council announce over 3000 new homes Plans for the largest council house building programme for decades are taking shape in Sheffield. If approved, over 3,100 new council houses will be built over the next 10 years to meet the increased demand for affordable housing. Government policies and challenging market conditions has meant that in Sheffield, and nationally, the number of new affordable homes built up to now has not matched the increasing demand for social housing. 32,000 council homes have been sold by the council since 1980 through Right to Buy, which has decreased rent income into the

council and reduced the availability of council homes. New spending flexibility to build more homes, which was curbed by Government until it lifted the Housing Revenue Account (HRA) borrowing cap in October last year, will now allow the council to borrow the money to build more council homes. The plans aim to help as many people as possible to live in a warm, safe and affordable home. Proposals for consideration will be to provide new Extra Care Schemes, specialist accommodation for vulnerable people, new interim temporary accommodation and a

range of general needs housing across the city. New build homes built on the Council’s housing allocated sites will be acquired by the council and homes will be acquired ‘off plan’ from private sector developers plus through s106 properties from private developers. S106 are private agreements between local authorities and developers which allow councils to specify their social housing requirements for a new development. The proposals, which are designed to meet a variety of housing needs for those looking for a new home, also recommend a small programme of shared ownership homes in some

areas to increase housing choice where households can move into a different tenure and free up an affordable home. With this work there is a requirement that the council can only continue building as long as robust HRA Business Plans are in place to be able to safely manage finances. The work will be reviewed each year to make sure that any additional borrowing is at a level that poses no additional risk to the 30 year HRA Business Plan as the programme builds more homes. Councillor Paul Wood said: “We’ve got a lot of work to do to meet demand and our plans are robust and carefully considered, with

people’s needs at the heart of them. Everyone needs a safe, warm and affordable home and that’s absolutely what we’re trying to do here. We’ve already delivered 500 homes and we’re aware that the pace of replacement homes for those we lose through right to buy is critical to making this a reality for everyone.” All homes built by the Council as part of this programme will meet lifetime home standards and include apprenticeship and local employment opportunities. council leaders in demand for hs2 re-think

The leaders of Rotherham & Doncaster Councils have met Douglas Oakervee, who is leading the HS2 review. They have restated their position to go back to the original Meadowhall option or fundamentally reconsider the eastern leg. The two leaders have been deeply concerned at the recent announcement of rising costs and

extended timescales for completing HS2. This is another devastating blow for residents and communities who are set to see more properties demolished than originally claimed. Rising costs could also mean HS2 will put minimum mitigations and environmental protections in place which would be wholly unacceptable. It could also impact the funding available

to deliver vital rail investment programmes such as Northern Powerhouse Rail and essential local upgrades. Doncaster Mayor Ros Jones said: “Delivering HS2 must not come at the expense of other vital rail investment in the north or measures to protect communities. That would be a betrayal of our region and the Government’s commitment to rebalance the national

economy. We are set to see mass demolitions to have HS2 pass through our region with negligible beneficial impact for our residents, communities and economy. It’s all pain and no gain. Passengers and services in our region are suffering now. We can’t wait another 20 years to deliver much needed rail improvements. We need to go back to the Meadowhall option or

seriously look at the planned eastern leg.” Cllr Chris Read, Leader of Rotherham Council, said: “The current HS2 proposal offers little or no economic benefit to the Rotherham borough and its businesses. We need either a Meadowhall stop or we call on the Government to scrap the development all together rather than build it in a way that will cause years of disruption at massive

cost, and instead reallocate the savings to fund essential improvements to regional rail connectivity through the Northern Powerhouse Rail.” The call comes amid the latest train performance figures, which show that over the last 12 weeks: • less than half of trains at Doncaster and Rotherham Stations were on time; • 8% of services at Doncaster station

were at least 10 minutes late and a further 3% were cancelled entirely * The two leaders argue the current Sheffield spur option for HS2 • delivers a secondclass solution for South Yorkshire: • lower economic benefits and fewer jobs created; • fewer trains, longer journey times, added pressure on the existing network and limited capacity for future growth;

• unacceptable impact on communities and the environment; • not the option anyone wanted. The proposed spur route cannot be properly delivered without the Northern Powerhouse Rail package of investment measures otherwise there are no services to Leeds and the north-east from the terminating HS2 spur at Sheffield.

ALBERT SNODGRASS

I gave up my seat to a blind person on the bus. That’s how I lost my job as a bus driver. Apparently the clocks go back next month. Well I’m screwed then. I can’t remember where I got mine from. I went to a funeral and asked the widow... “Mind if I say a word?” “Please do.” She replied. I cleared my throat and said: “Plethora.” “Thanks, that means a lot.” She said. I just bought 50 bottles of Tipex. Big mistake! My wife works as a magician’s assistant. I think she’s picked up a few tricks I came home from work early and she was in the bedroom. She said, “Abracadabra!” and my mate, Dave, came out of the wardrobe, stark naked. Poor sod must have wondered what the hell was going on. My girlfriend and I are trying this whole “long distance relationship” thing. I have to stay 100 feet away from her at all times. Also, the police say I should stop referring to her as my girlfriend. My grief counsellor died recently. Luckily he was so good, I really didn’t care.

If you’ve dreamed about studying at university but think you’ve left it too late, think again! The University of Sheffield’s Department for Lifelong Learning is offering degrees with a foundation year for adults coming to University later in life. Unlike traditional routes into university, admission to a degree with a foundation year is on the basis of an applicant’s work and life experience, and their passion and commitment to their chosen course. There is no one single path that bring students to the foundation year; they have been working, travelling, caring for children or other family members, and building valuable life experience. The foundation year is spent developing academic skills, extending subject knowledge and building confidence in students’ ability to succeed. Degrees with a foundation year are available in over 30 different subject areas, from English Literature to Biomedical Science. Around half of the students studying for a foundation year come from Sheffield and the surrounding area, allowing them to continue to with working, caring and family commitments. The Department for Lifelong Learning has many years of working with such students, and offers specific support for the challenges they may face. Staff are also expert in helping mature students to overcome some of the issues that may have held them back during their earlier life. Emma, a BA History with Foundation Year student, whose earlier school life was made difficult as a result of undiagnosed dyslexia

says “The University supported me to get my dyslexia diagnosis and this has made things so much easier. I have been amazed about how much help and support there is for students”. Adults return to education for a wide range of reasons. Many are studying a subject they have held a lifelong passion for, many are studying for a degree to allow them to embark on new careers, and some simply wish to do something for themselves after supporting and caring for others for many years. The University’s aim is to support every student to achieve their best on their chosen path. What is common amongst all mature students is the realisation that their age is irrelevant as they integrate with others at the University, as every student brings their own unique experiences to share with fellow students. Sarah, a BMedSci Health and Human Sciences with Foundation Year student says: “My children have all grown up so I felt that now is the right time. I have loved meeting people from all walks of life. We all support each other. You won’t feel at all out of place”. The University of Sheffield will be hosting an open evening for adults thinking about returning to study on 20th November 2019. community champion awards 2019 A teenager from Tinsley, two men who set up a men’s mental health group in Chesterfield and a young mum from Sharrow have been named as some of the winners of the Community Champions Awards, which were organised by BBC Radio Sheffield and South Yorkshire’s Community Foundation. Adil Mohammed, who has just turned 18, from Tinsley in Sheffield won the Young Champion Award. Adil has campaigned on community issues in Tinsley for several years and recently led a campaign to save Tinsley youth centre. He has also organised litter picks and helped neighbours to clear snow during the winter months. Adil was delighted to win his award: “It’s quite surreal, I wasn’t expecting it. But I’m just really happy.” Adil explained why he decided to get involved in helping his community, “It was just the lack of representation that young people had. I was looking around the community and no one wanted to step up so I took it upon myself to step up and go out and represent young people and people that aren’t well represented in Tinsley. ” The Outstanding Champion Award went to friends Fraser Longford and Jason Cotton who last year set up the group Men Talk in Chesterfield. The group encourages men in the area to talk about their mental health and meetings have helped hundreds of men who had previously been considering suicide after experiencing it in their own lives. Fraser said: “It is emotional because it’s quite personal. You shouldn’t really be celebrating it because I’ve lost a really close personal friend but at the same time we’re saving other people, giving people a chance to speak. So this is really for my mates Paul, Jamie and Dean.” Jason Cotton added: “I’m absolutely elated. It’s so humbling the amount of talent and the amount of heroes that are in this room tonight.” Sahird Ishard from Sharrow won the Neighbourhood and Environmental Champion Award. She set up Mum’s United to tackle anti-social behaviour, knife crime and drug problems in her community. Speaking at the awards ceremony Sahird said: “It’s really humbling and I’m just shocked that people have recognised the work we do. It’s not just me there’s a team behind us. We need to recognise as a community that there is a problem and we need to face it head on and unified together.” BBC Radio Sheffield revealed the winners of the first ever Community Champions Awards last night (Thursday 3 October)

at a glittering awards ceremony at Sheffield Cathedral. Over 300 people and organisations from across South Yorkshire and North Derbyshire were nominated for an award. From these nominations, 24 finalists were chosen for eight different awards. All the finalists attended last night’s awards ceremony alongside BBC Radio Sheffield presenters and VIP guests including the High Sheriff of South Yorkshire, H.M. Lord-Lieutenant of South Yorkshire and the Lord Mayor of Sheffield - Tony Downing. The Community Champions Awards were launched earlier this year to shine a light on the good work being done across South Yorkshire and North Derbyshire. BBC Radio Sheffield listeners were asked to nominate people who have made a difference to people’s lives across the region. The winners in each category were: • Young Champion Award - Adil Mohammed from Tinsley in Sheffield Business Champion - Drone Valley Brewery in Dronfield • Neighbourhood and Environmental Champion - Sahira Irshad from Sharrow in Sheffield • Community Group Champion Edlington Community Organisation from Doncaster • Health, Wellbeing and Fitness Champion - De Hood Boxing centre in the Manor area of Sheffield • Creative Community Champion Rachel Horne from Doncaster • Team Champion Award - KickBack Recovery founded by Mick Hartley • Outstanding Champion Award - Frazer Longford and Jason Cotton who started the group Men Talk in Chesterfield. Toby commented: “The Community Champions Awards evening has been a celebration of some amazing unsung heroes across our region. We know there are some remarkable and inspiring people doing fantastic work in South Yorkshire and North Derbyshire and it’s brilliant to be able to recognise and reward some of these people this evening. Keep up the good work!” Katrina Bunker said: “It was a wonderful evening in Sheffield celebrating some of our region’s amazing community champions. Shining a light on some of the positive work going on to make our local communities better is an important part of what we do at BBC Radio Sheffield. We should all feel proud that so many people around us are doing such great and important work to help local people.”

reading charity seeks volunteers for schools

Volunteers are needed to help bring the magic of books to children in primary schools and early years settings across Sheffield. Recruited, trained and placed in by national reading charity Coram Beanstalk, reading helpers (volunteers) support children aged 3-13 through weekly sessions and over one academic year to read well - not just through recognising the words but through the enjoyment of sharing books together, chatting about them and developing deeper understanding of the content. The charity will be training and placing volunteers in Sheffield schools and settings over the coming weeks. Ginny Lunn is Managing Director of Coram Beanstalk: “Coram Beanstalk volunteers help encourage, motivate and support children in a way that helps them feel positive about their reading and sets them up for success. Our reading helpers work with children who, for a variety of reasons, don’t feel confident around books and would benefit from weekly sessions outside of the classroom with someone who can help ‘open the door’ to reading. Our vision is to ensure that all children have the opportunity to become confident and able readers and we know that the first step to achieving this is through encouraging a love of books at an early age. We will be continuing to recruit and place volunteers across Sheffield and the surrounding areas over the next academic year, so if you feel you could help inspire children to discover a lifelong love of books, please do get in touch with us to find out how you can get involved.” Angela Jones is one of the Coram Beanstalk reading helpers who will be returning to a school this September: “The enjoyment and satisfaction I get from giving my time and making a difference to these children is immense. I would highly recommend it to anyone considering doing this. I have enjoyed every minute. I feel I have made a difference in a little one’s life. I am looking forward to being back this term and meeting the new children.” Coram Beanstalk works with schools across Sheffield to deliver a range of evidence-based programmes that have been developed to ensure children who most need help get that encouragement and support in the best way possible. New statistics show that 30% of primary school leavers in Sheffield didn’t achieve the expected levels in reading in 2018-19. Across England last year Coram Beanstalk supported 13,400 children nationwide through the help of 3,700 reading helpers and through a range of programmes. By March 2020 the charity’s aim is to reach 15,000 children through the help of 4,000 volunteers and is still looking for more reading helpers to make this happen. For more information about the programmes available to schools in Sheffield, or to apply as a volunteer in a school or early years setting, please visit the website at www.corambeanstalk.org. uk or call Coram Beanstalk on 020 7729 4087.

‘A hilarious and heartfelt celebration of the life and songs of one of this country’s finest and funniest wordsmiths. Highly entertaining whether you are discovering Jake for the first time, or an ardent fan.’ The late Jake Thackray is being increasingly acknowledged as one of the greatest English songwriters of the twentieth century, a unique talent, whose songs are full of poetry, wit, irreverence and humanity. His intelligent and hilarious lyrics, talent for storytelling, clever wordplay, occasional, artful use of vulgarity and surreal imagination delighted many viewers and outraged some.

award-winning nostalgia show returns home to sheffield venue Groovy Gazza Productions, local producers of ‘A Salute to the 1940’s’ are bringing their national award winning show to the Merlin Theatre in Sheffield on Sunday Oct 20th. Gary Birtles who is the producer of the show says, ‘We are really looking forward to coming back to Sheffield. Its been few years since we were here with the show but

we have good support on our home territory’. The show is a traditional 1940s variety show and features tributes to some the stars of the 40’s including George Formby, The Andrews Sisters, Gracie Fields, G.I Frank Sinatra and Sheffields own Vera Lynn, Lorrie Brown. Regular readers will know that Lorrie is the top Vera Lynn tribute in the UK after winning 2 na-

tional awards from the Agents Association including a ‘Music Industry Award’ for her 25yrs as a tribute artiste. The award was presented to her earlier this year at a glittering ceremony run by the National Tribute Music Awards and a special message was recorded for her from Dame Vera Lynn herself, who congratulated her on the award. Lorrie

met Dame Vera 4yrs ago after she had heard of Lorrie’s first award. Gary will be performing his usual role of Air Raid Warden/compere in the shape of Mr Braithwaite. The cast of 6 take the audience on a non stop 2hr show of music and comedy featuring a few extra guests along the way. The show has now been touring for 10yrs and has performed in Sheffield

twice before at the City Hall and as guests in the Peace Gardens on Armed Forces and Veterans Day. Gary says, ‘We have performed the show in every conceivable venue, from someones conservatory to celebrate a ruby wedding, to a 1940’s event at Severn Valley Railway performing to a crowd of 1,000 on the platform at the station. Gary adds,

‘Usually people just think we are just for a more mature audience, but we get many younger people who bring their parents and grandparents to see the show and they really get into the spirit of the show’. ‘A Salute to the 1940’s is at the Merlin Theatre, Nether Edge, Sheffield on Sunday 20th October at 2pm. Angler’s Corner

with Clint Walker

It begins…pike season! It’s my favourite time of the year at last, but rather stupidly, earlier in the year when considering a holiday, my wife distracted me and we booked a trip to Italy, so I won’t be on the bank for the fantastic 1st October! I’m a bit of a traditionalist when it comes to pike fishing, so the opening day of the season is one I anticipate immensely, and I look on with some envy at those who post pictures of pike caught in the run up to the big day by other anglers who start their season a little earlier than I… I do have access to a club water which allows pike fishing all year, but somehow, it just doesn’t seem right to me… My preparation has already started though; my freezer is well stocked with excellent Baitbox deadbaits, packed to the gunnels with freshly blast

frozen roach, smelt, lamprey and more, and I’ve taken delivery of a few newly released items from Pikepro which I’m also looking forward to using. My reels have been respooled, old rigs cut from rods and safely discarded, new traces twizzled and safely stored in the brand new Pikepro rig bin, club cards checked to ensure my ugly mug stares from within, and my rucksack loaded with everything I need to get back on the bank; I might even treat myself to a new flask! I can’t wait! I’ve also noted the usual proclamations from anglers new to pike fishing who intend to get out and tackle a toothy predator for the first time, asking what kit to use, which baits are best, and as always, where to go. Many pike anglers are fiercely protective of their hotspots and rightly so; the pike, despite is fearsome reputation, is a delicate beast at the best of times, and early in the season when water temperatures are still fairly high, they expend a huge amount of energy trying to escape, so are even more susceptible to damage from inexperienced anglers who have more enthusiasm than technique. Don’t get me wrong, I’m all for new pike anglers taking on these hugely impressive fish, but please be sensible about it. If you haven’t fished for them before, the best way to approach it is with an angler who can show you the ropes, demonstrate how to tackle up safely, and how to handle pike properly; it will save a lot of bloodshed (probably yours) in the long run… Failing that, there is a lot of quality content online,

The Pike Angling Club of Great Britain also has some superb guidelines to help you safely return your prize catch, and you can find the details here; http://www.pikeanglersclub.co.uk/aboutpac/ handlingcode.htm Last year, I wrote extensively about single hook fishing, using a variety of circle hook patterns with success; I used the single hook rigs to demonstrate that pike fishing doesn’t have to be complicated, and that it could be made even simpler by using such rigs. It was prompted by witnessing an angler leave a run for too long, resulting in a deeply snared pike which he couldn’t unhook, and which I had to deal with on his behalf. Admittedly, a single hook offers less options for actually mounting the bait, but it did make removal much easier which is ideal for the first-time piker, so is something to consider. If you are confident enoungh to use trebles though, it’s a good idea to use the semibarbed variety to make removal safer. Be properly prepared to unhook fish too. Once my catch is gently laid within the confines of my soft walled cradle, I have a pair of long forceps, long nosed pliers, sidecutter pliers and angled forceps on the bank with me, and importantly have two pairs of each just in case I misplace one. It is vital to have the right kit to get the hooks out, far more important than the correct bait, or the best rods; if you can’t get the hooks out, then you shouldn’t be fishing for pike! Once you are kitted out properly though, then like me, this time of year may become your favourite too. There is something about early morning mists on the water, silvery dew, or later in the year, crisp frost on the grass as I walk to my chosen spot,

curled brown leaves gently falling onto still waters as I sit behind the rods with a steaming cup of tea in hand waiting for the first twitch of the bobbins or dip of the float which indicates interest from beneath the surface… there are a lot fewer anglers on the bank too; perfect! So, that’s it then; mentally, I’m ready to go, I’ve stepped past the massed ranks of barbel and carp rods in my tackle den, and right at the back found the pike rods, and brought them to the front where they’ve been wiped down, rings checked and safely stowed in the rod bag. Reels have been oiled, rigs have been examined and checked again, the bait bag washed out and dried, gas canisters replaced, mess tins polished and rucksack zipped up; all I need to do now is add bait and I’ll be on the bank… I’ve just got to get ten days in the sun out of the way first! The brand new website from the team at Pikepro/ Baitbox is also a hugely useful source of top tactics, tips and tales from a number of respected (and me!) pike anglers who will share their efforts throughout the year and really is worth a look, so keep an eye on it for the latest team updates and catch reports. There will be details of exciting new products too, and video content that may just help you put that fish of a lifetime and the bank, so be sure to check in every now and then for a look. My top tip for this forthcoming year is to strike early, as soon as you get any indication at all; it is better to miss a run than leave it to develop for too long and risk a deeply hooked fish… It will save your fingers too! Finally, enjoy your pike angling, I know I will, and I can’t wait to tell you how I get on! Tight lines…

millers end sky blues’ undefeated run ROTHERHAM United brought Coventry City’s ten game unbeaten league run to an end in spectacular fashion as braces from Michael Smith and Matt Crooks made it a miserable Millers return for former player and manager Mark Robins. Following their disappointing defeat at the hands of Bristol Rovers in their last outing, Manager Warne rang the changes. The Millers almost caught the visitors cold early on when Liam Walsh’s errant pass was latched upon by Jamie Lindsay, who

gave Smith, a glimpse of goal but Fankaty Dabo put in a timely tackle to prevent him getting his shot away. Moments later, Jake Hastie embarked on a trademark mazy run which saw him burst into the Coventry box but the Rangers loanee was snuffed out by a retreating defender before Smith headed over from Hastie’s centre, in the next Millers attack. The Sky Blues had a scare when Olosunde’s run was halted but Matt Crooks floated a cross which evaded the attentions of Wood, but Brandon Mason, in attempting to clear

the danger, headed back towards his own goal but Marko Marosi was wellstationed to collect the ball. However, Rotherham were rewarded for their early superiority by breaking the deadlock, just before the quarter hour,

when the ball was innocuously threaded into the right channel and Smith delivered a delicious centre into the visitors box and Crooks towered above his marker to plant a powerful downward header in the heart of the Coventry goal and the

sheaf feels hard done by as pompey snatch three points Midfielder Ben Sheaf felt Rovers were hard done by after a late defeat to Portsmouth in Sky Bet League One. Ellis Harrison’s 91st-minute header saw Pompey snatch three points at the Keepmoat Stadium, despite a dominant performance from Rovers, and Sheaf is looking for his side to take more chances in front of goal. “It was a pretty dominant performance from us to be honest so we’re all a bit disappointed to be coming away from that with nothing to show for our efforts, we know

we need to take our chances more,” he said. “We created a lot and we did well to make those entries into the final third as much as we did, we just need to find that cutting edge and that ruthlessness in front of goal to improve those results. It’s disappointing not to get anything when you know just how much you’ve dominated the ball and possession, restricted their chances, but they’ve took their goals well and credit to the lad at the end because it was an unbelievable header.”

Sheaf, on a seasonlong loan from Arsenal, has been a regular starter under Darren Moore so far this campaign, and he feels there is a lot more to come from both him and his team-mates. “I’m really enjoying myself here at the minute, I’ve played a lot of football whilst I’ve been here and I’m feeling good, we play some really good stuff and the style of play really suits my game and the way I like to play,” he added. “I’m looking to continue that and I want to help us get a few more wins on the board

now, we’ve been doing all the right things recently but we just need to start putting the chances in the back of the net. I think generally the start for us all has been fairly positive, you could look at the two games we’ve lost in the league and say that we probably didn’t deserve to come away with nothing, overall we know we’ve come a long way but there’s still a lot more to come from us I’m sure.”

rovers sofa raffles raises £1000 £1,000 has been donated to Bluebell Wood thanks to a raffle held by Doncaster Rovers. Supporters entered the raffle in order to win a Doncaster Rovers sofa made by KC sofas. The raffle had raised £768 when the winner – Kevin Baker – was drawn. Kevin and his company Red Viking Rail decided to generously top

the money up to £1,000 in order to better support the children’s hospice. The cheque was presented to the charity by Matty Blair ahead of Rovers match vs Peterborough United and on Tuesday October 1, Alfie May travelled to the hospice to have a look around and to meet some of the residents. He also surprised

some of the children with tickets to an upcoming Rovers match. Mark Hughesman said: “We were delighted to facilitate the raffle on behalf of KC Sofas. It was a great idea and meant we could help raise money for a wonderful and important charity Bluebell Wood. We were really pleased with the final total but we have to say

a massive thank you to Kevin who generously topped the donation up. Bluebell Wood are there for parents and families at some of the worst moments a parent can possibly face. They offer incredible support and we’re so pleased to be able to make this donation to them.”

ball squirmed under the body of Marosi, to put the home side ahead. The Millers were granted an opportunity to double their lead when a hopeful ball saw Crooks in a footrace with McFadzean, who under pressure from the home midfielder, under hit a back pass to Marosi, and Smith nipped in front of the former Doncaster stopper, who clipped his heels and the referee had no hesitation in pointing to the spot. Smith dusted himself down from the resultant penalty when he kept his nerve to stroke the ball past the outstretched hand of the Slovak ‘keeper from 12 yards to find the far corner of the net. The Millers were running riot and they came close to a third goal when Hastie was put in the clear, almost immediately, but the Coventry ‘keeper made amends for his earlier error, by smartly blocking his goalbound shot. The visitors were struggling to clear their heads and Smith rose highest to meet a cross from the left-flank but his downward header floated narrowly wide of the target – with Marosi in no position to intervene. Just before the half-hour mark, Coventry threatened the home goal, for almost the first

time, when O’Hare took advantage of a short corner to fire a deflected effort which skimmed off the head of Michael Ihiekwe, to turn the ball away from goal before Wood put his body on the line to deny Walsh, moments later, following good work by Gervene Kastaneer, in the build-up. Minutes later, Mattock became the first to see yellow for a late lunge on Kastaneer, who reacted angrily to the challenge, before Rotherham almost added a third when Wiles robbed Jordan Shipley of possession to advance menacingly towards the visitors box before giving Smith the chance to play a tantalising ball which flew past the attentions of the home grown youngster, but fell invitingly for the on-rushing Hastie, whose first-time effort smashed into the side netting. In the last noteworthy action of the half, Olosunde was cautioned for a foul on Callum O’Hare before Rotherham weathered a late Coventry rally to maintain their twogoal advantage going into the interval. The Millers were quick out of the blocks, at the start of the second 45, and Hastie got Wood’s clipped ball under his spell to drive hard at McFadzean,

Wragg League (Over 35s / Over 45s) with A. Royston

PREMIER DIVISION Newly promoted Sheffield Academicals made it three wins out of three and they sit top of the division, their latest win was a close affair with Plough Rangers winning by 2-1. Handsworth Fc playing their first game of the season were 4-1 winners against Caribbean Sports, with doubles from Cartledge and Riley, In the only other game HSBC Bank travelled to play Elsecar Dynamoes and grabbed the points with a 2-1 win. DIVISION 1 West End Terriers picked up their first points of the season when they beat third place Doncaster Over 35s by 3-2,. Swinton Athletic and Bullcroft S&P Vets had a real ding dong of a match with goals galore but it was Swinton who came out on top by 5-4. Scawthorpe Club lost 3-2 at home to Royston Oakwood who seem to have found a bit of form after they were relegated last season. DIVISION 2 AFC Dronfield travelled to play Oughtibridge War Memorial and came away with the points with a 4-2 win.

before firing a low left-footed effort which shaved the far post. Moments later, Mattock and Wiles combined to great effect to pave the way for Lindsay, to take aim from distance but Marosi dived smartly to his left to smother his well-struck effort. Coventry almost grabbed a foothold in the clash when Dabo injected pace into a home move and Matt Godden was the grateful recipient of a smart one-two on the edge of the box to fire a rasping effort which brought a fine, reflex save from Daniel Iversen, in the home goal. Then Dabo dragged a low shot harmlessly wide of goal before Smith headed wide from Mattock’s curling centre. Coventry made a double substitution, in an effort to get back in the game, but Rotherham put the game to bed, almost immediately, when McFadzean was caught napping by the ever-alert Crooks, who stripped him of possession, before hauling down the former Northampton midfielder in the box and the referee awarded his second spot kick of the afternoon before brandishing a red card to the Sky Blues’ captain. From the resultant penalty, Smith made the visitors pay for a

second time – when he struck a wellstruck effort which beat the outstretched hand of Marosi to find the bottom corner of the net. . However, Rotherham were gifted another goal, with fifteen minutes remaining, when another piece of kamikaze defending from the visitors saw Dominic Hyam’s poor back pass leave Marosi in no man’s land and Crooks couldn’t believe his luck, as he toe-poked the ball past the hapless visiting ‘keeper and the ball dribbled into the unguarded net. In the latter stages of the game, Smith was given a standing ovation by the home faithful as he was replaced by Freddie Ladapo before Coventry’s miserable afternoon was summed up when Amadou Bakayoko blazed into the home faithful with the goal at his mercy before O’Hare dragged a shot well wide, from a promising position. Deep in stoppage time, O’Hare was yellow carded for hauling down Crooks in full flow as Ladapo headed over from Wiles’ free-kick before forcing Marosi into a sprawling save following a fierce effort, in the last act of a rousing Millers performance.

owls do enough to land three points Massimo Luongo’s maiden goal for the Owls was enough to beat Wigan at Hillsborough on Saturday. The Australian ace struck in the second half to give Wednesday a deserved three points having dominated the game. Barry Bannan hit the woodwork before Luongo’s decisive strike but when the breakthrough came

it was fully merited to ensure a return to winning ways for Garry Monk’s men. Wigan’s vulnerability on the road was evidenced as early as the second minute when Luongo shot narrowly wide and Steven Fletcher followed suit moments later. The Latics soaked up the pressure and went close themselves on the quarter of an

hour mark as Keiren Westwood denied Gavin Massey before Julian Borner hooked the rebound off the line from the same player. But Wigan were soon back under the cosh and only a brave and welltimed block from Antonee Robinson stopped a Fletcher volley arrowing in. The Owls turned the screw even further as half time

approached and were a whisker away from taking the lead on 39 minutes but Bannan’s curling effort from distance struck the frame of the goal. The second half saw a similar theme as Wednesday bossed possession and they were rewarded on 56 minutes. Kadeem Harris’ cross caused problems in the Wigan defence and the ball landed at

the feet of Reach, who teed up Luongo to slam past David Marshall. The Owls had their tails up and Bannan beat Marshall from range but also the far post. While the lead was slender, though, the Latics had the capability to break and this they did on 70 minutes, with a rare sortie upfield leading to Keiffer Moore forcing a fabulous save

merry monk reflects on game

As the Owls head into the second international break on the cusp of the play-offs, boss Garry Monk was in a satisfied mood following the 1-0 win over Wigan. Although the manager highlighted areas for improvement, he stressed the players are on the right track individually and as a team. He said: “I’ve only been with the group a short period of time and I’ve been delighted with them. There’s things that we can do better, of course there is, this is the Championship, but today we fully

deserved the three points. We spoke to the players at half time about picking up the tempo and there’s a big difference between pace and tempo. There is pace in the team but in that second half we moved the ball quicker and we got the reward. Massimo took his goal really well and I was pleased with him and Joey in the middle, I thought they played really well. The key thing is we are moving in the right direction and picking up points at the same time.” The Owls go into the break in good shape

and Monk insists the hard work will follow recovery ahead of the trip to Cardiff on Friday week. He added: “The first part will be about the recovery because you don’t get a lot of time generally to do that. Then we will be back out there working, and working hard. There are areas we can improve defensively and offensively. It’s about putting the building blocks in place piece by piece. We are not the finished article and today we have won a difficult game. Wigan are a good side, they were never going to come here

and make it easy for us but we got the job done and got the win.” Meanwhile Massimo Luongo made his first start for Wednesday in the Championship on Saturday and marked the occasion with a goal as the Owls overcame Wigan. The Australian international has had to bide his time since joining the club on transfer deadline day. But the former QPR man took his opportunity at the weekend and slammed home the winning goal against the Latics after the break. He said: “It

gives the manager a headache now for the next game and that’s all you can do. I knew coming into the team, especially signing on deadline day, that I would have to be patient. It’s a new team, new players and you look at how Barry and Fletch combine, they have been playing together for years. That will come, I just need to be around it more and the only way to do that is to keep performing well and hopefully keep winning. I want to play as much as I can but if I’m not playing, I need to push the guys who

from Westwood, who tipped the substitute’s header onto the crossbar. Fletcher had the ball in the net at the other end but a linesman’s flag cut the celebrations short and there was to be no further boost for the Latics as Wednesday enter the international break on a high.

are as much as I can.” On his maiden goal for the club, Luongo added: “It felt good, especially for it to be the winning goal, and I was just pleased to get on the scoresheet. It’s always something I’ve wanted to improve, to get my goalscoring record up and just be a threat more. It was one of those games, difficult to get into in the first half but in the second, we came out flying, pressing well and the ball fell to me. I think that was a reward for the work we were doing, more assertive in the final third and everybody doing their jobs well and the result was a goal.”

blades unbeaten on the road An entertaining clash at Vicarage Road ended all square, between the Blades and the Hornets. Both teams had chances to win all three points, with Dean Henderson twice coming to the Blades rescue in the second-half. For the clash in Hertfordshire, boss Wilder named the same starting XI that pushed leaders Liverpool close last time out. Amongst the substitutes, Sharp returned following a three-match ban and replaced Clarke. It was a quiet opening few minutes, with both sides looking to get a grip of the game, although it was the Blades pushing forward the most often, with Baldock forcing a corner, that Egan almost made something of at the back. But in the 10th minute, United had a huge let off, as Gray somehow put the ball over the ball with an empty net in front of him, after Pereyra had made the most of some indecision down the Blades left. That chance lifted the home crowd and Pereyra forced a corner, after Welbeck had ran purposefully through midfield, but

Prödl headed harmlessly over at the back post. Back on the attack, Norwood’s switch of play found Baldock in acres of space and his deep cross forced Janmaat to take action and concede a cornrer. That was partially cleared, before Basham’s deflected cross nearly resulted in Cathcart turning the ball into his own net. A flurry of attacks ended with Fleck forcing Foster into a save. The Blades were now on top, although Watford posed a threat on the break and Baldock forced another couple of corners in quick succession, but despite good delivery they unfortunately came to nothing. United continued to press for the opener, but McBurnie couldn’t connect at the near post after another marauding run forward from Basham. As half-time approached it was again the Blades going forward, but from Basham’s header down from Stevens cross, Robinson couldn’t make a clean connection and it remained goalless at the break. On 49 minutes, United had Henderson to thank

for keeping the scores level. Gray flicked on before Welbeck got the better of Egan and advanced clean through from the halfway line, but the Blades stood big and denied the former Arsenal man at the expense of a corner. At the other end, Lundstram got the better of Prödl, McBurnie headed down and Robinson’s strike almost got the better of Foster. McBurnie was the first player to be booked following a foul and a disagreement with Kabasele. Just after the hour, McBurnie was replaced by Mousset, who received a warm hand from the visiting supporters. Wilder made his second change with 19 minutes, as Sharp took the place of Robinson. With the clocking ticking down, Fleck had a shot blocked, which resulted in a break for the home side, but Deulofeu’s cross was comfortably collected by Henderson. Watford surrendered possession in their own half, before Sharp’s cross almost caught Foster out, only for the ball to land wide of the back post. Five minutes of added

seven international call-ups for sheffield united ladies Seven Sheffield United Ireland training camp aside Cyprus 8-0 in Women players have been called up for international duty over the coming week. Aimee Palmer, Ellie Fletcher, Naomi Hartley, Keri Matthews and Izzy Ford are all with various England youth teams while Veatriki Sarri and Becky Flaherty have been called up for Greece and Northern Ireland respectively as both sides look to qualify for Euro 2021. Sarri faces her first qualifier of the year against Germany, meaning the Blades winger will be coming up against the likes of Lyon’s Dzsenifer Marozsan and Wolfsburg’s Alexandra Popp when the sides meet on Tuesday. Flaherty has been called up to a Northern

after being drafted into the squad last month for qualifiers against Norway and Wales. A late draw in Newport saw Flaherty’s side walk away with a hard-fought point and the training camp will provide good preparation for their next set of qualifiers next month in the reverse matches against the same opponents. On-loan duo Palmer and Fletcher are once again with the England Under 21 side for a training camp this week while defender Hartley is in the midst of a three-game qualifying group as the young Under 19 Lionesses look to qualify for next summer’s European Championships. Hartley was an unused sub as England swept

their opening game, and the team face the hosts on Saturday before wrapping up proceedings against Serbia on Tuesday afternoon. Matthews and Ford, the latter currently on loan at FA WNL side Derby County, are currently part of an Under 18s training camp at St. George’s Park. Both have proven to be exciting young players in the Blades first team with Ford getting game time last season before going on loan, while 16-year-old Matthews has been a regular in the team so far this season after joining from York City’s Regional Talent Centre.

time were signaled and Lundstram was booked, having clipped the heels of Deulofeu to halt a potential break and it was Henderson who preserved the point at the death, denying Dawson, from Deulofeu, as the game ended all square.
