SHEFFIELD SET TO BENEFIT FROM THE UK’S FASTEST BROADBAND SPEEDS Openreach, the UK’s digital infrastructure company, this week announced Sheffield as one of 36 towns and cities that are set to benefit from Openreach’s rollout of some of the fastest broadband speeds in the UK. In Sheffield, new Fibreto-the-Premises (FTTP) technology, where fibre is laid all the way from the exchange to people’s front doors, is heading over the next 12 months. Tens of thousands of residents and businesses are expected to benefit with work to build the new network will start
early next year following a period of planning and surveying. The work by Openreach, the UK’s largest telephone and broadband network, will complement the ongoing fibre broadband roll-out by the Superfast South Yorkshire programme, a partnership between the four South Yorkshire local authorities, UK Government and Openreach. Councillor Olivia Blake, deputy leader of Sheffield City Council, said: “Sheffield is well covered by superfast broadband, over 96% of homes and businesses can access
broadband with speeds of over 30Mbps. However, we want our residents and businesses to be able to access the next generation of technology as soon as possible. “This announcement by Openreach will soon help our businesses to be more productive and more competitive and it will mean our homes can access the connectivity they need for modern living – such as home working, video streaming and computer gaming. “Sheffield has an ambition that no one is excluded from the digital age and the socio-economic
benefits of being online. Openreach will install full fibre broadband across the city, including councilowned social housing, meaning that everyone will have the chance to benefit from the best networks available.” Openreach recently raised its target for full fibre connections from three to four million premises by March 2021, with an ambition to reach 15 million homes and businesses by the mid-2020s if the right investment conditions are in place. The new locations have been published on
Openreach’s website alongside a raft of information about its ‘Fibre First’ build programme. This short video explains what full fibre technology is. People interested in upgrading their broadband can see what’s available in their area by entering their postcode into Openreach’s online fibre checker. Openreach has committed to publishing information on its website detailing its build plans for the next 12 months – including the total number of exchange areas to be reached in each location over the next 24 months.

KEEPMOAT COMMUNITY CLEAN UP A SUCCESS Dozens of fans of Doncaster Rovers and students from Club Doncaster Foundation got together to support a clampdown on troublesome littering with the help of Doncaster Council. Supplied by the local authority with the requisite equipment such as gloves, litter pickers and bin bags, dozens of willing volunteers donated their valued time
and effort to collect several bags of waste. Included in the group were youngsters taking part in the National Citizen Service (NCS) programme, delivered by Club Doncaster Foundation, to help spruce up the surrounding areas of the club’s Keepmoat Stadium home ahead of the start of the 2019/20 football season. Councillor Chris
McGuinness, Cabinet Member for Communities, Voluntary Sector and the Environment, said: “When we heard that supporters of Doncaster Rovers and members of the NCS scheme were undertaking a litter pick, we were only too happy to oblige by providing the equipment and then collect the waste once done. The stadium sees a lot of footfall
right throughout the week and we’re glad to be able to work together – with volunteers young and old – to help rid our community of unsightly rubbish.” Volunteers were rewarded for their efforts with refreshments and free match tickets to a Rovers game as thanks. HOUSING TEAM LEADS ON HOME ADAPTATIONS Yorkshire Housing’s role in managing the area.
Home Improvement Agency (HIA) in Sheffield is at the forefront of home adaptations that help customers maintain their independence. The housing association allocates £460,000 a year to provide for tenants in need of minor and major adaptations to their homes – ranging from items such as grab rails to level access showers. The internal adaptations team coordinates the works, from the referral coming in, to the works being carried out and sign off in many cases. For minor adaptations, handypersons from the Sheffield-based South HIA and its North area counterpart carry out the works. For major adaptations, the internal adaptations technical officer will visit, draw up the plans and produce a schedule of works for contractors to complete. It could be for an elderly customer, someone who is disabled or if someone needs extra support due to ill health. This is just one area in which Yorkshire Housing meets its social responsibilities as a landlord – and the HIA in Sheffield manage the service. They also support major adaptations in the Swarcliffe Estate in Leeds as part of Yorkshire Housing’s
South HIA and Internal Adaptations manager Layla Walton (pictured) said: “We’re committed to helping people live independently and comfortably in their own homes and in a way that keeps their dignity.” The internal adaptations team also have close-knit relationships with local authorities and occupational therapists across Yorkshire, working with them to deliver disabled facilities grants for major adaptations in tenants’ properties. There is also a two-pronged private handytec service that brings money into the business for vulnerable people who are not Yorkshire Housing tenants. This covers Barnsley, Sheffield and Rotherham and is for anybody who may not qualify for core council-funded services. “It’s for anybody who is classed as vulnerable and isn’t a tenant,” Layla said. “Grant funding can come from charities or even other businesses that have a fund for community projects.” Layla and her team are constantly searching for grants to add extra added value to the core services. An example of this is the £5,000 won recently from the South Yorkshire Police and Crime Commissioner. There was also a £25,000 grant to deliver smart meter information
NEW LIGHTING CONSULTATIONS Residents of Sheffield will soon have the chance to share their views on a proposal to vary the street lighting levels across the city. Changes in programming, together with the improved functionality of the LED street lighting system, has provided the council with an opportunity to tailor the lighting levels during less busy periods. If approved, as part of the recently launched Climate Emergency plans, which encourages approaches in support of a lower carbon economy, greater resilience to climate change and cleaner growth, the proposals will be adopted city-wide and result in a 380 tonne reduction in Co2 emissions. The change will also support the first priority of the 2018 Green City Strategy. Importantly, the lighting levels will remain in line with the current British Standard Specification whilst providing adequate levels of lighting on the highway. If implemented, the changes will enable the council to reduce light pollution and its negative effects on residents’ sleep patterns, certain nocturnal animals, plant species and people’s enjoyment of the night sky. The dimming will be trialled in three areas of the city from Monday 19 August to Friday 13 September and will see lighting levels being reduced by up to an additional 14%. The areas selected for the pilot are Crosspool, Endcliffe and Meersbrook. Households in the chosen areas will each receive a letter inviting them to attend an information session in their local library. Residents across the city will also be invited to take part in an online consultation on the proposals. The views of those in the pilot areas will then be assessed alongside the views from respondents across the city. Cabinet member for environment and street scene at Sheffield City Council, Councillor Lewis Dagnall said: “We
know that lighting levels will be of interest to most people in the city and, for that reason, we are inviting people to have their say on our proposals. As a council, we are committed to achieving the objectives set out in our Green City Strategy and take the necessary steps to becoming a zero-carbon city by 2050, in the midst of this current climate emergency. We fully recognise that the transition to a low carbon economy is not going to be easy, and there will be difficult decisions to make along the way, but, ultimately it’s about doing the right thing for people across our city and enhancing and protecting Sheffield’s environment for everyone to enjoy now and in the future. Thanks to the Streets Ahead investment, we are proud to have one of the best street lighting networks in the country, and our intention was always to take advantage of its ability to adjust lighting levels responsively to react to the changing levels of traffic and footfall. These proposals put us in a somewhat fortunate position where we can adjust our pioneering lighting system and still achieve good lighting levels, whilst maintaining safe highway conditions and above all, making valuable reductions in carbon, energy and cost.” The proposals will see street lights switch on responsively at 80% instead of the current 84% before midnight and reduce from 54% to 40% at midnight until 5am, whilst still meeting the requirements of the current national Code of Practice. South Yorkshire Police are aware of the proposal and the council will continue to work with them, and other stakeholders, to assess and evaluate impact on communities. Emergency services will still be able to request an increase in lighting levels, in response to certain incidents, when required. Sheffield has one of the most advanced street lighting systems in the UK, with

The HIA’s overall mission is to help ensure the most marginalised people in society can remain independent, secure and have a safe place fit to call home. And to make sure people do not miss out on other available Yorkshire Housing services, the Sheffield HIA and the separate Help at Hand service, which is run by the Independent Living Service (ILS), cross-promote each other. Layla added: “It’s great to work with the ILS on their Help at Hand Service. I believe both Help at Hand and the home improvement agencies work within the same ethos, allowing us to offer a wider variety of services to the people who need it most.” Yorkshire Housing is one of Yorkshire’s largest social housing providers managing 18,000 affordable and social rent homes, with plans to build 3,120 more by 2021. the ability to vary lighting levels – even down to individual lighting columns. As a result of the Streets Ahead investment, Sheffield now has a complete network of state-of-the-art white LED street lights. In the first five years of the programme, more than 66,000 new LED street lights were installed across the city; ensuring safer and more energy efficient light distribution. The city-wide consultation will open in coming weeks and, once live, will be available on the council’s website at: https://sheffield.citizenspace.com/

Wedding Guide WHAT STAR SIGN ARE YOU AND HOW WELL DO THESE PREDICTIONS MATCH YOUR PLANNING STYLES?
LIBRA – You’re the ultimate romantic so an artsy affair is right up your alley. Rent a gallery space or a location full of history. Hire a string quartet and read poetry before your vows, and practice the first dance with your lover. Hire a videographer to relive the magic. ARIES – This is YOUR day to be queen! All eyes are on you, so go bold with hair and makeup and hire the very best photographer. Make it a royal affair with a long train, lavish ceremony and plenty of sweet smelling flowers! TAURUS – Stick to tradition
if you’re a Taurus. Weddings are about uniting families as far as your sign is concerned. The ceremony will probably take place in a giant park or an elegant winery. SAGITTARIUS – You’d like a destination wedding, and your commitment-shy sign is a nature lover at heart, so perhaps the woods for a rustic celebration. You’ll inject a lot of humour with a bawdy toast/ roast, line dancing, and of course, a photobooth. SCORPIO – Your deeply private sign doesn’t love the idea of being vulnerable in front of a huge crowd. You’ll probably elope then have the show wedding a month later. A plunging dress is for you, but take it easy with the champagne! GEMINI – You’re committing. For life. This can be a scary time for a Gemini, but you cannot wait for the party! Hiring the DJ is an important part of the planning process for you, and you’re very excited to celebrate the
day and paint the town red with your friends.
CANCER – You’d prefer an intimate ceremony, as you hate emoting in public. You’re likely to get married abroad with just a couple of witnesses or in a quiet location to avoid onlookers or guests. Enjoy a catered affair in your own backyard with chic, DIY décor or a candlelit spring garden. LEO – Number one on your list is entertainment. You want the aisle to be your runway and the reception to star a live band, magician, fire spinner, the works! Your main aim is to put on a performance. VIRGO – You’ll have the Pinterest-perfect wedding. After your simple ceremony under the bright blue summer sky, invite guests to a rustic barn with a nature-driven theme. There will be fairy lights everywhere and flowers in mason jars. Photograph everything with Polaroid cameras for the perfect Instagram pics! CAPRICORN – You’ll
appreciate high end elegance. It’s wifey for life with your dedicated sign, so expect a hand-selected pinot, high class menu, and a wedding in a mansion or country club with acres of property. Family is everything to you, just don’t let them dictate everything.
AQUARIUS – You’re not anti-love, but weddings seem like a farce to you. The humanitarian in you requests rock ‘n’ roll musicians to be invited, writers to read works of love, and a pot-luck style meal. Pick a suggested charity for donation. PISCES – There won’t be a dry eye in the house at your ceremony. You’ll be sobbing along the aisle so opt for waterproof mascara. You love a theme and enjoy planning your wedding elements to ‘Under the Sea,’ or ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream.’ If guests show up in costume, it will please you more than the wedding itself.

U.S. COUNTRY STAR TO PLAY IN DRONFIELD New York’s Jessica Lynn continues to make her mark on country music with release of her 3rd Nationwide American TV Special & UK Tour calling in at Dronfield Civic Hall on Tuesday 13th August. Currently seen nationwide across America in her two full length concert television specials, “Jessica Lynn – This Much Fun” and “Jessica Lynn – Takin’ Over – Live at The Paramount” this New York country girl is headed overseas this July and August for the 4th time for a seven-week-long international tour in support of her brand new “acoustic” television special that will begin airing this summer. Jessica has had an incredible past two years with her last single “Let’s Don’t” breaking the Top 40 on the American Country Music Chart, and her previous single “Crazy Idea” breaking the Top 50. Both singles received significant radio and press support by worldwide media. “I am so excited to be releasing a brand new concert special with so much new music this year. I wanted to strip everything down and show everyone who I was, not just as a performer, but as a songwriter and a person. I carefully chose each song based on the significance of their stories and every piece of this show truly gives the audience a special look in to my life and my inner-most thoughts and feelings. I am so proud of this concert and everything that it represents and can’t wait for everyone to see it” – Jessica Lynn With five years of heavy touring under her belt, she has performed with country and rock music elite such as Brad Paisley, Keith Urban, Loretta Lynn,
ZZ Top, Kelsea Ballerini, and Phil Vassar, amongst many others. After an “unprecedented audience response” from The UK’s massive festival “Ramblin’ Man Fair” in Kent, Jessica was invited to perform at one of the most popular country music festivals in the UK this May, “Buckle & Boots”. This August, she will return to the UK for several dates with some of the best opening acts on the UK country scene while her new television special will air on The UK’s Keep It Country TV. Her energetic live show and fresh sound make her a true standout within her genre, often drawing comparisons to country superstar Shania Twain. This upcoming tour will be jam-packed with brand new music, both intimate and powerful elements, and will present music fans around the world with a unique and unconventional crossover approach to modern country music via a truly dynamic performer and entertainer. ANGLER’S CORNER
with Clint Walker
I’ve done something this week that I don’t think I’ve done before; caught on a bare hook! I turned up bright and early after noticing a break forecast in the recent hot weather, expecting to enjoy a cooler day and hoping that the fish would ‘switch on’. The venue I opted for has a history of being very tricky after atmospheric changes, with either a red letter day or blank on the cards; I hoped for the former as I set up in a roomy peg… As always, I tossed in a few of my favourite Spotted Fin Catalyst pellets, choosing a mixture of sizes to get fish rooting in the swim and hopefully confound them when it came to identifying the hook bait. I was astonished to see fish barrel in immediately, responding to the sound of the pellets hitting the water and quickly tackled up a pellet waggler

whilst also feeding the margins in front of the peg. The pellet waggler is not a method I enjoy; I go fishing to relax, not spend every second constantly firing out freebies or casting a float, but I fancied a change so selected a small loaded float and slipped it between rubber stops. A size 12 hook with 8mm wafter banded on was set to slowly sink through the first couple of feet of water as I continued to ping out pellets. After casting and drawing the float back towards the baited area, I missed the first bite, mesmerised as fish boiled on the surface, but hit the second which resulted in a bream of around 3lb. My next bite saw a similar fish banked and I quickly realised that the majority of fish splashing about were bream, not my intended target, but as I glanced into the margins, I noted carp with their tails up; time to change tactics. A crystal waggler replaced the bigger float and after plumbing up I shotted the float before swinging it in to see if it cocked correctly. The float started to settle before sliding away and I thought I’d put too much weight on. I wound down to retrieve it but was amazed to find solid resistance at the other end and wondered if I’d foul hooked one of the carp as it charged off! A few minutes of tense scrapping saw the carp over the threshold, and I was surprised to see that it had indeed been hooked fair and square in the mouth, having obviously decided that the small latex pellet band warranted further investigation. It wasn’t a bad fish either, at around 10lb, but of course I couldn’t count that amongst the eventual total could I?

TO ADVERTISE YOUR FISHING VENUE FOR THE SUMMER SEASON PLEASE CALL OUR SALES TEAM ON 0114 276 3633 OPTION 1 Over the next hour, I added four more double figure carp to my tally, a mixture of commons and scaly mirrors to well over 16lb. I’d been feeding pellets religiously, a pinch every minute or so, and by now the swim was packed with carp; had I fallen in, I would’ve remained dry! I was in danger of foul hooking fish, so opted to change tactics once more, sliding on a lead and adding a four inch hook link. I was still using the same Spotted Fin 8mm wafters, although the much darker bloodworm variety was picking up more bites as the score continued to rise. Four hours into the session and I could feel a bruise rising on my inner thigh where the rod butt was held during the ongoing battles, but I kept feeding and kept catching… Either side of me, other anglers picked off odd fish which strayed out of my swim, but it was an uneven contest. Every time they caught a carp, I caught three or four and by the end of the session, a mere eight hours, I’d landed over thirty double figure carp and a brace of bream for a total weight estimated at over 375lb! I could do no wrong, whatever I did caught fish and it was an astonishing session which

I’m not likely to repeat soon and all I’d used was approximately three kilos of feed pellets and half a pot of hookbaits. I eventually left because I’d had enough; it was back breaking work on a warm day and although it was fun, the novelty soon wore off as carp after carp crawled up the bank; after the first two bream, everything else was a carp! Every single carp had been caught less than a rod length from the bank too, and during a day when I’d noticed other anglers casting as far as they could to find fish, I’d stacked them up under my feet by constant feeding of quality bait and kept them interested all day as they rooted through the mix of pellets. It just goes to show that a change of a few degrees, a bit of cloud cover and a bit of thoughtful bait application can result in a bumper day, so if you are sitting at home thinking about fishing, get out there and do it whilst the conditions are so good; you won’t catch sitting at home!

FREDDIE LADAPO ON DEBUT MORE TO COME FROM GOAL AND MILLERS WIN VICTORIOUS MILLERS As far as debuts go, Freddie Ladapo enjoyed a fruitful one on Saturday afternoon as he scored his first goal in Rotherham United colours to help his teammates secure a 2-1 win away at AFC Wimbledon. Having signed from Plymouth Argyle for a club-record fee during the summer, the 26year-old was eager to get off to a flying start, so to find the net and claim all three points on the opening day of the season would’ve definitely pleased him. However, being the harshest of critics when analysing his own performance, he believes he perhaps should’ve added a few more strikes to his tally. Despite that, the striker hailed the overall display of the team in what was a hardfought encounter. He said: “You start as you mean to go on and the most important thing for us was to get those three points. For
me, as a striker coming into a new group, it’s always good to open your account on the first day so I’m very pleased with that. “I’m always hard on myself, but it’s the first game and I still think I’m a little rusty, as are the rest of the team. I should’ve buried a couple more of my chances and we should’ve performed better in the second half, but we’re finding our feet - it’s just great that we won. “The first game of the season is always difficult regardless of how good your team is or where you’re expected to finish, but it was just about implementing what we’d been working on in training and counteracting their threats to get the result.” The Millers supporters travelled down to the Cherry Red Records Stadium and the sellout away contingent of almost 800 made themselves heard from
the terraces, and the former Crystal Palace man was appreciative of the reception he received. In what proved to be a tight affair, particularly in the second half when the hosts rallied following Joe Pigott’s equaliser, the Rotherham faithful continued to get behind Paul Warne’s men and Ladapo was
quick to praise their impact. On the fans, he added: “They were fantastic. I didn’t know what to expect coming here, but they were great and they sang my name from the warm-up all the way to the final whistle. “It was great to hear the volume they created and to see them turn out in their numbers.”
MOORE PLEASED WITH SECOND HALF SHOWING Darren Moore felt Rovers finished the strongest against Gillingham on Saturday, and his side looked the most likely winners after an impressive second half display. A Kieran Sadlier goal on the brink of half-time meant Rovers were to share the spoils with Gillingham, who had taken the lead through Alex Jakubiak. Moore said: “It was a difficult and typical first game of the season where it was a bit frantic at times with lots of
energy being displayed by both teams. I’m just pleased that we’ve come through a real stern test. “It is not easy because Gillingham are a good and strong team who are blessed with lots of athleticism, speed and power but I thought the players stood up to the test and if we could deal with that then we would cause them some problems. Towards the end we were definitely the stronger team. “The physical condition of the players was very good, they have come off and are a bit
disappointed that they couldn’t find that winner. But if you can’t win a game the best thing to do is not to lose it and we definitely finished the stronger team.” After three weeks in the hot seat, Moore believes he is learning more about the players and believes there is still more to come from his team. He added: “I have learnt that my players are intelligent and are a good footballing team, they have a good understanding with each other. They know each other’s strengths
and weaknesses and are committed to what we are trying to do. “We are only three weeks in since I joined the club so in terms of the work that has gone on I have to be pleased with that. We get another full week to work now and get back to the training pitch. “This almost a new team so we need patience. That brings different advantages and disadvantages but we are a work in progress and we have made big strides in a short space of time.”
BOSS Paul Warne believed that his Millers side were “unplayable” at times during their late opening day victory over AFC Wimbledon, but warned their League One rivals that there is a lot more to come from his team. The Millers made the long trip from the capital with the three points thanks to Clark Robertson’s well-taken late strike after Joe Pigott had cancelled out Freddie Ladapo’s first-half goal, on his competitive debut for the club. Speaking to the assembled media afterwards, Warne remarked that he felt his side were good value for the win at the Cherry Red Records Stadium, in front of a sell-out travelling contingent from South Yorkshire. “I was pretty pleased.” Warne enthused. “I thought we were
unplayable at times in the first half. I think we should have gone in with a bigger lead. “Wimbledon caused us all sorts of problems at the start of the second half. We did not start very well and it was disappointing conceding from a set-piece. The wave of impetus went towards them but we still had enough chances to win. “We should have gone in at the interval with a comfortable lead. We had a couple of efforts cleared off the line. I’m happy with the win but there is more to come.” With the visitors being pegged back early in the second half, Warne’s side had to withstand spells of pressure from the rejuvenated hosts – but the Millers chief was quick to pay tribute to the character of his side, and the impact of his substitutes, in particular, who helped change the course of the game, back
in Rotherham’s favour. “Any team you play have chances and they did have chances.” Warne admitted. “The fact that the lads bounced back and are pretty happy with themselves to get the win was pleasing. “I’m asking a lot from the lads physically and I’m happy with the bench. I thought the subs had a good positive impact today, Wilesy (Ben Wiles) especially.
“(Jamie Proctor) Procs came on and added a bit of physicality upfront and Carlton (Morris) was a problem for them. “They just give us that bit of energy on a hot day on the opening day of the season when everyone was fatiguing. “All the subs did well. I said this is the hardest 11 I’ve had to pick because any of the 18 could have started today and there would have been no complaints.”
ON-LOAN WOLVES MAN ENNIS SETTLED AT ROVERS
New signing Niall Ennis has said the reception he received from the Rovers faithful during 1-1 draw with Gillingham in Sky Bet League One made him feel immediately welcomed. Ennis, who signed on loan from Wolves alongside Cameron John on Friday, made his Rovers debut in the second half of Saturday’s opening-day fixture. “It’s always good to start the season in front of your own fans, I’ve only just arrived really but I
felt like the fans gave me a great welcome which I’m really pleased to see - now I’m really looking forward to the rest of the season,” he said. “It makes it a little bit easier having Cameron up here with me, but the players and the fans have made me feel welcome already. “They finished sixth here last year and I’m looking for more of the same, or even better would be great, I just want to help the team win games and see where we go.” Ennis is on a season-long
loan from the Premier League side and he cited manager Darren Moore as being a big influence on his decision to switch the West Midlands for South Yorkshire. “I found out that I was wanted here about a week ago, and as soon as I heard Darren Moore was interested it was a no-brainer for me and I just wanted to come here,” he added. “The manager wants to play good football and I think this is the right move for me, hopefully it’ll be a great
club for me to show off my abilities and show everyone just what I can do here, I want to come here and score goals and bring a winning mentality. “The gaffer has said he sees a lot of potential in me and this is the place to help me show it, hopefully this move can work for the both of us, I like to work hard, get the ball and try and run in behind, and I like to get the fans off their feet and hopefully I can do that here.”

FULL PRAISE FROM BULLEN Three goals and three points away from home on the opening day of the season was an ideal start for Lee Bullen and Sheffield Wednesday. The opening game of the new campaign offered plenty for those of a Wednesday persuasion to be excited by for the season ahead. Spirits were riding high in the aftermath
of the Owls’ 3-1 win at Reading with Bullen, the squad and supporters enjoying the opening day celebrations. Buoyed by the early signs, Bullen said: “I have no complaints about anyone from Saturday, I would have liked us to play better as a team, absolutely. “We will play better as a team but the first game of any season
is an anomaly and you never quite know what you are going to get. “But to get through it in the manner we did, I don’t think we can have any complaints. “We now face a big, big game against a Barnsley side who had a fantastic result against Fulham so it will be a good derby next week!”
TOGETHERNESS AND HUNGER After beginning the season with a bang at Reading on the first day, Sam Hutchinson says the togetherness and hunger of the squad is there for all to see. The midfield man, who chipped in with a crucial goal at The Madejski on his 30th

ONE-MATCH BAN FOR WESTWOOD Keiren Westwood will serve a one-match suspension following his dismissal on the opening day of the season at Reading. The Irishman was sent off with ten minutes left to play at the Madejski Stadium for his challenge on Mo Barrow outside the area. Westwood will be sidelined for the Owls’ clash with Barnsley on Saturday at Hillsborough.

“Everyone has put in the work, we’ve had a proper good preseason and I think you can see that. “We obviously want to play football because we’ve got the players to do it, we’ve got Baz, Kieran
Lee, we’ve got Kads – you saw what an impact he can make, Lucas coming on was fantastic so we’ve got the players to play but sometimes you have to grind results out. “Hopefully it can be a good year for us.”
BULLEN BOOSTS CHANCES OF TAKING TOP JOB FAN COLUMN BY CHRIS PLATTS
Sheffield Wednesday won 3-1 on the opening day of the season to boost Lee Bullen’s chances of taking the manager’s job on a permanent basis. The Owls lined up with 3 summer signings in the starting line-up, with Kadeem Harris taking all the plaudits following an impressive performance and first goal for the club. Other new signings Julian Borner and Moses Odubajo also impressed in a solid team performance. Reading were not without effort and thought they should have had a penalty as it looked like Tom Lees had handled on the line. They did eventually equalise through a well-placed shot from Yokou Meite. Wednesday soon bounced back with a rare Sam Hutchinson goal from a Barry Bannan corner, just moments after Steven Fletcher had tested the Reading keeper. The Owls were reduced to 10 men as Westwood rushed out to challenge the oncoming Modou
Barrow, but mistimed his tackle and brought down the Reading winger. Cameron Dawson came on and got straight into the game saving a low shot from Charlie Adam. The Owls came under intense pressure for the remainder of the game, Lucas Joao doing his best to relieve the pressure with good hold up work when the ball was cleared to him. With his hard work after coming on, it was only right that Joao would put the game to bed, finishing in the bottom corner after a great first touch to take him past the defender. Throughout the game Wednesday looked comfortable on the ball and always looked to help each other out, in and out of possession. With the togetherness of the team in full show for all to see, it seems that Bullen has united the squad in what has been a turbulent preseason period. With the transfer window closing this week, it will be interesting to see who comes and who goes in both players and backroom staff.

Record smashed again as McBurnie arrives The Blades have significantly smashed the club’s transfer record to ensure that August 2019 will be regarded as a momentous month in the history of Sheffield United Football Club. It can now be reported that United’s tenacious bid to secure the services of striker Oli McBurnie has been successful. The formalities of the four-year deal for the Yorkshireman have been concluded after an undisclosed fee with Swansea City was agreed. It is the fourth time United has broken the club’s transfer record this summer and comes at the start of a month that sees Chris Wilder’s side begin an exciting campaign in the Premier League. McBurnie, a 23-
year-old Scottish international, has been a long-time target and boss Wilder is thrilled with his new arrival. He said: “We’ve had to be patient and work very hard to get Oli to Bramall Lane but I am confident he will be a tremendous success. “We need options at the top of the pitch and Oli, as anyone who has watched a significant amount of Championship football will tell you, offers plenty in that area. He fits the profile of our transfer policy this season and is an age where his better years are ahead of him - hopefully he and the club can continue to grow together. “I’m delighted with the transfer business over the summer, Oli is a big piece of the jigsaw, and the squad
is shaping up ready for what will be a long and demanding season.” The United chief added: “Over the years, we’ve had the stigma of a selling club and, of course, there will be sales in the future, but it should be noted that we are a buying club, we’ve spent a significant amount and the owners deserve a huge amount of credit for the way they have sanctioned our assault on the transfer market.” Signing number eight, McBurnie, started his career at Bradford City, making his debut for the Bantams as a 17-year-old as a substitute in the FA Cup, before joining Swansea City for an undisclosed fee in July 2015. In January 2018,
he joined Barnsley on-loan until the end of season and scored nine times, including one against the Blades, in 16 starts, despite the Tykes being relegated. Last term, the 6ft 2ins frontman caught the eye in south Wales, netting 24 times in
Hendo’s back
Manchester United. As can be seen in the video above, Henderson is delighted to return after his exploits last season and boss Wilder is equally thrilled. “Dean was always our number one target,” said Wilder. “We’ve had to fight to get a good deal and that’s part and parcel of our approach in the transfer market. All of us, from myself, to the coaching staff, to the player and the supporters want him
playing for us in the Premier League and with a lot of hard work we’ve made that happen.” Prior to joining the Blades for the entirety of the 2018/19 season, Henderson had furthered his footballing development with successful loan spells at Shrewsbury Town and Grimsby Town. Henderson was an ever-present between the sticks in United’s promotion-winning campaign last season, making a number of
crucial saves at key times. The 22-year-old kept a total of 21 clean sheets last term, which saw him win the Sky Bet Championship Golden Glove award. The fans’ favourite firmly established himself as number one for England’s U21s and started all three group games for Aidy Boothroyd’s Young Lions in the European Championships earlier this summer.
