LOCALS ENCOURAGED TO WATER YOUNG TREES THIS SUMMER Labels are being fixed to newlyplanted street trees across the city next week encouraging local people to help water them during dry weather. Despite the recent rainfall we had a relatively dry spring, so watering young trees regularly ensures they have the best chance of establishing. The city’s street
tree stock is being managed and maintained by Amey over a 25-year period as part of the Streets Ahead contract. Melissa Wise, Project Director of Operational Services at Amey says: “It’s really important that we do all we can to safeguard the trees we’ve planted across the city. The most critical element is to keep them well
watered while they adjust to their new surroundings. “As part of our programme, we water trees as much as we can, but if the weather gets warmer and drier, especially over the summer months, it would be great if local people helped out by giving them extra water, whenever possible. “Many other local authorities across the
country are following similar initiatives to ensure young street trees get the best start in life. “We would suggest people use tap or rain water but avoid contaminated water that may include harmful chemicals. Ideally, try to give a tree at least 20 litres per watering – although anything you can manage is great.” Sheffield is home to
around 4.5 million trees and 36,000 of these are street trees. Advice on watering young trees can be found at: www.rhs. org.uk/advice/

As Vicky McClure says in BBC1’s My Dementia Choir – “Life doesn’t end with a dementia diagnosis”. darts (Doncaster Community Arts) runs a music and storytelling-based group to encourage adults living with dementia, and their carers, to take part in creative activities. This welcoming and social group, called In the Moment, is led by a range of professional musicians and wordsmiths including Ian McMillan, one of the UK’s best-known contemporary poets. Dementia and loss of memory can be lonely and isolating and darts invites you to come along to The Point, make friends, have fun and feel better. In the Moment takes place on the 2nd and 4th Mondays of the month from 1.30pm – 3.30pm. All sessions are free. The Point, 16 South Parade, Doncaster DN1 2DR. The group is part of a wider programme People from across South Yorkshire of dementia-friendly culture with Cast, are being asked for their views on Heritage Doncaster and Home Instead buses, which will be used to inform an independent review announced by Mayor Doncaster (the full programme is at www. inthemomentdoncaster.co.uk) funded by Dan Jarvis earlier this year. He said: “I know buses are a lifeline for communities Arts Council England and support from Public Health (Doncaster Council) as across South Yorkshire. But at the same part of its strategy in promoting dementia time, over the last decade there has been awareness. an 18 per cent decrease in the number darts has been developing creative proof people using buses in our region. don’t be caught out by heating fraud - scams awarenesss 2019 Households in South Yorkshire are urged to be vigilant when having work done to their heating system to avoid falling victim to non-qualified technicians or dishonest pricing tactics. The call comes as part of Scams Awareness 2019, a national campaign which aims to raise awareness of the types of fraud taking place and what individuals and families can do to protect themselves. A recent survey revealed that over 3,648 UK households fell victim to a scam in 2018, a 12% increase from the previous year*. The most common scams included bank and credit card, consumer and retail fraud. In response OFTEC, which represents the oil heating industry, has joined the Citizens Advice Scams Awareness campaign to provide local households with guidance on how to ensure a technician they employ is professionally qualified.
Look For The Badge!
The advice includes: • Look out for the badge’ - ask to see an official ID badge which proves their professional credentials and double check with their professional registration body • Get multiple written quotes for the work and be cautious of saying yes to significantly cheaper options – this can sometimes be a warning sign • Ask about previous work they have done, what types of heating systems they are qualified to service and check for online reviews and recommendations • Keep a paper trail and make sure you double-check any agreements before signing • If you have concerns, speak with a family member, friend or contact OFTEC (for oil heating) or GasSafe (for mains gas) for advice Malcolm Farrow, from OFTEC commented: “As we start to use our heating less during the warmer summer months it’s a popular time to have the system serviced, replaced or upgraded. Many of the 7000 oil heated homes in South Yorkshire will be looking for a technician to carry out this work but remember, it’s vital to ensure you hire a qualified professional to avoid potentially being left with a broken or unsafe system which is expensive to repair.” Households looking to employ a technician are advised to use a GasSafe (for mains gas) or OFTEC (for heating oil
or solid fuel) registered technician who has demonstrated their competence and undergone industry recognised training to ensure the work is completed safely and to a high standard. “It’s also important to look out for older and often more vulnerable relatives and friends, supporting them in any decisionmaking when contracting a professional and ensuring they are not harassed by repeat visits from unwanted callers as this can have a significant impact on their financial and emotional wellbeing.” To find your nearest OFTEC registered technician, visit www.oftec.org. 1 IN 5 OVERS 50S IN YORKSHIRE AND THE HUMBER THINK ABOUT CUTTING BACK ON ALCOHOL, RESEARCH REVEALS More than 4 million Britons over 50 think they should cut back on the amount of alcohol they drink, according to research from campaign group Drink Wise, Age Well. A national survey of 2,120 over 50s found 20% of those in Yorkshire and the Humber sometimes think they should cut down compared with 12% in the East of England and 17% nationally. In the UK, harmful drinking is declining among every age group except the over 50s. Yet when asked if younger people have a healthier attitude towards alcohol, 56% of over 50s in Yorkshire and the Humber disagree and the majority said 18-29 year olds were most likely to experience negative consequences due to alcohol. Data from the Office for National Statistics shows people over 45 are most likely to drink at hazardous levels, while younger generations are drinking less. The number of alcohol related deaths for over 50s has risen 45% since 2001 and Public Health data shows that alcohol is now the sixth biggest cause of disability among people in their 50s and 60s, up from 16th in 1990. In addition, the survey found that while 48% of over 50s in Yorkshire and the Humber agree it’s easy to get into the habit of drinking more alcohol as you get older, 51% also don’t think they drink too much and only 12% think they drink more now than they did 10 years ago - the lowest of all regions in the UK. When asked what is the biggest barrier to seeking help, 47% of over 50s in the region said they don’t want to change their behaviour. The survey coincides with the publication of Calling Time for Change, a charter for politicians and policy makers about how to reduce alcohol harm among people over 50. The charter was co-designed with people and families affected by alcohol problems and experts in alcohol and ageing.
Recommendations for policy makers in the charter include: • Department of Health and Social Care to ensure the needs of our ageing population are recognised with tailored solutions in the forthcoming Alcohol Strategy • Targeted campaigns to help older adults and their families to understand how life events like bereavement or retirement can lead to increased alcohol use, and how alcohol can affect healthy ageing • Alcohol services to be designed in a way that makes them accessible and welcome for older adults • Workplaces to promote alcohol-free social events and wellbeing activities to ensure an inclusive and healthier working environment Julie Breslin, Head of Drink Wise, Age Well said: “For some of us, getting older brings challenges. Big life events like retirement, poor health, and bereavement can leave us feeling lonely and isolated. It’s easy to fall into the habit of drinking more, and it often works at first. But over time, the problems mount up. We’re now seeing these problems flashing red in public health data. Too many older people in Britain are dying earlier and losing healthy years from alcohol-related problems. The good news is it’s entirely possible for people to change their relationship with alcohol and take charge of their health. We see it every day. But services urgently need to catch up. We need to design them in such a way that they feel welcoming to people over 50. At the moment we’re only reaching a tiny fraction of the people who could use some support.” She added: “About 80% of people who use our services are drinking at home. They’re often alone, they’re often not socialising. That’s why we offer group meetings, social activities, peer support, home visits and volunteering. We’ve also learned that older adults respond really well in peer settings where they can talk with people who they can relate to.” John Nelson, 58, who has had experience of alcohol problems and is a member of the Calling Time for Change group, said: “People within our group are living proof that the right support can achieve incredible results and also that by sharing our experiences we can encourage people to talk about the issues and access support.” Vince Brown, 55, said: “The beauty of the Drink Wise, Age Well programme is they're not anti-drinking, they aren't saying never have a drink - they're saying be aware of healthy drinking. There's nothing to stop you having a social drink. It's about not making it a habit, not letting it control you.”

LOST MURAL OF THE ‘PEOPLE’S REPUBLIC OF SOUTH YORKSHIRE’ FINALLY GETS MAINSTREAM ACCEPTANCE At nearly six metres long and two metres high it was never going to be easy to lose. And maybe that’s why the powers that be built a false wall to cover it completely when the politically charged Thatcher years made way for New Labour in Sheffield. But then it was lost completely for over a decade and it was only the quick thinking of a local arts centre that saved it from being destroyed. Last weekend the true modern masterpiece finally received the reverence it deserved when it was put on permanent display at Sheffield’s Millennium Galleries. ‘With Burning Patience’ – which took nearly two years to complete – was the work of Chilean brothers Sergio and Daniel Bustamante who were given asylum in Sheffield following the Pinochet Coup. The artists in exile completed the work as a thank you to the people of the city for giving them a future. The mural took a staggering six months of research before work even started and depicted political struggles down the decades. The jaw-dropping mural was unveiled – first time around - on Labour Day in 1987 in Sheffield Coordinating Centre Against Unemployment (SCCAU) on West Street with politicians and the media out in force to celebrate its installation. The painting became a symbol of hope as the city’s ruling Labour Group rallied against the Thatcher policies of the time before it disappeared.

FAMILY ENTERTAINMENT REACHES NEW HEIGHTS AT TRAMLINES FESTIVAL 2019 The Sheffield-based festival has expanded its family offer this year to include even more interactive fun and games that kids of all ages can enjoy, a mini beach, plus plenty of party DJs to keep the adults dancing all night. As the 11th edition of Tramlines Festival fast approaches, the captivating family friendly activity can now be revealed, as well as some new night time entertainment for the three-day event, taking place from Friday 19th – Sunday 21st July 2019 at Hillsborough Park in Sheffield. The hugely popular area for families and kids of all ages, Into the Trees will return with a jam packed programme featuring, by day, a pop-up cinema, woodland workshops, circus skills and in-
clusive art collectives, and new for 2019 – a mini beach and seaside themed stalls, kids comedy, magic shows, quirky poetry and animatronic dinosaurs. By night at Into The Trees, guests will be transported back to the 80s with a retro disco, house and world music, and an ultimate beach party making it an essential place to explore for the festival’s late stayers. Nestled once again in a place of natural beauty at Hillsborough Park and surrounded by magnificent trees with twinkling lights and eye popping decor, Into The Trees is the place to find tailored programming to entertain the kids and adults alike. It’s forest like feel will now feature the addition of a mini beach complete with deck chairs and seaside
theme stalls. New for Tramlines 2019 is The Flying Seagull Project, which through a series of weird and wacky shows is set to bring a sparkle of magic to the event. Either sit and watch or get involved with cacophony music sessions, a unicycle runway, pirates and princesses, quick and quirky quiz shows, kids comedy club, magic shows, and an end of day parade, all capturing the imagination and energy of everyone who takes part to create long lasting memories. Another new addition to this year's festival is Jurassic Partys who come with roarsome dinsoaur fun. They bring Sheffield’s one and only animatronic dinosaur Tricksy the famous cheeky T-Rex, and the only UK identical replica
of Blue, the velociraptor famously known in the Jurassic World films. Also debuting is ‘The Poet’ Jonny Heath who will be creating countless smiles, tears and laughter from poems and stories written on his typewriter. Returning for 2019 all weekend long is the popup cinema, screening family favourites and cult classics with a kids’ disco between films. Back by popular demand, the Responsible Fishing team will once again invite kids into their woodland workshop to create beautiful transient artworks, inspired by the natural landscape using foraged materials of whatever they can find nearby. This promises to be a relaxing space for visitors to reconnect with nature - with the added activity
LIVE AT THE PARAMOUNT
of gravity defying stone balancing! Over the weekend guests can runaway to the circus tent with Jamboree Arts to learn wobbly circus skills, from walking the tight wire to juggling and acrobatics, with circus artists and tutors on hand to turn novices into accomplished circus performers. Whilst the Tramlines line up gets bigger each
year, it remains seriously good value for money. A very limited number of day tickets can now be purchased from £40 +bf (Sunday day tickets sold out). Tickets have sold quicker than ever in 2019 but an extremely limited quantity of final tier weekend tickets priced at £85+bf are still available for purchase. VIP upgrade tickets are available for an
additional £50 granting access to the private VIP area situated right next to the main stage with private bars, food stalls and toilets. Under 12s go for free. For full ticketing info visit www. tramlines.org.uk.

Sheffield’s best and only Kinks tribute. Expect a set of Kinks classics and other various 60’s beat tunes. The Spooky Men’s Chorale are the gift that keeps on giving… as thunderous as a herd of wildebeest, as sly as a wagonload of Spike Milligans and as sonorous as a cloister of monks. The manchoir emerged blinking-eyed from the Blue Mountains of NSW fifteen years ago and armed with no more than their impressively cavernous vocal chords, a nice line in deadpan, improbable facial hair and an ill-matched set of hats, have been gleefully wooing audiences throughout Australia, NZ and the UK ever since. Renowned for a combination of Visigothic bravado, absurdist humour and eye-moistening tenderness, the Spookies, in middle age, are more masters of their territory than ever before, with five critically-acclaimed albums under their belt.

Emmerdale Mon: It’s a normal day at work for pub cook Victoria Barton in Emmerdale … until it’s not. Vic gets a horrible fright when she pops to the loo only to be confronted by a stranger. The woman, Wendy turns out to be the mum of Lee who raped Victoria. But she’s not there to apologise for her son’s despicable behaviour – she’s there to have a go at Victoria for spreading “lies”!Fortunately, swoops in to save Victoria and sends Wendy packing. Is this unnerving incident going to undo all the progress Vic has made to get back on track following the horrific attack? Elsewhere, Pollard gets the wrong end of the stick about Faith and Bear. And Dawn overhears Harriet telling Laurel how much she means to her. Eastenders Mon: Keanu prepares to move into the Mitchells. Ben is determined to put a spanner in the works. Stacey is furious. Whitney is excited. Mon 9pm: Kush Kazemi is in over his head. Callum Highway reaches out to dad Jonno Highway. Mick Carter helps out Tina. Thurs: Callum is nervous as his secret is under threat. Kat Moon accuses Martin Fowler of theft. Home & Away Mon: Ziggy and Dean part company. Mason and Tori clash. Brody and Simone ponder the future. Tues: Dean and Ziggy’s relationship is now public knowledge. Bella snaps and lashes out at Colby. Wed: Bella is full of remorse, but Colby is at his wits’ end. Marilyn is optimistic about the future. Thurs: John is deeply concerned about Jett. Irene finds her resolve tested by Bella. Robbo is delighted. Fri: John considers moving to the city in order to be closer to Jett., Tori inadvertently touches a nerve. Neighbours Mon: Roxy learns that Terese has told her mother about her romance with Vance. Yashvi is falling hard for Ned. Tues: Pierce steps in when Terese and Paul lose their investors. Aaron and David demand that Roxy mend her ways. Wed: Pierce is shaken. Sheila colludes with Paul to erode Gary’s relationship with Amy. Thurs: Heather is in Byron Bay, investigating a possible lead on Karen. Sheila and Paul conspire to make Gary miss an appointment. Fri: Yashvi is not sure where she stands with Ned. Finn admits to David that he is falling for Bea.

BUDDING SHEFFIELD ENGINEERS TAKE UP THE CHALLENGE School girls from across Sheffield took part in a national event last week which explored the possibilities available to females in the engineering sector. As part of the event, organised by Streets Ahead highways contractor, Amey; year 8, 9 and 10 school girls spent a day at Distington House in Sheffield for the Amey Challenge Cup. The annual competition, which came to Sheffield last week for the first time, involves 230 girls from 20 schools across the UK and 100 Amey employees. Designed to inspire and support young girls to achieve their potential as engineers and show how many different roles are available within the technology and engineering sectors, the event also encourages underprivileged schoolgirls to break the status quo and consider alternative occupations. Currently, only 11% of the British engineering workforce is female and there is a real need to
change existing perceptions to meet a growing skills gap in the industry. At Amey, 90 percent of the workforce is male. Peter Bamfield is Amey’s new Business Director for Streets Ahead. He said: “It was great to attend this motivating event, which was well received by the girls involved. Positive strides are being pursued by Amey to actively encourage more females into our industry, and that’s really promising. “Events like this which showcase our diverse engineering profession help to change existing perceptions, which is definitely needed in this sector.” Four teams of girls from two schools in Sheffield, UTC and Outwood Academy City, were involved in the event and looked at all aspects of an engineering project, from designing a section of smart motorway to budgeting and managing risk. The challenge also saw the girls presenting their solutions to senior professionals- one
being the Assistant Head of Highways at Sheffield City Council, Richard Bulloss. He said, “It was a real pleasure to have been involved in this event and see some of the fantastic concepts that the girls came up with. “There was a real appetite for the task at hand and I hope that the challenge will spur the girls on to explore the many options available to them in the evolving world of engineering. “The winning team from Outwood Academy impressed the judges with their willingness to challenge some of the traditional ways of thinking in civil engineering and the teamwork approach to solving the problem.” Further challenge cup events will be held around the country in coming weeks, including in York, Birmingham and London.

ANGLER’S CORNER

It’s the longest day of the year today (at time of writing), so it’s all downhill from here and I can’t believe that after a soggy few weeks, we’re actually supposed to be in summer, just the time of year to get the floater gear out and go looking for carp… so this week, I did. I took the very short trip to Basford Coarse Fishery in Staffordshire, a picturesque four pool venue and after a wander around, I opted for pool two and set up facing into the gentle breeze as dark grey clouds scudded over the horizon. Intending to surface fish on one rod and use a method feeder on the other, I managed to get the pod set up, drop the method feeder against some marginal reeds before the rain started to fall; not ideal surface fishing conditions! I huddled under the brolly as the indicator remained motionless and the rain sheeted across the lake as the grey clouds filled the sky. I wasn’t going to get soaked setting up the other rod, so poured a brew whilst I waited for the rain to pass. Whilst I watched, I saw glimpses of dark shapes beneath the ripples and knew that carp were feeding on the masses of midges which had erupted during the warm weather so if the sun did come out, I thought I had the chance of a bite or two… Eventually, the skies cleared, and the sun reflected off the tea coloured water. My floater rod is a light twelve footer with a test curve of just two pounds, an ideal tool to quickly flick line off the water and set the hook. I slipped on a Bolt Machine float, designed to provoke a violent take by providing resistance when a carp slurps in the bait, added a size 10 wide gape hook to a length of mono which was sparingly coated in Mucilin to ensure it floated. A silicon band was superglued to the shank of the hook and a pellet bander allowed me to slip one of my new baits snugly inside the soft rubber grip. I’m a big fan of Chum mixers to get fish feeding confidently, but this week I picked up some of the new floaters from the Spotted Fin stable, available in two great flavours, Catalyst and Smokey Jack, and in two sizes of 6mm and 11mm. Similar in external texture to a mixer, they are much lighter due to a honeycomb centre and can be carefully drilled, banded, or glued to the hook. The 6mm size are ideal for Spombing out to get fish feeding and the bigger 11mm baits are
superb ‘target’ offerings which are more visible and easier to spot. I had a problem though… ducks! I tried to get a small number of freebies out by softly catapulting from the cover of the brolly, but these floating eating machines were obviously attuned to the gentle ‘thwack’ of the catty elastic and appeared as if by magic in their hordes! I had no chance of getting fish to feed confidently and more importantly I didn’t want to waste the new bait on the resident birdlife, so wound in the method feeder, picked up my net and mat and went stalking instead… As the sun moved around behind me to warm up different areas of the lake, so had the carp followed. I could see dark backs breaking the surface to my left gently sipping at flailing insects, so I positioned myself where I could cast beyond the cautious fish, and very slowly wound the bait back towards them hoping that I’d get at least one chance… I often find that when floater fishing, time seems to stand still; the concentration required to keep watch on a small target whilst judging the relative position of nearby fish is intense, but I love this style of fishing perhaps more than any other and always feel that it is carp fishing at it’s purest. If you can use a fly rod to present the bait (I can’t, I catch trees) then even better! Whilst trying to tempt individual fish, the ducks kept an eye on whether I was giving them a feed too but I wasn’t; the only bait in the water was mine, so I recognised that any take was likely to be delicate and therefore spied intently on the distant bait. Eventually, an orange circle melted into view beneath the bait, and it was gently plucked from the surface by a rubbery pair of lips with hardly a ripple. Fortunately, I hadn’t lost sight of the floater and struck to be rewarded with a scattering of nearby carp as mine plunged down towards the lake bed in a desperate effort to escape. My light rod arched and the line sang as I spent a few minutes in a tussle with a beautifully scaled fish just over the 10lb mark which was quickly returned to sulk. The battle had scared every fish out the swim, but I thought they would soon return so used the interlude to drink more tea. Twenty minutes later, I resumed my sentinel, another bait banded onto the size 10, and within a few more minutes, had tricked another fish of similar size which gave a smashing scrap before it too was safely slipped back into the water. More tea followed, then I spent my last thirty minutes of the visit trying to get one last chance, so cast the controller out towards a pair

Rotherham United have completed the club record signing of Freddie Ladapo from Plymouth Argyle for an undisclosed fee. Ladapo becomes boss Paul Warne’s third close season capture following the recent arrivals of Shaun MacDonald from Wigan and Carlton Morris from Norwich and signs a three-year deal at AESSEAL New York Stadium. The 26-year-old enjoyed a productive spell in front of goal in League One last season, despite Argyle’s relegation – netting 19 times in all competitions. Warne’s latest capture also shares a similar career path to his new boss, after cutting his teeth in nonleague before entering the professional ranks. After leaving Colchester United early in his career, the Lagos-born hitman starred for the likes

of wallowing carp, one of which instantly turned and sucked down the Catalyst floater. It proved to be the best of the day at 17lb 10oz, a fine carp which gave a good account of itself before finally agreeing to a trophy shot; result! In the space of a couple of hours, between spells of rain and after working out that the ducks were wiser than I, three carp had been banked, all in double figures with all falling to the newest release from the Spotted Fin stable. I was pleased (disingenuous I know, sorry!) to discover that two other carpers who had been there considerably longer than I had caught no carp between them on the lower pool, so it appeared that surface fishing had been the way to attack. I
can’t wait until I find a water full of carp, yet free of birds on which to stack the new baits, just to see how they perform in a concerted effort, but based on my limited experience of the floaters so far, they worked well, were easy to use, packed with great smells and attractors, and caught fish… if that’s not an endorsement, I don’t know what is… Now if anyone knows of such a duck free, carp packed environment, please feel free to get in touch; I won’t tell anyone else…
