CRYSTAL PEAKS BEATING RETAIL TRENDS Award winning Sheffield shopping centre Crystal Peaks is enjoying continued success with a raft of new lettings seeing the mall heading for trend-beating occupancy levels during 2019. Among the current new arrivals at the centre are The Pud Store, which has taken a 1,180 sq ft unit. The new concept in affordable and discounted children’s fashion is the brainchild of young entrepreneur Frances Bishop, best known for her appearance in the twelfth season of BBC hit The Apprentice. Another family friendly
business coming to Crystal Peaks is Toytown, the family owned toy shop chain and currently one of the largest independent toy retailers in the UK. The company’s 8,000 sq ft unit is the company’s 29th store, and its fifth new opening this year. Toytown was the winner of the 2016 Specialist Multiple Toy Retailer of the Year award, the 2017 Specialist Multiple Retailer of the Year and the 2017 Overall Toy Retailer of the Year, while in 2018 it was shortlisted again as Specialist Multiple Toy Retailer of the Year. New discount brand One
Below opened in a 5,500 sq ft unit in the Crystal Peaks east mall in the spring as part of a major expansion plan which sees the Barnsley-based business aiming to open 50 stores across the UK this year. A further success has been independent menswear store Boardroom, stocking a range of top fashion brands in its 2,900 sq ft Crystal Peaks unit as well as a recently launched own brand label. The new arrivals join a host of established names, including Sainsburys, Marks & Spencer, WH Smith, Bonmarche, Burton, Clarks, Claire’s,
Iceland, Greggs, Next, Peacocks, Superdrug and Thorntons. And in line with the Crystal Peaks approach to family friendly shopping, the Centre is also introducing a new free soft play facility to further enhance dwell time and interaction. It is an approach that has seen the complex continue to attract over 10 million visitors per year. Centre manager Lee Greenwood commented: “We are delighted that during such a challenging period for retail Crystal Peaks continues to prove popular with both businesses wanting to join
us and, of course, with our shoppers. “We are very pleased that independent companies like The Pud Store and Boardroom are joining our bigger names, bringing a much greater range of shopping opportunities to our customers. “And, of course, the Crystal Peaks Marketplace continues to be a home for smaller independent traders and a very popular attraction as we celebrate Independent Retailer month this July. “Crystal Peaks is very much at the heart of the communities it serves and the needs of our visitors are always front of mind as we ensure we continue to stay relevant, sustainable and flexible.”

DON’T LOSE YOUR RIGHT TO VOTE Residents are being urged not to lose their right to vote as the annual electoral canvass begins. Over the next two weeks all Rotherham households will be getting a letter through their door asking them to confirm who is eligible to vote in the property. This means they can then be included on the new Register of Electors which will
be published on 1 December 2019. Next May will see all Council seats in Rotherham up for the public vote as well as Parish, Town Council and the Police and Crime Commissioner elections taking place. Therefore this is an important opportunity for residents to make sure they can take part in these elections. The form ensures that Rotherham Council can keep the electoral
register up to date and identify any residents who are not registered so that they can be encouraged to do so. Sharon Kemp, Rotherham Council’s Chief Executive and Returning Officer said: “We need people’s help to make sure we have everyone registered to vote who is eligible. “It’s important that residents respond as soon as possible, so we can make
sure we have the right details on the electoral register for every address in the borough. The next schedules elections take place in May 2020, so make sure you can have your say at the elections. Simply check the form when it arrives and respond as soon as you can.” Residents should respond to the Household Enquiry Form whether
there are changes to the information it contains or not. If forms are not returned, reminders will be sent and a canvasser may be sent out to help make sure residents return the form. If any new people have been added to a household enquiry form, they must now register to vote themselves; they can now go online to register themselves or

I went to Currys last night and asked the sales assistant for someone to help me with a toaster. He said Kenwood. My wife is furious at me for buying an expensive make-your-own-perfume kit. But it just made scents to me. When I turned 16, my dad told me it was time to get a job. “When I was your age, my very first job I had I worked with over 500 people under me.”... “Wow,” I asked. “Did you work in some big corporation?” “No!” He said, “I mowed the lawn in a cemetery.” I was walking past a farm and a sign said ‘Duck, eggs’. I thought: “That’s an unnecessary comma - and then it hit me.” Three weeks ago I sent my hearing aids in for repair. I’ve heard nothing since.

COULD YOU CREATE A NEW IMAGE FOR RADIO’S PAULETTE? Artists from across the region are invited to take part in this year’s Portrait of Distinction competition, which will feature at September’s Art in the Gardens festival. will use as the basis of their own piece of artwork to be exhibited at Art in the Gardens; the largest outdoor art show in the North of England. Copies of Paulette’s photo are now available to collect from Sheffield Town Hall reception. The winning portrait will be chosen by Paulette at the annual Art in the Gardens event, which will take place at the Botanical Gardens on Saturday 7th and Sunday 8th September. Councillor Mary Lea, Cabinet Member for Culture, Parks and Leisure at Sheffield City Council, said: “Art in the Gardens is a fantastic event which celebrates and highlights the brilliantly diverse, artistic talent in Sheffield. “The Portraits of Distinction competition creates a unique exhibition that I’d encourage everyone

to get involved in and take the opportunity to showcase their work.” With thousands of visitors expected to attend across the weekend, over 360 artists and craft makers are exhibiting more than 5000 pieces of work at this year’s festival. Paulette Edwards, who sat for her portrait in the Botanical Gardens, said: “I am not much of an artist myself, but have admired the work at Art in the Gardens for years so I’m thrilled to be a part of this. “I’m excited and slightly nervous about how I will look on canvas; I hope the painters will show compassion as well as obvious talent! “I’m hoping I come out looking like a combination of Oprah and Wonder Woman.” Professional artist and photographer Trevor Neal said: “Paulette was a treat to work with and gave generously of her time in and around the beautiful Sheffield Botanical Gardens. “The location provided a wonderful backdrop to our two-hour photo shoot and Paulette is such a wonderful and interesting character, I’m sure this will be a very enjoyable and challenging task for the participating artists.”
Alongside an array of artwork and sculptures, Art in the Gardens will also include exhibitions of photography, jewellery, glasswork, ceramics and print making. There is also a dedicated Home and Gardens area with award winning garden designer Phil Hirst and other wonderful exhibitors, an Open Art Exhibition, a bustling market and the Botanical Gardens themselves to explore and enjoy. how to tell if you’re suffering from stress All of us can feel stressed from time to time, in fact, it is normal to do so, but if stress levels are left to build up then it can impact on our daily lives, affecting both our mental and physical health. There are a multitude of factors that can lead to us feeling stressed with relationship issues, finances, difficulties at home or pressures at work being just a few of the most common. Stress can alter the way we behave, think, feel and also how our body functions with symptoms manifesting themselves in many ways from having difficulty sleeping, feeling anxious, low self-esteem, changes in eating and drinking habits, feeling angry to muscle tension and headaches. Feeling under pressure, angry and irritable and generally unable to cope are all early signs of stress, so it is important to recognise the way we are feeling and act early to reduce stress levels before its effects become unmanageable. How can I help myself to relieve stress? There are lots of ways to help yourself to de-stress but here are a few to try: • Manage your time and workload – there are many techniques that you can use to help you if you feel that work pressure is contributing to the feelings you are experiencing and making a to-do list is
just one of them – so go on – do a little research and brush up on your time management skills. • Make time to exercise – along with making you fitter, exercise gives a fantastic boost to your mental health. If you’re not sure how to start then take a look at our article keen to start running. • Take some time out – it’s important to take time to do something you enjoy for at least a few minutes every day or for longer once or twice a week – whether it is reading a good book, gardening, having lunch with a friend – anything that makes you relax will help. • Learn how to relax – practice relaxation techniques or join a yoga class – it will really help you to de-stress and build your resilience. Read more on how to practice mindful breathing. • It’s good to talk – simply talking things through with someone helps to put things in perspective, whether it be a friend, family member or your GP. If you are unsure about talking with someone face to face then there are online charity forums where you can communicate with others going through similar things. Could I be depressed? Depression can occur as a reaction to stress. Depression, like stress, can be self-managed and there are lots of tips
available to help. If you feel you may be depressed you can do a useful test at home to assess for depression. Find the link in the NHS’s Moodzone. The test is similar to those carried out by GPs to diagnose and monitor treatment for mental health conditions. Should I see my GP? It is advisable to see your GP if you feel that you may be suffering from depression. Your GP can assess you physically, emotionally and mentally and can then refer you on to specialists if necessary. Your GP may also want to undertake some tests to rule out conditions such as hormone deficiencies, anaemia and thyroid function as these carry similar symptoms. If you do need more help there are a number of effective treatment options available, including medication, counselling and cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT). If your GP recommends that you should be seen by a counsellor or psychologist they will refer you to a suitable provider, however, as an alternative you may wish to go through the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) where you will find information on types of therapy and a registered practitioner near you, but this would be a self-funded service.
don’t be a victim of telephone fraud Fraud is a hidden and under-reported crime with victims often in denial or unaware of the criminality behind it. Increasingly fraud is becoming more complex and sophisticated, much of which is targeted at vulnerable and elderly people. Andy Foster, Fraud PROTECT Officer with South Yorkshire Police says “In all my career working with older people, the one thing they always have is a land line. Social isolation and loneliness can make people more vulnerable because If someone knocks at their door or the telephone rings, they are more likely to answer it” The nature of fraud victimisation is not only financial. The emotional impact is significant and includes guilt, misplaced trust and diminished confidence, resulting in detrimental effects on physical and mental health and increased social isolation. Some tips below will help you reduce the risk of becoming a victim of telephone fraud. • Criminals call pretending to be from you bank or building society or the police claiming a fraudulent payment has been spotted on your card or you credit card has been cloned. They may ask for your card pin number and to ring back. Do not give this out and do not call back, put the phone down and inform the police. • You receive a call from Microsoft or other large IT company informing you that your computer has a virus. You are asked to download software onto your machine to fix it and then provide your card details. Keep calm, hang up. Keep your anti-virus software up to date, warn others about the call. • A call from a charity asking if you will donate to their cause by setting up a direct debit, not necessarily a fraud
attempt but more a nuisance call perhaps. If you do agree then you will receive further calls asking for more money. Never give your card details out over the phone. • You receive a call from someone saying they are from HRMC claiming there is an issue with an unpaid tax bill. Do not engage with the caller and end the conversation immediately. • BT Phone Scam – you receive a call from someone claiming to be from BT, they may say there is a problem with your internet connection or phone line and if you do not pay a fee they will cut you off. How to prevent unwanted telephone calls: There any many call blocking options available, some are free of charge. Anyone receiving unsolicited calls via their home phone should contact their telephone provider and ask them if they provide a free call blocking service. BT, Talk Talk and Sky all provide free call blocking services that can prevent unwanted calls reaching vulnerable people. Alternatively, call blocking devices and replacement telephones with call blocking software pre-installed are available to purchase: BT provide customers with a free call blocking service, known as ‘Call Protect’, and Sky have their own version called Talk Shield. Truecall is a standalone call blocker, once installed it sits in the background, the user does not have to do anything, ideal for those with memory problems. Used and endorsed by many police forces and Trading Standards across the UK. A further option would be to replace your old telephone with a BT telephone with Truecall software pre- installed. There are many available to purchase via on
line or larger retail outlets such as Argos. Resurfacing on one of the city’s busiest main routes is set to begin next month, as the final stage of improvements get underway. Following successful removal of the traffic tidal system and overhead gantries on Queens Road earlier this month, resurfacing is now scheduled for early August. After nearly 30 years in operation, the old traffic management system has been replaced with a new road layout, which includes two full-time inbound and outbound lanes. The work, being carried out by Amey Streets Ahead, will begin the week commencing Monday 5th August and will last for approximately three weeks, upgrading sections of Queens Road and London Road. The resurfacing will take place in three stages and include a combination of night and weekend working,
outside of normal business hours, to help minimise disruption. The three phases are: • Queens Road, section between Charlotte Road and London Road (excluding junctions with London Road, Alderson Road and London Road) Closed overnight, Monday to Friday, 8pm to 5am. • Queens Road junctions with London Road, Myrtle Road and Alderson Road Weekend closures will be required from 8pm Saturday until 5am Monday. Two-way traffic will be maintained outside of working hours. Lane closures will be necessary during phases 1 and 2 and junctions will be available for use throughout the working week. • London Road from Sark Road to Wolseley Road Road closed overnight from 8pm to 5am. Full traffic flow will be maintained outside of working hours.
Melissa Wise, Operations Director at Streets Ahead said: “Stage one of the project on Queens Road went really well and we were able to effectively manage traffic flow whilst the old gantries were removed safely. “This is one of the busiest roads in and out of the city and we appreciate that roadworks can be frustrating but we will make every effort to reduce disruption during the resurfacing by working overnight and at weekends over the school holidays. “During this time, we ask that everyone follows the diversions in place and takes extra care when travelling through the area.” The road and lane closures during these works mean there will be no on-street parking in the three phases of work detailed above. Residents and businesses can speak to the on-site supervisors should
they require vehicle access to their property during working hours. Cabinet member for Environment and Street Scene at Sheffield City Council, Councillor Lewis Dagnall said: “Whilst I know that projects of this scale can often cause unavoidable disruption, once complete, the new road layout and surface on Queens Road will make a huge difference to both local residents and commuters, travelling in and out of the city. “Both in my position as cabinet member and as a local councillor for the neighbouring areas, I would like to say a big thank you to residents for their continued patience whilst these vital improvements are underway.” To find out more about the Streets Ahead resurfacing programme visit: www.sheffield.gov.uk/ streetsahead

CROOKES CLUB TURNS 100! Crookes Club is celebrating its 100year anniversary this summer with a weekend-long music festival and family fun day, from 9 – 11 August. As part of the event, the club is inviting descendants of the club’s original members to attend as VIP guests, after discovering
centuries-old record books of the club’s first investors. Maurice Champeau, General Manager of the club, said: “I never expected to find these books. I just didn’t think they existed and for me that was a real eye opener. “What has surprised me is how much money and how many members of
Some of the historical record books
the local community invested in the opening of this place. We have literally hundreds of people who have all put in a pound or two. “There’s a chap that invested £30 in 1919, which is about the equivalent of 20 grand now. That was his own cash that he put into the building and the opening of this place, and it’s people like that who made it all happen in the first place.” The search had been on for the club’s very first member, Horrace Bottom, who lived in Crookes in 1920, however it was discovered Mr. Bottom died in the war with no children, and they are now searching for the
descendants of George Jackson, another investor of the club. Maurice added: “People think it’s quite strange when you ring them up completely out of the blue, asking for a great great great grandfather,
I don’t even know how many generations’ great. “So that’s the first thing we did. Another thing I’ve done a lot of is searching for newspaper archives. I’ve been able to identify all the people in some of the photos.
I’ve spent hours on it, doing Internet searches for everybody.” Thanks to Maurice’s searches, an incredible roster of ‘turns’ at the club’s comedy nights has been revealed, including

Def Leppard, who are as Maurice put it, ‘one of the biggest exports Sheffield has ever had,’ also had their first paid performance in the club and will contribute to the event by sending signed merchandise. The event itself will include an outdoor beach for children that will take up part
of the car park, as children of the club have historically been taken to the beach once a year, an idea that was left behind due to costs and health and safety risks. There will also be live music from local bands, ice cream vans, a punch and Judy show, petting zoo and bowling contest in support of Sheffield
Children’s Hospital Charity. Maurice added: “The archives are very fragile and irreplaceable, and what really frustrates me is that a lot of these were thrown away, because there should be books like these for every five years, but there are only two books. It could be because of historically questionable financial mismanagement. It’s helpful for people if there
are no records, because there’s nothing to prove anything with. “It’s quite sad, because it would be lovely to have such information open to people to look at. I’d love to be able to see what entertainment they had in the first six months and decades later, and to see how entertainment ideas have changed.” “But to have it all in the beautiful handwriting that it is in, the perfect
calligraphy, the full details of when their money came in and when their money was paid back, it’s gold. I feel very lucky and privileged
to have found something that a hundred years ago somebody took a pen out and started writing all of these. The most important thing is
that the first, most precious one, is still there.” The tickets cost £5 for nonmembers and is free for members.

RANKED #1 OUT OF 119 IN SHEFFIELD FOR NIGHTLIFE “...Good beer, local real ale. The staff were excellent and very attentive. Dance floor was spot on and there was plenty of seating available. All in all a great venue for a party.” RACHEL D.
“This is a perfect example of how a club should be run, the management are brilliant and always helpful, the staff are always smiling and attentive, they have live music every Saturday and a massive function room for hire, they also have smaller rooms for the more personal gatherings... ” CRACKER DUO.
“What a super place Crookes Social Club is. A former working men’s club with original period features,a spacious hall with comfy seating, a stage & sprung wooden dance floor. The bar is great too with friendly staff and local beers. They do a good cuppa too!” CATE M.

HENDO’S BACK
The formalities of the deal to bring Dean Henderson back to be Bramall Lane have been completed - much to the delight of the goalkeeper and Chris Wilder. The 22-year-old has signed a season-long loan deal with the Blades following discussions with his parent club, Manchester United. As can be seen in the video above, Henderson is delighted to return after his exploits last season and boss Wilder is equally thrilled. “Dean was always our number one target,” said Wilder. “We’ve had to fight to get a good deal and that’s part and parcel of our approach in the transfer market. All of us, from myself, to the coaching staff, to the player and the supporters want him playing for us in the Premier League and with a lot of hard work
we’ve made that happen.” Prior to joining the Blades for the entirety of the 2018/19 season, Henderson had furthered his footballing development with successful loan spells at Shrewsbury Town and Grimsby Town. Henderson was an ever-present between the sticks in United’s promotion-winning campaign last season, making a number of crucial saves at key times. The 22-year-old kept a total of 21 clean sheets last term, which saw him win the Sky Bet Championship Golden Glove award. The fans’ favourite firmly established himself as number one for England’s U21s and started all three group games for Aidy Boothroyd’s Young Lions in the European Championships earlier this summer. He is the seventh summer signing, following Luke Freeman, Phil Jagielka, Callum Robinson, Ravel Morrison, Lys Mousset and Ben Osborn into Bramall Lane.
BULLEN IN CONTROL HARRIS PLEASED WITH OF SEASON OPENER OWLS PRE-SEASON FAN COLUMN BY CHRIS PLATTS It has been confirmed that Lee Bullen will be in charge of the Owls in the season opener against Reading. With no sign of a successor to Steve Bruce being confirmed any time soon, it looks like Bullen has been given the chance to prove he is up to the job of being Wednesday head coach full time. It’s not the first time Bullen has been in charge having taken over on a temporary basis twice before after the departure of Carvahal and Luhukay. However, this time it seems as though he is being time to prove that he is the man for the job. Bullen himself has no hidden the fact that he would like the job on a permanent basis. Saying in an interview earlier in the week; “I know exactly what the club is about. I know exactly what the fans are about. I know exactly what the chairman’s about. I know these players and the Championship inside out. When it comes to that experience it’s great, but the chairman has got a big decision to make.” For fans it’s a mixed feeling over him taking charge. With the majority in agreement that it is good for the club that he sticks around, it is only a minority that feel that he would be good in the job. The fans choice is still Chris Hughton, who is still being heavily backed by the bookies, who have suspended betting on him taking charge. Whoever it is who will take charge on a permanent basis, it is certain that they will be given the full support of the Owls support, as we venture into what we hope is a successful season.
Owls winger Kadeem Harris is looking forward to starting the new campaign this weekend after a productive first pre-season with Wednesday. The pacey wideman moved to S6 from Cardiff this summer on a free transfer and is pleased with how well he has settled into the group. Harris said: “The boys have been brilliant in preseason. “We’ve worked very hard and overcome every obstacle in front of us. “I think it’s a great bunch of lads here, it was easy to settle in. They’ve made me, and the other new boys, feel really welcome.” The 26-year-old had his first taste of Hillsborough in a Wednesday shirt on Sunday in a 2-2 draw with Spanish outfit Espanyol and is looking forward to playing regularly at the Owls’ home of 120 years. He added: “I’ve played at Hillsborough a couple of times before. “It’s a great place to play if it’s your home, but a horrible place if you’re on the opposition side! “I’m looking forward to seeing Hillsborough jumping and bouncing at the first home game, and hopefully for the rest of the season.”
BEN IS A BLADE Summer signing number six is in the building... Ben Osborn is a Blade. “We are delighted that he is a Sheffield United player,” said boss Chris Wilder, who has swooped into the Championship for a third time for a signing following similar moves for Luke Freeman and
LESSONS LEARNED Lee Bullen says the Owls learned valuable lessons following the 2-2 draw with Espanyol at Hillsborough on Sunday. An entertaining friendly encounter saw cracking goals at both ends, with each side probably deserving a share of the spoils. Wednesday created most of the chances but the La Liga side struck two superb hits to secure a draw. Bullen said: “It was a really enjoyable game and I think we’ve learned some lessons today. “It’s not often you come up against a team from Europe playing in the top division so these are really valuable experiences. “We dominated most of the game but credit to Espanyol because they’ve scored two fantastic goals. “We know what these games are all about, we know why we are playing them and it all counts towards that first one of the season against Reading.” With the Owls’ summer schedule now complete, Bullen insists the squad is in great shape, mentally and physically, ahead of Saturday’s Championship curtain raiser at the Madejski. He added: “The players are doing really well on all fronts and they are ready to go at Reading on Saturday. “If I am in charge on Saturday – and football can change very, very quickly – then it’s going to be a heck of a job picking the squad, never mind the team. “There’s going to be some players who unfortunately we will have to leave at home and they will be entitled to be very disappointed. “But that’s a reflection on how good the boys have been doing and how they are bursting to get this season started.”
Callum Robinson. “He’s been a fantastic player for Forest in the Championship and I know for certain that two or three clubs in January were sniffing around to take him. He’s got a lot of attributes that will help us, going forward, and we’re looking forward to him pulling on a red and white shirt. “Ben is an intelligent footballer, he plays a number of positions and has got that attitude that he will slot in wherever. But he’ll want to nail down a position and he’s going to put enormous pressure on a few of our players who might think they’re cemented into the team and that’s how it’s got to be, I’ve said all along, it raises everybody’s standards. We are putting together a group that’s got to be competitive in arguably the best division in the world. “We’re not getting flustered with people talking about where we are getting our players from, we’re delighted with the work we’ve done, I’m really excited and seeing the players we’ve got in the building already,
from Jags to the likes of Ravel (Morrison), Lys Mousset, Callum Robinson, Luke Freeman and now Ben Osborn.” Derby-born Osborn started his career with the Rams, before joining Forest’s Academy at the age of nine. Deployed mainly as a left-back during his first season in the U18s, Osborn was voted the Reds Academy Player of the Year, earning himself a new contract in the process in April 2012. Osborn was promoted to Forest’s first team and
made his debut in March 2014 against Ipswich Town. Capped by England at various youth levels, Osborn has become one of the Championship most consistent performers in his position and offers versatility. During his decade at the City Ground, Osborn has made over 200 appearances, scoring 15 goals. Osborn signs a three year deal after an undisclosed fee was agreed with Nottingham Forest.

MOORE PRAISES MOORE EXCITED TO SEE SQUAD’S ATTITUDE AND DEDICATION DIENG DEVELOP Darren Moore is looking forward to watching Seny Dieng develop as the Senegalese international joined on loan from Queens Park Rangers last week. Dieng completed 90 minutes in his first game for Rovers during a 2-2 draw with Hull City in the clubs final pre-season friendly. Moore said: “We’re delighted to bring Seny to the club because I think he’ll be good competition for Ian Lawlor. We have two top keepers and they’ll compete and battle it out with each other for that number one spot which is what we want. “I think he is one for the future because he is remarkable at shot-stopping, he comes for crosses and is really comfortable with the ball at his feet which we saw against Hull. “He brings calmness and composure which you can see goes right through the team when your keeper is as calm and composed at commanding his box like that. It breeds confidence through the team.”
Darren Moore has praised the Rovers’ squad attitude and work ethic after the clubs pre-season preparations concluded with a draw against Sky Bet Championship side Hull City. Rovers put in a performance to be proud of against opposition from the league above after goals from James Coppinger and new signing Madger Gomes rounded-off a productive month of pre-season games. Moore said: “The performance was a
TREVOR CLARKE MAKES MILLERS MOVE Rotherham United Football Club are delighted to announce the signing of Trevor Clarke from League of Ireland Premier Division side, Shamrock Rovers, and the 21-year-old has signed a three-year deal at the AESSEAL New York Stadium, subject to international clearance. The versatile defender was a regular fixture for the Hoops and he registered just short of 100 appearances during his four-year stay at
continuation from Wednesday evening. Once we got to grips with the game after the opening period, I felt we controlled the game right the way until the end. “They’re disappointed they haven’t won the game but the biggest thing for me in pre-season is the performance. It was the best performance I’ve seen so far because the balance of the team was better and the understanding of the work we’ve put in was better. “Saturday was a stamp mark for how I want to play and how we want to go as a team. We set the formula but the players have to bring their ability, which they did today. It was good to see a good understanding and connection along with some fluidity which provided a cuttingedge.” The boss was delighted with the fitness levels of his players which he believes is a testament

to their work ethic. He added: “Their fitness levels are second-tonone and as a group they train well everyday. From the moment they step foot in Cantley Park they train well and that adds to the fitness levels. Today I was very pleased with their overall physical condition. “They’ll be in good shape for next week and we’ll do some more work on the training ground in preparation. I’m pleased that we get a clear week where we can just focus on working the entire time and preparing for Gillingham.” The 2019/20 season begins on Saturday August 3. the club, meaning he has plenty of first-team experience despite his age. He has represented the Republic of Ireland at Under 16, Under 17 and Under 19 level, and he was called up into the Under 21 squad last year. Clarke was also named as the PFAI Young Player of the Year in 2017, as well as picking up the Shamrock Rovers Young Player of the Year accolade on two occasions. Once on the books at Middlesbrough as a youth player before returning to Ireland, Clarke is now eager to stamp his mark on English football and he will be looking to fight for a place in Paul Warne’s squad ahead of the 2019/20 Sky Bet League One campaign.

ANGLER’S CORNER
with Clint Walker
What a week it’s been weather wise! Blisteringly hot with some astonishing thunderstorms, and yet still some anglers are daft enough to venture out in it! I’m always torn between fishing and staying at home when the weather is like that, mainly because I enjoy a bit of sunshine, but I’m also aware that conditions can lead to a massive oxygen crash with the potential to wipe out most of the stock (if not all) and I don’t want to add to the stress factor by trying to catch them as well! I don’t think it’s much good for the fish if they are caught during times when there is a diminishing amount of dissolved oxygen, so I tend to wait until the hot weather has passed… Despite not doing much fishing, I’ve been by the water just watching and baiting up. It’s very tempting to take a refreshing dip too, but as a former fire and rescue swiftwater rescue instructor, I know the perils which lurk beneath the surface, so I don’t go in; sadly others don’t have the same knowledge, and already the press coverage and television news have featured tragedy… It happens every year, and if I’m truthful, in my younger days, I’ve succumbed to temptation and swum in numerous rivers and lakes when the summer sun became unbearable, so I shouldn’t preach, but open water is dangerous! I can recount many instances where I’ve been called to assist someone in distress, and on every occasion, it became a recovery, not a rescue. It won’t happen to you though will it? You can swim, so have nothing to fear… I guarantee that every soul I’ve dragged from the depths thought exactly the same thing. Until it does… and I warn you now, by the
time you realise you’re in trouble, it will be too late, and you’ll drown alone, and with an awful realisation that it shouldn’t have happened... Immersion in cold water can lead to cold shock, a crushing syndrome where your own body fights against you, preventing the expansion of your lungs to take in life saving air, rapidly leading to panic, flailing, splashing, which gets weaker as every second passes. Unconsciousness comes mercifully, and then you’ll never know another thing about it… After a number of hours, once death has occurred, decomposition leads to gases within the body expanding and you may eventually float to the surface. Often this will be prevented by the tangle of weeds, reeds and other debris beneath the surface, which means that your body will be recovered, either by the fire service boat teams or police divers, pale, wrapped in greenery, perhaps if you’ve been down there long enough, in pieces as fish and wildlife enjoy the bounty, or bacteria weakens the flesh which then falls apart. I know, I’ve been there. I’ve turned the floating body over to reveal a gaping hole where the face used to be, recoiling at the stench as I’ve slipped into the water next to it to secure the unfortunate man to the boat. I’ve dragged grappling

irons through the underwater tangle in hope of snagging a sleeve or a hood, bringing the youngster to the surface under the devastated gaze of his parents and I’ve swum through floating clouds of sloughing skin as the body is disturbed and starts to break down whilst I try to hold the slippery hand which drifts away from me… I’ve slipped the remains into the bag before the private ambulance transportation to the mortuary where your family will have to identify you… but it won’t happen to you will it? Every single person I’ve recovered thought that, but it did, and they won’t get chance to

tell others that they shouldn’t swim, so I’m doing it for them. I’m doing it for your family too, so they don’t have to view you on the slab beneath the sheet… As anglers, we spend a lot of time by the lake or river and it is tempting… just to take off the sticky boots and socks, dip your toes into the cool waters… and that’s where it all starts to go wrong… do yourself and your family a favour; don’t take the risk!
