COUNCIL PLEDGES “BIG CONVERSATION” AS PETITION PASSES THRESHOLD Sheffield City Council has today confirmed that the petition submitted last month, calling for a referendum to change the council’s governance arrangements, has reached the required number of signatures of 5% of the electorate to trigger a referendum on the issue. The Council is currently developing options following July’s Full Council meeting where a review was agreed, findings of which are due to be reported on within six months. The review will include input from a cross party group of councillors as well as stakeholders, to help inform the proposals for how a committee system

could work. As the petition has received the required number of signatures, the council has confirmed that a referendum will be held on or before the day of the next local elections, which are scheduled for 7th May 2020. Councillor Julie Dore, Leader of Sheffield City Council, said: “It’s a fantastic achievement that 5% of the electorate have signed this petition and I would like to thank the people who have signed as well as those who have organised the petition. “This is a positive opportunity to improve how the council works and gain a wide range of views from different people, groups

and partners across the city. We want as many people as possible to engage in this debate, and reach as many as possible of the remaining 95% of the people in this city, which is why, as well as looking at governance systems, we want to listen to people about how the council engages and serves the people of Sheffield regardless of which governance system is in place. “We will also be speaking with all of our partners, across the public, private and voluntary sectors, who we work with to make the right decisions, making Sheffield a great place to live, learn, work and enjoy. “We want a big conversation

about how we make the decisions that affect and improve people’s lives. Our cabinet always meets in public, we have held them in the community, on the radio and in local newspapers, to make sure that the people of Sheffield can get involved in the decisions we take. All of the Cabinet’s decisions are open to call in by the council’s Scrutiny Committees. “We always look to improve and know that we can do more, so we want to listen to people’s views about how we can best approach this.” Councillor Terry Fox, Deputy Leader of the Sheffield City Council said: “I will be leading a review which includes the options

for governance models, looking at the different benefits of the Committee System and the current Leader and Cabinet system. “I will be carrying out the wishes of Full Council agreed in early July, and I am dedicated to working with a wide range of local people and groups in doing this. “Public engagement is important to me and I am looking forward to presenting a report that takes into account the views of the wide ranging stakeholders in our city, to summarise the results of those discussions.”

I say my secret superpower is detecting Indian flatbread in any given room. My friends all say it’s naan-sense. Most people are shocked when they find out... ...how incompetent I am as an electrician. I don’t have a “dad bod.” I have a father figure.

I’ve been diagnosed with a chronic fear of giants. It’s called feefiphobia. My deaf girlfriend just told me, “We need to talk.” That’s not a good sign. I asked my wife what she wanted for her birthday..... She said: “Nothing would make me happier than a pair of diamond earrings.” So I got her nothing.

If anyone wants to come and talk about why my stuff keeps getting stolen... ..the door is always open.

The production will be skating into Sheffield at the FlyDSA Arena from the 6th – 10th November 2019. tickets are now on general sale from www. disneyonice.co.uk or www.flydsaarena.co.uk. Tickets purchased online at www.flydsaarena.co.uk and through the ticket hotline on 0114 256 5656 are priced £19.80 - £56.60 including fees. Fans will enter the magical kingdom of Arendelle from Disney’s Frozen and journey up the North Mountain with hilarious snowman Olaf and rugged mountain-man Kristoff, as they help royal sisters Anna and Elsa discover that true love conquers all. “This particular production is by far the largest Disney On Ice show we currently have touring bringing together everyone’s favourite Disney

characters from Snow White, Mickey Mouse and Minnie Mouse to Elsa and Anna,” said Producer Nicole Feld. “Our vision is for audiences everywhere to dance and sing along to their favourite Disney songs, so we’ve included 30 tunes that they know and love.” This year’s Disney On Ice production celebrates some of Disney’s most beloved characters from 14 treasured stories. Audiences will find themselves dancing out of their seats as a collection of Disney melodies like “Hakuna Matata,” “You’ve Got a Friend in Me” and “Let It Go” fills the arena.” Fans can rock out to “Turtle Rock” with Nemo, Dory, Squirt and his rambunctious turtle friends, and fall in love with a musical montage of dazzling prince and princess pairs skating to “At Last I See the Light,” “A Whole New World” and more. “This is a show, more than any other, which is truly for everybody,” said Producer Kenneth Feld. “When I sit with the audience, I see those that are grandparents, like I am, enjoying a lot of the classic Disney stories, while young kids and parents really respond to modern day favourites like Frozen.”

ISSUE 1337 25/09/2019

have you checked your premium bonds? sheffield makes There are now more than 1.6 million unclaimed Premium Bond prizes worth more than £63 million, according to the latest figures – check now to see if you’ve won some cash you didn’t know about! Since last year, the total value of unclaimed prizes has risen by almost £3 million – and there’s still five unclaimed prizes worth £100,000 each. The increase doesn’t mean that no prizes have been claimed in the past year – an unclaimed prize is defined as one that hasn’t been claimed within 18 months of being won, so more prizes now come under this definition. NS&I, which runs Premium Bonds, has also given MoneySavingExpert.com a breakdown of unclaimed prizes by value across the UK. Check our map below to see how many there are where you live. What are Premium Bonds? Premium Bonds are effectively a savings account you can put money into, where instead of savers earning interest, tax-free prizes are awarded in a monthly prize draw – meaning there’s no guarantee you’ll get any return on your money. Prizes range from £25 to a whopping £1 million. In August 2019, 3,346,095 prizes were won, with a total value of £95,642,500. It’s worth bearing in mind that the nearest thing Premium Bonds have to an interest rate is their annual prize rate, which means ‘on average’ the annual return is 1.4% – but in reality, this is just a vague benchmark and there’s no guarantee you’ll win anything at all. See our Premium Bonds guide for full info. How many prizes are unclaimed? NS&I says it contacts every winner, but sometimes prizes go unclaimed for reasons such as the letter getting lost in the post or address details not being updated. As of August 2019, NS&I says there were a total of 1,647,543 unclaimed Premium Bond prizes, worth a total of £63,062,725. An unclaimed prize is defined as one that hasn’t been claimed within 18 months of being won – so there will be other prizes won more recently that are also waiting to be claimed. How do I check if I’ve an unclaimed prize? There’s no time limit to claims, so you can go back as far as you like. If you think you might have an unclaimed prize, the best way to check depends on what

info you have about your Premium Bond account – confusingly, you’ll have been given both a Premium Bond holder’s number AND an NS&I number: If you know your Premium Bond holder’s number... you can go to the NS&I website or download its prize checker app. Enter your holder’s number and it’ll tell you if you’ve any unclaimed prizes. If you don’t know your holder’s number, but have your NS&I number... you can use that number – which you’ll find on any letters from NS&I – as well as your surname and password to log in to NS&I online and find your holder’s number on the ‘account details’ page. NS&I’s prize checker app also accepts your NS&I number. If you don’t know your holder’s number or account number... you can phone NS&I on 08085 007 007 or write to it and ask for a replacement bond record to be sent to you. You should give as much detail as you can, for example your full name, address details, when and where you bought your Premium Bonds and how much they’re worth. Alternatively, you can use NS&I’s tracing service or the My Lost Account website, both of which can track down your Premium Bond details. They ask you to fill out info about yourself, including your name, address, an estimate of how many Premium Bonds you hold and how long you’ve held them. How to claim your prize if you’ve won If you find you do have an unclaimed prize, you’ll need to write to NS&I to tell it at: NS&I, Glasgow, G58 1SB. Give as much information as you can, including: • Holder’s number. • Current name. • Any previous names. • Current address. • Any previous addresses where bonds may have been registered. • Signature. Prizes will then be sent to your home address as a warrant, which is like a cheque. How to claim on behalf of someone who’s died The process is slightly different if the bond holder has passed away – you’d first need to inform NS&I of the death and then follow the steps above. Any prize money will be paid to whoever inherits the bond holder’s estate.

old £1 coins - check your piggy banks!

Some 145 million old-style £1 coins still haven’t been returned to the Royal Mint, more than 18 months after they went out of circulation – here’s how to make them spendable again. Shops haven’t accepted the old round £1 coins since October 2017, but there are still millions out there which could be lurking in piggybanks or down the back of sofas. The Royal Mint says 24 million of the old coins have been returned over the past year, but as of the end of July 2019, 145 million are still out there. I’ve got an old £1 coin – what should I do? If you think you might have found a rare £1 coin which could be a collector’s item, check with a reputable dealer before you take it to the bank! If you have an old £1 coin, you should still be able to deposit it in your bank account. It’s technically up to individual banks whether they still accept

old £1 coins. But all of the major banks – including Bank of Scotland, Barclays, Clydesdale Bank, Halifax, HSBC, Lloyds, Nationwide, NatWest, RBS, Santander and Yorkshire Bank – told us they will let customers deposit the coins into their bank accounts. The Post Office has also told us it allows customers who bank with any of the following to deposit the old pound coins into their accounts at Post Office. It’s worth noting that coins are NOT like old bank notes, which can be returned to the Bank of England for their face value for an unlimited period of time after they go out of circulation. What does the Royal Mint say? A Royal Mint spokesperson said that 145 million coins is a small proportion of the overall volume, adding: “We expect returns for a number of years to come.”

THE FUTURE IS BRIGHT FOR DONCASTER UTC AS IT PREPARES FOR OPENING Doncaster UTC will be a distinctive school led by employers to provide an innovative and engaging learning environment and unique learning experience. This will equip young people with the education and qualifications required for future success and will create pathways into university or higher levels of education and to the most significant areas of growth in employment, locally, nationally and internationally.

CEO, Helen Redford-Hernandez of the Brighter Futures Learning Partnership Trust states

Current employers partners include: VolkerRail NHS Doncaster Agemaspark Polypiope Sheffield Hallam University University of Sheffield Frog Unipart Rail Pennie Stone Limited Engie Skanska AMRC (University of Sheffield) Employers have already committed a huge amount of time to developing the curriculum top ensure students at Doncaster UTC develop the employability skills employers are looking for.

CEO, Helen Redford-Hernandez of the Brighter Futures Learning Partnership Trust states: As the CEO of the Brighter Futures Learning Partnership Trust, I would like to extend a very warm welcome to the residents of our region. The Brighter Futures Learning Partnership Trust in Doncaster has been formed to focus on more meaningful collaboration between schools for the benefit of all the children and young people in our local communities. The aims and objectives of the Trust set out very clearly our determination to support and challenge our schools to provide the best possible educational experience by having a creative and aspirational curriculum and the highest quality of leadership, learning and teaching. The formation of this Trust cements the strong relationships we have already forged through the established affiliations with the Teaching School Alliance, Partners in Learning, the Doncaster Research School and the Doncaster University Technical College (DUTC). At the heart of our vision is the desire to create diverse, rich learning experiences and ensure that we use evidence-based practice and deep levels of employer-engagement to raise aspiration, tackle disadvantage and to provide a world-class education. There will be a very clear focus on academic excellence and high-quality pastoral care to ensure that our children and young people are capable, confident and compassionate learners ready to face the economic and social challenges of the 21st Century. The wealth of expertise within our schools, along with high quality governance, will also foster a strong sense of belonging and community across the Trust whilst remaining focused on each child/young person achieving their full potential. We will foster a culture where each member of staff is motivated and supported to provide high quality, innovative teaching along with opportunities for sharing their expertise. Our strong Board of Trustees and local governors are

committed to the vision and values of the Trust, and, have the highest of aspirations. Doncaster University Technical College (UTC) is central to the vision and will provide enormous opportunities to enhance the curriculum offer and give students the right skills to support regional economic growth through the development of its distinctive employer-led curriculum. It is hoped that the employer-educational partnerships will shape an innovative and pioneering curriculum model benefitting those schools in our Trust, as well as the informal educational partnerships within the wider school system. It is intended that the Brighter Futures Learning Partnership Trust will initially include four primary schools, an infant school and a high performing 11-16 secondary school, and that it will be fully operational by September 2019. The Trust will also work in strong partnership with another, successful 11-18 secondary school (Hall Cross) and Doncaster College to support the successful development of the UTC's post-16 provision. The UTC will formally join the Trust in the Spring term of 2020. The Trust will include two outstanding schools; the infant and 11-16 secondary schools are designated as Teaching and National Support schools and are recognised both locally and nationally for the work they lead on as part of Doncaster's Partners in Learning, Teaching School Alliance. Hungerhill School also benefits from a strong ITT programme in partnership with Notre Dame SCITT programme in Sheffield and recruits well from this partnership and strong links with local universities. Our new Principal will therefore have significant access to additional resources, knowledge and leadership expertise beyond those traditionally secured by other UTCs. Being part of the Trust offers a unique advantage: as part of an integrated school system, we can offer a complete range of learning experiences to children throughout their education. It also creates significant central capacity for governance, financial management and compliance, allowing school leaders to focus on the core accountabilities of

teaching and learning and the development of strong partnerships with local businesses and educational establishments. Appointed as the Headteacher of Hungerhill School in 2013, I have had a key role in setting up the new Trust and UTC and will continue to work with the appointed Principal of the UTC ensuring that the pre-opening phase continues to be successful meeting all the pre-opening conditions defined by the Baker Dearing Trust and the DfE. The Trust Project Steering Group has been established for more than two years and the structure of the Trust Governance and Schemes of Delegation reflect the diversity and different contexts of each school. Doncaster UTC, whilst being part of the Trust, will also have its own distinctive curriculum and ethos, benefitting from the already strong and established links and support from Doncaster's Business Community, local Higher Education Partnerships and the Local Authority. In partnership with the CEO, the Principal will lead on the strategic development and direction of Doncaster UTC and be responsible for the development of a 21st century curriculum with a strong STEM and digital design content. We will be working with industry partners and educationalists to deliver an exceptional learning experience. We are passionate about developing vocational and technical education to enthuse and engage young people, ensuring they have the skills, knowledge, qualifications and experience to excel at school and in their careers. We also aim to be innovative and adept at designing personalised learning experiences with the skills to work within a strong, inclusive partnership. It is our ambition that the UTC and Trust will become a flagship for other regions and form part of the Doncaster's educational transformation over the next few years. It will provide an excellent platform from which to shape cutting-edge instructional practice supported by outstanding leaders as part of the Teaching School Alliance and Doncaster's Research School. The Trust will bring you a wealth of professional development and support to ensure that both the UTC and Trust are successful.

Applications for KS5 Post 16 are now open Applications for the highly anticipated Doncaster UTC opened on the 1st September 2019, applications for KS4 have been very strong and we are looking at be oversubscribed. The UTC, which will open in September 2020 and in its first year have capacity for up to 150 students in both Y9 and Y12, is now inviting young people to begin the application process which will be available on the Doncaster UTC website from 1 September. Doncaster UTC will be a distinctive school for 13-19 year olds led by employers to provide an innovative and engaging vocational learning environment and unique learning experience. With a core curriculum based around STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) subjects, the UTC will provide an opportunity for learners to specialise in advanced engineering and creative & digital technologies. Alongside an academic curriculum, students at the UTC will benefit from a wealth of vocational opportunities driven by the involvement of some key employers from across the borough who are playing a crucial role as the UTC strives to provide a workforce for the future and ensure Doncaster’s economic sustainability in key sectors. The UTC will be based in an iconic new learning environment built in Doncaster town centre and will be equipped with industry world class equipment.

Garath Rawson, principal of Doncaster UTC, said:

Business Backing Doncaster UTC

opportunities that will be on offer. The UTC model has demonstrably improved the future employability of students and Garath is excited about the challenge of launching the new project, with the dual aims of developing a readilyemployable base of students with strong vocational skills for local employers, whilst also striving for academic excellence with placements at Oxbridge and other top universities being the ultimate goal for those pupils best suited to the challenge.

The Employer Partners have been working closely with the Trust to ensure the creation of a top class curriculum for the future pupils – and response from parents and prospective students has been overwhelming! Newly-appointed Principal Gareth Rawson has been astonished and delighted by the level of commitment and time local employer partners have already spent working with the Trust, recognising the value of bringing in vocationally-trained students to contribute to their business. The Year 9 intake for September 2020 is already oversubscribed – and applications for admission at Key Stage 5 are rapidly gaining momentum as the residents of Doncaster become aware of the fantastic

“It is an incredibly exciting time for us here at Doncaster UTC, applications are coming in fast and its been really positive speaking to parents and students who are also extremely excited about the opportunities Doncaster UTC will provide for their children. Having a UTC in the town will improve the employability of students. Key to this is the combination of vocational and academic learning that we’ll be able to offer, to bring the real world into the classroom. We’re offering a real opportunity for families and potential students who are looking for something different from their education.”

Doncaster UTC will provide an inspiring environment where young people can develop and reach their full potential. Working collaboratively with major employers, University of Sheffield, and Sheffield Hallam University, Doncaster UTC will produce the next generation of highly skilled engineers and designers to ensure that businesses can continue to thrive and grow in the 21st century. Our students will have the very best support from employers and university partners who will play a pivotal role in the development of real life problem-solving, critical thinking and learning opportunities that prepare students for the world of work.

The UTC will deliver a core curriculum based around STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) subjects, with an opportunity for learners to select units focused towards advanced engineering or digital design if they wish. In years 9-11 learners will access a range of employer projects, work experience and other activities across four defined pathways, rail, digital design, construction and infrastructure and advanced manufacturing. This will give them a good grounding in each of the industry areas and knowledge and experience of the careers and opportunities available to them. In years 12-13 students can still focus on either advanced engineering or digital design units, in addition to the core offer, and will also have an opportunity to further specialise in one of the four industry sectors if they choose. This means that all their contextual learning, work experience and other employer engagement activity including their Extended Project will focus on the particular industry, supported by the specialist cluster of relevant employers. Should a learner decide not to specialise at this stage they will continue to access projects and input across the four sectors for their final two years of learning. The UTC will be part of the Brighter Futures Learning Partnerships Multi Academy Trust (MAT). Being part of this established MAT will provide the UTC with a strong governance structure, a proven track record in school improvement, and access to wider services than a standalone school.

ALL-COMERS INVITED TO ‘COME TOGETHER’ AND CELEBRATE A BEATLES MILESTONE Local musicians return of the Shefare being invited to participate in the 50th anniversary of the arrival of one of music’s most iconic albums this Thursday (September 26th). The Sheffield Beatles Project are celebrating the release of the iconic Abbey Road with a special ‘open mic’ night at the city’s Triple Point Brewery (formerly Sentinel Brewing). The ‘Come Together’ event includes a talk by city-based Beatles historian Steve Bush

who will be discussing the band’s shows in the city – including their legendary performance at the Azena Ballroom in Gleadless. Shoreham Street’s Triple Point will also be brewing their own ‘Let It Be’ beer especially to mark the anniversary and the soundtrack to the night will be one hundred per cent Beatles. Rob Taylor from the Sheffield Beatles Project said: “We’re really keen to attract people that remember

the day Abbey Road was released in Sheffield. What did they think to it? Where did they buy it from? Did they see the Beatles perform in Sheffield? We really want to hear their story and celebrate a massive milestone in music history.” The original album was released on 26th September 1969 – 50 years to day of the anniversary event. ‘Come Together’ is free and starts at 6pm. It will be helping promote the eagerly awaited

field Beatles Project to the 02 Academy in Sheffield. The 30 piece band and orchestra made up of some of Sheffield’s finest musicians will be performing ‘Abbey Road and ‘Let It Be in full on Saturday, December 14th. Tickets for the event are just £16.50 (plus fees), available from https://www.facebook.com/thesheffieldbeatlesproject/

was still low, and streamer weed could be seen in parts as it waved beneath the surface. I’m with Clint Walker not a huge fan of fishing in too much weed, but I knew that my chosen spot was fairly Since the opening day of the season, I’m not clear, so tackled up quickly. A Kamasan Black sure I’ve been anywhere near the riverbank Cap feeder on a large bore run ring went up as a result of other commitments, so with the line first, then I attached my hook link to a a few hours spare, I’ve put it right this swivel and added a short length of anti-tangle tubing to prevent any issues in the flow before week. I do have a favourite stretch of the nicking a couple of wriggly maggots onto a River Dove, indeed I have a favourite peg, size 16 hook and packing the feeder with their so you can imagine how pleased I was to compatriots. Gently lobbed out, I waited for arrive at the venue and find that I had the whole river to myself! I parked the van and the feeder to hit the riverbed, and put a slight curve in the quivertip before sitting back to wandered the few short steps down to the enjoy my surroundings. I contemplated the water and found perfect conditions; a tinge usual cup of tea but hadn’t even had chance of colour, a little extra water, and it was to find my flask before the ‘tip quivered, and I gloomily overcast too… excellent! missed the first bite! Although there was some colour in the water, it Retrieving the rig, I noted a small amount of silkweed so cleared it and added a short feeder boom hoping to keep the mainline out of the clingy debris. A second cast saw another quick bite, and the first of a number of minnows came to hand. I hate minnows when I’m fishing the river, and realised that a feeder full of maggots was going to draw them NEW AND USED FISHING TACKLE every time, so a cage feeder replaced the Black

• Instant Bank Transfer - Cash - Draft • Cap, and I mixed up some Spotted Fin Dark Superblend, a black, low feed content mix which would add attraction but not spook fish off a light patch of groundbait; I hoped that would solve the minnow problem… It didn’t, but at least it provided a bit of variety instead of nothing but minnows… Rasping trembles indicated that there were perhaps hundreds of the pesky things in the swim and they continued to knock off my bait. I did land a couple of small chublets, a rip-roaring bite saw me attached to an angry trout and then I added a few purplish grayling to the tally; the minnows however were proving to be a proper pain! I had nothing but maggots with me, so a bigger bait wasn’t an option and after a couple of hours, I put the feeder rod back in its sleeve and pieced together a float rod… I love trotting a stick float down a steady glide. When I first started fishing as a youngster, I was absorbed by the spiralling tumble of a perch bobber downstream which supported a big juicy lobworm in search of big trout on a tiny river. I’ve never forgotten that magic, so selected a 4BB float to aid control, plumbed the midstream depth, slipped the float a couple of inches over depth, and flicked it out to twirl away from me towards a bush further down the bank. I did have to alter the shot pattern to stop it tangling, but once I got going, it was a fish almost every cast, however a good proportion were the dreaded minnows! I did start to hit dace too, more grayling and more

mini-chub, but after an hour or so, I watched an angler drop into the peg directly down from my position which spoiled my long trotting tactics… never mind, I’d caught plenty, and the river is there to be shared… Eventually, I packed up, hoisted my kit onto my shoulder and stomped off towards the van. I had plenty of maggots left, so thought I’d offer them to the oncoming angler. I’d noted a large bait on the hook as my companion had splashed the casts in, but couldn’t tell what it was, so thought I’d be nosey and go and ask. Hiding beneath a floppy hat, I was pleasantly surprised to find that the intruder was in fact a lady of advanced years (being polite about it) who was happily fishing on her own. Unfortunately, the large prawns she was using hadn’t produced any action, and for the hour or so she’d been there, she hadn’t seen a single bite, so gratefully accepted the maggots. We spent a few minutes in friendly discussion before I took my leave and I have to say that it was indeed a pleasure to find a lady angler on the banks; a rarity on the river these days methinks, perhaps we need to do more to encourage it? Over the course of about four hours, I’d netted a couple of quality grayling, half a dozen chublets, dozens of quick biting dace, a beautifully marked trout and about eleventy million minnows, so all in all, not a bad day on the bank…but is there ever really a bad day on the bank? Food for thought…

THEY MADE IT DIFFICULT FOR US - WARNE Millers manager Paul Warne reflected on his side’s display following a goalless draw at AESSEAL New York Stadium. Rotherham were held by a compact and determined Shrewsbury side, who restricted the hosts to few chances throughout the 90 minutes. “I can’t knock my team’s effort,” said Warne. “Their effort was good, in and out of possession. It’s difficult for us in the respect that Shrewsbury came here today – and

I’m not criticising them for it – they came here to stifle us really and make it really awkward for us. They got men behind the ball and did it really well. “In games like that you need to take your chances. We had a couple of good chances first half and Carlton’s had a good chance second half. I think if you score first in these games, then they have to come at you and it’s a more equal battle. We have to be patient at home because the more frustrated you get,

the more difficult it becomes and the harder it is to make a proper decision on the ball. “We tried getting them to move the ball quicker second half. But Shrewsbury are hard to break down

and the way they play made it really difficult for us. We need to get better than that, especially at home. We’ve picked more points up away from home because teams have a right go. But when teams come here at

MOORE PLEASED WITH FOCUSED ROVERS AGAINST PETERBOROUGH Darren Moore praised his team’s efforts at both ends of the pitch in the 2-0 win over Peterborough United on Saturday. Kieran Sadlier had a hand in both Rovers’ goals, crossing for James Coppinger’s header at the front post and extending the lead just 10 minutes later with a wonderful solo effort. Keeping a clean sheet against the league’s top scorers rounded off an impressive afternoon for Rovers. “We’re pleased with the result, it was a good afternoon’s work against what we

all know is a good team,” Moore said. “Like I said in the week, we were going to have to be at our best to get any kind of result, but I thought the players earned it. They worked extremely hard, took the chances when they came and towards to end, we battled well, put our bodies on the line and made sure we were there to block shots and crosses. If one man was beaten, there was another to back him up - I’m really pleased with how they went about their work. “We didn’t sit back when we got the

second, we wanted another one and another one. I thought we used the ball really well, got into threatening positions and when you keep getting into those positions you will score goals. I was pleased we kept creating chances.” Rovers have put together their best start to a league season for 17 years, but Moore refused to get carried away. “It’s been a solid start to the season, but we keep working. We’re relatively a new team, you’ve only got three or four players on the pitch from last

season, so we’re still working,” he added. “At the moment, the message is clear, and we’re focused on performances. I’ve been clear from day one about that. I’ll leave you to talk about stats - I can only echo what’s going on inside the football club in terms of going forward. “We try to stick to what we’re about, there’s a lot of belief in what we’re trying to do. You’re not seeing anything different in this game to any of the other games, we try to play when it’s time to play and we work hard out of possession.”

“It was a great way for us to respond with a result like that after a defeat during the week, to come back and win 2-0 with a great performance Goalkeeper from the boys means Seny Dieng felt it’s a great three Rovers responded points for us,” he said. to midweek “I go into any game disappointment in with the same perfect fashion as his preparation, I just clean sheet - on his want to play my game first league start the right way and I helped seal a 2-0 win feel that’s what I did over Peterborough here, it’s good for me United. to keep a clean sheet Dieng was pleased against a team that to shut out the Posh, are top of the goalwho were the league’s scoring charts at the minute. top-scorers heading “It’s great for the into the game.

whole team too to be able to stop them from scoring, the clean sheet is definitely down to the team performance here, we’re all very happy that we’ve been able to bounce back quickly.” Dieng is on a season-long loan from Championship outfit Queens Park Rangers, and says the London club are keeping a keen eye on his progress during his time in South Yorkshire. “Yyou always have to be prepared to play, you always have to

expect to be called upon, luckily for me my chance came up ahead of this game,” he added. “I’ll carry on doing the same in training to try and maintain the starting position, I just have one focus and that is do the best I can while I’m here. “Queens Park Rangers are watching clips of my games and they’ve also had someone to watch here too, I keep a close relationship with them too and hopefully everything together can help me to improve.”

the moment, they’re pleased with a point before we kick-off. “We didn’t really get round the outside of them today. We didn’t get a lot from our wingers and they’ve doubled up with a back five. The crosses came in from my centre-halves so it was difficult. We coaches we’ll have to help the team when we play

someone who are prepared to sit back, and we’ll try and be better to break them down.” After the 6-1 hammering of Bolton and a terrific point away at Sunderland, the Millers boss looked on the bright side of a point and a clean sheet to round off a long week. “I’ve got a few

positives, we had a good point in midweek and today is a point on a hot sunny day,” he added. “We’ve kept a clean-sheet and we were really trying to go for it. Unfortunately, it wasn’t our day. “I thought we limited them to few opportunities. Apart from a counterattack when we

were throwing the kitchen sink at them from a corner. I said to the lads that in a 95-minute game you can’t wait for the last 15 minutes for the impetus. “Massive credit to Shrews with the way they played. They made it difficult for us and they’ll be well pleased with the point.”

LOCAL FOOTBALL County Senior Leagues with Michael Clarke

There was unseasonably warm weather across the South Yorkshire region this weekend, and it was also hot on the pitch in the County Senior League, with 19 games taking place on Saturday afternoon. Premier Division Two goals from Enzo Guarini inspired league leaders Swinton Athletic to a 3-0 home win over Oughtibridge WMSC. Justin Greenwood was also on target for the undefeated Swinton. Grimethorpe LLFC’s great start to the season continued, as four goals from Neil Johnson helped them to a 5-4 away win over Stocksbridge Park Steels Reserves. CHARACTER, SPIRIT AND TOGETHERNESS Character, spirit and togetherness are key components for Garry Monk teams and the Owls boss saw all three on Saturday as his side salvaged a point against Fulham. Wednesday left it late, with substitute Atdhe Nuhiu stooping in stoppage time to head home and cancel out Tom Cairney’s opener. And Monk was delighted by the manner in which his side dug deep to post a point. He said: “We deserved something from the game because we never gave up, we showed

the qualities we will need throughout the season. “We had the character, the spirit and the togetherness and that’s the first thing you need if you are to succeed. “Even at a massive football club like Sheffield Wednesday, you need all these traits. The fans demand it first and foremost and that’s what my teams must have.” More specifically on the Cottagers clash, he added: “We had to get the tactics right today against a very good team and we did that for most of the first half.

“The only time we lost that balance was for the goal and good teams do punish you. So we made some tweaks at half time and they helped us for the second half. “The midfielders had to push up more and that left Steven Fletcher less isolated. We were far more on the front foot, and while there was a risk of being more open, we had to push forward. “We did that much better, we kept pushing, we kept probing and we got our just reward at the end.”

BACK TO BACK WINS FOR UNDER18S

youngsters continued their good start to the campaign on home soil. The decisive moment came on 32 minutes when L’Varn Brandy and Charles Hagan combined down the right and as the low cross went into the box from

Hagan, Elliott Vasalo pounced from close range to score. The Owls are now unbeaten since the opening day with three wins and two draws from their last five games and face a trip to Hull next weekend (11am).

The Owls Under18s made it back to back wins at the weekend overcoming Crewe 1-0 at Middlewood Road. Fresh off the back of a convincing 4-0 win away at Coventry the previous week, the Wednesday

HUNT SIGNS NEW OWLS CONTRACT Owls midfielder Alex Hunt has signed a new contract with the club, penning a deal until 2021. The Under-23s captain said he was delighted after extending his stay with Wednesday having joined the club aged seven. Hunt told swfc.co.uk: “I’m delighted, it’s my boyhood club.

“My dad was buzzing, it was his birthday when I got offered the new contract! It’s a massive thing for me, my younger brother and my family who are all Wednesdayites. “To sign my first professional contract was good but to get a new contract this early is a confidence boost for me to kick on. “I came here at seven and signed my first professional deal when I was 17, it’s about getting near that first team now or going out on loan to develop my career.” Hunt made his Wednesday debut against Sunderland

in the Carabao Cup last season and says he is determined to get back in first team contention. The 19-year-old added: “I think I’ve progressed well since my first team debut which was a big moment for me. “There’s a lot of distractions in football but you have to really get your head down and focus if you want to be in this game. “I want to get around the first team. We’ve got a new manager which is a good chance to impress, I’ve not trained with him yet, but I really look forward to it if I do.”

BLADES RETURN FROM MERSEYSIDE VICTORIOUS United recorded a first Premier League away win of the campaign after a 2-0 success over Everton at Goodison Park. The Blades produced a defensively sound performance aligned with some clinical finishing in attack to stun the hosts - increasing their away points tally to five for the season. After Yerry Mina put through his own net to hand United the half-time advantage, impressive sub Lys Mousset bagged a superb second to secure a deserved three points for Chris Wilder’s side. Blades manager Wilder made one change to the side with striker Callum Robinson replacing David McGoldrick in attack - the latter missing out with a groin issue. Everton forced the first half chance on six minutes as Richarlison forced his way through two challenges by Chris Basham before shooting high and wide from a tight angle. The hosts had another presentable opportunity on 11 minutes when the ball broke kindly for Morgan Schneiderlin lurking on the edge of

the area, but he dragged his shot wide via a deflection. Skipper Ollie Norwood was then cautioned for a late challenge, as the opening 15 minutes passed without major incident. The home side forced Dean Henderson into his first save on 17 minutes when Lucas Digne took aim from 20 yards, but the Blades stopper parried, and Basham cleared the loose ball. On 21 minutes both George Baldock and Bernard were cautioned following an altercation as the Blades wing back successfully shepherded the ball behind for a goal kick. Henderson was also shown a yellow for getting involved in the aftermath. Three minutes later Jack O’Connell ventured forward on the overlap for the first time but his inviting centre rolled all the way across the six-yard area without a touch. Just before the half hour mark Richarlison aimed an acrobatic effort well wide and Moses Kean smashed a shot well over from 30 yards. With five minutes remaining until the

break United took the lead. After winning a corner down the right, Norwood’s delivery was missed by ‘keeper Jordan Pickford and the advancing O’Connell only for Toffee’s defender YERRY MINA to head into his own net. The Blades faced a nervous wait on the legality of the goal, but following a VAR check, it was rightly given. United made inroads at the start of the second half when a well worked move found O’Connell advanced, his low centre from inside the area was put behind, and Everton cleared the following corner. At the other end, John Egan made a brilliant headed clearance from Gylfi Sigurdsson’s corner, and as Everton turned the ball back in, Henderson blocked a Kean strike from 12 yards. Boss Wilder brought on Mousset for Robinson in attack, whilst also made a tactical switch, sacrificing Norwood in place of the grit of Basham in midfield, allowing ex-Toffee Phil Jagielka to slot into the backline. With 17 minutes

remaining, John Fleck broke clear down the left and stood up a cross to the back post where Basham rose but planted his header wide. United, resolute in defence, then added a second with 12 minutes remaining. The Blades broke from deep with John Lundstram carrying the ball forward before playing a perfectly

weighted pass into the path of MOUSSET who timed his run to perfection before sliding the ball underneath the advancing Pickford from a tight angle. United comfortably held off any potential onslaught from the hosts, as Wilder’s side remained rock solid at the back for the remaining 12 minutes,

and the four added for injury time.

The owners... “I have always been consistent with this. I work for the club, and the owners, we are all custodians and we need to play a part in keeping the club together. My relationship with both Prince Abdullah and Kevin McCabe has always been excellent. They have always been fully supportive, we couldn’t have done it without both owners.”

Next transfer window... “In the summer we signed young, hungry players from The Championship who we thought could play in the Premier League. My confidence in this group is growing with every game. We are always looking to see what we need. We are maybe looking at two to three players coming in January.”

Stephen Bettis on...

Moving forward... “My relationship with Chris is well documented. We are good mates, but we have a professional relationship as well which is seen by the results. It is great not to have the distractions now, and we can move the club forward.”
