DRIVE IN MOVIE PROMISES TO BE THE GREATEST SHOW
Hallam FM’s Cash for Kids charity has announced the date and the film for the Drive-in Movie to be held at Motorpoint, the car supermarket, based at Europa Link in Sheffield. Box Office smash hit The Greatest Showman, will be the feature film at this year’s event, which takes place on Saturday 21st September with gates open from 6pm.
The movie is the third event by the nearly new used car dealership in partnership with the local children’s charity. The previous two films sold out within days and helped raise over £8,000 to help local sick and disadvantaged children. Lots of activity on the night will help celebrate the movie theme and this year also provides a limited amount of people to access a VIP
ticket where movie fans can watch from the front row with food in a convertible vehicle provided by Motorpoint.

TALENTED MUSICIANS BRING ASKERN TO LIFE IN NEW MUSIC GROUP
Residents in Askern, Doncaster, have an exciting opportunity to work with professional musicians and compose original songs about the town at a new music group. This fun and supportive group, called Creative Directions in Askern, is led by darts (Doncaster Community Arts) and features talented musicians including Gary Hammond, an incredible percussionist who tours internationally with instrumental duo The Hut
People; Janet Wood, an expert singer/songwriter with 40 years’ experience in community music making; and Luke Carver Goss, who featured on the award-winning BBC Radio 3 programme, Late Junction. These incredible musicians encourage participants to write their own music using Askern’s unique history and landmarks as inspiration, such as the town’s iconic boating lake and its place as a renowned spa town. Assistant Director,
Lucy Robertshaw said: “We’re thrilled to have such a talented team of musicians writing songs with participants about Askern. We’ve been hard at work planning the sessions and participants have come up with lots of exciting ideas – from new songs about local heroes to music about Askern’s rich heritage.” No experience whatsover is needed – just come along and have a go! Friends, family members and other community members are also
welcome to get involved and try something new. Sessions are free to attend and there is no need to book on, although we encourage you to come regularly to get the most out of the sessions. darts has designed the programme with Doncaster Public Health, and the two will continue to work together to evidence the positive impacts that participation in the arts can have on health and wellbeing. Creative Directions in Askern is funded by
Spirit of 2012’s Music Challenge Fund, which also funded the Creative Directions project in Edlington. Spirit of 2012 is the London 2012 legacy fund. Spirit awards grants for inclusive arts, sports and volunteering activities in communities that bring people together to improve their wellbeing. The National Lottery Community Fund founded Spirit in 2013 with a £47million endowment to continue and recreate the spirit of pride, positivity and community that inspired people across the UK during the London 2012 Games.

In the News
I went into a pet shop and asked for twelve bees. The shopkeeper counted out thirteen and handed them over. “You’ve given me one too many.” “That one is a freebie.” What do you call a potato wearing glasses? A spectater. Interviewer: “Where do you see yourself in 5 years?” Me: “Listening. Yes I’d say listening is my biggest weakness.” “Waitress, can I ask you something about the menu please?” Waitress (slaps me round the face): “That’s none of your business!” As I put my car in reverse, I thought to myself... “This takes me back.” I’m deathly afraid of elevators. I take a lot of steps to avoid them.

Audiences will find themselves dancing out of their seats as a collection of Disney melodies like “Hakuna Matata,” “You’ve Got a Friend in Me” and “Let It Go” fills the arena.” Fans can rock out to “Turtle Rock” with Nemo, Dory, Squirt and his rambunctious turtle friends, and fall in love with a musical montage of dazzling prince and princess pairs skating to “At Last I See the Light,” “A Whole New World” and more. “This is a show, more than any other, which is truly for everybody,” said Producer Kenneth Feld. “When I sit with the audience, I see those that are grandparents, like I am, enjoying a lot of the classic Disney stories, while young kids and parents really respond to modern day favourites like Frozen.”

COULD DEF LEPPARD’S EARLIEST CHAMPIONS GIVE RISE TO TYLER’S SUCCESS? The story of Sheffield’s Def Leppard could never be complete without a nod to the two local rock DJs that helped introduce the band’s first self-financed EP to the world. It was as early as 1978 that the Bailey Brothers – two ex-miners that went on to front MTV’s first rock show and were pivotel to the UK’s
NWOBHM (New Wave of British Heavy Metal) movement – first caught the band live and made it their mission to promote the Def Leppard sound to the world via their influential DJ shows at places like London’s legendary Marquee Club, Brixton Academy, Birmingham Odeon and Retford Porterhouse following the band’s release of their

debut Def Leppard E.P. on their own Bludgeon Riffola label in January 1979. “They were fellow Sheffielders and we enjoyed a great friendship with all the band”, said Dez Bailey. “I remember shooting a few frames of pool with bassist Rick Savage at the South Sea pub in Sheffield – one of the band’s regular watering holes. Straight after he gave me a world exclusive listen to the now legendary ‘Hysteria’ in his car! He went on to give us the world exclusive track listing and we published it in Metal Hammer the following week!” Now history looks set to be repeated as Rick Bailey
– Dez Bailey’s son and owner of Sheffield’s only American Sports and Dive bar – handpicked the Crossfire Eagles, aspiring guitar rockers containing none other than Def Leppard bass player Rick Savage’s son Tyler, to play at his bar’s first birthday party a few days ago. Rick Bailey said: “They were that good we’re hoping to give them a residency – I can see them following in Def Leppard’s footsteps. Their songwriting is amazing.” The Bailey Brothers went on to have major international success via their 1980s MTV show; they were regulars on the
bill at Donnington Park’s Monsters of Rock Festival and became renowned rock journalists. And their influence is still felt today. Dez Bailey said: “Tyler Savage admitted the only time he’d ever been nervous was when he found out the Bailey Brothers were present at their FirePit Rocks birthday party gig. They needn’t have worried – they were awesome!” FirePit Rocks is situated at 138 West Street, Sheffield S1 4ES. More information: www. firepit.rocks

ISSUE 1331 14/08/2019
YORKSHIRE HOUSING KEEPING VIOLENCE VICTIMS SAFE Staff at Yorkshire Housing’s Home Improvement Agency (HIA) in Sheffield are working to keep victims of domestic violence safe. They began a partnership fitting security measures at the homes of sufferers from August 1 after being part of a successful bid for approximately £30,000 in funding. The grant is split equally between Yorkshire Housing’s South and North HIAs and covers Sheffield, Barnsley and North Yorkshire. It follows a funding bid made by the HIAs and the Independent Domestic Abuse Service (IDAS) charity. The South HIA team has significant experience in assisting with contracts of a sensitive nature due to working with IDAS and Rotherham Metropolitan Borough Council to deliver the domestic violence service in Rotherham since 2011. York-based IDAS, which started as York Women’s Aid in 1977 and whose patrons include Chocolat author Joanne Harris, will collect the referrals. Yorkshire Housing’s handypersons and needs, advice and support officers will attend people’s homes to fit security measures and give safety tips. Due to the sensitivity of the contract, HIA staff attend domestic abuse training annually to ensure they are fully equipped to deal with any circumstances that may
arise during the visits. Security measures include the fitting of window and door handle alarms and new locks. Layla Walton the South HIA and Internal Adaptations manager who is coordinating the scheme in the south, said help is available for both women and men. She added: “This scheme is for the protection of anyone who is at risk. Perpetrators are often perceived to be male, but this is not the case. We are here to assist and provide safety measures for all victims that access the IDAS service regardless of gender.” The work fits into the HIAs’ overall mission – which is to help ensure everyone can remain independent, secure and have a safe place fit to call home. It is one of many schemes, including internal home adaptations, gas safety checks and promoting smart meter use among the over-65s, that Yorkshire Housing’s HIAs are involved in. Layla added: “We’re committed to helping people live independently and comfortably in their own homes and in a way that keeps their dignity.” The most recent Crime Survey for England and Wales estimated that 1.3 million women and 695,000 men experienced domestic abuse in 2018/19. IDAS is the largest specialist charity
in Yorkshire supporting those affected by domestic abuse or sexual violence. More than 90 per cent of IDAS adult support workers are Safe Lives accredited domestic abuse or sexual violence advisors. The charity’s services include refuge accommodation, including in the Craven and Hambleton areas, plus support for children and a free confidential out of hours helpline. The circumstances of customers will be carefully monitored to ensure staff are not put at risk when visiting. Layla said: “There could always be a risk. For example, the perpetrator could be anywhere around the property. We will therefore monitor situations by speaking with the customer and the referral agency to ensure nobody is put in danger.” Yorkshire Housing is one of Yorkshire’s largest social housing providers managing 18,000 affordable and social rent homes, with plans to build 3,120 more by 2021. It also provides a range of services to help people live independently in their own homes across the region. For more information visit: www.yorkshirehousing.co.uk.
not when you ‘think’ it’s the right – or ‘normal’ time to get to bed. 2. The bed is only for sleep Many people find they’re sleepy on the couch before bed, but once they get into bed their brains wake up and sleep won’t come. This is because the more that people have insomnia, the more they spend time in bed awake, trying to force sleep to happen. The more you pair the bed with awake activities, the more your body thinks the bed isn’t just for sleep but is also for wake. If you only use the bed for sleep and sex, your body begins to relearn that those are the activities allowed in bed. To do this, get in bed when you’re sleepy. Don’t look at the clock – it only serves to worsen your sleep. If you feel your brain is too active you begin to get frustrated, or you approximate that 20 minutes have passed (don’t be exact here as that leads to clock-watching), get up and sit in a different room. Do something quiet, calm and relaxing in dim light (eg. reading a book – avoid screens as that can wake you up more). Return to bed only when you’re sleepy. If you get in bed and can’t fall back to sleep, get up again after approximately 20 minutes and repeat. You might have to do this a bunch of times at night for a few weeks – but eventually, your body will hopefully learn that the bed is only for sleep and sex. Remember, getting out of bed isn’t meant to make you sleepy. Don’t expect reading to automatically be a sedative. It’s solely meant to be a placeholder so you aren’t in bed tossing and turning. 3. If you’re hesitant to get up because you think you’re about to fall asleep… Give yourself the ‘one chance’ rule of 10 minutes. If you haven’t fallen asleep within 10 minutes, you fooled yourself. Go back and follow instruction number 2. 4. The clock is – and isn’t – your friend Keep a consistent bed and wake time as much as possible, as this helps keep your

DEALING WITH INSOMNIA Not being able to sleep can be a waking nightmare – and it’s a problem that commonly blights the lives of many more women than men. Research suggests that from adolescence to their early-50s, for every two men with insomnia there are three women, and around 11% of women have chronic, unremitting insomnia. Behavioural sleep expert Dr Shelby Harris is determined to help. The New York-based specialist, who treats a wide range of sleep disorders, says the fact this sleep problem is more common among women is not a coincidence. “Insomnia is not gender-blind. Women, unlike men, are susceptible to significant hormonal fluctuations throughout the lifespan – from preadolescence through menopause,” explains Harris. “When combined with life stressors of work, family and trying to fit everything in at once, it should be no surprise that women struggle with turning off their brains to obtain a solid, quality night of sleep on a regular basis.” She says one of the most effective treatments for insomnia is stimulus control, in which the body and mind are trained that the bed is only for sleep and sex, thus helping to gradually shift the active brain into a quieter state when it gets into bed. Curious to learn more? Here are five stimulus control methods to help you get a consistently good night’s sleep. 1. Go to bed only when sleepy When we begin to have trouble with sleep, we get into bed hoping sleep is an on/off switch. Instead, we typically stay there, tossing and turning (or staying still, watching TV, reading, etc) and wait for sleep to come. This teaches the body that the bed is a place for forcing sleep to happen, even if not sleepy. Instead, if you’re sufficiently sleepy (yawning, can’t keep your eyes open), you’ll fall asleep much faster, night after night. Don’t force it, get into bed when you’re sleepy,

Layla Walton - South HIA Manager body clock set overall. Set the alarm clock for the same time every single morning — seven days a week. Our bodies don’t have a weekday and weekend clock that’s different internally. Also, the clock isn’t your friend in the middle of the night. Once you get in bed, don’t look at it until the alarm goes off in the morning. Don’t calculate how long you’ve been awake for or how long you have until you need to get up in the morning. That makes you more anxious and creates more difficulty with falling asleep. 5. Don’t start your day until the alarm clock’s gone off in the morning If you awaken routinely earlier than the alarm and begin eating, having coffee, turning on the TV or tablet, you’re beginning to teach yourself that the day is now starting earlier than you’d like. Instead, find something quiet, calm and relaxing to do in dim light to pass the time until you hear the alarm clock go off in the other room. At that point, feel free to start your day as you wish!

PUBS ARE THE BEATING HEART OF COMMUNITIES A recent YouGov survey conducted for CAMRA has shown that real ale drinkers are reaping the personal and social wellbeing benefits of pub-going. The survey, commissioned ahead of the campaign group’s Great British Beer Festival, has found that excluding those who don’t know, 56% of regular real ale drinkers who go to pubs have made one friend or more there, compared to 35% of the general pub-going population. Furthermore, 30% of real ale drinkers report making five or more mates from their pub visits,
compared to just 16% of all pub-goers, when excluding those who don’t know. Research conducted in 2016 with Oxford University that shows people who have a local pub are happier, more trusting and better-connected to their local community. Given the pivotal role that pubs play, CAMRA is calling for substantial reforms to better support the industry and keep pubs open and thriving. This includes the introduction of a preferential rate of duty for beer sold in pubs and on-trade outlets, greater support for publicans tied to large pub-
owning companies (PubCos) and a significant reduction in the business rates currently paid by our nation’s pubs. Nik Antona, CAMRA’s National Chairman said: “Pubs play a significant role in communities across the country, providing a space for local people to meet, helping to tackle loneliness, and having a positive impact on the personal wellbeing of pub-goers. It’s vital that the government continues to act to reduce pub closures so that pubs remain at the heart of communities. “In addition, it is imperative that beer-
drinkers continue to support the pubs trade by visiting them. Our Summer of Pub campaign aims to show what pubs have to offer and remind people how important the great British pub is to communities. From special screenings of the Women’s World Cup to comedy evenings, beer tastings or special talks, pubs have pulled out all the stops to celebrate this summer and provide something for everyone.” For more information on the Summer of Pub campaign visit: www.camra.org.uk/ summerofpub/

DONCASTER’S CRAZY K9 DOG SHOW TO FUNDRAISE FOR COLD CAPS USED BY CANCER PATIENTS A charity dog show in Doncaster is helping to swell the charity coffers by raising funds for cold caps in hospital chemo units. The ‘Crazy k9s Charity Fun Dog Show’ is taking place at Harworth Miners Welfare Club on Whitehouse Road in Doncaster on Sunday 18th August. Yorkshire’s talented pooches will be putting their best paw forward at the Show all in a bid to contribute
to the coffers of the designated charity to raise much needed funds for cold cap machines for use by those going through cancer treatment, to help patients keep their hair. There will be 19 fun classes for pooches to enter on the day from waggiest tail to best rescue dog! The money raised at this fabulous charity show will go towards providing four Paxman dual scalp cooling machines priced
at £10,000 each which can help in reducing hair loss for patients during chemotherapy & unfortunately they are not routinely funded by the NHS. The charity show is the latest event organised by 39 year old cancer patient, Sherine Hampshire, who also has secondary breast cancer. She wants every chemotherapy patient to have the choice to use a state of the art ‘cooling cap’ to help them

keep their hair during chemo. This isn’t currently the case as many have to endure too long waiting times until others finish using the caps as they are in short supply. Her new event follows hot on the heels of successfully raising funds with a tea party and 'brave the shave' raising £4,000.00. Come along to the show and support this amazing cause.

sniffing around my baits… The first two hours provided nothing more of interest, but as ‘bite time’ approached, I started to notice fish scattering on the surface, and huge bow waves erupt from the vicinity of the island as cats unleashed furious strikes on unsuspecting prey. If you have any local sports news please send an email to info@mercurynewspaper.co.uk It’s tremendous fun to witness, and alongside the vicious attacks, I spied long submarine the first a necklace of Spotted Fin offerings, shadows flit between patches of sunlit water, Pink Pepper Squid, glugged Smokey Jack and ‘S’ shaped swirls appeared as cats flicked boilies and a large halibut pellet, and on the their tails and long dark ghosts slipped from with Clint Walker other, half a tin of spam held on the hair with a sight… Phew! Pink Pepper Squid boilie. Both were mounted I’ve suffered a blank session this week, but I’d changed my baits too, swapping for fish it was exciting nonetheless! I went to a fishery on the biggest hooks and hefty hook links I had kebabs or other Spotted Fin combinations in and after Spombing a messy mix of smashed in Staffordshire named Cudmore, a venue I an effort to get something they fancied in the sardines, Smokey Jack boilies and pellets all haven’t seen for at least three years, but one water, but to no avail; I couldn’t buy a bite I’d noted a chum doing well on whilst seeking liberally soused in Tuna Liquid, each rig was and if I’m honest, I wasn’t very well prepared. fired out to the baited area. Both lines were catfish, so I decided to have a crack myself. I needed bigger hooks, as the big baits were back leaded to prevent any issues should I I wasn’t keen on the weather forecast, heavy dwarfing my irons, but as it was a last minute showers interluded with light showers, which hook a catfish, which, with fish to around 70lb decision to go, I hadn’t got any with me and after the recent deluge promised a very wet and seemed a good idea, and I sat back to brew up. quickly realised that I probably wasn’t going muddy visit, but as I said last week, you can’t Within a minute, a bleep on my receiver made to set the hook in the event of a proper pick catch them sitting at home, so I set off nice and me glance at my bobbins, and the Spotted early to wait for the gates to open! Fin laden rig appeared to be the source of My plan of attack was to target a small island interest; the bobbin tightened slowly towards feature (advice from my chum had been the rod ring, but then stopped and moved no forthcoming) with two rods, each baited more. I watched the rod tip, but whatever had differently to see which (if any) worked. On disturbed the bait had moved on… My heart rate came back down… I always think that fishing for these mighty predators is the pinnacle of freshwater fishing in the UK; with the promise of a potential monster, tackle needs to be beefed up, and the angler has to be prepared for a furious first run which puts tremendous strain on the tackle. It’s superb fun, and as I sat with my tea, I imagined NEW AND USED FISHING TACKLE all sorts of mottled monsters beneath the water

up. As I considered reeling in, my receiver squawked again, and the bobbin lifted once more. I was on the rod in an instant, sweeping it aloft, but failed to connect with anything at the other end… Once retrieved, I inspected the bait and found a tiny silver bream impaled on the size 4 hook! Full marks for ambition my little friend, but you were not what I wanted! That proved to be the only fish of the day, a measly specimen which was dwarfed by the baits. I wasn’t too disappointed, at least I’d seen the cats hunting, it just means I have a little bit more work to do to see what I can do to right my wrongs and get one on the bank. I need to plan my approach better, but I’m convinced I’ll get one next time… but then aren’t we all? That’s why we keep going back isn’t it?

WARNE ON LINCOLN LOSS WE DIDN’T DO ENOUGH Rotherham United manager Paul Warne assessed his side’s display after a 2-0 defeat at the hands of Lincoln City this afternoon. “We came into this game hoping to win,” said Warne. As a game, it wasn’t a great spectacle and the conditions played a major role in that. But we just didn’t take our chances to score when we were on top and got suckerpunched. “First-half, it was their only attempt on goal and they scored. Then the lads are so keen to do so well for this great club that I think they got overawed with emotion and it affected the way they played. “I didn’t think we played as well second-half as the
first-half. Someone told me we had 17 attempts on goal to their three, but they scored two and we didn’t. Regrettably, it’s disappointing to lose a football match but if we’d have scored a goal when we were on top, the game would have taken a different path.” Despite controlling the majority of the first-half, the Millers went in a goal down at the break after Shaun MacDonald’s own goal. The visitors then doubled their lead shortly after the break, with Harry Anderson heading home from a corner. “The ‘keeper made a great save off Freddie,” he continued. “Robbo had a header that Bostwick headed
off the line. At 2-1, it might have been a different story and given the lads a bit more belief. I don’t blame Lincoln for doing this, but they slowed the game down literally to its death. It frustrated our players a bit and when we did get on the ball we weren’t as cool as I would have liked us on it. “I didn’t think the second-half performance was great and we didn’t make their ‘keeper work hard enough. I wasn’t over the moon with the performance. We didn’t do enough to warrant a draw. “My systems are limited. Prior to this game, I understand the expectations, but we’ve got players on the pitch players that only play together three of four times.
MOORE PROUD OF RESILIENT ROVERS Darren Moore was proud of the never say die attitude his team showed in their 1-1 draw away at Rochdale. Rovers went behind to an Aaron Morley cross which snuck in at Ian Lawlor’s far post, but Rovers refused to roll over and Kieran Sadlier equalised in stoppage time with a towering header off Jon Taylor’s cross. Moore said: “It was a gritty, determined performance and the work we did off the ball was good –when we got on the ball, we could have taken a bit more care and detail with it but I thought it was a fair result and both teams acquitted themselves well in difficult conditions. “It would have been cruel for us to lose the game. I said to the boys I was proud of their spirit, their fight-back, and their endeavour. They’re giving everything
they can, and you can’t complain about that. They’ve shown their willingness to take things on board and they’ve demonstrated a real fighting spirit in the opening two games of the season. “What we’ve got here at this football club is a never say die attitude. Sads has scored a great goal in the 92nd minute of four minutes of added time, it’s a towering header and the draw was no more than we
It was going to take time, whatever system we played. Matt Olosunde’s only played one league game, so it’s not like we’ve got the experience of last year. It’s going to take time to gel, if that means we look at other systems, we will. But, at the moment, I thought it was the best way to get our best players on the pitch. “I asked them to have a look and tell me what they think. I told them what I thought of things. It’s not about systems whether you win a header or not in the box. That’s not tactics, it’s endeavour. “I just thought that, the peripheral part of the game today wasn’t as good as I would have liked.”
Sheaf into the back four and he did really well. Then we had to compose ourselves and get back into the game. Despite Rochdale’s rotation, deserved. We’ve gone I thought our work behind in both games, off the ball was good. You get knockbacks but we’ve found a way and that’s a really in football and it comes down to how special ingredient you react to them. to have at a football “All I can really say club.” about Alex at this time The turning point in is that it doesn’t look the first half of the good. He’s gone to the match came when hospital, but until I Alex Baptise went get more clarification down with an injury off the ball and Moore from the medical team I can’t say much was able to shed a small amount of light more. SHAUN MACDONALD TAKING POSITIVES Despite tasting defeat at home to Lincoln City in Sky Bet League One on Saturday afternoon, Shaun MacDonald insists that there were plenty of positives to take ahead of Tuesday night’s trip to Shrewsbury Town. Paul Warne’s men travel to the Montgomery Waters Meadow looking to progress in this season’s Carabao Cup competition, and with the result against the Imps still fresh in the memory, MacDonald is hoping for a reaction. Having been the unlucky player who inadvertently put the ball into his own net to hand Lincoln the lead on the stroke of half-time at the weekend, the midfielder is determined to put in a solid performance against the Shrews. He said: “I’ve been reflecting on Saturday’s
game all weekend and I’ve lost some sleep over it because I’m my own worst critic in a way, but up until their first goal I thought we were in total control of things. “We looked dangerous every time we went forward and we created some good opportunities, but the own goal which was unfortunately scored by me changed the game. “For whatever reason, their game plan worked better than ours once the opening goal went in and it was a good away performance from them, but hopefully we can learn from it to improve throughout the season because it’s still early days. “You have to take as many positives as you can out of each game, but whilst we still have a lot to do, we are all part of an honest group
that are willing to learn and go from strength to strength.” With the quick turnaround between fixtures, MacDonald is relishing the opportunity to get on the pitch again and get back to winning ways as soon as possible, but he expects a tough test against Sam Ricketts’ Shrewsbury side. He said: “Any game you play, regardless of the opposition, they will have their different strengths and it’s our
job to nullify them. We will be overloaded with information beforehand, so hopefully we take that on board and then use our strengths to cause them problems. “The best thing about playing Saturday and then Tuesday is the fact you are forced to forget about the last game if you’d lost, so we just need to concentrate on the next one now and focus on getting things right.”

AGGRESSION PAYING OFF FOR IN-FORM SADLIER
Kieran Sadlier felt his desire to keep plugging away was a big factor in helping earn his side a point at Rochdale. Sadlier scored a dramatic late header at the Crown Oil Arena to level the score and the man signed from Cork City in January was delighted to take his chance when it came. “I’ve been playing up front which is a new position for me, it’s very different from what I’ve been used to before - I’ve not been on the ball as much and not had as many chances as I would’ve liked, but I’m glad I’ve managed to put away the one that I had,” he said. “I don’t really tend to score too many from corners, I’ve scored a few headers though and I’ve tried to add that into my game a bit more. I’m not bad in the air, I just have to try and be more
aggressive to put myself about. “The key for me is just to never let my head drop, you have to keep on going because if you let your head drop then it just makes it difficult for yourself. I’m pleased to get the goal of course, it’s just a shame it couldn’t be a winner.” Sadlier’s 93rd-minute equaliser ensured Rovers remained unbeaten in Darren Moore’s first two games in charge, with Sadlier scoring
both of Rovers’ goals this season, and the forward feels there is more to build on as the early stages of the season progress. “I think a point was the least we deserved in the end, we worked hard in conditions that weren’t easy at all, it wasn’t pretty, Rochdale made it difficult for us, but at half-time we had a word about what we needed to do and that played into our hands in the end,” he added. “We’d love to win but the main thing is that
we haven’t lost, it’s a great quality to have in any side that they can grind out a point in a tough game such as this, it was good that we didn’t drop our head and got back into the game late on. “This is something for us to build on now, we made sure we didn’t lose and we’re still unbeaten, there’s always going to be ways for us to look to improve, we’ll be looking to work hard and be ready for the next game.”

MASSIVE CREDIT TO THEM ALL The Owls continued their 100% start to the new season with a 2-0 win over Barnsley and Lee Bullen had nothing but praise for the whole squad. Wednesday turned in a commanding performance at Hillsborough and the caretaker manager said his side were good value for the points: “We ‘out-Barnsleyed’ Barnsley if you like with the high pressing game.
The players were given a script and stuck to it to the letter. “I’m delighted for all of them, and by that I mean the whole group. We had a very good transfer window and that means we have a lot of depth and today we had seven or eight boys who didn’t make the squad. “But their reaction has been top class and I think it shows the character and togetherness that we
have in the dressing room. “We’ve given everything today and we deserved to win the game.” From front to back, Bullen was delighted with what he saw as the Owls overcame the newly-promoted Tykes. He added: “I thought we were terrific to a man all the way through the team. Cameron made a fantastic point-blank save right on half time and if that goes in we
have a different game so massive credit to him. “The midfield was comfortable and the wide players were terrific. Kadeem caused them all kinds of problems and Jacob Murphy had a dream start by scoring after a couple of minutes. “Steven Fletcher was fantastic and took his goal really well, so credit to all of them, I honestly couldn’t ask anything more.”
THE ROAR KEEPS YOU GOING Owls full back Moses Odubajo said the roar of Wednesdayites kept the team going in Saturday’s 2-0 victory over Barnsley. The pacey defender experienced his first taste of Hillsborough in Wednesday colours
at the weekend and said the atmosphere drove the team forward. The 26-yearold said: “I’m a big believer of winning the ball back higher up the pitch. “If we win the ball nearer to their goal, it gives us less to run on such a massive pitch, and

touch after just two minutes to put the Owls in good stead for all three points, with Steven Fletcher sealing the result in the second half. Murphy said: “The stadium was rocking today, it really was. We got off to a good start and they were fully behind us. “It’s a perfect start for myself, to get a goal
that early on. It settled the nerves a bit! “It’s a fantastic three points and I’m absolutely buzzing.” Fellow winger, and new recruit, Kadeem Harris was also on top form in the Owls’ win over Barnsley, and Murphy had plenty of praise for his teammate. The 24-year-old added: “Kadeem was

TRANSFER WINDOW TRIO FAN COLUMN BY CHRIS PLATTS
It can’t be said that its easy being a Sheffield Wednesday fan. Throughout the summer we’ve had our manager leave in the middle of pre-season, delayed publication of accounts resulting in a ‘soft’ transfer embargo, leading to very little to speak about on in terms of transfers. This all changed within a matter of days last week. It all started with Lucas Joao leaving the club for the team he scored against on the previous weekend. It was rumoured to be £5 million plus add-ons, leading to a potential £7 million in total. This allowed The Owls a little bit of wiggle room in the transfer market before it closed on Thursday afternoon. The results were Jacob Murphy arriving on loan from Newcastle United. Possibly an olive branch after their conduct over the Steve Bruce saga. David Bates arriving on loan from Hamburg to provide defensive cover.
Finally, Australian international Massimo Luongo signed for an undisclosed fee (rumoured to be £1 million) from QPR. The former proving a great signing on debut against Barnsley. Murphy scored within 2 minutes of kick off. He was also instrumental in the second, after a mazy run down the wing, he slotted it inside to Kieran Lee, who passed it onto Fletcher to coolly finish in the bottom corner. Luongo came on late in the game and looked impressive with some neat touches and solid midfield work. It will be interesting to see Bates in action as he was much coveted throughout the transfer window by both English and German teams. Two wins out of 2 for the first time since 96/97 leaves Wednesday top of the league. With a more balanced squad and positivity surrounding the team, is it too early to dream of a happy ending in May? Only time will tell.

BLADES OFF THE MARK AS PREMIERSHIP STARTS United earned a deserved point on the opening day as sub Billy Sharp bagged a close-range strike with two minutes remaining to earn the Blades a draw at Bournemouth. Last season’s leading marksman was on hand to pounce after Oli McBurnie’s effort was blocked to send the travelling United contingent into raptures. The point was nothing more than the Blades deserved after an impressive first half, backed up by a strong finish at the Vitality Stadium. Boss Chris Wilder named two close season arrivals in his first Premier League team with the returning Dean Henderson, and striker Callum Robinson getting the nod for the Blades’ first top flight encounter since 2007. There was also a return in defence for Jack O’Connell after he missed the back end of the pre-season friendlies, whilst new boys McBurnie, Luke Freeman, Phil
Jagielka, Ben Osborn and Mo Besic were named amongst the substitutes. United made an electric start in front of a packed Vitality Stadium. A ball over the top by John Lundstrum caught the home defence napping as David McGoldrick broke through, but on the stretch his effort was palmed away by ex-Blade Aaron Ramsdale. Bournemouth quickly responded as Adam Smith raided down the right. His cross was cleared onto George Baldock where there was half a shout for a penalty after he brought the ball under control, but referee Kevin Friend waved away the appeals. The hosts then enjoyed a spell of possession but United looked solid as the game settled down following a frenetic start. The Blades were given a warning on 10 minutes as Lundstram’s cross was headed clear, providing a platform for a swift counter which eventually came to nothing after
Ryan Fraser’s initial run was ended with a poor cross by Callum Wilson. Despite the hosts enjoying pockets of possession, it was United who had the best chances. After some neat build up play which saw the ball moved from left to right, a pass was eventually slotted into the feet of Robinson. The ex-Preston hit man swivelled before shooting low to again bring a save out of Ramsdale to his right. At the other end Philip Billing fired high and wide as Henderson remained largely untroubled. The Blades continued to carry the greater threat in front of goal and when John Fleck’s corner was returned to the Scot, he played it inside for Lundstrum who dragged a shot wide of the near post. Bournemouth’s best chance arrived on the stroke of half time when the ball fell fortuitously for Chris Mepham who drilled wide under pressure after a challenge by John Egan. There was still time for Robinson
to threaten before the interval but after some impressive control on the edge of the area his shot was blocked. United started the second half on the front foot and created two quickfire openings. First Enda Stevens looked like he was clear on goal after he latched onto a flick around the corner, only for Mepham to get back and make a last-ditch challenge. A minute later and McGoldrick chased a ball in behind before drilling a well-hit shot just beyond the far post. Bournemouth briefly threatened as Jefferson Lerma took aim from 25 yards but Fleck was there to make an heroic block for the Blades. Once again it was United who looked the more likely to break the deadlock. This time it was Lundstrum who advanced and his inviting low cross fizzed across the area, just beyond the lurking Robinson. On the hour Henderson was called into action for the first time when he flung himself to his left at full stretch to
keep out a fierce drive by Billing. Despite United having the better opportunities, it was the home side who took the lead on 62 minutes. After Stevens upended Fraser, the resulting free-kick was kept alive at the back post. Wilson looked set to score, only to be denied by Henderson, with the follow up drilled home by MEPHAM. United made the first change of the game as record signing McBurnie replaced McGoldrick. The Blades quickly regained the momentum, and inside the final quarter the pressure began to build on the home side. McBurnie was unfortunate when he seized upon a long
clearance, but Ake’s accidental touch took the ball through to Ramsdale. The Blades continued to crank up the pressure, but Fleck’s aerial challenge brought about a VAR check for foul play, which was rightly waved off after review. With two minutes remaining United’s persistence finally paid off. After Freeman was fouled 30 yards from goal, a clever pass from Ollie Norwood found Baldock creeping around the back of the wall. His low crossed arrowed across the area, and after McBurnie’s effort was blocked, SHARP was on hand to net from close range.
McGoldrick raced through on goal with only 30 seconds on the clock. It was ironic therefore that he was denied by former Blades apprentice Aaron Ramsdale, also making his debut for Bournemouth. It was clear the Chris Wilder had no intention of sacrificing the tactics and bold approach that has taken them to this position; whether we see the same approach against Manchester City et. al remains to be seen! If there’s a lesson
to be learned from Saturday, it’s that chances will be at a premium this year, and it will be crucial to take them. Despite United making all the best opportunities, they fell behind to the one decent opening in the area fashioned by the hosts. Not surpirisingly Wilder chose to stick with the core of last year’s team, with Callum Robinson the only new face in the starting eleven, and the bench packed with the new recruits. John Lundstrum has been a pre-season
surprise, and was rewarded with a chance on the ptich which he grasped with both hands, providing chances for McGoldrick with two superb through balls, and producingan impressive set of match stats overall which more than justified his selection. It’s difficult to understand why we’ve received so much negative press from the pundits pre-season; you can only imagine they haven’t seen much of us and are writing from misconceived

LESSONS TO BE LEARNED FROM BOURNEMOUTH So what should we make of the Blades’ first match in the Premiership? Bournemouth are one of the teams to be measured against when the team assesses its capabilities of remaining in the league, and it’s fair to say that they weren’t found wanting against a team that admittedly were missing some of their first choice players due to injury. Nevertheless we saw a confident and attacking performance which almost enjoyed a drema styart as

opinions of United teams in the past! Certainly there is more than enough quality on the ptich to worry a good few teams in this league, and the club have demonstrated
a recruitment policy that tempers forwardthinking woith longterm prudence - a stark contrast to Aston Villa, for example, with spending in excess of £140 million.
