A NEW FUTURE ON THE HORIZON FOR SHEFFIELD HIGH STREET AND FARGATE Sheffield’s historic High Street and Fargate have been shortlisted for part of a £675m fund designed to improve its vibrancy. Sheffield City Council, with support from the University of Sheffield, made an application to improve the High Street, Fargate, Castle Square and the top of Angel Street of the city to the government’s Future High Streets fund. It has now been shortlisted as one of 50 bids, which will now be able to develop a full business case to improve this part

of the city. There are no guarantees at this stage but the council has made a strong bid to improve the fortunes of the area. The government has committed £675m to help local high streets become even more vibrant town centres where people live, shop, use services, and spend their leisure time. The Future High Streets Fund will support and fund local areas’ plans to make their high streets and town centres fit for the future. The expression of interest for High Street and Fargate was based on

replicating the successes of the £480m Heart of the City II scheme currently taking place at the other end of Fargate. Councillor Mazher Iqbal. Diane Jarvis from Sheffield BID and Richard Eyre from city centre management at Sheffield City Council Councillor Mazher Iqbal, Cabinet Member for Business and Investment at Sheffield City Council, said: “It’s excellent news to make the second stage of this process. Our city is transforming into a worldleading mix of retail, residential and leisure as

evidenced by our Heart of the City II scheme and the improvements on the Moor. But we don’t want change to happen in silos, or the Heart of the City’s obvious benefits to detract from other proud and historic parts of our city. “That’s why it is important that we now work with government to develop a compelling business case that shows how much pride we have in these streets and our future plans for them. Although there are no guarantees, we are confident that the huge progress we have already made to develop

new vibrancy in this part of the city centre will stand us in good stead and, if successful, the Future High Streets fund will help us to do much more.” Two other Sheffield applications to the Future High Street Fund – one led by the City Council for the Attercliffe area, and one led by Dransfield Properties for Stocksbridge were not successful in moving forward to the next phase. The Council will work with partners to consider how best to progress activity in these areas.

Cllr Nigel Ball, Cabinet Member for Public Health, Leisure and Culture, said: “The Dragon Boat Challenge is always a summer highlight at Doncaster Lakeside. It will be highly enjoyable for

the teams of local businesses taking part and the crowds who flock to cheer them on. Why do North Koreans draw the straightest lines? Because they have a supreme ruler. I asked my chef friend how hard it would be to make a stir-fry in a meadow? He said it was just a wok in the park. A construction worker walks into a bar with a slab of asphalt. The bartender asks: “What can I get you?” The construction worker says: “One beer for me - and one for the road.” To the person who stole my trainers and hi vis jacket... You can run but you can’t hide. My son asked why I kept pacing in front of the clock... I told him I was just passing the time. I use to be indecisive... But now I’m not so sure... My wife thinks I don’t give her enough privacy. At least that’s what she said in her diary. I saw my doctor today and told her of my dreams about Tom Jones. I asked her: “Is this common?” She replied: “It’s not unusual...”

delight as city smoking rates fall This positive news is welcome by all Smokefree Sheffield Partners across the city who are working to achieve a smokefree generation. Smokefree Sheffield, a three-year initiative is commissioned by Sheffield City Council as part of the current tobacco control strategy and aims to reduce the prevalence of smoking across the city. These figures mean that Sheffield now falls below the national smoking prevalence level, which in 2018 was 14.4%. The downward trend in Sheffield supports the aim of achieving a Smokefree city. Greg Fell, Director of Public Health at Sheffield City Council, said: “Looking back at the data since 2015 we seem to have significantly accelerated a downward trend. However this is a huge drop in one year alone and whilst we are pleased to see the smoking rates coming down in Sheffield it is a big shift, so we are being slightly cautious about over interpreting the data and we recognise we still have a lot of work to do to achieve our goal.” Councillor Mary Lea, Cabinet Member for Culture, Parks and Leisure at Sheffield City Council said: “In Sheffield we have worked hard over many years to address the issue of smoking and we have worked equally hard to sustain the £1m investment in tobacco control. From October 2017 we have delivered

a comprehensive programme in line with the World Health Organisation’s evidence. We believe we have the balance of interventions, services and policy in place to tackle smoking at both an individual and population level. Our harm reduction approach in the city encourages those who can’t or don’t want to stop smoking to switch to vaping – and many people have. We have strong engagement from a range of city partners all working collectively to combat tobacco addiction. We believe all of this underpins our local achievements and this is why we are seeing more and more people quit tobacco each year in our city.” National and international evidence strongly demonstrates that investment in comprehensive tobacco control will generate decline in smoking rates amongst populations. New York, California and Australia are great examples of this. Sheffield appears to be following this pattern. Greg Fell said: “We will continue in our efforts and ambitions to achieve a smokefree generation in Sheffield by 2025. We will remain relentless in this, as we still have much to do. For example more funding and further policy measures are needed; the levy on the tobacco industry needs to be implemented in the UK. We need tobacco to become a licensed product and the age of sale to be

increased to 21 and finally we need the industry to make sales and advertising data available to local authorities. The levy is particularly important given the cuts and lack of communication/marketing spend in England currently.” For more information, visit the Smokefree Sheffield website at www.smokefreesheffield.org.

cholesterol & statins - the facts

Over 7 million of us Brits are taking statins to lower the level of low-density lipoprotein – also known as ‘bad’ cholesterol – in the blood. What is cholesterol? Cholesterol is a fatty substance found in the blood. Everyone has cholesterol and we need it to stay healthy but if we have too much then it can clog arteries which in turn can increase our risk of suffering a heart attack or stroke. Why are statins prescribed? Statins can lower ‘bad’ cholesterol by up to 50% and they will also increase your ‘good’ cholesterol. Even if your cholesterol is not high, doctors may prescribe a statin to reduce your risk of cardiovascular disease. A medical recommendation to take statins will be based on a number of factors and these may include: • High blood pressure • If you have already suffered a stroke or heart attack As temperatures finally rise in the UK, give you as much protection as a dry one. • A family history of heart disease or high cholesterol and many of us are about to head off Which sunglasses to choose? • Smoking to sunnier climes, it’s important to It is sensible to wear sunglasses in strong • Your weight remember that sunshine can be harmful sunlight as UV rays can damage the eyes • Your ethnicity – the World Health as well as beneficial. Wedding Guide

TIPS TO SAVE MONEY Whether it means saving a bunch on your wedding flowers, driving down the cost of your wedding transport, or snapping your photography costs in half, we’ve come up with a range of top tips for a cheap and cheerful wedding. In order to pull off the ultimate cheap wedding, you just need to be a prudent planner, a savvy spender, and a nuptial negotiator! One of the best ways to save money is to involve as many people as you can in the planning process. By asking friends and family to contribute something towards your big day, perhaps instead of buying you a gift, your wedding will be special, unique and personal. Photography: Many aspiring photographers need a solid portfolio in order to build a reputation and adequate client base, so it can be well worth scouting out a friend or a

beginner to take your wedding photos. As with the majority of wedding services, you’ll also find that many photographers offer a discount for weekday weddings, so even though the average price of a wedding photographer is roughly £950, tying the knot on a weekday is another means of achieving a cheap wedding. On average, a wedding on a weekday cuts costs down by a third. Wedding Flowers: If you’re getting married in a church, consider having your wedding before or after a popular religious festival such as Christmas or Easter. You’ll find that churches are decorated lavishly for these occasions, eliminating the need to source a florist elsewhere. Taking the flowers from your ceremony to your reception is an additional crafty cost cutting exercise.

Cakes: Time is money when it comes to cake. The fancier the design, the greater the cost. Tried and tested cheap wedding cakes from supermarkets are also a good option. If you’re not keen to compromise on your cake, learn how to haggle and put your nuptial negotiation skills into play. The average cost of a wedding cake lies around the £400 mark, but you can save up to £200 by reducing the number of tiers.

If you’re opting for a professional catering package, make sure you are clear on what is and isn’t included; beware of hidden added extras. Also beware that the average price of wedding catering combined with your venue is just over £4000! And finally...

Weekday weddings are the easiest way to cut costs — because the majority of couples get married at the weekend, venues tend to put Catering: Swap a three course their prices up to meet high demand. If you are committed meal for an afternoon affair to having a cheap wedding, serving high tea, or keep it contemporary and classy with this is the single simplest way of achieving it! LOCAL TRIBUTE LORRIE PICK UPS YET ANOTHER NATIONAL AWARD On July 3rd, one of the longest serving tribute artistes in the UK and the only representative of the 1940’s acts, was awarded the ‘Music Industry Award’ from the National Tribute and Music Awards. Lorrie Brown received her award at a glamorous event staged at Chateau Impney in Droitwich. The award was for service in the tribute industry both on stage and linked to the charity work she has done, raising £10,000 for the Dame Vera Lynn Children’s Charity. Then to top off the event a personal message from the lady who she portrays was played to the 100’s in attendance at the awards ceremony Dame Vera Lynn recorded a message of congratulations for Lorrie which was played at this years National Tribute Music Awards. Lorrie Brown has been performing her tribute to Dame Vera Lynn for over 25yrs. In 1991 she was singing in the local

residential homes near her home in Sheffield and was asked if she knew any Vera Lynn songs. So Lorrie learnt a few of the classics and put them into her act. It wasn’t long before she was being asked to sing more of them and eventually decided to create a full show of Vera Lynn hits. This was in the days when tribute acts were just a rare novelty with maybe 1 or 2 working on the circuit. Now its a multi million pound industry and is one of the biggest employers of professional artists. So much so that they now have an annual awards ceremony for some of the biggest ‘stars’ in the business. The National Tribute Music Awards has just been held at Chateau Impney in the West Midlands and Lorrie was there representing one of the biggest stars of the 1940’s with her Vera Lynn tribute. Lorrie says, “It was an

amazing evening and so surreal. I was there in my ENSA uniform surrounded by tributes to current music stars and then to be called up and receive an award for a job I have loved for the last 28yrs was incredible and for Dame Vera to be supporting me like she has was just the icing on the cake.” Lorrie received her first award in 2013. Following the award she was invited to meet Dame Vera at her home to congratulate her on the award and since then has formed a strong relationship with the forces sweetheart, who follows Lorrie’s events keenly. After the tour of ‘Sincerely Yours’ which told the story of a young Vera Lynn and how she became the legend that she is, Dame Vera said she thought the show was ‘Superb’. The show was created in 2017 to celebrate her 100th birthday, Lorrie says “I couldn’t believe it when Dame Vera said how

much she had enjoyed the show. We recorded a special DVD for her from our live show at Windsor Theatre Royal and also recorded some personal messages for her from her fans in the audience. We were very nervous sending the DVD but she said she had heard many great things about the show and wanted to see it for herself. It was a big project featuring a live 7 piece band, which we were told by Dame Vera’s M.D, was the same line up that she sang with in her early days as a band singer. We also featured video links during the show telling her story as well as the amazing Colin Bourdiec portraying George Formby. The tour ran for 50 dates throughout 2017 around the UK. Also, during the tour we collected for Dame Vera’s charity, ‘The Dame Vera Lynn Childrens Charity’ for which she is the Patron. It’s an amazing charity

SMASH LONDON SHOW RESPECT CELEBRATES ARETHA FRANKLIN AT CAST Direct from London’s Eventim Apollo, this autumn, Respect: The Aretha Franklin Songbook is coming to Cast theatre in Doncaster on Sunday 22 September! From the creator of West-End smash hit Thriller Live!, directed by Racky Plews (Footloose, American Idiot) and with script by Tiffany King, Respect: The Aretha Franklin Songbook will take you on an uplifting musical journey. Aretha’s incredible story is told in the form of a powerful gospel sermon and features lead vocals from Stacy Francis, Cleopatra Higgins, Tanya Edwards and Cleo Stewart, accompanied by a fantastic live band and gospel choir. Aretha Franklin sadly passed away on the 16th August 2018, leaving behind her an unmatchable musical legacy that will live on forever. Her amazing songbook contains some of the greatest songs ever written and recorded. Respect: The Aretha Franklin Songbook is produced by Adrian Grant, creator of the Michael Jackson hit musical: Thriller Live. Adrian says: ‘I grew up listening to Aretha’s music, and

often, if I wish to relax, it will be to one of her albums. Aretha is one of the greatest vocalists to ever perform and I had been thinking about producing a show around her music for many years. Now I have the chance to honour Aretha and her legacy through this show. Fans of all ages will love the musical journey we will take them on which spans over four decades of hits from “Won’t Be Long”, released in 1960, to “I Knew You Were

Waiting”, the number one duet with George Michael in 1987. I’m so excited to be working with the outstanding singers and musicians we have lined up for this show. They will absolutely do Aretha’s music justice, and I myself cannot wait to hear them on stage delivering some of the most popular songs of all time!’ This amazing two-hour live concert celebrating the late, great Queen Of Soul will take you

on a nostalgic musical journey packed with over 24 of Aretha Franklin’s greatest hits including: Think, I Say A Little Prayer, Do Right Woman, Bridge Over Troubled Water, Natural Woman, Son Of A Preacher Man, Respect and many more! Respect: The Aretha Franklin Songbook is on sale at Cast, Doncaster now. Tickets are £26, call 01302 303 959 or visit their website at castindoncaster.com to book.

that helps children under 5yrs old who suffer from cerebral palsy. It provides therapy and support for the children and the families and has had so many success stories with the children. We managed to raise £10,000 and presented a cheque to them at their headquarters, which was received by Dame Vera’s daughter, Virginia”. Following the presentation the charity asked Lorrie and her husband, Gary Birtles, who produces the shows, to become ambassadors for the charity and now work closely with them in raising awareness and funds. Since then Lorrie has been continuing her shows, both solo and with the full cast, in June to remember D Day 75 they performed at the International Bomber Command Centre in Lincoln. Lorrie says, “That was a big project, the first time we have combined all of our shows into one. We had the band backing us and

the characters from the Dads Army show as well as all the tributes we feature in the show. In all it was a 3hr show”. During her 25+ years with her show Lorrie has performed to tens of thousands of people and says, “The smallest audience I have worked to was 4 people in an office in London. I was booked by the staff of a gentleman who was 80yrs old but still went into the office and they wanted to give him something different. So they booked me to come in and sing a couple of songs for him in front of his desk. It was a very strange setting but he loved it and said it was the most original present he had received.” At the other extreme Lorrie was invited to perform at the West Ham football ground on Remembrance Sunday 2009 to sing on the pitch at half time. In the crowd were a party of Chelsea Pensioners from the Royal Hospital as well as members of the armed

forces who had just returned from a tour of duty in Afghanistan. “That was a very nerve wracking but exciting experience’ Lorrie says,’

I have played in some big theatres but to walk out across a football pitch in front of 33,000 people was incredible.”

SHEFFIELD CITY COUNCIL RESTATES ITS AMBITION TO BECOME ZERO CARBON BY 2030 Sheffield City Council has restated its ambition to become zero carbon by 2030 as it today begins to discuss the findings of a specially-commissioned report to tackle climate change. The Council’s Green Partnership Board has been working with the Tyndall Centre for Climate Change Research which has produced a carbon budget for the city. The report will be discussed at full council last week. It comes in the week when the city launched its Clean Air consultation with the people of Sheffield – and just weeks after the council became the largest authority in the country to declare a climate emergency. Councillor Lewis Dagnall, Cabinet Member for Climate Change at Sheffield City Council has also pledged to work with

campaigners to shape the city’s response to the climate emergency – and held a constructive meeting with Extinction Rebellion last week. The Tyndall Report lays out a framework for how the city can achieve its zero carbon target: today’s full council is the first discussion of how that target will be met. The Council is also setting up a Citizen’s Assembly to help inform how the city should achieve its targets. Although there is a focus on energy use and consumption in the report, the council is expected to embed climate change in every aspect of its work – from planning and regeneration to transport and resources. The report recommends that, in order for Sheffield to make its fair contribution to global climate goals, the city must not exceed a ‘budget’ of an emissions budget of 16 million tonnes of carbon emissions over the next two decades. At current rates of energy consumption, Sheffield would use this entire budget in less than six years. Councillor Lewis Dagnall, Cabinet Member for Environment and Climate Change said: “By receiving the independent report of the Tyndall Centre for Climate Change Research today, we are making a major

easily possible to cast a filled bag over 100 yards! It is important to remember to puncture the bag a few times before with Clint Walker casting with a baiting needle or similar This week, an overview of a staple to prevent air becoming trapped in the angling product, PVA. What does PVA causing it to float in the upper layers PVA actually stand for? Most of us of the water and burst before the rig is have used it, most of us know what it’s properly settled. supposed to do, but what makes it up? PVA mesh stocking; also known as PVA (Poly Vinyl Alcohol) is water soluble cobweb PVA. I use this product more synthetic polymer which is oil and grease than any other. I like the exceptionally resistant. First discovered as Poly Vinyl fast ‘melt’ rate, and the fact that it can Acetate in 1912 by German scientist Dr. be used to produce PVA ‘sticks’ also Fritz Klatte, the process then in use was make it a winner in my book. Mesh stocking ‘balls’ many other blogs, diaries and forums, can also be catapulted great distances to and every angler will use their PVA in drop lightweight baits in tight areas at different ways; what I hope to cover are long range (especially if a small stone is the basic options available today. added). WESTWOOD PENS NEW OWLS DEAL

The popular shot-stopper has penned a two-year deal at Hillsborough. The coming campaign will be Westwood’s sixth with Wednesday having joined the club in July 2014. A clean sheet in the 1-0 win away at Brighton kick-started a superb debut term for the Republic of Ireland international. The 34-year-old went on to win the swfc. co.uk Player of the Year award and posted an outstanding 17 clean sheets, equalling the long-standing club record. He was also named in the Professional Footballers’ Association (PFA) Championship Team of the Year. Wednesday posted another 17 clean sheets in 2015/16, with Westwood making 37 appearances in total, in a season which saw the Owls miss out on promotion at the last in the play-off final. Westwood was a key figure in the Owls’ backline again in 2016/17, helping Wednesday to achieve a place in the Championship play-offs for the second year running and scooping the club’s official Player of the Year award for the second time in his S6 career. first part of the 2018/19 campaign, the experienced shot-stopper fought his way back into contention and thrived under new manager Steve Bruce. He made 21 appearances in the second half of the season, 11 of which were clean sheets. Westwood has made 164 appearances in total for the Owls.

tangling around the hook. Over weedy or ‘choddy’ lake beds, nuggets are an ideal way to slow the fall of the hook bait to help it rest on top of any debris. Another benefit to the nugget means that when it starts to dissolve and is released from the hook, it rises to the surface of the water giving an ideal target for baiting up or identifying precisely where the hook bait has settled. All PVA must be kept completely dry until ready for use. Damp sheds and tackle bags are no friend to PVA and it will quickly shrivel and become useless if not stored properly. PVA has

many uses and the clever angler will think of many different ways to utilize Poly Vinyl Alcohol to improve the chances of catching that carp of a lifetime. Get it right and you guarantee that the baits are in the best place to trap fish, get it wrong and you end up with a sticky mess and bait everywhere! Try it and see if you can master PVA.

FOCUS ON HILLSBOROUGH The Strines Inn It’s only a short drive from the heart of Hillsborough, but the Strines Inn could be in a different world! Established almost 750 years ago, this beautiful olde worlde country pub has been a favourite for generations of local residents. Boasting open fires and a superb menu of freshly prepared, home-cooked food, it is both a wonderful place for a drive out, and a famous resting place for walkers enjoying the breath-taking countryside surrounding the Inn. The Strines boasts an impressive array of traditional real ales, and it is both dog and child-friendly – a special highlight each year for the kids is the chance to see the flocks of local peacocks!

eastern half is in lower agricultural land and contains the parish's significant habitations, which include the Sheffield suburb of Stannington, as well as Oughtibridge and Worrall, and the villages of High Bradfield and Low Bradfield. The parish also includes several reservoirs, and a number of minor settlements. Bradfield is located 8 miles (13 km) from Sheffield city centre and 14 miles (23 km) from Barnsley. On 6 July 2014, Stage 2 of the 2014 Tour de France from York to Sheffield, passed through the village. It was also the location of the seventh climb of the stage, the Category 4 Côte de Bradfield. It was 1 kilometre (0.62 mi) long at an average gradient of 7.4%. Bradfield is one of the largest parishes in England, and covers extensive moor and agricultural land around the Damflask Reservoir, Dale Dike Reservoir, Strines Reservoir, and Agden Reservoirs, including the Bradfield, Midhope, and Broomhead moors and eastern parts of the Howden moors. The western end of the parish reaches to the upper parts of the Upper Derwent Valley with part of its

boundary forming Yorkshire’s border with Derbyshire. The northern part of the parish includes the Langsett reservoir and Midhope reservoir, and borders the town and civil parish of Stocksbridge. The eastern edge reaches the western extent of the urban spread of Sheffield, and includes the suburb of Stannington, as well as the villages of Oughtibridge, Wharncliffe Side, and Worrall. Minor habitations within the parish include Midhopestones, Upper Midhope on the northern edge, and Dungworth in the southeastern part. The moorland villages of High Bradfield and Low Bradfield are located within the parish. High Bradfield possesses a Gothic revival church, and the earthworks of a motte and bailey castle. Low Bradfield is less historic, having been largely destroyed in the Great Sheffield flood of 1864. The parish extends across the City of Sheffield electoral wards of Stocksbridge and Upper Don and Stannington Ward, and covers more than a third of the land area of Sheffield City Council.

FOCUS ON HILLSBOROUGH La Plata Social Club

FOCUS ON HILLSBOROUGH Rose & Crown

There is a La Plata Club in Argentina and another in Spain, but the homeliest and friendliest is surely to be found right here in S6 and it’s even friendlier now with new steward Tim Brooke behind the bar. Readers are welcome to call in for a coffee after shopping in Hillsborough Centre, only one minute’s walk from the club, based on Walkley Lane for many years. With easy parking and with Supertram and bus stops close by, La Plata’s excellent location is equalled only by its comfortable, clean and bright surroundings. You can sit inside or in the welcoming Beer Garden right outside the front door. Brian Helliwell of La Plata says “We want shoppers and their families to visit and see what the club offers; it really is a cosy and family-friendly home from home.” After entering through the Beer Garden you arrive in the Family Room which is well furnished and comfortable. Live acts appear on stage every Saturday and bingo is played several times during the week. On Mondays there’s bingo with free snacks provided, on Wednesdays it’s “All-Pay-Out” night and on Fridays and Sundays there is a £500 jackpot and Open the Box. Then there’s the separate Pool Room, recently refurbished it provides players with the privacy to enjoy a quiet game or watch sport on TV. Low priced drinks include Stones, John Smiths and Heineken, plus S6ers own Bradfield Brewery beer is available. With almost 500 members La Plata is already well-known inS6, so why not visit soon and see if you might like to join them?

The people behind one of the best known Food Pubs in Sheffield, The Peacock at Stannington, have now also taken over the management of The Rose & Crown at Wadsley. Nicola, David, Jonathan and their team are running both hostelries and are bringing their expertise to this well-appointed, semi-rural retreat located at Stour Lane, Wadsley Common. The pub itself has an abundance of olde world charm, with log burners and period furnishings, complemented by an outstanding beer garden which is ideal for families. Sunday Lunch is served from 12 until 5pm and from Mondays to Saturdays, two people can dine at lunchtimes for only £7. Incredible value for home made quality food, complemented by traditional cask ales. The evening menu is available until 9pm Monday to Saturday. Contact The Rose & Crown on 0114 233 7920.

The name of the suburb comes from Hillsborough House built and named in 1779 in tribute to the Earl of Hillsborough who lived in Hillsborough, County Down. Approximately 42 people were killed in the immediate Hillsborough area in the Great Sheffield Flood of 1864 and there was much devastation. The area only started to be built up as the district recovered from the flood with the success of the steel and engineering industries in Sheffield creating a demand for suburban housing. In 1889

Hillsborough was described in Kelly's Directory as “a large and increasing suburb of Sheffield”. In 1901 the Hillsborough area was incorporated within the City of Sheffield. The arrival of the electric tram in 1903 was a big boost to the development of the suburb; it initially ran as far as the top of Parkside Road before extending to Middlewood in 1913. House building continued until around 1909 when most of present day Hillsborough’s road infrastructure had been created. in Clubland. You can also enjoy a large variety of drinks available at some of the very lowest prices anywhere around. Then there’s Sky Sports and BT Sport, three full size snooker tables and a darts room. For your own special event, there is not one but two function rooms and a marquee provided free, with the option of on-site catering provided by the club itself. So why not visit Wadsley Bridge Club and discover what you might have been missing right on your doorstep in S6!
