WORK BEGINS ON £5.8 MILLION GREY TO GREEN PROJECT Hotels, businesses and residents in Sheffield’s historic Castlegate will soon enjoy a transformed outlook and setting – as Phase 2 of the acclaimed ‘Grey To Green’ scheme gets under way. The scheme will also link Castlegate to the under-used Victoria Quays area and transform the almost redundant former inner ring road with sustainable drainage, floral meadows, segregated cycle lanes and public art. It will also significantly improve the approach to the Castle House Kollider/Kommune on Snig Hill. Contractors begin work this week after £5.8m funding was confirmed from the European
Regional Development Fund, £2.8m of which is Sheffield City Region Local Growth Funding, as well as contributions from Sheffield City Council and Canal and Rivers Trust. The scheme will provide better links to the many hotels in Castlegate and improve bus, pedestrian and cycling access from the north east to the city centre and also towards Kelham. Redundant carriageways from Park Square to Blonk Street will be reclaimed to provide quality areas for pedestrians and two-way cycle facilities with a new 20mph speed limit in place. Castlegate itself will be closed to vehicles, Blonk Street will become two-way with a 24-hour bus gate
in the direction of The Wicker and there will be enhanced public spaces with perennial meadow planting, tree planting, quality materials and public art. Fifty-seven new trees will be planted as part of the scheme. The project will encourage new economic activity into the area, promote walking and cycling, speed up bus journeys and improve resilience to climate change flooding. Grey to Green Phase has already won a wheelbarrow of awards for its green environment and world-leading sustainable drainage in the West Bar area. The works of the second phase that start today will extend to the top
of Snig Hill in the new phase of works and they are set to be completed by March 2020. Cabinet member Mazher Iqbal said: “The first phase of Grey To Green has justifiably won awards and attracted interest from cities around the world. It is a beautiful corridor of colour which looks good year round. I’m thrilled this success story will now extend into the city’s ancient and historic heart and provide better connectivity to the canal basin and Castlegate itself. By working in partnership we are delivering another world-class scheme which will make this part of the city vibrant once again.” Dan Jarvis, Mayor of the
Sheffield City Region, said: “Work on the second phase of the Grey to Green project comes at an exciting time for our region. We’re committed to supporting people to travel in a more active way, which brings benefits such as improving people’s health, reducing congestion and improving air quality. Creating greener public People don’t simply need encouragement to travel actively; they need the infrastructure that makes it possible. That’s why I’m pleased that Local Growth Funding, distributed through the Sheffield City Region, has supported this project.

DOCFEST 2019 ANNOUNCES FULL LINE-UP
ALBERT SNODGRASS
This morning I used Red Bull instead of water to make my coffee. After 15 minutes of driving I realised that I’d left my car at home! I asked my wife to act like a “naughty school girl”. She forged a note from her mother saying she didn’t have to participate. A bunch of scumbags stole 20 crates of Red Bull from my local supermarket yesterday. I don’t know how they sleep at night. Me to mate, “My wife keeps pestering me to dress up as an Alice in Wonderland character!” Mate “Are you mad at her?” “Don’t you start!” Just tried changing my password to “14Days” but it was two week. Just managed to burn 1500 calories in 30 minutes! The pizza’s ruined though.

1320 29/05/2019 CARERS MISSING LIBRARIES - NOT JUST ABOUT BOOKS! OUT ON CREDITS Carers could lose about £5,000 in pension income by failing to claim benefits. Thousands of grandparents caring for children in Britain are missing out on valuable pension credits, according to new figures. If a mother or father goes back to work after the birth of a child and a grandparent or other family member looks after the child, they can receive national insurance credits under a government scheme. Added to the NI record of the grandparent — if they are still under state pension age — these credits can help them build up a full state pension. More than 10,000 grandparents and other family members received help with their state pension in 2017-18 after caring for children under the age of 12, according to figures obtained under a Freedom of Information Act by Royal London, the insurer. This represents a sevenfold increase on two years ago, but a fraction of the number who could benefit. They estimated that about 1million grandparents were potentially eligible for the additional pension credits but said a widespread lack of awareness led thousands of people to miss out on the extra financial benefits available. “While it is great news that thousands more grandparents are now benefiting from this scheme, the numbers are still a drop in the ocean out of all those who could benefit,” said Sir Steve Webb, of Royal London. “It is increasingly common for grandparents to spend some time each week looking after their grandchildren, often to enable a parent to go out to work. It would be quite wrong if these grandparents suffered financially in terms of their own state pension as a result.” In 2015-16, Royal London revealed that just 1,298 grandparents and other family members were benefiting from the scheme, under which credits can be backdated to April 6 2011. Following a burst of publicity, the number claiming rose to 10,084 by 2017-18, according to the new FOI response. In the absence of official figures, the numbers of people missing out are an estimate. However, research by charity Grandparents Plus found that about two-thirds of all grandparents reported they spent time looking after grandchildren. Sir Steve said: “Given that there are more than 7m grandparents in Britain with grandchildren under 16, it is hard to believe that the 10,084 who claim NI credits is more than a small fraction of those who are entitled.” The additional national insurance credits can be of considerable value to someone who would not otherwise build up a full state pension. Each annual credit missed could cost someone 1/35 of the value of the state pension — around £250 a year or £5,000 over the course of a typical 20year retirement. Lucy Peake, chief executive of Grandparents Plus, said “Around half of kinship carers drop out of the labour market to care for children — often women, and often for the second time. Without entitlement to a financial allowance to cover the costs of raising a child, they are plunged into poverty and very worried about their financial future.”

PIONEERING FOOD TECHNOLOGY IN CITY
CELEBRATE 100 YEARS OF COUNCIL HOUSING
Ceaseless world population growth and worrying levels of soil erosion mean new ways of producing food perhaps matches mitigating climate change as the biggest global challenge of our time. Some 24 billion tons of fertile soil are being lost globally to erosion every year and such is the mounting crisis that academics at the University of Sheffield predict the UK has fewer than 100 harvests left. Enter hydroponics, the science of growing plants using nutrient solutions in a controlled unit without using soil. An attempt to harness the potential of hydroponics is underway on the border of Sheffield and Rotherham, where a team of scientists are using a disused building at the former Tinsley Infant School to grow a range of fresh produce, from salad to tomatoes, using specialist foams that chemically, physically and biologically resemble soil. Such has been the success of the so-called “urban farm” project to date that scientists have found that they can grow plants up to 10 times faster than in soil. Project leader Jacob Nickles explained how the system worked. “This technology is the way forward,” Mr Nickles said. “By 2050, we are facing having to feed 10bn people worldwide and we don’t have the space or resources to do so. Both hydroponics - and aquaponics to raise fish - solve a number of issues in one go.
This summer we are celebrating a landmark event that saw large scale council estates spring up across Sheffield – and the Council want your help to bring our housing history to life. The 1919 Addison Act enabled local authorities to develop new housing for working people. It followed a speech by Prime Minister Lloyd George as British troops returned from The Great War, calling for ‘a country fit for heroes to live in’. The aim was to produce high quality, well-proportioned housing, with gardens where possible, a very big change from working class housing at the time. In Sheffield new housing quickly got underway on the Norwood estate, followed by the estates at Walkley, Woodhouse, Handsworth, Wadsley, Brushes, Stubbin and the Manor. We’d like to know whether our residents can remember their relatives talking about life in their new council home or watching new estates being built? They are looking for photos of these properties – it could be Firth Park council homes in the 50s, Stocksbridge in the 60s or Southey in the 70s.They want residents to share their photos and memories to use as part of these celebrations. Photos can either be dropped off in a neighbourhood office or at Sheffield Town Hall reception where a member of staff can scan them in and take

Emmaus Sheffield is the drug and alcohol free project that provides a home, support and work for previously homeless people at its base close to the Canal Basin. And Emmaus companions Gary Simmonds and John Nichols have now qualified to carry out PAT Testing, which means electrical items on sale at the charity’s popular second hand store are properly working and fit for purpose. Also qualifying as a PAT tester was Emmaus staff member Kate Morgan, while companion Aidan Colliver was successful with his Domestic Appliance Engineer course. “PAT Testing is a legal requirement and one that has to be carried out by a properly qualified person,” said Emmaus Community Manager Charley Fedorenko. “Training to carry out this service fits in perfectly with the Emmaus philosophy of providing our Com-

the big gig to launch invictus trials in sheffield Headlined by Alfie Boe, The Big Gig will take place on Monday 22 July at Sheffield FLY DSA Arena. Other major acts announced are classical artist Laura Wright, pop-sensation Heather Small, Suggs from Madness and Game of Thrones actor Charles Dance. The Big Gig is produced and presented by Sheffield’s Grammy award-winning songwriter and producer Eliot Kennedy, and designer Emma Willis, founder of the charity Style for Soldiers. Eliot Kennedy said: “This is going to be epic – as fans know, as with all my charity gigs, you never know who could turn up. There’s inevitably a major surprise artist that will make the night even more special. I can’t wait to sing proudly with some of the biggest voices out there for the inspiring Invictus UK Trials.” Alfie Boe is one of Britain’s best-loved performers. The powerhouse voice with Platinum album sales has conquered the world’s most prestigious opera stages and theatres, and stole the show at the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Concert at Buckingham Palace. Charles Dance, the legendary British actor who has gained a huge young following playing Lord Lannister in Game of Thrones as well as Martin Benson in ITV’ s current The Widow, will be galloping into Sheffield to perform at the Big Gig. Heather Small became one of the seminal voices of the ‘90s with massive worldwide success as part of M People. The
title track of her solo album, Proud, became the soundtrack to major sporting and charitable events, such as England’s victory at the Rugby World Cup. English soprano and classical-popular crossover singer, Laura Wright is a Royal favourite – she has performed for the Queen at her Majesty’s 90th birthday celebrations and at numerous sporting events. Lead singer of Madness, Suggs, arrives in Sheffield in May with The Madness Musical at City Hall as part of their UK tour and joins July’s Big Gig line-up in support of our wounded veterans and service personnel. Emma Willis MBE, founder of Style for Soldiers, whose exhibition Art in the Aftermath shows injured service personnel’s painting, poetry, film and sculpture over the Trials week, said: “It’s a show-stopping line-up of singers and actors who all powerfully evoke the emotions Invictus represents and the courage, ability and passion of our servicemen and women. I’m proud to be working with Eliot to help produce a celebratory concert worthy of these incredible men and women and their families.” Sheffield will host the Invictus UK Trials between 22 and 26 July 2019, giving nearly 500 competitors the chance to take part in an adaptive multi-sport event as part of their recovery journey, supported by their friends and family. The programme is delivered by a partnership of Help for Heroes, the Ministry of Defence and the Royal British Legion. Rear Admiral Jim Macleod, Head of Invictus
UK, said: “We are delighted that Eliot has offered his much-admired expertise to kick off what is set to be an incredible week of events in Sheffield. The Big Gig will include some fantastic acts and we are honoured that Eliot and his team have chosen to support Invictus UK in this way.” Eliot has supported military charities since 2013 after travelling to Camp Bastion with Gary Barlow for an ITV documentary, Journey to Afghanistan. Barlow then performed at Kennedy’s Hidden Wounds concert in 2016 in Doncaster to help raise £60,000 for Help for Heroes’ psychological wellbeing services for veterans. He said: “When I went to Afghanistan with Gary, it was an incredibly eye-opening experience. The Armed Forces risked their lives out there on a daily basis and the emotion of that trip stays with me. The Invictus Games show the incredible rehabilitative power of sport. I’ve long believed music has a similar power to bring people together, access our common humanity and be an uplifting force for good. The wounded, injured or sick service personnel and veterans inspire us all with their spirit and strength.” The Big Gig, Sheffield FLY DSA Arena, Monday 22 July 7.30pm. Tickets £25. A limited number of VIP tickets to include after show party are available at £40. Proceeds of The Big Gig will be donated to Invictus UK and Style for Soldiers to support the recovery journeys of our wounded, injured or sick.

monday june 3rd & 17th This modern world does not always seem the place for men of style and vigour. Men with a penchant for sentiment, romance and charm. Men who own tap shoes. Crooners follows the story of three very British gentlemen who exhume the characteristics of a crooner; suave, self-assured, stylish, as they defend the role of a crooner in our modern world. By the very same nature, it is not always obvious that these characteristics are adopted quite so well by the quintessentially British. Cue a splendiferous injection of British comedy. Tongue firmly in cheek. And an Outrageous injection of Big Band Swing.

ANGLER’S CORNER
with Clint Walker
Another mixed week for me; a session after monster tench proved fruitless, but a second session resulted in a few carp which is good news as I’m currently in Scotland and unable to go fishing! I have had intentions of starting my tench campaign for a week or two now. I’ve done some research, visiting the target water, talking to other anglers, and spending hours watching the surface for tell-tale bubbles or fish rolling, so when it finally came to getting underway, I was fairly confident of getting a fish or two. It didn’t work out like that unfortunately… I got to the venue early, as the sun lightened the morning sky, and hurried down to the water to try and get the peg I fancied. There were already two overnight anglers and you can guess where they had set up, so I had to find an alternative. The wind was pushing hard onto the far bank, and with a good depth of water, I thought there may have been a few fish to be had. Not a single tench had given away their position by breaking the oily sheen of the dark surface, so it was purely guesswork on my part. I set up two method feeder rods, knowing that I would be fishing into weed so considered that it would be the best way to present the bait effectively. Both were armed with tiny wafters, both were cast out, and I tightened up to wait. Over the top, a small number of pellets splashed in, and I checked my watch intending to give each feeder forty-five minutes before recasting. The first period passed without any indication, although I had a wary eye on the resident coot population which had, despite only a tiny bit of bait going in, shown interest in my spots. It was soon time to check the feeders and after retrieving them, I noted very little weed around them which meant that the bait had stayed on the frame as required and detached on the lake bed; perfect! A second cast saw one bait picked up and dropped by the coots, so it had to be checked early, but aside from that, once again, nothing happened. I’ve only ever fished the venue once before, landing tincas to over 7lb, but the last time had been with a float,
fished over maggot and corn, rather than the somewhat noisier method feeder approach. My chum Conor dropped into a corner swim just up the bank, quietly flung out some dark groundbait laced with caster, hemp and worm, and gently plopped his float on top. Four hours later, Conor had a couple of fish in the net, including a lump of 7lb 9oz, I had none; a lesson learned… By early afternoon, I’d had enough. I’d eventually seen fish rolling, but they were all on the back of the wind, on the opposite bank and in truth, I’d put all my eggs in one basket, and couldn’t be bothered to move around the lake, so after a final chat to Conor, I went home, with my tail firmly between my legs… I will be back, but I’ll be much more subtle about my tactics next time! A second session saw me seeking carp on a club water where I’m confident of a few bites from the local inhabitants which usually results in a double figure carp coming to the net. Once again, the method feeder came out, a small flat bed feeder replacing the heavier three-vaned feeders, and it was loaded with Spotted Fin Method Ready Pellets. On the hair, a single piece of corn, and it was flicked out a few yards to settle. As if by magic, a pair of black swans appeared in the swim and proceeded to clear both of my baited marginal spots… not once but twice; thanks very much! I moved the feeder out into deeper water, and watched as the tip suddenly shot around, and I found myself making a desperate grab for the rod before it went into the lake! The culprit, a carp of perhaps 3lb, swiftly gave up and was returned gently. Over the next three hours, I managed to trip up another eight carp into double figures, and a solitary bream all of which couldn’t resist the simple tactics employed. It was easy fishing, a welcome result after the previous days failure to catch, and a reflection of just how things can change over the course of twenty-four hours! I’ve still got my mind set on those big tench though, and I’m determined to get one in double figures… I’ve just got to work out how!

Happy summer halliday for Follow Your Local Team Every Week In The Mercury rovers as kane united tackle railway risk-takers says goodbye The EFL Trust has launched a new partnership with Network Rail and the British Transport Police (BTP) to help tackle the increasing number of people risking their lives on the railway. Sheffield United will be part of the project that will help to educate and raise awareness of the dangers of the railway network to young people. New figures released today reveal over 250 incidents a week have been recorded by people taking risks on the railway - taking short-cuts, capturing photos and even ‘train surfing’ - sometimes with tragic consequences. Young people (under 18s) make up one of the largest categories, responsible for a third of all cases. The Blades, will be on of 72 clubs who will be involved in the campaign with activity ranging from social media posts to player messages. Clubs who are within the trespass incident hot
international callups for owls duo SWFC FAN COLUMN BY CHRIS PLATTS
Liam Palmer has received a call-up from Scotland on the international stage. The Wednesday defender is in the first squad of new manager Steve Clarke following the latter’s recent appointment. Scotland will play two games early next month as they resume their Euro 2020 qualifying campaign. Clarke’s men host Cyprus at Hampden Park on Saturday 8 June before travelling across Europe to take on Belgium three days later at the King Baudouin Stadium. Palmer earned his maiden senior cap against Kazakhstan in March this year after graduating through the Under-19 and Under-21 age groups. Meanwhile Owls striker Atdhe Nuhiu has been called up to the Kosovo squad for their forthcoming UEFA Euro qualifiers. Kosovo are set to continue with their Group A qualification campaign with two fixtures against Montenegro and Bulgaria. Nuhiu and the squad will travel to Montenegro on Friday 7 June at the Podgorica City Stadium. Then three days later, Kosovo head to the Vasil Levski National Stadium, Sofia to face Bulgaria. Kosovo have played one game in Group A so far, earning a point from the 1-1 draw at home to Bulgaria in which Nuhiu was an unused substitute. England currently top the group with two wins from their opening two games against Montenegro and Czech Republic.

spot will run workshops in their local communities. Allan Spence, head of passenger & public safety at Network Rail, said: “Children, and adults alike, continue to risk their lives by stepping out onto the track and it has to stop. Every day we see almost 40 incidents and each one could be a potential catastrophe leading to life-changing injuries or even death.” The ‘You vs. Train’ campaign launched last year by the rail industry and British Transport Police saw incidents involving children reduce by 12%, but this vulnerable group continue to be at high risk. Responding to the continued problem, the industry’s railway trespass group has this year launched a new phase of the You vs. Train campaign, forming partnerships with the EFL Trust & StreetGames to drive the rail safety message directly to this hard-to-reach group. At the heart of the issue is a lack of understanding and awareness of the risks. Research undertaken amongst teenagers last year found that, while most are aware that the railway is a dangerous place, most of them don’t realise quite how dangerous it is or the specific dangers they face when they step on the track. Mike Evans, Director of Operations at The EFL Trust, said: “Bringing about positive change in the community is at the very core of The EFL Trust’s values. Football can be an enormous force for good and have a profoundly positive impact on communities - so we are looking forward to helping tackle this issue in those areas where children and young people are particularly vulnerable.” A new film highlighting the hidden dangers of the railway has been launched across social media alongside new content telling the story of Tom - a young boy who suffered life-changing injuries in 2014 when he was electrocuted by the overhead power cables - and his family, to illustrate the life-changing impact that the accident has had on them.
Rovers have completed the signing of exciting full-back Brad Halliday on a two-year deal from July 1 2019. The 23-year-old arrives having played more than 100 times for Cambridge United, and will become a Rovers player once his contract with the U’s expires. Halliday said: “I’m delighted to get it done early in the summer, I’m really looking forward to getting started. The main thing for me was getting the deal signed and being able to relax, with my contract coming to an end at Cambridge I felt it was time for a new challenge. I met Grant once the season had come to an end and once we’d had a chat it felt like the right decision to come here.” Meanwhile Herbie Kane says he will return to Liverpool a more mature person after his loan spell with Rovers came to an end. The influential midfielder was key to Grant McCann’s side reaching the play-offs in his first season in the EFL, and says he will look back on his time at the Keepmoat Stadium with fond memories. He said: “I’ve loved every minute and will always remember my time here, wherever I am next season hopefully Rovers can go on and get promotion from this division. The fans have been excellent and bought into my style of play which I’m grateful for, they deserve some success for the way they’ve supported us. I’ve matured as a person as well as a player while I’ve been here, the players around me have helped me develop on and off the pitch.” After arriving during the week before the season got underway, Kane says he was pleased with how the squad kicked on throughout the campaign. He added: “I’m proud of the team this season, a lot of people tipped us to go down but we surprised everyone and did really well. It shows what type of lads we’ve got in the dressing room, it’s been great to be a part of and I’ve enjoyed it. Getting into the play-offs was a great experience, it was a shame we couldn’t
go further but I won’t forget it.” Rovers have offered contracts to Tommy Rowe, Andy Butler and Danny Andrew to remain at the club. The trio’s current deals run out this summer, but they have been offered terms to stay at the club. However Butler has since expressed his desire to move on. Out of contract players Marko Marosi, Alfie Beestin, Tyler Garratt, Luke McCullough and Liam Mandeville will leave the club after their deals came to an end. Will Longbottom and Alex Kiwomya have been made available for transfer. AJ Greaves, Branden Horton, Myron Gibbons and Rieves Boocock have all moved onto their first professional deals.
ladies’ skipper pre-season planning for millers ellie departs Blades skipper Ellie Gilliatt has announced the 18/19 season will be her first and last season at Sheffield United. Commenting on not taking the decision lightly, Gilliatt says she has been proud to have captained the side through a great first season in the FA Women’s Championship. Blades boss Carla Ward talks about the step up required next season in order to push for a place at the top of the table. “Ellie has done so well this season managing her career, family and playing for United.” Ellie finished off her time at the Blades scoring the opening goal at Bramall Lane on 11th May against Millwall to which the side went on to win 6-0 securing their seventh consecutive win this season. Sheffield United wish Ellie all the best for the future and thank her for her commitment and contribution to the team this season.
Rotherham United will welcome West Bromwich Albion to AESSEAL New York Stadium for a friendly fixture on Tuesday 23rd July as part of their pre-season preparations. The Millers will host the Baggies in a 7:45pm kick off in South Yorkshire for what will be Paul Warne’s side’s penultimate test before the 2019/20 campaign. The clubs met recently in the Sky Bet Championship in a fixture which saw the Millers’ relegation to the third tier confirmed at The Hawthorns on Saturday 27th April following a brave display which had seen them take the lead in the Midlands. The Baggies narrowly missed out on promotion to the Premier League at the end of the 2018/19 campaign after being defeated by Aston Villa in the Play-offs and will provide a tough test for the Millers, who will have one friendly fixture left in
