CITY HONOURS MAN WHO FOUNDED UK’S FIRST FREE AND CANCER HOSPITALS Last week, the Lord Mayor of Sheffield, the Right Worshipful Councillor Tony Downing unveiled a plaque for one of the city’s most famous sons. Nearly 20 years ago a bronze plaque was erected at Watson’s Walk in honour of William Marsden, founder of the Royal Marsden Hospital in London. Marsden was born in a house very near to the top of the original

Watson’s Walk in 1796, close to the Dove and Rainbow pub in Hartshead Square. As a young man, Marsden left Sheffield to study at St. Bartholomew’s Hospital and was admitted as a member of the Royal College of Surgeons in 1827. In 1828, he founded the country’s first free hospital, the Royal Free Hospital, which was based on the principle “that disease and poverty should

be the only claims for admission.” In 1851, following the death of his wife from cancer, he opened a cancer hospital which is now known as the Royal Marsden. In his speech at the unveiling, The Lord Mayor of Sheffield, the Right Worshipful Councillor Tony Downing said: “For those of us used to the NHS, it is difficult to imagine just how revolutionary Marsden’s

new hospital was. The ‘Institution for the Gratuitous Cure of Malignant Diseases’ opened for business on 28 February 1828, and became known locally as the Free Hospital; and in 1837, when Queen Victoria became the patron, she changed the name to the Royal Free Hospital. “Sheffield, very appropriately commemorates a great surgeon and a visionary who devoted his life

both to the service of others and medicine; and therefore we are delighted to honour one of Sheffield’s proud sons here today.” The original bronze plaque went missing before 2009, though there is still a mark where it was attached to the wall. The Aesculapian Society of Sheffield, working with Sheffield City Council, has sponsored the making of a new blue plaque with identical wording to the original.

Three family-fun ‘parties in the park’ are set to take place in three city parks this September, in Oxley Park, Herdings Park and Parson Cross Park. Each party will have a music stage, live music performed by Michael Bublé, Robbie Williams, Jersey Boys and Madness tribute acts, and children’s activities from 11am to 4pm on the 1st , 8th and 15th September. They have been planned as the finale to the city’s summer celebrations of ‘100 years of Council Housing’ in Sheffield, where residents have shared their stories of moving into their new homes all of those years ago. The celebrations so far have seen the city marking a landmark event that saw large scale council estates spring up across Sheffield when The Addison Act was introduced across the UK in 1919. The act meant that local authorities could develop new housing for working people and followed a speech by Prime Minister Lloyd George as British troops returned from The Great War, calling for ‘a country fit for heroes to live in.’ At this time, Sheffield embraced the challenge to provide high quality, well-proportioned housing, with gardens where possible, which was a very big change from working class housing at the time. Work quickly got underway to do this with the building of Norwood estate, followed by the estates at Walkley, Woodhouse, Handsworth, Wadsley, Brushes, Stubbin and the Manor. These parties are an opportunity for local people to enjoy a family fun event near where they live and

further showcase the 100 Years of Council Housing stories that many residents have shared this summer. As well as the musical line up the events we’ll be bringing some of this history to life on the big screen including clips of local residents telling their stories, a 10 minute film of a tram ride through Sheffield in 1902 and a 10 minute film of a tram ride through Sheffield in 1960, both very popular films at the time. Hallam FM’s Street Team and the Hallam FM branded car will be on site with a family pop up area offering giant games and a free competition. Councillor Paul Wood, Cabinet Member for Neighbourhoods and Community Safety said: “This summer we’ve been celebrating the first ever council housing that was built 100 years ago and these parties will round off the celebrations with music and family fun. The events are all free so we hope that lots of people attend either for some of all of each event.”

loneliness the biggest fear Loneliness is the biggest retirement worry for UK adults according to new research. The study, which reveals the nation’s biggest retirement fears, found that a quarter of Brits (24%) admit that loneliness, followed by having to work to cover a financial shortfall (23%), and relying on the state for long-term care (23%) are their major woes looking ahead to the future. Having a lack of purpose (21%) and losing touch with friends and colleagues (13%) also made the list. And the fear of being alone when work no longer forms a major part of one’s life, is felt most keenly among 1824 year olds. The research showed that almost a third of this age group (31%) were significantly more concerned than any other age group. Those aged 35-44 fear having to work either part or full time to cover a financial shortfall (27%). While the older age groups - 45 and over- are troubled more about having to rely on the state for longterm care; 26% of 45-54 year olds and 25% of 55-64 year olds. Interestingly, a lack of purpose was cited as one of the biggest worries about retirement by a third (31%) of those aged over 65. Jason Hollands, said: “Loneliness can be triggered by a variety of factors from losing a loved one or the breakdown of a relationship, to not having the opportunity to meet new people or afford new experiences. And, in most cases, these events tend to occur later in life. But our research points to a growing concern amongst younger age groups who, rather than being preoccupied about the financial implication of no longer receiving an income from employment, are concerned about the lack of companionship this future life stage may lead to. Those in or nearing retirement can be particularly vulnerable to loneliness - with financial concerns

having a major impact and children having flown the nest - but the fact that this is a pressing concern for those at the start of their working lives suggests the importance of being well prepared for a change in circumstances. “ Despite having their working life ahead of them, millennials are more likely to worry about becoming a financial burden on their family (24%) than those aged 55+ (11%). The study follows analysis[2] of the English Longitudinal Study of Aging by Age UK, which found that people aged over 50 and living in England are 2.3 times more likely to be lonely if they have money issues that prevent them doing things they want to do. More than a quarter (26%) of UK adults say they have no worries about retirement, despite admitting they have spoken to a financial adviser. Hollands continues: “A key weapon in fighting loneliness in later life is financial security. Having money set aside to do the things you enjoy throughout your retirement enables you to get out of the home, socialise, take holidays and be involved with others. For those with care needs, it also enables at-home help, avoiding the isolation-trap that those with limited physical abilities fear falling into.“here is no ‘one size fits all’ approach to retirement planning. Some retirees want to travel the world or take up a new hobby. Others see it as an opportunity to volunteer, start their own business or undergo further education. Whatever the aspiration, a clear financial plan is imperative, and identifying retirement worries and aspirations should be an essential part of this process.“

peer pressure increases drinking

A third (35%) of drinkers drink more than they intended because they were encouraged by others, reveals a new study by independent alcohol education charity, Drinkaware. More than a third (34%) of adults who drink, report drinking more alcohol than they set out to because they were in a round, and third (29%) drink more because they did not want to be impolite and refuse a drink. Overall, Drinkaware’s annual monitor found that a majority of those who drink say they would like there to be less pressure to drink alcohol. Slightly over a third (35%) of drinkers say that pressure to drink alcohol is common in their age group. Some people employ avoidance tactics; over a third polled (30%) admit to having nursed their drink to avoid pressure to have another, while one in ten (11%) admit to actively seeking friends who drink little or no alcohol. Almost a third of drinkers (32%) drink more because they want to keep up with others. Friends are chief influential figures, with 60% of those who drink more than they intended to saying that they have been pressured by friends. Drinkaware’s research also reveals that a significant proportion of adults are contributing to a culture of pressure; a third (28%) adults who drink admitted to having encouraged someone to drink more alcohol after they said they didn’t want to. 1 in 5 had given someone an alcoholic drink or topped up their glass without asking first (21%). Drinkaware’s Chief Executive, Elaine Hindal, says: “Our research lifts the lid on a culture of peer pressure. there to be better health and wellbeing across the city and to tackle inequalities so that the most vulnerable can overcome obstacles and achieve their potential.” Jim Millns, Deputy Director of Mental Health Transformation at NHS Sheffield Clinical Commissioning Group added: “This project is an excellent example of organisations and services working together in the city to help people with mental health conditions. Improving mental health services is a priority for the city and this project is one example of how we are achieving this with our partners.” Kevan Taylor, Chief Executive at Sheffield Health and Social Care NHS Foundation Trust and Chair of the Executive Delivery Group of the Sheffield Accountable Care Partnership said: “We know how important the link is between mental health and support to live in your own home, and this is a fantastic opportunity for us to improve the wellbeing of people across the city and help them live independently. Projects like this really do highlight the positive impact organisations can have working together as part of the Accountable Care Partnership.” As part of the project people will be supported to identify their ambitions and goals for the future, helped to develop independent living skills, such as the ability to manage a tenancy while they’re living in residential or nursing care and supported to gain a qualification or follow a training or education programme that is relevant to their development needs and interests. The service will not only support people to make the transition to greater independence but also support them for two years after their transition to supported or independent living. Developed as a result of consultation with stakeholders, the project will run alongside existing services with no immediate changes to those services.

There will be consultation with those who currently use or have used residential mental health services to help shape the new service over the coming months. Over the lifetime of the project the consortium will work with 113 people and it is anticipated that more than 70 people will be supported to move to greater independence.

something different! In truth, such a revelation stunned many in the room into silence, but it was true; every single programme or idea previously hadn’t arrested the decline in licence sales, the drop in retail trade or the falling number of anglers on the bank! Genius! So, what did Carl suggest? He told of his experience with social media and correctly tabled the fact that most youngsters have access to a mobile device on which content or knowledge was immediately accessible. Society has changed from one in which an aspiring angler could go the tackle shop and ask advice from knowledgeable peers, or from angling parents, or by reading magazines and books, kids just don’t work that way these days, and the internet or social media channels HAS to be the way to engage with non-anglers. Carl’s observations went down well and it was considered that it would be worth pursuing further alongside several other ideas such as a trade levy (as in the USA) to be ringfenced and returned to angling, investigation of fishery assistance in making angling easier to get to and many others. Overall, I felt enthused by what I’d heard, maybe the ATA is finally going to make some headway and protect the sport that we all enjoy and introduce some more people to fishing with a set of new ideas; after all, once an angler, you’re hooked for life, so I await further developments with some enthusiasm… I’ll let you know what happens.

MOORE HAILS DETERMINED WARNE REMAINS HOPEFUL ROVERS AFTER LINCOLN WIN OF FURTHER ADDITIONS Manager Darren Moore felt his side showed a real determination to seal victory after outbattling Lincoln City at the Keepmoat Stadium. A stunning strike from Niall Ennis gave Rovers a first-half lead, and although Jorge Grant levelled for the Imps it was the home side who found a winning goal when Kazaiah Sterling fought to win the ball back in the final third and setup Jon Taylor for his first goal since joining the club. “They’ve shown a real commitment and desire, the energy and the work rate was

superb and they had great mental capacity to reset themselves after Lincoln got one back which was great to see,” said Moore. “I thought it was a really pulsating local derby, Lincoln were a very strong test for us and neither side really gave too much away, they came here and set their stalls out very early doors and they really are an impressive side to come up against. “They’ve had so much success over the past two or three years, they know what they’re about and the Cowley brothers are a great management team there, so we knew

we’d have to compete well to get anything from the game.” Moore made a double change with just under 20 minutes to go with Sterling and Taylor coming on, a switch that proved fruitful with the two combining for the winner. “We brought the two subs on at the right time, and it was great to see them combine for the goal, I’m really pleased that we’ve got the three points because it was no more than we deserved,” added the boss. “I said to the team before the game that it’d have to be a team effort to get

something from this, we wanted to put a marker down in terms of getting a result against a team like Lincoln - it proved difficult but it was great from the boys that came on. “They impacted the game exactly how we wanted, and they combined for the second goal which proved to be crucial in getting the three points. There’s a great spirit in the group and we’re starting to really come together as a team.”

COMPOSED STERLING ON THE RISE FOR ROVERS Kazaiah Sterling was pleased to make an impact for Rovers after coming on as a substitute in the win over Lincoln City which maintained his side’s impressive start to the Sky Bet League One season. Sterling provided the assist for Jon Taylor’s late winner at the Keepmoat Stadium, and says he had to stay composed in a

big moment in the game. He said: “I found myself picking up the ball in the right place at the right time, and managed to find Jon who finished it off really well. “It would have been easy to have a shot but I managed to stay composed and pick out somebody else rather than going for goal myself.

“The dressing room was full of energy after the game and everyone was really happy, we worked hard to get the win.” After making two cameo appearances following his loan from Premier League side Tottenham Hotspur, the 20-yearold is keen to repay the faith shown in him by manager Darren Moore.

He added: “Darren contacted Spurs and said that he wanted me, and as soon as I heard that I wanted to come here and play. “It’s a good feeling knowing that a manager made the approach for you, it’s encouraging and gives me confidence what I can do well for the club.”

WARNE ON THE MILLERS’ ENFORCED BREAK Having seen his side secure successive away victories in Sky Bet League One following last weekend’s hardfought win at Burton Albion, Paul Warne admits that it’s not an ideal time to be without a fixture. Rotherham United were scheduled to play Bury on Tuesday evening at the AESSEAL New York Stadium, but the Shakers’ financial troubles meant the game was postponed. Saturday’s trip to Portsmouth was also cancelled, and that game still remains to be rearranged for later on in the campaign. Due to that, the Millers aren’t in action again until they face Sheffield

Wednesday in the Carabao Cup Second Round on Wednesday 28th August, but the gaffer is keen to ensure the momentum continues. He said: “It’s disappointing that we’ve had two games off because we would’ve played three league games when the rest of the division would’ve played five, so the table is going to look a bit strange before we play against Tranmere at the end of the month. “We don’t really want a collection of fixtures to catch up on, that’s for sure. The lads are in a really good place at the moment because we’ve made a strong start,

so this enforced break may have been more welcome later on in the season when they need some downtime. “I always think it takes around six games to really see where you’re at, so with this halt in play, that has put that back a little bit. Despite that, we will look forward to the game against Sheffield Wednesday and then it’s back to the bread and butter of League One.” Although they will be without a competitive game until next week, Warne and his staff are putting the players through their paces and the manager revealed they would be holding an intra-squad friendly to keep the match

sharpness intact. On that, Warne added: “We’re having a game amongst ourselves on Thursday and we had the Open Day where the lads trained at the stadium, so that was really nice seeing loads of fans. We will continue to train hard and then I’ll let the squad have three days off before preparing for Wednesday. “It’s just a pity that having picked up back-to-back wins away from home, we couldn’t have the opportunity to follow that up with three points at home. We just have to attack the situation with a smile on our face and ensure that we give it our all.”

Rotherham United boss Paul Warne has reiterated his desire to add another defensive option to his squad, as the Millers prepared for a weekend without a fixture following the postponement of the Portsmouth fixture scheduled for Saturday. The lack of a first team game may have been timely for the Millers manager, who has a number of injuries amongst the defensive ranks and has explained that he is keen to add an experienced operator to his rearguard before the closure of the transfer window in the early stages of next month. “Ideally I would try and bring in a defensive player with a bit of experience that would be ready to walk in and play tomorrow if he was picked and for the next 30 games,” Warne revealed. “There are a couple of players I’m trying

to get in and these are lads I’ve watched quite a bit, so I know them really well. “I think that we’ve been pretty exhaustive in our hunt for ideal additions to the squad. “As always, you have extensive lists which you go through and then all of a sudden someone else becomes available that you wasn’t when you first started looking.” Warne continued to give an update on the current injury situations of his defenders and admits that had the Portsmouth clash gone ahead on Saturday, he would have had to reshuffle his pack. “At the moment, three of my full backs are injured. Matt Olosunde has a sore achilles, Billy [Jones] has Plantar fasciitis and Trev’s [Clarke] got a bad knee, so we’re down to one full back,” he continued. “If the game was tomorrow, I’d have to play Icky right back but if anything

After a slow start to the County Senior League last weekend, we had a much more busy second week, with the league experiencing its first midweek fixture list. Premier Division Last years’ double winners North Gawber Colliery suffered their first defeat of the season as they fell 2-1 at home against Hepworth United on Wednesday night. Hepworth followed that on Saturday with a 2-2 draw at home against Swinton Athletic. Swinton had beaten Wombwell Main 4-2 midweek, with the help of a brace from Justin Greenwood. Last years’ runner’s up Dodworth Miners Welfare sit atop the early table. Dodworth took four points this week, firstly they drew 3-3 away against Wakefield AFC, secondly on Saturday they beat Ecclesfield Red Rose 1915 3-1 at home. Penistone Church Reserves are the only team in the Premier Division who have played more than one game with an 100% record. Penistone claimed back-to-back home wins to open their season this week. An hat-trick from experienced marksman Tim Council gave them a 3-2 win over Burngreave FC on Wednesday evening. And goals from Reece High and Ben Matthews gave them a 2-0 win over Jubilee Sports on the weekend. Goals from Adam Thomas, Charles Tunnard and substitute Ross Brown gave Oughtibridge WMFC an hard-fought 3-2 away win over Frecheville Davys. Elsewhere, there was the first goalless draw of the Premier Division campaign at Chuacer School on Wednesday with the spoils shared between Ecclesfield Red Rose 1915 and High Green Villa. Division One Wombwell Town’s start to life in Division One has been excellent. They lead the way on goals scored. Wombwell were 3-1 winners midweek away at

happens to the rest of the back four, I have no defensive cover. It isn’t like we have lads like we did last season who can play in more than one position quite as comfortably as Will Vaulks and Semi Ajayi, so we would be snookered.” Meanwhile, whilst a defensive incoming appears likely, Warne also remains in the market for an attacker that can thrive playing

wide for his side, with options on the wing currently limited. “We have tried to add something as an attacking force and we need some cover at the back, or at least more options,” he said. “I think we need players who can play out wide and add something different to us. Whether that be someone with ridiculously good delivery or blistering pace.”

Division Two It has been an excellent start to life in the County Senior League for Kinsley Boys. Kinsley recorded back-to-back wins and clean-sheets this past week. A Jake Hogg hat-trick helped them to a 6-0 home win over Silkestone United midweek, and they followed that with a 2-0 win against Swinton Athletic Development on Saturday afternoon. A brace from Liam Foulstone inspired Sheffield FC Reserves to a 4-2 home victory over Burngreave FC Reserves, and a second win of the season. Swinton Athletic Reserves are the only other team on six points. Swinton lost their first game last week, but bounced back immediately with a 3-1 midweek win over Bank End, and 4-3 home win over Burngreave FC Reserves on Saturday. WE JUST FELL SHORT - BULLEN Lee Bullen said the Owls just fell short at the last as his side came close to salvaging a point at Preston. Steven Fletcher gave Wednesday a glimmer of hope with a late header after the hosts profited from two penalties, with Moses Odubajo twice adjudged to have fouled Sean Maguire in the box. But despite facing an onslaught in the closing stages, the hosts held on for the points. Bullen told swfc.co.uk: “It was too little too late

from us today so we leave disappointed. “We’ve made two mistakes and it’s cost us both times because they resulted in penalty kicks. “But listen, the one thing you don’t do as a team is hang anyone out to dry and Moses is in the dressing room devasted. “The lads will be right behind the boy because we have too good a group to think otherwise. “It’s about supporting Moses now because that’s what good teams do. Junior was spotted by the Owls playing amateur football in London as a teenager, he was invited for a week’s trial in which he impressed to earn his first professional contract.

The pacey striker became established in Wednesday’s Northern Intermediate side, where he scored 10 goals in 29 appearances during the 1996/97 season. Wednesday manager David Pleat handed Junior a place on the bench for the opening game of the 1997/98 season against Newcastle, with the forward making his Premier League debut aged 18 as a replacement for Guy Whittingham

He added: “The changes we made were positive and you can see the impact the substitutes had. “Fernando looked bright, Atdhe caused Preston some real problems and Reachy reacted exactly the way I thought he

would with a fantastic ball for the goal. “After that there was only one team in it but we just fell short in the end. “We have an important game now at Rotherham in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday night before an even bigger game back in our house on Saturday in the league against QPR. “That’s where the focus will be now, we dust ourselves down and we go again.”

TIME FOR PLAN B? with 13 minutes left on the clock at St James’ Park. The youngster also helped Wednesday win the Northern Conference of the FA Premier Youth League.

It can be said for all the times Lee Bullen has taken over as Caretaker Manager that we have had moderate success in the short term. Then the original success seems to peter out with a couple of not so good results before the new manager takes over. After the performance against Preston at the weekend I think we are starting to see things going the same way this time around. Ever since he took over there has been support for and against him taking the role full time. On one hand it is great to see a man in charge with such passion for the club and knows how it feels to be a fan. On the other hand, it can be said that his lack of experience in the top job works against him. At the moment this seems to be working against him. In the previous game against Luton we looked out of ideas and a bit sluggish in possession. Only to be gifted a goal by some sloppy

play from Luton. Then against Preston we only seemed to have one plan. Get the ball out wide and see what Harris and Murphy can do with the ball. There never seemed to be a plan B and try to do something different. Yes, we did try different formations and personnel on the pitch but it always seemed like the plan was the same. A bit predictable. It also didn’t help that we didn’t learn from the same mistakes for both Preston goals. What does irritate me slightly is that we did play differently at the beginning of preseason. Instead of the 4-5-1 approach we’re currently playing, we played a 4-4-2 system with Fletcher and Rhodes striking up what looked like a potentially lethal strike force. A positive result on Saturday against QPR and it will once again swing in Bullen’s favour. If not then it might be time for plan B both on and off the pitch.

BLADES SUFFER FIRST DEFEAT OF THE SEASON United slipped to a first defeat of the season, despite going toe-to-toe with 2016 Premier League champions Leicester City at Bramall Lane. Harvey Barnes settled the contest in favour of the Foxes, despite Oli McBurnie’s first for the Blades cancelling Jamie Vardy’s first-half opener. Boss Wilder made one enforced change for the clash against the Foxes, with Luke Freeman replacing the injured Fleck. Morrison was named in the matchday 18 for the first time since his summer arrival. The Blades once again received a inspiring reception as the players emerged from the tunnel at a sun soaked Bramall Lane and that was followed by a passionate rendition of Greasy Chip Butty. On the field, the home side were quickly on the front foot, with Freeman forcing an early corner which caused panic in the Foxes box. At the other end, Tielemans

dragged an effort wide after Perez broke down the right. Gradually the visitors were getting into the game and after Fuchs had fired a free-kick wide, Vardy failed to connect properly with a header in front of the Kop. In possession though, United continued to offer a threat and Lundstram fired over from distance after some neat build-up play, with Freeman continuing to impress. With the half hour approaching, the Blades fashioned the best chance of the game, Stevens and O’Connell combined on the left, before the latter crossed deep to Baldock, who stung the palms of Schmeichel with a dipping volley. In the 38th minute though, it was the visitors who took the lead. Basham lost possession in his own half and after Maddison played a ball through the Blades defence, VARDY latched on to it and fired left-footed past Henderson. United

looked for a response, but Robinson was adjudged to have fouled a retreating Evans from McGoldrick’s flick-on. Right on the stroke of half-time, United won a corner, but from Norwood’s deep delivery, O’Connell headed over from a promising position. Early in the secondhalf, City almost caught United on the break, with a swift counter attack, but Egan cleared a Perez shot after he, Maddison and Vardy

had combined. The Blades responded with a double change up top, with McBurnie and Robinson replaced with McBurnie and Sharp, who received a rousing reception. Lundstram was the first player to be carded for a foul on Maddison. But the decibel level inside S2 hit a new level on 62 minutes as MCBURNIE powered home a header past Schmeichel in front of the Kop after Norwood had kept his composure to

free Baldock, who provided the assist from the right. Eight minutes later though, the game swung back in favour of Leicester, as BARNES rifled home an unstoppable half volley from the edge of the penalty area, giving Henderson no chance. The Blades refused to lie down though and only a fantastic save from Schmeichel denied Lundstram from Sharp’s header down, but the assistant referee had already flagged for offside.

Basham was withdrawn and Morrison introduced for a home debut with 13 minutes left, as Wilder used his final change. The clocking was against the Blades, but the hosts kept pushing forward chasing an equaliser and forced a trio of corners in quick succession. Four minutes of added time were signaled, which gave the Blades hope, but despite throwing everything at City, the visitors held on.

after the 2-1 loss but Wilder found parts of the display “bewildering”. “I’m not going to applaud, credit or reward the players because they run around. Whatever the supporters do after

WILDER UNHAPPY WITH TEAM Sheffield United manager Chris Wilder said he will not “applaud, credit or reward” his players for effort alone after their home defeat by Leicester. The Blades were applauded by fans

is up to them but for me it’s a normal, natural thing to do and if they don’t they won’t play.”I’m not here to appease fans. I walked through the door three-anda-half years ago and set our standard, if

you keep giving the ball away you allow good players to gain momentum. We tried to gain momentum but we turned the ball over so cheaply it was frightening. We didn’t play quick enough. It’s disappointing and bewildering to see that happen for a team like us who are really good with the ball.” The clearly frustrated manager added: “I’m not pleased with effort because that is just a bog standard thing for me. Cheers for effort doesn’t tick a box for me. I didn’t
