SHEFFIELD ARMED FORCES & VETERANS DAY THIS WEEKEND Join the Lord Mayor of Sheffield, Cllr Tony Downing, Sheffield Armed Forces and Veterans to celebrate with a series of activities this weekend on Saturday 22nd June.

Armed Forces and Veterans Day honours the outstanding contribution made by current members of the armed forces and by veterans of all ages. The day is an opportunity for us all to join together to pay tribute to our armed forces past, present and future.

This year’s event marks the 75th anniversary of D-Day and 100 years since the signing of the Treaty Of Versailles and provides a poignant opportunity to commemorate the service and sacrifice of those who

lost or risked their lives, to reflect upon the human cost of conflict and to have hope for a more peaceful world.

Show your support for our Sheffield veterans, cadets and armed military organisations as they parade from Norfolk Row from 11:50am, up Fargate, past the Town Hall to the Peace Gardens. The Lord Mayor will then lead a short ceremony at 12 Noon to thank those involved and to mark the occasion.

The parade and ceremony will have musical accompaniment from Woodhouse Brass Band.

From 12:20pm you can dance up a storm in the Peace Gardens with the Ashby Big Band. While away the afternoon with

music from one of the best Glenn Miller/Swing When You’re Winning tribute bands. They are a fantastic swing orchestra using the classic big band formation of Saxes, Brass and Rhythm Section.

Then at 1:10pm the wonderful Lorrie Brown returns to the Peace Gardens stage with her tribute to the Forces Sweetheart, Dame Vera Lynn. Award winning tribute artist Lorrie brings us the beautiful and melodic tones of Vera Lynn in this fantastic homage.

You can also see displays and find out more about cadets and armed forces between 11.00am and 3.00pm Join Armed Forcrs Day at the Peace Gardens and

Millennium Square to see our armed forces and reserve services as they show off their skills and offer you the opportunity to join in.

A DOUBLE HEADLINE BILL OF FOLK ROCK, CONTEMPORARY & MORE AT CAST THEATRE Doncaster’s own local music promotor and radio man Jonti Willis presents another in his series of powerful double-header music nights at The Cast Theatre.

On Wednesday 19th June the mix will be heartfelt folk-rock and eclectic, contemporary folk as the Jon Strong band and legendary singersongwriter Charlie Dore take to the stage in a concert of two brilliant halves.

“One of the tightest three-piece bands on the scene”, the Jon Strong Band has achieved much critical acclaim over the years. Jon himself has toured consistently throughout Europe and the UK over the past 17 years with the likes of Ry Cooder, Van Morrison and Talk Talk, with songs driven by subject as diverse as UK politics, recession in the NE of England and the dangers of promiscuity.

Multi-award winning

singer-songwriter Charlie Dore will be joined by her longtime co-pilot Julian Littman of Steeleye Span. Expect songs from latest album Dark Matter and favourites from her previous 6 albums as well as stories and original acoustic versions of platinum selling hits she has written for others, including George Harrison and Jimmy Nail. And there’s always a possibility of a new

angle on her own song, Pilot of the Airwaves - still a national radio favourite.

Jon and Charlie first met when they were on the bill at Hawick Festival in 2018 and immediately struck up a bond.

This Saturday, 22nd June, Lorrie Brown, the UK No.1 Vera Lynn tribute, will be performing her show as part of the parade for the Armed Forces and Veterans Day event in Sheffield Town Centre at The Peace Gardens.

Lorrie, who is from Sheffield, is looking forward to returning to the Peace Gardens, after performing in the event last year. She says, ‘It’s so special to be performing in my home town, I spend a lot of time in the centre anyway and am a big fan of Sheffield Market, so to be returning to the peace gardens again is a big thrill.

Lorrie had another thrill this week when she received a 2nd message from the lady she portrays in her show. Dame Vera Lynn has sent a message of support thanking her for keeping the memory of the era alive.

Lorrie said, ‘It was such a surprise and such an honour to receive the message, to know that Dame Vera herself is taking an interest in the work we are doing is amazing.’

Lorrie is well known in the South Yorkshire area, regularly performing at several local hotels with her lunchtime tribute shows and has made several appearances at the City Hall. In 2017 during the tour of ‘Sincerely Yours. The

Vera Lynn Story’ the then Lord Mayor, Cllr Anne Murphy attended the show, which was the final performance after a 50 date tour of the UK celebrating the 100th birthday of the forces sweetheart.

During the tour, Lorrie raised £10,000 for the Dame Vera Lynn Childrens Charity, who then made her an ambassador of the charity.

Earlier this year, she was also awarded a ‘Marti Caine Women of Sheffield Award’ for her work in the entertainment field, from the Sheffield Star for her part in raising the charity money.

Lorrie says, ‘That was a great honour, to be recognised by my home town for the job that I do. Its something I am very proud of,’

THE FRINGE AT TRAMLINES RETURNS FOR SECOND YEAR

A huge range of music and entertainment set for the city centre over the Tramlines weekend ‘The Fringe at Tramlines’ returns for a second year on Sat 20 July and Sun 21 July 2019 following a successful launch in 2018. Sheffield City Council and Sheffield BID, have created this brand with the backing of Tramlines Festival, allowing revellers easy access to information on the many events happening across the city over the Tramlines weekend. Highlights include free outdoor entertainment at The Fringe Stage at Devonshire Green, an 80s/90s disco at The Peace Gardens, Street Performers in Barker’s Pool, a traditional funfair on Fargate and dozens of pubs, clubs and venues across the city featuring bands, DJs and performers over the Tramlines weekend.

‘The Fringe Stage’ at Devonshire Green has been programmed by Papa Al, of the JuJu Club (originally a Sheffield club night with live music from around the world). The Fringe Stage will represent the best ‘made in Sheffield’ acts with some international additions. Highlights on Saturday 20 July include the big, brassy sound of Jungle Lion, the outlandish antics of Latin music lovers Mango Rescue Team and homegrown rap talent from Medley. Sunday is more of a singalong day with artists performing well known tracks. This will include a 20 strong brass band, The Tin Soldiers and the funk and soulful stylings of Son Montuno and Papa Soul. Sunday is headlined well regarded cover act, Highway Child whilst another highlight will be the One World Choir who are comprised of Sheffield based asylum seekers and refugees.

The Peace Gardens will be completely transformed over the Tramlines weekend and will include licensed bars and food outlets with an 80s/90s disco, a helter skelter, and plenty of deckchairs. There will also be an exciting range of food traders providing the perfect spot to enjoy the Tramlines weekend.

Barker’s Pool will play host to some of the

best street entertainers on the UK circuit as Professor Vanessa and The University of Sheffield will once again bring a two day (Friday and Saturday) programme of great street entertainers featuring acts that regularly perform at Covent Gardens and Glastonbury. This years line-up is also supported by Orchard square in includes (amongst others) George Orange from Chicago, The Comedy Waiters and the infamous Granny Turismo. In addition to performing in Barker’s Pool, some entertainers will roam the streets of the city centre, helping to create the unique ‘festival feel’ of Sheffield over the weekend.

Along with the outdoor activities mentioned above, almost every pub, bar and venue across the city will be programming bands, DJs and live acts as they have done since the launch of Tramlines Festival in 2009. Full details of this including line-ups and set times will be made available via the Fringe website hosted by

carers face financial struggles BMA responds Carers Week is an annual campaign designed to highlight the challenges that unpaid carers face but also to recognise the immense contribution they make to looking after people in the UK with debilitating conditions.

Carers Week also hosts multiple events up and down the country designed to bring carers together to help them socialise and access much-needed support. Highlighted in this is that Carers in the UK looking after loved ones with Dementia are facing increasing financial strain. Those caring for a loved one with Dementia are often amongst those carers facing challenging circumstances and there are lots of them.

Figures from Alzheimer’s Research UK indicate that there are 850,000 people in the UK with dementia. With just 59,000 people receiving ongoing care from the NHS, this continues to put pressure on loved ones to provide care. Data from Carers.org shows that there are 670,000 unpaid carers looking after people with dementia in the UK. One-fifth of these carers has given up work completely, equating to 134,000 people nationally.

Carers in the UK receive just £64.60 in allowance from the Government each week. Someone who had gone from earning an average UK wage to this level would find themselves £23,576 worse off each year. To be eligible for Carers’ Allowance a carer must be looking after someone for at least 35 hours per week and receiving this benefit can affect their ability to access others. However, the difficulties that carers face aren’t just financial. Their own physical and mental health can be impacted by their caring role. 288,100 carers have reported feeling depressed and 395,300 continue to suffer from stress due to the ongoing care of loved ones.

Caring responsibilities can also leave people feeling socially isolated, with 259,290 carers reporting that they have little social contact with others due to their ongoing caring responsibilities. People in a caring role can also feel isolated from their own families if they are reluctant to confront loved ones care needs or the full extent of their illness. Sarah McEwan, Head of Resource and Development at Cera Care said “Family members acting as carers can struggle to make ends meet, can face mental health issues and feelings of isolation. It’s vital that society recognises the huge contribution that unpaid carers make and celebrates the amazing work that these people do.

We want to highlight this and to start a conversation about how carers can be helped to access the support they need and lead fulfilling lives whilst providing care to loved ones.”Dementia specifically is set to continue to be a challenge for those providing unpaid care as the number of people living with Dementia continues to increase. The number of people with dementia in the UK is forecast to reach over 1 million by 2025 and over 2 million by 2051, whilst around 32% of people born each year since 2015 will go on to develop dementia.

• There are around 134,000 people who have given up work to care for a loved one with dementia • Those that do so will lose almost £24,000 a year in wages • This totals over £60million in lost wages every week throughout the UK • Ongoing unpaid dementia care duties have left over 288,100 people feeling depressed and 395,300 suffering from stress

Responding to the latest NHS performance figures, which show waiting lists growing to the highest levels since records began and cancer patients experiencing record-long waits for treatment, BMA consultants committee chair Dr Rob Harwood said: “This latest set of NHS figures show a health service descending into an everdeepening crisis and closer to a system unfit for purpose. Across the board, hospital, general practice and community services are struggling to cope and these statistics should serve as a major red flag of the need for urgent investment to reach the frontline. Medical and support staff are continuing to do their best for patients but without immediate investment, those efforts will not be enough to guarantee safe, effective care. With waiting lists growing to the highest levels since records began; rising over 5 percent in the last year, and nowhere near the requisite number of patients being treated within 18 weeks; at just over 86 percent - the worst performance since January 2009 – the NHS is in a dire situation.

For cancer patients, it’s even worse. Despite the BMA warning over a month ago of the crisis in cancer care, it is extremely concerning that we are continuing to see a rising trend in the number of patients forced to wait over two weeks to see a cancer specialist after their GP referral, further adding to their distress. The Government must get an urgent grip on the crisis that is continuing to unfold in the NHS. Clearly, when each set of monthly figures presents worse than the last, there is a real need for a drastic change in how we are delivering care for patients.”

This is worse than every generation before them in living memory.

But what these figures don’t reveal are the millions living with crushed confidence from the shame of their illiteracy.

Through a 4-month process of intensive experiences to shed their shame and

accelerate their learning, we’ll aim to take a group who are lacking the literacy skills necessary for many everyday situations and transform their abilities, enabling them to live fuller lives.

Living in an age of economic austerity, this documentary subject could not be more poignant.

We aim to lift the stigma of adult illiteracy and deliver an empowering, positive, and uplifting series that will capture the hearts of the nation.

MUD, WET & BEERS LIVE REVIEW DOWNLOAD FESTIVAL, FRIDAY 2019 Words & Picture by Roy Goodall

MUD. WET. And rain! Small words that any farmer can relate to, followed very quickly by rock fans attending a gathering in a field, namely Download 2019. Oh yes! Friday wasn’t great by any stretch though it has been worse with many bands spread over four stages and thousands of loyal customers.

Flicking stages is the game with Skid Row being the first to catch our eye who naturally played old and new favourites as did Tesla, Little Suzi being a favourite. Having never seen Blackberry Smoke it was good to spend time catching their tunes. Strong start it may have been though they did level out somewhat as their set advanced. We even had a slice of Come Together by The Beatles, which was apt considering. Dressed all in black with a plain black backdrop wasn’t the best idea but they did well.

Delain hit the Zippo Encore Stage with gusto as female front woman Charlotte Wessels took charge.

Their tunes had a strong heavy European feel, which comes as no surprise as they hail from Holland.

Talented musicians who were colourful, powerful and respectful. Current album Hunter’s Moon was mentioned with new single Master’s Of Destiny going down well. Another viewing early next year is on the cards…

Clutch are familiar and did good with their catchy hit Electric Worries ending their set, thus prompting me to buy an album, as I will with Delain. Whitesnake once used to delight the senses with bluesy soulful

hard rock tunes, now sadly not as prevalent, plugged their latest product, Flesh and Blood. Front man David Coverdale still screamed and swore his way through their crowd filling set. Slow and Easy was good, though guitar and drum solos don’t float my boat anymore as newer and older songs could’ve filled the void. Eagles Of Death Metal played strong material dragging a great throng with them. Again, a first time viewing which the masses enjoyed with Slash on the Main Stage also dragging large crowds.

Miles Kennedy’s powerful voice delivered and the gang managed to miss most of the rain.

Rob Zombie, who headlined the Zippo platform, really was a big draw. Lots of colour and theatrics with big numbers coming early, namely Superbeast, Living Dead Girl, and More Human from his White Zombie days. Another Beatles classic, Helter Skelter, brought cheers and silly banter from Rob aside, overall they got top marks from me.

Main Stage top honours went to Sheffield’s favourite band Def Leppard. Strange choice it may have been as we’d only seen them last year. This was the same show basically, a celebration of Hysteria in its entirety so no different really. Still, if I was in their shoes I guess I’d have said ‘yes’ to a fourth appearance. With Vivian Campbell completing his second gig of the day and Joe Elliott sporting a shorter hair do they once again pulled it off with lights, songs and panache.

So, yes it was muddy, wet, we had overpriced and lengthy bar and merchandise queues but sadly this is normal for these types of events. On a plus note, depending on your standing spot, I felt the sound was good and out of the 109 bands I have found some new friends to check out.

ANGLER’S CORNER

Can you remember the moment you hooked your first ‘big’ fish? I can, and although it is now almost forty years ago, I recall it with remarkable clarity - I can even tell you what day it was!

It was a Wednesday, a Wednesday evening to be precise and it was almost time to pack up and go home as the bats started to swirl overhead, the nighttime darkness crept up on us and the lights of the nearby cement works grew brighter in the dusk. I was with my dad; my dad who detested fishing and hated it even more because the cement works pools where we sat was his daily place of work. I’d pestered him as soon as he got in from his day on the bulldozer, and after wolfing down his tea he promised to sit with me for a couple of hours just to keep me quiet. He knew nothing about fishing, I knew nothing about fishing, but I’d taken it up and was determined to master it…

I’m still trying…

We had parked ourselves on the Big Lagoon as the largest of three adjacent waters was called, me on my creaky wicker creel, my dad on one of the ubiquitous orange, green and black striped deckchairs of the early 1980’s which every family seemed to own, and in my hands, I held a white fibreglass rod of eight feet in length. At it’s base, completely inappropriately, a Diawa centrepin loaded with mono of dubious strength. A float had suspended my maggots motionless for all but the last ten minutes of our visit with not a tremor to test me and my dad was getting bored, itching to get back into the Cortina for the quick drive home to catch Playhouse on the television.

He had spotted a carp mooching about in the reeds in the nearby margins, so desperate to prove his manly stealth, crept forward on his belly, parted the reeds, and flicked in some lumps of bread to see if the behemoth was hungry. It was. An orange pair of rubbery lips slurped the offering of crusty Sunblest down, and quickly returned for more… Commando style, my dad backed away from the water’s edge, and with a determined look in his eye, ordered me to retrieve the float, cut off all the end tackle and tie on only my biggest hook. I did so, selecting what I recall being a size eight and after reading a piece about surface fishing in the Angling Times, manoeuvred the hook point through a piece of crust so that it would be craftily positioned atop the bait.

From my vantage point further around the

bank, I couldn’t see the carp as it moved along the reed line, so dad crept forward once more with my line between his fingertips. Spotting the dark back of the fish as it approached, he flicked the bread crust beyond it and ordered to me wind in; “…slowly!” I did as he demanded and gently winched in the bread until it was a few feet from the lazy snout of the carp which had continued to mop up bits of loaf. My dad whispered; “I’ll tell you when to strike…” and we both sat motionless in the gathering gloom.

The tension was oppressive; the 11 year old me hardly daring to breathe in case I ruined our first chance of a ‘proper’ capture, or incurred the disappointment of my dad, but after a minute or so, a roar of “STRIKE!” jolted me from my breathless quiet and I swept the rod up as hard as I could, determined to set the hook and play out my own version of the Old Man and The Sea as told by Hemingway…

Instead of spending the next few hours attached to a tugging monster however, my excitement was extremely short lived. In my head, the descriptive prose of Hemingway had already been changed to suit the warm summer evening by a pond in the midst of a cement works, but the reality was starkly different. No sooner had I been paternally commanded to do battle, than I whipped the rod up, clamped my hand firmly over the spinning drum on my reel and set about dragging the beast from its lair.

The white fibreglass rod took a tremendous curve, the line quivered and sang as it angled over the turned wire eyes of the blank, and then it was gone… the line parted within a few seconds, the rod sprang straight, and my dad held his hand to his brow… I’d lost it. The physics of fishing hadn’t been understood, I’d left the fish no option but to pull back hard, and it had easily broken my flimsy tackle. I was distraught, dumbfounded and delirious in equal measure; had I really just been engaged with such a fish? Even for a scant few seconds? I had, and it was that fish which got me hooked…

The funny thing is, I never even saw it. My dad had been the one to identify the target, and guide the bait on to the spot, all I had done was lift the rod, then lose the fish. I saw nothing but a rapidly expanding ring of violent ripples where the fish had turned and headed straight down, but it didn’t matter. The enigma familiar to every fisherman had been sampled, the thrill of the chase enjoyed and never ending ‘what if?’ had been discovered… I was now an angler, and there was nothing going to get in my way in the quest to carry on. I eventually grew old enough to travel to the water alone,

Barry Bannan is excited for the new campaign and believes experienced boss Steve Bruce is the right man to lead the Owls into 2019/20.

and spent many happy hours getting to grips with the seemingly endless number of top tips given every week in the Angling Times, and trying my hardest to improve my miserable skills and do you know what? I caught a few too…it was here that I cut my angling teeth, and here that it all began…

Since then, over the next thirty-eight years, much water has gone under the bridge, but my enjoyment of angling has rarely waned. I still get excited about the chase, the strategies employed, the luck, and the outdoors, and even now, I’m often sleepless the night before going fishing. My dad still detests it though, still asks me if I’m going to eat it when I show him a picture of my latest catch, and still
