier League next season. “In respect of both owners they’ve not let their differences affect the day-to-day running of the football club and I’ve made sure the club has run well with their support, we’ve had the success to prove it.” Wilder concluded: “The job of winning football matches is hard enough, but it’s also about the bigger picture and running the club properly, if you are looking at the football world there are so many clubs who have put their futures in trouble. “It’s huge that there is stability and a pragmatic approach and that’s certainly happened here, we’ve gone about things the right way, we’ve maximised our budget, brought in assets and moved players when we’ve had to. “We look through the group and it is young and vibrant, full of assets and we want to add to those in the Premier League. “The relationship I’ve got with Steve allows me to do my job in and around the football club to the best of my ability. “We’ve got a bright future, but it’s a sensible one, it’s not a boom or bust scenario.”
AKEEM LANDS NEW DEAL
Akeem added: “There are some great people here for me to learn from. The likes of Richard Wood, Will Vaulks and Semi Ajayi to name a few are first class professionals who set the right examples at first-team level. I enjoyed learning from them last season, and training with them on a regular basis has given me a good idea of where I need to be. “In my position, Joe Mattock is someone who is also a great role model. He’s always giving me sound advice on the training field, and I’m lucky to be able to work with someone who has consistently set high standards over a long period of time.” He continued: “I think now it is up to me to make sure I come back for the start of pre-season in good shape. I then need to impress the staff and we’ll see what happens from there. Pre-season is the most important time for me now, it is a chance to put a platform together to work from, that’ll be my main focus because a good pre-season can set you up for the following months of the campaign.” Meanwhile, the club can confirm discussions are continuing with other first-team players with a retained list due to be released before Friday this week.
Rotherham United defender Akeem Hinds has signed a new one-year deal with the club. The young defender experienced his first full year as a professional last term, and is looking to continue his development into his second year as a pro with the club. He told www.themillers.co.uk: “I think as the season has gone on, you can see the gaffer and the first-team staff have looked to give some of the younger lads a chance. Ben Wiles and his journey so far is a great example for me, so this is a great place to be at the moment as I look to kick on in the early stages of my career. I think I have a great opportunity now to work hard, and show that I am capable of getting into the first-team.” The full-back also had the opportunity of training with the first-team on a weekly basis, and he says the step up has given him the opportunity to learn from a host of senior players, including Joe Mattock, who has passed on some valuable information on playing in the left-back role.

YOUNGSTERS BANNAN EXPECTS TOUGH SHOWING THE WAY PRE-SEASON SWFC FAN COLUMN BY CHRIS PLATTS
Owls midfielder Barry Bannan is expecting a tough pre-season under Steve Bruce ahead of Wednesday’s 2019/20 Championship campaign. The Scotsman believes fitness is the key to finishing high in the league and expects an emphasis on straight running and improved levels of fitness once the squad return for duty following the summer break. Bannan said: “All pre-seasons are tough. “But the manager brings an intensity into training throughout the season, so there’s no doubt pre-season will be tough. “You need to be fit to do well in this league. You need to be really fit, and you can see that with the clubs that have finished near the top. “They’ve got a real work ethic and they just run all over teams. “That’s something we want to work on in the summer to make sure we are ready for the beginning of next season.”

After a year of frustration for Wednesday fans, the one shining light that has come out of the season is the progression of the youngsters. Dawson and Wildsmith have shown they are more than capable stepping into Westwood’s boots when he’s not been available/selected. Penney and Thorniley have also shown they are ready to start pushing for first team honours with solid performances throughout the season. With Kirby, Baker, Hunt and Stobbs all making appearances for the first team this season, it’s been a great season for academy players making breakthroughs into the first team. What is even more encouraging is how well the under-18’s has done this season. Winning both the regional and national titles. Managed by Andy Holdsworth, The Owls youngsters have shown great determination throughout the season to succeed in capturing the Premier Developmental League 2 title, beating Cardiff in the final. Players to look out for in the future are Isaac Rice, captain of the team and solid centre half. Liam Waldock, a hard-working centre midfielder who can operate in deeper and advanced roles. Josh Dawodu, a skilful defender who’s at ease in defence and going forward. Elliott Vasalo, a talented striker who scored the winning goal in the final against Cardiff. All of these players will be looking to push on to greater success with the under23’s side and hopefully one day with the first team. All in all, the future looks bright for Wednesday with a flurry of talented players looking to push on into the first team.
