FLYOVER PLANNED 75TH ANNIVERSARY CEREMONY A 75th Anniversary D-Day Remembrance Ceremony took place last weekend at the dedicated memorial in Weston Park. Following a dedication event last year, Sheffield City Council installed a memorial stone and bench at Weston Park alongside the memorial tree which was planted by Normandy veterans. The granite stone which sits alongside the memorial English oak tree is inscribed ‘In memory of all those from the Sheffield region who served in the Normandy campaign June to August 1944.’ Graham Askham,

secretary of the Normandy Veterans Sheffield and District, said: “We are absolutely delighted that the memorial bench has been installed at Weston Park. The bench completes the Normandy Memorial along with the tree we planted last year, and the inscribed granite memorial stone. I cannot thank Sheffield City Council enough for their dedication, patience and thoughtful consideration of our requests.” When the council announced that 300 memorial trees would be planted across parks in the city, the Normandy Veterans Sheffield and District contacted the

parks service to request a Normandy memorial tree in Weston Park. A number of veterans attended the planting and placed a small amount of sand from the three Normandy landing beaches into the tree pit in memory of their fallen comrades. Since the tree was planted the council has worked with the Normandy Veterans to create a lasting memorial that will keep the stories of the Normandy landings alive for many generations. The stone marker was installed earlier this year and the memorial bench, inscribed ‘Dedicated to the Normandy Veterans, Sheffield and District, We

will remember them’ was finalised last week. Graham Askham continued: “Holding the ceremony and wreath laying here on the 75th Anniversary of the D-Day landings at the exact time of the Liberation of France, in memory of all those who lost their lives, has been a very special moment for us, for which we are extremely grateful. I hope that people will continue to pay their respects here in Weston Park so that the bravery of our fallen will be remembered for generations to come.” The council have been working closely with the Sheffield Normandy

Veterans to invite veterans from across the North of England who will gather for a full service and flyover in Sheffield on Saturday 15 June. The service and fly-over will take place at Norfolk Park in Sheffield, to commemorate the 75th Anniversary of the D-Day Landings. This has been timed to allow Normandy Veterans to attend events in Normandy itself last weekend. Full details of the flyover event and service will be available on Sheffield Council’s website and Social Media in the next few days.

FUNDING NOW AVAILABLE FOR UCI ROAD WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS CREATIVE PROJECTS Let’s get creative for the UCI Road World Championships – that’s the message from Doncaster Council to communities who can now bid for funds to boost their preparations for the international cycling event in September. The Micro Grant Scheme, launched this week, is being offered to communities to bid for up to £200 to host

events in their area. The events are aimed at encouraging people to take part in physical activity and sport to become more active and to also facilitate a ‘festival atmosphere’ in the build up to the races. Ros Jones, Mayor of Doncaster, said: “We are all really looking forward to the Road World Championships in September which will be a once in a lifetime

opportunity for our residents to see these races speed through their communities. “Our businesses, schools and communities have made us so proud in the past when they’ve pulled out all the stops to welcome cyclists from the Tour de Yorkshire. I have no doubt that this will be another opportunity to show the world the pride we have for Doncaster and where

we live.” To bid for a grant of up to £200, groups can access details and download the application form at www.doncaster. gov.uk/uci or email UCIdoncaster@ doncaster.gov.uk

The scheme is open until Friday 9 August. Two separate races will take place on Friday 27 September. The

DICKINSON’S REAL DEAL IS COMING TO SHEFFIELD

right price, David and the dealers are going to be in Sheffield on Saturday 15th June at:

I was at a restaurant and said to the waitress ”Excuse me, can I ask you something about the menu please?” She kicked me out and said “The men I please are none of your business!”

I started a new job as a security guard last night. Before he left my boss told me I had to make sure I watched the office all night. I am on season 2 already but I don’t know what it has to do with security.

ITV’s Hit Antiques Show Presented by David Dickinson is looking for local people to cash in their antiques & valuables. Why let your antiques collect dust in the attic when you can sell them for cash? Take money on the spot from a dealer OR if you think your item is worth more….take a gamble at auction! Dickinson’s Real Deal is currently one of the most popular daytime shows on ITV and is regularly watched by over a million people. Back for a Sixteenth series, David Dickinson and the dealers are traveling around the country looking for some more bobby dazzlers brought in by members of the public! If you want to sell your goods, but only for the

Doors will be open between 8am and 5pm – David & the team look forward to seeing you there!

I have just finished interviewing a young man for a job at my workplace. I asked, “Can you perform under pressure?” “I’m not sure, but I do an amazing Bohemian Rhapsody!” He replied.

Comments from David Dickinson: “It’s great to bring the show to Sheffield” “People of Sheffield come along and get the Real Deal” As usual David Dickinson will be keeping an eye on the deals and giving advice about whether to take the dealers’ cash OR gamble at auction. But the final decision lies with our contributors and it’s up to them to decide which option is the REAL DEAL!

I always told my dad his pride would be the death of him. And sure enough, today he was eaten by his favourite lion. Two windmills are in a field. One asks, “What kind of music do you like?” The other one says, “Well, I’m a big metal fan.” A man goes to a costume party with nothing but a naked woman on his back. “What are you supposed to be, then?” the host asks. “I’m a turtle,” “How can you be a turtle when all you’ve got is that naked woman on your back?” “Oh her?” He smiles. “That’s just Michelle!” My best friend was killed with a starting pistol today. Police think it may be race-related. My wife thinks she is funnier than me and she keeps making bird puns! I told her Toucan play at that game! I want to die peacefully in my sleep, like my grandfather did. Not screaming and yelling like the passengers in his taxi.

You may have a yearning to get away from it all, especially if you are dealing with issues that are heavy going. If it seems you are being dealt a bad hand by someone in authority, then you might want to vent, but could instead turn feelings of frustration against yourself. Call for more…

Something may be about to come to a head. It may be linked with your desire to move forward with an ambition, and the family’s reluctance for you to go down this route. A delightful aspect this weekend can help you find equanimity, and could incline you to consider a compromise. Call for more…

The challenge is how to be honest about an issue without it descending into an argument, especially if feelings are upset. If emotions have been building, then handling this in a restrained way might not be easy. You could even be tempted to cut off completely from the person involved. Call for more…

With Mercury and Mars poised to oppose Pluto, it may take the utmost patience not to fall out with someone who riles you intensely. Matters could reach boiling point around midweek, and this might even be the end of this association, unless you can discuss this at another time. Call for more…

For now, it is not a good idea to push your luck, especially when dealing with business or financial matters. Even so, with the Sun and Venus in your sign, you do have the ability to put a new spin on an idea and to sell it in a very credible way. Very soon it may be a yes! Call for more advice…

The Full Moon in your sign, may coincide with the end of a project and a chance to diversify or the opportunity to let go of a bad habit. You and another may not see eye-to-eye over a financial or business matter though, and this could fuel a negative response. Leave talks until the weekend. Call for more…

Intense aspects involving powerful Pluto could push your limits, especially around midweek, when an issue you’re having with someone could come to a head. However, as the Sun enters your sign on Friday and Neptune rewinds, key insights could bring just the answers you need. Call for more…

Feelings could reach a fever pitch, and trying to rationalize them away may not work. The Sun’s move into your sector of relating later though, could be a force for healing if you can steer clear of heated conversations midweek. It’s possible a positive shift could occur as a result of this. Call for more…

Are you sabotaging your best interests? With an intense line-up, you may unconsciously channel anger in an unhelpful way. It is possible that you have very strong feelings about a co-worker, boss or about other issues at work. You likely need to talk about it Leo. Call for more astral advice…

If you’re holding a celebration or get-together at the time of the Full Moon, it could be a boisterous and delightful occasion. In addition, insights could encourage you to consider the wisdom of looking after yourself, and that includes processing through and releasing difficult emotions. Call for more…

There is potential for a fall-out with a friend, and unless you tread with care, it could end up causing difficulties. You may find it hard not to speak out about something that has got to you lately, and getting it out into the open is certainly better than holding it in. Call for more news and advice…

By making your feelings public, you may realize just how many others share your concerns, and this could be a revelation. Also, you and a friend or group might clash over a key matter. If you can avoid rocking the boat around midweek, there is a chance that you can work this out. Call for more…

ISSUE

1322 12/06/2019 SPOT SCAMS - 2019 SCAMS AWARENESS CAMPAIGN Taking place over two weeks from 10th-23rd June 2019, Scams Awareness is a yearly campaign which raises awareness of how scammers operate and how people can protect themselves. Age UK understands that older people are often vulnerable to scams and are increasingly likely to be targeted by fraudsters. Almost five million people aged 65 and over believe that that they have been targeted by scammers1, and with this in mind Age UK has created a range of advice to help older people and their families spot and avoid the latest scams targeting their money. Caroline Abrahams, Charity Director at Age UK, said: “Fraudsters will often callously target older people with scams, preying on vulnerabilities such as loneliness, financial pressures, health conditions and bereavement. However, being scammed is something that can happen to any of us. Scams have become so sophisticated that even those of us who are good at managing our money and using the internet are just as likely to be at risk. That is why Age UK has developed a range of resources which provide practical steps to ensure older people are able to protect themselves against this type of crime in their home and on their doorstep.” As well as free information and advice guides including Avoiding scams, Staying safe and Internet security, which are available to view and download online, or by calling Age UK’s Advice Line on 0800 169 65 65, the Charity is also issuing the following tips: Age UK’s top tips for avoiding scams •1 Don’t rush into anything Scammers try to rush people into making quick decisions by claiming that a great offer or investment is time-limited. Don’t be rushed and seek advice from family and friends or call an advice agency such as Citizens Advice Consumer Service on 03454 04 05 06. •2 Make sure the company is reputable Before you commit to buying, check the seller. Does the company have a contact number that works and a postal address, and is it a member of a trade association? Financial companies must be authorised by the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) – you can check atwww.fca.org.uk/register or call 0800 111 6768. 3 Know who’s on your doorstep When answering the door to an unexpected caller, remember: Lock, Stop, Chain, Check. Make sure all your doors are locked, stop to think if you are expecting anyone, put the door chain on, and check who it is. Ask for an identity card or phone the company they represent to check who they are. Think about putting up a notice saying you don’t buy on the doorstep.

Solo Fitness Tango A New Way to get Fit in Doncaster! Classes Every Monday 13.45 - 14.45 & 18.15 - 19.15 Contact Maureen 07503 083835 email: mcangelo@live.com www.cilentitango.danceorg.uk

If you’re suspicious or the caller won’t leave, call 101 if you’re not in immediate danger or 999 in an emergency. •4 Beware of banking scams Your bank would never call you and ask for your PIN number, for you to give your card to a courier, or for you to transfer your money to another account. If you get a call like this, don’t panic, hang up and then call or visit your bank directly. •5 If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is! Ignore letters, emails or phone calls offering a brilliant investment. Ignore these offers and never reply - it shows your details are active which will encourage scammers to contact you again. Contact the Mailing Preference Service on 0845 703 4599 to have your name taken off UK direct mailing lists to help stop some junk mail. •6 Stay safe online If you use a computer, don’t open emails or attachments from people you don’t know. Make sure your computer has upto-date anti-virus software and ignore any phone calls that say your computer has a problem or a virus, as this is a scam. •7 Be aware of new pension scams Now that people have more freedom to access their pension cash, fraudsters have developed new scams to trick people out of their retirement savings. The FCA lists current scams at www.fca.gov.uk/ scamsmart. Be cautious of anyone that claims to know about loopholes, talks about overseas investments or says you can get your money before age 55. Make sure you get independent advice before making any decisions. Visit the Government’s Pension Wise website for free and impartial guidance on your pension options. •8 Stop nuisance calls and mail scams If you are receiving lots of nuisance calls

or mail scams then there are ways to help reduce these unwelcome intrusions. Some phones have call blocking features to stop unwanted calls. If your phone doesn’t, you can use a separate call blocker. Some blockers come pre-programmed with known nuisance numbers and some allow you to add numbers to that list when you get a nuisance or scam call. You can buy call blockers from various retailers and some local authorities provide them. Joining the free Telephone Preference Service (TPS) should help reduce the number of cold calls you receive, although it won’t necessarily block scammers. TPS has a service to stop cold calls to mobile phones too. Text ‘TPS’ and your email address to 85095 to register. Registering with the free Mailing Preference Service will stop many direct-mailing companies from contacting you and reduce the amount of post you receive. However, this may not stop all scams, as many fraudsters ignore this. Be cautious when giving your address out. •9 Report it Anyone can be taken in by a scam, so don’t feel embarrassed or ashamed if it happens to you. If you think you’ve been scammed, or you’ve spotted a scam contact Action Fraud on 0300 123 2040 to report it and get help. Older people and their families can also find advice on Age UK’s website. Covering key areas such as pension scams, nuisance calls, doorstep crimes, investment schemes and online scams, people looking for advice can visit: www. ageuk.org.uk/scams Here they can also find links to copies of Age UK’s free, downloadable guides Avoiding scams, Staying safe and Internet security. People looking for advice can call Age UK’s free national Advice Line 365 days a year from 8am - 7pm on 0800 169 65 65.

AGE UK’S RESPONSE TO THE BBC’S DECISION For over a million of the oldest people in our country, television is their main form of company. Right now, that’s under threat. Sign our petition to save free TV for older people. The BBC has announced they plan to means-test TV licences for the over 75s. That means they’ll only be free for people receiving Pension Credit. We believe this change will harm millions of older people who rely on their TV. Together, we must demand the Government takes back responsibility for funding free TV licences. Why means testing isn’t the answer Many people who are most in need of a free TV licence would lose it under a means-tested system. The most in need often miss out. Under new plans, only older people who receive a benefit called Pension Credit will receive a free TV licence. But two fifths of people who are entitled to this benefit – about 1.2 million pensioners – aren’t getting it. Some don’t know they can claim, many struggle to apply and lots more feel embarrassed about needing help. These people are some of the poorest in our society. People who are barely scraping by will suffer. Lots of older people have struggled throughout their working life to save a little extra for retirement. But that small

pot of savings for a rainy day means they don’t qualify for means-tested benefits. Others are coping with the costs of illhealth or disability. Taking their free TV licence away is a cruel blow. What can we do to keep TV licences free for the over 75s? We must demand the Government takes back responsibility for keeping TV free for the oldest people in our society. Because it’s not just a licence. It’s a lifeline. How will older people be affected? • Removing older people’s access to TV would be an unthinkably cruel blow when many are already facing huge challenges. . • Half of all over 75s are living with a disability, and many rely on their TV for companionship and entertainment. • For those who don’t have the internet, TV lets them stay up to date with what’s happening in the world. Nearly a third of over 75s are living in poverty or just above the poverty line. Paying a hefty extra bill would simply be impossible when they’re barely scraping by as it is. • Our research shows that more than 2 million over 75s will have to go without TV or cut back on heating and food if free TV licences were scrapped. “I have had a stroke and I am housebound. TV is my main pleasure. Don’t do this to us please.” What older people are telling us

DAVID WALLIAMS’ GRANDPA’S GREAT ESCAPE LIVE IN SHEFFIELD FlyDSA Arena Sunday 29th December 2019 Due to phenomenal ticket sales a third performance of Grandpa’s Great Escape has just been added. The live version of the kids’ favourite, which has sold over two million copies around the world, will be stopping off in Sheffield for three performances at the FlyDSA Arena in the venue’s theatre style Steel Hall setting on Sunday 29th December 2019 at 1pm, 4pm & 7pm. Tickets for all performances are priced £52.35, £41.15 & £29.95 (including fees) and on sale now. It has also just been announced that actor & comedian Nigel Planner will star as Grandpa in the first ever stage adaptation of Grandpa’s Great Escape, the exhilarating number one bestselling children’s book by actor and comedian David Walliams, is to tour UK arenas this Christmas 2019.

Best known for playing Neil in the much loved BBC2 cult comedy The Young Ones, Nigel has worked extensively in TV, film and radio throughout his illustrious 40-year career. He is also certainly no stranger to the stage, with theatre credits including Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Hairspray, Chicago, Wicked and We Will Rock You. Nigel Planer said: “It’s a great honour to be asked to play Grandpa in the live version of this amazing and cockle-warming story by David Walliams. It’s set to be such an amazing spectacular and I can’t wait to drive a tank and fly a life-size Spitfire over audiences around the country!” Grandpa’s Great Escape Live follows the acclaimed television film which aired on BBC One in December 2018, and will be directed by Tony® Award nominee Sean Foley (The Catherine Tate Show Live & The Painkiller). Grandpa’s Great Escape is the eighth book by Walliams and was published in September 2015 by HarperCollins Children’s Books David Walliams said: “Grandpa’s Great Escape Live is an incredible new development for the book. We’re not just turning it into a live show, but into a spectacular live arena show for all the family this Christmas. Being in arenas means we can have a life-size Spitfire, a tank, the London landscape and a dramatic escape from the Imperial War Museum. It’s great because we can really go to town with all of those elements and this story demands that scale. I’m delighted to be involved with this

arena tour of Grandpa’s Great Escape Live, working with fantastic people like the director Sean Foley and Kevin Cecil, who’s written the script. I couldn’t be more excited about it!” The wonderous stage design for Grandpa’s Great Escape Live will see arenas around the UK transformed into London and its landmarks, including Buckingham Palace and the River Thames, from thousands of feet in the sky, as Grandpa’s life size Spitfire soars through the air. The set has been created by entertainment architects Stufish Productions (Beyonce & Jay Z, Madonna, The Rolling Stones). The script adaptation of the book has been written by Kevin Cecil (Little Britain & Gangsta Granny television film). Grandpa’s Great Escape, which has been

translated into 39 languages received a wealth of glowing reviews with the Evening Standard declaring Walliams as “the new Roald Dahl”, while The Times describe the story as “a beguilingly funny, original and thoughtprovoking tale… hilarious”. Many years ago, Grandpa was a World War II flying ace. But when he is sent to old folk’s home Twilight Towers – run by sinister Matron Swine – it’s up to Grandpa and his grandson, Jack, to plot a daring escape. Little do they know the wicked matron is on to them. Tickets for 3 performances of Grandpa’s Great Escape at the FlyDSA Arena priced £52.35, £41.15 & £29.95 (including fees) and are on sale now, available online at www.flydsaarena. co.uk or by phone on 0114 256 56 56.

ANGLER’S CORNER

with Clint Walker

After A better session at my favourite water, Rode Pool last week, I returned once more to the water which is giving me all kinds of problems, the main one being that I can’t seem to catch anything! It’s an urban venue which perplexes and one on which I feel a little apprehensive as it has such a historically poor reputation for theft and assaults, but it contains some huge tench and I ventured forth once more. Four biteless hours later, I returned to the van… I had fished it properly, introducing a classic tench mix on a little and often basis, and fining down my tackle in an attempt to elicit a bite, but to no avail. My only saving grace is that no-one else caught either. My time wasn’t completely wasted though, I enjoyed a nice chat with a local nature photographer who happened upon me, and whilst we chatted, we watched sparrows taking damselflies on the wing, grebes hunting, kingfishers flitting and a wide variety of other nature which as anglers, we often don’t appreciate. I enjoy intelligent conversation with other venue users, but you don’t always get it… After that, it was on to Rode pool once more, a short session prior to a station pick up. Last week, I’d noted that I was missing some bites and wanted to see if I could remedy the issue. I thought it was perhaps bream to blame, but wanted to find out more… I usually fish with fairly heavy method feeders, lines backleaded, and rods on a pod, so this week I fished a single quivertip rod, a much lighter feeder, and I changed my bait from a light mix to a much darker one which I hoped wouldn’t spook fish in the shallow water. The Dark Super Blend from Spotted Fin is more of a carrier than an attractor, but the black colouration is perfect for blending in on silty estate lakes such as Rode Pool, and with addition of chopped worm, dead maggots, a handful of mini-pellets and a splash of liquid food, it is perfect for a stealthy tench attack. I used a small flatbed feeder with just enough weight to be able to cast the fifty odd yards to the far bank lilies, added a short hooklink and on the hair, slipped

two broken sections of worm over the bayonet. The feeder was packed with goodies, then flung out to the clip landing just a few feet away from the far bank; perfect. Although Rode Pool has the rewards, it pays to be patient. I’ve taken advice from the great and the good, so rarely put in any free offerings at all, preferring to wait until the fish find the feeder. When the fish are hungry, bites can be expected fairly quickly, but it’s not unusual to wait for an hour between indications, so as always, the kettle went on… Thirty minutes passed, then the ‘tip flew around as a fish snapped up the worm. I lifted the rod high to pick up line and glanced across at the far bank to see a hefty bream wallow on the surface. That was as exciting as it got, the bream surrendered immediately and slipped almost gratefully into the waiting net. I weighed it. It looked like a nice fish, so when the needle spun around to 6lb 10oz I was pleased with such a fine slab which proved to be the first of a trio of similar sized fish during the morning. The bites were confident though; I hadn’t proved whether the bait robbers of the previous session were indeed bream, so I swapped to the superb Spotted Fin 8mm wafters, one of the mainstays of my angling over the last couple of seasons. I know they work at Rode Pool and wanted to see if the missed bites happened again with the same bait. In the margins, freshwater mussels moved ponderously across the lake bed. I hadn’t really seen them moving before, only noting mazy trails in soft silt previously, so watched with some fascination. Out of the corner of my eye, a fast flick of the quivertip got my attention and as I watched, it moved again so I swept the rod aloft. A small kick at the other end told of contact, and despite the smaller size of the fish, it fought frantically to evade the net. It was a roach, a fine silvery fish of around 12oz, and it dawned on me that these may have been the culprits which had caused the missed bites as they felt the

BILLY RETURNS TO FOOTBALLING ROOTS Billy Sharp recently returned to his football roots by playing in a charity match aimed at raising money to help Middlewood Rovers fund a new clubhouse. The Blades skipper returned to his childhood roots at Waverley Lane, Handsworth and helped formed an under 33s squad, having contacted former players from his age group. Sharp was on the winning side but it was more about showcasing the importance of grassroots football for

United's number ten, as he looked to help return the favours the club gave him in his early playing days. Sharp remarked: "I started in the U8s at Middlewood and worked my way up through the age groups before moving to Rotherham United's School of Excellence. "I'll always be grateful for the help and support I received while at Middlewood and when I found out they needed help I was more than happy to lend a hand. "It was fantastic to get my old team mates together for a reunion and to help the club out, as I've remained passionate about grassroots football. I have two sons and I'm keen for them to play at this level. "Middlewood have been great to me and they also support my charity foundation." Sharp's father, Steve added: "Billy was actually playing

tension of the back lead and dropped the bait. Over the next hour, a few more fish, some approaching the pound mark tripped up and I was having fun again. Then it went quiet as the skies darkened, the wind changed, and the temperature plummeted as big fat spots of rain started to fall… I had only one more bite. As I absent mindedly looked at the line where it entered the water, it suddenly tore off as though I’d picked up a water skier, and the rod almost flew off the rest as another decent fish tried to escape. This time it was a tench, a nice fish of about 4lb and it bought the visit to a timely end. In four hours, I’d banked three quality bream, half a dozen quality roach and a solitary tench which constitutes a good haul on Rode, so left happily to make my way to the train station. I’m not sure I’ve identified the missed bites offender

(although I strongly suspect the roach are to blame) but I have discovered yet another enjoyable way to approach one of my favourite waters and it’s much more fun than sitting behind alarms! Returning to the subject of intelligent conversation though, I had another exchange this week with ‘an acquaintance’ who messaged to tell me that he had caught a previously uncaught carp. I love this myth, it’s one I’ve heard before, so knew exactly how to respond. ‘How did you know it was uncaught?’ I asked… His reply, “The mouth curtain was in place!” ‘Hmm… did you return it with the mouth curtain in place?’ Without hesitation, he confirmed that he had… I hope he catches it again…just so he can think about it…
