FLAGS FLY HIGH IN SHEFFIELD’S AWARD WINNING PARKS Sheffield’s wonderful parks and green spaces have once again been recognised by environmental charity Keep Britain Tidy, with 13 Green Flags awarded to parks across the city. The winning parks, green spaces and woodlands have been recognised for their environmental character, maintenance and visitor experience. Each of the flags are testament to the hard work of staff, friends’ groups and volunteers, who work together
to maintain the high standards expected by the Green Flag Award. Sheffield’s award winning parks are the Botanical Gardens, Cholera Grounds and Clay Wood, Devonshire Green, Ecclesall Woods, Firth Park, Meersbrook Park, Millhouses Park, Norfolk Heritage Park, Peace Gardens, Weston Park, Wheata Woods, Winter Gardens and Tinsley Green. Councillor Mary Lea, Cabinet Member for Culture, Parks and
Leisure at Sheffield City Council, said: “I believe we have some of the best parks, green spaces and woodlands in the country so I’m delighted that they’ve been recognised once again. These awards are testament to the hard work, passion and dedication of the many staff, friends’ groups and volunteers who work tirelessly to uphold the high standards we have come to expect. “Our parks play an essential role within our communities, not
only providing excellent outdoor leisure and play facilities but also contributing to the improved health and wellbeing of Sheffielders. Whether that’s through running, cycling, gardening, being part of a Friends Group, climbing on playgrounds or a simple stroll, these outdoor spaces offer so many ways to be physically active and mentally stimulated. “It’s no secret that we are managing our parks through extremely
challenging times, so it’s fantastic to see them continuing to flourish and get the recognition they deserve.” In addition to the main awards, Green Flag Community Awards were also awarded for the second year running to Devon Gardens (Friends of Devon Gardens), Grenoside Green (Friends of Grenoside Green), Meersbrook Community Walled Garden (Meersbrook Park Users Trust), and Firth Park Community Allotment, Heeley City Farm, Wortley Hall Walled Garden and Norfolk Park Community Garden (Heeley City Farm).

Fronted by founding member Thijs Van Leer, and best known for their hits ‘Hocus Pocus’, ‘House of The King’ and ‘Sylvia’, as well as critically acclaimed albums ‘Moving Waves’, ‘Focus 3’ and ‘Hamburger Concerto’, the iconic Dutch music masters are back with their tenth album, which is guaranteed to please their legions of fans! After a comeback in the early 2000s, which resulted in the well-received albums ‘Focus 8’ and ‘Focus 9’, the band regrouped with a fantastic new line-up. Along with Thijs van Leer on vocals, flute and keyboards, back on the drums is famed Focus drummer Pierre van der Linden, who joined the group on their second album ‘Moving

BEIGHTON TOP CLUB GOES FROM STRENGTH TO STRENGTH Beighton Top Club, the area’s newest CIU affiliated club, continues to go from strength to strength as the local community rallies round to support the incredibly hard work put in by members of the Committee. The latest project, recently completed, has been the total refurbishment of the Tap Room, providing a modern and comfortable facility for the members
to relax while perhaps enjoying a game of snooker on the newlysurfaced match table, or simply sitting back & watching the newlyinstalled large screen TVs. In the eighteen months since the club re-opened its doors, there has been a steady stream of new members, and interest from local groups (such as Slimming World) as the club has proved there is a demand for a facility run by the community,
for the community. The local public have demonstrated their support by coming through the doors, to enjoy a quiet drink or watch the quality live
entertainment offered every Saturday night. If you’ve not been to see what the club offers, why not pop along and take a look?

11 STRONG TEAM TAKE PART IN 127 MILE CANOE TRIP FOR SHEFFIELD CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL A team of eleven colleagues are set to canoe 127 miles from Liverpool to Leeds to support The Children’s Hospital Charity this September. The oar-inspiring team will take on the rowing challenge on 13 September for four days, navigating the waterways to raise money for Sheffield Children’s. The money raised will go towards the Build a Better Future appeal, funding a new Emergency Department which saw 56,956 patients last year. Most people decide their sandwich filling on a lunch break but the Leeds-based team in the Openreach regulatory and operations divisions went overboard and decided to take to the canals! Streetworks finance manager Tony Hockey explained: “Myself and a colleague were
walking down the Leeds canal on our lunch break and we said it would be fun to canoe along here. We mentioned it to a couple of people back at the office and they took us seriously!” Fellow team member Chloe Jones added: “We were moved by the improvements The Children’s Hospital Charity are trying to make for patients. The cause makes the challenge more than worth it and if we can contribute anything towards it that would be fantastic. “We are much more suited to spending a weekend supping beer, straightening hair, watching sport and finishing it with all with a lovely Sunday roast – so this is a crazy challenge for us.” The inspiring team will be borrowing four canoes which have been donated by local

Patients at Sheffield Children’s Hospital will also have the chance to name two of the canoes over the coming weeks, with the final boat being named by a member of the public through a draw in exchange for a donation. Everything has been provided free of charge, ensuring that every penny raised goes directly to help Sheffield Children’s Hospital. And so far over £1,000 has already been raised. The build a Better Future appeal will support Sheffield Children’s Emergency Department, which is a nationally designated Major Trauma Centre for South Yorkshire and Bassetlaw. The department was designed to see 32,000 children a year but now sees nearly 60,000. The creation of an on-site helipad will mean patients can be brought the hospital via air ambulance outside of daylight hours, avoiding landing in the nearby Weston Park and crossing the A57 to access the Emergency Department – providing increased safety and dignity for patients needing to be seen by the department. Sophie Coburn, Corporate Partnerships Officer at The Children’s Hospital Charity, said: “We couldn’t quite believe it when we first heard about this challenge! To canoe 127 miles is quite a feat, and we’re so glad they’ve chosen Sheffield Children’s to support. “We can’t wait to follow their journey as they build a better future for our young patients from across the country!” To support their fundraising, search ‘Row Row Row Ya Boat’ on Facebook or visit: https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/ rowrowrowyaboat

ISSUE 1332 21/08/2019
first aid for the summer - avoiding bites & stings Our British summer is here but accompanying those warm lazy days is a multitude of 6 legged creatures - some of which can bite and sting, and the wet weather is causing an increase in breeeding rate of many of these insects. Being stung by an insect can be painful and happily, for most of us it’s only a minor irritation, but for those who find themselves allergic, the consequences can be extremely serious. Warm and rainy days are the perfect breeding conditions for a whole host of insects and in the UK those which will bite or sting include: • Bees, wasps and hornets • Gnats, midges and mosquitoes • Horseflies, Ticks, Fleas, and Bedbugs If you are travelling abroad your list could also include spiders, scorpions, snakes and jellyfish so it is definitely worth checking out the local creatures before you go. Symptoms of bites and stings Bites and stings leave a puncture would in your skin and some stinging insects will leave behind saliva or venom or even the ‘stinger’ itself. If the stinger is visible in your skin then you should remove it by scraping it carefully from the side with the edge of your fingernail. There may be some discomfort, redness, itching or swelling from a bite or sting but this will generally improve within a few days without treatment. You can, however, ease the symptoms in the meantime by
applying a cold compress or flannel to the affected area and take an antihistamine. Allergic reaction to a bite or sting Urgent medical care will be needed if you are allergic as the whole body can react very strongly to a bite or sting within minutes. A severe reaction can lead to anaphylactic shock which is a medical emergency. Warning signs and symptoms to an allergic reaction include: • Blotchy or itchy rash anywhere on the body and general redness of the skin, swelling of the face, tongue, throat or airways, • Wheezing or inability to catch their breath, • Stomach cramps and nausea, • Fast heart rate and fainting If someone knows they are allergic they may have an alert badge with them and an adrenalin pen which can be injected in the arm or leg. (sometimes known as an Epi pen) Instructions on how to administer adrenalin will be written on the side of the auto-injector pen. At this point an ambulance must be called. If the person’s breathing stops then chest compressions and rescue breaths – resuscitation – must be started. If you are anxious about giving mouthto-mouth to a stranger and are not trained in CPR then you should focus on giving chest compressions. Put the heel of your hand on the breastbone at the centre of the person’s chest. Place your other hand
on top of your first hand and interlock your fingers. Lean forward so that your shoulders are directly over the patient’s chest and using your body weight (not just your arms) press down on the chest about two inches. Release the pressure, but not your hands, and let the chest come back up. Repeat this until an ambulance arrives. Try to give 100 chest compressions per minute. Not sure what that really means? Push to beat of the Bee Gees song “Stayin’ Alive.” Keeping yourself safe If you know you are allergic to insect bites or stings then take note of these simple tips from Allergy UK, to keep yourself safe: • Wear a medic alert bracelet or medallion and carry an adrenalin pen if you need one. • Tell loved ones, friends, work colleagues of your allergy. • Do not drink out of cans, as wasps like to crawl inside. • Avoid picking up fallen fruit, as again there may be a wasp in it. • Try not to walk barefoot on grass, particularly if there is clover in it. • Wear long sleeves and trousers. • Apply insect repellent. • Try not to panic if you see a wasp, hornet or bee – do not wave your arms around or try to swat them
major road closures
your voice counts!
Lane and road closures have been place on two of Sheffield’s busiest routes. Over coming weeks this will continue whilst essential testing of the Variable Message Signs (VMS) and general maintenance work gets underway. There will be lane closures on the Sheffield Parkway to allow the council’s highways contractor, Amey, to undertake important inspections of the VMS signs. All works have been planned to avoid the busiest travel times, with closures in place on Sundays, overnight and during the middle of the day. VMS signs are used to inform motorists of incidents, accidents or diversions. Testing of the signs will take place on the Sheffield Parkway, every Sunday in August from 6am to 6pm, plus Sunday 1 September. During this time, there will be lane closures both in and out of the city to allow the work to be completed safely. In addition, general maintenance work will take place on Mosborough Parkway during September, with sections of the road being closed over several days, starting on Wednesday 4 September. Works will take place during the hours of 10.15am – 2.30pm and diversions will be in place. There will also be two complete overnight road closures on Mosborough
Parkway, from 10pm to 5am, on the following dates: Wednesday 4th September from Coisley Hill to Moss Way (southbound into the city); Saturday 7 September from the junction with Sheffield Parkway to Coisley Hill in both directions in and out of the city. Melissa Wise, Operational Director at Streets Ahead says of the work, “We are aware that lane and road closures can cause disruption, particularly on main routes, so we have made sure that we maintain two-way traffic, wherever possible. However, we need to close lanes in close proximity of our work to ensure the safety of our employees and motorists alike. We urge everyone to take extra care when driving around roadwork’s and to follow diversions and speed restrictions whilst our inspections are completed.” Road signage will be in place during the works to inform motorists of diversions. Work on Mosborough Parkway starts on 4th September and continues on the 5th, 7th, 8th, 10th, 11th, 15th and 22nd. To find out more about the Streets Ahead programme of works, visit: www. sheffield.gov.uk/streetsahead
have your say on local sne needs Are you a parent or carer of a child with a Special Educational Need and / or Disability (SEND)? If so, we want your help! Together with our partners, including Sheffield Parent Carer Forum, schools and health services, we are developing an Inclusion Strategy for Sheffield. The strategy will set our priorities for the next five years and help us to improve our services for children and young people
with SEND. Can you help us to develop it by taking a few minutes to fill in our online survey? We are looking for responses from people directly involved in the use of our services to help shape direction. It’s online at www.snapsurveys.com/ It won’t take you long, it’s open until Sunday 22 September and what you tell us will make a difference!
Healthwatch Sheffield is a watchdog for local health and social care services. Our ambition is to work in partnership with local people, to ensure that the views and experiences of our communities are heard by the people making decisions about health and social care. We have developed a short survey to find out about the experiences of people aged 65+ who use health and/or care services in Sheffield. The survey can be completed online: www.surveymonkey. co.uk/r/2WWBF5C You are welcome to print off copies of the survey or please let us know if you would like us to send paper copies and freepost envelopes, stating the amount required and your postal address. Please return completed surveys to us by email l.cook@healthwatchsheffield.co.uk or by post: Healthwatch Sheffield, The Circle, 33 Rockingham Lane, Sheffield, S1 4FW We may be able to send our volunteers to help people fill in the surveys, so please let us know if you would like to arrange a visit. The survey will be open until Monday 9th September. Any queries? Please contact Laura Cook by email (see above) or on 01142 536688/ 01142 536646

I’m guessing it’s because fishing is a relatively solitary pastime, so without anyone to see, our personal standards slip, and we think we can get away with it. Although I fear that is the truth, it stills shocks me that anyone can be comfortable If you have any local sports news please send an email to info@mercurynewspaper.co.uk with it. In an era of ‘climate change’ and ‘extinction rebellion’ where we realise that this week I’ve found a ridiculous amount littering is just part of the global problem, again. I’m sure that every angler who we should all be doing our bit to alleviate reads this will think “it’s not me”, well it with Clint Walker environmental damage. I’m sick of is; as long as other anglers see fit to dump hearing that we anglers protect the rivers I went for a picnic with my their rubbish, discarded line and who and lakes by our presence, that we prevent grandchildren this week, choosing a knows what else on the bank, then we’re others causing harm, because the truth is spot in a lovely local park, a beautiful all tarred with the same brush I’m afraid. that we don’t, we make a mess and can’t area of grassland right next to the You can deny it all you like, but the truth defend ourselves until things change… river; perfect. is we’re all anglers, so we’re all guilty until littering becomes as unacceptable as After we finished eating, I lined all five of until it stops completely and it’s up to us drink driving is to the general public. them up, and explained that we needed to and us alone. During my latest session, I found a nest pick up our leftovers, secure any rubbish I’ve lost count of the number of times I’ve of line which I’d estimate to have a and dispose of it properly before we could been sat peacefully on the bank, only to breaking strain of at least 50lb on a catfish leave, which we did, and left the park notice a tangle of discarded line shoved in water. Someone has stripped that from exactly as we’d found it…so why can’t the bushes, an empty can of Spam or corn their reel, wound it around their hand, anglers do the same when they go fishing? rusting in the shallows, groundbait bags and rather than cut it up and place it in a I know I’ve mentioned it my columns wafting past on gusts of wind and it has bag for proper disposal or recycling, has before, but the one thing which really to stop! What is the solution? It certainly made a conscious effort to stuff it into a gets my goat is anglers leaving litter and bush to try to hide it. In summer, when isn’t down to the fishery to provide bins the leaves are out, it was well hidden, but and take responsibility (and cost) for in winter, it would be revealed in all it’s clearing them, it’s down to you and me foul reality. What happens if a bird gets every time. I’m sure you teach your kids tangled in it? A squirrel? A rabbit? There not to leave litter when you’re out and is no way that any of those would be able about, and if they did, you’d be mortally embarrassed if anyone pulled you up for it, so why is it suddenly acceptable on the NEW AND USED FISHING TACKLE bank?

to escape the jumble of mono, and nor will it decay, so the only option is that the poor creature will starve to death and that is disgustingly preventable! Don’t get me wrong, I’m preaching from a position of perfection; I’ve probably inadvertently left odd shot on the bank, perhaps a trimming of braid or a Spam tin key, but I make a valid effort every time I vacate a peg to leave it tidy. I take a bag and if I need to clear the rubbish of others before I fish, then I have a roll of bin bags and a litter picker in the van. I don’t like to clear up after other anglers (especially disgusting foul waste) but I don’t want to leave it for someone else either, because it HAS to picked up by somebody! I’ve come away with three or four bin bags full in the past, crammed stinking into the back of the van, but better in my bin than left on the bank. YOU have to take ownership whilst you’re fishing, your enjoyment comes with that responsibility, and we have to address it as a group. None of us are daft, we all know that leaving rubbish is wrong, so we HAVE to do something about it. If we don’t, then someone else will do it for us and we may not appreciate the outcome if fisheries are closed and permissions withdrawn. My message this week is simple; you took it to the bank, YOU need to take it home with you… no excuses!

THE LADS PUT THEIR BODIES TWO NEW SCHOLARS SIGN ON THE LINE - WARNE UP AT MILLERS ACADEMY MILLERS chief Paul Warne believes that the nature of his side’s single goal victory over Burton Albion is laying down a marker to their Sky Bet League One rivals. The AESSEAL New York Stadium outfit made it two wins out of three on the road thanks to Ben Wiles’ first-half effort which unluckily ricocheted into the Burton net from home ‘stopper Kieran O’Hara. After failing to notch a decisive second goal, Warne’s side had to weather a late rally from the hosts before recording victory – with Nathan Broadhead blasting over from close range before sub David Templeton rattled the
Millers crossbar with a sweet strike. With the Millers making the short hop back to South Yorkshire with the three points, the Rotherham boss was delighted to toast victory despite admitting that his side were not firing on all cylinders. “I don’t think we were fully firing on our best although we created enough chances to win the game comfortably, we didn’t take them,” Warne conceded. “The pitch was a little dry and we did not move the ball well enough. I don’t think we were as good on the ball but our off the ball work was excellent and the lads were putting their
bodies on the line. We looked a threat of every set-piece and I was disappointed we did not score from that but overall, I’m pretty pleased. “I’m always happy with a clean sheet. They had a couple of chances late on but they are always going to create chances. We needed a second goal but we weren’t ruthless enough to get it.” Warne continued to employ his threepronged attack in Staffordshire – but with midfielders Shaun MacDonald and Jamie Lindsay thrown on in the latter stages of the game to preserve his side’s slender advantage, the Millers supremo
admitted that his side’s new formation was a work-inprogress. “We played three upfront again today and it did not work as well as I’d like but it’s going to take some time.” Warne added. “We come with an intent to win and create chances. To win football matches is great but to win away from home is even sweeter. “To come to a place like this, as I think Burton will be top-ten, and win is a real statement of intent and apart from the home game, we have had a good start to the season so I’m happy with the group.”
Every young footballer dreams of signing a professional contract, and two more rising stars are one step closer to that after securing scholarship deals with Rotherham United’s Academy. Jake Champion and Zack Bond have impressed enough to be offered the opportunity to continue their development with the Millers, with both players now looking ahead to the 2019/20 campaign. The duo both joined the academy system last year and they have thrived with the support of the staff. Jake has made significant improvements in his technical ability and he has played up an age group since his arrival, whilst Zack is seen as an ‘old school’ winger with
a real eye for a cross. Having identified the potential in both of the players last year, Tom Hunter, Head of Recruitment and U15s Coach at the Millers Academy, is delighted to see them grasp the deserved opportunity with both hands. He said: “Zack and Jake both joined the academy last season after they were scouted playing for their grassroots teams. Both have worked extremely hard since coming into the academy set up and have regularly played with the older academy age group. “Their success highlights the quality of players around the area and as such, the academy are working closely with grassroots clubs to identify talented players that have potential to play
MAY TALKS ROVERS TEAM SPIRIT MOORE PRAISES ROVERS' HARD Alfie May has said team spirit is sky high in the Rovers changing room. Rovers have signed 10 players so far this summer and May says every one of them has had a positive impact on the squad. He said: “All the new
signings have been excellent and have settled in really well. The togetherness we have here at the club has always been good and that’s continuing. “Me and Joe Wright are on the hunt for fines and we keep finding excuses which is a good laugh
and it helps create a good atmosphere around the place. “Madger – along with all of the other new signings – have fit straight in and he is quite funny to be fair. He just keeps getting fined but he is a good lad and very talented.”
SHEAF DEVELOPING AT ROVERS Ben Sheaf has said he is enjoying his time at Rovers after putting pen to paper on a season-long loan from Arsenal in the summer. A star of the Gunners U23s side, this season is the midfielders’ first in Sky Bet League One but he did pick up some league experience spending a short time at League Two Stevenage last season. “League football is very different to U23s. There is less margin for error and there’s a lot more at stake – you’ve obviously got the crowd and the fans too, it’s great playing in front of them but there’s an added pressure there and it’s about learning how to handle that,” said Sheaf.
“I’ve got that League Two experience under my belt and that definitely helped me out, but League One is another step up. It’s been really good for me so far and I just want that to continue. “I’m really enjoying my football here. The manager has been brilliant, the lads have been brilliant and I just want it to carry on really. I’ve been pretty happy with my own performances and I’d say Saturday was my best performance but the most important thing is the result and the three points.” Sheaf generally lines up alongside Ben Whiteman and says he is learning a lot from Rovers’ skipper. “Ben and I are pretty similar players and everyone knows his technical quality and
his ability on the ball. I really enjoy playing alongside him and we have quite a good relationship in there. We try to dictate the game and get the team playing,” Sheaf added. “I think we’ve done quite a good job but we’ve got room to develop and improve and the more we play with each other, the better we’ll play and the results will follow. “I’m enjoying playing midfield, I feel like I’m adapting quite well but I don’t mind where I play, I just want to be out on the pitch in front of the fans playing as much as I can. Lining up alongside Ben is nice and then Copps is obviously a fantastic player I’m learning as much as I can from them.”
WORK IN FLEETWOOD VICTORY Manager Darren Moore felt that Rovers’ fighting spirit helped them over the line after Saturday’s dramatic 3-2 win over Fleetwood Town in Sky Bet League One. A 91st-minute owngoal from Wes Burns saw Rovers pick up a first three points under Moore after a topsy-turvy game at the Keepmoat Stadium, and the Rovers boss was quick to heap praise on his side. “It was a game that really ebbed and flowed for both sides throughout, Fleetwood started really well and got an early goal, but our fighting spirit and determination helped us to get back into the game,” he said. “It was a great advert for League One I thought, it was two teams that were at it from the off, Fleetwood are a very good team with some great players, so we knew we needed to up our game if we were to get anything out of it and the boys delivered. “Credit must go to the boys for the way that they stayed in the game, we thought Kieran
Sadlier might have won it a few minutes before the end on the edge of the box, you’d back him from there, but we got that luck at the end to win it.” Moore’s men remain unbeaten in the league after three games, and the gaffer believes the hard work his squad have been putting him is really starting to show. “We knew we had to work hard out of possession, and I thought at times we did well to nullify and contain them, but they always carried that threat going forward, we couldn’t afford to switch
off at any moment,” he added. “Like I said to the boys after the game, we’re not even six weeks in yet, this is a new team that has come together, they’re trying to do the right things, we’re trying to build here and these tough games will only help us further. “This game can prove to be a good marker for us in terms of a positive result, we had to fight and work very hard for it, we have another quick turn-around now with a game on Tuesday and we’ll look to go again.”
and progress through the academy. “It’s a really good time to be involved at the academy at the moment, we have a number of graduates involved with the first team currently which is great to see. “We hope that Zack and Jake can replicate this. They both have a huge chance to challenge themselves this season as the U15 squad takes part in the National Floodlit Cup, which kicks off at the end of
the month.” Rob Poulter, Lead Youth Development Phase Coach, added: “I`m delighted that Jake and Zack have committed to an academy scholarship and look forward to aiding their development over the next 2 years. “It’s my job to ensure they are fully prepared when they start their scholarship programme with the U18`s in the 2021/22 season.”

The County Senior League returned this past weekend. As always with the dawn of a new season, there a few new faces who have joined in the summer. There were just nine fixtures on Saturday to ease us into the new term. Premier Division Last years’ Premier Division winners North Gawber Colliery carried their excellent form from last season into the new campaign, as they won 3-1 away against Wombwell Main. Dodworth Miners Welfare are looking to build last season’s 2nd place finish, and they started with purpose, claiming a hard-fought 1-0 home win over Oughtibridge WMSC. High Green Villa gave Houghton Main a difficult welcome back to the Premier Division, as they beat them 4-1 at St George’s Park. New side Wakefield AFC were held to a 2-2 by Hepworth United at Far Lane. Division One There was a Wombwell derby at Wombwell Sporting AC to open the season, with Wombwell Town hosting Wombwell Main Reserves. A seven goal thriller ensued, with a brace from Bradley Kerr inspiring Town to a 4-3 victory. Along with Wombwell Town, Ardsley Athletico Juniors were also promoted in the summer. Sadly for Ardsley they came up against AFC Dronfield, who just missed out on promotion last summer, and fell to a 4-0 loss. Division Two Goals from Moussa Diouf 2, Jack Hackford 2, Max Rhodes, Sam Penney and Laszlo Lesko gave Sheffield FC Reserves a 7-4 home win over Swinton Athletic Reserves. There were a couple more new sides involved in the Second Division on Saturday. Firstly, Frecheville, who drew 2-2 with Thurcroft Miners Institute on their return to the County Senior League. Secondly, Bank End AFC opened their County Senior League account with a 4-2 win over Houghton Main Reserves at Barnsley Academy School.

FRUSTRATED BUT WE GO AGAIN Lee Bullen rued the Owls fortune in front of goal following Wednesday’s narrow 1-0 defeat to ten-man Millwall at the Den. Matt Smith scored the only goal of the game before Jed Wallace was sent off for a late foul on Kieran Lee, but despite 21 efforts on goal in a dominant second half display, the Owls failed to restore parity. Bullen said: “Overall the performance wasn’t a bad one and the lads
gave all they had, we will play a lot worse and win games this season. “We had 21 shots, nine on target, and we have to score with at least one of them. But I felt we just lacked that little bit of luck, nothing really clear-cut fell our way. “We were in control throughout the second half but we didn’t get the breaks or goals we deserved today. “It feels like we’ve been sucker-punched if I’m being honest but credit
to Millwall for the way they defended beneath some intense pressure in that second half.” Wednesday face Luton back at Hillsborough on Tuesday evening and Bullen is keen for the players to dust themselves down after Saturday’s defeat and go again. He added: “We won’t get too low when we lose, just as we won’t get too high when we win. “The best thing about this league is that there’s
always another game around the corner and now we’ll be aiming to put things right against Luton. “The fan base down here this afternoon were tremendous and like us, they will be on their way home thinking how did we not get anything from this game? “But we are back on the Hillsborough grass on Tuesday and hopefully we can get back to winning ways.”
LUONGO HAILS ‘UNBELIEVABLE’ HILLSBOROUGH CROWD
Luongo came off the bench against the Tykes for his first taste of the S6 atmosphere in a Wednesday shirt and was delighted with the experience. Speaking with Australian radio show Box2Box, the 26-year-old said: “I didn’t realise how big the club was until I got there and saw what they had to offer. “In the first game of the season we had 28,000 people, it was
unbelievable! “It’s a fantastic traditional stadium and every time I play there, I always hear the song just before kick off and you get goosebumps. “You get that feeling that I’m at a really big club here.” Having had his first full week training with the team, Luongo praised the quality in the Wednesday dressing room. He added: “There is pressure that everyone
expects Sheffield Wednesday to be in the top six and that’s one of the main reasons I signed. “Every time I played them, I thought this team should be up there all the time because they have quality players. “Having been here the last few weeks, I can see we have a really good team.”

LIONS TAME THE OWLS FAN COLUMN BY CHRIS PLATTS
Sheffield Wednesday suffered their first defeat of the season to a stubborn Millwall team. The Owls almost took the lead. First Palmer came close with a shot that was saved well by Bialkowski at his near post. Soon After that Reach almost scored an audacious long range shot after spotting the Millwall keeper of his line. Millwall took the lead after Westwood rashly came for a corner and missed. Leaving Matt Smith with a simple header into an empty goal. Murphy saw an effort curl just wide moments later. Before Jed Wallace was shown a straight
red after a reckless challenge on Kieran Lee just before half time. At the start of he second half Bannan replaced Iorfa as Wednesday looked for an equaliser. The Owls came close with efforts from Fletcher, Bannan and Rhodes but nothing came to fruition. Millwall will be delighted with their rear-guard action. For The Owls is was just one of those days. Lee Bullen’s side will need to pick themselves up quickly as Luton Town come to Hillsborough on Tuesday night. Wednesday will need to show more of a killer instinct if they ae to overturn The Hatters.

BLADES MAKE TRIUMPHANT PREMIER RETURN The return of Premier League football at Bramall Lane yielded a deserved success in front of the Sky cameras on Sunday afternoon. John Lundstram scored the only goal of a game the Blades dominated throughout the second-half, as Chris Wilder’s side made it four points from a possible six. For the first home fixture back in the top-flight, boss Wilder named an unchanged matchday squad, following the opening day draw at Bournemouth. The noise inside the stadium at kick-off was nothing short electric and the Blades were quickly out of the traps kicking towards the Kop. There was early concern after a positive start for the Blades, following a clash of heads between O’Connell and Benteke, but after treatment, the defender was able to return to the action. But it was Palace, who had the first
attempt on goal, as Benteke got the better of O’Connell before shooting tamely at Henderson. Lundstram was the first to be carded by referee Coote having caught Zaha. The Blades sprung forward though moments later and forced a corner, after Baldock found space on the right-wing, but Fleck’s deep delivery was headed wide by O’Connell. Robinson looked a threat in the wide areas and his work helped fashion a chance for Lundstram, but he dragged an effort wide from distance. As the first half progressed, the visitors started to threaten when in possession and Basham produced a vital header to deny Benteke from Townsend’s cross. At the other end, all four sides of the stadium appealed in vain for a penalty, despite Stevens shot appearing to catch the arm of Ward, before being blocked by Kelly. On 28 minutes, the
Blades were forced into a change, with Luke Freeman replacing the injured Fleck. United broke swiftly minutes later and Freeman picked out the run of Robinson, but from the edge of the area, under pressure from Dann he fired over. United’s endeavor continued to create half chances, this time Freeman had an effort blocked after Lundstram and Norwood had got the better of Milivojevic. With three minutes of the first half remaining, United created a golden opportunity to take the lead. Lundstram robbed Van Aanholt high up the pitch and whipped in an inviting low cross, but Guaita somehow denied McGoldrick from point-blank range. Within three minutes of the restart, United deservedly hit the front, as LUNDSTRAM fired home on the rebound after Guaita had denied Freeman, with O’Connell and Stevens also involved in the build-up down
the left wing, ramping up the atmosphere inside the Lane again. Palace looked for an immediate response, but Henderson was equal to Townsend’s effort. Robinson received a warm hand as he departed the action, as did his replacement McBurnie, on his home debut. Norwood’s glorious pass almost created another opportunity for the Blades, but Van Aanholt managed to stop Baldock’s cross at the expense of a corner, from which Guaita scrambled the ball clear. The visitors made a couple of changes, but it was still United
looking to force the issue in search of a second. After Guaita had punched clear a corner, Basham lifted the ball back into the danger zone and O’Connell almost squeezed his backpost header under the Palace goalkeeper. A clash between McCarthy and Baldock saw both players booked, after the Blades defender attempted to make a block high up the pitch. With substitute Freeman continuing to have a big impact on the game, the Blades forced another corner and only the presence of a defender stopped McBurnie heading home.
As the clock slowly ticked down, Freeman was booked for a foul on Ward, but United defended the resulting free kick from the right, with no alarms. The Blades snuffed out a Palace attack, with Zaha denied much to the delight of the home faithful, before the Lane rose to welcome the return of Jagielka as he replaced McGoldrick. The fourth official indicated a minimum of seven added minutes, but the Blades safely saw the game out, to net a deserved win, one that was celebrated ecstatically by the vast majority of the 30,000 crowd inside S2.
The 26-year-old, who joined in the summer of 2017 from the MK Dons, has been an integral part of United’s success in the last two seasons, which culminated
in promotion to the Premier League in April. Baldock has become a real crowd favourite with the S2 faithful and has scored twice in 67 appearances to date. The wing-back

has also impressed in United’s first two games back in the top-flight. Speaking having put pen-to-paper, Baldock remarked: “It’s been a great start to the season, we were confident we would start well and it was great to get the win against Palace at Bramall Lane, having earned a point at Bournemouth. “I’m absolutely buzzing, I love the city and I’m really in amongst it. I’m
excited about the future and what it could hold. “The club is going places and I want to be part of it, it was as
simple as that really when it came to the new deal. I just want to keep putting the performances in and see where it takes us.”
