doncaster town centre makeover continues The £2 million Quality Streets project has started to transform Silver Street into a vibrant and attractive area in Doncaster’s town centre. The regeneration project has already made a huge difference on Hall Gate. This prominent street has been turned into a classy, pedestrian friendly area. It has benefited from

extended York stone paving areas, new lighting, trees, new bus stops, a cycle lane and made a one way street for traffic. With more space created outside shops it will be perfect for alfresco dining. The final section at the top of Hall Gate will be completed early summer. Attentions have now turned to Silver Street. This popular area will receive a similar top

quality overhaul to make it even more attractive for visitors Similar high end landscaping will be used to dramatically improve the look and feel of the area. A modern, bespoke lighting scheme will also be installed to bring colour, animation and excitement at night. A key change will see Silver Street become a one-way street during

the day and closed for traffic in an evening. This will ensure it is a pedestrian friendly area, making it more inviting for visitors and encouraging more alfresco areas. It will be complete late 2019. Mayor Ros Jones said: “We have big ambitions for Doncaster town centre and Quality Streets is one of the many major schemes we are delivering which are making such a difference. The improvements to Hall Gate are clear to see and the makeover

of Silver Street will see it transformed, making it the place to go particularly in an evening when the light animations bring it alive. We are determined to help produce a thriving town centre by delivering projects which attract more visitors, support existing businesses and encourage new investment and job creation. A strong town centre benefits the whole of our borough.” Dan Jarvis, Mayor of the Sheffield City Region, said: “When I became Mayor I

www.facebook.com/themercurynewspaper promised to support the regeneration of Doncaster town centre. I’m therefore delighted that, thanks to funding from the Sheffield City Region, this important project is now underway. It is vital that we rethink how our town centres work, to ensure they remain vibrant and sustainable places for people to live, work and enjoy their leisure time. Doncaster has set out an ambitious but deliverable masterplan

to achieve that, and I’m glad to be working with the Council to help drive that plan forward.” To enable the works to take place safely, Silver Street will be closed for traffic with a diversion in place. It will be open for pedestrians and the shops will be open for business as normal. The council led Quality Streets scheme is part of the Innovation Quarter in the overarching Urban Centre Masterplan. The

Silver Street works are being completed by local firm Derek Lewis Ltd. The Quality Streets scheme has received £1.35 million of funding from the Sheffield City Region Local Growth Fund (LGF). This is Government funding awarded to Local Enterprise Partnerships (LEPs) for projects that benefit the local area and economy.
