city launches building skills hub Continuing on from the success of ‘The Building Block’ programme, a new construction learning hub will open its doors at Harborough Avenue on 26 September. Situated next to the major Sheffield Housing Company (SHC) development in S2, the ambitious programme is coordinated by Sheffield City Council and is part of the Construction Skills Fund (CSF). It has already seen more than 85 people successfully move into full time construction work in just 6 months, providing local people with local jobs. With a shortage of construction workers in Sheffield, the initiative has provided a big boost to the city, supporting the council’s ambition to build 10,000 new homes over the next 10 years. Ellie was working

as a hairdresser before beginning her training with The Building Block. Now a full time bricklayer, Ellie credits the learning hub for helping her spark a new career. She said: “I wasn’t challenged enough as a hairdresser and I was speaking to my partner one evening who told me about a training course his boss was supporting alongside Sheffield City Council – The Building Block. I looked into it and thought immediately how great an opportunity this was to start a new career. I loved attending the hub; everyone on the course was in the same situation as me, looking to get started in a new career and so we all bonded over that. I was learning new skills every day and I felt a huge sense of

satisfaction knowing I was getting closer to my goal of becoming a bricklayer. I’m now fortunate enough to work as a bricklayer full time! I started with work experience on a new housing development at Manor Boot; my employers were so impressed with my work ethic I was inundated with offers of employment. I now really enjoy coming to work every day and I can’t envisage myself doing anything else.” Launched in October 2018 and delivered by the Construction Industry Training Board (CITB), the £22m Construction Skills Fund is funded by the Department for Education (DfE).The scheme has given organisations the opportunity to create 26 learning ‘hubs’ across the country, with the aim

of training more than 13,000 people to be ready for employment in the construction industry by March 2020. The hubs provide life-changing opportunities to start a career in construction, with particular focus on the longterm unemployed, career changers and unrepresented groups. Councillor Abtisam Mohamed, Cabinet Member for Education and Skills at Sheffield City Council, said: “Ellie’s story is great – it is fantastic that the council has enabled her to train in construction and find a new career where she is happy and fulfilled. The hub is a good way for local people to work in local jobs. Not only does The Building Block scheme provide people with very desirable qualifications, they are also gaining crucial work experience, giving

them the very best start in their new career.” Steve Radley, Policy Director of the Construction Industry Training Board, said: “Sheffield City Council has an ambitious plan to supply the city with 10,000 new homes over the next 10 years, and to successfully achieve that target it is crucial that new talent is recruited into the local construction industry. We’ve seen a fantastic response from local employers as they continue to recruit from the Building Block learning hub. We look forward to seeing further trainees placed in full time employment and helping to further regenerate the city of Sheffield.”

have your say on licensing laws

A public consultation is currently underway on the impact of licensed trade activities across the borough. Rotherham Council has arranged a number of drop in sessions for people to put forward their views on the effects of licensed trades such as the sale of alcohol, regulated entertainment, sale of food and drink and licensed gambling. The aim is to

understand the positive and negative impacts that these businesses create on the community, which can help to inform the council’s future policies. Rotherham Council’s Cabinet Member for Waste, Roads and Community Safety, Cllr Emma Hoddinott said: “The licensed entertainment and hospitality industry plays an important social and community role across the

borough, while also contributing to the local economy and employment. But we also know that there are links to crime, health, social harms and anti-social behaviour. That’s why we want to hear from people; so we can better understand how these licensable activities can influence those wider issues in the community whether that’s in a positive or negative way.”

The Council has an obligation to set policy and conditions in respect of the licensing and regulation of licensed premises and gambling establishments, but can also take account of the local picture when setting expected standards. Your input is especially important to help influence your local pubs & clubs! The first drop in session will be held on Wednesday 2nd

breast cancer - the warning signs Experts say that women should begin to regularly check their breasts for signs of the disease in their 20s. It’s the second most common cause of death for women, and rates are increasing – but do you actually know how to spot the early signs of breast cancer? New research has shed light on the genetics of the disease, and scientists believe they are now closer than ever to discovering exactly why some women develop breast cancer and others don’t. The OncoArray Consortium, which is the largest collective investigation on the genetics of the disease, has uncovered 65 new gene variants that appear to be responsible for increasing the risk. The results, published in science journals Nature and Natural Genetics, suggest around one in five women are at greater risk of contracting breast cancer because of mutations in their genes – which can be passed on through their families. While we may be closer than ever to understanding breast cancer’s origins, it’s still important to be vigilant when it comes to checking yourself regularly at home, no matter what age you are. Around one in eight women in the UK will be diagnosed with breast cancer during their lifetime, yet many do not know the signs and symptoms that they need to look out for. So we spoke to Dr Jasmine Just from Cancer Research UK, to find out what you should be looking out for. 1. Breast lump The first symptom of breast cancer for many women is a lump in their breast – but that shouldn’t be cause for immediate panic, as it may not necessarily be cancerous. Many of the symptoms of breast cancer, such as lumps, may in fact be caused by normal breast changes. In fact, 9 out of 10 breast lumps are benign (not cancerous). If you do spot a lump, however, you should book in to see your GP straight away to put your fears at ease. 2. Change in size, shape or feel of a breast The best thing to do is to regularly check your breasts to get a feel for what’s normal for you. Remember: everyone’s breasts are different shapes and sizes, so the more you check, the easier it will be to identify any changes. You may find that your breast might look bigger or have a different shape than usual. It also might feel different, but many healthy women find that their breasts feel lumpy and

tender before their period. 3. Breast pain Breast pain is a very common issue for women which can be caused by hormonal changes, so it’s not a reason to panic. You might get pain in one or both breasts, which may come and go throughout the day. If it continues, make sure to see a doctor. 4. Skin changes Abnormal changes can include everything from puckering, dimpling, a rash, or redness of the skin of the breast. The skin might look like orange peel or the texture might feel different than usual. This can be caused by other breast conditions, but you should get your doctor to check out anything that is not normal for you. 5. Change in the position of your nipple Another important change to look out for is the positioning of your nipple. Warning signs include the nipple turning in or sinking into the breast – or it could just look or feel different to usual. 6. Fluid leaking Fluid leaking from a nipple in a woman who isn’t pregnant or breastfeeding can be a visual sign of cancer, but it can also be caused by other medical conditions – so make sure to consult a doctor if you’re unsure. 7. Inflammatory breast cancer symptoms A rare type of breast cancer called inflammatory breast cancer can have different symptoms to other types. Your whole breast might look red and inflamed and feel sore. The breast might also feel hard and the skin might have the texture of orange peel. Most breast changes will not be cancer, however, it is important that you consult your GP to find out what’s causing the change. Your GP will be able to examine your breasts and tell you if there is no need for further investigation, or if they think it’s necessary to refer you to a breast clinic. This doesn’t necessarily mean that you have breast cancer, it may just be that your doctor wants to conduct further tests are needed to find out what is going on.

city heritage photography walk

Join us in the centre of industrial Sheffield for a photography walk around the historic city. You’ll be guided by one of Wessex Heritage experts who will be pointing out the city’s most interesting subject matter, alongside our professional photographer, who will offer hints and tips about making the most of your camera and the landscape around you. We’ll be taking in the changing landscape of Sheffield’s city centre, with insights into the patterns of regeneration and development that have led to the diverse mix of old and new we see today. What will I need? This walk is designed for those with an interest in photography, looking to broaden their skills and seek out new subjects. You will need to bring your own camera equipment with you. We recommend carrying light, as the walk

will take around 45 minutes. Where will we walk? The walk will be a circular route, starting and ending in the same place in the centre of Sheffield in the main square outside the train station. Wessex Archaeology representatives will be clearly marked in branded high visibility jackets. The walk will encompass a manageable 45 minute to 1 hour route. It will incorporate short stops at buildings and areas of interest to discuss the buildings, heritage and take photographs. How much does it cost? The walks cost £15 per person. Wessex Archaeology is a registered educational charity and all proceeds will be used for public benefit initiatives. The walk will be held on Saturday October 5th, at 10:00am, meeting in the main square outside the railway station.

survey reveals level of unclaimed help

• 98% of working parents in Yorkshire feel that childcare costs are too high • Incomes can’t cope with increasing childcare costs - nearly a fifth of those earning more than £40,000 per annum say childcare is unaffordable • 88% of part-time working parents in Yorkshire would consider working more hours if childcare costs were cheaper • 86% would be more likely to work for a company offering to pay into a childcare account • Nearly half of working parents in the region are unaware that tax-free childcare even exists A new survey has revealed that nearly half (48%) of working parents in Yorkshire are unaware that the government-backed Tax-Free Childcare scheme exists and could be missing out on hundreds of pounds in support. Despite being launched in April 2017 to replace Childcare Vouchers, which were closed to new applicants last October, many working parents are struggling to balance childcare costs with office hours, with 98% in the region stating that childcare costs are too high. The survey, which was carried out by Perrys Chartered Accountants to raise awareness of the tax benefits that working parents might be missing out on, also revealed that 88% of part-time workers with children would consider working longer hours if costs for childcare were cheaper. Childcare costs are notoriously high in the UK, with the average charge for sending a child under two to nursery equating to £127 per week for 25 hours (part-time). As a proportion of a family’s net income, on average 33% of outgoings will go towards paying for childcare. This is up to 29% higher compared with other countries in Europe. The UK’s Tax-Free Childcare scheme allows parents to get up to £2,000 per child, per year to help cover childcare costs. Declan McCusker, who is a Partner at Perrys Chartered Accountants, said: “Despite the introduction of Tax-Free Childcare it seems many parents are missing out. This is a concern, particularly when the majority of working parents find it difficult to pay for childcare during school holidays, when costs per child can more than double.” Kate Clifford is a part-time working parent with three children. She said: “Since I returned to employment, my husband and I haven’t taken time off together. We share our annual leave in order to reduce the costs of childcare during the school holidays. It can be incredibly expensive with three children attending a club daily during a five-day week. Fortunately, the company I work for is flexible and allows me to work my hours around childcare arrangements to help me to minimise costs. However, not every working parent has this option. It’s hard balancing parenting and working hours, and it becomes even more difficult when childcare costs are so high.” Declan added: “I’d recommend parents review their options. Wedding Guide Alternative Confetti Ideas

The tradition of throwing confetti is an old Pagan rite to wish the newlyweds a fruitful union. This tradition has been carried on through the centuries, and throughout the world. In Italy, it is traditional to throw nuts, raisins or petals to promote

fertility and prosperity, and in many countries it’s tradition to throw rice. In modern times, it has become common practice to throw paper and petals over the newlyweds. It is thought that Ann Landers, an American

columnist, is to thank for this after she invented a story saying that birds were exploding after eating dried rice at weddings. Paper confetti has traditionally been used for many years, and comes in almost every colour you can think

of. Foil can also be used. Vintage wedding confetti is a popular choice think Shakespeare, Pride and Prejudice, or your favourite piece of music. Bubbles are a great alternative and look great on camera. Bubbles are ecofriendly, just make sure they won’t stain your wedding dress! Petals are also eco-friendly. They are becoming ever more popular as they are long lasting, biodegradable and smell great too.

Balloon releases are a great alternative. They can include little messages and are visually beautiful, with a retro feel. Animal releases are perfect for anyone wanting something a little different and special. From doves to butterflies, these make a great addition to any wedding. Before deciding on what you want, speak to your church and venue, as some do not allow certain types of confetti.

‘A hilarious and heartfelt celebration of the life and songs of one of this country’s finest and funniest wordsmiths. Highly entertaining whether you are discovering Jake for the first time, or an ardent fan.’ The late Jake Thackray is being increasingly acknowledged as one of the greatest English songwriters of the twentieth century, a unique talent, whose songs are full of poetry, wit, irreverence and humanity. His intelligent and hilarious lyrics, talent for storytelling, clever wordplay, occasional, artful use of vulgarity and surreal imagination delighted many viewers and outraged some.

rounding off the season at crich tramway village Crich Tramway Village is taking part in the international event ‘The Big Draw Festival’ and this year’s theme ‘Drawn to Life’ focuses on creativity for health and wellbeing. Visitors will be able to get involved in drawing at Crich on Saturday 12th and Sunday 13th October. On the Sunday, in addition to the full-size electric trams, there will be a chance to see the

David Gould tram models in operation in the Exhibition Hall. The ever- popular Starlight Event, with illuminations and trams running in the dark into the early evening, runs from Monday 28th October to Saturday 2nd November 2019. There will be varied activities each day with fun for all the family, including ‘Crich’s Greatest Show’ where children can enter a draw

to switch on the Illuminations on the Monday. An Enchanted Forest trail along the woodland walk will take place all week (weather permitting). The daily programme of family events can be found on the website. Sunday 3rd November is the last day of the 2019 season when National Lottery players who purchase tickets between Monday 28th October and Saturday 2nd

November can use them to gain free admission at Crich Tramway Village. These can be for any National Lottery game including scratch cards for that week. The new season will open on Saturday 14th March 2020 with more exciting events planned for next year. For opening dates and times visit: www.tramway. co.uk or call 01773 854321.

FRIDAY 11TH OCT 2019 Show at 7:30pm

The Upbeat Beatles are second to none - powerhouse vocals, precision harmonies and tight musicianship. The guys have an easy, happy rapport with any crowd, giving them a reputation to be envied as the best in the business. There isn’t a band to touch them - 8 bars of “Twist and Shout” and you will know why! No other band can perform this song like the Upbeat Beatles! The show takes you through the Fab Four’s long and winding road from the early Cavern days through Beatlemania, America, Sergeant Pepper to Abbey Road, with narrative and full multi-media presentation. If you love the Beatles you’ll love this show, and if you don’t love the Beatles you’ll love this show!

TAKE A NEW CAREER PATH WITH GEOPACE TRAINING Most have experienced it. A doctor says you need some blood tests and a half a dozen stabs and prods later – sometimes more – the doctor has your blood sample and the patient has a sore arm that resembles a pincushion. Many healthcare institutions such as GP surgeries and hospitals now employ phlebotomists to perform the role of collecting blood from both in-patients and out-patients. Skilled phlebotomists – the healthcare professionals who take your blood – are the experts who have been gradually replacing nurses and doctors and who specialise in just collecting blood samples. Phlebotomy posts are usually very flexible and can vary from full and part-time hospital posts to part time work in surgeries and clinics. Geopace Training has built a nationwide reputation for teaching phlebotomy the right way and Geopace tutors travel from across country and even internationally to train phlebotomy students. Each phlebotomy class lasts two full days and at the end of the course students will have attained an accredited certificate in phlebotomy. Students need no prior experience in healthcare and come from all walks of life and all ages. The popular Introduction to Phlebotomy Course provides a very thorough grounding in both theory and practical elements and prepares students up to the point of ‘live blood draws’. “It’s also a lot of fun” says Amy, admin manager at Geopace Training. “Many students email us after completing the course to say how enjoyable it was whilst others email us to let us know that they have been accepted for phlebotomy jobs”. Geopace instructors are some of the most elite in the industry and the training programme is constantly updated to keep up with new developments and changes, so students receive the most current information and training available.

VACANCIES

OR EMAIL info@mercurynewspaper.co.uk Students attending the course are very hands-on, practicing on artificial arms which pump fake blood, with a choice of veins to perform and practise on. There is also a theory element to complete although there are no exams at the end. Students complete modules as they process through the course and it’s almost impossible for anyone to fail. Once completed the course awards a nationally recognised and accredited certificate in phlebotomy (Level 3 advanced).

courses

If you like the idea of working in the healthcare profession then why not visit Geopace Training’s website for more information at: www.geopace.net Rotherham courses are scheduled for this November (11th &12th) and again in the New Year (29th & 30th January).

Angler’s Corner

we weren’t, but what does that have to do with fishing anyway I hear you ask? with Clint Walker Everything, but why? Why has Thomas Cook gone under after a prestigious 178 A difficult week for me this week as I’ve year tenure? Bad management? Possibly. been made redundant. Brexit? Also, possibly. How about For some years, I’ve been trying to get changing retail and buying trends that a ‘foot in the door’ within the travel the company failed to adapt to, resulting in competitors taking market share and sector, and after getting through a tough an endless cycle of cash flow problems, job interview just two months ago, was enjoying life as a Thomas Cook employee repayment of bad debts and spiralling interest rates? Definitely, and fishing is in before the devastating collapse of the danger of going the same way… company resulted in thousands of job losses, and shattered dreams and holidays I am fed up of seeing anglers on social media pleading with fellow consumers for many. It happened without warning, to ‘buy local’ or ‘support your local and I, like many of my colleagues went independent’. These are the very same to bed on Sunday, not knowing if we anglers (and I suspect, both you and I) were at work the following day; sadly, who are then guilty of net surfing to find the cheapest possible price to buy that new reel, or match pole, or set of carp rods. This is not just an observation; talk to your tackle shop owner, and he will tell you that prospective purchasers will enter the shop, ‘tyre kick’ a product, then either find it cheaper online and buy it, or come NEW AND USED FISHING TACKLE back to the store with an online price

The obvious answer is that it isn’t and as a result of greed, the prevalent ‘want something for nothing’ attitude of society today and the constant squeezing of both disposal income and retail overheads, means that sooner or later, every single small trader, independent tackle shop or close to retirement shop owner will think that enough is enough, and either sell up, ship out, or be faced with insolvency….just like Thomas Cook… Increasing numbers of manufacturers are now selling direct, but why? Well, for starters, it cuts out the need for a rep, it increases their own margins considerably, and it gives them control of how much product enters the market. At a recent Angling Trades Association seminar, many traders and suppliers were bemoaning the market share of a particular retail player, purely because they have now started making demands of manufacturers and suppliers! THEY are dictating the price THEY pay the supplier, decaying or destroying similar accounts of nearby competitors, and WE are the ones who will eventually suffer as a result. When they have complete market dominance, they will increase prices, and you won’t be able to do a thing about it. If we continue to buy online, what you

save now will be lost in years to come when we can’t nip into the local shop for a packet of hooks, a pint of maggots or a new float. When the high street retail market is destroyed, you won’t be able to get items with free postage anymore, your options for making purchases will be confined to one or two with the means to hold mountains of stock in warehouses bought at prices that the small shops can only dream of and it will be our fault; but you will no longer get the benefit of great prices found online… and why should you? Businesses exist to make money, and once dominance is achieved, they make even more… Competition law is there for a reason, to protect the market, to protect the retailer, but for some reason, it seems that it is failing somewhat within the angling retail sector. More and more shops go to the wall as one brand grows with expansion following expansion, and acquisition after acquisition, but we still perpetuate the cheap deal… in time, I think it will all come crashing down, and we’ll only have ourselves to blame; food for thought methinks… Don’t believe me? Well look what has happened to the holiday sector. Thomas Cook go bust, and within hours, other companies have pushed up prices to profit from an increased demand from consumers who now have less choice so who suffers? We do…. told you so!

warne bemoans lack of creativity Millers chief Paul Warne was frustrated with his side’s efforts as they made the long trek home emptyhanded, following a narrow goal defeat at the hands of Bristol Rovers. Former Rotherham striker Jonson Clarke-Harris rubbed salt into Millers wounds as his second-half strike proved the difference between the sides, in a largely uninspiring affair at the Memorial Stadium. In a fairly even first

period, Rangers loanee Jake Hastie came closest for the Millers – with a fine effort which brought a fingertip save from Anssi Jaakkola before fizzing a dangerous centre across the Rovers goalmouth. However, ClarkeHarris’ fierce drive, just three minutes into the second half, gave Rovers the impetus and the home side never looked back although sub Matt Olosunde almost earned the Millers a share of the

spoils, in the dying minutes, with a rasping effort which brought another fine save from Jaakkola. Speaking to the assembled media afterwards, Warne admitted that his side struggled to regain their rhythm

following Rovers’ opener while conceding that they were punished for not making the most of their firsthalf opportunities. “When we did get the ball down and played in the first-half we created

DANIELS ENJOYS HIS DEBUT AS ROVERS TAKE A POINT ON THE ROAD Defender Donervon Daniels felt Rovers were good value for their point away at unbeaten Coventry City on Saturday. Rovers led through skipper Ben Whiteman’s first-half strike before being pegged back late on at St. Andrew’s but Daniels feels that, despite the disappointment of conceding late, his side can take heart from another strong performance on the road. “It was a well earned point, obviously there’s a bit of disappointment not to hold on to all three points but I felt

we all defended really well and everyone in the team did their bit to get the point,” he said. “We had a few chances to seal the game at the start of the second half where on another day that could take the game away from them, but every man worked hard and put their body on the line here. We’ll take the point away from home against a difficult side, we can move on now and we can have a really positive outlook when we reflect on it.” Daniels joined Rovers from Sky Bet Championship

side Luton Town at the beginning of September and started competitively for the first time in the 1-1 draw against the Sky Blues, and he is hoping to see his hard-work pay off over the next few months with a decent run in the side. “I’ve been working hard since I came here to try and force my way in, I’d played a couple behind closed doors games to get myself up to speed - I’ve put in a lot of work to get myself back out on the pitch and the gaffer said he trusted me to go out and perform,” he

added. “I enjoyed the game and personally I’m pleased with how I did for my first start of the season, now I want to try and consolidate that. It was a really good defensive performance from everyone, though. I didn’t really have a pre-season so when the opportunity to come here and work hard with a good bunch of lads came up I was happy to take the chance, I want to help us climb up the table as much as I can and am looking forward to putting in some hard work over the next few months.”

The stadium will display a thrilling funfair with two firework displays for its 10th year in a row. Entertaining the crowds throughout the night will be local radio station Trax FM, projecting music videos on a large outdoor screen. The sky will be lit up starting with the children display at 6:30pm followed by the main show at

8:45pm. Tickets are on sale at the Club Doncaster Box Office from 12noon on Monday September 30 and online at tickets. clubdoncaster.co.uk. This is the event you don’t want to miss with prices starting at £3 per person (when purchased in advance), with children under one metre tall going free. A family ticket for two adults and two

children (under one metre) is available for £6. Tickets purchased on the day will cost £4. DNA Card holders can purchase tickets for just £2 each but they must be bought in advance in person at the Club Doncaster Box Office. DNA Card discounts will not be available on the day.

chances.” Warne remarked. “We put loads of balls across the six-yard box but we didn’t get in on any of them. They had chances but the chance they did score from was inexcusable. We get frustrated but there is still 40 minutes left in the game. We still should have had

control and passed it but we didn’t and that is the most disappointing thing for me.” Despite the disappointing nature of the score line in Gloucestershire, Warne admits that Bristol Rovers will be a tough proposition for the majority of

Sky Bet League One opponents, on their home patch, by remarking that his side found the going tough, for large periods of the game. “I think we just got outmuscled really, which I hate to say.” Warne added.“We have no divine right to come here and win the game.

They have not lost a home game all season. They are a hard team to play against. They frustrated us really well and defended well on all the setpieces. We did not look menacing on any set-pieces and they deservedly won the game.”

This week in the County Senior League saw the return of the League Cup, with the first eight games of the 1st Round taking place, plus a smattering of league fixtures. Sheffield Union put their winless start to the league season to one side, as a goal from Bradley Sugden was enough to give them a 1-0 win against fellow Division One outift Kiveton Park. happy riverside return for monk’s owls Garry Monk said it mattered not when the goals went in following the last-gasp leveller against Fulham last Saturday. And here at his former club Middlesbrough seven days later, the Owls scored four times in an exhilarating first half that secured a resounding win on Teesside. Barry Bannan was instrumental as a rampant Wednesday struck twice inside the opening six minutes, aiming a curling corner from which Adam Clayton guided into his own net before delivering a superb set piece for Dominic Iorfa to double the lead. Boro hit back through Paddy McNair but the

Owls regrouped in an instant for Adam Reach to also make a big impact on his old stamping ground. And still there was more from Monk’s men before the break as Steven Fletcher bagged his fifth goal of the season to put the game all but out of the home side’s reach. In an electrifying start for Wednesday, they hit the front after five minutes. Bannan’s corner was almost unplayable and Clayton could only glance past his own goalkeeper. It then got even better for the Owls just a minute later. This time Bannan picked out the advancing Iorfa with a splendid free kick and the latter stooped to head

home from six yards. The hosts had one option in a bid to recover from their nightmare beginning and that was to commit men forward. And on 19 minutes they halved the arrears when McNair slammed an unstoppable drive past Keiren Westwood on the half volley following a Clayton corner. But four minutes later, the visitors promptly restored their two-goal cushion. Atdhe Nuhiu rolled Reach into possession and the former Boro loanee shifted the ball onto his left foot and found the bottom corner to make it 3-1. It was all Wednesday and after Julian Borner missed the

target with a firm header, Fletcher went one better on 32 minutes. Reach was the architect, picking out the in-form Scot as the back stick and his downward effort arrowed beyond the stunned Darren Randolph. Boro had a mountain to climb in the second half and should have eased the ascent when Britt Assombalonga

was presented with two golden opportunities. First the striker skewed his shot from close range with the goal gaping before rounding Westwood moments later and somehow firing wide of the post on the angle. With those chances went the hosts’ realistic prospects of forging a comeback and it could have been all

over on the hour but Randolph did well to deny Moses Odubajo when the defender was sent through by substitute Massimo Luongo. Boro did their best to dictate the pace of the contest through the closing stages but the earlier damage was too much and Wednesday emerged with three very impressive points.

gary thanks fans

Garry Monk hailed his side’s impressive 4-1 win at Middlesbrough but insists there is still room for improvement all over the field. Reflecting the high standards set by the new Wednesday manager, Monk was delighted with the way in which the Owls dismantled Boro before the break while highlighting areas for better things along the way. He said: “You have to be pleased with a 4-1 win away from home because this is an incredibly demanding division where there are no easy games. It was a devastating performance in the first half, the deliveries from

the set pieces and the finishing was exceptional. But I wasn’t pleased with their goal and how we conceded it. That shows that we can improve, we can get better. We can get better offensively and defensively but that’s the challenge and it’s a very exciting prospect at this massive club. But you can see the potential we have. I thought we put everything into that game, the players stuck to their tasks, they knew the gameplan and stuck to it to the letter. I looked at Middlesbrough and thought they are vulnerable from set pieces and quality deliveries and credit

to the players for putting that into practise.” Monk also paid tribute to the travelling army of Wednesdayites who made the trip to Teesside and offered their token outstanding support. He added: “They were magnificent all the way through and I’m delighted we’ve given them something to shout about today. I was lucky enough to have a short spell here as a player so I know just how big this club is and can be. The fans are a huge part of that process and to deliver a 4-1 win away from home is very satisfying.”

all the plaudits but no points The Blades received a standing ovation at full-time against the European champions, having gone toe-totoe with Liverpool at the Lane, but unfortunately for United, Georginio Wijnaldum’s secondhalf strike proved to be the difference between the two teams. Liverpool enjoyed plenty of the ball in the opening minutes, but it was the Blades through McBurnie who had the first shot on target, after he’d cut inside Matip from the left. United continued to take the fight to the visitors, Robinson got the better of van Dijk, allowing Stevens to force a corner, but Egan could direct his header at the back post towards goal. On 21 minutes, United came within a whisker of taking the lead, Fleck picked out the run of Robinson and his shot had the beating of Adrian, only for it to fly inches wide of the far post. At the other end, Basham snuffed out the danger from Mane, before Stevens was robbed of possession by Salah, who curled an effort wide. The

noise inside the Lane was deafening at times as the Blades again threatened on the break, but with McBurnie lurking from Robinson’s clip into the box, van Dijk produced a timely headed intervention, before Robertson threw himself full length to block a shot from Lundstram. In the 34th minute, the Blades had a huge let off. Van Dijk launched a ball over the Blades defence, but clean through on goal, Mane couldn’t control his effort with only Henderson to beat. Robertson then fired wide after United had only half cleared a cross from the right. Moments later, the same player came even closer, hitting the post, after Salah and then Firmino had favourably bounces of the ball go their way. As one minute of injurytime was signalled by the fourth official, the Blades threatened again, but Matip headed clear ahead of McBurnie after Lundstram had got into a dangerous position at the back post from Stevens deep cross. Led by Fleck, United were quickly on the front foot at the beginning of

the second period, but again van Dijk stood between the Blades and a chance at goal, with Robinson jogging on the spot. The same combination threatened in United’s next attack, but again van Dijk intervened. McBurnie headed over from a promising position from Norwood’s flat corner, whilst at the other end there was brief concern as VAR quickly checked a challenge by Lundstram on Mane in the penalty area. On the hour, Robinson received a warm hand as he was replaced by Mousset and his pace almost paid instant dividends. He chased a pass into the channel before helping create a shooting opportunity for Norwood, which ended with Adrian saving at the expense of a corner. The Blades continued to push men forward. Fleck saw an effort from inside the area blocked, as did Lundstram, before Adrian collected Baldock’s cross at the near post. But on 70 minutes United fell behind, against the run of play. Origi’s cross landed kindly for WIJNALDUM whose

fanzine offers chance to support blades and local charities and sales so far have to St Luke’s Hospice SHEFFIELD United fans Mark Swift and George Battersby have proved they’re in a league of their own as they support two top Sheffield charities. The friends have launched their own football fanzine, Cuttin Edge Blades – and proceeds are going

and the Children’s Hospital Charity. With unique artwork and feature articles supplied by local young artist Alistair Wood @art_ATG (also a huge Blade!) the magazine offers something new and fresh to Blades fans,

been buoyant, with the first two issues selling out completely. Copies of the magazine – which costs £3 including delivery - are available at the Cuttin Edge Blades Facebook page and there is also a Twitter feed @cuttinedgeblade “We were delighted when Mark and George approached us about launching this exciting new magazine and supporting us at the same time,” said St Luke’s Corporate Fundraising Manager Jack Kidder. “They’re already on to their third edition and we wish them every success as the season continues.”

volley squirmed under the body of Henderson and trickled into the net, but the Blades stopper reacted positively, denied Mane and then Salah in quick succession. And United’s number one came to the hosts rescue again moments later, denying Salah who had found himself through on goal after a stray pass by the Blades. The clock was ticking down and Adrian was booked for timewasting, before substitute Clarke got in behind van Dijk only to put his effort over the bar from close-range in front of an expectant Kop end. Four minutes of added time were signalled by fourth official Langford, which gave the Blades hope, but Liverpool saw the game out to cruelly deny the Blades something from a game they were more than it for long periods. Although the fans were delighted with the showing, Chris Wilder’s post-match nterview revealed his frustration at once more failing to take anything from a game in which they matched, and often dominated the visitors.
