10 DAYS. 40 WALKS. 1 AMAZING CITY Strap on your boots and take in Sheffield on foot as Sheffield Walking Festival returns 13 - 22 September 2019. Over ten days, the festival presents a host of enjoyable walks for a range of abilities, with plenty to see and discover along the way. The festival celebrates all sides of Sheffield with 40 routes of varying lengths and themes. Explore the city’s varied heritage and fascinating suburbs on urban strolls or venture out to Sheffield’s dramatic borders that overlap

with the stunning Peak District National Park for something more challenging. After a year of drought, water is the main theme this year, with walks that include all 14 of the Sheffield reservoirs included in the The Sheffield Lakeland Landscape Partnership. The festival kicks off with a section of the proposed 60-mile-long Sheffield Lakeland Way. Wisdom and Victory walks, which incorporate essences of art, self-awareness and shared discovery are new additions, alongside old favourites like the

Sheffield Round Walk and Our Cow Molly. Another feature walk commemorates the life of legendary access campaigner G.H.B. Ward, and includes a visit to an exhibition of his life, being staged at Longshaw. A lot of the of short urban strolls (most in collaboration with Heritage Open Days) are principally guided historical tours led by experts in their particular field. The pace for these is gentle, with frequent stops to look/ learn. Intermediate suburban walks usually combine

history and scenery, and though the leader may have some historical knowledge, there will be fewer stops, while medium to strenuous routes are certainly for the more seasoned walker. Road users across Doncaster may have noticed a change in surroundings when travelling around the borough. That is because lately, Doncaster Council’s Highways team have installed new non-illuminated reflective bollards where possible in an effort to reduce

maintenance and energy costs and ensure the safety of road users. An electrical inspection of the ageing illuminated bollards highlighted that a number of units were failing and beyond economic repair due to water, vandalism or accident damage. The council had to

Through the programme there has been up to 80 illuminated bollards been identified that require upgrades and throughout the rest

of the year the team have a busy period to ensure these are replaced ahead of the winter cleansing programmes. High risk areas identified that are being programmed include Leger Way and Bawtry Road and other areas will also be replaced as and where required. Based on 80 Bollard replacements scheduled for this year, Doncaster

Council will save £719 per year in energy costs as well as 97 tonnes of Co2. Over a six year life cycle including electrical testing and maintenance the potential savings could hit £8300 which can be used to replace further bollards and signs that require updating across the borough.

ALBERT SNODGRASS

My wife always yells at me for not knowing how to properly season my food, but I don’t mind. I take it with a pinch of sugar. My father saved up his whole life so he could be cremated. He urned it. For Christmas, I bought my wife new beads for her abacus. It’s the little things that count. Some of my friends have been making very hurtful remarks about my choosing to wear mittens rather than gloves... ...but I don’t like to point fingers. I told my daughter, “Its always been my dream to walk you down the aisle.” She said: “Dad, we’re grocery shopping.” My wife convinced me to wear a hideous leather jacket that she got for me. I guess I’m easily suede. I can always tell when someone is lying just by looking at them. I can tell when they’re standing too. My obese parrot died. It was a weight off my shoulder. Why does the Dalai Lama go to Vegas so often? He loves Tibet. The first rule of Passive Aggressive Club is... ...you know what? Never mind. It’s FINE.

Pairing together professionally for the first time, Strictly Come Dancing’s Gorka Marquez and Karen Hauer are sure to set temperatures soaring with their brand new Latin spectacular FIREDANCE touring the UK, beginning March 2020 and visiting Sheffield City Hall on Thursday 12th March. Expect the sequins and feather boas to make way for hot pulsing beats, seductive choreography and passionate performances that will take your breath away! With an incredible live band featuring Latin musicians and a dynamic dance ensemble performing Argentine Tango, Flamenco, Contemporary, Paso Doble, Samba and Salsa, audiences can expect an amazing show of fresh and exciting dance from two of the world’s finest. It’s time to heat things up - get ready for FIREDANCE Karen said, “I am beyond excited to be going on tour with a brand new show alongside Gorka. We have been working very hard to put on a show that will leave everyone feeling all the passion, excitement and energy that we feel when we are dancing. We can’t wait to travel around the UK and to meet you all.” Born in Venezuela and having grown up in New York from the age of 10, Karen Hauer is most known for dancing on BBC’s Strictly Come Dancing. Joining the series in 2012 she has been partnered with household names including Westlife’s Nicky Byrne, The ‘Hairy Biker’ Dave Myers, Mark Wright, Jeremy Vine, Will Young, and Sunday Brunch chef Simon Rimmer. In 2018 Karen reached the quarter-finals of the series with actor Charles Venn. Karen has an amazing presence on stage and is one of the most expressive and charismatic dancers on the current dance scene. Able to express emotion

through each and every movement right through to her fingertips, Karen takes choreographed routines to new heights and she has that rare talent to attract the eye of every audience member whenever she dances. Gorka said, “I can’t wait to get out on the road with Karen for this very exciting new tour. We are both really passionate about Latin dance, and this tour will really showcase that. We’ve worked really hard on the numbers in this show and I think everyone is going to love it. See you in 2020!” Gorka’s flair for dancing started from a very young age. Originally from Bilbao, Spain, aged 11 he attended Ballroom and Latin dance classes where he quickly excelled and became one of the top dancers representing Spain across the world. Most famously known for his appearance on BBC’s Strictly Come Dancing, Gorka Marquez has continuously displayed outstanding talent and charisma in the 2016, 2017 and 2018 series. His debut saw him paired with EastEnders star Tameka Empson. In 2018 he was partnered with TV star Katie Piper after having waltzed Alexandra Burke to the final the previous year.

council helps raise awareness of fasd As part of International Foetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) awareness day, Sheffield City Council is highlighting the effects of drinking alcohol whilst pregnant. Lindsey, grandmother to Nathaniel who was born with FASD, spoke to us about the effects of mother’s drinking alcohol whilst pregnant. Lindsey said: “I started to notice Nathaniel acting differently by the time he went to school, he would be withdrawn, he would have extreme emotional reactions to situations, he would lose control of what he was doing, and in some instances he reverted back to being incontinent. Nathaniel is a beautiful, warm-hearted young boy who struggled to express his emotions. Due to fear and unease, incontinence was a way for Nathaniel to express his distress; I would have to leave work and pick him up, which resulted in him feeling much safer. The school were fantastic with him; he was referred to CAMHS where we went through a long process of elimination trying to determine Nathaniel’s diagnosis. I had always had a feeling it wasn’t ADHD and he wasn’t on the Autistic spectrum, but we had to make sure we covered all areas. By chance, someone who had worked alongside Nathaniel had suggested I read about FASD. I spent the evening researching and immediately knew this was what had

affected Nathaniel. This was extremely distressing as I came to the realisation that my lovely grandson had been born with a brain injury, one that required a lifetime adjustment.” FASD is not always identifiable in babies as they don’t always show physical markers, this can result in misdiagnosis. In Nathaniel’s case, there were physical markers but this was not picked up by healthcare professionals at the time as FASD was not so widely known. Lindsey added: “Nathaniel was born with a suspected heart murmur; there was a difference in his facial features which I am now able to recognise. During my daughter’s pregnancy, she never confessed to drinking as much as she did, she was presentable and she always attended her appointments sober. Life now can be extremely difficult for Nathaniel, he has to have routine, he has short-term memory loss and he has very little empathy. I make sure I am patient with him, that he has support and that I also have a lot of support, I am very lucky to have the support that I do have. My family are brilliant and so is the school that Nathaniel attends. It is hard when people assume he is misbehaving, he is not doing this intentionally and his incorrect choices are not done wilfully; he doesn’t have the ability to make correct choices all the time. This is the sad part of FASD, while he does listen to me, he is just unable to

access certain parts of his brain that other people can do so easily. My message to expectant mothers is this – FASD is totally preventable if people don’t drink. You don’t have to be an alcoholic, you don’t have to binge drink, one drink whilst cooking your meal at home can have a lifetime effect on your baby. If you drink when you’re pregnant, your baby is drinking too.” Councillor Jackie Drayton, Cabinet Member for Children, Young People and Families and Baby Safe Champion at Sheffield City Council, said: “We know that drinking alcohol whilst pregnant can have a major impact on the health of your baby, and Lindsey and Nathaniel’s powerful story helps us all to understand the real impact this has had on their lives. As a baby safe champion for Sheffield, my message to all expectant mums is please don’t drink whilst you’re pregnant. Keep you and your baby healthy to give you both the best possible start in your new lives together.” There is no safe level of alcohol consumption during pregnancy. If you or anyone you know needs help or support about this issue, call Sheffield Treatment and Recovery Team (START) on 0114 305 0500 for free, confidential support. For more information on how to keep you baby safe, please visit www.sheffield.gov.uk/babysafe

SATURDAY 14TH SEPT 2019 Show at 7:30pm

The Choir feature regularly at the Paramount in the Rotary Club’s Christmas Concert. This evening provides the opportunity for the Choir to showcase more of their extensive repertoire. Songs from stage musicals to spirituals, from traditional items to imaginative arrangements of popular music are sure to delight the audience. The Mastersingers were formed primarily as a recording and backing ensemble of male voices some 30 years ago under the direction of Alan Simmons. They have evolved into their present format of four female and eight male voices, the unique voicing – SATTBB. The group’s repertoire ranges from medieval French carols through to clever arrangements of current pop songs and they are never frightened to explore new work – which lately has included some of the beautiful music of Eric Whitacre, and, most recently, music from Australia courtesy of the wonderful Ruth McCall. Audiences are always delighted with the ‘surprises’ on offer!

ANGLER’S CORNER

with Clint Walker

I’ve not wanted to get out on the bank as much as usual, but this week I was determined to go fishing, even if only for a few hours, so took advantage of an ‘end of season’ ticket concession to join a new club. I had visited the water previously, but only to film a ‘where to fish’ video for Angler’s Mail magazine, so was looking forward to actually wetting a line to find out what had changed since my last view of the lake… It’s a picturesque water, nestled high up on the moors and surrounded by peaceful farmland. As I opened the lock on the gate, I spied another car already in the car park, so after parking alongside, I wandered up the bank to find out the latest details from an angler already fishing to see if I could get some idea

of how to approach the water. My advisor was float fishing, struggling to keep the black tip of his float in one place against a gusting wind, but as I watched, he missed his first bite before informing me that he hadn’t yet caught, although his brother had landed a single carp thus far. We chatted amiably for a few minutes, he gave me some pointers and I wandered off to circumnavigate the pool before deciding upon a likely spot. Sited so high up, the water was chopped by a blustery breeze which was pushing towards the other end of the venue but despite spending some time watching the water, I hadn’t seen any indication of feeding fish. As a result, I opted for a sheltered peg looking out over a good expanse of open water, yet still within range of a central island feature. I was intent on nothing more than an exploratory visit, so tackled up a method feeder, added a small wafter bait, loaded the feeder and fired it out; nothing complicated, but I was relying on good quality Spotted Fin bait to give me an edge! As the ‘tip settled into a slight curve, I catapulted out a couple of pouches of pellets over the top which I hoped would get fish grubbing about, then sat back to open my flask. As I relaxed with a mug of sweetened tea, I looked around me and noted lapwings in the fields, dragonflies buzzing over the sedges and a kestrel quivering on thermals as it

hunted for prey… the silence was absolute, the wind warm and the sun shone down brightly as I enjoyed my brew; perfect! I kept an eye on the other anglers, watching as my guide landed a small carp, his first of the day, and deployed his keepnet to safeguard his capture. As I observed, my rod tip flew around and I also lifted into my first carp of the day which promptly fell off within a few seconds! Never mind, at least my tea was still warm… Over the course of the next hour, I struggled to connect with any bigger specimens, the rod tip trembled constantly as fish rattled the feeder but I didn’t register a proper bite, so I deduced that the wafter (or hook) was perhaps too big and required a change. My size 10 was replaced with a size 18 tied to 5lb line, a tiny pellet of meat punched out and hair rigged, the feeder reloaded with Spotted Fin Method Ready pellets (so easy to use!) and it was hurled back out to the baited patch to see if it worked. My compatriots still hadn’t really caught much, but I didn’t know if the fish weren’t feeding, or we just hadn’t got it right between us so the wait began again… Ten minutes passed, and I hooked a second carp, a feisty scrapper of around 5lb which eventually gave up and slipped into the waiting net. I was fishing fairly light tackle to keep things fun, so had to be careful to tire the fish in open water before drawing it back to the weed lined margins, but at least I was off the mark! A second carp followed ten minutes later, as did a third fifteen minutes after that; the hook and bait change seemed to have worked, and for the next two hours, I netted a carp roughly every

ten minutes as other anglers looked on forlornly… they still weren’t catching much. I continued to fire pellets out over the top, two small pouches after each fish and the bites just kept coming. I dropped a couple of fish which sent the swim quiet, then hooked a larger carp which gave the run around for a few minutes before it approached the net. As I pulled the rod tip higher to allow me to land the fish, the hook slipped out and a feeder full of pellets rocketed back towards my head at considerable speed! Fortunately, my spider senses were tingling, and as I watched the feeder shoot back at the point between my eyes, I blocked it with an outstretched palm… those childhood hours watching Karate Kid hadn’t been wasted! Wax on, wax off! With bait still attached, the missile weighed a good couple of ounces and smacked into the base of my thumb with a sickening thud. Thankfully, the hook didn’t go into my hand, but the feeder left a bright red weal which quickly developed into an even darker bruise… I was very lucky! Injury notwithstanding, I finished my short visit with around fifteen carp, all between three and five pounds which had given a good account on light tackle. I had been blessed with peace and tranquillity for a few hours, admired and enjoyed the resident birdlife, and it hadn’t rained! I think I’ve got a bit of mojo back after a blip, so I’m looking forward to getting out on the club waters again. I know they have a stretch of river with some tremendous grayling, trout and chub, so I think I’ll try that next! Tight lines…

FREDDIE HOPING FOR BOUNCE BACK WE NEED TO BE Rotherham United forward Freddie Ladapo believes it will be difficult to prepare for this weekend’s fixture against a new-look Bolton Wanderers side, but is desperate to bounce back from derby day defeat with a win over the Trotters. The former Plymouth Argyle hitman admits that he is pleased to have seen Saturday’s opponents overcome their recent troubles, but is keen to put their welfare aside as the Millers look to secure their first home league win of the 2019/20

campaign. “You can’t prepare for it easily, that is for sure,” Ladapo told www.themillers. co.uk. “Whatever it was before, it clearly won’t be the same now. “They’ve had their problems and it’s good for them to overcome them because you don’t want to see that happen to any other club, but we just need to be focused and whatever team they put out, we’re ready and prepared to beat.” Ladapo is hoping there is more than

just one ‘first’ in the form of a home win this weekend, as he continued to explain that he is looking to net his first goal at AESSEAL New York Stadium in front of the home faithful. “I still need my first home goal as well. These are things I look at personally that are very important to me and it helps the team as well,” he added. “We need those points on the board because we want to be as high as possible at the end of the season.” The Millers striker concluded by

admitting that whilst he recognises that Bolton are likely to be followed by a buoyant support to South Yorkshire, he is hoping that the home crowd can respond with equally high levels of noise at Saturday’s Sky Bet League One clash. “You see it when there is a big crowd in both the home and the away end, the games tend to have a higher tempo. “Everyone is that much louder and the cheers are that much bigger for everything that happens.”

BEN’S BELIEF FOR PENALTY Captain Ben Whiteman felt the outcome of his late penalty was never in doubt as he stepped up to give Rovers three points in in the South Yorkshire derby win over Rotherham United. The 23-year-old, who took the captain’s armband this season, kept his cool to send Lewis Price the wrong way from 12 yards. He said: “I’ll always back myself, that’s

why I step up and take them, I’m enjoying it a lot and it’s a privilege to wear the armband. I’m enjoying leading the side and I’m learning all the time, I try and lead from the front and hopefully the lads follow. “All I was thinking about was just sticking the ball away, I’ve been in similar situations from the spot before and I was confident that I was always going to score.

“It’s an amazing feeling scoring a goal, but to do it in a derby such as this one definitely makes it all the more special.” Whiteman’s 88thminute spot-kick completed the turnaround for Rovers who trailed at the break, and the skipper was quick to heap praise on the substitutes that changed the game after the interval. He added: “IThe subs that came on did

very well and had an impact, much like they did on Tuesday night, I think Rotherham became more tired as the game went on and that allowed us to move the ball well. “We were a lot more composed after the break, we managed to get the ball down and into good areas and managed to limit their chances, and in the end fully deserved the three points.”

BRAVER AND STRONGER - WARNE Rotherham United boss Paul Warne says his side need to be ‘mentally stronger’ after the 2-1 defeat in the South Yorkshire derby at Doncaster Rovers. Warne’s men let slip a one goal lead after a debut strike from Jake Hastie, but a James Coppinger leveller was added to by a late Ben Whiteman penalty to give maximum points to the hosts. After the game Warne said: “I thought their subs made them better. The impetus swapped at 60 minutes. “We started the second half well, then they got their tails up and the game got stretched. We didn’t do what we were doing in the first half, we needed to slow the game down a bit but we didn’t. “We didn’t get control of it second half,

they had a 15 minute period when they were definitely on top. We couldn’t get out so the game completely swung. Even then you have to ride a bit of a storm anyway. I thought the penalty was very harsh, I think possibly a draw would have been a fair result for both terms. We didn’t get the second goal when we were in the ascendancy and one goal is never enough. We didn’t take it and it has come back to bite us. “I think we have to be mentally tougher. I’m not sure how you do that, I’m not going to turn up with boxing gloves on or anything like that. Confidence is key in sport, especially in football, and that goal gave them the confidence to nick it at the end and it knocked the wind out of our sails.”

Now Showing Come and Enjoy All The Footy on HDTV GOOD LUCK TO THE MILLERS!!! MOORE: MOMENTUM KEY IN ROTHERHAM WIN Darren Moore felt his side’s secondhalf momentum was key as they came from behind against Rotherham United to claim local bragging

rights in the South Yorkshire derby. Jake Hastie fired the Millers ahead, but James Coppinger’s cool volley just after the hour mark drew Rovers level and Ben Whiteman sealed all three points with an 88th-minute penalty. Moore said: “It was another tough game and a typical local derby. Rotherham set

their stall out early to nullify us and male it difficult. They got that all important goal and what was important for us at that point ws that we didn’t go another goal behind. “I said at half time, we’ve got to find ways to get back into the game. They kept at it and when the chance that we had fell to James Coppinger,

he was calm in that situation. Once we scored the equaliser the momentum in the ground went in our favour and it gave the players that lift to keep pressing and showing what we’re about.” Moore reserved extra praise for the three substitutes who helped change the game in the second half, particularly

Niall Ennis who had a hand in both Rovers’ goals as he created the leveller then was pulled back for the decisive spot-kick. He said: “It’s a squad effort and I thought all three of the substitutes - Niall, Matty Blair and Kieran Sadlier came off the bench and made a difference. “I really thought Niall gave us good direction

and impetus. He’s a lovely dribbler and runner with the ball and he’s got good upper body strength. I thought he put their two centre-backs on the back foot with his energy in and around the box. He might have scored himself, but he’s had an impact and played a big part in us coming back and getting the win.”

LOCAL FOOTBALL with Michael Clarke

It was once again a busy week in the County Senior League, with 25 games taking place across the week. Premier Division Last years’ runner’s up Dodworth Miners Welfare came into the top of the table, however a difficult week they have fallen to sixth place. On Wednesday night the suffered a heavy 5-1 defeat away against Grimethorpe LLFC. They were then held to a goalless draw at home against High Green Villa on Saturday. Defending champions North Gawber Colliery are the new leaders after recording back-to-back wins this week. Goals from Chris Mackie and Liam Marsden scored the goals midweek to give them a 2-1 home win over Jubilee Sports. On Saturday they beat Burngreave FC 3-1 at the Firvale Academy. Wombwell Main moved into second place with wins this week. Kieran Hirst scored a hat-trick to help them to an impressive 5-1 away win over Houghton Main. They won again away on Saturday, this time 2-1 against Oughtibridge WMSC. Goals Samuel Green, Enzo Guarini and Curtis Wilkinson gave Swinton Athletic a 3-0 win over Wakefield AFC. Swinton are the only undefeated team left in the Premier Division and sit in third place. Wakefield bounced back immediately on Saturday with a 4-1 home win over Frecheville Davys. Midweek Frecheville were beaten narrowly 1-0 by fifth placed AFC Penistone Church. A single goal from Innocent Enos Huly gave Jubilee Sports a 1-0 over fourth placed Hepworth United on Saturday to record their first win of the season. It was a mixed week for Ecclesfield Red Rose 1915. They started the week in style, with a 4-1 away win over Oughtibridge WMSC,but were beaten 3-2 at home by Houghton Main on Saturday. Division One There were just five games on Division One this week. Two more wins for AFC Dronfield this week gives them the lead. Two goals from Jordan Lumley inspired Dronfield to a midweek 3-1 against Sheffield Union. They were then 4-3 winners against Handsworth FC Reserves on Saturday. Two goals each from Matt Cork and Christopher Field helped Sheffield Medics to a 5-0 win over New Bohemians at the Hillsborough Arena. The Medics could not build on the win at home on Saturday, as they lost 3-2 against Wombwell Main Development. New Bohemians, however bounced back quickly with a 4-2 home win against South Kirkby Colliery. Division Two It was a story of goals in Division Two, with 34 goals in the seven games that took place this week. League leaders Sheffield FC Reserves scored seven of those goals on Wednesday, as they beat Silkstone United 7-0 at Grange Park Football Ground. They scored another three on Saturday, as they beat Houghton Main Reserves 3-2. There are two teams with a 100% record in Division Two. South Elmsall United Services are in second place, after their third win of the season, a 3-0 home victory over Jubilee Sports. Just below them on goal difference on are Kinsley Boys, who recorded a 4-0 win over Burngreave FC Reserves on Saturday. Burngreave previously drew 4-4 with Jubilee Sports Development at the Jubilee Sports Ground on Wednesday evening. Swinton Athletic Reserves moved into fourth place with 3-0 home win over Frecheville on the weekend. Goals from Bailey Holroyd (2), Bradley Hutchinson and Frank Pasika gave Athersley Recreation Reserves a 4-0 win over Silkstone United, and their first win of the season.

EXCITED BY THE CHALLENGE AHEAD Garry Monk says he is excited to take the reins at Hillsborough after being confirmed as the Owls’ new boss on Friday afternoon. The former Wednesday loanee met his players for the first time on Friday and is itching to get started on the training ground ahead of his first game in charge against Huddersfield on Sunday week. Monk told swfc. co.uk: “It’s a great opportunity and one that I’m very excited about.

“To be part of the history of any big club is an honour. I want to come here and get started on what we feel is a capable squad and take it forward. “We’re in a healthy position and there are good foundations in place, I’ve just got to add my own philosophies.” Wednesday’s next opponents are the Terriers in the Championship and Monk is counting down the days to lead the team at the John Smith’s Stadium. He added: “The exciting thing is we

have a strong squad and it’s about trying to find a way for the players to bring that quality week in, week out. “The big thing is the mentality, this league demands a strong mentality, and if we can combine that with the quality we have, then it’s a recipe to be successful. “We have the break now and that gives us just over a week to get prepared for Huddersfield next Sunday. “I can’t wait to get started, this is what I do and what I do best.”

playing career and into management. He said: “When you look back at playing careers, it can be a bit of a blur but there is always certain moments or parts that stand out more than others and that was definitely one part. “Coming in here, it was a relegation battle at the time, but what a huge club. Those are the type of memories that stick with you. “I always remember playing Gillingham on a Tuesday night at Hillsborough and I remember coming out in the warm-up and

hearing the Kop end and thinking ‘wow.’ “The noise was so loud and powerful. Those type of things impact on your mind.” Monk made 15 appearances for the Wednesday in that period and taking the experience into

Reflecting on his loan spell with the Owls during the 2002/03 season, Garry Monk has vivid memories of the power of Hillsborough. The new Owls boss has spoken fondly of his time as a player with Wednesday between December 2002 and March 2003, on loan from Southampton. It’s something that has stuck with Monk throughout his

management, he continued: “I’d always say as a manager you want to keep the Kop end quiet and now it is the opposite. “We want them loud and it’s up to players as well to get that.”

MONK TO MAKE WINNING A HABIT FOR THE OWLS FAN COLUMN BY CHRIS PLATTS

Garry Monk has been named the permanent Manager of Sheffield Wednesday following Steve Bruce’s departure in pre-season. Since Bruce’s departure, Lee Bullen led The Owls to 3 wins and 3 defeats in the league and a cup victory against Rotherham. Monk is no stranger to the Hillsborough having spent a 15-game loan spell at the club back in 2002-03. After leaving his parent club Southampton in 2004, Monk spent the remainder of his career at Swansea City as captain. Leading them from the 4th tier to the Premier League, before taking over as manager in 2014. After leading Swansea to Europe, he was dismissed in 2015. Since then he has had spells at Leeds United, Middlesbrough and Birmingham City. Leaving the latter at the end of last season following a dispute with the owners over the influence of his agent, James Featherstone, within club matters. Throughout the summer since Bruce departed many names have been put forward as favourites for the role. With Monk only being seen as an outside choice for the role right up until his appointment

on Friday afternoon. This was possibly due to allegations made by previous employers about transfer and contract deals conducted by Monk and Featherstone. However, when you look past that Monk is possibly the ideal candidate for the job. He is a highly experienced Championship manager. Having taken Leeds from mid-table chaos club to the brink of the play-offs. An unlucky spell as Boro boss, taking them to just outside the play-offs after 6 months in charge, only to be sacked, ironically, after beating Wednesday 2-1. At Birmingham he took over a side perilously close to the foot of the table. Under strict FFP guidelines and a 9-point deduction, he led The Blues to a safe mid table finish after being in play-off contention prior to the point deduction. There has been a mixed reaction from the fans to the appointment. With many believing that Danny Cowley, now new Huddersfield Town boss, should have been given the role after his success as Lincoln City manager. Bringing them from the depths of the conference to the top end of League One during his spell. Only time will tell if Chansiri has made the right decision.

BASH FOCUSED ON SAINTS 2019/20 Chris Basham is hopeful the Blades can pick up where they left off prior to the recent international break, when Southampton arrive at S2 on Saturday. United signed off the month of August with an excellent comeback to grab a deserved point at Stamford Bridge, with Basham encouraged by how the Blades have handled life in the top-flight to date. Basham commented:

“It will be a tough game but following the break it will be one for us to get our teeth into and build on the point we gained at Chelsea. “I think everyone was going into the start of the season with a feeling of we were not quite 100% sure what to expect. “I think though in all of the games so far we have shown we are capable. I think we have grown into all the games, although I do feel we need to

start games better.” The defender added: “We have had a win and a defeat at home this season but picked up a couple of good points on the road. “The next stage is important as we try and pick up our form to get as many points as possible before the next international break. “We’ll set ourselves some goals, and we’ll try hard to achieve them.”

AUGUST

Sheppeard’s cross finding him some space but his effort was blazed over. Illiman Ndiaye fired an effort straight at the goalkeeper before the hosts broke upfield at pace, George Alexander curling an effort wide of Jordan Amissah’s far post. The second half was a more open affair but the goals still didn’t come for either side. United started to get a real control on the game with 20 minutes to go and went closest of all when Reece York fired an effort from distance off the post. Ndiaye soon forced the goalkeeper into a good save after a weaving run through the middle of the park but United still

couldn’t find the breakthrough. The hammer blow came in the 82nd minute when Elliott rose highest from a Millwall corner and his effort hit Alexander who managed to turn the ball past Amissah. The Blades tried to respond but couldn’t find the equaliser they needed, Jake Young headed a Jake Kelly cross back across goal in the dying seconds but there was nobody there to turn it home.

U23S SLIP TO NARROW DEFEAT Sheffield United’s Under 23s fell to a narrow defeat against Millwall after George Alexander steered home a Tom Elliott header with under 10 minutes remaining. It harsh on a young Blades side missing several regular starters, who had put up a stellar defensive display against a strong Millwall side. The opening 20 minutes at The Den were largely quiet, Millwall saw most of the ball but the Blades defence stood firm and looked relatively untroubled. It was United who went closest when the chances did start to come, Sammy Ompreon’s neat touch from Harry
