doncaster town centre makeover continues The £2 million Quality Streets project has started to transform Silver Street into a vibrant and attractive area in Doncaster’s town centre. The regeneration project has already made a huge difference on Hall Gate. This prominent street has been turned into a classy, pedestrian friendly area. It has benefited from
extended York stone paving areas, new lighting, trees, new bus stops, a cycle lane and made a one way street for traffic. With more space created outside shops it will be perfect for alfresco dining. The final section at the top of Hall Gate will be completed early summer. Attentions have now turned to Silver Street. This popular area will receive a similar top
quality overhaul to make it even more attractive for visitors Similar high end landscaping will be used to dramatically improve the look and feel of the area. A modern, bespoke lighting scheme will also be installed to bring colour, animation and excitement at night. A key change will see Silver Street become a one-way street during
the day and closed for traffic in an evening. This will ensure it is a pedestrian friendly area, making it more inviting for visitors and encouraging more alfresco areas. It will be complete late 2019. Mayor Ros Jones said: “We have big ambitions for Doncaster town centre and Quality Streets is one of the many major schemes we are delivering which are making such a difference. The improvements to Hall Gate are clear to see and the makeover
of Silver Street will see it transformed, making it the place to go particularly in an evening when the light animations bring it alive. We are determined to help produce a thriving town centre by delivering projects which attract more visitors, support existing businesses and encourage new investment and job creation. A strong town centre benefits the whole of our borough.” Dan Jarvis, Mayor of the Sheffield City Region, said: “When I became Mayor I
www.facebook.com/themercurynewspaper promised to support the regeneration of Doncaster town centre. I’m therefore delighted that, thanks to funding from the Sheffield City Region, this important project is now underway. It is vital that we rethink how our town centres work, to ensure they remain vibrant and sustainable places for people to live, work and enjoy their leisure time. Doncaster has set out an ambitious but deliverable masterplan
to achieve that, and I’m glad to be working with the Council to help drive that plan forward.” To enable the works to take place safely, Silver Street will be closed for traffic with a diversion in place. It will be open for pedestrians and the shops will be open for business as normal. The council led Quality Streets scheme is part of the Innovation Quarter in the overarching Urban Centre Masterplan. The
Silver Street works are being completed by local firm Derek Lewis Ltd. The Quality Streets scheme has received £1.35 million of funding from the Sheffield City Region Local Growth Fund (LGF). This is Government funding awarded to Local Enterprise Partnerships (LEPs) for projects that benefit the local area and economy.

council to tackle problems of pavement parking Sheffield City Council has called for more powers to enforce against pavement parking as pressure mounts on the government to tackle the problem.Obstructive pavement parking presents dangers for people with disabilities or mobility restrictions, and for parents with buggies. It can also be dangerous for cyclists as cycle lanes often run next to or on the footway. The Council has submitted written evidence to the Transport Committee’s Pavement Parking Inquiry, saying it wants to find a
“flexible solution” to tackle problematic and perilous parking. It urges the government review to give more powers to enforce against poor pavement parking. The council can already enforce pavement parking where there are double or single yellow lines, or where a clearway restriction exists. However, these restrictions also prevent parking on the road too. There are many parts of the Sheffield’s roads where installing such restrictions would generate other problems. For example more than a quarter of Sheffield’s housing is terraced with
narrow streets and little opportunity for creating off-road parking. On these streets, some sensible pavement parking would be very welcome for residents. Currently, residents only have the option of contacting the police to request they deal with vehicles obstructing the foot way. Police often don’t have the resources required to prioritise these requests over serious crimes. This can lead to frustration for residents. A flexible solution, based on an offence of obstruction, would see pavement parking being actively managed
on many of Sheffield’s narrow roads so that footways are freed up for all pedestrians. The Council would look to set its own policy to support any new powers; one that is clear and transparent. This would provide positive guidance to all drivers on where they could safely park, but also where poor parking would see enforcement. Councillor Bob Johnson said: “I’ve only been in post for a few weeks but it is clear to me that we need more powers to tackle pavement parking. Pavements should not be for parking and far too many people are taking
shocking decisions, often where there is no need to do so. I’ve asked officers to step up patrols and activity wherever possible but accept that they often don’t have the full set of enforcement options available to them. It is hard to impose a total ban on pavement parking however, because the nature of many of Sheffield’s roads means that parking partially over a kerb is often seen as unavoidable. But this should not be seen as an excuse across the city. I am calling for clarity and a series of standards that can be enforced.”

after 64 years yearsterRence terence is a quitter
Terrence started smoking at the age of 17 as cigarettes in Germany were so cheap. After 64 years of smoking Terrence decided this was the year he was going to QUIT for good. Terrence attended weekly 1 to 1 support sessions at his GP surgery receiving the support and medication he needed to finally become Smoke free. Smoking up to 20 cigarettes a day Terrence wanted to quit to benefit both his health and his bank balance. Terrence also plays the bag pipes on a weekly basis and did not want continued smoking to start affecting his bag pipe playing ! Terrence said the support he received with Yorkshire Smokefree along with using champix to help him stop smoking has been excellent, he thinks without the fantastic support he would not have managed to stop smoking. Terrence can already feel the benefits of being a non smoker, his chest is clear and even with his COPD he feels he has more air in his lungs than ever before, good news for a bag piper ! The fact that everything tastes better than when Terrence was a smoker is also a great motivation. With money saved Terrence has been able to treat his Great Grandchildren. If Terrence could give one bit of
advice to anyone who has recently started smoking or go back in time and tell his younger self something it would be ‘ Don’t be a fool’ Terrence is proof it is never too late to QUIT. If you would like more information on how you too can become smoke free then contact Yorkshire Smoke Free today on 0800 612 0011

I accidentally swallowed some Scrabble tiles. My next toilet visit could spell disaster. A little five year old girl was usually driven to school in the mornings by her Grandad, but one day he had a bad cold so her Grandmother took her. That night the little girl told her parents that the ride to school with Granny was very different. What made it different? asked her parents. Well, she replied, Gran and I didn’t see a single idiot, blind sod or moron on the whole journey. Boss: so..you lied about reading the report! Me: yeah it’s kind of a catch 22 thing Boss: how so? Me: I lied about reading that too. I’m going to have to throw out this shirt or sew it seams. Two weasels are sitting on a bar stool. One starts to insult the other one. He screams, “I slept with your mother!” The bar gets quiet as everyone listens to see what the other weasel will do. The first again yells, “I SLEPT WITH YOUR MOTHER!” The other says, “Go home dad you’re drunk.” ‘Knock Knock’,’Who’s there?’, ‘Impatient cow’, ‘Impat..’. ‘MOO’! My wife and I are having a competition to see who can steal the most dog related stuff from our local petshop.. I’ve just taken the lead. I burnt my Hawaiian Pizza last night. Must use Aloha setting. We are aware many give up fitness classes because they are too demanding and not at all fun! Michelangelo and Maureen with this in mind have created SOLO the first equipment supported dance fitness class that is accessible to every age group, gender ,body shape and level of fitness or disability. The class is based around Michelangelo’s revolutionary solo dance step aid that supports the user to improve mobility and aerobic capacity at all levels from professional dancers or those with age related disability. NO DANCE experience required as each class member is supported individually within their fitness and skills in relation to balance, posture, movement and dissociation. The classes consist of a warm up routine, then the class learns a fun basic routine using adapted argentine tango steps which encompasses the techniques of balance, posture , dissociation whilst giving a low impact aerobic workout and we do this every week. Then the last part of the class we introduce different flavours of dance such as salsa, cha cha cha, Charleston and more in simple routines to add variety and even more fun to the class. Always wanted to get up and dance at functions this class will move you from observer to participant with confidence of being able to do some basic steps to get you round a dance floor. FATHERS DAY SPECIAL. Partner wanting to learn but opts out because they say “i have 2 left feet”? The class can give them the confidence to know anyone can learn to dance. So book them up for a 6 week course paid in advance = and the last session is FREE.! Not convinced?

dad conquering kilimanjaro TO THANK CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL FOR SON’S LIFE-SAVING CARE
“What, YOU?” That was the response Steve Gullick from Rotherham got from his ten-year-old twins, Thomas and Jacob, when he told them he was climbing Kilimanjaro this September to raise money for Sheffield Children’s Hospital. Steve, 40, admits: “They know it’s not something I would normally do. I hate walking and camping.” While his sons may doubt he is up to the challenge of climbing the world’s tallest free-standing mountain, there can be no uncertainty over his motivation. His son Thomas was diagnosed with a cancerous tumour in December 2015. Mum Rebecca, 40, recalls: “The week before he was playing rugby, he had no illness, I just found a lump. We initially thought it was an abscess, but a biopsy at Sheffield Children’s Hospital confirmed it was cancer. “It was a huge shock, my reaction was one of complete devastation- one minute we had a healthy child, the next he had cancer. It was so frightening.” Steve continues: “Everything was turned upside down really quickly. The tumour came out of his pelvis, so he couldn’t sit down. We even had to cut short a family trip to see Santa and Lapland and he had to eat Christmas dinner standing up.” Thomas’ treatment journey spanned several
rounds of life-saving chemotherapy at Sheffield Children’s Hospital, where the family spent their time on the hospital’s cancer and leukaemia ward. The Children’s Hospital Charity’s new appeal will transform the ward with more space, privacy and natural light, giving patients a place to make their own and space for a parent to sleep comfortably alongside them. The redevelopment will also increase the ward footprint, with larger bed bays and more isolation rooms. It will also more than double the size of the ward class room. Steve said: “When he was ill, I was talking with friends about what I could do to help the hospital and we saw the Kilimanjaro challenge. Whenever it gets hard, I’m going to think of what Thomas has been through, that’s so much worse than anything I can possibly imagine. If he can do that, I can certainly do this and anything we can do to make the environment nicer for other families will be more than worth it.” Tchad Western, Corporate Partnerships Manager at The Children’s Hospital Charity added: “It’s so heart-warming to see Steve commit to such a bold challenge to thank the hospital for the care Thomas’ received at our hospital.

1321 05/06/2019 12 tips to make your home safe from burglars Homes with no security measures are five times more likely to be burgled than those where owners have taken simple security precautions, according to police figures. Furthermore, there’s a burglary approximately every 40 seconds in the UK, so making sure your home is as protected as possible really is key. “Burglars are often opportunistic thieves, who seek any opening they can take advantage of, specifically doors and windows left open or unlocked, or that are easy to force. But it really doesn’t take much to deter these thieves – just smart thinking,” says Kenny McHugh, senior development officer for the national police crime prevention initiative, Secured by Design (SBD; securedbydesign.com). “Physical and visible deterrents give the criminal the first indication that the owner of a property has an awareness around security, and the criminal will often move on elsewhere to look for somewhere quicker and easier to break in to,” he adds. Meanwhile, here are some home-security tips from Crimestoppers’ (crimestoppersuk.org) and SBD… 1. Make the house look occupied Crimestoppers recommends switching lights and/or a radio on when you go out – you can buy timer devices to do this automatically. If you’re going away on holiday, use timers for the lights, and ask a neighbour to keep an eye on your house, take in any milk and newspaper deliveries, and maybe even park on your drive. 2. Hide keys Hide all keys, including car keys, out of sight and well away from the letterbox, as a device could be used to hook keys through it. 3. Install a burglar alarm Consider a good intruder alarm system installed by a reputable alarm company – there’s guidance on NSI and SSIAB accreditation for alarms on the Secured
by Design website. Crimestoppers advises fitting burglar alarms with flashing lights and sound at the front and back of your property. However, the police warn that an alarm should be installed as part of a series of crime prevention measures, as on its own it won’t prevent entry to your home. 4. Lower fencing While you might think higher fences keep your home protected, the reality is that the lower the fence, the easier it is for intruders to be spotted. “Burglars don’t want to be seen, so lower fences at the front of a property are better than high fences as they allow for natural vision over and don’t provide cover for someone hiding,” explains McHugh. “Likewise with hedges at the front of your property – keep them at a height where passers-by can maximise the natural vision.” Lower fences can help deter intruders (iStock/PA) 5. Always lock windows and doors Burglars often look for homes with windows or doors left open, or with vulnerable features they can exploit. Crimestoppers warns householders to check all doors and windows are properly closed and locked before going out, even if it’s only for a few minutes or you’re just out in the garden. And when you’re at home, try not to leave accessible windows open at night. If you need new windows or doors, SBD recommends fitting ones with Police Preferred Specification, which have been tested to ensure they’re robust enough to resist physical attack by burglars. 6. Fit outdoor sensor lighting Outdoor lights operated by sensors will make intruders feel vulnerable and observed, so consider dusk-to-dawn lighting which illuminates areas such as the front, side and rear of your home. Crimestoppers advises householders to

Worrying figures show a growth in fraud both online & offline - and in mnay cases embarrassment means that victims do not report the crime. Andy has a role within South Yorkshire Police investigating fraud and helping the victims of these crimes through the difficult time.
A former chef turned SYP employee has begun a new role after over 15-years with the force, this time in the Financial Crime Investigation Unit. Andy Foster, who began working with SYP on secondment in 2001 on a burglary initiative with the universities, is now several months in to his new role as a Fraud Protect Officer. Andy brings with him a wealth of experience, having previously worked as the force’s first civilian HQ crime reduction officer (HQ CRO), deputy force crime reduction supervisor and project officer with community safety. He is incredibly passionate about working with vulnerable people and has an extensive history of working with vulnerable communities, partner agencies, victims of crimes and publicising positive results with local media. As part of his role, Andy will be working closely with victims of any kind of fraud to help put protective and preventative measures in place and to also educate family and friends about what they can do to help. He said: “I have had many roles within SYP but I have always had this passion to support vulnerable people, particularly the elderly. Through most of my career with SYP I have supported vulnerable adults and during my time as HQ CRO I dealt with number of distraction burglary

Check outside Crimestoppers advises homeowners not to leave garden tools outside, and keep ladders out of sight, as they could be used to break into your home. Make sure sheds, garages, outbuildings and exterior gates are locked. 8. Install CCTV CCTV and smart doorbells, which can have live video streaming, motion sensors and two-way audio, can alert you to someone inside the boundary of your property if they’re monitored, for example by being linked to a smart-phone. 9. Mark property Make valuables less attractive to thieves by using a police accredited forensic marking solution to mark valuables with your postcode and house number. “Property marking is a great deterrent and makes it easier for the police to trace and recover stolen articles,” says McHugh. Also, register valued possessions with the free Immobilise property registration service (immobilise.com). 10. Go for gravel Gravel driveways and paths are ideal at preventing a silent approach. 11. Join Neighbourhood Watch Crime prevention experts recommend joining your local Neighbourhood Watch (ourwatch.org.uk) scheme, and McHugh says: “These help to cut crime and the opportunities for crime, and encourage neighbourliness and closer communities.” 12. Get a dog The police say getting a dog is a personal preference and isn’t usually a specific crime prevention measure, as some will bark at the sound of anyone approaching the house and others may not. However, there’s no doubt that if you’ve got a dog that does bark when it hears an unexpected noise, it will help deter burglars – particularly if the dog is big!
and rogue trader victims. It was this that convinced me I wanted to do more to help and work with vulnerable communities. I am proud to represent SYP and always have been, however, I have made it a bit of a mission to do all I can to support vulnerable people. Over two years ago I was asked to help with Operation Signature a police initiative to support vulnerable victims of fraud, part of this was visiting victims of crime. Many people’s experiences I have personally dealt with will stay with me forever. These memories drive me to do all I can to work with our communities raising awareness of the methods used by fraudsters to try and keep people safer. There are many hundreds of victims in the UK that police and partners are not aware of as they haven’t report the crime. This can be due to feeling embarrassed or ashamed, I ask anyone who is a victim of crime, please, do not suffer in silence, despite how bad people feel, a problem shared is far less of a burden than carrying it alone. I am determined to do as much as I can to work with communities and partner agencies to raise awareness of how these criminals operate and what steps we can all take to reduce the risk of these crime happening against our most vulnerable people. Half of this role is to visit victims of fraud or their families

An increasing demand for skilled healthcare professionals has led to a shortage of allied healthcare workers, especially phlebotomists - the skilled healthcare professionals who take your blood. Demand is at an all-time high with hospitals, clinics and GP Surgeries offering a golden opportunity for that “longed for” career change! If you have good people skills and manual dexterity, and like the idea of working in a busy healthcare environment, a phlebotomist job may be just the job for you! Many people enter this profession when they are looking for a career change or a fresh start and they often have no previous qualifications or experience in healthcare. Phlebotomists can work part time (usually mornings) but also may choose to work full time as well as weekends, holidays and bank work. Blood samples are usually collected before mid-day and then analysed in your local hospital’s Path Lab in the afternoon. “We train people from all walks of life and all ages” explains Amy, Geopace office manager. “We’ve had school leavers, shop assistants, receptionists, beauticians and dental nurses, as well as telesales staff, unemployed and the retired who are looking for a challenge. We also have referrals from JobCentres (DWP), who can sometimes pay for your course in full if you are eligible” says Amy. Once you are on the healthcare career ladder there are often opportunities to progress into other areas, such as working in the hospital path lab or other departments. Promotion is much easier once you are “on the ladder” and have some experience behind you. Many Geopace students are now working as phlebotomists throughout the UK and a few have even chosen to work abroad where there is often a similar shortage and growing demand for this specialised skill. An interesting booklet featuring student’s “Success Stories” is written by the student’s themselves and looks at how they have made the move from wide and varied backgrounds to find themselves now working as phlebotomists. A copy can be downloaded from the Geopace website’s testimonials page. If you like the idea of a challenging career in healthcare and particularly in phlebotomy then this may be the perfect move for you! The comprehensive training course last a full two days and culminates in the award of a nationally recognised and accredited certificate. “We practice taking blood from artificial arms”, says Amy “and everyone on our course has a lot of fun! We get a great deal of satisfaction later on when we hear from our students that they are working for their local GP surgery or in their local hospital.” Courses are running in Rotherham on Saturday & Sunday 10th & 11th August and places are very limited. If you would like to know more about phlebotomy as a career or to book a place on the course visit Geopace Training’s website at www.geopace.net

queen’s award for st luke’s volunteers THEY’RE simply the best…and they have the Royal seal of approval to prove it! The volunteers of St Luke’s Hospice in Sheffield have been awarded the coveted Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service. The Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service is the highest award given to volunteer groups across the UK and recognises the St Luke’s volunteers who give 116,800 hours of their time each year, helping to deliver the best possible care to patients and their families. The award pays tribute to the 745 people who regularly give their time for free to support the services provided for terminally ill people throughout Sheffield by St Luke’s. Those volunteers – aged from just 14 to 94 – take part in a wide range of activities including fundraising, patient transport, bereavement counselling, recording life histories, being patient companions, delivering food parcels, tending the hospice’s gardens and providing vital support in the award winning chain of 14 St Luke’s shops across the city. They also help provide nearly 3,000 free places each year on supported activities at both St Luke’s and at Clifford House – the St Luke’s centre for people affected by life limiting illnesses. And their enthusiasm, effort and imagination help to raise more than £7 million annually. Between them, these volunteers provide an estimated 116,800 hours of support throughout the year, helping 1,834 patients as well as their families and loved ones. It is a level of commitment and enthusiasm that is estimated to be worth almost £1 million to St Luke’s every year. The nomination for the award was made by keen St Luke’s supporter Anne Broadhead,
supported by former Lord Mayor of Sheffield Coun Denise Fox and the former Chief Executive of Sheffield City Council, Lord Kerslake. “No aspect of St Luke’s care could be delivered without their dedicated efforts,” Lord Kerslake commented. “The community of Sheffield is lucky to have this support for such a worthy cause, across 48 years, helping to ensure that those affected by terminal illness receive the support and specialist care they need and deserve, all free of charge. St Luke’s doesn’t just happen – it only exists because over 700 volunteers are prepared to play their part, together supporting the hospice to bring essential services to the city, within a culture of care that other healthcare services can only envy. That collective spirit of volunteering is so embedded within St Luke’s that it pervades every aspect of its work and values.” St Luke’s Chief Executive Peter Hartland said: “I want to express my delight that St Luke’s fabulous volunteers have been awarded the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service. This accolade is truly earned and we are so proud to be supported by such wonderful people. This is an honour that recognises the efforts across the last 48 years - and in future years too - and is a true reflection of the wonderful memories our volunteers help to create for so many.” Meanwhile the hospice has benefitted financially through the efforts of two local organisations. MEMBERS of FIT4FIT gym put themselves through a gruelling 24 hours of training as they raised money for two of Sheffield’s top charities. The fitness challenge at the Tankersley gym was organised by business owner Katie Ford in memory of her friend, well known
Sheffield businesswoman Deborah Holmes, who was a St Luke’s Hospice patient. And the marathon session raised a final total of £8,565.48, which is being shared by St Luke’s and Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice. And STAFF and visitors at St Luke’s Hospice in Sheffield are set to enjoy an improved dining experience thanks to funding support from the Scarborough Group Foundation, the charitable arm of Scarborough Group, the private family business of Sheffield United co-owner Kevin McCabe,This latest donation of £10,000 goes to the St Luke’s café improvement and renovation project, the final part of the complete transformation of the hospice’s Little Common Lane catering facilities. It will create a relaxing environment for staff and volunteers to get food and drinks on their breaks as well as providing an improved public dining space for patients’ families and visitors. “We are delighted to be able to contribute to the vital work that St Luke’s affords to the people of Sheffield,” said Mr McCabe. “Either via The Scarborough Group Foundation or the Sheffield United Community Foundation, we continue to support local city institutions and local organisations which provide much needed support to the health and wellbeing of the Sheffield Community and in particular to those, who through circumstance deserve and need help, funds and inspiration.” St Luke’s Chief Executive Peter Hartland added: “We are so pleased that, thanks to this extremely generous donation from The Scarborough Group Foundation, we are able to complete the huge project of bringing our catering services for patients, visitors and staff up to the standard required in the 21st century.

Men with a penchant for sentiment, romance and charm. Men who own tap shoes. Crooners follows the story of three very British gentlemen who exhume the characteristics of a crooner; suave, self-assured, stylish, as they defend the role of a crooner in our modern world. By the very same nature, it is not always obvious that these characteristics are adopted quite so well by the quintessentially British. Cue a splendiferous injection of British comedy. Tongue firmly in cheek. And an Outrageous injection of Big Band Swing.

donny youngsters earn rewards joe coaches young stoppers Young aspiring goalkeepers were treated to a special Soccer Camp with Owls shotstopper Joe Wildsmith this week. The Wednesday custodian took time out of his summer break to coach a dedicated goalkeeper camp at the Owls’ Middlewood Road training ground. There was an excellent turnout too from the young goalkeepers, who were all keen to learn from the Wednesday academy graduate. Wildsmith, who was recently crowned the Owls’ Community Player of the Year, first coached at Soccer Camps last year. He said: “It was good to get down there and see such a good turnout. “I’ve been to the camps at the training ground when I was a young lad and it’s nice to see lots of kids still wanting to be goalkeepers!”
Nine Rovers Academy players have been given first year scholarships by Academy manager Tony Cook. Charlie Bell, Ethan Bojang, Josh Clemitson, Owain Devvett, Max Jemson, Lewis Cunningham, Liam Ravenhill, Ben Bottomly and Luca Nelson have all been rewarded for their hard work by signing a first year scholarship with the club. This rounds off an impressive season for the Academy. The U18 team came second in the Youth Alliance North East Division pushing eventual winners Grimsby Town right to the last day and were also ranked top for education in the country. Tony said: “I’m delighted that nine of our academy players have signed on to become first year scholars. It’s a testament to the quality that is coming through the Doncaster Academy at the moment. Each of the nine boys has worked exceptionally hard both on and off the field to be given
this opportunity and I’m sure they will make the most of it. All of these young men have made appearances in the U18s team in the 2018/19 season and all of them have shown a lot of potential and are developing nicely. We are excited to see where that potential can take them. Rovers is a club that offers a genuine pathway from U8s through to the first-team and that has been proved with Reives Boocock, Branden Horton, and Lirak Hasani all making first team appearances while Myron Gibbons and AJ Greaves have both appeared on the bench. They are leading the way and showing the rest of the academy how it can be done. This is, in large, a testament to the first-team management staff and Grant McCann and Cliff Byrne as they continue to show faith in the youngsters and giving academy players an opportunity.”
