PURPLE PATCH CONTINUES FOR SHEFFIELD CITY SAFETY When people choose where to go for a troublefree night out, Sheffield remains a safe bet after it scooped two prestigious night-time economy awards this week.

Purple Flag is a town and city centre award – similar to the Blue Flag award for beaches – which aims to raise the standard and broaden the appeal of town and city centres between 5pm and 5am.

The flag will remain

pride of place in the city’s Peace Gardens for another year, showing that the city remains one of the country’s safest for a night out.

But this year there’s an extra piece of silverware heading for the Town Hall, after Sheffield won the Jim Ratchford Award for outstanding contribution to safety and diversity as well as the best partnership at this year’s Purple Flag Awards.

Councillor Paul Wood, Cabinet Member for Neighbourhoods and Community Safety at Sheffield City Council, said: “Keeping people safe in Sheffield is not something we take for granted. We have a fantastic partnership which is always looking at what we can do to promote safety, especially as the city grows its night-time offer with so many more restaurants, clubs and pubs

in the heart of the city.

“We are also pioneering new initiatives to keep door staff safe and working in partnership with our excellent pub and club community to promote safety for us all.

These purple flag awards show that we are flying high among UK cities for this work and for our wonderfully rich offer in evening entertainment that’s only getting better and better.”

Sheffield City Council works with partners such as South Yorkshire Police and Sheffield BID to make the city a safe place to live, work and party in.

Areas awarded the Purple Flag are recognised for providing a vibrant and diverse mix of dining, entertainment and culture while promoting the safety and wellbeing of visitors and local residents.

In Sheffield the partners involved in the work include Sheffield Business Improvement District (BID), South Yorkshire Police, Sheffield City Council, Sheffield City Centre Residents Action Group, South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue, U-Night and Sheffield City Centre Retailers Group.

CLEAN AIR DAY EVENT IS A BREATH OF FRESH AIR FOR DONCASTER

A national event focussing on keeping emissions down was held at Doncaster’s new Wool Market on Tuesday 25 June 2019.

The stands at the Clean Air Day event in Doncaster 2019 A number of the stands in the market square viewed from the Wool Market Clean Air Day 2019 saw local residents learn about the effects of air

pollution across the borough and how we can all do our bit to try and help keep Doncaster’s air cleaner.

Doncaster Council’s Pollution Control, Transport Planning and Energy teams were on hand to highlight how residents can do their bit for the environment by choosing cleaner methods of travel such as walking or cycling.

They were joined by

several car dealerships who showcased the benefits of opting for cutting edge electric/ hybrid vehicles, including hydrogen fuel cell cars, while a range of other stands showcased the alternatives to the traditional petrol car such as cycling and using public transport.

The council’s public health team were also available to offer advice

to people wanting to explore more sustainable methods of transport such as walking, running and cycling.

Cllr Chris McGuinness, Cabinet Member for Communities, Voluntary Sector, and the Environment, said: “Air pollution has a number of impacts on public health including links to asthma, cancer, dementia, low birth weight and decreased

lung function in children.

“We can all do our bit to improve air quality and one of the ways we can address this is by looking at our travel choices. If you’re travelling short distances, ditch the car and reap the benefits of walking or cycling instead. Liam Gallagher has announced details of a major UK tour and the 11-date schedule includes a show in Sheffield at the FlyDSA Arena on the 18th November 2019.

Huge demand for tickets has been a hallmark of Liam’s solo career. His debut UK arena tour saw all 100,000 tickets sell out within a morning, while all 40,000 tickets for his Finsbury Park show were snapped up within minutes.

joint plan launched to promote good health Sheffield is committed to reducing and eliminating health inequalities in the city and formally launched its Health and Wellbeing Strategy this week.

Agreed at Sheffield City Council’s cabinet meeting on 17 April, and NHS Sheffield Clinical Commissioning Group’s governing body in April, the strategy recognises that health inequalities affect everyone and states that it is not right that some people can expect to live a less healthy life because of who they are or where they live. It highlights the three main areas that contribute to a healthy life: Starting Well, Living Well and Ageing Well.

The Sheffield Joint Health and Wellbeing Board, a partnership between Sheffield City Council, the NHS and a range of partners in the city, will lead work with partners to deliver on the ambitions of the strategy. The board is aware that ‘reaching our ambitions will require not just the insight, commitment and action of the partners around the Board, but that of all partners and stakeholders across Sheffield.’

Work will focus on the person from birth to going to school; how a child develops, has a good education and then transitions to independence, how important it is for that person to have access to a home that supports their health and to have the opportunity for fulfilling work and the resources to support their needs. It will also focus on how that person should be able to walk or cycle in their local area whatever their age or ability, have access to care and support, meaningful social contact and an end to their life with dignity in a place of their choice.

Short term actions will follow the strategy and as no one sector has the answer

to these difficult challenges it will be important for people and communities to work with services and business to deliver this strategy. To develop a set of actions, there will be workshops on 9 different ‘ambitions’. Stakeholders from across the city will attend these workshops and discuss what needs to continue, what needs to stop, what needs to change, what blockages there are and how success will be measured. There will be an action plan for each ambition and The Health and Wellbeing Board will own these and make sure that the agreed actions are carried out.

The launch event at St. Mary’s Church, St Mary’s Gate took place on July 1st. It will open the discussions about turning plans into actions. There will be more events in the future too to give people the opportunity to be involved.

Greg Fell, Director of Public Health said: “We want to make sure that our action plans, built on engagement with people in the city, take the right approach so that we can deliver on our ambitions to sustain healthy and happy living in our city.”

THE MONTGOMERY TO APPOINT NEW DIRECTOR AS REFURBISHMENT PLANS PROGRESS Plans for the multimillion pound refurbishment of Sheffield city centre arts and theatre complex The Montgomery are moving ahead following initial meetings with architects.

An ambitious five-year programme will bring the popular Surrey Street community venue firmly into the 21st century with a complete refurbishment of the front of house, main auditorium and backstage facilities.

A new main frontage will give the venue a much greater presence and identity.

A new affordable recording studio, bar

area, improved toilet facilities and public spaces are just some proposals that will enhance the complex and create a more welcoming environment for visitors.

And the installation of a lift will address the long-standing problem of access, enabling The Montgomery to offer more relaxed performances, dementia friendly workshops and more, making it a theatre and arts centre available to everyone.

Following initial meetings with architects, the venues Board of Trustees has now developed a scheme of requirements for the refurbishment and begun to discuss the way

forward for fundraising.

But before serious work gets under way the recruitment process will begin for a new Director.

“We are looking for an inspiring individual to provide strong, dynamic leadership for The Montgomery, working to ensure the organisation meets its charitable objectives and delivers against our strategic vision for the future,” said Chair of Trustees Joanne Ringrose.

“As well as leading the organisation the successful applicant will develop strategies for delivering The Montgomery’s capital project, fundraising and building relationships within the city.”

The role has most

recently been filled

by Dawn Reynolds who, in a management restructure, now becomes General Manager.

“Dawn has done an amazing job in what have often been very challenging times and we are delighted that she will be moving to the new role of General Manager from September,” said Joanne.

“She will oversee the administration, operation, hire and contracting functions of the organisation and her in-depth knowledge of the building, its history and the running of the business will be invaluable to us as we go forward.”

I’ve been surprised this week and it wasn’t particularly pleasant either. I run a number of corporate brand social media pages, well known and highly respected brands within the angling industry, which I’ve been doing for a number of years.

During that time, I’ve dealt politely with thousands of questions, orders and odd genuine complaints, but in most instances it’s easy to deal with anything that comes our way, after all, our customer service is beyond reproach because I make sure it is!

The internet is a wonderful addition to our humble pastime, allowing anglers to interact, gain information, make new friends, and obtain knowledge, but something this week has got my back up somewhat. I’ve had to deal with a brand ‘hater’. I have no idea (beyond his Facebook profile) who the offending miscreant is, or what his beef is with one particular page, but he was astoundingly unpleasant to deal with. It started with an incorrect statement which he posted on the page, which I gently advised wasn’t true, only to be met with a plethora of other comments and postings which got more virulent and obnoxious as the minutes passed.

He isn’t a customer of ours, he has never worked for us, as far as we can tell, he’s has never placed an order with us, nor has he ever posted on our social media before, so I was perplexed to say the least…

I know the only way to deal with such unpleasantness is to ignore it if possible, block the offender quickly and delete the untruth, but why does it happen? Who on earth thinks it acceptable? Would you ever say such things face to face to the head of the company, or indeed in person to any other member of staff? Would you loudly spit the expletives in front of your own children or family? Probably not, so why would you write them for others to read and be upset by? I don’t see it in other sporting disciplines or hobbies, so why is angling different? I really have no idea. I’m not overly keen on shopping at Kwik Save, (I know!) but would never dream of posting something

on their social media pages which may be detrimental to their brand especially in support of my preferred supermarket, and despite an inherent distrust of certain vehicle manufacturers products, politicians, authors, and chocolatiers, I wouldn’t ever consider posting something derogatory there either!

So why is it potentially so damaging? For starters, the comments posted this week were blatant untruths maliciously designed to harm the brand identity, which could have been construed by existing and potential customers as a true reflection. In short, it could cost sales, customer loyalty and eventually cold, hard cash; none of which are desirable, especially if caused malevolently by a bitter individual. There is another thing to consider too; despite the assumed immunity of online presence, the poster could be guilty of an actual offence. Libel is the term used to describe the act of writing something which knowingly damages the integrity or reputation of a person or their interests, slander is much the same thing done verbally, and both have implications in the civil court, often resulting in the payment of compensation. Most people know that, so why does it still go on and why are some people just so damn poisonous?

Having identified it as a potential offence is one thing, getting recourse is something else.

It’s notoriously difficult to get a satisfactory result in court and even if you do receive compensation, the damage to any reputation is already done and can perhaps far outweigh any financial recompense… The expense of actually taking it to court can be prohibitive too; what happens if you are unable to obtain satisfactory proof and have to pay all costs too? It’s a risky game in order to protect that good character and for most, it would never get as far as court…

In the past, I have submitted claim for libel and won the case on behalf of a client. Was it worth it? Did it restore faith? Probably not, but that particular individual hasn’t troubled us again and is probably still stinging from the hefty penalty incurred. For the most part though, such vindictive individuals are swiftly prevented from posting further bile and banished into the internet ether where they belong. The term ‘troll’ is an apt description of such individuals, whose sole aim in

these instances seems to bring attention to themselves, but rather than post something intelligent, witty or interesting they submit only drivel or hatred which shows them for what they really are; idiots.

Is it misguided loyalty to another brand that drives it? Personal preference for one supplier over another? The desire to be ‘recognised’ as a defender of the marque and therefore worthy of a ‘field tester’ role in order to get a couple of quid off some bait and tackle? Who knows? Personally, I don’t let it get in the way of my work or my enjoyment of angling, nor does it shake my faith in the clients I
