PRAISE FOR SHEFFIELDERS RESPONSE TO THE CITY’S CLEAN AIR PLANS Nearly 12,000 Sheffield residents and businesses have had their say on sweeping plans to clean the city’s air. Following a fantastic number of responses, Sheffield City Council is today thanking everyone who responded to the Clean Air Zone consultation. More people responded to Sheffield’s Clean Air Zone consultation than they did in both Leeds and Birmingham when those cities held similar conversations about how to slash levels of nitrogen dioxide in the air. There was a late spike in consultation responses from local businesses, taxi

drivers and members of the public. The collective voices of all those responded will then inform the final clean air plans when they go before full cabinet later this year. An independent local company will be in charge of writing the final report which will be published in the autumn along with the data from the surveys. In total, 11,875 people responded to Sheffield’s Clean Air Zone proposals, with several hundred coming from local businesses. More than 2,300 responses came from private hire and taxi owners. Councillor Bob Johnson,

Cabinet Member for Transport and Development at Sheffield City Council, pictured above, said: “We’d like to thank the people of Sheffield for responding in such big numbers. We’ve had over three times as many responses as any other recent consultation and to get more responses than other big cities shows just how passionately people feel about this issue. “The clean air conversation will go on and we urge anyone who may be affected to get in touch with us. “From talking to the people of Sheffield over the last two months, the message

is clear – air pollution is a big issue and people want clean air. However we have to ensure that food can still be delivered, that buses still run and children can get on a coach for a school trip. “Our focus for next year, if we get the money we’ve asked for from government, will be to help the owners of these vehicles upgrade to the cleanest available before 2021” The Clean Air Zone plans, established after the government ordered major cities across the UK to improve air quality, encourages the most polluting vehicles to upgrade to electric, hybrid or cleaner engines. to be launched in 2021. Sheffield City Council is seeking £50m of government support to help drivers upgrade their vehicles and the council wants to work with taxi and van drivers, as well as every other fleet of vehicle affected, to encourage this. The consultation report will now be used to shape final plans, which will include the offers of support for local business people who will be affected by the clean air charging zone. If approved by cabinet, the plans will go to central government’s Joint Air Quality Unit (JAQU) to ask for funds to provide this support.

DONCASTER’S NEW CINEMA IS STARTING TO TAKE SHAPE

A new cinema and restaurant complex is beginning to take shape in the centre of Doncaster. The venue’s structure is almost complete on land next to CAST in the town’s Civic and Cultural and Civic Quarter. Bricklayers are expected on site later this month, with completion on target for spring next year.

Doncaster Council appointed Lindum to build the £8.5 million development, which will see the Nottingham-based operator Savoy open an impressive six screen cinema. In addition there has been three offers from interested parties for the five restaurant units and discussions are ongoing with other local and national operators.

Ros Jones, Mayor of Doncaster, said: “It’s great to see the cinema and restaurant complex starting to take shape. It is far more than just the skyline in Waterdale being transformed as we deliver high quality facilities and attractions across our town centre which will be a big draw for residents and visitors. “We are delivering

our Urban Centre Masterplan which in turn is delivering jobs and growth for our borough. These are exciting times for Doncaster.” Savoy Managing Director James Collington added: “ The Cultural and Civic Quarter represents a fantastic location for our sixth cinema. “We intend to deliver a state-of-the-art facility,

which when combined with the new restaurants and the CAST theatre will be transformative for the town centre, providing a much needed leisure focus.” The project has benefitted from £635,000 from the Sheffield City Region Local Growth Funding (LGF) and once complete will create more than 100 jobs and bring new business rate income into the borough. Dan Jarvis, Mayor of the Sheffield City Region, said:“It’s great to see that the Local

Growth Funding (LGF), distributed through the Sheffield City Region, is transforming Doncaster town centre. By investing in projects such as the new cinema development we will create jobs, attract investment and drive economic growth for the region. “Doncaster has set out an ambitious but deliverable masterplan, and I’m glad to be working with the Council to help drive that plan forward.” The area around the

Civic Square has been transformed into a destination area in recent years, with the £20 million investment in the Civic Office, £22 million investment in the CAST performance venue and the £14 million investment in the new central Library and Museum, currently being constructed. By 2021 Government will have invested over £12 billion through the Local Growth Fund, allowing LEPs to use their local knowledge to get all areas of the

country firing on all cylinders. There are 38 LEPs covering the whole of England, which are investing LGF money in a wide range of projects including transport, skills, business support, broadband, innovation and flood defences. More information can be found at: www. doncaster.gov.uk/ cinema

What do you call a belt made of watches? A waist of time. Anyone want to buy a broken barometer? No pressure. I bought an Oasis GPS and now... ...all the roads I have to drive are winding. A woman is on trial for beating her husband to death with his guitar collection. The judge asks her: “First offender?” She replies: “No. First a Gibson, then a Fender.” I was in a restaurant in Paris and ordered the ‘Napoleon Chicken.’ When the dish arrived, I was surprised to find very little meat on it, and it was mainly carcass. I asked the waiter why and he said: “We only use the Boneypart.” What do you call bad breath that sneaks up on you? Ninjavitis. How does a flamenco dancer catch lots of fish. She castanets. I bought a U2 GPS and it’s garbage. The streets have no name and I still haven’t found what I’m looking for. My girlfriend just couldn’t accept my obsession with horoscopes. In the end it Taurus apart. I told my wife she’d drawn her eyebrows too low. She just scowled at me.

ISSUE 1334 04/09/2019

celebrating success on the road to recovery September is National Recovery month and will be marked in Sheffield with a series of events to celebrate the hard work that goes on behind the scenes to promote and support recovery from drugs and alcohol. This year’s theme is ‘Join the voices for recovery: Together we are stronger’ which focuses on increasing awareness and understanding of mental and substance use disorders and celebrating those who recover. In partnership with Sheffield Drug and Alcohol Coordination Team, commissioned treatment providers and Sheffield Recovery Forum, the events and activities aim to bring together individuals and their families who may be either contemplating, starting or who have been in recovery for some time. Sheffield treatment providers treat just over 3,000 people a year and in addition to the treatment offer, there is a Sheffield Recovery Community to offer support to help them continue on their journey. Sheffield has a thriving recovery community with over 37 mutual aid/ support groups that operate 7 days a week. These are mainly peer led, and support anyone wherever they are on their recovery journey so Sheffield is well-placed to support them as well as their families and friends. In 2014 there were 64 people volunteering and giving back, totalling over 17, 550 volunteer hours a year. In 2017 this increased to 83 people volunteering and giving back,

totalling 24,060 volunteer hours. The full calendar of events includes weekly recovery walks, chill and chat sessions, pool and table tennis competitions at Cathedral Archer Project and a BBQ at Addaction. The activities will be rounded off with Sheffield Town Hall hosting a celebration event on Thursday 26 September, taking a look back at the month and celebrating all of the hard work that often goes on behind the scenes. Stuart Whaley is one person who is thankful for the services that helped him on the road to recovery. He is now one of the volunteers who works on National Recovery Month. Stuart said: “A big part of my recovery is about giving back, in return for all the support I have received from Sheffield treatment services and the recovery community. I strongly believe that without people in recovery helping others on the same journey, that there would be no recovery. We are lucky to have such an amazing recovery community in Sheffield and I for one am very grateful for all the support.” Sheffield also manages the Recovery Ambassador Scheme, originally developed in 2009 by Sheffield DACT, and now managed by Sheffield Health and Social Care NHS Foundation Trust (SHSC). It provides opportunities for people in recovery to access 6 months training followed by a volunteering placement with projects that support people with substance misuse problems.

Some of these projects include working with The Cathedral Archer Project, Fitzwilliam and Addaction. Since 2009, over 25 of these volunteers have gone onto full-time employment working in the addiction field, whilst others have pursued other careers or further education. Councillor George Lindars-Hammond, Cabinet Member for Health and Social Care at Sheffield City Council, said: “Recovery from addiction takes time, patience and support and we’re glad to see this supportive recovery community working so hard to help people get free from drugs and alcohol. There is a lot of support in the city for people experiencing drug and alcohol issues and we want them to know that if they or someone they know needs help to make sure that they get in touch. All services in Sheffield take self-referrals and are open access, meaning people can walk in and be seen that day. The celebration events will offer time out for people to enjoy a mix of activities and will be very informative. We look forward to a busy month focusing on recovery and know how important it is to celebrate it in this way.” Details of the month’s events are on the Sheffield Drug and Alcohol Coordination team’s (DACT) website www. sheffielddact.org.uk and the Sheffield Recovery Community Facebook page. More information is also available by calling 0114 2736851.

More people responded to Sheffield’s Clean Air Zone consultation than they did in both Leeds and Birmingham when those cities held similar conversations about how to slash levels of nitrogen dioxide in the air. In total, 11,875 people responded to Sheffield’s Clean Air Zone proposals, with several hundred coming from local businesses. More than 2,300 responses came from private hire and taxi owners. In contrast, Leeds received 8,744 responses and Birmingham 10,389. Councillor Bob Johnson, Cabinet Member for Transport and Development at Sheffield City Council, pictured above, said: “We’d like to thank the people of Sheffield for responding in such big numbers. We’ve had over three times as many responses as any other recent consultation and to get more responses than other big cities shows just how passionately people feel about this issue. The clean air conversation will go on and we urge anyone who may be affected to get in touch with us. From talking

to the people of Sheffield over the last two months, the message is clear – air pollution is a big issue and people want clean air. However we have to ensure that food can still be delivered, that buses still run and children can get on a coach for a school trip. Our focus for next year, if we get the money we’ve asked for from government, will be to help the owners of these vehicles upgrade to the cleanest available before 2021” The Clean Air Zone plans, established after the government ordered major cities across the UK to improve air quality, encourages the most polluting vehicles to upgrade to electric, hybrid or cleaner engines. It is set to be launched in 2021. Sheffield City Council is seeking £50m of government support to help drivers upgrade their vehicles and the council wants to work with taxi and van drivers, as well as every other fleet of vehicle affected, to encourage this. The oldest and most polluting taxis, buses, vans, coaches and Heavy Goods Vehicles (HGVs) will be affected by the pollution charge, with private cars currently exempt. Under plans now being put forward, there will be a pollution charge for driving into Sheffield’s proposed Clean Air Zone. The proposals are aimed at 20 per cent of the vehicles in the city but cause 50 per cent of the harmful nitrogen dioxide emissions. The consultation report will now be used to shape final plans, which will include the offers of support for local business people who will be affected by the clean air charging zone. If approved by cabinet, the plans will go to central government’s Joint Air Quality Unit (JAQU) to ask for funds to provide this support.

Are you involved in a local charity or organisation in need of funds? Charities and community groups from across England are being encouraged to apply for a share of a massive £3million to bring their dream project to life thanks to support from players of People’s Postcode Lottery. Launched Monday, 2nd Sept the Dream Fund encourages collaboration between charities and good causes by bringing them together to apply for funding for their dream project. This year’s prize fund is the largest ever, with a top award of £1.5 million. Funding from the scheme will be offered over three years from 2020. The Dream Fund has invested more than £12 million in 29 projects across Britain. Postcode Dream Trust is encouraging applications to Dream Fund 2020 from projects which seek to achieve systemic change by addressing an important social or environmental problem through innovation and collaboration. Laura Chow, Head of Charities at People’s Postcode Lottery, said: “This announcement marks the start of an exciting process which will see £3 million raised by our players awarded to truly inspirational projects. The Dream Fund has made a remarkable difference to so many projects over the last nine years, and I have no doubt that we’ll see many more bold and courageous ideas submitted this year. Good luck to all the applicants.” Applications for the Dream Fund can be made until Tuesday, 15 October. Winners will be announced in March 2020. Please visit www.postcodedreamtrust.org.uk

Wedding Guide WEDDING CATERING: EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW

2. The Cost of Children/ Supplier Meals Kids meals are half the size of adults’ meals and the suppliers are generally happy to eat buffet-style in the kitchen. Both should be about half the price of the usual, so make sure that is outlined in the contract before you sign on the dotted line. 3. Hire Costs Make sure the hire costs are explained in the contract separately. This is for things like tables, linens, cutlery, plates etc if this is something your caterer is providing. It’s usually outlined as a per person cost so just check you’re happy with this cost.

When it comes to wedding catering, there will be things you just need to confirm in writing to avoid any confusion or issues or nasty surprises later on. 1. Special Meal Choices You need to have confirmed in writing with your caterers how many special meal choices there are and what they are. This is for guests with specific dietary requirements like they’re allergic to nuts or vegan for example. We don’t need to tell you why it is so important to have this confirmed in writing with your caterers.

4. Wedding Day Timeline You need to ensure a full list of the day’s activities are outlined in the contract. If not a full day, then at least when the caterers need to be ready to go, when to bring certain elements of the food, serve drinks, start clearing up etc. It might be worth outlining a late charge or partial refund if they are way off the timings if at all possible.

5. Staff Numbers Make sure you get an exact number of how many members of staff will be there on the day and make sure you’re happy with that number! You want enough staff to cater on the day for all of your guests, and you want them to have a backup plan for when staff members are sick on the day so get that in writing too!

6. All Additional Fees Get every single little fee written down like what happens if you extend staff hours on the day, if there’s a corkage fee for alcohol, charges for broken equipment etc. Get it all written down so they can’t hit you with a big scary and unpredicted figure after the day adding to postwedding stress.

MONEY SAVING HACKS

Want to save a bit of cash in this element of your wedding? We have three really handy tips to follow. • Stick to the menus provided: making changes and custom menus will be very pricy. Stick to the menus the caterers provide and this should cut down added costs. • Try to stick to the game plan: don’t run over on time or ask caterers to come earlier than when they have told you they will come. You will incur charges and they may be ridiculously high! If you’re nervous about doing this or you need to do this, again make sure the additional cost is outlined in the contract. • Keep guest numbers down: as with every element of your wedding, you will save a tonne of money if you simply have less guests. You will most likely be charged on a head count for your catering so just keep guest numbers low and this will immediately cut costs. Try having evening guests and day guests if you’re struggling!

The Master Singers

SATURDAY 14TH SEPT 2019 Show at 7:30pm

The Choir feature regularly at the Paramount in the Rotary Club’s Christmas Concert. This evening provides the opportunity for the Choir to showcase more of their extensive repertoire. Songs from stage musicals to spirituals, from traditional items to imaginative arrangements of popular music are sure to delight the audience. The Mastersingers were formed primarily as a recording and backing ensemble of male voices some 30 years ago under the direction of Alan Simmons. They have evolved into their present format of four female and eight male voices, the unique voicing – SATTBB. The group’s repertoire ranges from medieval French carols through to clever arrangements of current pop songs and they are never frightened to explore new work – which lately has included some of the beautiful music of Eric Whitacre, and, most recently, music from Australia courtesy of the wonderful Ruth McCall. Audiences are always delighted with the ‘surprises’ on offer!

CLUBLAND CELEBRATES A LEGEND A former Star of the Clubland, who went on to score Top Ten hit in the sixties with chart-topping group the Fortunes, will be remembered this month as current leading acts join up in a concert to be held in his memory. Glen Dale’s two sons (known on stage as Dave Mae & Lee Jon) will be joined by the Garderobes and Steph King among others, at Woodouse West End WMC on Friday 27th September. The boys will be belting out some of their dad’s biggest hits – including

“You’ve got your troubles” & “Here it comes again” – with all proceeds from the evening’s event being donated to Ashgate Hospice. David, who is joined by sister Jane in helping to organize the evening, explained: “The hospice were wonderful with dad at such a difficult time, and we thought that it would be great to use his name to raise awareness of the wonderful work they do, whilst at the same time hopefully raising quite a bit of money to help them” All the acts currently

appearing have already offered their services for free; the boys are keen to hear from any other acts who worked with Glen, whether they wish to perform in his honour or simply turn up on the night and say a few words about Glen. Although born in Kent, Glen moved to Sheffield after meeting his first wife, Janice, at a gig at the Bluebell in Hackenthorpe. After a spell living in Tenerife with his second wife, Eleanor, he returned to Eckington for thr remainder of his life.

CAN YOU HELP? For many years the boys have been searching for the missing gold disc awarded for sales of their biggest hit – “You’ve got your troubles” – and they hoping that one day someone will be in touch to say they have it!

Meanwhile tickets are now on sale for the Glen Dale Memorial Night. Priced at £5 they are on sale in the club in advance or on the night, or by calling David on 07966 453130

ANGLER’S CORNER

with Clint Walker

Recently, I’ve returned to a venue where the last time I went, I scored a big, fat blank in search of catfish… If I’m honest, I probably didn’t plan it too well last time, leaving myself seriously under gunned and ill prepared to deal with such powerful fish, so this time I visited the armoury to draw the heavy weaponry! The weather wasn’t really conducive to hunting catfish with bright sunlight and warm temperatures, but I only had one day free, so that was that. I paid for my day ticket, and quickly made my way to the same peg I’d fished previously, aware that I’d seen plenty of cruising fish in the area and parked the barrow before watching the water… nothing; not a fish to be seen aside from a few dimpling roach! I set up my chair in the shade, hoping for some cover from a blisteringly hot sun and folded together my XL cradle before dropping another unhooking mat on top to protect the potential capture. The scales

were laid out, a bucket of water filled, and I set about tackling up. I’d swapped my size 4 hooks for some much stronger 4/0 circle hooks, reasoning that although I thought I’d had a pick up during the last visit, the bait had been too big to allow the hook to gain any purchase. Heavy mono provided the hook link on one rod, and on the other Finskin, a coated braid from the Spotted Fin stable. I’d failed with an all out boilie/pellet approach, so I packed one rig with large halibut pellets steeped in salmon oil and stopped them sliding off the hair with Pink Pepper Squid wafter to add colour and variety and on the other, I’d raided the freezer for some Baitbox fish baits which had been left to defrost overnight in my cooler bag. The mackerel was split into chunks and loaded kebab style onto the hair before the dripping tempter was lobbed gently out towards the island in front. The halibut pellets followed to the other side of the island, and I slackened the reel clutch to allow any cats to take line, instead of losing my rod! Within seconds, both bobbins started moving; both lines were back leaded to prevent tangles, but the pellets were obviously of interest to the resident bream which were struggling to pick up a necklace of 20mm pellets, and the other line had been pulled up by a carp in the margins. Not the best of starts as both rigs had to be reset, but I wanted them in the right place, so recast and sat back down. By now the sun was blazing down, so I didn’t really expect and action and having sought advice from a chum, Joe Illidge, I was aware that the prime feeding time was 11am-2pm so I had a brew and read some of my book whilst the world slowly went by…bliss! An hour into the session and the pellets were picked

up. My alarm tweeted a warning and I watched the left hand bobbin rise towards the blank. A small amount of line peeled off the spool as the rod tip twitched downwards, so I lifted the rod and felt resistance at the other end! At first, I thought I had hooked a bream as the fight was so poor, but a silver tail smacking the surface indicated it was indeed a cat, but at that moment, the line went slack and the fish got away… I’m not sure whether it was hooked properly, whether I’d wound down too early, or I’d committed some other error, but at least it was progress… The pellets were rigged again, and the rod returned to the spot… At around 11am on the preceding session I’d noted fish scattering as cats charged through them striking at prey fish. Today, there was nothing to denote feeding fish, but I still wound in to check the baits and replace them prior to the proposed dinner time feeding spell. Whilst I opened a tin of ‘All-Day breakfast’ for lunch, I watched an angler on the far bank put a bend in his rod as a cat beat him up before he lost it and flung his rod down in disgust, but still I had no more interest in my baits. I munched my breakfast mush and followed it with a brew whilst considering what I could do to increase the chance of a pick up. I wanted something that would put even more scent into the water, so picked out a pack of lamprey to replace the mackerel and slid it onto the hair before anchoring it with the same squid wafter. Two cats had been hooked and lost between us, but perhaps there was a chance of one more? The lamprey went out to a spot just off the island, and I put the rod back on the pod before returning to my book. Another angler arrived and set up right next door obviously looking to target the same island feature from a different angle, so rather than get involved in any debate, I kept an eye on him as he tackled up to see where he was going to put his rigs and poured another cup of tea. As I did, my alarm warbled and I looked up to see the spool paying out line steadily as a fish picked up the bait and moved away… I always thing there is something faintly

ominous about a take from a big, unknown fish (in my mind, I still see the reel clicking scene in ‘Jaws’) which always brings a rush of adrenaline so I was quickly over to the rod to connect with the hoped for cat! It was a cat, and it took almost sixty yards of line off me on its first run as I hung on to try and prevent it throwing the barbless hook. Eventually it slowed, but the process of regaining line was tricky as the cat spun over the line, constantly slapping the shallow water with a long, silver tail as I struggled to gain a foothold; if it went further, there was a real danger of it going all the way around the island! I managed to hold the fish and it kited off to the right, coming back towards me in a mighty arc as I tried to get some line back. It thumped away angrily at the other end but within a few minutes, I had regained a few yards before it charged off again, thankfully into open water. Eventually tired, the cat rolled on the surface; I still had to recover around fifty yards of line as my rod strained against the dead weight, but I was slowly gaining ground until a third powerful run put me right back to square one! Finally, the fish surrendered and rolled over the threshold of the net; it wasn’t a huge fish, but as my first from the venue, I was very pleased and gently lowered it onto the mat for unhooking. The circle hook was easily removed from the scissors and it went into the sling where it took the scales around to 31lb which I was happy with. A quick stop for a photograph, and the cat was slipped back into the depths to fight another day where it sank away sullenly. The change to a bloody stinking bait had worked, the lamprey had been snapped up fairly quickly resulting in the only fish landed during the day and I packed up to return home. Advice from my friend Joe had helped greatly, I’m not too humble to admit that he knows more than I about cat fish, but I’m learning…at almost 50 years old, its great to still be able to learn something new about angling, and I’ll definitely return for another crack at cat fishing. If you haven’t tried it yet, you should, it’s brilliant fun!

LATE GOAL A ‘KILLER BLOW’ JAKE HASTIE Rotherham United boss Paul Warne gave his thoughts after the weekend’s 1-1 draw at home to Tranmere Rovers. Warne was disappointed to see his side concede an injury-time equaliser, which denied his side all three points at AESSEAL New York Stadium. “I don’t think we were at our best today,” said Warne. “Obviously, we’ve got massive issues with the goal. That aside, we were poor, for us. It’s a disappointment. I’m not making excuses but I don’t know if we had a bit of a hangover from Wednesday night –

not so much after the lord mayor’s show, but we weren’t at our fluent best. “It didn’t help with Kyle (Vassell) going off after five minutes. We put Chieo on who’s only been at the club two days. But I thought our second half performance was much better. We created enough chances to win the game. “I understand and think this is what we’ve got to get better at, teams are going to come here – rightly or wrongly – and think we’re one of the favourites to go up. Every team is a tough battle but they come here and

really slow the game down. Everything’s a free-kick, everything the ‘keeper does takes forever and every throw-in takes forever. The team, myself, the fans, everyone gets frustrated and we’re going to have to get used to that. “Our second half performance was a lot better and we probably did enough to win the game. Unfortunately to concede late on is a killer blow.” Ben Wiles grabbed his first Millers goal in the second half but it was cancelled out in disappointing fashion. An apparent offside and handball went

unnoticed, leading to Tranmere’s equaliser. “There’s no arguing this time it’s an own goal,” said Warne of Wiles’ first goal. “We’re really pleased for him (Ben Wiles). His performance was good and he’s got the man-of-the-match. “We are going to have games where we don’t play as well but win 1-0. We’d have left here today knowing we hadn’t played our best but have taken the three points. “I thought our back four were excellent today. They did everything they had to today apart from the last few seconds.”

ENNIS ENJOYING LOAN SPELL Niall Ennis has said he is settling in well at Rovers and is pleased with the welcome he has had at the club. Speaking to the media team from his parent club Wolverhampton Wanderers, Ennis talked about his loan spell with Rovers and discussed his first professional goal. “It’s been a good transition into men’s football and I’ve enjoyed it so far. It’s a good bunch of lads and staff, which has made settling in really easy. We’ve had a lot of games but that’s what we’re here for,” he said. “There is a good range of ages, senior and young players,

but it’s a good vibe around the team and you need a good dressing room to help you on and off the pitch. If you get along off the pitch, you’ll get extra percentages on the pitch and morale is good at the moment.” “The first day when we met the manager, he said that we were coming here to play and that’s what you want to hear when you join a club, you don’t want to just make up numbers. He’s given us his trust, so we need to pay it back by putting in performances.” Ennis has had a good reception from Rovers fans due to his hardwork on the pitch

but was delighted to register his first professional goal in a 2-1 win against Lincoln City. “League football is real football, fighting for proper points, everything has a meaning. Sometimes, because you know it’s under-23s, you can be off it occasionally, whereas here you’re fighting for your place in the team and always have to be on it, which really suits me. It’s physical, but we want to be play football here,” Ennis added. “It was good to get off the mark and I have confidence in myself, so hopefully it’s the first of many. The previous week I

had a chance where I was running and I hesitated when it came to the shot so this time I thought ‘I’m a striker, I need to shoot’, so I went for it and luckily enough it went in. “I think I needed this loan to mature a bit, to go away from Wolves and get some real minutes. I’m picking up little techniques on how to use my body because I’m playing against more physical, seasoned defenders who’ve played for years, some in the Premier League. I’m learning technically, mentally and tactically, and that’s what you go on loan for.”

JOINS ON LOAN Rotherham United are delighted to announce the signing of Jake Hastie on a season-long loan deal from Rangers, subject to EFL and FA ratification, plus international clearance. The 20-year-old winger makes the Deadline Day move to the AESSEAL New York Stadium, and he will link up with his new teammates ahead of Saturday’s trip to South Yorkshire rivals, Doncaster Rovers. After progressing through the youth ranks at Motherwell, the Scotland Under21 international went on to earn a

professional contract at Fir Park before spending time on loan at Airdrieonians and Alloa Athletic. He then returned to his parent club in January 2019, and he rattled in seven goals in just 15 appearances in all competitions, leading to Rangers swooping to secure his signature earlier this summer. Having also been nominated for the PFA Scotland Young Player of the Year award for the 2018/19 campaign, Hastie has plenty of potential and he will be hoping to fulfil that during his time as a Rotherham player.

LOCAL FOOTBALL with Michael Clarke

Week three of the County Senior League was by far the biggest so far, with a whopping 24 games taking place to bring August to a close. Premier Division We start our round-up at Dodworth Miners Welfare, last season’s top two Dodworth and North Gawber Colliery faced off on Saturday. North Gawber of course won the race last season, but the two could not be separated on Saturday, with the game ending 2-2. Dodworth lead the early table in which no side has an intact 100% record. Goals from Matthew Thornton and Carl Woodhead gave North Gawber a 2-1 away win over Stocksbridge Park Steels Reserves midweek. North Gawber are only point off the early pace. Stocksbridge followed their loss to North Gawber with a goalless draw with Hepworth United on Saturday. Swinton Athletic sit in second place after a 4-1 win over Ecclesfield Red Rose 1915 at Chaucer School on Saturday. Swinton have seven points from their opening three games. A brace from Lewis Owiredu helped Wakefield AFC to a 3-2 away win over AFC Penistone Church and their first victory in the County Senior League. It was a great week for Wombwell Main. They started on Wednesday with their first win of the season; a 4-2 win away at Grimethorpe LLFC. Then goals from Daniel Burkinshaw, Kieran Hirst, Ben Knox and Nicky Harper (2) gave them an enthralling 5-4 win against Burngreave FC on the weekend. It was a mixed week for Frecheville Davys. On Wednesday evening they beat High Green Villa 4-3 at home, but on the weekend they fell to a 5-1 loss away at Grimethorpe LLFC. High Green had a quieter weekend as they were held 1-1 at home by Oughtibridge WMSC. Houghton Main claimed their first win back in the Premier Division after promotion in the summer, with a 3-1 away win over Jubilee Sports. Two goals from Luke Webster gave Ecclesfield Red Rose 1915 a midweek 2-1 win over Bungreave FC at Chaucer School. Division One Goals from Luke Norbury (2) and Luke Exley gave Wombwell Town a 3-1 home win over Handsworth FC Reserves. The win makes it four wins from four for Wombwell, who lead the way in Division One. AFC Dronfield went into the weekend with three wins to their name and an 100% record, but that changed on Saturday as they were beaten at home 4-2 by Sheffield Medics. Kiveton Park had had a tough start, opening with back-to-back losses, however, they bounced back immediately this week with back-to-back wins. Firstly came a 4-2 win over Handsworth FC Reserves on Wednesday and then 3-0 win over New Bohemians on Saturday. A double from Andrew Nota helped Denaby Main to a 5-1 home win over Ardsley Athletico. Jordan Cooper, Cameron Till and Jack Bancroft were also on target for Denaby. Goals from Aaron Corley and Craig Hobson were enough to give South Kirkby Colliery a 2-0 home win over Wombwell Main Development. United Worksop and Sheffield Union shared the spoils at Manton Athletic Sports Club, as they played out a 1-1 draw. Division Two The headlines in Division Two are reserved for Lucas Stubbs, who scored an amazing eight goals on Saturday, as South Elmsall United Service were 11-1 winners over Burngreave FC Reserves. Jordan Livett scored twice along with Matthew Turner and Adam Darton to give Jubilee Sports Development a 4-2 away win over Bank End AFC. Houghton Main Reserves claimed their first win of the season at the third attempt, with a 2-1 away win against Swinton Athletic Reserves. Frecheville were 3-1 winners over Sheffield FC Reserves at Grange Park Football Ground. Goals from Lewis Wright, Cameron Widdison, Omar Boudabouza and Anthony Brady gave Thurcroft Miners Institute a 4-1 home win over Silkstone United.

BULLEN REFLECTS ON RANGERS REVERSE A dejected Lee Bullen was left perplexed by the Owls’ under par performance after QPR emerged 2-1 winners at Hillsborough. Jordan Hugill’s brace cancelled out a Steven Fletcher penalty and the caretaker manager said his side deserved little from the contest: “We were lacklustre, there was no pace, no drive and no energy and it wasn’t good

enough. I know the expectations of this football club and that performance didn’t come near it. “The frustrating thing is that we could have gone into the international break with a really good start to the season with a win today. “That would have given us 12 points from six games, which is two points a game and automatic promotion form.

“But as it stands we have nine points and what could have been a great start is now a bang average start.” The Owls suffered a blow even before kick-off when Tom Lees was forced to stand down. But Bullen refused to look for any mitigation as he explained the problem with the skipper: “Tom’s hamstring tightened up in the warm-up and there

was no sense in taking a risk because if it tears, he could be out for six weeks. “But that’s no excuse. Of course, it’s not great losing your captain and someone who is a mainstay of the team, but you can still talk to each other, you can communicate. “The defending for both goals was not good enough but then we were not good enough all over the park.”

SECOND HALF DOUBLE SCUPPERS OWLS A quickfire second half double from Jordan Hugill overturned Steven Fletcher’s penalty as Wednesday were beaten at Hillsborough by QPR. Fletcher’s opener gave the hosts a platform on which to build but try as they might, the Owls couldn’t find their rhythm and paid the price. Rangers grew into the game, particularly in the second half, and their efforts reaped the reward of a second away success. The Owls were dealt the first blow of a game to forget as

early as the warm-up when skipper Tom Lees was forced to withdraw from the contest before a ball was kicked. Barry Bannan took the armband, but Wednesday did take the mantle from the off. Adam Reach and Kadeem Harris were causing problems down the flanks, with Fernando Forestieri looking lively on his first start of the season. And the Argentine was central to the Owls taking the lead on 23 minutes when he was hauled to the ground by Grant Hall in the area and the

referee pointed to the spot. Fletcher stepped up to confidently send Joe Lumley the wrong way from 12 yards. QPR began to see plenty of the ball themselves but struggled to make any real inroads in the final third until the half-hour mark when Ryan Manning’s free kick brushed the side netting. Nahki Wells brought a fine near post save from Keiren Westwood before the break but overall the Owls were good value for their half time advantage. Westwood was called into action again

just after the break, darting off his line to save at the feet of Wells, but was beaten on the hour as Rangers levelled. Wells threaded a fine ball through the Owls defence and Hugill rounded the keeper before calmly slotting home. Then, three minutes later, the Londoners burst into the lead. Manning ran into space down the left and fed the advancing Hugill, who slotted across Westwood from close range. Wednesday introduced Massimo Luongo, Jacob Murphy and Atdhe Nuhiu from the bench

to ignite a spark going forward and the big man almost produced with nine minutes to go but there was just too much on Bannan’s cross to the back stick.

That really summed up the Owls’ afternoon, one of frustration, losing Lees from the start and their 100% home record by the end.

EVERTON CUP DATE CONFIRMED The Owls will host Premier League Everton in the third round of the Carabao Cup on Tuesday 24 September. The cup-tie with the Toffees will kick-off at 7.45pm. Wednesday progressed in the competition after defeating Rotherham 1-0 at the New York Stadium in midweek, as Atdhe Nuhiu’s injury time strike sealed the win. Everton, meanwhile, came from behind in their trip to Lincoln to win 4-2 at Sincil Bank. It will be the first meeting between the two sides since September 2007. Ticket detail will be announced in due course.

BLADES SECOND HALF FIGHTBACK SECURES POINT United produced a stunning second half display to come back from two goals down at the break to bag a deserved point against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge. Callum Robinson’s cross was turned in to his own net by Zouma with just a minute of normal time remaining to send the away end into delirium. It was no more than the Blades deserved after an impressive second half showing which saw Robinson reduce the arrears just after the break, after Chelsea raced into a 2-0 lead. Boss Wilder gave Oli McBurnie a first Premier League start for the club, making just one change to the side which last started a top flight fixture against Leicester City. David McGoldrick dropped to the bench which also included fellow striker Mousset who impressed midweek against Blackburn Rovers. Both sides enjoyed spells of possession during the opening four minutes, as the game took time to get going. The hosts upped the ante though on six minutes when a ball over the top temporarily had Tammy Abraham in behind, but the Blades quickly recovered to clear through Jack O’Connell. Soon after a cross from the Chelsea

right was met by Ross Barkley but the England midfielder failed to time his header with his attempt a long way off target. United then had the Chelsea defence under pressure for the first time as Enda Stevens’ left wing cross was deflected behind for a corner, but Ollie Norwood’s near post delivery was headed clear by Abraham. On 15 minutes Fikayo Tomori sailed a long pass in behind the United defence for Abraham to chase. Despite suspicions of offside, play went on but the striker dragged his shot comfortably wide of the far post. Three minutes later United registered an effort from distance after McBurnie won the ball back high up the pitch. Norwood then played a short pass into the feet of Luke Freeman who arrowed a shot on the turn wide of the near post. With little in terms of goalmouth action, the hosts took the lead on 19 minutes with the first meaningful effort of the game. A cross from the right was headed towards goal by Abraham, but Dean Henderson failed to collect cleanly due to the presence of Christian Pulisic, with the loose ball stabbed into the net by Abraham.

United were then forced to soak up some pressure, but had an opportunity at the other end on 25 minutes. Stevens crossed from the left with Kurt Zouma’s clearing header falling straight into the path of Chris Basham who blazed over with a shot from 20 yards. The Blades showed class in the final third just before the half hour mark as neat and patient interplay between Stevens, O’Connell and Robinson created half an opening for Freeman, whose strike towards goal on the angle was blocked. Chelsea were a whisker away from making it 2-0 on 37 minutes as Mateo Kovacic drove into the United area with a purposeful run but his low shot slipped inches past the far post. Moments later United were almost level. John Lundstram lifted a pass into the right channel which was seized upon by Basham. His early low centre looked to have caught out the Chelsea defence with Robinson the quickest to react, but his glancing diving header fell agonisingly wide. With just three minutes of the first half remaining Chelsea benefitted from a communication error as O’Connell and John

Egan both attempted to head Jorginho’s chipped pass. The loose ball was seized upon by Abraham who drove the ball home for his second, despite the best efforts of Henderson. The Blades could have conceded a third before the break as Mason Mount saw a sight of goal, but a useful deflection took the ball wide. The goal came at a time when United looked to be getting a foothold in the game, and the frustration was too much for McBurnie who was cautioned on the stroke of half-time for dissent. The United half-time chat had an immediate effect as the Blades pulled one back on 46 minutes. Stevens had the Chelsea defence on the ropes as he glided past two defenders with a break down the left, he then cut the ball back for ROBINSON who netted with a cool firsttime side-footed finish to celebrate in front of the travelling Blades supporters. United had Henderson to thank for staying just one behind as Azpilicueta’s centre was seized upon by Abraham, but the Blades’ number one produced a fine save low to his right to deny the striker, with Lundstram also putting in a fine challenge to deny any

shots from the rebound. A swift counter attack by the Blades then saw McBurnie turn the ball in behind for Robinson who drove a shot wide with his left foot. With the Blades in the ascendancy, boss Wilder replaced McBurnie with McGoldrick just past the hour mark. The Blades found plenty of the famed fluency which resulted in the ascension into the Premier League as the natives on the home terraces began to become restless. On 69 minutes a driving overlapping run from O’Connell was followed by a dangerous cross into the near post which required a vital clearance from Tomori with Robinson lurking. Soon after Norwood stung the palms of Kepa Arrizabalaga with a long-range strike as United continued to look the more likely to score. The Blades made another change with just over 10 minutes remaining, as Mousset replaced Freeman. United continued to surge forward in search of an equaliser with Mousset having an immediate impact with a driving run. After checking inside, he laid the ball to the impressive Stevens whose effort took a deflection which almost wrong-footed

Arrizabalaga. With three minutes remaining Mount went close after Henderson punched a free-kick clear to the midfielder on the edge of the area, but he drilled his effort wide. At the other end Mousset’s cut back almost brought an opportunity for sub Ben Osborn, with the ball eventually breaking to Robinson whose effort was blocked. With time ticking away though United bagged a thoroughly deserved equaliser. Brilliant work down the left by Robinson ended with a dangerous cross towards the back post, where Zouma touched the ball beyond Arrizabalaga. Blades: Henderson, Baldock, Stevens, O’Connell, Basham (Osborn 84), Lundstram, L. Freeman (Mousset 79), McBurnie (McGoldrick 63), Robinson, Egan, Norwood. Unused: Sharp, Stearman, Moore, Bešić. Chelsea: Kepa, Azpilicueta, Zouma, Tomori, Emerson, Jorginho, Kovacic (Batshuayi 83), Pulisic, Barkley (Willian 60), Mount, Abraham (Gilmour 83). Unused: Caballero, Christensen, Alonso, Giroud.

WRIGHT LOANED CALL UP FOR BEŠIC Experienced defender Jake Wright has left the Blades on a temporary basis. The 33-year-old has joined Bolton Wanderers with immediate effect and will remain at the University of Bolton Stadium until early January. Wright was unbeaten

as a Blade in the League One tittle success, before featuring 22 times in the 2017/18 campaign. In total, Wright has made 52 appearances for United, having joined on a free transfer from Oxford United in the summer of 2016.

Midfielder Mo Bešić has been called up for Bosnia and Herzegovina's Euro 2020 qualifier double header. The Everton loanee, who made his debut in the midweek Carabao Cup success against Blackburn, has been called up for the first time whilst with the Blades. Robert Prosinečki's side will host on Liechtenstein on Thursday 5th September followed by an away fixture against Armenia on Sunday 8th September. Bešić, 26, has won 40 caps for his country.

KEEPER CALL UP The 18-year-old, who was part of the senior pre-season camp in United goalkeeper Portugal, and played Marcus Dewhurst in the friendly against has been called up for the England U19 Chesterfield, has been included in the squad for the Three national squad for the Lions’ upcoming international double- games against Greece and Germany. header.
