RUSH IN DEMAND FOR TRAMLINES 2020 TICKETS AFTER HUGE SUCCESS LAST WEEKEND After an incredibly successful Tramlines in Hillsborough Park last weekend tickets for the 2020 event went on sale Monday (22/07) and over half of tickets were sold in less than 24 hours. Early bird tickets sold out in just minutes, but there were some reported problems when trying to purchase tickets for next year’s festival. Tramlines have confirmed that over half the tickets (around 15,000) have already sold for next year’s event, and that early bird
tickets sold out in just minutes. Speaking on Toby Foster’s BBC Radio Sheffield breakfast show Tramline’s Timm Cleasby said: “We’re fairly confident that it’s half the tickets. It’s completely bonkers. It’s wonderful that the people of Sheffield have enjoyed it so much that they’ve given us this demand and wanted to come back so early on. It’s such a lovely feeling to have, that we’ve done a good job.” Tramlines have confirmed that they are
18
working with the ticket sellers to make sure that everybody affected will have their issues resolved, and have asked that in the meantime, people contact the ticket seller directly, so they can deal with each issue on a case by case basis. Timm added: “It’s just been overwhelming demand. We were prepared to go on sale at six o’clock. Everyone was in place and the ticketing company had everything ready, and at ten to six we had 4,000 people on the website waiting to get tickets
and at six o’clock we had 7,000 people in the ticketing flow, so as you can imagine, that puts a bit of stress on all the systems. “Because there’s 7,000 people already in there, the people who got in super early probably got the tickets, but then as people have got them in their baskets making their purchases, other people have also got them in their baskets making their purchases, and unfortunately some of those people didn’t actually complete purchases, so there were
some issues, definitely. “If people have been charged twice, or if they’ve been charged and they’ve not had a confirmation, if they’ve bought tickets and the payments seems to have not completed and they’ve bought another set of tickets, then the ticketing company will work the people on a cases by case basis. If you have had a problem purchasing tickets, contact Gigantic at www. gigantic.com/contactus.

DONCASTER PARKS RECOGNISED AS ONE OF THE UK’S VERY BEST GREEN SPACES Last week, a record number of parks and green spaces collected a Green Flag Award. Four Doncaster parks Sandall Park (Wheatley Hills), Quarry Park (Dunsville), Bentley Park and Cusworth Hall Park - have been recognised by the Green Flag Award Scheme as some of the very best in the world. The award means that they retain their existing recognition as a prominent green space.

exhibiting poets Karl Tearney and Stewart Hill will perform their poetry, exhibiting artists will talk about their work with Q&A's from the audience and servicemen authors will read from their books including Harry Parker and Karl Tearney. Stewart Hill will also deliver his 30 minute 'There but Not There' performance of his experiences in Afghanistan. About Style for Soldiers Style for Soldiers was founded 10 years ago by menswear designer Emma Willis MBE in response to the severe casualties returning from Afghanistan in the height of the violent conflict. Struck by the challenge these young men and women would now face post medical discharge from the military, having suffered life changing physical and emotional injuries, Emma started visiting Headley Court Military hospital every two months for 8 years to make complimentary clothing to help with self esteem and confidence. The charity also provides Bespoke Regimental Walking sticks which have been sponsored by Their Royal Highnesses The Prince of Wales and Duchess of Cornwall. She has built a database of over 750 injured service
personnel who the charity continues to support with clothing for interviews, new jobs and important occasions, hosting the largest reunion parties held in the country, attended by His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales in 2016, including a family day at Woburn Safari Park donated each year by The Duke of Bedford.Ambassadors of the charity include Charles Dance, David Gandy and Telegraph Fashion Director Lisa Armstrong. Through regular contact with the rehabilitating servicemen and women Emma has met several who have turned instinctively to art and poetry to help with the psychological healing process, resulting in last November’s well attended ‘Art in theAftermath’ exhibition at La Galleria, London, showcasing art, poetry and film created by former servicemen suffering from PTSD or brain injury predominantly incurred in Afghanistan, as well as the paintings and drawings of Harry Parker who was physically injured by a Taliban IED explosion. The charity has now awarded seven arts sponsorships and each have resulted in the start of successful careers. The Sheffield Show, as part of the Invictus Trials, will continue this momentum and the charity is extremely grateful to the City’s support.

ISSUE 1328 24/07/2019
don’t be a victim of doorstep crime! Doorstep Crime is the name given to crimes carried out by bogus callers and rogue traders who call uninvited at people’s homes under the guise of legitimate business or trade. The phrase ‘doorstep crime’ includes distraction burglary/bogus callers, rogue traders and unscrupulous sales people. Bogus callers often dress appropriately for the role they are playing and most are very convincing and extremely persuasive in the story they give. Often one person will call at the address and be speaking with the resident whilst another will sneak in the property to steal items. To gain access to homes, they may claim to be from the local authority and other public agencies or utility companies. In particular, they often claim to be from the Water Board”. Property repairs, “Water Board’ or water related excuses continue to be the top favourite excuses used to gain access into vulnerable people’s homes. This is despite the fact that Water Boards have not been in operation since the 1980’s.Yorkshire Water is the main water provider with over 500,000 customers within South Yorkshire and like all utility companies, provide free services for customers who need extra help, Yorkshire Water’s scheme is called ‘HELPING HANDS’, You can arrange for any Yorkshire Water employee visiting your home to use a password of your choice. To find out more about HELPING HANDS please contact Yorkshire Water on 0800 138 7878. If you receive your water supply from Severn Trent they have their own scheme to help vulnerable people, call 03457 500 500 to find out more. Distraction burglary offences have decreased steadily over the last few years, which is fantastic news and shows the benefit of partnership working to raise awareness of these issues. However, the impact of this type of crime can be devastating and you should always be on your guard when someone calls at your door unexpectedly.
Below are some simple steps you can take to help you prevent becoming a victim of a bogus caller: • When you get an unexpected caller at your home just take a moment to think, if you do decide to open your door to a caller use your door chain or door bar, even better keep your door closed and open a window slightly and ask who there are and what they want • Keeping your front and back doors locked at all times, even when at home, this prevents ‘sneak in’ burglars • Think about whether you are expecting anyone and look through the window before answering the door • Identification does not guarantee the caller is genuine; ask for it to be passed through the letterbox and contact the company to see if that person should be at your house. Do not use the number printed on the Identity Card as this could be false, find one in your phone book or via the internet • Please use a bank or building society to keep larger sums of money rather than hiding it in your home where it could be found • Fit a door chain or door bar to wooden doors, special door chains are available for UPVC doors which fit easily and are inexpensive and you do not have to drill into the door so preventing damage Our advice is simple - keep your doors locked and do not let strangers into your home unless you have verified their identity, if they are genuine they will not object and if you are not sure, DON’T OPEN THE DOOR! Rogue Traders Rogue Traders are people pretending to be builders or “qualified” trades men or women needing to do ‘urgent’ repairs or sales people offering bargain products. They often pressurise householders to make quick decisions to have work done, pay in advance for materials or do poor work at highly inflated prices and usually ask for cash payment They will often cold call on vulnerable
SYP supporting the community Andy Foster is the Fraud Protection Office for South Yorkshire Police, with aprticular emphasis on helping vulnerable people to avoid becoming victims of crime. In a series of occasional articles Andy will hopefully help Mercury readers become aware of the some of the common frauds he comes across every day. Following on from this week’s article on doorstep crime, he will shortly be taking a look at telephone fraud, and how to avoid becoming a vicitm. He offers further advice and guidance based on his own experience, of the problems of doorstep crime in the area. He commented “Rogue Traders and those who commit distraction burglary often ‘travel’. They may commit doorstep crime in one area before moving on to other areas of South Yorkshire or event travelling to other force areas. They also often share information about their victims, so, for instance if I was a victim of someone knocking at my door claiming to be from ‘The Waterboard’ and they get away with some money, they may return the following month and say I need work on my roof/gutters/garden etc. One of the
most important messages for the readers is that Waterboard, Gas Board or Electric Boards no longer exist, two of the most common excuses used by criminals to gain entry to a vulnerable persons home is water related, ie, problem with the water, collapsed drain, waterboard ect or property repair maintenance, ie, problem with the roof, gutters, clear you garden and so on. The majority of people in South Yorkshire get their water from Yorkshire Water (over 500,000 customers) some also receive their water from Severn Trent. Both have schemes that support vulnerable people.” He also feels it is essential that, if you have been the target of an attempted fraud of this type, (even if you didn’t suffer any loss) you should report it to the Police, so they may steps to prevent others being conned by this type of criminal. Remember - you aren’t wasting police time and you may be helping a friend or neighbour! SYP Alerts offers information about local policing issues by text, email or voice message. households and deliberately overcharge for unsatisfactory goods and services. This can include charging for unnecessary work, damaging property deliberately in order to obtain money, leaving work unfinished and intimidating householders Victims of this practice are often vulnerable or elderly and in the most serious cases, offenders will return to the same victim again and again until their savings are exhausted Property Repairs & Maintenance Problems • You can reduce the risk of falling victim to a rogue trader or poor repairs buy using trades people recommended by family and friends. If you do decide work need doing, always obtain at least 3 quotes and make sure the quote you accept is in writing • Ask traders to provide you with written contact details and ask about insurance backed guarantees • Close and lock your back door before answering the front door • Use a spy hole, chain or window to have a look at the caller before answering the door. If you do not recognise them speak through the closed and locked door • Never buy goods and services from people calling unexpectedly or unannounced at your door • If the caller is selling something or offering work on your house or garden tell them that you are not interested and ask them to leave • If they do not leave tell them you will call the police • Ask for details of previous satisfied customers and contact them, go and see the work carried out if you can for further peace of mind • If you are having problems with someone carrying out work on your home, contact Citizens Advice Consumer Service 0344 4111 444 or via www.citizensadvice. org.uk If you feel you have been a victim of a rogue trader please inform the police by ringing 101.

BENEFITS OF SMART METERS PROMOTED TO OVER 65s IN YORKSHIRE Yorkshire Housing’s Home Improvement Agencies (HIA) are promoting smart meter use among the over-65s in South and North Yorkshire. The South HIA secured a £25,000 grant from the Campaign for a Smarter Britain for the deliverance of the scheme in South and North Yorkshire. Handypersons and needs, advice and support officers will work with the National Energy Awareness charity to spread awareness of the rollout of smart meters. This includes challenging myths and negative opinions surrounding the equipment. It is part of packed schedule of work for Yorkshire Housing’s South HIA that includes gas safety, hospital discharge, core local authority contracts and domestic violence projects. Judith Preston, South HIA needs, advice and support officer, is coordinating the smart meter scheme. She said: “Smart meters allow people to monitor the money they spend. People often think their appliances cost more to run than they do. But with a smart meter, they realise they can afford to put the heating on or use the washing machine. It also reduces the risk of an elderly person with limited mobility attempting to get a meter reading from somewhere inaccessible.” The grant runs from June to December 2019, and staff have a target of achieving 3,369 direct one-to-one customer conversations over that period.
They will also make 4,650 indirect interactions. To reach the targets, staff are going door-to-door, running town centre stalls and visiting dementia care settings and hospitals among other activities. The smart meters would be fitted by utility companies and our HIAs would refer interested customers to their supplier. The advantages of smart meters include:
• No estimated bills – you see exactly what energy you are using; • up-to-date information means you can switch for a better deal more confidently; • no longer need to send meter readings to your supplier; • the display can sit anywhere in your home; • no internet required – smart meters work in the same way as TVs; • they are free; • and they can be used with pre-pay meters and by those in rented homes.
online, by phone or in shops with the PayPoint sign and the funds added will show automatically on the display. Yorkshire Housing’s HIA teams will promote these benefits and tackle myths, such as smart meters stop working if a customer changes supplier. South HIA and internal adaptations manager Layla Walton said this could have been a problem with a previous generation of smart meter known as the SMETS1 model. She added: “Now there is a new version, the SMETS2, which means customers can change supplier and the smart meter will also change over automatically. Although people could still be issued with a SMETS1, there is a deadline in a year’s time for all the SMETS1s to have the same functionality, automatic change of supplier, as the SMETS2, so the issue will be resolved for any new customers receiving a SMETS1 model.”
Smart meters have two parts, the actual meter fitted to the supply installation and a separate display screen that be placed anywhere in a home. Customers can choose to see how much energy they are using either hourly, daily or monthly. The display screen shows, among other details, how much money a prepay account has left. Prepay customers can top up

FAST-TRACK YOUR CAREER INTO THE HEALTHCARE PROFESSION …WORK AS A PHLEBOTOMIST! An increasing demand for skilled healthcare professionals has led to a shortage of allied healthcare workers, especially phlebotomists - the skilled healthcare professionals who take your blood. Demand is at an all-time high with hospitals, clinics and GP Surgeries offering a golden opportunity for that “longed for” career change! If you have good people skills and manual dexterity, and like the idea of working in a busy healthcare environment, a phlebotomist job may be just the job for you! Many people enter this profession when they are looking for a career change or a fresh start and they often have no previous qualifications or experience in healthcare. Phlebotomists can work part time (usually mornings) but also may choose to work full
time as well as weekends, holidays and bank work. Blood samples are usually collected before mid-day and then analysed in your local hospital’s Path Lab in the afternoon. “We train people from all walks of life and all ages” explains Amy, Geopace office manager. “We’ve had school leavers, shop assistants, receptionists, beauticians and dental nurses, as well as telesales staff, unemployed and the retired who are looking for a challenge. We also have referrals from JobCentres (DWP), who can sometimes pay for your course in full if you are eligible” says Amy. Once you are on the healthcare career ladder there are often opportunities to progress into other areas, such as working in the hospital path lab or other departments. Promotion is much easier once you are “on the ladder” and have some experience behind you. Many Geopace students are now working as phlebotomists throughout the UK and a few have even chosen to work abroad where there is often a similar shortage and growing demand for this specialised skill. An interesting booklet featuring student’s “Success Stories” is written by the student’s themselves and looks at how they have made the move
from wide and varied backgrounds to find themselves now working as phlebotomists. A copy can be downloaded from the Geopace website’s testimonials page. If you like the idea of a challenging career in healthcare and particularly in phlebotomy then this may be the perfect move for you! The comprehensive training course last a full two days and culminates in the award of a nationally recognised and accredited certificate. “We practice taking blood from artificial arms”, says Amy “and everyone on our course has a lot of fun! We get a great deal of satisfaction later on when we hear from our students that they are working for their local GP surgery or in their local hospital.” Courses are running in Rotherham on Saturday & Sunday 10th & 11th August and places are very limited.

FRENCH STRIKER SMASHES TRANSFER RECORD
For the third time this summer, the Blades have smashed the club's transfer record. French striker Lys Mousset has signed a threedeal with the Blades after an undisclosed fee with AFC Bournemouth was reached for his services. He follows Luke Freeman and Callum Robinson in breaking United's transfer record and becomes United's fifth signing of the close season with Phil Jagielka and Ravel Morrison already part of Chris Wilder's plans. Of the latest recruit, boss Wilder comments: "Lys is big, quick and a different type of threat at the top of the pitch to what we already have.
TACTICAL TURNAROUND WAS KEY Lee Bullen pointed to a change in tactics that helped the Owls overturn a 2-0 deficit to beat Holstein Kiel 3-2 on Sunday afternoon. A Jordan Rhodes goal and two from Steven Fletcher secured victory for Wednesday in the friendly encounter in north Germany. out.stream powered by ADITION Bullen told swfc.co.uk: “We started with the 4-4-2 that has served us very well but it wasn’t quite working this afternoon. “We changed it to a 4-3-3 and it worked much
A SMOKE-FREE BRAMALL LANE
"I think he will prove to be a great fit for us and the fact that he selected us above other options shows he's hungry to do well. It is a fantastic bit of business for us in the current market and we are looking forward to him joining up with the squad." Born in Montvilliers, in the Normandy region of France, Mousset began his career at Le Havre, joining their academy in 2006 after playing locally. He then graduated to Le Havre II where he impressed scoring 14 goals in 57 appearances, before progressing into the first team at Stade Oceane, where he went on to net 14 times in 34 outings. In June 2016, the French U21 international joined Bournemouth for a fee in excess of £7 million and scored his first goal for the Cherries in the FA Cup against Wigan Athletic in January 2018 and has since made over 50 appearances on the south coast.
Sheffield United would like to kindly remind all supporters that in accordance with Premier League Ground Regulations, smoking is not permitted anywhere within Bramall Lane. This also includes the use of electronic cigarettes and vaporisers. This not only includes the inside of the stadium, but all other areas including toilets, concourses, stairwells, bars, restaurants and other corporate lounges, as well as the media areas. We would also like to remind supporters that there is no re-admittance to Bramall Lane, should any supporter wish to exit the stadium in order to smoke. Anyone found in breach of this rule will be subject to the Club’s disciplinary procedures, which may result in ejection from the stadium and/or possible further action by the club, including the withdrawal of any season ticket without reimbursement, the withdrawal of the right to purchase a ticket and a stadium ban. We appreciate the cooperation of all supporters regarding this matter.
better. We were more compact and saw much more of the ball. “We got the goal just before half time, which was the perfect time to score, and it gave us that lift and the platform to go on and win the game. “We controlled possession for most of the second half and I was pleased for the boys, they showed a lot of grit and deserved the win.” The SWFC contingent travel back to England on Monday and Bullen reflected positively on the six-day trip to Germany. He added: “It’s been good, very good. We’ve been well looked after and the two games have been very useful. “We played different teams who played in different ways and play in different divisions. “Overall, the trip has been a positive experience and we’ll head back home in a positive frame of mind.”
RHODES REDEMPTION JACK’S BACK AS ACADEMY CHIEF FAN COLUMN BY CHRIS PLATTS
If you believed the tabloids and social media then the only thing that is currently happening to Sheffield Wednesday at the moment is the Steve Bruce saga and a retro looking kit for the new season. However, quietly in the background the squad are still tirelessly preparing for the new season. After games against Lincoln City and Northampton Town, The Owls jetted off to Germany for games against VfB Lubeck and Holstein Kiel. During those games a promising strike partnership is beginning to flourish. With Steven Fletcher scoring 4 goals, and the returning Jordan Rhodes scoring 3 times. For most Owls fans this is a hopeful glimpse of what we were looking forward to when Rhodes signed for the club in the January transfer window back in 2017. Since then it has been a torrid time for the Scotland international. A lack of form, scoring just 10 goals in 55 appearances, led to his temporary departure to Norwich City at the beginning of 18/19 season. However, the incredible form of Teemu Pukki led to playing a bit part player in the clubs’ promotion to the premier league. A deal was thought to have been struck for him to stay at Carrow Road but nothing materialised so he returned to Hillsborough. Which could be seen as a blessing in disguise. Rhodes has looked sharp in pre-season. His link up play with Fletcher is looking like a real threat to any defence in the upcoming season. It really seems like we are going to see the best of Jordan Rhodes this season. Which could be seen as a shining light through the darkness of the managerial turmoil.
Former Blades striker Jack Lester is back with the club - heading up the famed SteelPhalt Academy, following recent changes to the management structure. Sheffield-born Jack is the new academy manager and will be based at Shirecliffe.
SWFC CLUB STATEMENT Following Newcastle United’s announcement on 17 July 2019 of its appointment of former Sheffield Wednesday staff Steve Bruce, Steve Agnew and Stephen Clemence, the Club confirms that it has today reported Newcastle United’s conduct to the Premier League. As the Premier League will now initiate and carry out investigations into the Club’s allegations, the Club will not be commenting further on this matter whilst such investigations are ongoing.
He said: “I’m delighted to be back with the club, being a Sheffield lad and a former player, this club is close to my heart and is great to be able to take the reins and continue the excellent work that has gone on at the SteelPhalt Academy over the years. “This academy has produced a tremendous amount of players who have gone on to represent the first team, play in the Premier League and play international football and it is the aim to continue this and to provide Chris Wilder and his coaching staff with young footballers who are worthy of pulling on the famous red and white shirt. “With the assistance of the dedicated staff, I’m looking forward to getting to know everyone at Shirecliffe in coming weeks and months.” United chief Wilder added: “I am fully behind the decision and Jack’s appointment is a positive move by the football club. It is important the club keeps
moving forward and developing in every area and this is a step in the right direction.” Lester, 43, scored 16 times in 31 starts for the Blades in 2003 and 2004 but suffered with a serious injury. He has also represented Grimsby Town, Nottingham Forest and Chesterfield with distinction before moving into coaching. He has worked in the academy systems at Notts County and Nottingham Forest and also managed Chesterfield, as well as working as assistant manager for the Welsh U21s squad. As part of the academy management changes there has been a number of departures, including Travis Binnion. Travis commented: “I would like to thank all my colleagues and young players, some of which I have worked with for a long time, for all of their support and hard work during my time with the club.”

MOORE RELISHING TESTS FOXES DANISH STOPPER AGAINST HUDDERSFIELD JOINS ON LOAN AND HULL Rotherham United can confirm the loan capture Darren Moore is looking forward to facing tougher opposition when they welcome Championship sides Hull City and Huddersfield Town to the Keepmoat Stadium. Huddersfield Town visit on Wednesday evening with Grant McCann’s Hull City set to visit on Saturday. Rovers have so far played lower league local opposition in the pre-season with trips to Gainsborough and Rossington, as well as facing Halifax behind closed doors before facing Grimsby Town at Blundell Park. “We’ve got some wonderful stern opposition coming into town – former Premier League team Huddersfield Town on Wednesday and Championship team Hull City on Saturday,” said Moore. “That’s what you want, really set the bar high In terms of preparation, the lads have got to be pushed outside their comfort zone and those two teams will provide a stern test.” Moore also stated that he’s set to turn up the pressure and the heat in his second week in charge. “I’ve only had a week with them, so we can’t be too hypercritical of them because I’ve seen improvements. The second week is to improve those, sharpen those and rubberstamp those,” he explained. “When I came in, I always wanted to look at these first ten days – that gave me two games and time so I could see the dynamic and balance of the team. Obviously, Saturday’s match gave me a lot more food for thought. “I’ve given everyone the opportunity in the last ten days so I can look at the squad - that includes the young players. I’ve been working with them all week and it’s been good to work with them on an individual basis too. I know what’s available, I know what’s there and we’ll continue to build on what we’ve started.” Tickets for both games can be purchased from the Club Doncaster Box Office by phoning 01302 762576
of Danish stopper Daniel Iversen from Leicester City, subject to EFL, Premier League and FA ratification. The 22-year-old goalkeeper has been a long-term target for the Millers this summer, who have successfully landed their man despite significant interest from around the EFL, on a deal which will see him ply his trade at AESSEAL New York Stadium until the end of the 2019/20 campaign. Iversen completed paperwork with the Millers on Monday afternoon and will join his new teammates ahead of tomorrow night’s hosting of West Bromwich Albion in a pre-season friendly. The Dane has represented his country throughout the ages at youth level and enjoyed a loan spell at Oldham Athletic which saw him turn out an impressive 49 times in league and cup competitions in 2018/19, before he jetted off to the Euro U21 Championships this summer. Iversen joins Lewis Price and Laurence Bilboe amongst the professional goalkeepers at AESSEAL New York Stadium.
AJAYI DEAL SUITED ALL PARTIES WARNE
Rotherham United boss Paul Warne says it is with a heavy heart that he allowed defender Semi Ajayi to depart AESSEAL New York Stadium, but explains that West Brom’s final offer meant that the deal was right for all parties. Warne has been influential in nurturing the former Arsenal and Charlton Athletic man’s talents after he joined the club from Cardiff City and witnessed Ajayi help himself to eight goals last season, in a more advanced role in midfield. Following confirmation of Ajayi’s move to the Baggies, Warne expressed his feelings to www. themillers.co.uk: “He goes, from my point of view, with a heavy heart because I lose a great player and a good person, but I can understand the pull of the Championship and West Brom. “He was in the last year of his contract, so it was understandable and good business from the club to allow him to move on. “There has been offers coming in for him in the sum-

ANGLER’S CORNER
with Clint Walker
After an enforced break from the bank, I’ve been back at it this week on a thoroughly enjoyable session to a tiny river on the Stoke-on-Trent Angling Society ticket. The River Sow runs through Great Bridgeford near Stafford, and it’s the kind of river where fighting your way through brambles, stinging nettles and more is required to just get down to the bank in places, but the swim I chose is a bubbling pool with easier access, but it did come with uninvited guests! I arrived early, quickly unloading the van, dumping my seatbox, an unhooking mat and nets onto my little two wheeled trolley before grabbing the rod bag and starting the short walk down the road to the style where it was all quickly humped over into the field next to the river. The early morning mist rose off the tiny stream as I carefully picked my way between slippery, smelly bovine booby traps, and I soon reached the head of the pool where crystal clear waters tumbled over the remains of a broken millrace before emptying downstream. I’ve fished it a few times previously, often with light lure gear, but I’ve always wanted to stand at the head of the pool and watch a float twirl downstream before sailing away. For once, I’d remembered my waders, so slipped them on before tackling up a float rod and centrepin reel; perfect! I still use some of the old Ivan Marks stick floats which I managed to find at a car boot sale some time ago, so selected a red tipped 3BB version, slid it between the rubbers and carefully plumbed up so my bait would just trip the riverbed. A quick splash of water into my Spotted Fin Dark Superblend groundbait gave a good stiff mix and I added a good number of maggots to provide substance. I opted for the darker mix as the water was clear, and this particular groundbait has little food content, so would act merely as a carrier for the maggots which I wanted on the bottom. Two tiny nuggets of bait were introduced, and I nicked on a pair of maggots before lowering the float in and allowing it to spiral gently downstream… The red tip tumbled along nicely, held straight

mer from a few Championship clubs and we wanted to make sure we did the best we could for the club. “The player was understandably attracted by the offer and it was fair business all around really, the club wanted to take the offer and we have. “He came in as a very shy lad and was very raw. He did have the attributes I like, in that, he was athletic and he wanted to learn. “He was pivotal in our promotion season and then he did really well to be pushed into midfield and score eight goals last year. He was one of the unfortunate players to be involved in a relegation season, which was through no fault of his own. “He can play in a lot of positions and it is a massive blow for all of us at the football club that he has moved on but unless you’re the richest club in the country, your best players are always in danger of being picked off. “The good thing is with him and Will [Vaulks] is that the players that are here and the players we are trying to sign can see what can happen if they progress and play at this great club, then they’ve got a chance to move on after a few good seasons and forge out an even better career but also in the meantime helping us. “He’s a really great guy and an educated kid and I have no doubt that he’ll be a great addition to West Brom. Our job now is to find players who can develop and do the same thing that Semi has done for us over the last few years.”
by barely applied tension on the spool of the centrepin and it meandered gently away from me towards overhanging trees. Just before it got there, it disappeared, and the first fish of the day, a trusty perch, was soon kicking back towards me. It skittered over the surface, was quickly unhooked and returned before a pinch of maggots and the float were gently dropped back in. After an hour or so of catching perch and odd roach, I decided that I fancied a different approach, so moved around the pool and set up a delicate link leger with just enough weight to hold bottom. I’d been steadily building the bait in the swim, but I thought that fish may have been waiting behind the overhanging tree rather than in front so need to change my angle of attack. I felt a feeder or bomb would have been too intrusive on such a tight venue where stealth was required to avoid clearing the swim of all fish, so a few SSG were pinched onto a short length of hooklink, looped onto a link swivel and stopped by a shot. It’s perhaps one of the most simple ways to construct a leger rig, but I rarely see it used for some reason. I have no idea why, it’s subtle, easy, unobtrusive and if it gets snagged, can be pulled until the trapped shot slides off the line to release without needing to tackle up again… ideal for small river fishing. It was flicked out to settle behind the tree, the rod tip rested high on the rest to avoid surface weed and flow and I sat back to wait. A pouch of maggots was catapulted upstream and as I set the ‘pult down, the bites started. First out was another perch, a feisty opponent of around six ounces, palm sized and full

of fight, followed by another, then another as they fought over the maggots fluttering downstream. I missed a superfast bite, the ‘tip trembling quickly before a fourth perch muscled in and picked up the bait, but my next cast saw a pristine roach of almost half a pound knock the ‘tip around and come struggling ashore. I was having fun (isn’t that what fishing should be about?) as I watched squirrels chase through overhead branches above me, and glimpsed the flash of cobalt as a kingfisher flitted downstream to my left whilst the rod tip continued to twitch and flex as fish after fish tripped up. A little bit more groundbait topped things up, and a much more positive bite saw the first of a few bonus chub pushing in, before normal service was resumed and a steady stream of pretty roach and perch kept me busy. A couple of hours into the session and the heavens opened so I hid beneath my brolly, trying to keep out of the worst of it. As I stared at the quivertip, I hadn’t noticed

intruders lurking, so almost jumped out of my skin when a loud snort sent a spray of lukewarm drizzle down my neck from point blank range! I’d been so intent on the fishing that I’d failed to notice that the field was inhabited by eight heifers whose inquisitiveness had seen them surround me behind the umbrella until one stuck it’s nose beneath the nylon to sniff at me where it sneezed covering me in sticky snot! Luckily, I have no fear of cattle and after I’d recovered, scratched a few noses until they got bored and wandered off leaving me to pack up in the rain. It was time to go. In a little over four hours, I’d plundered the swim of roach, perch and chub, catching noting over a pound in weight, but I’ll tell you this… it was great fun and lovely to get back to basics on a beautiful little river… You should try it too!
